Jed more than 33,000 new cases were reported in the United States. The beak in this country is predicted peak it predicted to be sunday. Theyve published new guidelines saying essential employees can go back to work even if theyre exposed as long as they take precautions, including taking their temperature daily and they cant feel sick. Dr. Anthony fauci, the top Infectious Disease expert believes the tradition of shaking hands must stop permanently. Speaking of longstanding traditions, take a look at this passover seder in the era of social distancing. Families and loved ones coming to the celebrate the holiday if theyre not physically together. In some ways, it was more imbued with the spirit of passover than any of the seders ive been involved in. It was really deeply meaningful to be a part of the seder on the screen youre seeing last night. Were hours from a new measurement of the economic pain in this country. Well see how many file for unemployment next week. Up to 7 million new claims are expected. That would mean a total job loss of more than 15 million total. Weir going to bring you the numbers as soon as we have them. There is a new focus on prisons overnight. More than 100 inmates at Washington State prison staged in chicago, more than 400 people connected to one jail have tested positive making that the largest known source of coronavirus in the United States. What are the next hotspots . The White House Task force believes it could be washington, d. C. , baltimore and philadelphia. Joining us now are dr. Jeanne marrazzo at the university of alabama at birmingham and dr. William schaaf ner. Hes at vanderbilt medical center. We have a lot to get to. Dr. Marrazzo, when you hear that the white house is eyeing early may to restart the economy, reopen the country, what are your thoughts . Well, good morning, alisyn and john. Good to be with you again. My thoughts go back to something that dr. Fauci has been saying several times. That, again, is that the virus makes the timeline. The challenge here is that we have been swimming upstream during this whole last several months because we havent really had good diagnostic testing. I think if you really want to think about opening the country, you really need to know who has been infected and is thus immune. Who is still at risk and who is actively infected. If we had a series of tests that we could deploy to really figure out who to reintroduce into the economy, which we desperately need to do, that would help us dramatically. Doctor, the attorney general of the United States, william barr, who isnt part of the medical task force as far as i believe, had a remarkable statement that might indicate some pressures inside the administration to open up as soon as possible. Listen to what he said. He said i think when this period of time at the end of april expires, i think we have to allow its a sound bite. Let me listen to william barr here. I think when this period of time at the end of april expires, i think we have to allow people to adapt more than we have. Not just tell people to go home and hide under the bed. To allow them to use other ways of social distancing and other means to protect themselves. Is that what weve been doing. Telling people to hide under their beds and is it time all of a sudden . It sounds like what the president was going through a few weeks ago when he wanted to open by easter and it would be a beautiful thing for everyone to be in church at easter. He had to back off of that. Is this going to be a similar situation for may 1st . Good morning john and alisyn. Im concerned that were setting dates and not listening to the virus. The virus is going to tell us when its safe to open up again. If we had more widespread testing as we are doing now and then down the road we will soon have Antibody Testing that will let us determine who is still susceptible, those two tests, if widely deployed, cleverly, i think will help us in a statewide fashion, not all at once, reopen things so that we can get back to normal. Dr. Schaaf ner, if we dont listen to the virus, i know that you think we put ourselves at great risk of a second wave. And everything that weve done for the past two months being for naught. Alisyn, you said it very well. If we let ourselves open up very quickly and exuberantly again, then that gives the virus more opportunities to once again spread readily among us and create a second wave, which will create much, much disappointment, a lot of confusion and will reduce confidence in the government. Thats none of that is appropriate. Obviously, dr. Marrazzo, we all want to be out in public as soon as we possibly can. The question is how to do it safely and how to do it right. It was interesting to hear, dr. Anthony fauci. Hes thinking very big picture about this. About ways that humanity needs to change, maybe forever. Listen to what he said about shaking hands. I dont think we ever should ever shake hands ever again to be honest with you. Not only would it be good to prevent coronavirus disease, it probably would decrease the incidence of influenza dramatically in this country. What struck me about this, dr. Marrazzo, im sure the medical professionals agree with this. Its so simple but it shows you to the extent with which this pandemic may just change every. Yeah. Its really fascinating. I think our culture not just our medical culture, but our social culture will be radically changed. One of the big things that happened in the hospital is we are now taking histories from patients outside the room. Not having that sort of face to face connection where you go in and shake the patients hand, sometimes you touch the patient as you examine them, that is a radical difference. I agree. You know, its interesting, ive been hearing and i think the data will show that a lot of other infections that are transmitted by handtohand contact has plummeted in incidence in the last several months. One of them is influenza. Classic influenza. The other is cdif. A diarrheal disease that can afflict people, especially older people. Seeing the data will be so important to perhaps buttress the contention or the suggestion that dr. Fauci made. Hes also thinking several months ahead. Thats what we need to do as well. Dr. Schaaf ner, i know you want us to listen to the virus. I want to hear from you. Theres a date that the experts have been band iing about for the peak. It sounds a little early to me. They think the peak in the United States will be Easter Sunday. But weve heard about the rolling peaks that will travel across the country. Do you agree that Easter Sunday is the peak for the United States . Well, im not so sure i can give you an exact date. But certainly cases are still rising in many parts of the country. But in other parts of the country, our social distancing seems to be having an effect. And thats very, very affirming and reinforcing the notion that we shouldnt give up now. We should keep this up in order to make sure that this virus not only tops out but we can continue to flatten this curve so that the virus recedes and we can get back slowly to our normal activities. But we need to do this in a careful, very staged way. Each time making a decision. Kind of one week at a time almost. One week at a time. Maybe one city at a time, one region at a time. Dr. Marrazzo, couple interesting studies overnight. Two came from new york city which talked about when the virus got here. They traced the genome back and determined that it got to the new york area actually in the middle of february and it was from europe. Not from china. What does this tell you . Yeah. I think its an amazingly interesting study. There are two studies which came to the same conclusion independently. What does it say to us . It says that the molecular epidemiology or the pathway of the virus as it has crossed borders is much more complicated than just tracing the path of people as they take airplanes or take ships or whatever. So i think that its a window into what really happened. That closing the borders to china, while that seemed to be a very big step and probably did have some impact, bass probabwa too late. The virus had already made its escape from china. I think that we will know a lot more as the molecular epidemiologic studies continue to look at where the virus came from, how it got to where it got and well figure this out as time goes on. Another analysis, doctor, that we wanted to touch on, the Washington Post crunched a lot of numbers from different states and different hospitals and found out something that doctors have anecdotally been telling us. That is that this virus does not discriminate for age, there are a lot of young people getting sick. I mean very young. Some teenagers from their 20s, some in their 30s who are dying from it. Theres an e. R. Doctor in la jolla, california that says half the patients in his e. R. Are under the age of 50. Do we need to think about this differently . Is that what youre seeing as well . Well, initially we really focused on people who were older with underlying illnesses. Obviously, this virus is much more, shall we say, democratic. It can spread in any aspect of our population. We in nashville are also seeing people admitted to the hospital who are younger, middle aged adults and young adults. Were warming up now, were seeing more of those patients all the time. With asymptomatic transmission, think virus, i think is moving among middle aged, younger people and children being infected and they, in turn, hand their infection off to older persons. Dr. Marrazzo, dr. Schaaf ner, thank you very much for going through all of the new headlines with us this morning. We appreciate being able to lean on your expertise. Thanks. Stay healthy. You too. So coronavirus is killing and infecting black and latino communities at an alarmingly high rate. We discuss why and what weve learned about this, next. Because theyre here. Working day in, day out. He blames everyone but himself for the u. S. Response. China, the World Health Organization, democratic governors. Theyve all become targets. Join us now maggie haberman, and political analyst david gregory. I left out the media. Somehow the journalists are also responsible for the failed u. S. Response at times to the crisis. This is a behavior pattern for the president that youve observed, i think, not just over months but over years. This is the president s claim. Deflecting blame. Taking celled it when things are going well, things are going badly its someone elses fault. The latest instance of him blaming the w. O. H. Some of them have issues with [ inaudible ] that in january. The line is that it must all be someone elses fault. I expect that is going to continue as criticism continues as the federal governments response. David, the w. H. O. Appeared to have some incorrect messaging early on with this when not a lot of information was known. But so did President Trump. I mean, this is the thing that always astounds me. Theres videotape. So every time that he tries to deflect blame and say they didnt get it right or somebody didnt get it right, we can cue up the sound bite of him saying that soon there will be zero cases in the United States. And as you can see on your screen, that is the opposite of what was true. How about the fact that there were members of the president s administration, health and Human Services secretary, who is trying to sound the alarm. Peter navarro reported as trying to sound the alarm. Thats so clearly documented here. Are there things the World Health Organization has not gotten right . Sure. You hear Anthony Fauci say over the years the World Health Organization has had problems with the organization. But he as a Public Health specialist also says that he relies upon them, the community of scientists around the world to speak to main o. Seek to maintain Public Health. Thats far more important. What you wish out of a leader is that the president will stand up and say look, there will be time to examine who got what right and wrong. There were mistakes made within government, throughout the government in terms of our preparedness for something this unusual. Right now, lets achieve the results in front of us, which are getting people healthy. Sometimes, maggie, the messaging is contradictory. Sometimes within the same news conference. Overall, if youre trying to send a message, lets Work Together and fight this invisible enemy together, hes doing that sometimes in the same events where hes attacking people by name or groups of people. Usually when he is saying we all need to come together is when he is reading the prepared remarks that he comes to the podium with. When he starts talking without that and answering questions is when hes fighting with the media, hes fighting accusing the democrats of trying to attack him. Suggesting that people are out to get him. Why cant you praise me . He has a fundamental misunderstanding of what reporters do. Anything is seen by him as sort of up down about him as opposed to as david was portraying, a more nuanced view of in his description, it is all black and white. Good or bad. David, i thought it was interesting there was an editorial today that the press briefings that we watch every day for information, hungry for information about the plan or whatever new staffs there are have possibly outlived their usefulness because what the wall street journal says, when you track them over time, at first they were fact heavy. Now theres a lot of just insulting of reporters who are trying to do their jobs and asking questions. Theres a lot about President Trump reiterating how effective he thinks that his travel restrictions from china were. Though we now know that did not shut down the outbreak here. That hundreds of thousands of people did travel from china and so, i dont know, what are your thoughts on whether or not these are still helpful . You know, i still look to these briefings to get information primarily from the Public Health officials on what is the latest on the virus and the tracking of the virus. Theres obviously important elements with regard to legislation thats happening in terms of trying to stimulate the economy. That is important. But i agree, i think its becoming something akin to the folly, the follies during the vietnam war where you have briefings with contradictory or false information down to the use of this tired cliche after the light at the end of the tunnel which apparently nobody told the president is a euphemism for having blinders on and not seeing reality that goes back to the vietnam war. Astounding to me they keep using that tired parade. Primarily, its a chance for the president to show hes large and in charge and to take on all comers who disagree with him. Its counterproductive. As the wall street journal laid out, people arent interested in that. Theres people that hate the media, think theyre out to get trump or focused on the negative. You always have those people. What people want to know, are you achieving results . Only the federal government has the scales to deal with this kind of pandemic. You want the results. Not whether governors agree with the president. The number one issue for everyone this morning, tomorrow morning, for the next several months is what are you doing to save lives and how are your actions going to save lives . Maggie that, dovetails to my next question to you, has to do with voting and the idea of mailin voting. We got to figure out how were going to vote in the country, not only the primaries, but in november. The president laid down this line on mailin voting that he calls it a great evil despite the fact that he voted by mail in florida. Whats going on here . So he actually tried cleaning that statement up on twitter last night. He gave again, as i said before, theres no nuance in what he said. He gave a blanket condemnation of mailin voting, its corrupt. Youll never have another republican elected. There was a push by democrats, particularly nancy pelosi in one of the packages to help the country after and through the virus outbreak. There was a push for a much more uniform and broader form of by mail voting. Thats what hes reacting to. Hes reacting to a new way that sounds dismissive. But a form that some of his own voters need. Particularly older voters. So he tried moving away from that last night. Look, theres a broad republican push to limit the expansion of mailin voting beyond what state by state laws dictate. So youre going to see the a wellfinanced effort by the Trump Campaign and the rnc to push back on democrats who want to expand it. Studies show that the fraud that the president talks about is exceedingly rare. They argue this is being done to disenfranchise be poorer voters, minority voters, voters who tend to vote more democrat. Well see how it plays out. It may get him in trouble. Can i say what i think is so important here. In a democracy, as many people who can vote should vote. Thats the bottom line. If youre trying to depress the voting in any way, relying on lower turnout, that means youre afraid of the voters. Heres whats most important between today and april and november, we spend time trying to make sure there is no fraud in mailin voting. That we have an actual fallback to make sure our elections this is part of the same problem. Prepare for the possibility of difficulty. Have a backup plan. Maybe theres so many people working on the integrity of our voting right now. Tap those resources. Tap those experts and make sure you get it right. Dont say no, we dont want mailin votes so we can keep Older Americans and as well as others make sure you can do it while keeping people healthy. Right imt great to have you both this morning. Whatever the situation is, natural disaster, hurricane katrina, people standing on those rooftops were not rich, white people. Thats new York Governor Andrew Cuomo talking about the massive toll the coronavirus is taking on underserved communities and communities of color. New york city now reports that coronavirus is killing black and latino people at twice the rate that its killing white people. A staggering 62 are black and latino in the United States. So joining us now is reverend william barr ber. Hes the president of repairers of the breach and good morning reverend. Good morning. Good morning. Im sure its no surprise to you to hear what Governor Cuomo and others have said, which is that the most Vulnerable People are the poor people and communities of color and, you know, doctors explain through these comorbidities, they talk about diabetes and hypertension and obesity. How do you explain what were seeing . Thank you so much. One of the reasons the Poor Peoples Campaign is having a mass poor Peoples Assembly [ inaudible ] because even before the coronavirus, there were 140 million poor and lowincome people in america. Thats 43 . But in black communities 61 , 26 Million People were poor and lowincome prior to this virus. So what we have is we have historic inequities and we know from a number of studies, including the institute of medicine that African Americans have less access to Affordable High Quality Health Care and often receive lower quality of care than their white counterparts. What epidemiologists tell us is that pandemics expose the fissures of our society. They expose all of the things we havent fixed prior to the pandemic. So we had less health care, we had less wages in poor communities and then in poor African American communities, 61 , we had 700 people dying a day in america over a quarter million a year from poverty and low income and the things that cause even before this virus. As you know, there are 2 trillion worth of taxpayer money now that the federal government, you know, congress has tried to infuse into society to try to staunch some of the bleeding from this crisis. But i know that you think it may not end up in the hands of the neediest. Its not. Even when you look at the last bill, we wrote a piece based on scripture that says, lets you take care of the poor, the least several scriptures talk about the we talk about the evil inside the 2 trillion bill. That corporations immediately got 1. 5 trillion early and then 500 billion. Think about that. Two weeks earlier we couldnt afford health care, couldnt do living wages. Now we have people working on the front line, many lowincome jobs, we say theyre essential, not being treated like essential workers. Dont have health care, paid sick leave. So what happens . People end up not going to get treated, they cant stay home. We give all this money to corporations. What if instead, we had done the Poor Peoples Campaign has been saying, make sure everybody make sure everybody pays sick leave and living wages. Then what happens is we close the fissures. Because they tell us in Public Health the pandemics will always expose the marginalizations, the inequalities that already existed prior to the pandemic. For instance, President Trump would say theyre just hearing about these disparities. That is either because ineptitude or outright intentional decisions to be ignorant of these realities. Furthermore, President Trump has promoted and many in the Republican Party have promoted the suppression and every state has a its also a state that has denied medicaid expansion, denied living wages, fought unemployment, fought paid sick leave and union rights prior to the pandemic. So we have a situation of inequity prior to the pandemic and the pandemic is exposing those inequities but forcing a time of consciousness saying were going to change. You have to deal with the inequities and we ought to be we must put that money towards closing these fissures if were going to close the length of time that it stays in society. I want to end your message, were a few days away from easter. I understand were a few hours away from you having a town hall with other faith leaders in the muslim and jewish communities. Whats your message today . You know, every major religion during this time, this ramad ramadan, when its passover or whether its christianity, its a time of deep repentance. All of them connect back to how society is treating the poor and what the need to repent. Passover began when pharaoh was oppressing poor people. Ramadan doing that time, remember those who are poor and those who do not have. In christianity, the last thing jesus was talking about headed toward the cross was, let me tell you how youre going to be judged as a nation. When i was hungry, did you feed me, when i was sick, did you care about me. When i was a prisoner, did you visit me . Those are the considerations. Not just praying and having a personal relationship. These holy seasons are called to question the unholiness of society and to challenge us to do right by the least of these and understand, until we do that, then our society is always broken and it makes us more susceptible to these dangers. This is a time of great repe repentan repentance. A resurrection of moral consciousness in this country and apply that in our public policies. Reverend william barber, we appreciate your time. This morning, millions of children are out of school because of the coronavirus pandemic, which is a major adjustment for their parents, too. Cnn contributor Mary Katherine ham knows about parenting through a crisis. Her husband jake passed away unexpectedly. Suddenly, she had to adapt to life as a single parent. In her new piece in the atlantic, she applies lessons she learned to parenting through todays pandemic. She joins me now. First of all, thank you very much because i read this story yesterday after i had exploded on my son for virtually no reason. I felt terrible. This made me begin to feel a little better. You write basically, what if you woke up one day and had to be a completely different parent than the one you were the day before. Thats how i was thinking. I dont know how to be a teacher. This isnt what i signed up for. Thats what a lot of people are going to. I feel you on blowing up on your kids no reason. Weve all been there. As we were going into this new period and people were saying to themselves, im in the a homeschool mom or dad, how do i do this . It a occurred to me that it reminded me of the time after my husband died when i had to shift gears really fast. Theres a lot going on. We have a lot of feelings going on, theres economic stress, theres disorientation. My thought was simple. From that time in my life, the parent you are today is not the parent you have to be tomorrow. You can shift. It is hard. But i wanted to sort of give people some things that i stumbled on that helped me make a mindset change, which made changing easier for you. The parent you are today doesnt have to be the one you are tomorrow. It wasnt for no reason i yelled. One of my sons locked the other out of the house. It was justified. But maybe not justified to the extent i carried it through. You write, this is what struck me first. You say it sucks, acknowledging and accepting this is key. Yes. Because look, grief has a lot of stages that i really do think thats something were all going through, mourning a way of life that has passed for the moment. All those steps and grief dont come in order. You can experience them all at one time. So acceptance is helpful for just taking the next step. You have to just tell yourself, okay, this is very hard right now. Its harder for different people in different ways. But what am i going to do with the cards ive been dealt . One of the things that a psychologist who studies children in families going through transition has found is that if you accept it and sort of begin new traditions around your new normal, that can be helpful to your kids transitioning. Prove it to yourself with small wins, you write. Yes. A couple things. One, when youre in a crisis situation, the idea of forever is very, very hard. Thats why when School Started announcing there would be no school this year, parents were like wait, what . They thought im going to do this for a couple of weeks. Give yourself small goals and short time horizons. You can be the parent you want to be tomorrow, for a couple of hours and phone it in for the rest of the day. If you do one thing per day that makes you a little better as the parent youre trying to be in this very tough situation, you will feel stronger every day. If you just get a tiny bit better. The thing i did in a time of crisis, i knew i had to feed my kids breakfast. That was a simple, i was doing the thing i was supposed to do as a mom. Bacon is therapeutic for me. It meant that i started off the day with my one little win. If that was the only win, that was okay. But i built on that over months. You say believe in your own abilities. Yeah. So parents the main thing i saw that a lot of people were saying, i dont know if i can do this. Its fair to be concerned about that. But i do think it can handicap you if you dont recognize your aint to change. If youve been a parent for any length of time, youve changed in ways that you never envisioned before you were a parent. Including the fact that you definitely let your kids go out in a princess dress or spiderman mask and you swore you would never do that. You have lost that battle. Adapting is a skill that you have. Telling yourself you dont wont help you get through the next couple of months and this huge transition were going through. Yes, there are so many other concerns and people think, oh, my gosh, it seems like a luxury to think through all of this. But if you have a mindset that tells you, you can walk through this in small steps, every single day, it will be tough but you will give yourself a path forward. Let your kids inspire you, you write about that also. I mean, they are such sources of joy sometimes in these dark moments. Its wonderful. Mary katharine ham. Thank you for being with us and writing this. I found it incredibly gracious to compare what you went through to what were all going through right now. And because of that, so incredibly helpful. I really appreciate it. Thank you so much. You guys hang in there out there. Get some small wins. Write your own story. Control what you can control. Because there are things i may be the one in the princess dress by the end of the day. Thank you for being with us. I appreciate it. Thank you. That was so helpful, john. Im glad you guys had that conversation. Now we want to take a moment to remember some of the nearly 15,000 americans who have died from coronavirus. Lets take a look at whats happening this morning across the country including the upcoming potential hot spots of washington, d. C. , baltimore and philadelphia. We have reporters across the country to bring us the latest. Im ed lavandera in new orleans. The latest coronavirus statistics in the state show a mixed bag. The number of deaths spiked in a big way, 70 new deaths announced, but the number of people using hospital beds because of coronavirus has dipped. Thats the first time we have seen that. And for two days in a row we have seen the number of people using ventilators has also dropped. The governor said they hope this is the beginning signs that the trend is starting to look in the right direction, that the curve is beginning to flatten. But here Health Officials are saying it is still far too early to tell for sure. Im omar jimenez in chicago, officials are on the verge of getting operational a refrigerated warehouse to potentially store bodies in the midst of this coronavirus pandemic. Day one, they say theyll be able to receive 400 bodies. But their capacity will be well over 1500. It is a place they say they hope they dont have to use, but the reality is it is a place theyre preparing to use. Im erica hill in new york. Just across the river in new jersey, governor murphy ordered all nonessential construction must cease by friday night. He has also said that all essential retail, this includes Grocery Stores and pharmacies must limit their occupancy to half of the approved capacity and all employees and customers must ware face coverings.
