I will talk now. In the next two hours, while were on the air, the death toll in the United States from coronavirus will likely hit 50,000 people. Thats more americans that died in the vietnam war, korean war. Almost 3200 americans were added to this death toll yesterday. Meanwhile, a milestone of different sorts today. In georgia, gyms, hair salons, nail salons, bowling alleys, massage and tattoo parlors, they can reopen their doors today. Theaters and restaurants can reopen on monday. The big question this morning, how many people will use them . Were on the ground waiting to see. It is important to note that the death toll in georgia is expected to double within two weeks. This morning, john, Public Health officials are having to put out warnings against an outrageous suggest made by President Trump. He publicly wondered at his press briefing if regular household disinfectants like bleach which can of course kill the virus on surfaces can cure coronavirus inside people. The disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute and is there a way we can do Something Like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning, as you see gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number on the lungs. It would be interesting to check that. Youre going to have to use medical doctors. But it sounds interesting to me. Okay. The Parent Company of lysol just released this statement moments ago. Quote, under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body through injection, ingestion or any other route. In short, what the president was musing about there, which he thought sounded interesting, can kill you. Do not do that. Okay. Joining us now is dr. Ashish jha. Hes the director of the Health Institute and dr. Jeanne marrazzo, the university of alabama in birmingham. Dr. Marrazzo, i dont know where to begin. The fact that the president thinks it sound interesting that maybe if lysol or bleach or disinfectant works on a surface, maybe it would work inside you. I mean, this is beyond snake oil. This is so dangerous and the reason its dangerous is because that some people actually believe what the president of the United States says and some people try it. Yeah. Good morning, alisyn. I agree its a very worrisome concept. There is a reason that theres an entire field of chemical pneumonias. Basically, we know that people who inhale these kinds of compounds can experience significant lung damage and anybody who has cleaned their own bathroom those that the smell of bleach can be really disturbing. Its not something that you want to be exposed to over a long period of time. I do think that it does speak to desperation. I mean, we are seeing still a lot of people die. John just mentioned that we anticipate that the death toll in georgia is going to double in a couple of weeks. That is really frightening. Particularly in the concept of reopening that state. Desperation is one thing. Danger is another, though. I just wake up this morning feel like its come to this. That the maker of lysol has got to put out a statement saying dont listen to the president of the United States. Honestly, whats next, a Surgeon General warning saying that these words may hurt or kill you. Dr. Jha, again, the part that makes me insane isnt just that its dangerous, its that its time wasted. Its time wasted by him, its time wasted by the doctors, like dr. Birx who has to answer for it and cover it up and fluff him somehow when he asks her, oh, that could be interesting. Its time wasted. Instead concentrating on testing or things that we know will help here. Good morning, john. Thats exactly right. This is a distraction. The big message i have for your viewers is get your advice from a medical doctor. Thats the best place to get medical advice. Not from political leaders. The point is now were spending all of our time talking about how what we should be doing with lysol as opposed to talking about how we safely reopen the country, how we maintain social distancing in a smart way. How we do testing. How we make progress on vaccines and therapies. Thats what we should be talking about. We keep getting distracted by these issues. Its incredibly frustrating. As you said, thousands of americans are dying and id like us to focus on the issue at hand which is the virus and the scientific approach to defeating the virus. Right. The problem is dr. Marrazzo, americans do take the words of the president of the United States seriously, any president of the United States. They believe those carry weight and those carry more weight than your neighbor. The reason i bring this up is because we already know that people have taken his past words seriously to deadly consequences. An arizona couple heard about chloroquine, they were trying to protect themselves. The wife realized she had chloroquine or what she thought was lying around the house because it cleaned their fish tanks and they took it. The husband died. To pretend that, well, he was just musing or to hope, i guess, that he was just musing, these actually carry consequences, what you say from the podium in the white house. So i hear you. I mean, i dont want to take time discussing it either this morning. But there could be consequences. Yeah, i agree. It is a distraction in a scientific and Public Health sense. But we do have to deal with it. We really have to counter what i agree are incredibly dangerous words and people do take words seriously. This, i think, is a really important reminder that we really need Strong National leadership at this time. People are really hungry for the kind of information that they need to keep themselves safe. So i could not agree with you more. I would rather be talking about the kinds of things we should be talking about, which is safe reopening and getting people back to work in a way that makes sense. Im going to play one more moment of this before i do what i think we all want to do is to move on to things that may save lives. This is the exchange between President Trump and dr. Deborah birx yesterday at the News Conference where he was looking for some kind of affirmation on this. Deborah, have you ever heard of that, the heat and the light relative to certain viruses, yes. But relative to this virus . Not as a treatment. I mean, certainly fever is a good thing when you have a fever. It helps your body respond. But not i have not seen heat or i think its a great thing to look at. All right. Not as a treatment. Leave it there. Lets save lives this morning instead of what the president was doing yesterday, dr. Jha. If we can. Theres a new study out of china which is interesting. They report that they have successfully cloned antibodies to the coronavirus. Why might that be important . How could that be used in production or mass production possibly of a vaccine . Yeah. I think it would be actually really powerful as a therapy. So the idea is we believe and theres some evidence that co a convalescent plasma, giving it to people acutely ill, once you recovered you should have the antibodies. We dont know which antibodies are neutralizing, which ones work to deal with the virus. So this study, i think is very promising. If we can identify which antibodies are working and then we can create large samples of them, we dont have to get large amounts of plasma from recovered patients. We can give this as therapy. Again, lets not like get overly excited. Im not convinced its going to work but im optimistic. This could end up being a really important therapy. Dr. Marrazzo, lets talk about what happens in a couple of hours in georgia. Businesses there will be allowed to reopen. Some businesses. Weve talked about them. Hair and nail salons, tattoo parlor, et cetera. At the moment, the models show without any reopening, these models were taken before georgia reopened. That 881 people in georgia have died as of today. Without any reopening. In two weeks the model shows that that number will double. By june, that number would be more than 2,000 people. So we have no idea how many businesses will feel comfortable opening or how many customers will feel comfortable going to those businesses. What do you imagine will happen over the next few weeks or months in georgia . Well, to say its worrisome is an understatement. The plan as outlined flies against what was outlined in actually the sensible plan that the president ial task force released last week. It said, remember, that you really want to see things declining, the rate of new infections declining for about two weeks before you start to reopen things. You want to be sure you have adequate personal protective equipment so that you can deal with an outbreak if it does happen and you want to be sure you have adequate diagnostic testing so that you can go out there and find whats happening if you do see a resurgery surge. Im not persuaded to say that georgia is in that position. You just mentioned were anticipating seeing an increase in deaths or sustained deaths. That goes very much against what we would recommend when we think about reopening places. So its a big gamble and it makes me very anxious. Very interesting to see will be how many people actually go out and use these places today. Thats what were waiting to look for. Weve got reporters on the ground in georgia at this moment. Dr. Marrazzo and dr. Jha, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Thank you, stay safe. Numbers we havent seen since the great depression. [ barking ] more than 26 million americans have lost their jobs during this pandemic. The situation in florida is particularly bad. More than a Million People have applied for benefits but only 17 have gotten paid. Cnns rosa flores is live in miami with more. Whats going wrong there, rosa . Reporter alisyn, the florida unemployment system has been broken for years. I talked to an expert yesterday who says that the states own audit revealed for the past three years serious issues with the unemployment system that have never been fixed. On top of that, add a pandemic and its a recipe for disaster. Floridas unemployment system is such a mess, people have taken to the streets to protest. I feel its like rigged. Even the governor calls his unemployment system a piece of junk. The fact that the state paid 77 million for this thing, i mean its a gentleman lop i. Since march 15th, more than 1. 7 million unemployment claims have been filed. The state say some could be duplicates. So far, fewer than 117,000 claims have been paid. Bills have to get paid. We paid our unemployment and we need it now. Images of the dysfunction went viral earlier this month. The online and phone systems were so overwhelmed, people in hialeah desperately waited in line for paper applications. I dont think this is the way you should treat people. The system was overwhelmed. They didnt have the capacity, manpower either and we said weve got to fix this. Governor ron desantis announced he added 100 computer servers, broad Call Center Staffing to 2,000 workers and even waived some of the rules. But they cant keep up. There are people like me who are just wondering how long this is going to be. As the weeks drag on, floridians have joined yet another line. This time for food. Its maddening says this woman. She filed a claim in early april and hasnt seen a dime. This is her first time seeking assistance, like half of the 4700 people who call feeding south florida daily. The ceo. What were getting from our families is a sense of desperation. And that theyre scared. The fear of the unknown is probably the biggest fear. The unknown of when this is going to end. The same people who sounded the alarm about the broken unemployment system are worried about the governors upcoming plan to reopen the state. I love my job. But when they call us back to work, are we going to be safe . Already adding insult to injury, the most benefits that someone in florida can qualify for is 275 a week. Thats one of the lowest benefits around the country. Rosa flores for us in miami. Rosa, thanks so much. Want to bring in cnn chief Business Correspondent christine romans. Romance, you say that florida is the worst place in the developed world to lose your job. I dont think youre using much hyperbole there. Im not at all. You look at the aerial pictures of what are modernday bread lines in florida where people are sleeping in their cars to keep their spot in line to get food because theyre not getting their unemployment checks and when they do get their unemployment checks, theyre so small, as rosa said. The governor and the the state last night saying that the extra assistance thats put in the stimulus under the cares act, the pandemic, unemployment assistance, supposed to give them bigger checks, check back later to see how florida can implement that. Now that were several weeks into this, we have visibility on the places getting hit the hardest. What are you seeing . Im seeing hawaii over the past five weeks, more than a quarter of hawaiis labor force has filed for Unemployment Benefits. Kentucky and michigan, 24 of their active workforce have applied for Unemployment Benefits in the past five weeks. Rhode island, pennsylvania and nevada. These are some of the hardest hit points of pain in what has been a decade of job creation wiped out in just five weeks, john. Any sense of which states are doing maybe better . I dont know what the right word to use is. Everyone is suffering. Everyone is suffering. The volume of numbers here, of layoffs. Again, were doing this on purpose to fight the pandemic. Theres no playbook for this. Were putting all these people out of work here and on to what should be the new modernday safety net. Were talking about depression level job loss. But we have a different economy. A different system than the depression. The important thing here is that that Safety Networks and the money gets flowing and its been clunk i up until now. It is interesting when you compare whats happening in the United States and the fears about joblessness compared to other countries which are having pandemic issues of their own. We do it a certain way. We are a free market economy here, right . What we do is we allow the businesses to lay off their workers and then the state Unemployment Benefits and now this federal stimulus money on top of that is meant to be the safety net. The only problem here, weve had trouble getting the money into the hands of the people who need it. The anxiety of calling 100 times a day to get through to your Unemployment Office to file. To file multiple times and have to start over again for Unemployment Benefits. In europe, in the uk for example, the government just stepped in and started paying the payroll up to a certain level. Not all of it. Paying to a certain level. People are out of work. But they still have a job and are still getting paid until this storm passes. Thats a very different way of doing things. Again, its not going to happen here. It just wont. But it is interesting to see how it is done differently and how some anxieties are allayed because of it. There is this new rescue plan. The third wave as it were. 450 billion roughly. When can people get their handson this money . The president is going to sign it, right . Then theres 60 billion in particular in there that has been steered towards these real small lenders that do Community Development and hopefully that is going to help minority communities and places that are not necessarily as as the other players. Look, until now, its been the big guys, the public companies. It has been people who have got long lasting lending agreements with their banks. Those are the people who got the money. Theyve got to do a better job getting it to the little guys. They have to do a bet r job. Christine reromans great to have you on this morning. You too. But the British Government warns that until a vaccine or treatment is effective, social distancing is all they have to control the virus. Doctors and nurses tell cnn that they fear what could happen if restrictions are lifted. Cnns Nick Paton Walsh followed the medical staff at one hospital for 4 hours and he joins us 24 hours and joins us now. What did you hear from them . Reporter behind hee, there isnt really a debate about getting the economy. The concern behind me here, they still see people dying most days and recovering, too, is that if people find social distancing restrictions are lifted, infection could pick up again and they could see a second wave here in one of the worst affected areas in the United Kingdom. When, if ever, does it end . This vast hospital is in the uks second worst hotspot, the midlands and has no easy answers. While london mends, the living an the dying keep coming and they fear the second wave may be near. We look to numbers for comfort. But in this icu, the odds are about even with covid, doctors say. During the 24 hours we were here, two patients died and two got out of icu as virus rages through our ordinary world outside, in here, its power is in the quiet it imposes. You not only see the ferocity of this disease but the silence with which it kills and also helplessness of the people suffering. One doctor wore a body cam during the lifesaving procedure of proning, turning a patient on their front to ease breathing. We dont 100 understand why it works. Essentially what it does is changes the distribution of air within the chest. But also, changes the way the blood is distributed in the chest. Really well. Keep going. Going to have if people pass away, its more often because weve come to the conclusion that theyre not going rather than them dying suddenly. The hardest for staff, the isolation means patients dying here without their family nearby. Masked doctors and nurses are the last people they see alive. Ive held a telephone to the ear of a gentleman who was dying so his wife could speak to him. He was sedated. But someone can hear you. The nurses looking after the patient will sit and hold their hand as they pass away. Theyre always with someone. When my colleagues confessed that they were scared, i confessed and said im scared, too. Now this has gone on, i think, the best we can do is wear the ppe, keep our fingers crossed that we dont get it. So am i scared, no. Not scared like when i started. Medical shift were in. I just cry in the shower. I cry in the shower. I cry at night. Going to cry again. Its just very im scared. Im just scared and you know, im just basically like oh, when am i going to catch this . You know, were here. Were dealing with patients who are infected. Despite having all the ppes, you still dont know even if you go by the book, there are people still get infected. Its just really im just so scared. This is not over. Its not even clear if this is the beginning of the end or a lull before another wave. We need to continue with the lockdown to stop the spreading. So the next six weeks were on stand by for another wave, yeah. Still, the sick come. Worsening and improving. Jacqueline, who delayed coming to hospital because she feared catching there the virus she already had is improving. They called the ambulance three times. I kept refusing to come in. I was scared to come in. Oh, my goodness. Its so tight. Youve got somebody sitting on your chest. Youre trying to breathe and youre not getting anywhere. Its really frightening. This hospital has had over 170 patients die from covid. It now has about 170 who have it or possibly have it. A toll leaving them both ready and cautious about a second wave. In a pandemic so riddled with unknowns, it leaves a certain only of how much we need each other. Reporter so much of this disease happens behind closed doors. Thats the real feeling you get from seeing inside that intensive care unit. Just how real and deadly and current the pandemic still is. People discuss, should we go back to work, should we try and get back to normal life . Those are the privileged healthy still able to move around. Inside here, you saw stories of the bravery, the resilience of the medical care professionals who put their lives on the line every day to rescue those who can be rescued. For them, theres no real debate about whether or not people should get back to normal as quickly as possible. To some degree, the United Kingdom has been sort of lucky, it hasnt been as bad as it possibly could have been. It doesnt mean it cant worsen if people go back that fast to normal in the weeks ahead. John . The emotional and physical drain on the health care workers, nick, is extraordinary. Youre right, they dont have the privilege of wondering today what it will be like to go back to normal because its not anywhere near normal for them. Not now. Nick paton walsh for us. To support Distance Learning tools, curriculum and resources to help educators and families keep school in session because the key to keeping kids learning, is keeping kids connected. If you are at home with your children this morning, i dont have to tell you these are challenging times. At least 41 states have ordered schools closed for the rest of the academic year. If this pandemic somehow reshaping education for good and are some kids being left behind . Joining us now is jill biden, the wife of Presumptive Democratic nominee, joe biden and a teacher for 35 years and the National Association they held a telephone town hall for educators trying to confront the coronavirus crisis. Great to see you both, ladies. Dr. Biden, i want to start with you. Tell us about this 10,000person sort of virtual or telephonic town hall you had. What was the most pressing issue you heard from educators . You know, alisyn, it was so exciting. We had really over 13,000 teachers on that phone call. I promise the teachers that when joe was the nominee that we would listen to the teachers and thats what were doing. Were starting now. So this was our first phone call in a series. So i heard three things, actually from our teachers. I heard that theyre worried about the inequity in education. You know, some kids who are at home have broadband, have laptops and some kids do not. I heard about unemployment. Some of the support workers are like the bus drivers, the cafeteria workers. Theyre worried about, will there jobs still be there when they go back to school, hopefully in september. Then the third one was Mental Health. Of course, a lot of people, most people are feeling anxiety during this time. So whats this going to look like when these children come back into our classrooms . How are the teachers going to handle this . So ive seen and ive heard over and over again, teachers asking for more Mental Health in the classroom and thats why my husband, joe, is going to double the funding for psychologists and counselors and social workers. It is so needed in our Public School system. Thats really interesting. Ms. Garcia, what do you think has been lost during these months the kids are not physically in school . What do you think the Lasting Impact of this time will be . What were hearing from teachers, from support staff, from counselors and social workers and folks that are that family that education a child. Theyre worried about trauma and theyre worried because they know the trauma theyre going through. This is a scary time. Its a scary time for you and me and the big people in the world. Imagine the little kids. All of a sudden their whole world is different and all they know is they have to stay home and cant give their teacher a hug. What were looking at is the social Emotional Wellbeing of these kids. When they come back and i think this is the good thing that will happen. More and more people will see what an educator sees. Im an elementary teacher. We know that its more than reading, writing and arithmetic. Thats what we deliver every day. We also know the kids need to count on someone, that someone loves them, that someone believes in them and listens to them. Its okay to be afraid. Its okay to be angry when youre scared. But heres how you deal with that anger. And so, the rest of the world is understanding the whole child the way that we do. We need a lot of time when we get back into those schools to get those kids to understand that there is still somebody out there that the big people are still protecting them. Ms. Garcia, i also read that you said that too many students have disappeared during this crisis. What do you mean . Where have they gone . Its back what with what dr. Jill just said. That if you live in certain neighborhoods, it was very easy, although nothing is really easy. Thats a relative term. It was easier for you to contact your kids, you do a facetime call or a video call. You can connect with the parents and then there were other kids where the only the only technology in their house was maybe a cell phone that mom had to take to work with her because she was a cashier at a grocery store. So you couldnt even phone them to find out if they were there. So we had a lot of teachers in their cars, theyd drive up, honk the horn and wave at their kids out the window or leave a homework packet. Not every kid is easily found in this crisis and all of a sudden those are the inequities that have been laid what was supposed to be the safety net. Dr. Biden, so many parents are struggling, so many people lost their jobs. So many Public Schools and states are now, you know, financially struggling with their budgets and so for the vulnerable kids that were talking about, what will become of them . Well, i think with my husband as president , i think that we want to put one of the things joe wants to do is put more money into education. Weve seen that weve seen the needs of the schools and the schoolchildren. So joe wants to triple the funding for the title i programs and theyre the most the title i programs are for the most the children who need it most. So you know, theres so many needs to be addressed. Theres special ed programs, kids with disabilities. Joe wants to fully fund the disabilities act. So there will be hope for these children that when they come back to school. You know, we have a lot of work to do. Dr. Biden, while i have you, i have a couple of Campaign Questions that i want to take an opportunity to ask you, particularly it must be tough to campaign during a pandemic. What is yours and your husbands plans for the coming weeks and months. Well, weve been campaigning over zoom and over video chats and actually were reaching thousands of people just like the teacher chat that we did last night where i spoke to 13,000 people. So so thats how were reaching people. Were keeping in touch with yesterday we made a call to president of the navajo nation. Were talking to people who are truly suffering. They hadnt received food or supplies there. Im talking to Cancer Patients that are isolated and alone. And military families. Were keeping connected in so many ways that actually if there is a Silver Lining in this, as far as campaigning, i mean, joes strength is oneonone with people. He loves to be out there shaking hands. But look at the number of people that we can reach via zoom or via video chat. So for that for us thats been kind of a blessing. I know that your husband is in the process of considering a running mate. Who do you want it to snb. Oh, my goodness. Theres so many qualified, strong women and youve seen them in the process that weve gone through. And so im going to leave that up to him. I think that joe has always said that he and barack shared the same values. That was so important to him and why they got along so well. I think hell look for a woman who has the same values and that he does. I think thats really important. Well, then i have a suggestion. I dont know. I mean this is off the top of my head. Maybe former First Lady Michelle Obama . You know, id love it if michelle would agree to. It. I think shes had it with politics. Shes so good at everything she does. That would be wonderful. Dr. Jill biden, we really appreciate you being here and lily garcia, thank you very much for everything that youre doing for kids and for sharing with us what the future may look like after were out the other side of this. So everyone longs to get back to their old way of life. What happens if states open too early . Well, it turns out history has an answer to that. And john avlon has our reality check. Politicians were feeling the pressure during the pandemic. There were protests as businesses agitated reopen, deaths were going down, seemed time to declare Mission Accomplished to get the economy moving again, especially with an election looming. In this case, it was 1918. And denver mayor willie mills bowed to pressure and decided to back off social distancing. This was soon after his Health Manager declared the playigue i under control. They banned indoor gatherings for weeks but made progress. Social distancing and masks were understood to help stem the tide. Then as now rolling nature of pandemics affected coastal cities first and more remote areas later. Folks were bristling at social distancing for weeks and businesses, especially movie theaters, were irritated about losing money. They scapegoated immigrant communities and native american tribes, arguing it was better to quarantine those who showed symptoms and let everyone else go about their business. It back fired, big time. By november 22nd, deaths were spiking, denver officials scrambled to reinstate bans for gatherings, requiring masks. The damage was done. The denver post, headlines blared bad news, all flu records smashed in denver in the last 24 hours, claiming more denver residents died of influenza than those killed in the first world war. They failed to flatten the curve and suffered a more serious second bump as this graph shows. Compare that to philadelphia, which suffered the deadliest outbreak in the early days, but then saw a dramatic sustained decline or st. Louis, which learned a lesson about social distancing and kept deaths relatively low. But San Francisco provides another cautionary tale. Because after initial success and antimask leagues protested local laws that made citizens wear masks, they held mask protests, demanded the City Health Officer be fired, complaining his order was contrary to the desires of the majority of the people. As if on cue, influenza cases spiked in San Francisco, extending into 1919. There is, of course, a darkly ironic echo to the protests we have seen lately. In georgia, brian kemp was late to the lockdown, now wants to open up early. Hes the same governor surprised to learn that asymptomatic people could spread the disease. Weeks after it was widely known. Now hes allowing sympathy businesses to reopen, even without consulting his own Coronavirus Task force. A century ago, politicians didnt have precedence or modern science to learn best practices. But we do now. Which makes the prohe test test like members of the flat earth society, competing to win the darwin awards. It is worse that the president has been egging them on with calls to liberate states against the guidance of governors and his own health experts. As harry truman once send, the only thing new in the world is the history you dont know. What is unforgivable is for our leaders to remain ignorant of history and therefore doomed to repeat it. When they succeed it can feel like we have been overreacting and we are making progress against covid19, bending the curve, but it is not over, not by a long shot. Our lives will get back to something resembling normal at different speeds and different regions, we can never entirely eliminate risk, but we need to be smart and science driven about our decisions. Heres whats clear. Premature declarations of victory only guarantee defeat and thats your reality check. It is always great to get some reality with john avlon. We have some new developments and new day continues right now. Georgia governor brian kemps plan to relax social distancing efforts begins this morning. I wasnt happy with it. I wasnt happy with brian kemp. Exercise common sense. Listen to the science and stay home. We are not in the situation where we say were exactly where we want to be with regard to testing. I think were doing a great job on testing. I dont agree with him. The idea we would inject some people with disinfectant and see what happens, that would be dangerous. We need to be telling the unequivocal truth. Do not try these things at home. This is new day with Alisyn Camerota and john berman. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to our viewers in the United States and all around the world this is new day. The death toll in the United States will likely hit 50,000 people this morning. Thats more americans than died in the vietnam or korean wars. Almost 3200 people were added to the death toll yesterday and i know that we can get numb to these numbers, but some numbers like 50,000 are still shocking to even just say out loud. So despite the death toll, some states are reopening Business Today in georgia, gyms, hair and nail salons, bowling alleys, massage and tattoo parlors can open their doors. Theaters and restaurants can reopen on monday. The models suggest that georgia has not even hit its peak yet. And its death toll will double in two wes
