Has tested positive after traveling to europe without a mask. And in a different note, in a couple of hours, william barr will testify on capitol hill in this longawaited showdown with house democrats. But lets talk about where we are in the pandemic this morning in the headspinning developments overnight. Joining us now is dr. Jean maras sew, from the Infectious Diseases at the university of alabama at birmingham. Dr. Carlos del rio, the executive associate dean of emery university, school of medicine, at grady health system. We should note hes contributing to the Moderna Vaccine trial. Doctor, we played dr. Anthony fauci having to make a statement this morning saying i dont mislead the American People. Ever. He said. Why did he have to do that . Because President Trump last night in addition to sending out to the 84 million social media message that you dont have to wear a mask, he sent out a message which says that dr. Fauci is misleading people. So fauci had to respond this morning. How does this affect the overall messaging to the American People as a thousand people are dying every day . Yeah. Good morning, john, good to be with you, but disheartening to haul of the contradictory and unnecessary dissension about what should be a unified fight to fight this virus. The virus is taking advantage of our inability to get on the same page with messaging. We have excellent anecdotal information from outbreaks that when you dont wear a mask, you dont wash your hands, you dont social distance the three ws we see accelerated transmission. Not to have our leaders on the same page with this, is the fundamental reason that we are in this mess. Dr. Faucis response was as useful masterful. He is trying to do the job he has been born for. Dr. Del rio, deaths are rising in 27 states this morning and the maddening thing is it doesnt have to be happening. Even at this late date, and the u. S. Is very late to being able to getting their arms around this its not too late. We can still do something and the easiest things in the world actually i mean if it comes to saving your life or saving one of your loved ones lives is wearing a mask and social distancing. You say that could turn it around still today. Yes, alisyn, that is correct. Its unfortunate you know the u. S. Right now is the epidemic is out of control. I just tell people that wuhan, china, in the total epidemic had 71,000 cases. Were having one wuhan a day in the United States. We can do something today, if we wear a mask, if we social distance and wash our hands. If we avoid crowded places and avoid close contact with a lot of people, we can stop transmission. The most important you can do as a person is not get infected. You and your family if i can do something for my loved ones its to prevent them from getting infected. If i wear a mask, i protect you and i protect me. Its about social consciousness and solidarity. I do not understand why were still debating this today. Right, its not just that issue either. The president disseminated this message saying you dont have to wear a mask and another part from a doctor speaking on a Facebook Post that got taken down, you dont have to do wear a mask because hydroxychloroquine will be the cure for everything. This is what dr. Fauci just said about that. And i go along with the fda. The overwhelming prevailing Clinical Trials that have looked at the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine have indicated that it is not effective in coronavirus disease. Yeah. He seemed to add some extra emphasis to make his point. We keep having the same debates or some people are, rather than focused on moving forward. Yeah. Another disheartening aspect of this dialogue. I think people need to understand that as physicians, if youre coming to me as my your doctor, we worship at the altar of the clinical trial. We have guidelines that are based on very robust evidence for practically everything. From managing your high Blood Pressure and now from the nih, we have guidelines that are evidence based for treating coronavirus. They do not include hydroxychloroquine for a reason. Its because we get together, we really rigorously look at the data and nothing supports that we should be using this drug. We do have great data on remdesivir. That was a single in baseball parlance, it didnt work as great as wed like and we do need other methods especially pills because we dont have anything to treat people in the clinics. Im frustrated as much as people who wish hydroxychloroquine would work, but the reality is that the data simply dont support it and thats the message that we need to be focused on. Dr. Del rio, now to vaccines, everybody is waited with bated breath to see if the Moderna Vaccines and others will move forward. We watched the First Americans get the phase 3 shots, 60,000 americans. Is this full steam ahead . Are there problems we should know about . I mean, tell us from on the ground how we should temper our optimism if so. Well, first of all, we should be thankful because if one thing is working in this epidemic in america its actually research. The Research Infrastructure has done a tremendous job not only of developing better therapies but also in developing vaccines from the isolation of the virus to the first injection in humans was only 65 days and the fact that were right now in phase 3 Clinical Trials that are going to show efficacy of a vaccine, are going to test for efficacy it is truly unbelievable. This is unprecedented speed. Of all the things not working well, one thing thats working well is the Clinical Trials and the Research Infrastructure. So americans should be very happy they are invested so heavily through the nih and research. Research is actually the way to find an answer to this epidemic. Am i hopeful, absolutely. I think one or more vaccines is going to show efficacy and will be effective to have one so we can get out of this pandemic. Thank god for as soon as and thank god for the work youre doing. Regional question now. I know theres big concern about alabama for some time. But now tennessee and we had dr. Peter hotez say hes concerned if you look at the map that more and more states as you move north are beginning to see rises in cases and could develop into full crisis mode soon. I think thats absolutely correct and it emphasizes that it does not respect the borders. We are woven together as a community. You cant expect one state to do something and try to get the virus under control and have a neighboring state not do the same sort of level of rigor and not see it as well. What were seeing is the Natural Evolution of the virus. Speaking of alabama, we have reached our peak of hospitalizations yet at uab hospital for the virus. Hospitalizations for people with the virus and we are now at an alltime high use of our icu beds in the state. We have 12 of our icu beds in the state remaining. So this is playing out exactly like what happened in the northeast. Could we now see that moving forward . Absolutely. To the north, to the west, to the east. To florida, yes. Absolutely. And i think thats really a concern because it is emphasizing that we are all in this together. We have to treat this like we are a single entity vulnerable to this virus. Thank you both for you expertise and for the work you do as part of your day jobs as well. Appreciate it. Have a good day. Thanks, good morning. All right. Were about two hours from William Barrs highly anticipated testimony before the house committee. We have the latest here. You get the sense that barr and members of the house, theyre looking for a circus today. Thats right, john. I think were going to hear a lot of fiery comments from the attorney general because he knows what the democrats are after him for. He knows that they believe he is essentially the bag man for the president and so thats why hes coming out firing. We have some of his comments, his opening remarks. It says, ever since i made it clear that i was going to do everything i could to get to the bottom of the grave abuses involved in the bogus russian gate scandal many have attempted to discredit me by conjuring up that im and that appears to be the agenda today. He hasnt appeared before this committee since becoming attorney general. We know that hes going to be asked about the ouster of jeff berman as u. S. Attorney in manhattan and his intervention in the roger stone, Michael Cohen cases. A lot of things that he was criticized for doing and he said hes doing his job, john. Well be watching very closely, just a couple hours from now. Thanks so much for being with us. Thanks. So the extra 600 unemployment benefit that millions of americans have depended on will expire in just days. What is congress doing to help the americans who need it . We are 98 days away from election day. And Public Opinion polls show President Trump slipping over his handling of coronavirus. I sat down with a group of voters in florida and texas, two of the states hardest hit by the virus. All voted for trump in 2016. Half of them regret that. Here is our latest pulse of the people. Show of hands, how many of you voted for President Trump in 2016. Okay. All of you voted for President Trump. Show of hands, how many of you plan to vote for him again in november. Okay. Three hands went up. Daniel, tell us your thoughts. I believe that his handling of the pandemic has been horrendous. I think his lack of accountability and an old political term he waffles on everything. He did say this, he didnt say that. And he meant this, but he didnt mean that. Hes totally unpredictable. I dont think anyone could have handled it any better. Listen to the health experts. When President Trump says something about ingesting lysol dont take it obviously an absurd statement. He should not be speaking on health matters, frankly. But he is. Hes not qualified to do it. He wasnt taking it as seriously as he should. But the entire government failed us. They were focused on impeachment as covid was spreading. Thats what they were focused on. They were all missing the ball. Show of hands, have you had a friend or know someone who got very sick with covid and or died . So three of you. Tell us what you think about President Trumps response to coronavirus. Well, they didnt get extremely sick and die, but i had a nephew and several friends that have tested positive for covid. I will say this. Im a business owner. My wife and i own a fitness, 24 7 fitness center. We had to close our gym for 84 days. We have had the business for seven years. I want to point out this all happened while President Trump is president. Trump has done what he can do. Okay . This is exactly whats happening, Small Businesses are losing their businesses, their livelihood because of this pandemic. I have people who i do know who have tested positive for covid. My inlaws. One, she had to wear the mask, because she has allergies. I think the breathing of her own breath and having you know, deal with allergies, i think that got her sick. She started to get a fever. Shes over 60 years old. She panics because theres a fear mongering going on. Oh, youre going to die. So she runs and they test her positive, she goes home, had fever for two days. Shes fine now. Im confused about your point. Do you think people are not dying around the country . What im trying to say and make a point to is that 382 million americans, 4 million have tested positive and 145,000 have died. So youre willing to live with those numbers, those numbers are okay for you . No number of death is okay. If you do the math its a 99. 9 survival rate. What are we freaking out about . Okay, i dont understand. 99 . In 2017 and 2018 there was 13 more deaths in Heart Disease than in covid. Also, three times more deaths of accidents and Car Accidents but we didnt is shut down the interstates and take peoples cars away. We didnt shut down the freeways because theres Car Accidents. What we did was we did science and testing and we came to the conclusion that seat belts were necessary to keep us out there motoring along, as safely as possible. As far as Heart Disease goes, i cant walk into my local supermarket and catch that from the idiot standing next to me. I have a breathing problem, i dont wear a mask im an idiot. Youd rather i die because i cant breathe with the mask on. Do you know how hypocritical youre going to come to my Grocery Store and use that feeble excuse, yes, you are. You can breathe fine with a mask. I cannot. I cannot. So, what is it like to hear the strong reservations of your fellow panelists here . Well, you know, i think that everyone has a right to their own opinion but i also believe here in america we have a lot of Serious Problems that need to be taken care of, that honestly have been allowed to fester for far too long. I dont think theres anything that donald trump would do that will make the supporters that are dug in not vote for him. If that were the case, then theyd be thinking like me right now. Im hearing a repeat of 2016. The antitrumpers. The people who are like, oh, i cant vote for him. Its not fair to call someone like me a never trumper because i voted for the man in 2016. Me too, thank you, tommy. Thank you. You all did. You all did. But what im saying its the rhetoric. Its the rhetoric of the never trump movement. I didnt say you. Its not rhetoric, its based on facts. Its 2016. Its the same we at least we gave him the opportunity, we gave him the chance. Its what hes done in office, not what he did in the twitter feed or prior life prior to becoming president. Even though hes temperament, he was willing to call out what people who refuse to call out. I think thats something that we really need right now. Ill say one more thing. I saw an interview with trump and the guy from barstool sports and something that he said hit me. Pretty ironically. He said that the preceding years prior to me announcing running for president were the best of my life. I cant remember his exact quote but he was fabulously wealthy. He had this life and id like to remind him that obama was president during the best times of his life and if he loses well get through this. That was really interesting to me. I will say that at the very beginning the mere layout of it is interesting. If you have three people who voted for donald trump who have regrets we heard from two of them say theyre directly relate today the pandemic, that reflect what is were seeing in the polls right now. That there is serious and growing concern around the country about that response. And its really interesting to hear voice to that. Youre going to hear more from monica in the lower left corner. I felt i feel badly some of her was left on the cutting room floor in this episode. Tomorrow we talk about his response to the nationwide protests after George Floyds death and they have strong feelings about that as well. Monica, she had regrets instantly. So she will explain that. You know, it should go without saying also that if you are losing people who voted for you in 2016 and you arent doing enough much to expand your electorate youre in trouble. Thank you for that. Battle lines are drawn in congress over the next stimulus plan. A key Financial Life line for millions of americans who are struggling runs out in just days. The 1 trillion stimulus proposal just unveiled by Senate Republicans includes a 400 cut to the weekly extra unemployment benefit which expires this week. Democrats already denouncing this proposal. Can the two sides come together . Joining us now, House Majority leader steny hoyer. Thank you very much for being with us. 600 extra dollars, that expires this month. We saw the republican plan and for the time being they want to cut that back to 200. Can you meet in the middle . Well, well see. But it is typical of the republican response to the American People in saying youre on your own. Obviously to have a draconian 400 cut immediately is going to make it very, very difficult for American Families to meet the rent, to pay for food, to pay their living expenses. It is not acceptable that the 2 1 2 months after we passed the heroes act, the republicans would still be dissembling, still not able to reach an agreement or coming forward with sufficient assistance to meet this extraordinary pandemic and crisis that america and the American People are confronting. It mirrors of course the trumps failure to respond in an effective way to this pandemic. Failure to apply the resources that are necessary to get us back to health and get us back to business and get us back to school. The incredible mismanagement of this pandemic and the incredible negligence of the United States senate and the Republican Party to respond in a timely passion is mirrored in this proposal. It is insufficient and it will let down the American People and it will damage the economy. One of the things that republicans some republicans say is that 600 serves as disincentive to go back to work. It is more in some cases than they say that people were making at the beginning. So what do you say to that . I think thats an argument that is it has some validity to it. And we ought to deal with that. And there is way to deal with that. But not this way. Not cold turkey. Not here you have it, now you dont. The American People were relying on that and we got 30 million americans who have lost their jobs. Highest unemployment that we have had in decades. The republican response is inadequate and frankly, its incomprehensible that the states and local governments and cities and governments and territories that have been hemorrhaging revenue, hemorrhaging revenue because of the pandemic are left out totally in the cold. They hire our firefighters. They hire our police. They hire our sanitation workers. They hire our teachers and theyll be left with an ontion to lay off people who are critically important in responding to this pandemic. Its inadequate. I want to make sure im hearing you correctly. It seems like youre willing to come off some from 600 but not the 200, but youre not demanding 600 or bust . Its not 600 or bust. You know, you dont Speaker Pelosi said the other day, we dont have red lines, we have values. We are going in with values. To say that 600 or nothing, no, thats not what we are. We are prepared to discuss this, but were not prepared to let down the American People and let down the states and the city and the local governments who hire people who are meeting the crisis, including health personnel. We are not willing to about walk away from the American People and in my opinion, this is a mcconnell fig leaf. Its a pretense of response, rather than a substantive response. Lest they would have acted much more quickly if they wanted to deal with this problem. But but nothing happened. I want to ask you a matter of parochial interest. The Miami Marlins now with 14 players and coaches, scheduled to play this week in baltimore as soon as wednesday. Is it your opinion that it would be safe to host the marlins at camden yards . Look, ill let the medical personnel decide that question. Im not expert enough to do that but you have to be concerned, the Major League Baseball has to be concerned. You come back and within a few weeks of coming back, 14 people on one team are tested positive for coronavirus. Thats a worry. But ill leave that decision as to what needs to happen to the medical and scientific personnel. It gets to the issue of how early or the push to open may be before an entity, a state, a city is ready. I was struck yesterday by the president of the United States yesterday in the midst of growing case numbers and whatnot saying this. Listen. I really do believe a lot of the governors should be opening up states, that theyre not opening. And well see what happens with them. Your reaction . I think its typical of President Trumps responses. A, shifting responsibility. B, evidencing no plan, no concept of how we can defeat this pandemic. No ability to lead this country. It is tragic that at the time of great crisis we have a president who has no plan, who has no sense of what the right thing is to do and dividing america rather than bringing it together to confront this virus. Now, youre up at the capitol right now. I dont know if you can see it, a live picture right now of the capitol and that is of course the late representative john lewis. There we see it right now. This is a live picture there. Deeply moving services yesterday inside the capitol. I know this is a personal loss for you. This is someone who was a friend of yours for decades. Yes. And i dont know if i heard this correctly. Did you walk with him across the Edmund Pettus bridge 15 times . Thats correct. Some of those times hand in hand with my friend and my beloved friend, john lewis. One i have said the day after his death, i said there was a hole in the heart of america. A sense of great loss of a leader who brought to us a vision of love and togetherness and a beloved community. Who brought every day of his life a positive attitude to make america better and have it live out its ideals of equality and justice and fairness to all. And we experienced a great loss and yes, youre correct. Yesterdays ceremony was short at johns request. He was a humble human being. He was a great presence, a great person as i say, christ like in so many ways. But very humble. Selfeffacing. Not necessarily wanting the attention on him, but on the vision that he had for a beloved community and a commitment to making america live out its ideals. We have sustained a great loss in america. He was called the conscience of the congress. He was the conscience of the country. At 23 speaking to all of america in 1983, coming together. 63, excuse me. Coming together and treating people not based upon the color of their skin, as Martin Luther king said, but on their character. And on their conduct. John lewis was a great, great, Great American and a great human being. I know he was deeply important to you personally and also to your family. A great story about meeting members of your family. Yes. I took my granddaughters and i took a greatgranddaughter with me on the faith and politics had a program, pilgrimage, to montgomery, to birmingham and to selma. On an annual basis. We went to mississippi as well. I travelled with john lewis to south africa and was in Nelson Mandelas jail cell on Robins Island with john lewis. What an extraordinary moment that was. Two extraordinary human beings, Nelson Mandela and john lewis. Leaders on behalf of the best that is within us. Le. Leader hoyer, we are deeply sorry for your loss and we thank you so much for being with us this morning. But one thing i think we can all say we are all better for having had john lewis walk on this earth, so thank you. And the people in my church would say amen. I appreciate you being with us. I want to leave everyone with live pictures again of the capitol right now. John lewis, due soon to make his final journey home to georgia. Well be right back. That was the easy part. Usaa insurance is made the way liz and mike need it easy. If kids are returning to school in the fall, how will we with get them there . Millions of students rely on school buses, but of course theres not a lot of social distance on a school bus so what changes can be made now . Well, cnns Bianna Golodryga has more. What have you learned . Hi, good morning. Well, as the nation struggles to come up with solutions on how to safely reopen schools, a major hurdle could make that journey even bumpier. How to transport the nearly 40 million American Students who rely on buses to and from school every day. Remember their parents are trying to get back to a semblance of normalcy with their jobs and less than 10 of students ride their bikes or walk to most schools. Honestly it was what reporter lucy forbes was shocked when she learned her 14yearold daughter wont be eligible to take a school bus to and from her houston middle school. The acting superintendent recently announced that in order to meet cdc social distancing guidelines, only a fraction of the 60,000 students will have a seat. We have to make alter reporter forbess mother make it impossible for her to drive her daughter herself. For me it will require twohour commute a day. I have a great spectrum of options. We have anywhere from 76 to 83 students per capacity. As you can see, we have labeled our seats so we would space students out. Does this require configuring every school bus in the city . We are working through that. Reporter refitting the buses is a challenge for School Districts facing budget pressures. Austin will have a capacity of 12 students and only eligible students will be provided with seating. Philadelphia Public Schools plan to limit each school bus to 11 to 15 students. Smaller cities are also feeling the pressure. It is more of a rural school issue. Many of your bigger metropolitan schools where they have more students, but quite often have a smaller geographic district. Reporter the Ionia School District covers more than 132 square miles across michigan where over 1,500 students rely on bus transportation. The superintendent is running out of options when schools will open their doors august 26th. I wouldnt have enough buses to socially distant the kids. I would need six buses a route. Reporter many of the bus drivers are concerned about the possible risks to their health. We should have a partition, something that will block us from the kids as they board the bus. Reporter robert sally has been a School Bus Driver in the boston area for 39 years. I get a lot of calls for what is the plan for starting september 10th . Its bad to say we dont know anything. Reporter there are currently few solutions at hand. The School Bus Industry has introduced a 10 billion relief plan that congress may or may not take up. Social distancing will make carpooling less appealing. And according to the cdc, less than 10 of u. S. Students walk or bike to most schools. Its great to say that schools are open. But if we dont have a way a reliable way thats organized and structured to send our kid there is, it will trickle down into nothing else happening either. Aside from needing more buses, School Districts are finding themselves in need of more drivers as well. The superintendent of ionia said he had three bus drivers quit because theyre concerned about covid and being infected. I want to show you this picture. Our colleague Meredith Edwards who happened to produce this piece was taking her daughter to a sports Practice Event and took this photo. Its the marietta, georgia, School District advertising on a school bus a 1,000 signing bonus for more drivers. So clearly there is a deficit for drivers. Theres not enough planning and this is a story that we havent focused on nearly enough in this country. We are talking about getting kids to school. They have to get there safely as well. There it is in stark relief, that advertisement on the side of the school bus that says it all. Thank you very much for that of that. So attorney general barr will be testifying on capitol hill. The Big Questions he will face next. Have constipation with belly pain, straining, and bloating, again and again. No way. More exercise. More water. And more fiber is the only way to manage it. Is it . Maybe you think. Its occasional constipation. Maybe its not. It could be a chronic medical condition called ibsc, and time to say yesss to linzess. Linzess works differently than laxatives. It helps relieve belly pain and lets you have more frequent and complete bowel movements. Do not give linzess to children less than six and it should not be given to children six to less than 18, it may harm them. Do not take linzess if you have a bowel blockage. Get immediate help if you develop unusual or severe stomach pain, especially with bloody or black stools. The most common side effect is diarrhea, sometimes severe. If its severe, stop taking linzess and call your doctor right away. Other side effects include gas, stomach area pain, and swelling. Change your thinking to ibsc. If your constipation and belly pain keeps coming back, tell your doctor and say yesss to linzess. Were about an hour away from William Barrs first testimony before the House Judiciary Committee since he became attorney general. Theyre expected to press him on the criminal cases of trump allies and barrs role in the forcible breakup of peaceful demonstrators outside the white house so the president could have a photoop with a bible in front of the church. Joining us now, Jeffrey Toobin and laura coats. Friends, we have been super excited about this segment all day because were going to turn it over to you. Two of the great legal minds here. And what we want to know is what questions you have for the attorney general. Jeffrey, you go first. Okay, i think the broad question that the democrats will certainly will want to know the answer to, are you the peoples lawyer as the attorney general is supposed to be, or are you Donald Trumps personal attorney . I think many of the issues flow from that. You know, why did you downplay or mislead the public about the Mueller Report . Why did you intervene in roger stones case to get him a lighter sentence . Why did you intervene in Michael Flynns case to get the case thrown out altogether . All of those questions relate to what the attorney generals job really is, and democrats are going to try to make the case hes doing Donald Trumps business, and not the publics. Theres nothing i like more than outsourcing our Job Responsibilities to you guys. So what are your questions . Consider it outsourced an consider it appreciated because i had questions for him prior to reading his Opening Statement and now i have questions after reading it, i wonder are you delusional in many respects because he leads the public to believe on the one hand he is here and he was invited. He was forced to come back to the department of justice because he alone was going to remove it from the political bowels they were in. And he asked for it and all for a reason to politicize it. As jeffrey has already talked about the questions that he has for him, most of the questions i have surrounding fall under the umbrella of whether hes aware of how politicized the department of justice has become . Instead of actually upholding the rule of law and enforcing the federal statutes and ensuring theres equality under the law and no persons above it, he has done the polar opposite in so many instances. One of the areas i found most disturbing was his notion in talking about it was a horrible killing of george floyd, but then went on to talk about how black on black crime is the bigger issue to focus on. This is not someone who has an attachment with reality, even giving the stats about white men versus black men killed by police this year and not answering the question, where is the data that the department of justice intends to provide in the Opening Statement . The attorney general he does address the idea that hes a political attorney general as opposed to someone just dispensing justice. My decision have been left to the independent judgment based on the law and fact without any direction or interference from the white house or anyone from outside the department. He dropped the factotum bomb. He said hes not the president s factotum. Well, i mean, thats an assertion and the question is what do his actions show . I mean, sometimes if you are such a toady you know what to do even if youre not instructed to do it. I think, you know, laura raises the broader question of the response to the unrest in the cities. And specifically whats going on in portland. You know, one of the key questions that is broader than just william barr, but barr is relevant, are federal authorities, federal Law Enforcement going in to portland as people trying to keep the peace and protect federal property, or are they stirring up more trouble. Are they soliciting Campaign Video for Donald Trumps Reelection Campaign by trying to show that the degree of anger in the streets. I think the response to protests whether its in portland or in the photoop in Lafayette Square in front of the white house, that is another area that im sure will be explored today. Lets talk about that photoop in front of Lafayette Square where the president went and posed in front of the church with the bible, because that is that was the use of we saw with it with our own eyes force by National Guardsmen at the behest of bill barr for a protest that we saw with our own eyes were peaceful. And in fact now we have the testimony today one of the most senior guardsman there was on the scene will testify to congress. Adam demarco, major adam demarco he said the events i witnessed on the evening of july 1 were deeply disturbing to me. Having served in the combat zone and assessing protests, i felt no harm in the protest. Who are you going to believe, bill barr or the lying eyes, and everything we have been able to see and witness with cameras and live and being able to see the ham handed bible holding and all of this is going around the idea can there be use of force by officers, federal agents, yes there can be.
