So, according to pia officials, theyre going to be investigating into what caused those technical issues. The other information that we have from the ministry of health where the city of karachi, the largest most populated city of the country is located, is that there could be survivors. A bit of confusion about whether everyone on that plane has died or not. There is hope that there is survivors. Were being told there were five survivors, but because this is a moving situation, it is being difficult to kind of figure out what the death toll or the amount of survivors currently is. Yeah, exactly. We are getting these reports of the possibility of survivors. What is not clear to me at least, at least not yet, based on the video were seeing of this wreckage, not impossible some of the people that may be considered survivors were in the buildings themselves and not the plane, what do we know about that at this point . Well, there are concerns that there will be some casualties from the People Living in the colony. We have been seeing a lot of visuals of ambulances, terrified people limping out of buildings, et cetera. You must understand that the city of karachi has been the most struck city by the coronavirus scare. City had been in lockdown, extreme lockdown for about two months and it is only recently that domestic flights were restarted in the country, only last week. So the flight s running at the moment are running at a low schedule, not many people, and it is the season of eid, so it put a lot of damper this tragedy has put a damper on this situation. Alis alisyn . Sophia saifi, thank you very much. Back here in the u. S. , our other top story, millions of americans expected to hit the beaches and parks for memorial mol d day weekend. But scientists want them to stay part apart. On cnn, dr. Anthony fauci implored americans to wear a mask outside and stay six feet away from everyone else as the u. S. Death toll from coronavirus nears 95,000 people. There is new concern that in some areas of the south theyre showing spikes since they reopened. The mayor of montgomery, alabama, says his city has just one intensive care unit bed left. Cnns rosa flores is live in del rey beach, florida, with more. How is it looking there at this hour . Reporter alisyn, good morning. The rules here are very simple, you can jog, you can walk, and you can swim, but take a look behind me. Youll see that some people are hanging out, which is prohibited. Masks here are not required, but they are recommended if you cant social distance. Now, as you said, dr. Anthony fauci said people can go out. You just have to be smart and safe. Go out, wear a mask, stay six feet away from anyone so you have the physical distancing and go out, go for a run, go for a walk, go fishing. As long as youre not in a crowd and youre not in a situation where you can physically transmit the virus. Thats what a mask is for. And thats what the physical distance. I plan to go out for a nice walk and hikes over memorial day and im going to do it with care, with a mask on. Reporter here in florida, most beaches are open. Except for miamidade and broward, the two most impacted counties. And, john, i want you to take a look behind me. Here in palm beach, the beaches are open. Take a look. Even though a lot of people might have plans to come to the beach, it looks like Mother Nature has a different plan. Its own idea there. Rosa, stay dry if you can. Thanks for being with us. Opening just in time for the holiday weekend, Virginia Beach. Joining me now is Virginia Beach deputy city manager ron williams. Thank you very much for being with us this morning. Lets put up on the screen here what your plans are for the, what, 26 miles of beaches in Virginia Beach. Youre going to have six feet apart unless theyre family, no groups of 10 plus people, no speakers, in large coolers, no alcohol, no tents or groups of umbrellas, no group sports. What is your goal here as you reopen this weekend . Good morning, john. We have the widest beaches on the east coast. And so the goal is that people can come and recreate on the beach by sitting. We have been in exercise and fishing only environment, per the executive orders that Governor Northam issued. Now you can sit on the beach and what we want everyone to do is help stop the spread by making sure theyre maintaining the executive orders for six feet apart and no more than nten in crowd. Something as simple as sitting on a beach will be something that people havent been able to do in some time. Indeed. We also are going to have clean teams at every beach access, so that theyre cleaning the high tech surfaces every two hours and following cdc guidance on that. How you going to enforce these goals or restrictions . Over the past few weeks predominantly through our Law Enforcement when we are in the fishing and exercise only environment. But now we added a layer of about 100, 125 beach ambassadors that are every access. Theyre in bright friendly yellow uniforms and theyre that friendly front line to ask for voluntary compliance for the distancing. What if there isnt voluntary compliance. I ask that, because, look, we know most people are are playing by the rules across the country, but some arent. There are some people who are openly defiant. Absolutely. If we dont get voluntary compliance to it, a beach ambassador, theyll ask for Law Enforcement to come and enforce the executive orders for the distancing. Is there a limit, an upper end of how many people will be allowed on a certain section of beach . Yes. We estimate it is about 1600 per block and our boardwalk area. And part of the way were going to control that is were going to disperse our parking, we have new on Street Parking we dont traditionally utilize and were making sure the parking garages are no more than 50 capacity. What are you hoping or thinking in terms of who will be coming . Will this be primarily Virginia Beach residents, locals, or are you asking or inviting people to come from wherever they can . Mostly drive to markets, john. Yes, residents, of course, but we have seen visitors over the past few weeks and it has been increasing each weekend. Especially after these thunderstorms clear today, and we have some good weather over the next couple of days, we expect that as well. So predominantly midatlantic drive to market. Ron williams from Virginia Beach, we wish you best of luck this weekend, stay safe, stay healthy. I hope you get a chance to sit on the beach a little bit this weekend safely with your family. Appreciate it. Thank you, john. John, joining us now is cnns chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. Great to see you. Lets talk about what is happening in the hardest hit area of the u. S. As we approach this weekend. So the south, there is only one icu bed left, were told, in montgomery, alabama, the mayor there says that that is unsustainable. And so i know you have been telling us for a long time that there will be different outbreaks at different times, no one size fits all, what do you think is happening in places like alabama . Well, we may start we may be seeing these resurgents of patients getting infected again. Were not sure yet because there could be a longer timeline on some of these things as we start to see reopenings. There are some places around the country that if you look at the models that seem like theyre going to be doing okay. A lot of that is because even though theyre reopening, it is a very sort of different reopening, alisyn. It is not a binary thing. Youre open or youre shut. In many places people are doing a good job of still wearing masks, keeping physically distanced like youve been hearing. But, you know, in other places where either you had sort of patients who got exposed several weeks ago and youre just now seeing hospitalizations, smaller communities that dont have as much of the surge capacity, it could still be a problem. And let me show you quickly, there is a various projection going on several different counties around the country right now. Majority of them to be fair looked like theyre even going to be flat or going down overall in terms of cases, but a couple of places like Miamidade County there is a concern. There is around 100 new patients becoming infected every day. They project by june 18th, roughly a month from now, that number will go to nearly 400 people becoming infected. And houston, they say that right now you have i think around 240, 250 people becoming infected, 205, rather, that will go to close to 2500. So it is really, really variable place to place. Why . Why is that so variable . Were talking to the people who are generating these projections. Theyre saying it has to do with are people abiding by physical distancing and mask wearing in these places, as simple as that. There is no therapy or vaccine or anything else in those places that would make that big a difference. It really has to do with human behavior. So, sanjay, we heard dr. Anthony fauci and the cnn town hall last night tell you about how he was going to spend his memorial day weekend outside, hiking, running, if he gets near anyone, hes going to be wearing a mask and staying six feet away. Almost like we all need to be hummen b e human bumper cars with a six foot force field around us wearing masks. What would you say as we approach this weekend . It is interesting, because im here in jrnlg georgia and p talk about georgia being reopen and i talked to the mayor and the mayor says it is still closed, atlanta, the biggest city in georgia. I think it is fine to be outside. We talked a lot about that. I would like to get outside as well. The city for the most part, though, is still so closed. People there is not a lot to do other than go for a run, go for a hike. Not like in many places you can go to crowded bars or crowded restaurants and things like that. It can happen in some places, some institutions are taking this on themselves. But for the most part it still feels kind of shut down in most places. So being outside, great, maybe even even better than being inside. Weather is not supposed to be so good. I think as long as you can maintain the distance, wear a mask, wherever you think youre going to be coming in contact with people, whenever you think it is possible, i carry a mask with me when im running, i dont wear a mask when i run unless i think im going to be near people. People have to use their judgment, i think. The cdc changed some language on their website. And it is causing some confusion about how coronavirus can be most easily spread. So what do we need to know. I can tell you, i was surprised by this. It is getting a lot of attention. It is in every newspaper this morning, this idea that in we know that this can spread through respiratory droplets. But what the cdc guidance says is a subtle change in language. They say that it is primarily spread through respiratory droplets, doesnt seem to be as easily spread through surfaces. I think what is a little bit confusing about that is that we have always known that, that it is respiratory droplets, primarily. Im not sure what drove the change in language. There wasnt some new Research Study or something. We know still still know this virus can live on surfaces, it is a lot less likely to become get someone infected that way. But im not sure why that change to be frank. I think people still need to be careful of surfaces. Still need to disinfect, still need to wash your hands, obviously. The washing of the hands is because you touch a surface and then touch your eyes, nose or your mouth. I dont think anyone should read this new guidance and say, oh, well, all i have to do now is make sure i avoid someone who is coughing or sneezing on me. There are other modes by which this is transmitted, clearly. And it is also clear that asymptomatic spread, two things came out of that, 35 or roughly of people who contract the virus will remain asymptomatic. Completely without symptoms, according to this new guidance. But about 40 of overall spread in the country is generated by those asymptomatic people. So thats still a significant concern. Even if someone is not obviously sick, thats the reason you still wear the mask, thats the reason you still keep the physical distance. You got to assume and behave like everyone might potentially have the virus. Sanjay, im glad you cleared up that issue with surfaces. It has been confusing. Ive been confused by what exactly the cdc was doing with that. Another number the cdc put out overnight is guidance on the mortality rate. Which they now say is. 4 or estimate they say, perhaps a low end estimate of a. 4 mortality rate. Thats a lot lower than we have seen. It is a lot lower than we have seen. I will point out it is still, you know, four times higher, for example, than flu, which is. 1 . Just to give people a little bit of context, they hear the numbers, they think thats it is low, but if you start to apply this to large populations of people, thats where the real concern comes in. I think when you really drill down, there is a couple of things that jump out, one is that if you dont end up needing to go to the hospital, if you dont really get that sick from this, youre going to obviously do a lot better. But if you end up getting hospitalized or end up in an icu, your chance of survival then goes dramatically down, which is, you know, obviously tough to say. Thats what were seeing here. It really ends up being bifur cated. A lot of diseases it is more linear. You have two distinct populations. It also breaks down distinctly, guys, by age. People 65 and older, mortality rate can be 10 to 15 times higher than people who are younger. Sanjay, great having you here. Helping us understand what we have been seeing all morning long. Have a safe holiday weekend. You too, guys. Thanks. All right, they are the human guinea pigs in the global race to develop a coronavirus vaccine. Volunteers willing to take a risk and test it. New developments in the race to develop a coronavirus vaccine. The Human Vaccine trial in Oxford University is now moving to the next phase of its trial. Cnns Clarissa Ward live in oxford where shes spoken to some of the volunteers for these trials and, clarissa, these people really are human guinea pigs. Reporter they really are. And, you know, honestly, what was so striking, john, is that they see this as a sense of duty. Theyre excited to be participating in a study like this one, which as you said has Just Announced new human trials coming up, 10,000 people will be involved in those trials. Take a look. It is the Oldest University in the English Speaking world. But Oxford University may soon be better known for taking a big step forward in the global race to develop a vaccine against covid19. Graduate student dan macateer is one of more than a thousand volunteers who signed up to be subjects in the first round of human trials. All participants had to be between 18 and 55. And in excellent health. Half were given the experimental covid19 vaccine, and half were given a control vaccine. I, like all of us, felt very much impotent and powerless in the middle of the pandemic. So i felt this sounds like maybe i can contribute in some way. Reporter mother of two Lydia Guthrie had her inoculation three weeks ago. I did have a few moments beforehand of thinking, whoa, you know, i might be injected with this experimental vaccine, that sounds like something out of a Science Fiction film. But were all having to make decisions about risk. Reporter guthrie says she experienced some side effects, similar to a mild flu. Next week she will go back for her first blood test. We have an ediary system, so every day i get an email as a prompt to log in and complete the short questionnaire about my health and wellbeing. I also complete a questionnaire about my daily activities. Reporter the vaccines developers have made some bold predictions, saying it could be mass produced as early as september. But some experts have cast doubt on that optimism, pointing to test results on monkeys. While none of the vaccinated animals suffered from pneumonia after being injected with covid19, they did still contract the virus. Professor Adrienne Hill says the data has been misconstrued. Were very confident that the result in those monkeys is as good as we could have hoped for. Reporter is the goal of this vaccine to create immunity or is it simply to prevent the worst symptoms . So i think it will be one or the other. Doesnt work at all or it works against infection and disease. Thats how vaccines work. Reporter macateer concedes he will be disappointed if the vaccine doesnt work. If you are part of something and you have given it your time and it has been a subject of a bit of anxiety, of course, because there are risks attached, of course you want your vaccine to succeed. But fundamentally we just need a vaccine to succeed, or even better multiple vaccines to succeed. Reporter in the end, the real race is against the virus. And time. So interesting to hear from these people, clarissa. Tell us more about the next round of trials and who exactly will be tested. Reporter so this is interesting, john in the first round as you saw, it was people between 18 and 55. Now theyre going to be testing above 70 years old and theyre going to be looking at children potentially between the ages of 5 and 12. But some experts have said that we should be a little cautious about popping the champagne just yet. It simply is still very early. This is moving at a really quick pace, those two subjects who we interviewed, they havent even had their test results yet and already youre talking about testing another 10,000 people, so some people saying, well, lets put the brakes on a little bit and see what the data really shows. Let the science work its course. Clarissa, interesting look. Thank you for being with us. We have breaking news this morning, a commercial jet carrying more than 100 people has crashed in pakistan. We do have more information now on our breaking news. A Pakistan International Airlines Flight with more than 100 people on board has crashed in the city of karachi. Officials say the flight was headed from lahore to karachi when it crashed just before it was scheduled to land. Were told the pilot did make a may day call, reporting a technical problem before the plane went down. Joining us now is cnn transportation analyst mary schiavo. I know youve been looking at the videos that are circulating online and what have you been able to determine . Well, one of the most interesting videos i have found that is circulating again, it was posted, cant verify the source, but it is of this plane coming in for what looks like the crash landing and you can see that the wings are straight and level, you can hear engine, you can hear engines in the background, it almost sounds like there is cooling down, in laymans terms, not producing full power. The wings are straight and level and you can see the landing gear down. It is impossible to tell for a picture if the pilot is in the cockpit had the indication the gear was actually locked into place. But initial reports were that on the first attempt it land, the pilot reported some problems with the landing gear. Along with mechanical problems and then on the second, after the go around occurred, reported problems with an engine or engines, having lost an engine or engines. So there are lots of causes for that. Bird strikes, engine difficulty, no fire, there is no fire coming from the engines on the plane. So it doesnt look like an uncontained engine failure, but thats very interesting footage that the wings are straight. Yes. And makes it all the more mysterious. Can you tell how close to the ground the plane was when it lost control . Yes. Well, when it when it lost contact with air traffic control, it was 525 feet from the ground, so it was very close to the ground, so this footage, if accurate, would be reporting some of this flights last moments, and would suggest indeed as the pilot are reported to have said to the controller that they had engine problems. It looks like the plane had lost its power and was coming in pretty fast still for reduced power, but straight and level. So it would have at least from this footage looked like it flew right into the ground. Were trying to figure out if there are any survivors as well as any casualties on the ground. This is a crowded neighborhood where it crashed and we see apartment buildings. But if it was having trouble at 525 feet, does that tell you that there could be survivors on the plane . Well, you know survive a crash, every year the statistics go up for it. And there have been cases where a few people, where you have an impact, you know, starting with the nose, where you havent fallen sort of flat from the sky like a leaf, where you have impacted the ground with some forward motion. There have been survivors in the tail. But here with the fire that looks highly, highly unlikely. Everyone can always hope and pray for survivors, but it looks really unlikely in this case because of the vast amount of fire on the plane. It is completely broken apart. There is one shot circulating of one of the engines, which is very interesting and this is this is a really long shot, but when you have a crash with engines turning, you see the fan blades and the turbine blades are bent and destroyed and they arent in this picture. Perhaps the other engine was still running. There are a lot of shots that give interesting includes cl in internet. We appreciate your analysis as always. Thank you very much. So thats what were watching for over the next few minutes. Our next guest is a doctor on the front lines of this pandemic who has seen, of course, how devastating this has been on Family Members of her patients. And shes just written an open letter it the Family Members in which she apologizes. Joining us is dr. Daniela lamas, a Critical Care doctor at brigham and Womens Hospital in boston. Doctor, great to see you. What do you have to apologize for . Yes, so the content really of this piece which i wrote as a letter was inspired by or sparked by my feelings about our visitor policy. And about two months ago now my hospital along with hospitals throughout the country changed our rules so that we cant really have any visitors, except at the very extreme, end of life or at the birth. They made sense at the time and two months on and were thinking and ive begun to think it is time for us it reevaluate the policies. So i feel as though inadvertently and with the best of intentions we have done harm to our patients and their families due to these policies and i wanted to let them know that we feel that. What could you are done differently . Those policies were put in place to protect the Family Members from contracting covid19 themselves. And so what could you have done differently . Im not sure really that we could have done anything differently at the outset. I think that safety was our primary goal. But with that goal to protect came some sacrificing of humanity and we apologize for so many things that are not our fault that we couldnt have done differently. I say im sorry to a family when a patient died, even if we have done everything that humans could possibly do. And so this apology really was in that vain, was acknowledging a loss. Im just going to read a portion of your open letter to the families. You say, i hope i held the ipad still enough so that it didnt shake while you were saying the things you would regret not saying. I wanted you it feel as though you were alone in that room, to forget for a moment that your surreal farewell was being facilitated by a doctor you had never met who was also thinking of her own parents and hoping the seal on her n95 was tight enough. So, now, in hindsight, with the wisdom that you and the hospital have gained, you would allow Family Members in to that room at the end of life . In hindsight, perhaps at those times, the time where there was only one Family Member allowed or no families at all in some hospitals where were holding these ipads and biohazard bags, perhaps thats the only thing we could do to keep everybody safe. And im not saying our policy at that time were a mistake, but now as we begin to ease to some new degree of normality in our daily lives, i think in hospitals and in mine particularly we started to relax some policies and i think it is time for us to really focus in on how we can bring people back. Because theyre not just visitors, often Family Members are really an essential part of our patients care. I mean, this has been one of the particularly tragic elements of this incredibly tragic story. And that is that people have died alone. People have died alone and as you point out, so well in that letter, they have to say their final farewells through some sort of device, which, you know, can obviously feel inhuman. You say at times you felt caught in a dystopian bureaucratic nightmare. That does sound horrible. I know youre not throwing your hospital under the bus, they were trying to keep everybody safe. But do you think that Going Forward since people are still getting sick you will see more Family Members at the bedside . I think we will see more Family Members at the bedside Going Forward. Already in my hospital we shifted from one person at the very end of life to two people now, up to sort of 72 or so anticipated hours, clearly we can never prognosticate that specifically before at a persons end of life. So there is more flexibility in that, three days is flexible. We cant know exactly how things will pass. It really means when somebody is very sick, they can have a couple of Family Members each day. And i think that that in our hospital is a significant shift. And it points to an increasing flexibility as we understand that at each juncture, there is a tradeoff and that balance should shift over time. Have you heard from any of your patients Family Members. As a result of this piece . I have not. And, you know, i think i wrote at the end that im not sure they would even recognize my name, sort of that was, you know, a writein kind of tool. Also it was true. I think that we have been so disjointed from patients from their families, you know, shift work makes us disjointed to begin with, but not knowing people, not seeing them face to face, youre a voice on the phone, people are terrified. I havent heard from them. I hope people who read it, whether or not i cared for their loved ones, found it meaningful. Dr. Daniela lamas, we appreciate you giving us your firsthand experience and people can read your letter in the new york times. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you. Hes very happy with the lineup and rundown that meredith put together for us today. Youre right. He looks very serene, not normally how Television Producers look, but he looks that way. Our congratulations to them. So in difficult times people turn to the arts for comfort and a sense of normalcy. Artists and musicians can impact us in ways that others cannot. In that spirit, yoyo ma, one of the most famous is classical musicians, will be performing the bach suites this sunday. Joining us now is yoyo ma. Thank you very much for coming on this morning. It is an honor to have you on. Hi, john. Great to see you. Congratulations to miles who looks very cute. He does look very cute. Listen, one of the things we cant do during this pandemic is give people a hug. If there were ever a time when people needed a physical hug, it would be now. We cant do it. In a way, what youre trying to do this weekend is give people a musical hug. Explain. Well, i think music is actually a physical activity. It moves air and i think music can caress. So it can hug. I think because the air moves and you feel you are touched. Literally, touched by the air that moves around you and so i think it is something that gives comfort. And human comfort. And so i think music actually was invented to fulfill certain needs of people and so this, what im trying to do is just have give an offering of music to for comfort, for connection, and to create the community that we cant actually have right now physically, but we can do it through music. This will be quite an operation for you this sunday. Youre going into a studio, wgbh, a Television Studio in boston, it is going to be clean and empty for two days before you go in. Youre going in all by yourself. How is this going to work . I think im not going to see a living soul. Im walking into a studio that has been that nobody has been in for days. And basically ill open the cello case, and play. And then after im after i finished, im going to leave the room, so there will be absolutely no human contact. And the folks at gbh and hrb are fantastic people. And they work so hard to make sure that this is absolutely safe, and so were following all the sort of regulations. But were able to do something, especially during memorial day weekend. And i think sunday afternoon is a good time to, you know, to give a message of comfort and maybe a message of consolation for people that have are mourning, but also to give a little bit of hope. Now, im sure you must have canceled dozens and dozens of performances over, you know, hundreds of countries and thousands of continents during this pandemic. How have you been navigating personally these last two months . Well, one thing that changed and this is the personal part is my normal has always been to travel and i have never been home for so long and so being home is a new experience and that part has been wonderful. However, just reading the news and finding out about who has been affected i think has led me to try and to use whatever i do, which is music, to do zoom calls, to, you know, hospital rooms, or to classrooms, for graduations, for patients, for health workers, who are, you know, and so im trying to do this kind of work through the medium of, you know, technology and to try and reach people. And i think thats, you know, thats what we can do. And i think everybody is trying to do what they can do to help. And i think thats what gives me hope and energy. You have chosen you have chosen bach to play on sunday, which i know is special for you. I know also it encompasses just the wide range of emotions were all feeling right now.
