Hospitalizations. Florida had the most deaths in a single day since this pandemic began. Across the country, 900 new deaths reported overnight. The director of the cdc warns that this fall and winter will be, quote, one of the most difficult times weve experienced in American Public health. Despite those warnings, the white house is again openly attacking dr. Anthony fauci. Think about that. 136,000 dead americans, rising hospitalizations, and the white house response is to attack the scientists that Americans Trust most on this subject. There was some promising vaccine news overnight. A highly anticipated vaccine trial. I want did produce certain immune response. This drug from moderna will now advance to the next crucial stage of testing. The president really not focused on any of this in this bizarre, rambling rose garden news conference. This was, in fact, a Campaign Event in the rose garden, focused mostly about his grievances with joe biden. Another development overnight, the New York Times reporting the Trump Administration is ordering hospitals to bypass this cdc and send all patient information to hhs instead. This cuts out the cdc and may make this data much harder to access for the medical community. Joining us now, cnn chief medical correspondent, dr. Sanjay gupta. Sanjay, we woke up to an oped from trade adviser Peter Navarro in usa today. And Peter Navarro goes after dr. Anthony fauci point by point. Were not going to go into the substance of it, because im not sure thats whats most important here. Whats important is you have a white house official, clearly sanctioned by the white house, attacking the nations leading Infectious Disease doctor and given right now the only questions we should be asking is, does it save american lives or cost american lives . How do you see that action this morning . Well, you know, im the medical correspondent for this network. This is no longer a medical story. I mean, this is a political story. I read the oped. It seems unseemly and dangerous, frankly. Not to mention, taking ate step further, much of it is just wrong. I know you dont want to go through it point by point, but you make accusations that are wrong, put it in an oped, its not fact checked. They say that fauci was against a travel ban from china. Not true. Peter navarro still talking about clhydroxychloroquine base on observational studies that were done after level i evidence has already been presented, prompting the uk and the nih to stop their trials. Prompts the World Health Organization to stop their trials. Prompting the fda to rescind an emergency use authorization. You write all of this stuff, its not true, and its designed to basically undermine the trust that people have in the guy who knows this stuff better than anybody. I think the one thing that complicates this is that nobody knew everything at the very start about this novel coronavirus. Its a novel coronavirus. So the idea that you know every single thing about it from the very beginning, nobody knew that. Nobody in the world, nobody on the planet. I almost wish they didnt name it coronavirus, because this is almost something completely different in some ways. So that part is true. But the idea of undermining someone like fauci or undermining the faith in public health, overall, at this point, is ridiculous. This is not new. There has been this long battle against science, i think, thats been going on for some time. But the urgency of the matter right now, people look at the numbers on the right side of the screen and see whats happening, politically, purely politically, that this is not a medical story is really dangerous. Sanjay, we need to get your take on Something Else that is a development this morning that seems alarming. That is that the Trump Administration no longer wants hospitals to give their data of how many patients they have, of how many hospital beds, of the ventilators, how many patients are on them to the cdc. They want that information to go to them at the hhs. So hhs, within the Trump Administration. And that data, which is now public through the cdc, would not be public via hhs. And that means that the information the modelers use, the information that i assume you use, the information that we report, the information that allows us to see all of that on our screen, on the side of our screen, this feels like something bad, a shift that is for less transparency. How do you see it . Yeah wing it, i think its g lead to more opaqueness. I can tell you from the beginning, what we were doing as journalists, im talking early days, january, february, as we would go literally on a white board and we had every department of health listed on that white board and we were changing the numbers every day by ourselves. At some point, we were told, look, all of this information is now going to go via cdc. Frankly, that transition took a little longer than we would have liked to actually have the numbers now coming from a single organization. Many times, well still go to doh, department of Health Information in various states like florida, like texas, like arizona, like california, just to validate these numbers. There are independent trackers like Johns Hopkins has been doing a lot of that. But why . Thats the big question. What logic does this have, other to take away the data from the epidemiologists that are the best in the world looking at this data, making sense of it, translating it for people versus giving it to hhs. You know, i dont know what the justification for that is, but we do have the worlds best agency actually handling this data that is now seemingly going to be out of the loop. It may force us journalists to go straight to the departments of health, again, as we had had to do in the past, its a yaadd another layer of opacity to the whole thing. We talk about the daily death count. 900 new deaths. 11 states showing record hospitalizations. Sanjay, you were just talking about the models and the ability to model. The imhe model, the model that most people have been looking at, they came out with a new forecast overnight, suggesting, i think i have this right, 220,000 deaths that we can expect by november at this point, which is a big jump in their modeling. Why . Yeah, i mean, this is for all the reasons you guys have been talking about on the program for some time, theres significant surges in several states. You know, florida, texas, arizona, and california. But as we look at the model, theres a longer list of states that are being affected, as well. Louisiana, kentucky, mississippi, nevada, new mexico, south carolina, tennessee, utah. I mean, you know, i think it was probably a few weeks ago we said, if you look at the map overall of the country, there really is no place that you could say is no longer vulnerable here. So, you know, were paying attention to several states that have had the most significant surge. These are large states. But smaller states that i think, you know, have sort of been wondering if they dodged a lot of this, theyre now starting to get affected. And the modeling is starting to reflect that. Overall, obviously, you look at the map, it does not look good. And as you measure this week to week, really, because its a rolling average, its i think it doesnt even reflect how significant the situation has become, because you may have a significant surge one week and a slight drop and it looks like youre improving. But overall, the trends have really been going up just about everywhere. In terms of the positive news, sanjay, lets talk about how moderna is moving into phase iii of its vaccine trials, which means that it will now be tested on 60,000 30,000 adults rather than 600. So a much bigger testing pool. We just talked to professor haseltine about this and he gives it a 5 on the scale of optimism, between 1 and 10. Are you anywhere higher or lower than the 5 of optimism . 5 is good for haseltine. Hes a very good skeptics on this, for decades, he has been, for all sorts of vaccines. And i appreciate you letting me finish with a little bit to have good news. Because this is some good news. Ive been reporting on this for some time, and you guys ask me these questions, and were basing it on press releases and preprints. Its early data, though. 45 adults, all healthy, between the aging of 15 and 45. They got two shots separated by about a month. And the thing theyre looking for is to see if they have these antibodies, specifically, neutralizing antibodies. Theres two types of antibodies, there are binding antibodies, that bind anywhere on the virus, which may or may not help. Neutralizing antibodies are the ones that bind to the virus in a way that prevent it from entering human cells and there were those neutralizing antibodies. Big questions that remain, still, is it going to work . You know, if it works in a lab, is it actually going to work when you give it to tens of thousands of people . You give it to tens of thousands of people here, tens of thousands of people over here dont get it, do these people have a lower chance of getting the infection . Its really as simple as that, but it takes a while to sort of make sure that you can show that, you can demonstrate that. And those are the trials that will start at the end of this month. You sound like youre a 5, at best . Its its early days. Its a tough thing to game out. But im optimistic. I would give it higher than a 5. I would go to 7, maybe even 8, because if these neutralizing antibodies theres no reason to suspect that they wont provide that benefit. I have a little bit of concern about the side effects of this vaccine. You know, if you look at they gave escalating doses. 25 micrograms, 100 micrograms, and 250. Everybody in this 100 microgram and the 250 microgram dose got some sort of side effect. I mean, you can take a look at the list there. They were transient, you know, they didnt last very long, but pretty significant side effects. And it wasnt significant enough to stop the trial, but these were healthy people. So as you give it to older people, people with preexisting conditions, younger people, weve got to make sure that the side effect profile does not become, you know, a ratelimiting step here. But, you know, 7 still in terms of the scale, in terms of optimism. I dont know why alisyn is going after you the minute the word vaccine came out, you smiled. I think this is an important development. You can see the potential here, sanjay. Thanks so much for being with us this morning. You got it. Thank you. Were talking about record deaths reported in a single day in florida. Florida setting a new record overnight with its highest single day death toll since the pandemic began. And this morning, 54 hospitals in the state are reporting they are at icu capacity. No beds left. Several south florida mayors met with the governor yesterday, but one of them was blocked from attending. Joining me now is that mayor, Carlos Hernandez of hialeah, florida, in Miamidade County. Mr. Mayor, thank you so much for being with us this morning. You said, after being blocked from this meeting with Governor Desantis, the reason why this pandemic is taking and destroying the lives of our residents is because our governor acts like a spoiled child. What do you mean . I mean, this is not time to play politics. This is a time to lead and weve had so many mixed messages from the governor, with confusion at the state level, at the county lev level, the cities where its been difficult for many of our large cities. And im the second largest city in the state of florida and the one most affected by the coronavirus that these cities have had to try to unite. So theres been a lot of miscommunication. And there was a perfect example, where i dont foe for what political reasons, i have been critical of some of the things that have happened because of the coronavirus and the lack of some of the things that the state has not been able to do in time was to not invite me no, not to invite me. And when i showed up, it was a very important meeting, to have somebody from his office come down and say, mayor, this is only by invitation only and youre not invited. Im one of the largest cities in the sedate for the governor of a state to be playing political games or being upset with me for something ive cricorrectly, it. These are serious things. Our state is in a critical stage right now. The governor claims he didnt make the guest list and the Governors Office says they offered to set up a meeting for after. Your response . I have not heard from anybody. And again, this was done intentionally, because when i walked through that building, which is Miamidade County government building, i was met by somebody from Miamidade County who said, mr. Mayor, hold on, somebody from the Governors Office is going to come down. This is a governor meeting and a few minutes later, somebody from his office came down and introduced themselves and said, mayor hernandez, this is by invitation only and youre not invited. And at that point, i said, well, thats pretty embarrassing the mayor of the second largest city in the county is not invited to this meeting. It shows me the leadership we have in tallahassee. How often have you spoken with Governor Desantis during the pandemic . Thats one of my criticisms. Hes never spoken to me, never come to the city. Ive never had any conversations with him and thats a fact. Also another fact that he was very, very late in setting up testing sites here in this area of Miamidade County. And the other criticism was, you know, with the unemployment and the economic problems, the state have big issues in sending out checks and people no checks for weeks and months because there was a backlog at the state. Those were criticisms that were facts. I guess he doesnt like criticism and behaved like a spoiled child. Its kbaurembarrassing. What would you have told him . Had you been invited to the meeting, if you had a chance to talk to Governor Desantis and tell him about the situation in hialeah, what would you say . First of all, i like to listen. And second of haul, i think the most important thing was, hey, listen, weve all got to work together. We have this serious issue here. And the message should be one united message. We should all lead more often. And again, work together. This is no time for politics, if you dont like it personally or not. We have to look after our citizens in these very difficult times. That would have been my message. I would have wanted to be part of that meeting. And again, be part of the solution. Again, it was so embarrassing, not only to me, but to the 250,000 citizens of this great city, not to really be going in there. 10,000 infections, we understand, so far in hialeah. Whats the Current Situation in your city . We understand in Miamidade County as a whole, there are ten icu hospitals that have reached capacity, no beds left, the Positivity Rate is at 30 , which is astronomical, but whats the situation in high leah . Very similar. We have three hospitals here, almost capacity. And if this continues the next couple of weeks, well find ourselves in a very, very critical situation. So that meeting was so important for me to be part of it. And im the second city most affected by this coronavirus, for the governor to make that decision, again, i was in shock. And not because of anything political or personal or anything like that, because i havent talked to this man in year, this is serious business. And i thought it was a childish behavior on behalf of the governor of the state of florida. Thats a shame. Weve spoken to dan gelber, mayor of the beach. They both have told us in the next couple of weeks, if the situation doesnt improve and the hospitals fill up, they would have to consider stayathome orders. What would need to happen and how soon would it need to happen in hialeah for you to consider imposing new stayathome orders . Thats a great question. Listen, thats why we have to work together. And ive been working together with the mayor of miami beach, the mayor of miami, miami grn gardens. Because one account cannot do something and the other one doesnt. Because this virus doesnt know where miami ends and hialeah starts, when hialeah starts, were all interrelated. The state is interrelated. Were very interrelated with Miamidade County and broward county. We went ahead and closed our restaurants this past week, and you know what happened this weekend . Most people from miamidade went to broward county, which is the next county up for dinner. So thats the message that i wanted to send and thats the message i want the governor, that this is all interrelated. What one city does affect anothers. What one county does affects another. So we dont have to work united from tallahassee all the way down. Thats the only way were going stoss to solve this problem. Sometimes we are not being in agreement with the county government. Mayor Carlos Hernandez, just so you know and just so our audience knows, we have invited Governor Ron Desantis. We invite Governor Ron Desantis to come on cnn almost every day. And he has regularly declined. So we appreciate you being with us this morning. We wish you the best of luck. Please keep us posted. Thank you very much for this opportunity. Alisyn . Why are africanamericans still dying at the hands of Law Enforcement in this country . And so are white people. So are white people. What a terrible question to ask. So are white people. More white people, by the way. More white people. President trump really didnt like that question. He is dismissing the outrage over the Police Killings of black people after, of course, weeks of these protests weve seen across the country against racist systems. Joining us now is cnn political analyst David Gregory and cnn political commentator, bakari sellers. Baa bakari, what was that let me first talk about your book, please. Hes the author of the book my vanishing country. What was that . When was that response . He was very angry about even getting the question. Yeah, no, the response was a lie, thats what it was. What we do know and what statistics show us, africanamericans are two and a half times more likely to die from use of force than white people in this country. Theyre more likely to incur use of force than white people in this country. And we have a serious problem that i can honestly tell you if george floyd was white, he would probably still be alive today. I have not seen an image of a knee on the back of the neck of a white person in this country for eight minutes and 46 seconds. Im not going to say that Police Brutality does not happen to white people. I would never dare say that. I would just say there has become a high incidence and occurrence of this towards people of color that results in death and fatality. The problem with the president s statement is that he always falls down on the wrong side of history. It seems like you and i are having this conversation often, alisyn, about the president just not understanding where america is going and the best part about this country is we can get to where we want to go, even without the president being there with us. And thats what it looks like is going to have to happen. Its not the math, its the message. Its the overall message and the way he chose to address it. And david, we saw another example when the president was confronted with issues surrounding the confederate battle flag, which i want you all to listen very carefully here, and listen to see if you can the detect an ounce of discomfort inside the president s head with the confederate battle flag. Listen to this. Would you be comfortable with your supporters displaying the confederate battle flag at political events . It depends on what your definition is. But i am comfortable with freedom of speech. Its very simple. You understand why the flag is a painful symbol for many people, because its a reminder of slavery. Well, people love it. I know people that like the Confederate Flag, and theyre not thinking about slavery. I look at nascar, you go to nascar, you had those flags all over the place, they stopped it. I just think its freedom of speech, whether its Confederate Flags or black lives matter or anything else you want to talk about, its freedom of speech. Its the message. David, and how he chooses to deliver it. People love it people love the Confederate Flag, says the president. I was thinking as bakari was talking in response to the previous question that the president doesnt have a second sentence as a followup beyond wla what happened to george floyd was terrible, which everyone would agree about. He doesnt have anything else to say other than then jumping to the culture war that he wants to foment for his own political purposes. Hes missing the moment. He doesnt know his history. Thats obviously and thats not going to change. The president will not become enlightened about how painful the Confederate Flag is, what it represents as white supremacy. Hell touch the nerve for people who think, no, its southern heritage, its the lost cause, thats what hes interested in fomenting. He just completely misses the moment. Im with bakari. Were here every week or so again discussing the fact that we have a president whos willfully ignorant of the pain of our history. And that has him deeply out of step with the country. I heard Something Different yesterday. I know we are here and we have this conversation about why the president seems so tone deaf at this moment, but i heard Something Different yesterday in one of his responses to katherine hairish. I harder the talking points going haywire. I heard something malfunctioning. Let me play for you this moment where hes talking about the economy. Listen to this. Were starting to do very well in the polls, because im for law and order, im for strong business, our jobs are coming back at a record level, like weve never seen anything like it. Record level. Were heading up. Its turning up to be the v just like it i built it once before, the strongest economy ever, im doing it again, and they dont want that to happen. Major cities in this country are shutting down today. The hospitals are filling up. He says, im starting to do very well in the polls. No, youre not. Not in swing states. Not all the latest polls. The talking points that he was sticking to werent landing or working yesterday. Well, this is listen, when we wanted to elect a reality show president , we all end up in survivor, right . And so this is where we are. And we have a president who doesnt have the necessary level of compassion, empathy, or understanding to tackle this issue. There are 130,000 people who have died because of this administrations incompetence. Their utter incompetence. And he cant wrap his head around that. But lets just i know this is going to be difficult to do, but even if you take the president out of this, look at the utter incompetence right below him. Look at the desantises and the kemps of the world and the Henry Mcmasters of the world and you see these rates continue to spike up and no one doing anything. The Republican Party and this is Mitch Mcconnells problem and this will be Kevin Mccarthys problem as you go into an election cycle, the Republican Party has become a party thats enveloped itself in incompetence. And not being able to navigate our countrys issues. And i just dont think the president truly grasps where we are. And to talk about an economy where you still have so many people filing unemployment, the white house solution and ivanka trumps solution is, just go out and do better and find another job. Well, that aint that easy. So this white house and this Republican Party, no one is speaking up as the antithesis to trump. Again, no other words to describe the republican of 2020 than utter incompetence. David gregory, veteran white house reporter, and very young veteran white house reporter, i want to know your take on this 60minute Campaign Event in the res garden yesterday and if we can put it up on the screen, ivanka trump who works in the administration doing a twitter ad for goya beans there. Where does this fall in your sensibilities . I think its become very consistent with a president who just goes off on his own, whatever his gut tells him, whatever his inclination is, he doesnt hide from the press by any means. He gives a lot of interviews and gives a lot of fodder for those of us who look at this and analyze it to say, whats his message . What is he trying to do . Hes trying to do multiple things at once and he was just all over the place in this rose garden appearance, which is problematic on the substance of what hes saying, as to whether its true or not. Any political professional would look at that and say, if this is a president running for reelection, what is he for . What is he you know, whats the basis for his own reelection . He looks incredible erratic. And if we look at this period frankly, if we look at the last month, at least. If hes defeated soundly in this reelection, it will all come together. And if he somehow prevailed and is he reelected, a lot of people will be confounded about how he was able to prevail despite the polling, despite his own behavior. And he does seem to offer these kinds of narrow justifications. You know, the economy is showing signs of strength and recovery in certain areas, but as you say, were also seeing a new surges of the pandemic that, of course, imperil that economy and he cant hold those two thoughts together. And beans. David gregory, bakari sellers, we appreciate you both being with us this morning. President trumps niece, mary trump, breaking her silence this morning for the first time. President trumps niece, mary trump, giving her first interview about her tellall book on donald trump. She claims her uncle is, quote, utterly incapable of leading the country. Cnns sara murray joins us with more. Reporter mary trump is finally speaking out. This is her First Television interview and shes not Holding Anything back. In the first clip that weve seen, she essentially says that her uncle, President Trump, is unfit for office and dangerous. And i just remember thinking, he seems tired. He seems like this is not what he signed up for, if he even knows what he signed up for. And i thought his response was actually more enlightening than my statement. And he said they wont get me. And so far, looks like hes right. And if youre in the oval office today, what would you say to him . Resign. Now, President Trump did not want this book to see the light of day, but it was actually his brother, robert trump, who took mary trump and her publisher to court to try to block the books release and block mary trump from talking about it. And when you dig into the book, you can really see why. She really paints this picture of a very toxic culture in the trump family and says, you know, essentially, this is why donald trump is the way that he is. Shes a clinical psychologist and so she brings a lot of that to the book and also to this interview. Heres her describing a little bit of how she sees the president s personality. He once had a spark of kindness. Yeah. I think he did. One of the unforgivable things my grandfather did to donald was he severely restricted the range of Human Emotion that was accessible to him, which makes it what does that mean . It means that certain feelings were not allowed. Like . Sadness. The impulse to be kind, the impulse to be generous, those things that my grandfather found superfluous, unmanly. Now, in the book, she essentially calls donald trump a sociopath, says he cant synthesize information, says hes incapable of empathy. Certainly not pa very flattering portrait of the president or of his family. Back to you guys. Much more of this interview and a full discussion on all of this coming up, sara. Really appreciate it. A New York Times journalist decided to head to the home state of texas to report on the pandemic. Just before leaving, he learned that five members of his immediate family had contracted the virus. But by the time he arrived, that number had more than doubled. Joining us is Edgar Sandoval from the New York Times. Also with is us is his 17yearold nephew, one of the family members who contracted covid. So edgar, you moved to the Rio Grande Valley as a teenager in texas. So when the coronavirus hit there, you said to your editors in the New York Times, i know this area. I would like to go cover it. Then tell us about the text that you got just before you got on the plane to go cover it, what your sister said. Well, thank you for having me, first of all, i appreciate the opportunity. Yes, so it was a surreal experience. I volunteered to cover the story because i know the area pretty well. And i had been here before to cover immigration and each time i come back, we have a big family dinner and, you know, i get to see family members. I was thinking of the same experiences this time around. But the day before i boarded the plane thats when i got this text that really froze me in place. She said, brother, everyone has covid. And i thought she was joking for a minute. And then i had to call her and find out whats going on. Ultimately, how many of your family members came down with covid . We counted about a dozen family members that came in contact with each other from the original patient zero. So about 12. And chris, are you patient zero . Were you the first person in the family to have it . Yes, maam. And what happened . Well, it really started with me just getting some symptoms. I just got some headaches and some headaches and like i felt nauseous. So i really didnt think much of it. But it turns out i really had it. I was infecting the family members. Must make you feel horrible. I mean, tell me how many people got infected and when you found out you had unknowingly spread it what did you think . Mixed emotions. And sadness. Because, you know, everybody can get infected differently. Yeah. I think what happens this is actually the norm in the border. Which is why i included him in my story because all of a lot of the people go to the community and unwittingly return home and spread the virus to their parents or grandparents. And thats how it spreads quickly. Yeah. I mean, edgar, you talk about the culture and that there are the big family dinners and theyre prized by the family members because the grandparents get a chance to interact with the grandkids. I mean, everybody looks forward to these, but they ended up being really dangerous for your family. Yeah. Well, in my case, it was a road trip, family trip that caused the spread of the virus. It was about six family members and two different cars rotating passengers to houston. Then they met some relatives in the Galveston Area and they also got infected. Thats how it spread. But there is a culture of backyard barbecues in south texas and texas overall. I think thats how a lot of people end up meeting each other. And unknowingly and unwittingly spreading the virus and affecting the elders. I know youre particular i worried about your mom. She had recovered from cancer and then suddenly she came down with this and had to be hospitalized. Two attendants arrived with a stretcher to transport her to another wing where she wouldnt be allowed to have visitors. The beeping sound of the monitors echoed, suddenly i panicked. What if this is the last time i see her alive. Obviously, so many family members have had that experience in these past months, so how are your family members doing . They are recovering slowly. My mother still is requiring artificial oxygen to breathe. But shes home now and shes Getting Better slowly. Edgar what is the upshot of your reporting here . Whats the message for the rest of us . The message is that the pandemic is not over. You know . I think when the government started reopening, there was a collective mindset of lets go back to normal. This is over. We won. And i can attest personally the virus is not done with humanity yet. And chris, how about you, have you gone back to normal . No, maam. I really havent gone out as much. Not at all, to be honest. Im not close to being normal at all. And i mean, in terms of, chris, your family members, are you able to see them . Not well, my immediate family, yes. But my other family members, no i havent seen them at all. This is the first time i have been this close. Initially i have a mask on and we dont see each other unless we have to. Yeah. I mean, look, your family is just a microcosm. A big microcosm because of how many people in your immediate family got infected but it just shows how quickly it spreads, how unknowingly it can spread. Well, Edgar Sandoval and chris, thank you very much for sharing your personal story with us. Thank you for having us. New day continues right now.
