Americans have died, more than were killed on 9 11. But those tragic numbers were overlooked at the Republican Convention last night, and social distancing rules were also overlooked last night. 1,000 people packed tightly on to the south lawn of the white house. Very few, as you can see, were wearing masks. A senior white house officials tells cnn everybody is going to get this thing eventually. Really . They actually said, everybody is going to get this thing eventually . That is the white house explanation . Everyone is going to catch it. Might as well be at the white house, the taxpayerfunded seat of the executive branch. And about that, for the first time in history, the white house served as a convention backdrop. This shatters all precedent, a political rally at the white house. Which by cnns count, included at least 20 lice es or misleadi claims. The goal of the convention was crystal clear, to smooth some of the president s edges, make him acceptable to some voters. But more than anything, to make this a socalled choice election. In the hospital just a referendum on his presidency, but a choice between trump and joe biden. The president mentioned biden by name 41 times. It was really, in many ways, his speech about joe biden, trying to create fear and division. Now, one photo from the conclusion of it really captures the dichotomy of this all. You can see the fireworks there. By the way, late at night. If youre a washington resident, how psyched are you for fireworks at 11 45 on a work knight. Fireworks there with protesters highlighting the impact of the pandemic on americans. Lets begin at the white house with cnns jeff zeleny. The president asking for four more years. Sometimes it felt like the speech would last that full time. This was a very long speech, jeff. Reporter good morning, john. It was a long speech and you could certainly hear those fireworks across town, i can tell you. But President Trump did begin the general Election Campaign right here on the ground grounds of the peoples house. He misrepresented his record repeatedly, particularly on coronavirus, but he did offer a stark frame of the general election ahead. He said, without evidence, that no one is safe in joe bidens america. President trump formally accepted his partys renomination, turning the White House South Lawn into a fullblown trump rally. I profoundly accept this nomination for president of the United States. Reporter on the final night of the Republican Convention, the president spoke before more than 1,500 supporters, with few masks and no social distancing. This after months of the Trump Administrations own Health Experts urging people to avoid large gatherings, to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Trump praised and misrepresented his handling of the crisis. While the u. S. Continues to face a high human cost from the pandemic. We are meeting this challenge. We are delivering lifesaving therapies and well produce a vaccine before the end of the year or maybe even sooner. Reporter he also warned that a joe bidenled response would cripple the economy. Instead of following the science, joe biden wants to inflict a painful shutdown on the entire country. Joe bidens plan is not a solution to the virus, but rather, its a surrender to the virus. My administration has a very different approach, to save as many lives as possible, we are focusing on the science, the facts, and the data. Reporter yet biden has only said he would shut down the country if scientists recommend it. I would be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives. Because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus. Reporter as the president s daughter, ivanka trump, tried to soften his image. I recognize that my dads Communication Style is not to everyones taste. Reporter people gathered outside the white house to protest Racial Injustice. Trump did not mention jacob blake, who was shot by police in kenosha, wisconsin, earlier this week. Or two of the people allegedly killed by a 17yearold during protests. But he did warn a biden presidency would lead to an attack on public safety. We must never allow mob rule. We can never allow mob rule. Not strongest possible terms, the Republican Party condemns the rioting, arson, and looting we have seen in democratrun cities, all, like kenosha, minneapolis, portland, chicago, and new york and many others. Democrat run. Reporter it was one of many blistering attacks upon biden, a moderate democrat, whose record trump repeatedly mischaracterized as radical. Biden is a trojan horse for socialism. Reporter ahead of a fireworks celebration, trump told voters, novembers election could have historic consequences. At in time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas. This election will decide whether we save the American Dream or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny. Reporter now, the president came into this Republican National convention trying to reset his candidacy. Even some Top Democrats tell me overnight there are signs he may have done that, through his message of law and order. So look for a response from the Biden Campaign later today. But the campaign is beginning now in earnest. There are 67 days until the general election, no question. But it starts sooner than that. Next friday, a week from today, the ballots start going out in north carolina. It unfolds from there throughout this month of september and october. So for the president s part, hes flying to New Hampshire later today. He lost that state by only 3,000 votes in 2016. As hes away, theres a protest here in washington, the 57th anniversary of the march on washington. No question now, john, this race is finally joined. Jeff zeleny, thanks so much for being with us this morning, laying out what we all saw last night. This morning, the 17yearold charged with killing two protesters in kenosha, wisconsin, will appear in court for the first time. He now faces six charges. Meanwhile, jacob blakes family tells cnn that hes handcuffed to his hospital bed despite being paralyzed. Cnns Shimon Prokupecz is outside the courthouse with the very latest. And now Kyle Rittenhouse, his cause being joined, kind of a cause celebre in some circles, shimon. Reporter yeah, certainly that is the case, john. And on the jacob blake case, its been five days since he was shot by police and we are still getting very Little Information from officials and investigators on his case. But we have learned new details on that 17yearold gunman who is now accused of killing two people. Jacob blakes family says he is lying in his hospital bed, handcuffed after officer Rusten Shesky shot him in the back seven times. Jacob blakes father says he was glad to see his son awake, but that his sons first question or first words to him were, daddy, why did they shoot me so many times . He said, why is my son chained up . And theres obviously no reasonable explanation for why someone who is paralyzed from the waist down would have handcuffs on. Reporter wisconsins governor tony ever says he doesnt know why either. Hes paid a horrific price already, being shot seven or eight times in the back, so i cant imagine why thats happening. Reporter still very few answers from authorities. Officials choosing not to take questions after saying very little in a press conference. Chief reporter meanwhile, more charges have been filed against 17yearold Kyle Rittenhouse, who is accused of fatally shooting two people and seriously injuring another. Along with firstdegree intentional homicide and reckless homicide, rittenhouse faces three additional felony charges, plus a misdemeanor charge of possession of a dangerous weapon while under the age of 18. If convicted, rittenhouse could face life in prison. These armed men who have no connection to even the state. That guy is from my town. Think about how ridiculous that is. Who was he accountable to . Nobody. And for him to even be able to shoot somebody and still walk away from the scene, you know, they talked about finding a knife inside of the car, not even on jacob blakes person, but this guy is carrying around a long gun, kills somebody, just walking freely, was able to get back home to illinois, weve got a much bigger problem on our hands. Reporter the two victims from tuesdays shooting are 36yearold Joseph Rosenbaum and 26yearold anthony huber. Hubers great aunt tells the new york times, anthony knew jacob blake. His girlfriend, hanna, on why huber charged the gunman. I will not let him to have died for nothing. People are going to know exactly why we were out there and fighting for. He was going to protect me and protect everybody around him. Reporter and Kyle Rittenhouse is due in court here behind me later this morning. He will appear via zoom, because of the coronavirus, the courtroom behind us is closed. He is this is an extradition hearing. He, at some point, will be brought back to kenosha, where hes going to face charges, and eventually, perhaps, a trial. Alisyn . Shimon, thank you very much for that update. So the nba playoffs could resume as early as today, after a twoday boycott that disrupts all professional sports in the u. S. Andy scholes has more now. So games in Major League Baseball, the nhl, nba, wnba, all again called off on thursday as athletes across the country continue to protest Racial Injustice and police brutality. And there was a very powerful moment at citi field in new york city last night. The mets and marlins taking the field. And before the first pitch, all players coming out of the dugout. They then held a 42second moment of silence in tribute to Jackie Robinson. Haas the number he wore on his jersey. And today the league will celebrate Jackie Robinson day. Everyone then left the field, leaving only a black lives matter shirt at home plate. This is unprecedented and, you know, i think its for the good of, you know, Inspiring Change and making the world a better place, we hope. So i think theres a lot of work to be done, but, you know, at least what people dont understand, like, this is way bigger than baseball. You know, this is life, this is humanity. Reporter in all, a total of seven Major League Baseball games were postponed on thursday in a show of solidarity. In the meantime, wnba players locking arms in a show of unity in their florida bubble, as three more games were postponed for the second day in a row. L. A. Sparks star telling espn, this is not a strike, this is not a boycott, this is a day of reflection, a day of informed action and mobilization. The players say theyre planning to play today. The National Hockey league, meanwhile, which came under fire from some of its players for continuing to play, made the decision yesterday to postpone playoff games scheduled for last night and tonight. They will resume play tomorrow. The nba players, meanwhile, have reportedly made the decision to continue the playoffs. Three more games were called off last night. The league said they hoped to resume tonight or tomorrow. The players continue to meet with officials to formulate a plan of action to further address Racial Injustice issues. Michael jordan, who serves as the leagues Labor RelationsCommittee Chairman and the only black majority owner in the league is a big part of those talks. So we should hear more from the nba today on when they plan to resume the playoffs and what changes will be made. Okay. Keep us posted, andy. Thank you very much. This morning, the coronavirus death toll in the United States is nearing 181,000 people. The cdc projects that number will grow to more than 2,000 00 in just the next three weeks. But President Trumps speech last night packed more than 1,000 supporters together, most without masks or any social distancing. Or the president s conventions acceptance speech. A senior white house official explained the lack of protocols by telling cnn, quote, everyones going to catch this thing eventually. Joining me now, s. E. Cupp, john avlon, and dr. Ali khan. Hes the dean of the university of Nebraska Medical Centers college of public health. Great to see all of you this morning. Dr. Khan, im sure, as a doctor, when you see that scene, it makes your head want to explode. But i think that philosophically speaking, this is part and parcel of the president s, youll remember, he promised a big plan that was going to be unveiled. This was weeks ago, and we have never heard it. And so hearing his Senior Adviser say, well, everybodys going to get it eventually, its that sort of fatalism, i think, that weve heard before. That sort of, not being proactive, theres nothing we can do, were sort of helpless, so lets just all take off our masks. Absolutely. And so, yes, it is disturbing to see a mass kbagathering event, people without masks or social distancing. At this point, we know this causes infection in other peoples. The Sturgis Rally is the most recent example. But the biggest example is the strategy. This is the spoken strategy weve discussed multiple times. Theres a herd immunity strategy in the United States that says people are going to get infected. Well let them get infected and wait for the vaccine. Well, unfortunately, because of this mistake that was made back in january, we see a thousand deaths a day. And we cant afford a thousand deaths a day, until the vaccine. We need to adopt a control and containment strategy in the United States. I will note that the new cdc forecast from three weeks from now is that 200,000 deaths, which is an average of about 900 deaths a day, which is still extraordinarily high. It came out while the president was speaking last night at the convention, and it was really extraordinary to see. The administration itself admitting well lose 900 people a day, while the president was claiming some level of success. One of the things i want to do is read you the masking guidelines for the city of washington, d. C. , which again, i know theyre not subject to at the white house. But it says, persons leaving their residences shall wear a mask when theyre likely to come in contact with another person, such as being within 6 feet of another person for a fleeting time. The 70minute speech the president gave last night was more than a fleeting time and they werent 6 feet apart, they were sitting next to each other. But clearly, it was the image the white house wanted. This was deliberate. Yeah, i think, and ive used this before, the classic George Costanza line. Its not a lie if you believe it. I think what the white house was trying to do and the rnc was trying to do was say, look, we believe that covids gone and we did a great job handling it. We want you to believe that, too. And so, covidfest, the maskless, you know, display of idiocy last night was to sell that idea. And whats interesting and alarming to me, in addition to the health ramifications, is that you could make an argument if you were President Trump, that covids not gone, its not completely handled, but a disruption in administrations at a crucial time would be a bad idea. Now, thats not a salable argument to me, but its more salable, i think, to more people than covid byebye. We got this thing. John, do you see this as exhibit a of their philosophy or their plan . The stagecraft speaks to their strategy and what they believe in. I think s. E. Is right. This is the Trump White House trying to say, everythings fine. Nothing to see here. Were moving forward. You saw donald trump try to sort of put lipstick on a pig last night with regard to the Trump Administrations response to covid. Talking about being heroic, talking about all the things theyve done. And of course, entirely glossing over the fact that his personal denial at the top of this pandemic is one of the things thats created that terrible statistic from john hopkins. Weve got 4 of the worlds population, but 22 of the worlds deaths. Thats a sign of failure. Not a stunning success. One of the things the president said, clearly misspeaking, one of the several times he misspoke, he said, were pioneering the death rate. I noticed that, too. And daniel dale couldnt fact check that, because its true. The United States is a pioneer in terms of the number of People Killed by this virus. We lead the world in the number of deaths and cases. Dr. Khan, another thing which i do think now we can clearly state is a strategy, a campaign strategy, is to lean into what the president wants us to believe is the eventuality of a vaccine, coming soon. He said well have one by the end of the year. Maybe even sooner. What do you think of that message . So im very optimistic that the significant investments are going to lead to a vaccine by the end of the year or early spring. But thats still a thousand deaths a day, while we wait for this vaccine. And john, weve talked about this. I like the word preventable deaths. Every time we talk about these tragic deaths, each and every one is preventable. And you dont need to be a math wizard to add 20 days times 1,000 people to say, yeah, well get to 200,000 people dead in the next 20 days. Remembering that thats an underestimate by at least a quarter of what the true deaths are in the United States. But s. E. , if they do have a vaccine, god willing, by the end of the year, its not for us. Its not for regular people. Its for the Front Line Health Care workers. So pretending, in your speech to america, that its going to be wildly available, that is not true. No company has ever said that. Its not true. Not until somewhere in the spring. Go ahead, s. E. Its not true. And it will cost lives, because people will act, psychologically, there have been studies, people will act more reckless as they believe they are getting closer to an end point. And while you saw that recklessness among our leadership last night, that will trickle down. And so there are in addition to just messaging a messaging bad look, there are real implications for pretending that this will all be over soon. Gosh, i hope it will be. But we are, by all accounts, a ways away from having a vaccine that is readily available to the masses. We need to act like it. John avlon, i left this view, because you will like the rhetorical flourish here. The president , as youve often noted, often takes charges against him and says, i know you are, but what am i . And he did it very much with coronavirus and joe biden. I want you to listen to what biden said and then what the president said. And it seems like our wartime president has surrendered, waved the white flag and left the battle field. Joe bidens plan is not a solution to the virus, but rather its a surrender to the virus. Yeah, there you go. Pitch perfect. Pitch perfect project and deflect. But we saw that consistently in the speech last night. Not just that line, but you saw the president slamming china for the outbreak of the virus originally in wuhan. And talking about how tough hed been when we all know, initially, he praised chinas response. And biden was outfront in saying, we need to take this thing seriously, when the president was primarily worrying about its impact to the economy. We reap what we sow. We all hope theres a vaccine as soon as possible. But we see this administration meddling in science skbrurand undercutting science. Mask on, dr. Khan. Its on hes on thats a nice one. All right. Thank you very much. President trump hammering his law and order rhetoric, accusing joe biden and democrats of supporting the lawlessness that were seeing on his watch. So is that effective . We discuss it, next. From prom dresses. To soccer practices. And new adventures. You hope the more you give the less theyll miss. But even if your teen was vaccinated against meningitis in the past. Xfinity x1 just got even better, with peacock premium included at no additional cost. No strings attached. Crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon, and i mean, very soon, come to an end. There is violence and danger in the streets of many democratrun cities throughout america. No one will be safe in bidens america. So what was interesting about that is that was President Trump back in 2016 with a Campaign Promise and then last night, which seemed to be some kind of a tacit admission that the law and order he promised in 2016 wasnt exactly delivered. And he tried to pin that on joe biden, who responded on cnn. If you think about it, donald trump saying, youre not going to be safe in joe bidens america, all the video being played is being played in Donald Trumps america. These guys are rooting for violence. Thats what its all about. To prove that you should be scared. You think hes actually rooting for violence. That he wants violence, because it allows him to claim a law and order mantle . Sure. And because it takes everybodys eye off the ball. Want to talk about safety . Look at the biggest safety issue in the nation. Covid. Back with us now, s. E. Cupp and john avlon. The conventions are now over. Look, theyre done. And now win, i think, to a cert extent, its time to look forward and see if anything has changed. S. E. , i think it is so clear what the republicans tried to do, in some ways, in a very deliberate, meticulous way, to not make it a referendum on Donald Trumps presidency. To make it a choice between trump and biden. And that choice, according to donald trump, is fear and violence. Biden is equivalent to that. So my question to you is how effective was it . What has changed in this race, what does it mean Going Forward . I think its really interesting. Joe biden is right. The trump rnc was basically, forget covid, but look at violence. And i think you could fairly say that over at the dnc, it was forget the violence, but look at covid. So theyre kind of both playing a game of distraction. And both are probably effective for their bases. The question is, was trumps rnc effective at expanding his base at all . And i think the answer might be yes. You and i, you know, follow politics obsessively. But pretend you have a life, right . Pretend you dont i dont. But pretend we had a life. And were less obsessed about trumps tweets and cataloging all the failures that we do, which is important to do, pretend you really just cared about maybe your job, and you know that violence is up in the city next to you, because actually, you know, Violent Crime is up in 50 of the top major cities in the country. It doesnt all have to be true that you will be less safe in joe bidens america. It just has to feel like it. Especially if youre an impressionable voter that isnt following the nuances. If all you know is one side is saying, defund the police, and the other is saying, defend the police, that might be a compelling message, even if it isnt based entirely on facts. And john, i think that one example of the message possibly working or at least getting under the skin of the Biden Campaign is that the Biden Campaign announced that he will be hitting the campaign trail. So first, they had said, no, we can do this all remotely, as we have been doing for the past weeks. Thats the safest way, were following doctors orders. And now they are saying that they believe they are going to have to campaign and go to some swing states in person. So, doesnt that tell us that they do think that the rnc has been effective . Im not sure it says that, but i think it does say that the Biden Campaign realizes youve got to get out there on the campaign trail. We are heading into the phlox. And in politics as in sports, the best defense is a good offense and the biden team has been able to avoid that for a little bit with covid. But its game time, people. I think the macro point is that this was a contradiction convention. Because everything that was so scripted and produced was designed to broaden Donald Trumps appeal. It was an inclusive, diverse folks on the stage. You know, the opening video last night saying, americas great when it is good, not necessarily a slogan you think of when you think of. But it doesnt match the record. And then donald trump came in and basically said, this american carnage has continued, four more years for me. Its a tough line to walk, but such a stark contradiction between the carefully scripted message of this campaign to reach out to those remaining undecideds and independents and what donald trump delivered, which is fearmongering, because thats his favorite card to play. S. E. , did i hear something from you . No, i just think, i was agreeing with my friend, john avlon. Which im want to do. But i think, absolutely, the rnc was sort of built on a bunch of lies and mistruths and very generously exaggerations about the pretty picture that the Trump Administration wants to paint. Again, my only point is, if youre not following politics as religiously as we are, i think you might be compelled by some of the broad messages that you heard at the rnc. I have two tiny points. Go ahead. Ill give it to you. First, this is a tiny point to john. Ive never seen a Republican Convention with so many africanamericans speaking out. But you did so the numbers here. What did you find . Just for the folks who had slotted roles speaking from the stage. There were 12 africanamericans speaking over the course of the convention. Contrast that with the number of africanamericans serving with senior positions in trumps white house. One, senior africanamerican members of his cabinet, one, ben carson. And u. S. Attorneys, hes appointed two u. S. Attorneys of africanamerican decent. Thats a threetoone gap between what hes done and what the campaign tried to represent. And thats pretty stark. But thats the gap between the record and the rhetoric weve heard. It does go to show, the convention was very specifically designed to present a different image. My other go ahead. I do think if youre on social media and you hang out with the people, s. E. , like us, who i think you just called losers. Its fair. Tough, but fair. There are a lot of people talking about how effective the Republican Convention is on hitting their marks and maybe it is a turning point. I dont know. But i will know that the viewership is lower, and in some cases, significantly lower than last weeks democratic convention. So at least on some of the numbers, the idea that its generating some giant Campaign Reformation might not add up. Thats true. Im not sure what the correlation between viewership and voter is, to be honest, and why youre tuning in. Are you tuning into the dnc because youre a fan or tuning into the rnc because you would like to hear more . Im not really sure, but certainly, trump has to be disappointed that the democrats can claim a ratings win, something hes very partial to himself. S. E. , john, great to see you guys. You guys can go back to your socalled lives. No lives. No life. Thank you, guys. Take care. This morning, the full scope of hurricane lauras destruction. Those with a voice trying to help those who are voiceless. Men skbem from these communities realizing the magnitude of the problem as another unarmed black man is shot by the police. The summer of the pandemic and peaceful protests continues and what we saw was something weve never seen before. American sports shut down by athletes who want to do good, who want to take action. Thats what the wnba and nba said. This isnt about yelling and screaming, this is about calling on the police to arrest the men who killed the officers who killed breonna taylor. They have a plan of action and theyre doing something. Its right out of the playbook of 1968, except its with the olympics. Except its bigger. It has, i think, more of an impact and i think history will judge them very, very well. And so, taylor, on those points, practically speaking, what did it achieve . Was it effective . Yeah, you know, i think that right now, just to echo everything christine is saying, they want to use their voice for change. There has been joint calls between players and owners to figure out the exact way to do that. There was one yesterday and one of the main things they brought up was being able to utilize more grassroots sorts of organizations and give them fulltime jobs within the league so there is a dedicated coalition, whose entire job with the nba is to figure out, how can we change the lives and Progress Black people in this country. And those who have been disenfranchised and also just the victims of racism that has been so prevalent throughout the United States. But its all about making a plan right now, figuring out how they can work together, so i think what we know for sure is that this first step has been effe effective so far. We are talking about it, we are raising awareness about it. Players are having meetings constantly about what they can do next. So we have the symbol. Now its about how they can create that action. Would it have been helpful for them to do it longer than two days, christine . Since what youre talking about is the arrest of people responsible the officers responsible for Breonna Taylors death. That we havent seen any action. Should they have extended this boycott . You know, alisyn, taylors points are excellent and her reporting has been great on this. And i have to say that i think this is the right amount of time. What we could have seen. Lets just say they didnt play. Lets say they shut down the nba or the wnba season. We saw, of course, the powerful moment in Major League Baseball and other places. Lets say it all shut down. Well, these players have a platform that is so special and so unique to them. They get this opportunity to play sports and have our attention and the nation and the worlds attention. If you dont ballet your games, i wonder how long it would be before we, with our attention expanse so short, before we just move on. I think that would have been the risk. If they would have gone into their communities and started working on Voter Registration skbo and working with the police and the community, maybe. But even then, you lose the cache of being an athlete and you are now back in your community. I think they have a much bigger platform. I think they have played this exactly right. And when i say play, i dont mean it as some kind of game. And i think the idea to keep playing now evaluates their voices in a way that not playing, i think, would diminish their voices over time. Taylor, President Trump and Vice President pence, at least his advisers, both of their advisers, dismissed this action. They said it was silly, absurd, so let me play a little bit for you about how they reacted while this was happening. Theyve become like a Political Organization. And thats not a good thing. I dont think thats a good thing for sports or for the country. I think that the nba players are very fortunate that they have the financial position, where theyre able to take a night off from work. In my mind, its absurd and silly. What the fallout, would you say, taylor, from that . I mean, its no secret that the words that President Trump has used when talking about athletes in these situations is very prevalent, right . Its a thing that has been discussed here at length. Different players have talked about how, in all honesty, they didnt really care what President Trump had to say. And when i hear somebody say the nba has become a Political Organization, i disagree mainly because Something Like this isnt politics. To say that a black man shouldnt be killed for no reason. To say that not complying doesnt mean that you should have seven bullets in your back is not political. To me, thats right versus wrong. And i think thats the echoing sentiment on this campus. Also, where do we draw the line between sports and politics . Nobody is watching dana white and saying, why is he talking about politics. Is it only when somebody disagrees with you that it becomes a Political Organization . So i dont think any players here are really moved or fazed by the fact that donald trump said that. But all movements begin with some disruption. That is the essence of change. I was talking to someone the other day and they said, you know, maybe causing a stir isnt the right thing right now. And my response to that is, if we werent causing a stir, there would have never been a civil rights movement. My life is a direct product of people who decided they wanted to cause a stir. And to christines point, when history looks back on this moment, it will be about how pivotal that disruption was. So whether President Trump feels like the nba has become a Political Organization or not, i think, is a irrelevant to the Actual Movement thats taking place and the action that players are trying to take. Taylor rooks, christine brennan, thank you both for all of your insights. Thank you.
