We buckle down and do a better job. Announcer this is new day, with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world. This is new day. It is friday, september 18th, its 6 00 here in new york and this morning, two giant political stages, one mask. The one worn by former Vice President joe biden as he took the stage for a cnn town hall in pennsylvania. A metaphor for the evening and in fact, maybe the campaign. Biden says he puts his faith in science that he will trust Anthony Fauci on a vaccine, not President Trump. He made some news on a mask mandate. How far he says he can and would go. He also made news with a swipe at the ivy league. Whos going to stand up for those kids . President trump, for his part, is attacking the fbi director for his concerns over russian attacks on the u. S. Election and attacking government scientists about masks. This morning, there is new reporting in the Washington Post that the administration had a plan in april to send 650 Million Masks by mail to the american people. Five masks over address, but the post reports the plan was scrapped because there was concern in the administration it might cause a panic. Here are the numbers. Coronavirus cases spiking again in the u. S. 30 states are seeing cases increase this morning. More than 44,000 new cases reported yesterday. Almost 900 more americans were killed on thursday. The cdc now projects another 20,000 people could die within just the next three weeks from coronavirus, as the death toll nears the shocking milestone of 200,000 people. But lets begin with cnns arlette saenz. She is live in scranton, pennsylvania. Give us all the highlights, arlette. Reporter well, alisyn, joe biden argued the u. S. Is unsafe under President Trump. In a cnn town hall last night, less than two weeks before the two face off in their first debate, the town hall came just two nights after President Trump had his own town hall with abc news. And biden cast this campaign as one between scranton and park avenue and he slammed the president for downplaying the coronavirus, calling it close to criminal. Joe biden took aim at President Trumps response to the coronavirus, in his first town hall since becoming the democratic president ial nominee. The idea that youre going to not tell people what youve been told, that this virus is incredibly contagious, seven times more contagious than the flu, he knew it and he did nothing. Its close to criminal. Reporter biden told voters why its important to trust Health Experts on matters involving the pandemic, like vaccine development. I dont trust the president on vaccines. I trust dr. Fauci. If fauci says a vaccine is safe, i take the vaccine. We should listen to the scientists. Not to the president. Reporter the former vp was asked about attorney general bill barrs recent comment s comparing coronavirus sta stayathome orders to slavery. Biden put the blame on trump. You lost your freedom because you didnt act. The freedom to go to that ball game, the freedom for your kid to go to school, the freedom to see your mom and dad in the hospital. The freedom just to walk around your neighborhood because of failure to act. I never, ever, ever thought i would see such a thoroughly, totally irresponsible administration. Reporter as biden answered voters questions from a social distance at thursdays drivein style event, trump held yet another Campaign Rally in wisconsin, without social distancing, and very few supporters wearing masks. By the way, officially, this is called a protest, you know that . We no longer call it rallies. We dont call them rallies anymore, because, you know, youre not allowed to have a political rally for more than ten people. Youre not allowed to go to church. Youre not allowed to meet. Youre not allowed to talk to anybody. You have to stay in a prison. Reporter while spraeaking o stage near his childhood hometown of scranton, pennsylvania, biden looked to connect with working class voters, saying theres a clear contrast between himself and trump. I really do view this campaign as a campaign between scranton and park avenue. Reporter the democratic nominee telling voters he wants to serve as a bridge to unite an extremely divided nation. Im running as a democrat, but im going to be everyones president. Im not going to be a democratic president. Im going to be americas president. Reporter biden also becoming emotional when speaking about his son, beau, slamming reports of trump calling Service Members losers, something the president denies. I dont want to get too per my son died of cancer. He came home from iraq and i have to tell you, it really, really offended me when he volunteered to go there for a year and he came home because of stage iv glee blioblaglioblasto president referred to people like my son as losers. Losers . talk about losers now, as for that debate, joe biden said hes looking forward to debating President Trump very soon. And today we will see dueling events in minnesota. Joe biden will tour a Union Training center in duluth and deliver remarks. And President Trump will also be in the state holding a rally. The campaign on full display today with 46 days to go. John . Arlette saenz in scranton, pennsylvania. Arlette, keep us posted. Meanwhile, a new former Trump Administration official has come forward to say she is voting for joe biden. Olivia troy was Vice President mike pences top aide on the Coronavirus Task force. Shes blasting the administrations Pandemic Response in a searing new video. Cnns Boris Sanchez live at the white house with the lautest on this. Boris, i think it needs to be said, i dont think there is any precedent for the sheer number of people who have left an administration and then said they are going to vote against the leader of that administration. Reporter yeah, thats right, john. And the president just dismisses them as disgruntled former employees. More on that in a second. As you noted, olivia troy was Vice President pences former Homeland Security adviser. She was on the Coronavirus Task force until earlier this summer. Now shes endorsing joe biden, because she says President Trump has hindered the United States response to the pandemic. She believes the president is more concerned about reelection than saving american lives. Heres more from olivia troy. Towards the middle of february, we knew it wasnt a matter of if covid would become a big pandemic here in the United States, it was a matter of when. But the president didnt want to hear that, because his biggest concern is that we were in an Election Year and how is this going to affect what he considered to be his record of success . It was shocking to see the president saying that the virus was a hoax, saying that everythings okay, when we know that its not. The truth is, he doesnt actually care about anyone else but himself. Troy also shared an interesting anecdote during a meeting. The president being told that he shouldnt be shaking hands with people and he was apparently relieved. Hed told the room, quote, i dont like shaking hands. I dont have to shake hands with these disgusting people. The white house, President Trump, Vice President pence all trying to discredit troy at this point. The president last night saying that 99 of the people who leave the administration and criticize him are lowerlevel people, essentially nobodies, who are then encouraged to go after him. Of course, john, we know thats not the case. There are plenty of highprofile names at the highest level of government who have served in this administration that have come out and criticized this president. People like james mattis, john bolton, john kelly, anthony scaramucci, the list goes on and on. John . Boris sanchez, one person noted on social media, the administration blames so many disgruntled former employees. It would be hard to find a gruntleded former employee at this point. Boris sanchez, thanks so much for being with us this morning. There is new information on what the administration did not do with masks months ago. And theres also this really interesting new line of attack from joe biden on President Trump. Thats coming up. One day well look back and remember the moment that things, for one strange time in our lives, got very quiet. Some lost work and invented new ways to get by. Others were busier than ever, and found strength they never knew they had. We sheltered with the people who matter most, sometimes finding how far apart wed drifted. We worried over loved ones, over money, over our planet. And over takeout. And we found a voice one the noise out there had kept quiet. When the world starts spinning again, lets remember this time where none of us felt secure, and fight for a future where everyone can. Because when the world seems like its standing still. Thats the perfect time for us to change it. Even as i look toward 65, one thing hasnt changed i still love getting on the ice. Which means i need to stay healthy. Now, as im thinking about selecting a medicare plan, i know i want one that has the kind of coverage that takes a total approach to my health. One that connects all the different parts of my health care to keep me aging actively. Aetna medicare. Keep doing what you love. Proof i can fight moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. Proof i can fight psoriatic arthritis. With humira. Proof of less joint pain. And clearer skin in psa. Humira targets and blocks a source of inflammation that contributes to joint pain and irreversible damage. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections. Serious and sometimes fatal infections, including tuberculosis, and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Humira is proven to help stop further joint damage. Want more proof . Ask your rheumatologist about humira citratefree. If you cant afford your medicine, abbvie may be able to help. What bill barr recently said is outrageous. That is like slavery. Were taking away freedom. I would tell you what takes away your freedom. What takes away your freedom is not being able to see your kid, not being able to go to the Football Game or baseball game. Not being able to see your mom or dad sick in the hospital. Not being able to do the things. Thats what costs our freedom. And its been the failure of this president to deal, to deal with this virus. And he knew about it so there were these dueling events last night between former Vice President joe biden in pennsylvania at a cnn town hall and in wisconsin President Trump held a Campaign Rally. So voters got to see their different approaches and plans for getting out of this pandemic. Joining us now is cnn medical analyst, dr. Jonathan reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington university and cardiologist for former Vice President dick cheney. Dr. Reiner, it was really helpful to see both of these president ial candidacy spell out what they would do differently. So what President Trump said hes doing differently is hes changing the name of his rallies, because rallies of more than ten people in some places, more than 50 in other, arent allowed, so hes changing the name. Thats his plan . And well contrast that with what joe biden said about that. Here you go. By the way, officially, this is called a protest, you know that. We no longer call it rallies. We dont use the term rally, okay . Rachel knows. We dont call them rallies anymore, because, you know, youre not allowed to have a political rally for more than ten people. Youre not allowed to go to church, youre not allowed to meet, youre not allowed to talk to anybody. You have to stay in a prison. Your home has become your prison. We should be careful across the board, across the board, but there is a big difference between people walking, moving along, and people sitting down, cheektojowl, shouldertoshoulder, a thousand of them, breathing on one another, indoors and out, that causes real serious problems. So it was interesting, dr. Reiner, to hear their different impressions of rallies and protests and danger. To me, as a doctor, i watched both of those events last night and to me it seemed like the Vice President was living in the world in which i live, you know, a world where people are getting sick and were trying to protect each other and the Vice President the current president , is living in a fantasy land. The president looks like an arsonist who masquerades as a fireman. And everywhere he goes, he sets a new fire. He pretends to put them out, but what hes really doing is igniting the blaze all over the country. And the reason why he tells his followers were calling this a protest, is because his rallies are illegal in most places. Gathering that many people, particularly without strict social distancing and face mask requirements is illegal in most communities, or many communities in the United States. So he gets around this by saying that this is a protest. Its not a protest. The president is really just flouting the precautions that we know would save lives. Its infuriating. Its really, really maddening. They also talk i mean, joe biden talked about his plan for what he would do to get us out of this. And im not sure if we have that sound, but i can also just read it for you. Basically, its that here it is. Listen to this. I would make sure that i would call every governor in the country into the white house, say, you should be putting mandates out. And if they dont, i would call the mayors in their towns and their cities and say, put out mandates. You can save lives. Okay, so, obviously, President Trump also talked to governors and mayors during the height of this. It wasnt a coordinated effort, in terms of calling them all to the white house to get everybody on the same page. And it also wasnt clear that President Trump ever told them that what they should be doing was putting out mask mandates. Right. And often what the president did when he had these discussions with governors was to urge them to open as quickly as possible. You know, so from the beginning, the president has been focused on trying to open the economy. I understand that. But we have a pandemic. So the task force that we never see anymore, i mean, is dr. Birx in witness protection. Where is she . We never see the task force anymore. And the president does everything he can to try and give the appearance that the pandemic is over, that were rounding the final corner into the sunlight. The vaccine, when its finally approved, and i hope its approved as quickly and as safely as possible, is not the end, its just sort of the end of the beginning. But the president just wants that trophy. He feels that thats his ticket to reelection. And thats what hes solely focused on right now. It is interesting, on the mask mandate, made a little bit of news last night, he clarified his position on that, saying he did not think the federal government could issue a nationwide mask mandate. You could do it on federal lands and federal buildings, he would pressure governors to do in their states and local leaders in their areas. Dr. Reiner, i want to ask you about another bit of news thats come out in the last 24 hours. This is from the Washington Post. They report that there was a plan being discussed to send masks to every house in america. Let me read this to you. This was in the form of a post office draft letter, all right . A draft letter that the post office had. This is a press release the post office was going to release. The u. S. Postal Service Today announced it will distribute 650 million reusable cotton face coverings on behalf of the department of health and Human Services to every single residential port in america, to areas identified as high transmission rates of covid19. This was back in april when the cdc was beginning to tell people that everyone should wear masks and the president was saying, yeah, but im not going to do it. They didnt do it, the post reports, because, quote, there was concern from some of in the White House Domestic Council policy and the office of the Vice President that households receiving masks might create concern or panic. So, again, this in the context of what weve learned from bob woodward, that the president says he downplayed the pandemic and still was and really still is intentionally with the idea that there was a plan to send masks to everybody, but it was scrapped for, i guess, political concerns, what does that tell you . And what difference might it have made if they had gone through with that plan, doctor . When i read that last night, i was just devastated by it. Because that one decision probably has cost about 150,000 lives. Remember, the cdc finally recommended face coverings to all americans going out in public on april 3rd. And right around that time, hhs partnered with the u. S. Postal service to distribute 650 Million Masks. They were going to send five masks to every household. Remember, the Postal Service goes everywhere, right . So they were going to do this, they were going to start in places like louisiana and go to new york and other hot spots and new jersey. And finally, you know, disseminate these masks throughout the country. But remember, the president was trying to play down the virus. He told this to wood ward, he was trying to play it down, so they didnt send the masks. They didnt send the masks. So now imagine an alternative reality where those masks were sent out. And significantly more people in this country wore masks. Where we would be now . Probably somewhere like germany. We would probably have about 40,000 deaths in the United States right now. Some time over this weekend, we will pass 200,000 deaths and climbing. You know, what the Vice President said last night is probably true. Im not sure the president can mandate masks everywhere, but the president can set the tone. And americans are largely rule followers. If the president says were all going to wear masks, even if he cant give you a ticket if you dont, most americans will wear masks. And we had a plan in april to do this, but this president focused solely on what he thought was important to him, which was not panicking the stock market. Nix that. Its a crime dr. Reiner, were out of time, but i do want to say that the white house says that they did distribute 600 million of those 650 Million Masks ordered, but they did so to faithbased and Community Organizations and to health care facilities, not to every household. Obviously, this was found out through a foia request and, you know, good journal. So we will continue to follow whether that is actually true and if those numbers are accurate. The masks did go where they needed to go. Joe biden making the push for working class voters. He draws the distinction about his roots in scranton versus President Trumps. Will that sway swing state voters . Well tell you what he said. When i was in high school, this was the theater i came to quite often. The support weve had over the last few months has been amazing. Some new language at the cnn town hall last night in scranton, pennsylvania, with the former Vice President making a direct appeal to working class voters in a way he really hasnt before. Listen. I really do view this campaign as a campaign between scranton and park avenue. Grew up here in scranton. Were used to guys who look down their nose at us. Were used to people who look at us and think were suckers, look at us and think that were not equivalent to them. If you didnt have a college degree, you must be stupid. If in fact you didnt get to go to an ivy school. p inherited everything and squandered what they inherited are the people that ive always had a problem with. Joining us now, cnn political commentator, errol louis and cnn Global Affairs analyst, susan glasser. Just a fact check, trump tower is on fifth avenue, not park avenue, that im sure the biden team would love to have that come up. And someone else has got to stand up for these ivy league kids. Joe biden, merciless attack on Ivy League Education last night. But this was new language i havent heard from the Vice President. In some ways, its language ive heard from those in the Clinton Campaign wished they had used more. Why might it be effective . What did you think . And do you think well hear more of it . I think we are going to hear more of it. I think it is effective. And the great mystery is why he hasnt done this sooner. The reality is, he would talk about himself as a kid from scranton and so forth. Well, the nation got a chance to see what that means. Just listening to the stories that the various audience members were sharing with the candidate. And you go and look, and i had never really looked at it, but the Median Income in scranton is under 40,000 a year. It really is a tough place to try to raise a family. It really is a tough place to try to keep your income going, especially during the pandemic. Thats who joe biden is. Its the brand that hes built up over decades. And its going to serve him well, because he is talking to people and not faking it. I think we got a real taste of that last night. And its ironic in a way, because he spent so much of his time in the halls of power. And highwae is a very powerful n who has had quite a lot of achievement, second to none, really, in politics. But if what you really care about is whether or not you have a president who knows where youre coming from, he gave himself, i think he did himself a real favor by going back to his roots last night. Susan, ironies abound. Because as you know, President Trump has tried to seize the mantle, effectively, he has seized the mantle of being somehow blue collar or populist or speaking the same language as those folks, when, in fact, as joe biden pointed out, he was a millionaire from the getgo. Thats right. Whats always struck me is trumps mystifying ability to sort of present himself as not only a populist, but the tribune of the people. He uses this line all the time. He was at a rally again last night. He talked about how, you know, when people in the media bubble, when people in politics talk down at regular people, theyre actually, you know, criticizing trump, criticizing them. And somehow its worked for all of this time. Its interesting, because democrats showed in 2012, running against romney that this kind of regularguy populism generally has played in their favor. And romney was mercilessly skewed as an out of touch wealthy guy with a car elevator. Well, donald trump is an out of touch rich guy with even more richyrich guy taste than mitt romney. So ive always thought this was a possibility for biden. As you heard in his voice, his disdain is real and his anger. He used to be the poorest member of the senate. So he has some credibility on this argument. So over the last 24 hours, really even over the last few hours, errol, something fascinating has happened. Donald trump flying back and forth to his event in wisconsin was attacking his own fbi director, Christopher Wray. Why . Because the fbi director in sworn testimony to congress talked about current russian efforts to undermine the u. S. Election to hurt joe biden. I want you to listen to the contrast between what Christopher Wray is saying under oath and what were hearing from the president and also the attorney general of the United States. Listen. Oh, we dont have it. Do we have any Christopher Wray sound . Okay, heres Christopher Wray. We certainly have seen very active, very active efforts by the russians to influence our election in 2020 through what i would call more of the maligned foreign influence side of things. Social media, use of proxies, state media, online journals primarily to denigrate Vice President biden. And what the russians see as kind of an antirussian establishment. So on twitter last night, errol, the president was all kinds of upset about that, saying, what about china, what about china . William barr with wolf blitzer the other week, just sort of tried to push off the russia thing and talked about china as well. This is clearly the fbi director with a firm, solid split, i think. Yeah, absolutely. And this is one example among many. Were seeing it on the Public Health side, where you have the cdc director saying one thing and the president contradicting him. Here we have the fbi director, telling us something that i think the public largely already knew, or there was abundant evidence. And again, the president contradicting him. And it goes to show a level of turmoil within this administration that ultimately is going to become a political issue, in the hands of joe biden. What biden is going to do say, look, they cant even get their stories straight. They cant figure out how to protect us from the russians, they cant figure out how to protect our elections, they cant figure out how to protect us from the coronavirus. It becomes part of the central argument of this campaign from bidens point of view, which is that youve got a white house that is out of control. Susan, i want to move on to olivia troy. Olivia troy was a member of the white house Coronavirus Task force. Possibly more importantly, she was Vice President s Homeland Security adviser. This was no lowlevel functionary. This was somebody who was plugged in, and she has just left the white house and she is now speaking out, because she was so appalled by the things that she saw there and wants the public to know. So here is a bit of the video that she put together. Towards the middle of february, we knew it wasnt a matter of if covid would become a big pandemic here in the United States, it was a matter of when. But the president didnt want to hear that, because his biggest concern was that we were in an Election Year, and how is this going to affect what he considered to be his record of success . It was shocking to see the president saying that the virus was a hoax. Saying that everythings okay, when we know that its not. The truth is, he doesnt actually care about anyone else but himself. So in the middle of february, they knew it was going to be a deadly pandemic, but President Trump didnt want to hear it. I know you spoke to her. So tell us what she said to you. Well, you know, alisyn, it was very interesting to speak with her. Shes the very first person who has served as a white house staff member on the Coronavirus Task force. She was there from day one. And she said she was speaking out now because of the continued lies and misrepresentations from President Trump about the coronavirus. She was very concerned about the politicization of the virus, for example, before the election. She was working in the white house, attending those Coronavirus Task force meetings until the end of july. And you know, what she said was very interesting. She said, most, not all, but most of the people she felt were genuinely had americans best interests at heart, but they were continually and i struck by the words she used, derailed by the man at the top. And she found him not only focused solely on the election, but there were several times, not once, but several times when trump would come into the room of the Coronavirus Task force, they would try to get him to focus on the business at hand, and he would be ranting and raving about fox news and how they werent being nice enough to him. And, you know, you sort of smile because, as i asked her, were you surprised by that. She said, no, you know, in fact, that was exactly what you would imagine he was like, is what he was like in private. But unfortunately, you know, its really eerie to me to have this voice from inside the room, now that 200,000 people have died. Thats such Important Information for our viewers and voters to hear. Susan, errol, thank you. So a federal judge has temporarily blocked a wide range of recent policy changes at the u. S. Post office. The judge accused the postmaster general of engaging in, quote, voter disenfranchisement and suppression. The language, honestly, in this ruling is just scathing. The judge also called for the Postal Service to treat all election mail as first class and for any equipment that was dismantled to be reinstalled. Now, its not clear how that can happen. A developing story in israel this morning. A resurgence of coronavirus has forced a second nationwide lockdown, just as the jewish new year convince its sun down tonight. It comes as the number of coronavirus cases reached a new high of nearly 5,000 a day. Cnns Oren Liebermann is live in jerusalem. This lockdown goes into effect today, oren. Correct . Reporter this lockdown goes into effect in less than 30 minutes at 2 00 p. M. Local time. The number yesterday, 5,200 cases according to ministry of health data. Not a record, but surely an indication that the number of coronavirus cases, the number of daily diagnoses continues to rise and thats why Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says this lockdown is necessary. But if you look at israel today, its almost as if there are two different stories. One is the foreign policy, which netanyahu celebrated on the lawn of the white house earlier this week with bahrain and the uae. He pointed out that he was proud to have made peace with two arab countries in 29 days. Then, theres the domestic policy. And the domestic situation in israel. In that same 29day period, from august 13th to september 11th, there were 62,000 new cases in israel. Thats about a third of the total cases since the beginning of the pandemic. And there were 446 deaths within that same time frame. Thats about 40 of the deaths from the pandemic, from the coronavirus. So there are major problems here domestically, as netanyahu celebrates what hes able to accomplish with his foreign policy. And its not just the coronavirus. Its the economy with unemployment at 18 , according to the israel unemployment service, protests, thousands of people are protesting on a weekly basis outside the Prime Ministers residence, calling on him to resign, and that hasnt even gotten to the Prime Ministers legal problems. Hes been charged with bribery, fraud, breach of trust. He has maintained his innocence. His truly truly begins in earnest in january when a panel of judges will begin hearing from witnesses. All of that has simply added to the chaos and confusion domestically within the one. Meanwhile, those restrictions seem to be changing on a nearly daily basis. In fact, netanyahu held a press conference last night to announce that despite the high rise in cases, the only change he would make to loosen one of the restrictions. Everyone could now travel about a half a mile from their home instead of a quarter mile with Health Experts warning this current wave of restrictions wont be enough to contain israels surging coronavirus numbers. Alisyn . Oren, thank you very much for the status report from israel. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization warns of, quote, a very serious situation in europe. Cases there spiking to levels not seen since march. Cnns scott mclean is live in london with more. Whats happening there, scott . Reporter hey, alisyn. This summer, some normality started to return to the uk. And for a while, it seemed like maybe we were out of the woods. But as restrictions eased, the virus started to come back with a real vengeance. Now its starting to show up in older segments of the population and even in care homes, as well. Hospitalizations are now doubling in the uk every eight days. Just as the Government Faces a shortage of tests. Despite the fact that it does more testing than any other country in europe. Its having to prioritize. More than a third of the tests are having to be set aside for care homes alone. In parts of northeast england, the government has also effectively barred almost all inperson socializing with anyone outside of your own household. And if these measures cant effectively tamp down this second wave of the virus, well, the health secretary, hes not ruling out the nuclear option. Listen. But a National Lock down is the last line of defense. It is, you know, as we saw in the spring, it is the thing that we can do to keep people safe, if thats needed. So were watching vigilantly, but we can see this number of cases accelerating, as you say, and were prepared to do what it takes to protect lives and to protect livelihoods. And, of course, both are so important. Reporter and the w. H. O said yesterday that these latest numbers out of europe ought to be a wakeup call. The second wave of the virus has eclipsed the first one, though. This time around, its been a lot less deadly. In france, for instance, theyre seeing two or three times more daily cases than they had in april, but only a sixth of the hospitalizations. Alisyn . Well, thats a relief. And were going to talk to the World Health Organization later in the program. Scott, thank you very much. I cant fathom what would have happened if the Insurance Companies had the power to say, the last few months, youre on your own. The fact of the matter is health care is personal to me. Obamacare is personal to me. When i see the president of the United States try to eliminate this health care in the middle of a Public Health crisis, thats personal to me too. Weve got to build on what we did because every american deserves Affordable Health care. Im joe biden and i approve this message. A good education takes you many different horizons and that sticked to my mind. So, when 1 a day came out, i said, why not . Why not just utilize that resource. And walmart made that path open for me. Without the 1 a day program, i definitely dont think id be in school right now. Each week for me in school is just an accomplishment. I feel proud every step of the way. And as i look toward 65, is just ahi, im dorothy hamill. I know i want Medicare Coverage that can help me stay active. Like aetna medicare that takes a total, connected approach to my health. Aetna medicare. Keep doing what you love. The nations Largest School district, new york city Public Schools, pushing back its timeline for getting students back into the classrooms. Cnns Bianna Golodryga joins us now with more. So what happened, bianna . Reporter alisyn, you can imagine, this is not sitting very well with many new york city parents and the local media. Just three days before new York City Schools were set to reopen schools for monday, the mayor announced there would be a twoweek delay, that they would be slowly integrating students back in as opposed to all k12 students returning. So on monday, prek and special needs students will be returning back to school. Then next week, september 29th, youll have Elementary School students returning. Then october 1st, two days later, middle school and high School Students will be returning. And heres why. There has been a ton of pressure from the teachers unions, from the principals unions, saying they need more testing, they need more buildings to be better equipped for ventilation properly. They need more ppe and they need more teachers. The mayor initially said they would hire 2,000 more teachers. Now he said in addition to those 2,000, another 2,500 teachers will be required. But mayor de blasio was just on cnn with wolf blitzer the other day and said that this was the gold standard, were set to go. So you can understand the frustration for many parents saying, listen, youve screwed up our schedules, now this is the second time youve delayed reopening and this is only a matter of days, so what really can be done in a matter of five to six days. This is a pressing issue here in new york city. All eyes will be on new york city as it reopens. But we know the rest of the country, the majority of the School Districts are online. And that doesnt mean things are going smoothly, as well. There was a startling revelation from the ceo of the baltimore Public School district, who said fewer than twothirds of students there were able to fully log on for instruction a week and a half into classes being reopened and the semester starting. And this is really troubling. Some were not using official accounts and that hasnt been factored in. But it does send a message that a lot of students have fallen through the cracks and whats happening now is theyre going to have Public Workers go out and try to find these students and have them log on once again and get back into the school system. Its not just in baltimore, its happening in many cities across the country. Look, bianna, obviously, its complicated, but i know a lot of the frustration from parents in a lot of cities is, theres been months to get ready for this. And they feel as if that the city should be prepared at this point and should have come back with more complete plan now. Bianna golodryga, thank you very much. New trouble in the tropics this morning. A depression churning in the gulf of mexico is forecast to become a Tropical Storm later today. Cnn meteorologist Allison Chinchar tracking it all for us. Allison . Yeah, good morning. And theres a lot actually out there. Take a look at all of these systems coming off the coast of africa, just sitting in the eastern atlantic. But yes, the more imminent threat for us will be tropical depression 22, currently sitting in the gulf of mexico. Lets get to that forecast, brought to you by jared, because love cant wait, and with jared, it doesnt have to. The specifics of tropical depression 22 right now, its only moving at sustained winds of about 35 miles per hour. That Forward Movement to the northnortheast of 6 miles per hour. But its what does it do from here . Because youll notice it, just kind of meanders throughout much of the gulf of mexico. What this means is that a lot of states are at play here, especially when it comes to rainfall. Because its going to hover along the coastline and again, none of the models really have much consensus. Some have it going to mexico, some have it go to texas, some have it go to louisiana. But at the end of the day, we do expect a pretty tremendous amount of rainfall right here along the gulf. Widespread, were looking at 4 to 6 inches of rain, but there could be a pockets here, 7, 8, if as much as potentially 10 inches of rain as this storm edges close. Its going to be a close one for us to keep an eye on where that goes. Were also watching hurricane teddy. This is a strong category 1 hurricane. This particular track takes it up towards bermuda.
