6 00 here in new york. Alisyn is off. Erica hill with me here this morning. Happy dlalabor day. Happy labor day to you. Its exciting to be in a studio again, too. Its nice to be near real people. Yeah. If you consider me a real person. Well get into that. But its not a quiet holiday. And holiday weekends a big flashing danger signs for coronavirus. And this morning, we have pictures like this, beaches pretty packed over the holiday weekend. And celebrations like this one in San Francisco raising fears of a new spike in cases in what could ultimately lead to deaths. Were getting new information about colleges this morning, with some campuses the sites of runaway spread. Thousands of cases in all 50 states now linked to the reopening of colleges and universities. Meantime, there is new reporting that President Trump putting pressure on Health Officials for a Coronavirus Vaccine before election day. And now the wall street journal reports at least three of the Companies Working to develop a Coronavirus Vaccine are joining in an unusual pledge. Theyre promising not to seek approval until the vaccines have been proven safe and effective. We also have new details this morning about former trump fixer Michael Cohens new book. And there is new fallout over the report detailing the president s alleged comments disparaging American Service members, including those killed in battle. There is a lot happening on this holiday monday. We begin with cnns rosa flores in miami beach, florida, where there are concerns of a new coronavirus spike. Reporter erica, good morning. Labor Day Celebrations have been in full swing all weekend long, and are expected to continue today. Experts, of course, are very concerned that this could lead to yet another spike of coronavirus cases, just like the one we saw after memorial day weekend and the fourth of july. Thats why experts this time are making a plea, keep gatherings small, keep them outside, and wear a mask. Large crowds from coast to coast this Labor Day Weekend reinforcing Health Experts fears of another holiday spike of new cases going into the fall. I am concerned. We go into labor day with 40,000 new cases a day, much higher than we were at memorial day. So im worried that any new surges will be potentially quite catastrophic. In San Francisco, the city closed the parking lot at ocean beach after more than a thousand people gathered for a burning man style event. Mayor london breed calling it reckless and selfish. And people flocking to beaches up and down the east coast to celebrate the end of the summer. This as colleges across the country are struggling to contain outbreaks on campuses. Northeastern university dismissing 11 students for violating the schools Public Health protocols by gathering in a hotel room offcampus. The students will not receive a refund for the lost semester. We remain on track to deliver a vaccine before the end of the year and maybe even before november 1st. The cdc asking states to be ready to distribute a potential Coronavirus Vaccine by late october. Just before the election. Causing concern that the vaccine will be politicized, given the proximity to election day. No vaccine will be distributed before election day, even if we identify a vaccine which looks both safe and effective, the Distribution Plan is going to be really complex. Two former fda commissioners tell cnn it is possible, but very unlikely, that President Trump could pressure scientists to approve a Coronavirus Vaccine. Democratic Vice President ial nominee Kamala Harris remains skeptical. I would not trust donald trump. And it would have to be a credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability of whatever hes talking about. I will not take his word for it. He wants us to inject bleach. In an attempt to calm any public concern around getting the vaccine, the wall street journal reports pfizer, moderna, and Johnson Johnson plan to pledge not to seek fda approval for a vaccine until they can ensure it is safe and effective. If we push out something that is not skpaf haafe and harms pet will ruin our ability to not only disseminate this vaccine but all vaccines, mumps, whooping cough, polio. The last thing we need is a resurgence of those things because people lose their trust. Now, even if the fda approved a vaccine and deemed it safe and effe effective, americans appear to be skeptical of the agency. Just like this latest cbs news ugov. Poll shows, they asked americans and americans determined that even if the vaccine was released this year, at no cost to americans, only 21 of those surveyed say that they would actually take the vaccine as soon as possible. Erica . Rosa flores with the latest for us. Thank you. This morning, the editor in chief of the atlantic magazine saying his story about President Trump calling Fallen Service members losers and suckers is just the beginning. This as a parade of Administration Officials hit the sunday talk shows to defend the president. Cnns joe johns is live at the white house this morning with more. Joe, good morning. Reporter good morning, erica. Aggressive pushback from the Trump Administration on that explosive reporting in the atlantic, asserting that the president did refer to fallen war heroes killed in action as suckers and losers and that the president decided not to go to a Veterans Cemetery in france because he was afraid the rain would mess up his hair. The editor of the atlantic magazine saying he believes this is just the tip of the iceberg. Listen. There is a sense of horror about the way he acts and behaves and talks. And so i would fully expect let me just say it this way, i would fully expect more reporting to come out about this. And more confirmation. And new pieces of information in the coming days and weeks. Trump Administration Officials over the weekend, essentially saying there is nothing to see here. Listen. Have you ever heard the president disparage u. S. Service members or veterans . Well, absolutely not. And i would be offended, too, if i thought it was true. I think this president has enormous respect for the military and for the generals. And ive been at the tank at the pentagon with him. Ive been at 9 11 at the pentagon with him. This president respects and supports the u. S. Military. Cnn has confirmed several aspects of the atlantics reporting, also using anonymous sources. Some other outlets have confirmed part of that story, too, including the new york times, the washington post, the associated press, and fox news. John, back to you. A lot of different organizations have confirmed big chunks of this story. And Jeffrey Goldberg is a terrific reporter, obviously, and has terrific sources, as well. Joe johns at the white house, thanks so much for being with us. Break overnight, californias governor has declared a state of emergency amidst the world wildfires on record in that state. The fires are burning as that state deals with recordbreaking heat, including the highest temperature ever recorded in los angeles county. Cnns kyung lah is live in yucaipa, california, which is one of the areas hardest hit. Kyung, what are you seeing this morning. Well, you can see this orange glow behind me, john. This is one of the fires that are burning right now here in california. This one, 7,000 plus acres. 600 personnel on that fire line, trying to put it out. And heres how it started. It started at a park when a family lit pyrotechnic as part of a gender reveal party, sparking this wildfire. Rare and deadly heat at more than 120 degrees. Bone dry winds exacerbating flames and almost 2. 1 million acres burned. Californias wildfires this year have become the worst in state history and it is only september. A rapidlyspreading fire tore through the Sierra National forest, trapping hundreds of people at a recreation area. And the situation only can be described as just hellish conditions out there for those four people. At least 224 were rescued after the creek fire blocked the only way out. Because of deteriorating weather conditions, they ended up using great and sound judgment by allowing as many people as they could possibly fit on the helicopter on the second turn. And safely evacuated all of those, and then wanted to make an attempt for a third turn to get the remaining personnel out. About 20 evacuees had injuries from broken bones to burns. Two were carried out on stretchers. Hiking nearby, Julianna Park says the fire moved in so fast, a forest ranger instructed them to drive through it. Holy just keep going. And it was actually per her instruction that we drove through that fire. She said it was the only way down and it hadnt yet crossed the road. And that we just had to drive through it. I think if we had stayed just ten minutes more, we might not have been so lucky. Reporter from friday night until sunday morning, the creek fire alone burned 45,000 acres, even with hundreds of firefighters and air drops, the fire remains at zero percent containment, out of control. Californias governor urged residents to conservative energy to avoid power surges and rolling blackouts. Gavin newsom tweeted steps asking californians to conserve energy. And this is all happening amid a pandemic. The cal guards support team set up a mobile clinic for covid19 tests, as rescuers try to work safely. Through the merciless challenges, californias rescuers remain positive and continue to push ahead. Wherever you have conditions that are in the three digits and theyre across so many different areas within our jurisdiction, within l. A. County fire, youre always going to be on edge a little bit. But this is something that we prepare for, something that we train for, and something that were ready for. And well handle that. And were still weeks away from the peak of wildfire season. Nast usually in october or november. John, if there is any good news out of all of this, it is that the weather at least here is expected to be slightly cooler, in the mid to upper 90s. Cooler in the mid to upper 90s. Is that what you just said, kyung. Reporter mmhmm, yes, absolutely. 100 . Thats cooler compared to yesterday. If thats not a sign of the times, i dont know what is, at this point. Kyung lau for us in yucaipa, california, for us. Thank you very much. Developing this morning, the wall street journal reports three vaccine makers will pledge not to seek government approval until the vaccine they produce is considered safe and effective. This as President Trump continues to pressure officials to approve a vaccine before election day. Joining us now, cnn political commentator, joe lockhart. Hes the former press secretary under president bill clinton. And dr. Peter hotez, the dean of the National School of tropical medicine at Baylor College of medicine in houston. And professor hotez, i think its fascinating that these Drug Companies feel the need to come forward and say, you know what, were not going to ask for approval until we think its safe. To me, it indicates that they see that theres this atmosphere of distrust, based on the president pushing so hard to get a vaccine ready before election day. Yeah, theyre actually being smart, john. They want this vaccine to work. And they want to people to trust their pharmaceutical company. So what theyre doing is a Smart Business practice, to make certain that theyre releasing a vaccine thats both safe and effective, because they know that if theres a mistake and if things dont go well, it could bring down the entire company. So theyre being smart about it. And the fact that were seeing the pharmaceutical companies sort of protecting the u. S. Population from the government is something ive never seen before. And just on the timeline, in terms of the timeline, youve got, you know, firsthand insight into how long it takes to get a vaccine ready. You think that this accelerated timeline is just unrealistic, based on the types of vaccines at play here, right . Thats absolutely right. I dont see a single way by which we could have vaccines released to the public before the election. Look, we know from the phase i, phase ii trials that you need at least two doses of these vaccines in order to induce an immune response that is likely to be protective. So just if you look at the logistics, the phase iii trials didnt really begin until the end of july, beginning of august. Zp and its going to take at least two months in order to fully immunize all of the human volunteers. And then you have to give it time to show that theres a difference between the placebo controls and the vaccinated groups and a time to evaluate safety. Thats why i dont see a single way in which you would have that information collected until the end of the year. And thats what dr. Fauci is saying. And probably beginning of next year, ive been saying the middle of next year, well have vaccines released to the public. And even then, thats going to be a world record. I think thats a much more realistic time frame. And remember, the other additional complexity, which is that this is a for the first two or three vaccines and operation warp speed, these are new technologies that have never been licensed to the public. So for that reason, you want that extra layer of belts and su suspenders to make sure that makes sense. Speak of that extra lawyer o belts and suspenders, as we look at this new polling from ugov. Whats fascinating the not just the percent of people who say they would take the vaccine immediately, which is only 21 if it was available this year, but the fact that if a vaccine was available this year, whether it would be seen as a Scientific Achievement or something that was rushed through. A significant number of americans, 65 , say they would see that as something that had been rushed through. Yes, there is a split there politically, as we can see. But you figure in the margin of error, which is 2. 4 points, joe, and when you look at that split even among republicans, its almost evenly split, which goes to show that a lot of the messaging theyre putting out there seems to be working in terms of americans not knowing who to trust on this vaccine. Yeah, listen, the president has made it political from day one. But i think hes fumbled the politics a little bit. I think americans mostly want to know that youre working on a problem. Not that youre going to solve it by a particular date. And this is actually a good story. I think as dr. Hotez says, this is a world record. You know, the president should get some credit for harnessing the Scientific Community to work so quickly. But what hes done is hes promised it by a certain date. And you cant do that with science and medicine. And he has set himself up. I think for failure, both because its very likely that he wont meet that promise. And secondly, hes undermined the publics confidence in vaccines writ large. So, listen, i just think from the beginning, particularly on the vaccines, hes gotten the politics all wrong. What happens . The election is november 3rd. What happens if november 1st he stages a News Conference like he did with convalescent plasma and says, okay, its here. Heres the vaccine. Does that immediately shift votes, im just not sure. Were 58 days away at this point. When would you have to make that announcement for it to have the impact you wanted it to . I think given the poll that erica cited that even if he announced it, it wouldnt shift a lot of votes. Remember, by october 30th, around 40 of the country will have already voted, which is, i think, one of the reasons hes making this promise. But i dont think theres again, this goes to the mismanaging the politics. Its been done in such an overt, blatant way that the public doesnt believe it. And i dont think at the end of the day, even if they make an announcement, it will be seen as political and so dangerous, the undecid undecided voters, i doubt it will sway them. Moving into labor day, we did hear more from the administration, even from the president , reminding people it was Labor Day Weekend. Not to go to crazy. When will we know the impact of our behaviors from this weekend . Well, we want to look at what happened over july 4th weekend, by the middle of june, we were pretty much at our nater in terms of new cases. And after july 4th, thats when things really started to rev up and accelerate to the point where we went up to 65, 70,000 new cases a day. Now were back down to 40,000 cases. So unfortunately, were already at a much higher level than we were in the weeks before the july 4th holiday. So i dont think it will take much to really bring us back up to 70,000 new case days. So im worried about the july 4th holiday. Im also worried about some of these forced k12 School Openings in areas where theres a lot of transmission. Thats going to pile on to the problem. And you have the College Openings in areas where theres a lot of transmission. So its not going to take much to bring us back up to that terrible level where we were earlier in the summer, where we have 70,000 new cases a day. And fufunfortunately, im afrai thats where were probably headed. 40,000 cases a day isnt a great place to be, either. No, its still a screaming high level for transmission, and thats why the institute for Health Metrics have projected that horrible, horrible number of 400 deaths by january 1. That is a real possibility. And this is the greatest Public Health catastrophe thats happened to the United States in the last hundred years. Theres also a real possibility that we could make changes that would not get us to that level of more than 400,000 deaths by the end of the year. Dr. Peter hotez, jill lockhart, thank you. This morning, new details about a tellall book from President Trumps former attorney, Michael Cohen. In the book, cohen portrays trump as racist and corrupt, quoting him as saying, i will never get the hispanic vote. Like the blacks, theyre too stupid to vote for trump. Theyre not my people. Joe lockhart is back with us, along with cnn political analyst, margaret talev, politics and white house editor for axios. As we look at all of this, there are the stories, the allegations in the Michael Cohen book. Theres the reporting from the atlantic, much of which cnn has matched along with other news outlets over the last couple of days. Different topics, margaret, but as you point out, theres a Common Thread here that were seeing. Erica, the Common Thread is that these are people who the president has chosen to put close to him, who are feeling the need to speak out before the election and have really negative things to say about him. These are not just different topics, but in one case, Michael Cohen is going on the record about these allegations and the others, these are folks who are not putting their names, at least at this point, to a lot of the criticisms about the president s statements about the military. But these are all people who the president has given very close access to and who have worked behind the scenes with him for years. And i think what were seeing is the president seeks to discredit these people, of course, well see the white house and the president s aides discredit Michael Cohen. But he chose to give them that access and put them close to him and these are just not the sort of accusations that weve heard about certainly the past couple of president s who were close to him. If he continues to discredit everyone who was close to him, theres not going to be anyone left in america, because it seems like everyone has a story who has worked for him. The Republican National convention for four nights had people come out to say donald trump is not a racist. But it just seems that the more information that comes out, and his own public statements, mind you, undercuts that argument. The book by Michael Cohen, hes got this remarkable story, this is p 103 here, statements the president made. He said, quote, tell me one country run by a black person that isnt an shole. Theyre all complete fing toilets. How much does this undo whatever efforts he made during the convention . I think broadly, the republicans did a lot of good for the president the first three and a half nights. And i think he undid a lot of that with his speech. But going back over history, theres no theres no doubt that the president has a problem on race. Everything from the central park five to the birther movement. And this is really important as you look at the election. Most of the people in this country have made up their mind. And the real fight is over, sort of, a small group of undecided and trump trying to eat into black and hispanic votes. You know, in 2012, mitt romney got Something Like 28 of the hispanic vote. If he had just gotten john mccains 35 , he would be president. Barack obama would have been a oneterm president. So this stuff matters. And on the Michael Cohen book, i think the hispanic line is the much more important. Trump is still polling at about 24, 25 among hispanics, so i really expect the Biden Campaign to hit that going forward, because if they can shave points off there, thats a big problem for trump. It is interesting, margaret, when you look at what is being put out there and how the Biden Campaign is choosing to respond. One of the things that were learning from Michael Cohen, we have this picture of this person who was hired to play the role of former president barack obama, opposite donald trump, who apparently, in this recorded video, spent time berating the faux obama, and then finishing off by firing him. Its fascinating, margaret, and its so sad, at the same time, that this would be a focus, that a grown man would hire an actor, so they could i dont know, fulfill a fantasy of firing them. I mean, i wonder, margaret, if this will still have an impact, though, sadly, given where we are at this point. I do think, as joe mentioned, a big part of President Trumps political strategy when it comes to the africanamerican vote is about telling white voters in the suburbs that its okay to stick with him if they voted for him in 2016. And it is about it has been until now about trying to depress black turnout for joe biden. What were seeing the Biden Campaign doing now, at this exact moment, is seeming to focus on that white collegeeducated, particularly male vote. And were seeing it in terms, in particular, how theyre turning to the military, given these revelations and accusations and others in Jeff Goldbergs reporting. Were seeing the Biden Campaign turn very hard to targeting 50mile radiuses in wing states. North carolina, california, both with this military message. And i think well see some of these other messages come out, as well. The military vote is a really interesting vote. It has softened for President Trump over the time of his presidency, according to the most recent military times polling. Hes underwater in terms of favorability. Biden appears to have a slight edge. Theres a huge portion of that military vote, one out of four military voters who says that they either want a Third Party Candidate or is just not going to bother voting at all, and thats a really important vote for both of these nominees to try to capture. I think what youre doing is make the case that the faux obama picture is a picture, is a distraction. Its sad, its weird. Oh, its a shocking revelation. Its a shocking allegation. Yeah, this photo is just bizarre, right, and its makebelieve, and you think the president plays d d or Something Like this. Its just strange. However, the military thing, it seems to me, has a real impact. Its at this bigger level, shakes the core or what could be or should be a core of the president s support. And it has resonance, joe. Because everyone heard the president call john mccain a loser. Everyone did. Everyone knows you have jim mattis and all these other generals who serve with the president , who left with a sour beyond a sour taste in their mouth. And you know there are these other people out here who could, and maybe will come forward over the next 58 days. And again, in a very close election, youre looking for these movements of niche groups. Whether it be active duty military, whether it be bigger groups like blacks or hispanics, and i was struck by looking at florida. And in florida in 2018, trump won active military personnel by over 25 points. Hes now up by four points. Thats the kind of shift that a close election decides, whether he wins florida or not. And i think margaret points out something important. Theres still a lot of very conservative active duty and veterans who are having some trouble getting their heads around voting for joe biden, but there isnt really a third party alternative this time. So you may find, you know, that they stay home and by staying home, that is de facto a vote for joe biden. Joe lockhart, margaret talev, thank you all very much for being with us this morning. The topranked player in mens tennis out of the u. S. Open after accidentally hitting a line judge with a ball. Andy scholes has more in the bleacher report. Hey, this was something. It certainly was, john. Novak djokovic, he was the overwhelming favorite to win this year at flushing meadows, but his frustrations getting the better of him. And now novak will have to wait to win that 18th grand slam title. Ill show you what happened. It was in the first set of his match, after losing a service game, djokovic frustrated, firing a ball with his rack et, hit a line judge right in the neck. Djokovic immediately showed remorse, went over to see if she was okay. She was able to walk off the court. Djokovic then speaking with officials and he was told he was disqualified from the tournament. Djokovic then left without speaking with reporters, but did give a lengthy apology on instagram saying this whole situation has left me really sad and empty. I checked on the lines person and the tournament told me that thank god, she is feeling okay. Im extremely sorry to have caused her so such stress, so unintended, so wrong. Uh i went on to say, i need to go back and work on my disappointment and and work on my growth as a player and human being. I apologize to the u. S. Open tournament and everyone associated for my behavior. The usta says that djokovic will lose all ranking points and the 250,000 in prize money hed earned at the tournament. He could also receive a fine, john. And you know, no federer this year, no rafael nadal this year. This certainly was djokovics tournament to win. You know, he trails federer, who has 20 grand slams. Nadals got 19, djokovic at 17. This could go down as one of the biggest disappointments in his life and in his career if he doesnt end up passing those guys. I had not seen the apology until just now. Thats a hell of an apology for Novak Djokovic. He didnt try to weasel out of it. Clearly, it was a mistake, but on the other hand, he lost control of his emotions. And when you see the video, which is hard to find, because theres only that one angle, its awful. Its awful. It goes right yeah, and you know, its a little unlucky, too, because 6 inches to the right, 6 inches to the left, and djokovic probably still playing in the u. S. Open. But it just shows, you need to control your emotions, you need to be better than that moment. And djokovic knows it. You see that apology from him and he knows that what he did was wrong and he wasnt, at least insofar as as that apology goes, arguing with the u. S. Hope that he should have been allowed to stay. Yeah. Wow. What do you think . I was actually really impressed with the apology. Im a big tennis fan, as you know, and i think he actually handled himself in that moment well. And i think thats an example, right . We see so many apologies that are not an apology. Its, im sorry if i offended you. Im sorry if you feel bad about it, but i dont feel bad about it. She sat down with our dana bash for an exclusive interview, discussing the criminal justice system, russian interference in the election, and the race for a Coronavirus Vaccine. Reporter what if a vaccine really is approved before the election . Would Kamala Harris trust Donald Trumps word that its safe and effective . I would not trust his word. I would trust the word of public Health Experts and scientists, but not donald trump. But do you trust that in the situation where were in now, that the public Health Experts and the scientists will get the last word on the efficacy of a vaccine. If past is prologue, that they will not. Theyll be muzzled. Theyll be suppressed. They will be sidelined, because hes looking at an election coming up in less than 60 days, and hes grasping, for whatever he can get to pretend that he has been a leader on this issue, when he has not. Would a Biden Harris Administration support a federal mask mandate . So its about a national standard. Everyone should wear a mask. And heres the thing about this. None of us likes wearing a mask. Nobody likes to wear a mask. But theres a difference between standard but its about sacrifice. Theres a difference between a standard and a mandate. Would bit a federal mandate under the Biden Harris Administration . It would be a standard. Listen, this is not about, like, in terms of the priorities of joe biden and myself, this is not about punishment. Its not about big brother. How do you enforce a standard . Especially, when as you know, there are governors who are in, you know who just dont agree with that and theyre not mandating it on the more local level . How do you enforce that . I think part of the issue here is that we have a president of the United States that made this a partisan issue and made ate political issue. Reporter as former District Attorney of San Francisco and California Attorney general, harris has a long history on criminal justice issues. In a 2009 book, she wrote, if asked if more police should be on the streets, her hand would, quote, shoot up. Would your hand still shoot up if someone asked if you would want more Police Officers on your streets . What i say now is what i would say then, if a woman is raped, a child molested or one human being murders another human being, that there will be a Police Officer that responds to that case and that there will be accountability and consequence for the offender, yes. I think that donald trump and bill barr are spending fulltime in a different reality. The reality of America Today is what we have seen over generations and frankly, since our inception, which is, we do have to systems two of justice in america. Reporter russian interference on behalf of donald trump is also a big concern for the democratic Vice President ial candidate. The department of Homeland Security bulletin said that russia is trying to amplify claims that mailin voting will lead to widespread voting fraud and undermine the Publics Trust in the upcoming election. Are you worried that russian interference could cost you the election . I am clear that russia interfered in the election of the president of the United States in 2016. I serve on the Senate Intelligence committee. We have published detailed reports about exactly what we believe happened. And i do believe that there will be foreign interference in the 2020 election. And that russia will be at the front of the line. Could it cost you the white house . Theoretically, of course. Yes. Reporter dana bash, cnn, washington. Our thanks to dana for that terrific interview. So tonight we have a new cnn special report. It examines the key moments in President Trumps tenure, including his first critical address to the nation about coronavirus. Developing this morning, Northeastern University dismissing 11 first year students and refusing to refund the nearly 37,000 in tuition after those students violated the schools coronavirus policies. Early start anchor Laura Jarrett joins us now with the details. Boy, thats a call you dont want to make home to your parents. Its one of the more serious punishments weve seen so far as schools across the country are struggling to control partying on college campuses. Northeastern University Says that staff found a group of students hanging out together in their westin hotel dorm rooms. 11 of those students have now been kicked out of school for the fall semester and as you mentioned, the school is keeping their tuition money. So were keeping an eye out to see if other schools do the same for similar infractions. This has really become a big issue all over. And the money really makes you sit up and pay attention. Northeastern isnt the only school thats dealing with these issues. And there are a lot of areas that experts are now focusing on as coronavirus hot spots, because there are more kids going back to college. The rate of infections has actually been trending downward in the northeast, where Northeastern University is. But in iowa and other places in the midwest, folks are really still in a bad spot. In iowa in particular, College Students seem to be a driving force of these covid clusters, if you will. In johnson county, where the university of iowa is located, cases have more than doubled since the start of august, climbing now to more than 4,000. And despite these surges in cases, there actually hasnt been a corresponding uptick in deaths in these college communities, which is of course a good thing. But the worry is that young people will still spread the virus throughout the larger community, potential a dangerous Ripple Effect of having students back on campus, erica. Yeah. I think were going to keep talking about this for a while, laura. Thank you. Sure. Concerns about politics interfering with a potential Coronavirus Vaccine. New day continues right now. Health experts say covid19 cases could surge after dlalabo day. We saw a surge after memorial day. We saw a surge after the fourth of july. So if thats any indication, were going to see something similar. We use labor day as a way to take the day off, but unfortunately, the virus doesnt. Record heat and raging wildfires. More than 2 million acres have burned this year, the most ever. The intensity of the heat is just crazy. No rainfall, dry conditions. That is just fuel to ignite more fires. This is new day, with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. All right, good morning, everyone. Welcome to this special labor day edition of new day. Alisyn camerota is off. Erica hill with me. I won the erica hill jackpot. I think i won the john berman jackpot, except youre making me wear real shoes now and i miss my sneakers. The worst thing about being in the studio is i have to wear suit pants. Maybe you should bring back jeans and jackets. Im all for that. Or khakis. Doublepleated. Okay, john, were going to have to have a talk. It is laush day weekend, a holiday weekend, which is fun, but Health Experts have looked at these holiday weekends as big flashing danger signs. Memorial day, fourth of july, we saw the virus accelerate as people gathered. And we are starting to see some pictures of what people are doing this holiday weekend. We saw San Francisco, people crowded into this party here. That is not something that dr. Anthony fauci wants to see, i guarantee it, which is what has people concerned. So thousands of cases in all 50 states are also now linked to the reopening of colleges and universities. And meantime, theres new reporting about President Trump putting pressure on Health Officials for a Coronavirus Vaccine before election day. And now the wall street journal is reporting at least three of the companies who are working to develop a vaccine are joining together in an unusual pledge. Theyre promising not to seek approval until the vaccines has been proven safe and effective. Also this morning, extrump attorney Michael Cohen hitting his former boss hard in his new book. And the latest on the reporting, detailing the president s alleged comments, disparaging American Service members, including those killed in battle. Lets begin with cnns rosa flores, whos in miami beach, florida, on concerns of a potential new holiday spike in the weeks to come. Rosa, good morning. Erica, good morning. Labor Day Celebrations have been in full swing all weekend long and theyre expected to continue today. And experts are concerned that this could lead to a spike in coronavirus cases, just like the one that we saw after memorial day weekend, and also the fourth of july, but now theres an added complication. Students are also returning
