Very druk drg that they want. The president is 73 years old, clinically obese, he has coronary artery disease, hes being treated for high clo lester ral. But hes been able to selfdiagnosis or ask the white house consider for an unproven treatment. More than that, why is he so proud of it . Why does he flaunt not wearing a mask . Why did he brag about shaking hands as long as he did . How are people who dont have a team of physicians attending to them going to be affected by this . Also breaking overnight, a 30day ultimatum from the president threatening to pull an all funding from the w. H. O. Citing they didnt do enough in december. But the president himself said in january, the United States greatly appreciates chinas efforts and transparency and he went on to thank chinas president. All right. Joining us now, we have cnn chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta and cnn medical analyst jonathan reiner. A proffer at George Washington university and was tic chadick s cardiologist. Dr. Reiner, im going to start with you because you were dick cheneys doctor because you understand how it works when a power person, a president or Vice President wants a drug that may or may not be proven . What is the protocol here, the fact that President Trump wanted to try it and the white house doctor said, well, okay if you if you want it, we can give it a shot. Good morning. I dont think it really worked that way. I think that what almost certainly happened is the president had a significant exposure to the virus, maybe multiple exposures since we know at least two people, his valet and ms. Kacatikatie miller test positive in a short period of time. So his exposure to the virus and the likelihood that he might contract is what this was based on. I dont think he went to the president , sean connelly, and said give me the drug. I think this was a detailed conversation. In his brief note last night, dr. Connelly mentioned that he had reached out to subject thought leaders around the down the ask about this. I think this was a very carefully considered move. But whats interesting to me is that this shows how concerned they were about the president contracting the virus. The other interesting thing to take about this drug despite the fact theres no Data Available yet think there well soon have some data, hes been taking it for ten days. Both of the major Clinical Trials which have evaluated this had only used it for four or five days. So why is he still taking the drug . Thats another unanswered question. We also dont know if Vice President pence is taking it. Right. Look, i think theres a bigger thing going on here, which is, first raufrl let of all, let me moment. The president isnt just taking hydroxychloroquine, hes bragging about it and preening about it. He was so excited to spring it on the press. So lets watch this moment. I was just waiting to see your eyes light up when i said this, but, you know, when i announce this. Ive taken it for about a week and a half now and im still here. Who cares what the presss faces look like when the president made that announcement . Only the president cares because its not about the science, its about owning the libs or making a statement. Its part and parcel of Something Else weve seen, the president proudly not wearing masks. The president bragging about not shaking hands. The president musing about injecting disinfectants. Lets play some more sound of that. Thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work, some of them go to work, but they get better. You cant be a politician and shake hands. When i come in when i leave ill be shaking hands with people. They want to say hello, hug you, kiss you, i dont care. You have to do that. I think wearing a face mask as a great president , prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens, i dont know, somehow i dont see it for myself. And then i see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute r, one minute, is there a way question do Something Like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Could be the testings, frankly, overrated. Maybe it is overrated. The point is, sanjay, that when youre the president , you cant just be concerned about your own health. You have to be concerned about the Nations Health here. And theres an impact to what he says and does. Its terribly irresponsible, it sets a bad example, and maybe even dangerous. It is dangerous, as people actually going out and doing some of these things. I think, you know, when it comes to, for example, the mask wearing, we now know that there are people required to wear masks. He still doesnt wear one. But that may have contributed to the exposure jonathan was talking about. Im sure it did contribute to the exposure. Had people been wearing masks, they probably wouldnt be in this situation. If, in fact, the president has had a significant exposure and now theyre a little panicked trying to figure out is there anything question do, its importa important to keep in mind several weeks, not months, theyve been talking about ways to mitigate that exposure. That the was not happening at the white house. I think its interesting with this hydroxychloroquine, dr. Connelly writes in his letter that we balance the evidence for and against hydroxychloroquine. There isnt any evidence to use it, as, again, jonathan mentioned, there is a study thats going to be forthcoming looking at it as a potential pro profa lax sis. That data is not there yet. It could be dangerous as a treatment and the president has underlying Heart Disease which may make him even more at risk. Again, i dont relish the decision or sort of the discussion, i think the president has had about this. I dont know how that discussion took place. Im not sure who prompted that discussion. But this is setting a really bad example. There will be people who go out and run for this medication that hoard it. There are actually people who need it for legitimate purposes. We saw this last time he talked about hydroxychloroquine. It is a complete unnecessary and potentially dangerous distraction. But, dr. Reiner, were talking about the president of the United States. By definition, his health affects all of us. And there are side effects to hydroxychloroquine. You dont just take this on a lark. There are i was just mentioning to john that i have a friend who took hydroxychloroquine a few years ago because she was going on a trip and would be exposed possibly to malaria. She said it caused the craziest dreams, horrible sleep, and i read that some of the side effects are mood swings. And so how would that not be affecting the president of the United States judgment . There are also psychological consequences or emotional of this drug. Right. I think well, i think the last thing we need is this president to have mood swings. But the drugs most consequential side effect is a malignant cardiac arrhythmia that can kill you. Now, the white house doesnt doesnt really use the kinds of rules that we use out in the community. They have access 24hour access to their patient and they can do things that docs in the community cant do. So they have ways of actually mitigating that risk. I agree with sanjay completely. This drug is unproven and the data that we have suggest that it doesnt work or can be harmful. So no one in this country should use it in the manner the president is using it. But the white house medical unit obviously made a calculated decision that they considered his risk of taking the drug to be lower than his risk of potentially contracting the virus. And my calculations, i think his rirv risk based on all of the comorbidities you mentioned in the leadin, he has a 20 to 50 of dying from this virus should he contract it and they most certainly did a calculus and felt that the odds favored him taking it without any clear efficacy data to support that. Very unusual, but it does speak to how worried they were about him last week. Thats a separate issue, right . How scared he actually is of getting sick. And we know hes a germaphobe here. We knew he blew up at people behind the scenes when he found out people in the white house were sick. Sanjay, we also know something at least about the president s health. Hes a large man, as nancy pelosi whos not a doctor, mind you, nancy pelosi pointed out last night to anderson. Listen to this. Hes our president and i would rather he not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists, especially in his age group and in his, shall we say, weight group . But morbidly obese they say. So i think its not a good idea. Now, i understand, sanjay, hes only clinically obese, not morbidly obese, but hes overweight. As you have noted now for some time, there are issues with his heart that should raise questions. Yeah, i mean, and i think this is, again, the point that jonathan is making, that he is a vulnerable patient in this regard. Given his age, given his preexisting conditions of Heart Disease, obesity is a significant risk factor for people having worse outcomes with this infection. We saw this in all the data coming out of china and in europe and now the United States. So, yes, this is this is i mean, and so maybe that was the reason they said, look, well do whatever we can to try and, you know, see if we can prevent him from getting the disease by even using an unproven medication in this case. Youre absolutely right. So i dont know how they calculated it, how they sort of made this decision. I dont think its the right decision, i dont think he should be taking this medication. Again, i think the most Important Message is probably to everyone else out there that this is an unproven, potentially dangerous medication. The president should not be taking it. You should not be taking it. Studies are stig ll ongoing as p profa lax sis medication. Well see what the studies show. But he should not be taking it and other people should not either. I understand why youre doing that warning, sanjay, because a couple weeks ago when the president suggested that maybe people should inject bleach because maybe that would do some inside cleaning right. The calls to hotlines, dr. Reiner, spiked. The calls to medical crisis, you know, overdose hotlines in perms of peop terms of people asking if they should take bleach and consider drinking bleach went up. Now it just stands to reason that doctors are going to be fielding calls today about hydroxychloroquine and is this something that prophylactically other americans you think should or will start trying. Well, i hope not. We know from pharmacy data actually from two months ago when the president first mentioned this that a few hours after he spoke about this prescriptions spiked 40 fold. So his words have consequences. So i do expect people are going to be asking about this. But to what the president said about Frontline Health care workers are taking this, there isnt a single Frontline Worker that i know who is taking this drug. Not a single we have. I have, just to be clear, we have spoken to people who have been treating people with coronavirus who have tried it and also have prescribed it some time ago. Early on, i will say, before some of these studies and whatnot came back. And the studies are what matters here. I also think look, im not going to bring you into this discussion, youre doctors and scientists. I think theres a big part of this discussion that has nothing to do with science and the president telegraphed that yesterday when he said he wanted to see the look on the reporters faces. Hes bringing this up beyond medicine is. That to distract from the 90,000 dead people on the screen . Is it to distract from an expector general report or purge . I dont know. Well talk about that later. Sanjay, the who, the president sent a letter giving a 30day ultimatum to pull all u. S. Funding permanently. Among the things hes critical of is transparency in china which has not been strong, issues early on with china in reporting coronavirus and the spread. However, as we have noted before, the president himself praised china for its transparency in january. Right. And so its one of these situations where i think that theres going to probably need to be a significant postmortem, if you will, regarding the w. H. O. And what happened specifically with china. Because i agree, you know, weve learned about things late out of china, much later than we should have. Weeks late and we know that weeks make a huge difference in the midst of a pandemic. I think the question is, is now the right time to be really going after the w. H. O. . Because were still in the middle of this thing. Other countries are very dependent, probably more dependent on the w. H. O. Than we are, countries that have disenfranchised health care systems, theyre going to need that and were going to need the data coming out of those countries in order to best sort of, you know, have an effective effort against this pandemic. So ultimately, you know, i think the idea of punishing the w. H. O. Right now probably also ends up punishing us. An infection anywhere is an infection everywhere. And the w. H. O. Still, in addition to the Clinical Trials theyre doing, as best vision on these countries around the world. They have you know, they have not been stellar on this, as we all know. They declared this late. We declared this a pandemic earlier than the w. Hoh. O. Did. But everyone in the world needs a w. H. O. At this point. Okay. We really appreciate all of your expertise helping us understand where we are. Thank you very much. My pleasure. New this morning, the cdc is warning of a rise in a mysterious inflammatory condition in children weeks after they get coronavirus. 8yearold boy went into cardiac arrest. He was saved by his older brother who performed cpr. He was later found to have coronavirus antibodies. Joining us now is jadens father. Thank you very much for being with us. The first thing i want to ask you is how is jaden, 8 years old, doing this morning . He has for the past four or five days home, he has come a very far way. He came home, he wasnt saying much. He wasnt able to walk. We used to take him to the restroom. Yesterday jaden was able to get up on his own, use the restroom. Hes also able to bring out more words strongly. I know as a parent im really interested in speaking with you and parents of kids everywhere want to know what they should look for here. Because this really is a new concern. And you say jaden had a fever for a few days, this is about a month ago. It went away and then what happened . Right after the fever, he started to have diarrhea. Now, the diarrhea was a attributed from his pediatrician because he wasnt eating. And at that point we thought he would have come around. We start to give him peda light, which was advised to us, and we also tried to start jello and crackers, give it to him. We saw him coming around, but that didnt really happen. He eventually end up into cardiac arrest. And it was his brother whos a scout who used cpr to save him, thats a whole other story. Kudos to you and your whole family for raising two such wonderful sons on that. But walk us through how this affected jadens body from the time he went into cardiac arrest through his stay in the hospital till now. I would say he has lost a lot of weight. And going into the cardiac arrest, im sure that are was a scary situation for him. He doesnt know right now what really went on that day. We havent spoke much about it. But today at home he is very small, we can say he lost a good 20 pounds out of this. Back up his strength is coming back and his voice is coming back and thats the most important for us right now. Thats what we worry about. His heart is of concern because we were told that from the doctors that he was diagnosed with something called rugada syndrome. I dont know the detail of it but its something with your heart getting overworked and would go into an irregular beat. And as a result, they have implanted a defib brew lator which will help him if he ever get into this condition again. Youre like me when doctors talk to me about things my kids have, i just nod and smile, i dont understand half the words there. Some parents have talked about rashes in their kids, other symptoms that come about from this inflammatory syndrome. Have you seen any of that . You know, interestingly in jadens case we saw none of this. And thats thats the thats the point the situation where we have docs questions. Why he doesnt have none of this. Because thats those are some of the typical signs that theyre seeing. But in jadens case, the only sign we had was the initial fever, then the fever went away. So he never had things together. He had the fever, it went away. Then his diarrhea came, and, you know, its like a single condition every time. So its not the typical virus signs that we were seeing. And, again, he never tested positive for having coronavirus or covid19, but after the fact he does have the antibodies, which indicates that somewhere along the way he had it, correct . Yeah. And thats thats what we are concerned about. He tested positive for the antibody. I dont know the accuracy of the Antibody Test. Yesterday we took him to his pediatrician and we requested a second Antibody Test just to, i guess, just to be satisfied. And its also interesting because this all started happening to you and your family a month ago. This was before, i think, we all became much more aware of this inflammatory syndrome of some of the risks for kids. Small numbers of kids, but a real risk for kids particularly in the new york area. What do you want parents to know about this . I would say take every signs seriously. I believe that pediatrician are all aware that kids in new york are being affected and dont let things be dont let it go. The other thing i will say that jaden older brother who is part of boy scout, he have that and learning cpr is something that i would like to say its not just for people in the medical field, anyone can learn cpr. Im also getting an annual refresher of cpr every year. So if you dont know cpr, volunteer in boy scout or join boy scout. Its all good stuff. We all should know cpr, its great training. I want to show people the video of jaden leaving the hospital which i think was a big moment, i know, for your whole family. The aplauss, plau applause. It was a tough go for him. Its nice to see the outpouring of emotion for him. I want to say thank you to the doctors at quinn hospital who were all really good. They advise me through this. What i like with the doctors, i like the collaboration they were having discussing all the conditions that they were seeing from jaden. And also what i learned was the collaboration within the tristate area with doctors. And i think the collaboration and using the data thats available is what making the doctors because this is new, its helping them to make better decision. So i want to say thank you to the doctors. Thank you so much for being with us this morning. Were so glad that jaden is back at home. Our best to all of you. Thank you very much, john. Alisyn. Lets talk about reopening the country. Connecticut is the last state in the union to remain closed. But tomorrow they, too, will begin the process of reopening. What exactly will that look like . Well, Connecticut Governor ned lamont joins us now. Morning, governor. Hey, good morning, alisyn. I wouldnt necessarily say last state in the union to remain closed. Were one of the few states in this region that never actually closed down manufacturing, never closed down outside construction, always kept our parks and beaches open. But we are on wednesday going to have an opening of sorts for some things that had been previously closed, Outdoor Dining, thats important. Main street retail, they were only available for pickup before, now theyll be available for in person as well. Thats interesting and i appreciate that clarification because what we had red is that massachusetts and connecticut were the last two states to engage in that kind of partial reopening that youre talking about. But its good to know that the other things had never actually gone away. As a resident of your fair state, i have some specific questions for you. Do you think that governors, yourself included and municipalities across the country, have done a good enough job of explaining to regular citizens whats expected of them as they reengage . For instance, i keep hearing a lot of confusion from neighbors and people about when theyre supposed to wear the masks. Are you supposed to wear it every time you go outside, if you go to the beach from you go anywhere, or when . I think weve been clear, but lets face it, alisyn, this is a pandemic thats changing every day and theres a lot of anxiety out there. So ive had to do a lot of communication, which is why im with you today. Look, when it comes to the mask, we could not be clearer. When you go inside, when you go into that store, when you go into that grocery store, youre required to wear a mask and so is the and so is the employee. Thats just what the rules of the road are. But as you point out from youre walking along a beach or walking to the park, youre outside, theres not a lot of people around you, you can keep your social distance, use the mask at your own discretion then. Restaurants, governor, how will they be able to survive at limited capacity . I think people they are excited about the outdoor venues opening, but whether its time for the indoor venues to open, how will they be able to stay in business if they can only operate at, say, 25 capacity . Were taking baby steps. Were one of the first states to allow Outdoor Dining here in new england, and i think thats important. You want to get the customers comfortable. You want them to maybe maybe theyre hesitant, they dont want to go back to a restaurant at all. Maybe theyll go back if its outside only, waiters wearing a mask, waiters wearing gloves. Maybe a month from now theyll feel more comfortable about going inside assuming ougall th protocols have been followed. I talked to my hairdresser last night. Shes upset. She had been hoping that she would be open this work and finding out that you pushed salons back to june 1st has really caused a huge kind of cata alcoholicat klis i am in her busines offa alcoholism. So whats your thinking there . I hope shes one of the companies that got the paycheck protection zbloons aloans. Shes not. She has tried. She says that wells fargo every day for the past two months has sent her the same form letter saying youre request is in process, your request is in process. She has not been able to get that and shes in dire straits. Well, thats why well be one of the first states in the country or first states in the region, i should say, to allow hair salons and barber shops to open. May 20th, which was coming up, we were surrounded by a fair number of employees of the hair salons and barber shops who said i cant do it now. I cant get the childcare that i need. I want more time for my salon to prepare to open. So we said, all right, lets put it off ten days, that gives you a little more time to prepare, make sure the stylists can get the childcare that he or she needs, and give the salon operator a little more time to get the cleaning disinfectants, other things that they may need. So its ten days, well still be one of the first in the region to open. Have you calculated how many Small Businesses you think wont be able to ever kind of get back on their feet after this . I havent calculated it, but im afraid there could be a sea change. Well see whether people feel comfortable going back to restaurants. Maybe there will be more takeout. The world will change. Im really cautious about what were going to do with colleges, a number of colleges around the country are saying no residential living next year, this coming fall. Were trying to make sure that we dont have to have that happen. But think you are going to see some fundamental changes. Yeah. I mean, obviously connecticut is home to Yale University as well as many other colleges of note. What is their plan . Have you heard from them about what they plan do in the fall . A little bit, yeah. Actually the former president of yale led our education reopening committee. And that team was amazing. The folks from uconn, trinity, all the Higher Education as well as parents in academics. What then said was, look, community college, go back now, thats more like a business. Graduate students, probably they go back next. They can probably socially distance a little easier than undergraduate. If you ever saw animal house, you know what i mean. And then well have to make up our mind in august regarding september. Id like to think those resident halls will be open, and we can get back to normal. Normal meaning everybodys going to be tested kbr thbefore they k to college and theyll have to be a place for quarantine if they test positive. Thank you so much as connecticut tries to get back to some level of normalcy. Thank you for your time this morning. Thanks, alisyn. John. Developing this morning, new details about the terror attack at a Pensacola Naval air station last december. The fbi says the saudi military trainee who killed three sailors coordinated and planned the attack with al qaeda. We have the latest developments in the is a huge development, evan. Reporter thats right, alisyn. It took several months, but the fbi was finally able to get into the iphone belonging to this attacker. And what they found was that he was planning this attack with al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula as far back at 2015. Thats when, according to the fbi, they have communications indicating that he was talking about a special operation. He joined the saudi military at that time and he continued communicating with them all the way up to the night before he carried out this attack. The attorney general and the fbi director talked about this. Take a listen. The phones contained information previously unknown to us that definitively establishes his significant ties to al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The evidence weve been able to develop from the killers devices shows that the pensacola attack was the brutal culmination of years of planning and preparation by a long time aqap associate. Some questions about the vetting about getting this man, before he was able to come into the United States to train at Naval Air Station pensacola. Alisyn. So, evan, Law Enforcement is frustrated that apple didnt help more with trying to get into the attackers phone. But, as you point out, apple says that they did actually participate in the investigation. So whats the truth here . Right. Initially, the company was able to provide some of the icloud information that the fbi was seeking as a result of a courtorder subpoena. But theres only so far that apple was able to good because of the Encryption Technology on their phones. And thats what has the fbi and the attorney general very frustrated. Theyre asking for legislation now to require these companies, including apple, to be able to provide a backdoor, so to speak, to these devices. Ill read you a statement from apple in response to these accusations. They say, quote, a backdoor will make every device vulnerable to bad actors who threaten our National Security and the Data Security of our customers. Theres no such thing as a backdoor just for the good guys and the American People do not have to choose between weakening encryption and effective investigations. Obviously, alisyn, this is something thats going to, i think, keep going for the next few months and perhaps years because this is a serious National Security issue and it does bump up against privacy rights of americans. Evan, thank you very much for explaining all of that. John. 90,000 americans dead from coronavirus. There are political charges being hurled every day. Though the majority of americans consistently say they are not yet comfortable returning to their regular routines, the president continues to attack largely democratic governors for their pace in easing restrictions. Governors whose polls show are wildly popular right now. Bakari sellers, he is the author of the new book my vanishing country. We see what youve been doing or not doing. Vanishing chin. Vanishing face, hidden behind your giant and very impressive beard. Just one more way youre impressive, bakari. I spent the weekend reading your boo book and i loved it. Well get to that in a moment. I want to ask you about the politics of this, because the president is clearly betting in someway that attacking governors, largely democratic governors, for not opening or easing restrictions as quickly as the president would like is good politics. Whats the reality . Well, i think that the president s going to delve into culture wars and pick these battles until he finds one that works. But i will have to say, i am not going to fall down along partisan lines on this issue, because governors such as larry hogan in maryland, Charlie Baker in massachusetts have doniomae s yomans work. While the president may not follow science, im hoping that the governors and mayors of these large cities are. What were seeing is that eric garcetti, gavin newsom are doing a hell of a job leading their great states. Were seeing andrew cuomo doing a great job. Were seeing mayor Steve Benjamin in columbia do a great job. The president of the United States simply doesnt believe in facts, he doesnt believe in science, and as we found out yesterday, hes taking hydroxychloroquine like tick tacks. And so we cant have a lot of faith in that. But, as you know, President Trump also doesnt really deal in details. So one of the things that hes good at is sort of this simple message, the slogan. And so isnt he being more identified with lets get the country back . Lets reopen . Everybody wants to go back to work. Lets reopen, than democrats. And in that way, since this is not a partisan issue, everybody wants their old life back. Republicans, democrats, everybody wants their old normal. So is he winning in that way of making it seem simple and that hes on the side of getting life back to normal . Well, i think that thats the argument hes trying to make. He wants to be the person whose saying, reopen america. The problem with that, alisyn, and you guys always bring a tear to my eye, its the best show on tv because you Pay Attention to the human side of whats going on, that you guys talk about those lives that are lost. The president , he can say reopen all he wants, he can try to delve us into culture war, but can he not erase the fact that 90,000 americans died on his watch. 36 Million People are unemployed on his watch. And the reason being is because he doesnt believe in detail, because he doesnt believe in science, because he doesnt believe in fact. And barack obama laid a pandemic playbook out for him even Mitch Mcconnell will acknowledge that, one that he has shredded, torn up and thrown out the window. He may have a good message on reopen, it may poll well. However, what he cannot overcome is 90,000 dead and 36 million out of a job. But heres the thing, he doesnt poll well. We always say Everyone Wants things to be open, its just not true. The polling tells us the exact opposite. I mean, i put this up on the screen here, we asked people if theyre comfortable returning to their daily routines . And may 7th through the 10th only 41 said yes, 58 said no. Its ticked up slightly from april, but basically within the margin of error there. And if you ask about popularity of the nations governors, again, the governors who have led these states who have had restrictions in place, they are beginning to raise them, the popularitys wildly high. You know, dewine, cuomo, newsom, northam, whitmer, there are these protests with armed guards out there or armed people everyday, its a fraction. Shes had a 72 approval rating. Its just not clear to me that theres this giant National Unanimous outcry for reopening. I think its a false choice, by the way. Its not reopen versus stay at home forever. Its lets get out and do it safely. But i think youre kind of missing the point, because i do not believe that donald trump messages for most of america. I think he message sports 35 , you which are his base. Hes going to have 62 million americans come out and vote for him. They there are. I think hes messaging for these individuals who all of the sudden believe that theyre rosa parks by going down to detroit, michigan, and protesting and doing squats outside of state capitols, et cetera. So he is not speaking to those individuals who believe that we have to follow the science, that we have to take our Public Health serious. Because i agree with you, that is it is a false choice. But donald trump is very good at one thing, which is giving red meat to the base of the Republican Party which is why he excels with that type of politics. Well, also i would say, john, and to contrast your facts that you keep throwing around and your stats, i mean, as former speaker of the house Newt Gingrich once famously told me on our proper gram, ill let you deal with the statisticians all day long, ill take ow peophow feel. On that front i understand what johns saying, are people comfortable going out to a restaurant . No. Do people long for their old life . Yes, they do. Do you worry at all that President Trump say peeling to his base, some of the independents or whomever, democrats, who think that his message is just more of a sort of cheerleading one than the, you know, doctors who keep whacking their fingers at whacking wagging their fingers at us. People have to take donald trump seriously. I know thats hard sometimes with the inability to talk about this issue with some coherent nature. But you is it hahave to take hi seriously. I have to preface all of my comments that i thought Hillary Clinton was going to be the next president of the United States and we saw how that worked. Democrats, we have to message and Say Something other than were not donald trump. But i still do not bluff that hes going to get over the fact that incompetence caused 90,000 people and that number still is going up to a naend did npandem not have to wreak havoc the way it did. Hes still going to have to apologize just for the inept way that his government has run through this pandemic. So, like i said, i spent the weekend reading your book and it was a wonderful experience and ive known you for a while now so i learned a lot about you. You skipped two grades, youre heavily at that timed whi heavily tatted which i didnt know because i see you usually with clothes. Thank you, john. But you write a lot about your father who is a civil rights icon who was wounded in the orangeburg massacre years before you were born, right . And you write about how you think its possible that youve been more acutely affected by this moment in history than your father. And i find that so interesting. I just wonder if you can talk about that. Yeah, i look at politics, i like at my life, i look at things through the lens of being a child of the movement. February 8th, 1968, i call it the most important day of my life. Its nearly 20 years before i was born, but my father was shot along with 28 others and three young men who were killed while they were protesting the message of discrimination. My father was not only shot, but my father was denied bound and howsed on dea housed on death row. My father went ton prison. So that trauma has stayed with our family for a very long period of time. Its very difficult because i have to live with that pain, i have to see the person that was the scapegoat. I have to see my father in those tears that still fall down his face, that pain in his eyes, the fact that his shoulders dont stand as upright as they once did, and i cory that burdarry t daily. You are an example for future generations. Think we hear in the background yes, you to. You are sharing your message and you are sharing what youve learned with oth tears aers ando appreciative of that. Congratulations on the book, its called my vanishing country. Go out and read it now. Thanks so much. Congratulations. Great to see you. John, i thought for a second you had a baby in the studio. No, but i might have a beard soon in the studio. You wear it well, bakari. Great to see you. Thank you. Thanks so much. Okay. Could dogs be the answer to finding out who has coronavirus . Youre going to see how that dogs will help track infections, next. [announcer] weve all seen it. The story where the chances are low, and the cost is high. The sacrifice is real. Its all around us. New information this morning about how california is now instituting this huge Contact Tracing program to identify people who may have been exposed to coronavirus and may not know about it. Cnns Stephanie Elam live in los angeles with the details. Contact tracing may be one of the keys for this country moving forward. Reporter Contact Tracing has been around since the 30s, brought around to control the spread of syphilis on military bases. Back then, it was a lot of knocking on doors, finding people. Now what is going to happen in california, has been happening all along, is picking up the phone and calling people and then inputting that information into a database. It all is happening here, even though you may not see it. This is unprecedented, especially for a respiratory virus. Reporter california is busy building an army to find out who has covid19 and to keep it from spreading further. Along with robust testing capabilities, these are key priorities under governor Gavin Newsoms plan to fully reopen the state. These are simply disease detectives that will be trained to support the existing workforce. Reporter through a new program led by the university of california San Francisco and ucla, the state is virtually training mostly current state and county employees as contact tracers. As a contact tracer growing the force from 3,000 to 13,000 by the end of the month. Once a positive test result is reported to the Health Department, that person can expect to get a call. Well talk to you about your symptoms and go over in detail where youve been in the last five days. Were interested in finding out with whom have you been in contact for more than ten minutes, within six feet, without a mask on. Reporter how much information are these people being asked to share . We need to know who they are, where they are, who their medical providers are, where theyre going to go into isolation. We want to know where theyre working. This is not just about managing the individuals, but trying to identify clusters of transmission. Reporter just as tracers did when someone in pasadena decided to throw a Birthday Party recently. One person brought a gift no one wanted. There was someone who was coughing, who attended the party. And there were subsequently five Laboratory Confirmed cases of covid19. Reporter one infectious person led to five confirmed cases within the city, plus possibly five or six other partygoers who live outside of pasadena and were also beginning to show symptoms. All tracked down by talking to the person who initially tested positive for the virus to get names and numbers of those they had been around. What were doing is for a particular reason, not to be invasive or intrusive or take away any of their freedoms. Reporter marie normally works for the pasadena central library. For now shes assisting the citys Health Department as a contact tracer. After a call, she sends her notes to a Public Health nurse who does a second investigation. They make a determination if this person would be safe going back to work. Reporter getting back to work, the ultimate goal, not just to recover but for california as well. Part of the reason why they need an army, marie told me a call can take up to 45 minutes to get all of that information. She gets through eight calls a day or so. But the other thing that they want to make sure these people know is that there are resources to help them, if they need to get food, if they need support. They also said they pretty much have compliance from people. They want to help out, and most importantly any want to get back on their feet and get back to work. Really good to hear, thank you very much for the report. Well, there may be a new reason to call them mans best friend. Researchers in the uk are studyistudy ing whether dogs can sniff out coronavirus in humans. Max foster is live in london with more. How does this work, max . Reporter alisyn, you may not know this, butting dids have 10,000 time 1 dogs have 10,000 times the sense of smell. Theyre confident theyll have success based on past experience. This dog is being trained to detect prostate cancer. Shes presented with urine samples. And rewarded when she identifies the correct one. Good girl. Good girl. Reporter this dog is able to identify the odor of malaria sufferers. The next mission here is to train dogs to sniff out people infected with covid19. The way were going to do that is by collecting using face masks and asking people to wear these face masks for a few hours, and then we carefully collect those and the other thing were going to do is get people to wear nylon socks, that sounds a bit strange, but we know from our previous experience that this is a really good way of collecting odors from people and it is such an easy way to do it. Reporter if the training is successful, one of the first deployments is likely to be airports. Where dogs are already used to sniff out drugs and other contraband. If they help reopen the travel industry, that could be the boost to international trade, the governments everywhere have been look for. And the great advantage that dogs have over technology here is that rate at which they can test for the virus. Alisyn, up to 250 people per hour. Low tech, but it works. That is fantastic. Thank you very much for that really interesting report, max. President trump is defying science again by selfmedicating with a potentially dangerous drug. New day continues right now. I happen to be taking it. Hydroxychloroquine, i think it is good. I heard a lot of good stories. This is in direct contradiction of the fdas own guidance. I would rather he not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists. He must have had quite extensive exposure for him to go ahead and begin hydroxychloroquine. Gyms in multiple states are open, 17 states seeing a rise in new cases over the past week. University of South Carolina says face to face instruction will also end after the thanksgiving holiday. Social distancing, face coverings, speeding up the day when we can open up more. Reporter this is new day with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world, this is new day. And every day is
