He wants his voters to do it. He wants his voters to vote by mail. Really, thats all you need to know. Follow the actions. The fbi director in sworn testimony says, follow the history and the precedent. Now, we have not seen, historically, any kind of coordinated National Voter fraud effort in a major election. Whether its by mail or otherwise. So the president says he wants his voters to do it. The fbi director says its safe. Follow the actions. Because the words the president is saying out loud elsewhere, the intentional he is sowing is meant for something else. And while the president and his campaign is pushing their voters to use mailin ballots, he doesnt want anyone else to. In other words, he doesnt want democrats to use the system he wants his voters to. So why does he have such little confidence in his ability to win if every vote is counted . Meanwhile, more than 900 new deaths reported from coronavirus overnight. New guidance from the cdc forecasts that more than 20,000 additional people will die in just the next three weeks. More than 44,000 new cases reported in the dlalast day. That is more than quadruple the number that dr. Fauci thinks is safe. And energthis morning, nearly h the country is seeing spikes. You can look at your map right there, nearly all of the red and orange. Lets bring in abby phillip and david gregory. Both to s great to see both youve. Isnt that interesting that President Trump is so passionate about his voters using mailin bl ballots that hes urging them to. Yet, out loud in public, he constantly tries to sow doubt about them. Yeah, when he talks about the ballots that he wants to throw out, obviously, hes not talk about the ballots from his own supporters. Hes talking about ballots that are being cast by democrats. And he, in a lot of ways, has created this situation that were in, in which there is this massive partisan divide. Republicans, according to polls, dont trust voting by mail and are more likely to vote in person. And democrats are more likely to vote by mail. And so President Trump and the rnc and the Trump Campaign, in court, they are surgically trying to ensure that some of these expansions that are being made for covid dont get put into place. They are pushing back on efforts to count votes early, pushing back on efforts to allow voters opportunities to fix problems with their mailin ballots. And all of this is knowing that the proportion of those ballots that are likely to be for the democrats is going to be pretty high. So i do think that this is a coordinated campaign. Its not just coincidence that they are sort of talking out of two sides of their mouth here. Thats why i suggest Pay Attention to what theyre actually doing, which is trying to get their people to the mailbox to mail in their votes at the same time they are actively trying to prevent others to do it. And, you know, david, the fbi director says its safe. The fbi director says there is no evidence of widespread fraud. The Senate Passes a resolution, saying they support a peaceful transfer of power. And thats important, but youre also hearing from senate allies, including Lindsey Graham, that it may all come down to the Supreme Court. Its interesting, Lindsey Graham in this role that hes played with President Trump and if you read Bob Woodwards book, you also learn about some tough advice that he gives the president , that the president usually follows. So, graham is saying therell be a peaceful transfer, hell support that, is important. You hear more republicans speaking up about this, but that could also change. If theres a case that the president and his team want to make, that there ought to be lawsuits, that they ought to seek recounts in certain states, that they ought to sue and use other executive power, we cant predict how the politics will line up, because weve seen the president s allies fall in line behind him on some pretty important matters. But, we can sort of predict that the president will be litigious, and as Barton Gellman said in this atlantic article thats gotten so much attention, abby, President Trump will never concede. Hes not built that way. He doesnt concede defeat, never. He won in 2016 and he didnt concede he lost the popular vote, he never has. So when Mitch Mcconnell says this, lets play Mitch Mcconnell and lets part what that might really mean. Weve had an orderly transfer of power every four years since washington was selected for a second term in 1792. That will happen again to the winner of the november 3rd election on january the 20th, 2021. Therein lies the rub. That will happen for the winner of the election. President trump will claim hes the winner, regardless of if he wins. Yeah, i think that there is a lot of wiggle room that republicans are creating for themselves and how theyre talking about this. You know, one of the big things that we know, to your point, al as you know, about the president s litigiousness, we know that the Republican National committee, the president s campaign, plans pretty extensive litigation after the election. And that litigation is going to be targeted at any ballots that are received after november 3rd. In many states, it is lawful for those ballots to be counted after november 3rd, but theyve already told us theyre going to challenge that. And so after the election, we need to be looking very close at what Lindsey Graham and minnesota mMitch Mcconnell say about whether those ballots can be counted. Thats the case theyll make, that anything comes in after november 3rd, whether its law in that state or not, shouldnt be counted. And perhaps if hes up on election day count because of inperson voting, hes the winner of the election. Thats whats so deeply troubling to the people i talk to. When you hear republicans saying that, especially given their willingness to turn on a dime, changing their words six months later or four years later, you really have to pay close attention to whether they will be the ones to say to President Trump, no, mr. President , you have to accept these results. These results are final. A lot of people also say, at the same time, that if there is a Supreme Court decision, if there is a Supreme Court decision, it will be hard to see how trump pushes back on that. But again, i really wouldnt assume anything. You brought up Mitch Mcconnells statements here. I dont think the key words there were winner. The key words there were november 3rd. Theres no reason that Mitch Mcconnell had to say november 3rd. He did it perhaps intentionally to suggest that there is Something Different about the votes cast inperson on election day versus those ballots that may quite legally arrive in those states after. I think those words were chosen deliberately. Overall, i think the doubt that is being sowed isnt doubt about something that might happen in the end. The doubt and the reason the president is saying things out loud and doing Something Differently, the doubt is the end. The doubt is the end in itself. And that you cant trust it because the president s view is that the fix is in. That the same people who brought you impeachment are going to try to rig the election and will never really get a fair shake. Haas the doubt that someone whos behind in the polls in states that he won, at least facing tight races or behind in some of these places is trying to create for his supporters. And i think, you know, our analog here is to think back to the 2000 campaign and election that went on for over a month because of the recount in florida and wlumas ultimately handed to george w. Bush in a Supreme Court decision. And this is so complex because of how many states could be involved, how many additional lawsuits could be involved and other levers of executive power. And all the while, a president who is saying before the election, you cant trust this if it doesnt go our way, because democrats are coming at us. But i choose to believe, theres a lot we dont know. We dont know how its ultimately going to shake out, how close it ultimately might be. Democrats are ready too. And biden was told not to concede because of the likelihood that, a, were not going to know, just by virtue of counting in states and that litigation will start. I think we can expect its going to be a pretty turbulent period on election day going forward. Were doing our calisthenics nows to prepare for that day and whatever happens. Abby, as you know, the president promised his Health Care Plan back in july. He said it would be ready in two weeks, didnt happen. Promised in august, didnt happen. So weve been hammering that, and maybe because of pressure, he did release what hes calling his plan, but its really a wish list. Its sort of pie in the sky stu stuff. So here it is. His, i guess, dream of what he all the things that he would want in some sort of Health Care Plan. Of course, he would have to work with congress to achieve this. And as we know, you know, President Trump is not necessarily a details guy. And the devil is always in the details. So what are we to make of this health care wish list . I think wish list is the best way to describe it. These are things that you hear in the rhetoric all the time, but the reality of the Health Care Situation in this country, which is incredibly complex, and its a behemoth. And that is why the Affordable Care act was such a heavy lift for the obama administration, that these things need to be dealt with by congress and in a comprehensive fashion. Not even the president can wave a magic wand and make all of these things happen. And i think theyre trying to indicate to voters that theyre doing something about it. And sure, they should get credit for having, on some level, principles about what they want to do. But that is not the same thing as a Health Care Plan. And it really cannot be confused more that. And its also misleading to make people believe that these things can be accomplished by the president just saying it. There is, especially if these cases go forward to invalidate the Supreme Court, as the president wants the cases to go forward, theres going to need to be something to replace it and thats going to have to be done by congress. The administration is arguing to overturn obamacare in the courts. The case is scheduled to be heard on november 10th. The administration is trying to do away with protections for preexisting conditions. And also, the community rating, which i think i covered nearly as much, which guarantees Affordable Health care for people with preexisting conditions. I didnt see anything in that in the list of words that the white house put out yesterday. David, you had your hand up there or you were adjusting your light, i couldnt tell which one . Well, both work. But, you know, i think whats interesting about this, about any kind of vision, which is pretty vague is a commitment. Youve always heard the president say, well, weve got to protect preexisting conditions. I think its a recognition of how much political danger there is in taking away a benefit that has been bestowed upon the american people. You dont do that lightly. And thats why it hasnt republicans have not prevailed. And the president , especially in the context of the election, where hes getting hammered on this, wants to be able to say to people, even if we do Something Different, weve still got to deliver on preexisting conditions. Its not clear, but maybe just working out your pitch arm. Thank you very much for being with us. Appreciate it. Overnight, the attorney for the family of Breonna Taylor accused kentuckys attorney general of a coverup in the investigation into her killing. We saw protests overnight in louisville, mostly peaceful and across the country, because a grand jury failed to charge the Police Officers in taylors death. Cnns Brynn Gingras live for us in louisville. Brynn . Good morning. And we actually got an update from the Louisville Metro Police department, saying there are about a couple of dozen arrests made overnight. Certainly, much more peaceful night than the one we saw the night before, where those two officers were shot and there were more than a hundred arrests. We know one of those officers is doing much better, torhe other well, but is still in the hospital recovering, and the suspect charged with the shooting during those protests is expected to go before a judge later today. The curfew here in louisville, its always been 9 00. There were protesters out past that time last night, but that curfew is going to be extended throughout the rest of this weekend. Now, where do we go from here . Well, you just mentioned, the attorney for Breonna Taylors family, benjamin crump, went on our air last night and did say that he accuses the attorney general of a coverup. He asks the questions, what sort of evidence did this grand jury see . Was Breonna Taylors name even mentioned during those secret proceedings in order to come back with this single indictment guinne against the officer . So the mayor of this town now asking the attorney general, trying to work with him and the fbi to release more information. Some evidence giving everyone a little bit more clear picture of exactly what charges that grand jury was considering. So today, though, were going to hear from Breonna Taylors family directly. This is the first time theyll be speaking publicly since this indictment was handed down and we know its been theyve been emotional, hearing about this. And were certainly going to probably hear very emotional words coming from this News Conference scheduled for latter today. Alisyn . Brynn, keep us posted on all the developments, thank you. I want to read something to you now. Quote, the truth is that after decades of looking for illegal voting, theres no proof of widespread fraud. The president s rhetoric has put my party in the position of a firefighter who deliberately sets fires to look like a hero putting them out. Republicans need to take a hard look before advocating laws that actually do limit the franchise of otherwise qualified voters. Calling elections fraudulent and results rigged with almost nonexistent evidence is antithetical to being the rule of law party. Those words written by longtime republican election lawyer ben ginsburg, who is with me now. Also with us, ari berman, Senior Reporter for mother jones and the author of, give us the ballot, the modern struggle for Voting Rights in america. And i wanted you on here so we could take a step back from some of the language, some of the words being spoke out loud to talk about whats actually happening on the ground. And ben, i wanted to read your oped. Youre not just a republican election lawyer, you were the preeminent republican election lawyer from every campaign i covered for 20 years, you were the guy. So why did you find why did you choose to write that oped in the washington post. Why is it so important to you to make that larger point . Never before in our history have we had a president who have challenged elections before theyve even taken place for being rigged and fraudulent. And that has a real impact on the way the country runs, obviously, the part of elections. So i thought it was important to say that, to be able to put the contexts that are going to come out in some sort of perspective. You also wanted to point out, though, what was actually being done might limit the franchise. What did you mean by that . What that means is that in many of the court cases that are taking place around the country today, the republican position is based on the fact that there was fraud that took place or a need to prevent fraud. A need to prevent fraud is absolutely valid for state legislators to put in their laws. But if you have a pattern of cases in which youre deliberate trying to stop certain groups that oppose you, youre putting up barriers to their voting, then thats more problematic. That all gets heightened when the president of the United States says that the elections are going to be fraudulent or rigged. To say that, you have to have evidence. And the simple fact is, the evidence hasnt appeared, its not it doesnt exist. Republicans have looked every election cycle, as they should, for voting improprieties to make sure that valid votes are counted. But you have to be candid about what youve developed as evidence, if youre going to make charges like that. This is a perfect segue to you, ari berman, no relation, by the way. You live and breathe voter rights and voter access and ballot access. And despite the president s words, whats happening on the ground legally . What are the fights either to make access to votingi ineasier harder around the country . Hey, john, good to see another berman this morning. Youre absolutely right. There are real challenges to our elections right now and the challenges arent what the president s talking about. The great fear out there is not voter fraud. The great fear out there is the potential for voter disenfranchisement. Things like in pennsylvania, having to have two envelopes to put your ballot in, and potentiallily ten y lily ltens f ballots being thrown out because of things like naked envelopes. Things like witness signatures in North Carolina and wisconsin. You need to have a witness find your ballot at a time of social distancing. Trying to throw out ballots if they arrive after election, even if they are allowed to arrive after election day, as long as theyre postmarked by election day. These are all the kind of things were concerned about. Will people be able to request mail ballots . Will people get their ballots back in time . Will their ballots be thrown out for minor technicalities . Will there be enough polling places . Will there be enough poll workers . Will there be long lines at the polls . Those are the kind of things that Election Officials are concerned about, that people who cover Voting Rights are concerned about. So obviously, President Trumps comments about not committing to a peaceful transfer of power are extremely disturbing, but i am concerned about all of the things that are happening before the election to make it more difficult to vote. And how the Trump Campaign is undermining free and Fair Elections in realtime, not what theyll do afterfterward. Thats my point. Give us one example of an actual case. Something that is happening right now that impacts whether or how people vote. You choose, there are fights over dropoff boxes. Pennsylvania is a great example. There was a pennsylvania Supreme Court decision recently that did some very good things and also some bad things. The good things it did was it said if your ballot is postmarked by election day, it can arrive afterwards, it said, you could drop your ballot off, things like that. The Trump Campaign is appealing that ruling. So theres now going to be another ruling and they could decide that your ballot has to arrive by election day and theyre going to throw out ballots that arrive after. Or they could prevent the use of drop boxes. At the same time, that same court order in pennsylvania said that you could throw out, quote, naked ballots. You would have to have two envelopes in your absentee ballots, which is very confusing to people. In philadelphia, they warned di hundreds of thousands of people. We could have tens of thousands of ballots thrown out in pennsylvania from one law alone. Ben ginsburg, i dont know if youre a Charlie Baker guy, the republican governor of massachusetts, but hes the kind of candidate i know that you probably would have supported over time. And i know there are people involved in his office and his campaigns that youve been associated with in the past. I want to play to you how governor baker, republican of massachuset massachusetts, has addressed what the president has been saying out loud. Listen. Mailin balloting has been with us forever. And that peaceful transfer of power is what the people of this country rely on when they go to vote. It is appalling and outrageous that anyone would suggest for a minute that if they lose an election, theyre not going to leave. Period. So, ben, governor baker was pissed off, frankly. And if you watch more of what he said, hes angry along the margins, too. Why arent other republicans, Republican Leaders in washington, they put out tweets and have said certain things, but why arent we hearing that level of anger . Whats the complicating factor . I think the complicating factor, just to look at it from their perspective, is that theyre caught in this terrible place between the president , who they dont agree with on things like transfer of power, as you heard yesterday, but they also have practical implications. It is a big deal if you are a conservative to have another justice on the Supreme Court. So theyre making their bed and theyre holding their nose at the same time in the practical implications. It isnt you know, most of the senators, especially those up for reelection, are relying on mailin ballots. They have to have mailin ballots come in by their supporters. Theyre going to lose their elections. So they have to disagree with the president and his rhetoric on that. So basically, the president s teeing up a whole bunch of issues that have the potential to cause longterm damage to the republican party. And the silence now is going to complicate that, but its also understandable on a different level. Ben ginsburg, great to see you again. I appreciate you being with us. Cousin ari, i appreciate you coming on. I hope we see you again very soon. Thank you. All right, were going to turn now to coronavirus and really troubling new projections. The cdc now forecasts that 20,000 more people will die from coronavirus in just the next three weeks. This morning, nearly half the country is seeing a rise in coronavirus cases. If you look at your screen, you see almost all of the west and the midwest there in orange and red. Joining us now is dr. Sanjay gupta, cnn chief medical correspondent. So sanjay, i know you dont like to start the morning with these kinds of dire predictions, but it gets even worse. I mean, the one that has gotten my attention this morning is the ihme model that shows that okay. It took us eight months to get to the jawdropping death toll of 200,000 people. What they project is that in just the next theres months, by the end of the year, were almost going to double that. The number theyre using now is 371,000 people. Now, they also say that if we were at 95 mask wearing in the country, we could bring death toll down by 100,000 people. But were only at 48 of the country wearing masks. So there you have the projection, you have the problem, and you have the potential plan. Things that weve been talking about now for seven, eight months, alisyn. You know, so its a real issue, you know, this idea that there are some basic Public Health measures that can make such a big difference, but were still not doing it. And i think many of these models now, we follow that one and we follow other models, are really starting to create these models based on the fact that they dont believe that americans are going to start doing the mask wearing and abiding by some of these putragic. If you look at that model more carefully, and ive spent some time talking to chris murray about this. What you see is that theres a gradual, right now, increase in the number of cases that people are gheskt egetting infected ev but then you start to get some significant spikes going into october. And by december, again, if you follow that model, theres some 3,000 people, they project, that die per day in the month of december. And thats how they get to that tragic number of doubling the number of deaths right now. Ill show you this, from 1918, just a reminder, and i only show it, because its the closest model to what we have going on there. You see that first wave, that was about 75,000 people died. The population of the country is about a third of what it is now. And then they really brought the numbers down, much better than we have this time around, but then they got into september october, and you saw those significant spikes. And that really led to the problem that were seeing in 118 and thats what theyre trying to avoid now. Its pretty frightening when you look at this graph and look at whats happening today, where you do see the number of daily new cases rising, it is starting to rise again and it is troubling. Theres another story going on right now, which is very important and youve been focused on, which is the vaccine approval process. And the fda has been discussing these new guidelines for approving a vaccine, which might delay ultimately approval. It will require a twomonth gap between when people in the trials receive their last va vaccine and a vaccine can be approved. The president said he could overrule this. Qulou talked you talked to dr. Fauci, where dr. Fauci, between the president s opinion on this and the fdas opinion on this, he takes the fda. Listen. But what would you do if you really felt with regard to this critical issue of the vaccine, that for political reasons, they were not abiding by fda guidelines that made sense . If the fda career scientists come out and say, this is what we should do, these are respected, trained people who are much better at models and statistics and all of that other stuff than any of us are. If they look at it and say, we really feel strongly we should go this way, i would back the scientists. I would have to do that, as a scientist. And i would express that. This qualifies as one of those subtle but strong statements from dr. Fauci there. Yeah, hes always careful in terms of how he presents these things. That was after a few times of sort of asking this question with him. Its very clear how he feels about this. And frankly, how a lot of Public Health officials feel. The fda has set this benchmark, which, by the way, is still a very, very aggressive benchmark, in terms of speed. But what theyre basically saying is, we want to wait at least two months, to make sure that the vaccine is safe. We saw what happened with, you know, the trial participant in england. We want to make sure were not seeing rare side effects that become really amplified as you give this vaccine to more and more people. It makes a lot of sense. And two months is a very aggressive timeline. What you heard, what youre talking about is the fact that the president said those guidelines that the fda is putting forward, they may not approve, which means that they may not necessarily wait that twomonth time frame. Interesting. Also interesting, that incredible sweeping staircase behind sanjay during that interview. What a backdrop thats jasanjays pad. Keep it interesting for you. Thank you, sanjay. Just a few hours from now, oregons governor, kate brown, will speak about efforts to keep the peace during dueling protests that are planned for tomorrow in portland. The citys been the especially of demonstrations for months and President Trump has claimed the city is, quote, ablaze all the time. But the reality is much different. Cnns elle reeve spent time on the ground. Do not enter this area. When they start moving, we start moving, as well. We have a problem in our Police Department that is systemic. This is one week in portland, oregon, where antipolice protests have been going on for more than a hundred days and tensions between protesters and police have only escalated. As we got there, a member of the rightwing group, patriot prayer, named Aaron Jay Danielson was killed by an antifascist protester. Everyone we spoke to said they feared violence would escalate. The reason that were out here is because petitions dont work. Voting for the lesser of two evils just leaves us worse off, every time. We come out, we fight. Were not doing this because we hate america. We all have one goal in mind and that is ending police brutality. People are dying and if Water Bottles being thrown at the police stops that, ill do it every day. Reporter how long have you been coming to the protests . The whole time. Since may 29th for me. Our role is basically front line medic support. No matter where it comes from, it could be tripping in the street, it could be getting pushed into a building, it could be gunshots. We cover it all. Ive had to deescalate about three outside agitators who have come in with guns. They were always far and few between. It was like some guy who was like, antifas terrorists. Its like, were not terrorists, man, its just a protest. Reporter do a lot of people have weapons . We dont have weapons. We dont have weapons. The most weaponized we get is like shields. Reporter but youre saying the people are like, well, i like the peaceful protests, but when they burn stuff or break windows, thats thats different from blm . I say, property doesnt bleed, but i do. If ending systemic oppression means a store gets burnt or looted and nobody is hurt, how is that any worse than living in a situation where i have to fear for my life every day . We are on top of the donut shop, which is ironically located across from the Portland Police union. Often, the protest will continue for a couple of hours and then all of a sudden, there will be a huge rush of riot cops. Back in may, when the protests started, did you have a gas mask or no of course i didnt have a gas mask i had face masks for covid, but none of us have had gas masks. I think weve raised about 30,000 this week to buy bulletproof vests, because it turns out that we might need them. And thats really terrifying. So ive got a body cam to record things that need evidence in court. I currently have a head injury. Like, im still recovering from a tbi. It was back when we were still under the federal occupation. That was july, right . Yeah, they shot me directly in the head with a tear gas canister and i got post concussion syndrome like 22 hours later. Something ive kind of noticed in a few protests that weve attended, theres a moment of party feeling, you stand in front of the police, but then theres a moment where it gets quiet and theres a tension, it seems to almost like inviting the confrontation. Like the protest cant end without that clash . Yes, a big part of whats happening here is that it has to be uncomfortable. Well, before we came out of the park, they were there and decided to permit it was an unpermitted march. People were not happy, someone threw some incendiary devices and all hell broke loose. And there was fare gas flying in, fireworks. It was really rough. And theyre make ing a push. How do you see it ending . Im not sure. We havent seen much of any change, but the people out here are activists, and maybe they didnt start as activists. And that carries on for the rest of your life. Reporter President Trump has warned antifa will ruin the suburbs. Does anybody want to have somebody from antifa as a resident of your suburb . I dont think so. [ bleep ] you, antifa. This is already one of the most closely watched races in the country. But now shes about to face the very same issue that may be hurting her with some voters. The decision on a Trump Nominee for the Supreme Court. Gary tuchman got to go to maine and joins us live from bangor. Great to see you, gary. Reporter john, nice to see you, too. Susan collins has been a u. S. Collins since bill clinton was president , a long time. Shes hoping to win a fifth term. But she is in the fight of her political life. Susan collins has been a u. S. Senator for almost a quarter century. The republican senior senator bills herself as the most bipartisan member. A reputation thats helped her win reelection in a state where there are more democrats and even more independents than there are republicans. There is no one who has worked harder for the people of maine all the people of maine and delivered more to them than i have. Reporter but one thing she helped deliver is proving politically troublesome for her. Susan collins helped deliver a Supreme Court seat to Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. I will vote to confirm judge kavanaugh. Reporter she voted to confirm despite Sexual Assault allegations against kavanaugh from his high school days. Her democratic opponent is the speaker of the maine house of representatives. At this campaign event, listen to what this man tells gideon. I never would vote for susan after she voted for kavanaugh. Reporter in the streets of maines largest city portland, and in the scenic small towns, kavanaughs name comes up a lot. Ever since the Brett Kavanaugh issue or the Brett Kavanaugh vote, i felt like shes not listening to what the people of maine want anymore. How did you feel when Susan Collins voted for kavanaugh to be on the Supreme Court . Like shes not listening to what people want. Im a democrat but i have always voted for Susan Collins until this year. She has just shes just capitulated. Reporter collins has been a reelection juggernaut. The last one she won by 37 percentage points. The most recent New York Times Siena College poll shows gideon with 49 and collins with 44 . Its within the polls margin of errors. Collins is polling better than President Trump is in the state. For some voters, the trump factor is too much. Shes just in trumps pocket. Shes scared of him as so many people are. We used to vote for collins, but i think shes too much of a trumpee at the moment. Who are you voting for in the Senate Election . Susan collins, definitely. Reporter among those who support her this man says senator collins should take more of a conservative stance on issues and vote the conservative position, especially with the upcoming vote on our new incoming Supreme Court justice. Reporter indeed, senator collins announced shed vote against the trump Supreme Court nominee if the vote takes place before the election day. Does gideon give her credit . I cannot say that collins has stood up for what is right. Reporter during a debate earlier this month i have always put the people of maine first and i always will. Reporter completely different opinions that the people of maine have to consider. Now, yesterday, President Trump happened to talk about maine. He said, quote, im doing very well in maine. You have seen the numbers. Well, we have seen the numbers and its kind of the opposite. Its looking dim for him. And joe biden is in front of the polls. Susan collins is doing much better in this state than President Trump is. Right now were in the town of bangor, Susan Collins will be campaigning later this morning. A smaller town north of here. John . Gary tuchman, thank you. Giving us an update on one of the most closely watched races in the country to be sure. New day continues right now. The president is telling the country he will not accept the results of the election if he loses. He will throw out some number of ballots. We want to make sure that the election had been honest. Im not sure it will. There will be a peaceful transition, no matter what anybody says. The virus is raging in these places. And its not going to go down unless we do things differently. I want to assure you that politics will play no role whatsoever in the approval of a vaccine. The four companies revealed the strategies for testing a vaccine. Its not a test. Its basically a rubber stamp. This is new day with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Good morning. This is new day. Its friday, john. Were getting a little bit punchy. This morning, Election Officials, the head of the Postal Service and the head of the fbi all feel the need to reassure the americans about the integrity of the Voting System after alarming claims by President Trump. Now, we have not seen historically any kind of coordinated National Voter fraud effort in a major election. Whether its by mail or otherwise. The United States senate even found it necessary after the president s comments to hold a vote to uphold a peaceful transfer of power. But President Trump is still trying to sow doubt about the election with baseless claims about mailin voting. But interesting, at the same time, hes encouraging his supporters to do just that. To vote by mail. Yeah, i think its more than interesting. Let it sink in for a moment. They have so much faith in mailin voting theyre pushing their voters to do it now. Isnt that the only thing that matters, what theyre actually telling people to do beyond the noise the president s making . And if you want to talk about numbers this morning, more than 900 new deaths reported from coronavirus overnight and new guidance from the cdc that now forecasts more than 20,000 additional people could die in just the next three weeks. More alarming
