Pretty puzzled and rather disheartened. I think hes pulling the punches there, i think hes being careful with the language. Jonathan reiner he called it criminal negligence. What do you think . Yeah. I think it is. I mean, especially given now that we know what the president knew and when he knew it in terms of the danger of events like this. It was interesting. I have known dr. Collins, he was my genetics professor in school and that was Strong Language for him. Hes not very political but he said he made this analogy, if an alien came from another planet and said theres a pathogen circulating the globe right now, some people are protecting themselves, other peoples are not and the reason theyre doing it is breaking down along political lines, it would completely make no sense to someone who visited this planet. But thats what were seeing right now and clearly, michigan if you look at the numbers whats happening in michigan, they sort of you know, they had the lowest sort of numbers middle of june. The numbers have been going up. They have a mask ordinance in place. They have a Group Gathering sort of ordinance in place. This violates the ordinances that michigan is putting in place, trying to prevent the outbreak from getting worse and then the worst thing that happens there this is my home state, the worst thing that happens there is a president ial rally comes into town and possibly leads to another super spreader event. You cant even you cant even believe it. David axelrod, i mean, as sanjay just referred to, as we know from the tapes, that the president knew it was airborne and that it was five times as deadly as the flu and since that time, hes held all of these rallies. I think that we counted Something Like 16, maybe more. I mean, including up until through last night. And you know, i mean, i dont know if you need to be a space alien to be confused by this. Even some earthlings are confused by us and our jim acosta went to the rally and talked to the people about why they were willing to risk their health so let me play this for you. Why are you guys not Wearing Masks . I have one with me. Its my prerogative. But why not wear one and stay safe . I have a hard time understanding people when they talk. So thats why i dont wear it. But you can hear me right through . I can hear you. Why are you not wearing a mask . Because theres no covid. Its a fake pandemic. Created to destroy the United States of america. But the president said to bob woodward that there is a virus, the coronavirus and that its deadly. Thats his opinion. The truth is that the cdc said only less than 10,000 people died from covid. The other 190,000 have 2. 6 or 2. 8 other mortalities. Where are you guys in the crowded space . Im not afraid. The good lord takes care of me. If i die, i die. We have to get this country moving. Wear masks and stay inside for another year . Huh . What will that get you . David axelrod, youre an expert in political messaging. There you go, thats the byproduct. I mean, this im almost speechless listening to those testimonials. Even though theyre not unexpected. This is the line that has been pushed, you know, on right wing media for months and months and months and these people have absorbed that and the president has been a super spreader of some of these theories himself. The thing from the beginning and the woodward book underscores it, the president of the United States has been at once the leader of the government thats supposed to respond to the greatest pandemic in 100 years and the leader of the resistance to the guidance that the government is putting out. And that tension has really, really been devastating and has resulted in the unnecessary deaths of probably thousands of americans and the fact that he continues to this day to do it is at once bewildering and sanjay mentioned the numbers in michigan. But the president s looking at different numbers in michigan. He is looking at the electoral numbers in michigan and he believes by being there and holding his rallies hes helping his cause there. Whether he is or not, is another thing. But dr. Fauci was quoted in the woodward book as saying the only thing he cares about is his reelection and i think were seeing examples of that right now. Its clear to me that the president can change minds on the pandemic if he chose to. He can change the minds i think of the three people we heard from jim acosta there if he spoke ago the need to wear a mask and change behavior. But he chooses not to. Sanjay, one of the things were luck one of the reasons were so lucky to have you you have a line on all of the key players in the pandemic. You talked about how you know dr. Collins personally and you talked to admiral giroir yesterday who is in charge of testing in this country and it was really interesting to hear him discuss testing with you now. I have to say it sounded an awful lot different from things i have heard from him in the past. Yeah, no question. There was a distinct change in tone and i have to tell you that, you know, what you have heard from him in the past, look, we dont test our way out of this and theres been a constant sort of minimizing of testing. When i asked him specifically about the numbers of test that we need going into the fall, listen to what he said. And what i want to do is create as many tests as possible. There will be a day where there will be athome tests that are widely available in the hundreds of millions that are cheap, that we can test as frequently as we want. And we had a little bit more of a conversation about that. It would be sort of this world where you can imagine having tests at home in the morning when youre brushing your teeth you can test yourself. If it came back positive youd stay home that day and stay home until the test came back negative. The test would be widely available. Theyd be cheap as you heard the admiral say. Very different than what he said before. Take a quick listen to this. Its great to talk about this utopian kind of idea where everybody has a test, every day, and we can do that. I dont live in the utopian world, i live in the real world. Not only do we not recommend this strategy of testing everyone on a frequent basis but i think it can instill a false sense of security. We are doing the appropriate amount of testing now to flatten the curve, save lives. 180 basically on this and im glad hes saying this because thats what most Public Health official just about every Public Health official is saying we need some version of for many, many months now. Theres a nuance. You know, we get the sort of obvious things, wear a mask at a rally, dont gather in large groups, stuff like that. It was really interesting to hear jim acostas interview with that one person, its a hoax, theres a few thousand people and the cdc has put out the strange guidelines on the website. They say people who have covid and who died also had the preexisting conditions and people are thinking, well, this preexisting conditions do it, covid is sort of a hoax. Its bad messaging and im starting to wonder if its deliberate. They did the same thing with asymptomatic testing. You dont necessarily to be tested if you dont have symptoms even if you have been in contact with someone with covid. Bad guidance. That came from the cdc. It is still confusing people. Even at the local level in many places around the country. It has been a really, really meddled messaging from them. Oh, sanjay, i couldnt agree more. When i sat down with some trump voters, one of them fastened on that too. That cdc guidance of only 6 of people didnt have a comorbidity. People have fastened on that. You can look for whatever facts or evidence you want, but that cdc thing has really i think loomed large in terms of their thinking. So, david, you know, were 50plus days away now. What did you think of President Trump last night, the things he was trying to say about all of the things that he disclosed to bob woodward and its Bob Woodwards fault he didnt alert the public if he heard something that was alarming about coronavirus. It should have been bob woodward to go tell people. Well, first of all, we should point out earlier in the day in the press conference he said he respected bob woodward and thats why he did 18 interviews with him and he told the rally at night that woodward was a whack job. I dont know what to make of that. Look, the bob woodward is not the president of the United States. The president of the United States has a sworn duty to protect the american people. He knew the truth. He made a decision to submerge the truth. He said it was not to cause a panic, he repeated that yesterday even as he made another speech in which he tried to set off a bunch of other panics among americans to try to foster his campaign. But i just if you guys would permit me, i want to return to sanjays point about the cdc for a second. The most distressing part of this and of course your question is part of this, is how the Public Health system in our country starting with the pronouncements of the United States have been subjugated to politics and has created a lack of trust that is necessary in a crisis like this and were going to pay for this when this vaccine comes. And people we need people to take the vaccine. We want people to take the vaccine. Once its proven to be effective and safe but there are going to be real doubts and when you start using Public Health organs like the cdc to promote political messaging you create a storm of mistrust. Im really, really worried about that. You know, sanjay is very discreet. He said you begin to wonder if this is politically oriented messaging. I dont wonder at all. I think the president and the white house have seized control of the messaging around this virus in ways they think will advantage him and reflects his own reluctance to share bad news that we saw on you know, that he described to bob woodward. It just continues to this day. Yeah. David axelrod, dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you very much. Have a nice weekend. You too. Cyou can join dr. Sanjay gupta and erica hill about the abcs of back to school tomorrow. Elmo makes things easier to understand and sanjay. I so agree. Joining us now is Elizabeth Newman and she resigned from the department of Homeland Security and shes part of American Voters against trump campaign. Elizabeth, thanks for being here. What are we to make of microsoft saying they have detected russian, chinese, iranian hackers targeting the election and what do we do about that . Thanks for having me, alisyn. I view the news that microsoft put out as a good sign. We have seen intel reports, the dni earlier this year saying that russia will do this. It is great that microsoft is detecting it and is sharing the information. I think theres great Public Servants at dhs, at the Intelligence Community level and theyre working strongly with the Tech Companies and they are doing what they need to do to secure this election. I feel very, very confident that the government is doing a much better job than we did in 2016. The Tech Companies are doing a better job. That said, it would help if we could have clear and consistent messaging from the very top of our government that in fact russia is an enemy when it comes to this matter. They are intending to sow dissent in our democracy. They are trying to undermine us through a variety of means and mechanisms and while we also have a similar problem posed by china and iran it is not nearly as sophisticated, not nearly as intense as what russia poses to the United States. Okay, im glad you pointed that out because the timing of this announcement is interesting particularly given that that whistleblower, brian murphy, came forward to say there was a concerted effort inside dhs to downplay russia and to elevate china and iran. So heres what just an excerpt of the whistleblower complaint. In mid may, mr. Wolf, who was the acting director of dhs, instructed the whistleblower, mr. Murphy, to cease providing intelligence assessments on the threat of russian interference in the u. S. And instead start reporting on the interference activities by china and iran. So, you know, forgive alarm bells for going off when something microsoft the next day says, oh, chinese, iranian and Russian Hackers are all doing this. Youre saying its not a level playing field, theyre not all equal. Correct, theyre not all equal. I think the American Public should be reassured that the professionals are doing the job correctly. It is very concerning to read what mr. Murphy put in the inspector generals whistleblower report that there appears to be this political tinkering with intelligence which is a huge red line. We are not supposed to do that. If true, huge problem. I dont have direct knowledge of it. I will say that when i read it, it struck me as consistent with changes we have seen across the government at the Intelligence Community. At dhs. In the last six to eight months we have seen a much more deliberate politicization of the institutions that have for 200 years been seen as apolitical. And as one of the previous guests noted the problem with that is that americans that the whole democracy or concept as a country is that americans are putting their trust in the government and the way that they address any concerns with their government is they vote people out of office. If you dont trust the institutions our democracy starts to falter and its very, very concerning because this leads to further mistrust of the government. Elizabeth, on this september 11th, because you were part of the very first Homeland Security council created in the Bush Administration right in the aftermath of 9 11, i just want to hear your thoughts, 19 years later, as we approach this moment of silence for the moment that the first plane hit the first tower. Yeah, look, im part of a generation of people that their entire career paths changed because of that day. Because the terror was so palpable and the drive we never ever wanted to experience that again on our soil. Its hard today to wake up and realize how unified we were and how we grieved together, how we lamented together 19 years ago. How we came together and decided were going to fight this and were going to fight this the right way and we made mistakes. I think we nearly 20 years we can always acknowledge mistakes were made over the last 20 years and hopefully were learning lessons from that. But here we are in 2020. You have more people dead from a disease, from covid. Which by the way, was predicted we would eventually have a pandemic. There were plans on the books for 15 years, we have more people dead from that than all of the terror attacks, 9 11 to the present day, and all of the service members, the u. S. Service members, men and women that went overseas to fight the war on terror. The number of those dead compared to the number of dead in just six short months from covid it doesnt even compare. Yet, you dont see the same type of lament or the same type of unification around well fight this disease, well care for those grieving. It is heart breaking because were better than this as a country. Yeah. Thats really important context. I mean, obviously today we mourn the loss of our 3,000 americans on that day and we mourn the loss of that unity that you talk about and that we all remember in those days after. Thank you very much for being with us this morning. The wildfire disasters are growing worse by the hour on the west coast. At least 15 people have been killed. Happening now, 100 wildfires burning across the western United States leaving more than 4 million acres burned and at least 15 people dead and that number is rising. The largest and most threatening fire in Northern California and oregon. The smoke has caused the truly apocalyptic images. Joining us from los angeles is erica smith. Thanks so much for being with us. Its been really instructive for me to read your columns because im not there. So many of us are not there. And i dont think were experiencing it quite like you are and you write while the spirits are not broken at all, there is this sense of dread. Why are those emotions important to convey right now . I mean, i think that california as our government has pointed out several times talking about Climate Change, we have gone through several disasters over the last five or six years. Most of the most destructive wild fires have happened over the last six years including the campfire which killed 85 people and that was a couple of years ago and on the same footprint really that the current north complex fire is burning right now. So you have populations of people who are again and again dealing with wildfires and mudslides and, you know, the threat of earthquakes which is always constant. So when you put that on top of the pandemic thats going on right now, its just a lot of stress and people are just having a lot of anxiety but theyre also very resilient because this is california and were used to big problems. I think its combination of two big things. You write about indignant anger, anger about what and directed at whom . I think thats mostly you know, in Northern California, we have a lot of folks who are obviously very much tied to the land and these are people who have lived in these same places for generations and they have seen the forest change. They have seen people move in from cities. They have seen development and so theres a lot of anger just about forest management, about whether or not we are doing enough controlled burns or back burns, whether or not we are taking down some of the trees that have been diseased during the drought a few years back. So theres some concern about what the u. S. Forest service is doing, some concerns about what the state is doing. So theres some anger about that and people disagreeing on basically what we should be doing versus what we are doing. How much do you perceive the rest of the nation to care, to fully appreciate whats happening . You know, you wake up in San Francisco with an orange sky and its got to be overwhelming. Yet, you know, you almost dont hear about it. Portland, the suburbs are burning right now. For a while, the president couldnt say two sentences about portland, oregon, but when its on fire he hasnt said it at all. Its disappointing not to hear the president not to speak up more about that, considering hes been so adamant about talking about portland as you mentioned and l. A. About homelessness. But were suffering out here and it would be good for him to pay some more attention to that. If youre not here in california, if you dont wake up with the orange sky or you cant walk a block without being winded because youre smelling so many particulates in the air its hard to appreciate that. I mean, the scope of these fires its massive. It really, really is. And i know you also write again, you mentioned it before, how coronavirus has complicated it, because you cant evacuate to the packed shelter. But i think that it has broader implications. How so . Well, it had broader implications just in general as you mentioned the shelters but its the packed hotels. Right now, we have a large Homeless Population in california and we have been sheltering a lot of folks in hotels and now we have a competition for those hotels between fire evacuees and people who are in the hotels and the rooms. The implications for firefighters, usually they would be in fire camps and would be more packed together but now because of the coronavirus restrictions that does limit where they can be and how close together they can be and i think theres long term implications on, you know were figuring out what to do with this pandemic, but luckily the cases are declining, going down. But theres a fear of a labor day spike after so many gatherings. Erica smith, we really appreciate you being with us. Thank you for the work youre doing and your writing. People should check it out to understand i think the range of feelings and the complicated factors for things that we dont often think about in the rest of the country. So thanks for being with us. Your case is so striking because you dont have any of the risk factors that we normally associate with this. What what have the six months been like . What are your symptoms today . Today i can only stand for a few minutes at a time. I turn purple, my hands and legs and i get light headed. I have to sit in the shower. My Blood Pressure gets to really scary ranges like its youd be considered having a heart attack and having to go to the er almost nightly. My heart rate doubles almost standing, i have blurry eyes. I feel like im going to faint, in and out most days, but sometimes ill go a few days without feeling like that i cant watch tv or read and my memorys gone. My god, jennifer, it sounds like hell. I mean, this is not what most people experience. What have doctors have doctors been able to give you an answer why you a Healthy Woman with no preexisting conditions have been having these symptoms for so long . I think at first doctors were confused, they didnt know what to do with me when i got in to see one which was quite a while later but when i was hospitalized they seeing i developed post viral tachycardia, so the heart rate goes super high. I have damage to my autonomic nervous system. They said some of the things happen with serious viruses and at first, they were like we havent heard of this. But as the months go on, it becomes more and more of a normal thing and the doctors and nurses are like, oh, youre a covid long hauler, we know about people like. Like when i was in the er last weekend. Last weekend it sounded like you had shortness of breath. What were you feeling last weekend . At night, i wake up and i gasp for air, and my Blood Pressure skyrockets to scary ranges and i my heart rate gets to 180 which is really fast. It happens a lot and it started to happen really significantly for days in a row. And normally, i get kind of breaks with it. So i called the doctor and i was like, something has got to give, can somebody see me this week and they said, no, you need to go directly to the er which i try to avoid or id be there every night. Oh, my. You have said you have had cognitive issues and hallucinations. When i wake up whatever the symptoms it feels like im having a heart attack or a stroke, my eyesight is really blurry. There was one night i saw a witch in front of the closet and i have seen just like weird visions and im not sleeping, im very awake and coherent and i can move so its not sleep paralysis or anything like that. Its very real and very scary. I believe you. Youre not crazy. We have had people on who described hallucinations. Im sure you feel alone, but there are groups of long haulers who have described this. What have doctors said they can do for you at this point . Doctors are not getting too much information on what to do so theyre treating symptom by symptom for what they have done for pots previously. Its rest, we dont know. Were really, really sorry. Im on heart medications which is insane. Im i take about 10 to 15 different vitamins, salt pills to help. Oh, my gosh, jennifer, were praying for you. Were thinking of you. We hope that this ends soon. I know you have endured this for so long. Well check back with you because you shouldnt have to go through all of this obviously alone. Thanks so much for sharing your story and letting us know what can happen when you test positive for covid. Thank you. Take care of yourself. Joe biden has arrived at the september 11th celebration in lower manhattan. Thats up next. A moment of silence to honor the victims of the attacks on september 11, 2001, 19 years ago this morning. Gordon m. Aamoth jr. Edelmiro abad maria rose abad Andrew Anthony abate vincent abate what youre hearing now is the reading of the names of the victims of the september 11th attacks. This time, this year, for the first time, they have been recorded obviously because of coronavirus concerns. They cant be done in person. 8 46 a. M. , the time when we heard the bells a moment ago, the moment of silence, the exact time that the first plane struck the north tower. There will be commemorations throughout the day here in new york city, also at the pentagon and in shanksville, pennsylvania. We will be following this throughout the day. In the meantime, we are joined by minister and social justice activist reverend barber. Thank you and we appreciate your time here. Obviously this is such a poignant day for all of us. Those of us who lived through it. Those of us who are here in new york and an entire country and it is remembered as a time when we as a country did come together. Why is it important to have those moments and i think in some ways to have those memories of coming together. I was holding my 5monthold son when the first plane hit the tower. And i wonder what kind of world had we brought him into. And im thinking this morning on september 11th, we must remember all those who died and as a person of faith i must remember all of the innocent people who were killed here as well as all of the innocent people who would be later killed, thousands of them in iraq and afghanistan because of the decisions of a few with power and weaponry. We must develop an eternal commitment to stand against needless and senseless death, be unified about that. And to remember those who died must mean that we resolve to stand against all forms of whats called necropolitics, the politics of death. Whether its domestic terrorism, the terrorism of the black and brown communities, Police Brutality and the refusal to face a pandemic, the lack of health care, deaths from raging fires pause we have refused to address Climate Change this is what 9 11 says to me. We cant hide from the death. We cant forget it. We must let ourselves be horrified by and hopeful that it scares us to life, that that we be reminded that we [ indiscernible ]. To peace and to justice and to love. No matter how big and powerful our bond, our weaponry, this world cannot survive this unified. We cannot survive constant wars and rumors of wars and nations against nations and race against race. We must find ways to be committed to unity together with one another. Rooted in love and justice and truth. So bishop, 19 years ago i was on my honeymoon, i was in italy and we watched live as we watched the towers fell. Ill never forget the way that italians and other tourists around us lifted us up that way. They wept with us. There were store fronts in italy for weeks saying we stand with america. People were so heartbroken, you know, because i had that international experience, i got to see everybody was on the side of the americans after that. And everybody just was with us in grief and solidarity and i do aggrieve the loss of that feeling of unity and i dont know how were supposed to get that back. I think in some ways, even more than being on the side of americans, people are on the side of humanity. For a moment, we saw that the senseless death, the killing of children and women and people and people ended up jumping out of the tower and people got caught up in what it means to be human. We need that same sense. You know, it is a sad thing when we have leaders dividing us now in the midst of thousands of people dying, nearly 200,000 people, more than died on september the 11th. More than have died in times of war. Humanity theres a sense in which we must become not just americans and afghanistannys and iranianis, but human beings who are great in one sense and terribly fragile in another sense and recognize this country and this world cannot stand, the center cannot hold if were constantly destroying one another and dismissing once another and living in the politics of death and division. We just cant. So we have to have the people come together. We are looking at live pictures from ground zero here in new york city, near the world trade center. We saw former Vice President joe biden moments ago with governor andrew cuomo. Mike pence is there as well and there was a moment when joe biden and mike pence did greet each other there. So there was a moment at least for people where people did come together. You talked about death. And you said something before that struck me. You said we need to be horrified by death. And i wonder now as we talk about the pandemic, another tragedy and disaster, we have the number on the screen, 191,000 americans have been killed. I wonder if you think were sufficiently horrified by death or whether over the last few months we have become numb to it and why. Well, one of the things is we have not faced the reality that america must come to the place i preached a sermon called america must decide death is not an option anymore. How ever that death particularly when it comes as a result of Public Policy. You know, before covid ever happened, we had 700 people dying a day from poverty and low wealth. We had thousands dying from the lack of health care and then we have seen the horrible deaths and lynchings on camera of black men from Police Brutality. But at some point we have to decide that this death, all of this death, particularly created by the Public Policy and decisions is contrary to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and contrary to the establishment of justice and to promoting the general welfare. It who we are called to be and who we say we are. We have to get past ceremonial unity. Im bothered by ceremonial unity, to be quite honest. When you can go to the event like this and shake hands and this evening be back at one anothers throat. My question would be when is somebody like going to be a pence going to be say, wait a minute. If we can stand here at this memorial for just a second, for just a second, then why cant we unify and make sure that everybody has health care and stops dying. Why cant we unify around masks and ppe, why cant we unify around people having sick leave and unemployment and making sure their water is cut off . Because for some reason after the ceremony people go back to their individual greed and meanness. In my faith tradition thats called sin. Thats whats called and sin always has wages and the wages of sin is always death. So the people were going to have to start making sure that we say no more of this ceremonial stuff. Because we have learned that lives and we learned it in the iraqi war but now we have learned it at another degree. Disunity cause death. People die innocently that dont have to i pray that well be scared us to life and to scare us to coming together. We dont have much time left and i know youre planning a National Voter event this monday. The democratic nominee, joe biden, is coming. I know you have invited President Trump as well, you have not received a response. Tell us what youre hoping to get out of this. This morning our nation remembers one of the greatest national tragedies. And at the same time, battles a deadly crisis still ravaging the country. Its been 19 years since the world watched as terrorists attacked this country, our people and our democracy. 2,977 people lost their lives, many thousands more were injured. Right now, Memorial Services are under way in new york and here in washington. The president is set to attend a ceremony this morning in shanksville, pennsylvania, where the fourth aircraft went down. But honoring each of those precious lives lost does not look like it has in years past. The events today are scaled back as this pandemic hangs over the country. We mourn the deaths now of nearly 192,000 americans who have died from
