The latest numbers should give both buttigieg and sanders some momentum heading into New Hampshire, but it is sanders that is cashing in the most. The Sanders Campaign has Just Announced a massive fund raising haul of 25 million. Four of the contenders appeared at a cnn town hall last night. Town halls, i should say. Plurl. Including joe biden who said he expected to do better in iowa. The other big story this morning, the senate acquitted President Trump of abuse of power closing the book on the impeachment trial. A the first senator ever to convict the president of his own party in the impeachment trial. He bucked his party to find the president guilty of abuse of power. Already he is being hit with savage attacks. President trump plam planning to make a statement in just hours, President Trump. Joining es now Bianna Golodryga and joe lockhart. I love it when you tell me things are happening in just hours. Stay tuned. I will. Hi. Should i start this . Lets do it. Joe, these new numbers i think with 1 10. What a mess. Actually been saying all morning it robs the narrative going into t this. Its an embarrassment for the Iowa Democratic party. I dont subscribe to the theory its an embarrassment for the candidates. They had nothing to do with it. The republicans are piling on about how democrats cant even count the votes. Thats silly. What it does do is it kind of froze things in place. And Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders who have both done really well were as you say robbed. It is a loss for them. Youll have Rick Santorum talking later in the program, i think, about what a loss it was for him when he won and he it was 30 days later. Generally out of the race by then. So everything shifted to New Hampshire. They lost it. But you know what . Theyre going to go and have to win New Hampshire. And if you look at the polls, Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg are at the top of the polls. Theyre going to fight it again there. Pete buttigieg was certainly robbed of what would be quite a story. Even tying Bernie Sanders would have been a giant deal. It was robbed of that. But then for a day, he was holding a slim but notable lead in the Iowa Caucuses. Right . But then it turns out i guess the question is now what . What and how can the candidates expect the race to go . I want you to note that Elizabeth Warren is close to call to the top. What do you see here . So the challenge was if you had a crisp, clean result on monday night, you know, whoever won bernie or pete would have benefitted. The whole thing got buried under the story if you were just talking about the real challenge for biden in New Hampshire. And frankly a number of the other candidates is they have spent a stunningly little amount of time there. It is tiny because a lot of them were looking at the polls. They saw that Bernie Sanders was very strong in New Hampshire. They thought were going to throw all our eggs in iowa. You saw joe bidens campaign redirecting planned Advertising Money from New Hampshire into iowa. He camped out there. They threw everything in there and had a very disappointing result. You had a number of candidates basically marching into New Hampshire needing a great result. But theyre sort of politically naked. They havent done the work you need to do in erm thes of ground game and advertising to give themselves the best chance of winning there. Theres obviously a debate which becomes very important now. And we saw from the last campaign in 16 with remember marco rubio had that terrible moment where Chris Christie sliced him up. And that was the end of his campaign. So there are people, you know, looking for that kind of a moment on friday night. Well, Bernie Sanders just released his fund raising numbers. And they are stunning. 25 million raised in january alone. Basically 650,000 donors. Is it time to call Bernie Sanders the front runner . In his mind, he considers himself that. We know hes not going anywhere. This may have been a set back for both he and Pete Buttigieg to at least proclaim that either one of them were the victors this week. But theyve been going out on television and their surrogates have been going out there. Theyve been out there campaigning as if they did win. For them much less, rugt . Hes losing money quickly. There was a lot of disorganization we saw in iowa. And as jonathan said, theres not much time and not much effort spent in New Hampshire. So what does that mean Going Forward and what does that mean for South Carolina . The voters that he clearly needs. Theyre all watching this now. Theyre voting for the person they think can beat donald trump. If theyre going to start questioning that, hes in a heap of trouble. By releasing this number last night, 25 million. Just context. Bernie sanders raised 20 million. Barack obama raised 36 million in january of 2008 was a mammoth haul. Granted iowa was earlier then. But Elizabeth Warren just canceled or redirected or pulled back on ad buys in nevada and South Carolina. Pete buttigieg was in a fund raiser in new jersey. So i think that the bernie Sanders Campaign releasing this number is to say look at us. We dont have to debate whether sanders is the front runner. He is the front runner. There are some advantages to that also. You know, hes not had the sort of joe biden front runner scrutiny. Hes not had the Pete Buttigieg moment where they took his short career record apart. But he is. And, you know, one of the things about one of the reasons biden hasnt spent more time in New Hampshire is hes raising money differently than Bernie Sanders. He has to go to new york, chicago, miami and spend time with big donors because thats the model hes using. Bernie sanders has to go to sleep at night knowing people are online giving him money while hes sleeping. In the past nine months hes gone from crazy uncle bernie to somebody who is a has been who Elizabeth Warren is going to be taking over for and having gone through what his campaign did with hillary, we read all of these stories. Now he is the front runner and needs to be treated as such. Bernie sanders was always going to be with his base a significant player. Maybe not the front runner but a close member to dub tlmp a lot of false narratives out there. Now people are voting. Lets look at the town halls. Joe biden had this authentic moment where he has been talking on the campaign trail more about his stutter and how he has st g struggled with it. Listen to this. I had a mother who had a backbone like a ramrod and shed look and go, joey, look at me. Youre handsome, youre smart, youre a good athlete. Dont let this define you. Every time id walk out, shed reinforce me. It really matters. I would practice and practice and practice. Because i was determined. Determined to overcome it. I was led to believe i could. And i basically did. Joe, i know you were struck by that. Because of the that is the every man quality that joe biden brings. Yeah. Its rare in politics that you get a moment where you get to demonstrate something thats really important in elections. Thap you understand what other people are going through. Joe biden there wasnt just about stuttering. It was personal struggle. My thought is ive done five of these president ial campaigns. Its very rare one of these things that you get a moment where you get to show who you really are. After you have campaign disappointments is a moment like this where people say well, where was that joe biden in iowa . Can he use Something Like this to turn his Campaign Around . Look. I think people okay. He had a terrible showing in iowa and needs a strong one in New Hampshire. But i think theres also the risk of overinterpreting results. I mean, i dont think this is the first time joe biden has shown his authentic self on this campaign. I think hes showing this almost everywhere he goes. Hes not scripted. He does have these emotional moments with people. People come up to him. You know, hug him and he comforts people. And thats where, you know, what hes been doing the whole time. The real question is if Bernie Sanders has a strong victory in New Hampshire and then obviously nevada is another strong state to him, do you start to see that africanamerican support drip away from joe biden . He becomes the only senator in history to do so. I am profoundly religious. My faith is at the heart of who i am. Knew being tasked with judging the leader of my own party would be a great task. I was not wrong. Whether the president committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a high crime and misdemeanor. Joining us now we have Rick Santorum. Senator santorum, great to see you. You obviously have a long history with mitt romney. You ran against him for president in 2012. What did you think of his words yesterday . Look. Im sort of two minds of this. Mitt romney as you say had this cathartic moment and felt like this was his call to history. I think that mitt romney has been looking for his call to history and felt like this was a moment to sort of stand up to a president that he doesnt like. He doesnt see see as a man of high character. Who is prudent and i think through that lens, he felt he was doing the right thing. On the other hand, i look at the consequence of what hes doing. And i think most of his colleagues are not going to be particularly happy with him. To get control of the senate and try to defeat a handful of republicans who are up for reelection so the democrats can take the senate. And i think mitt romney voting with the democrats on this really makes these vulnerable republicans more vulnerable. And i think thats where the pushback i think inside the caucus is going to be a lot harder on him. You make it sound more calculating than mitt romney did. I mean, when you said hes been looking for his call to history, you know, he said that its about his faith. I know what he said. But, you know, im sure that was a motive. But i dont think anyone acts on one particular motive when it comes to that. You think of a lot of different things. I know that you think about how youre going to be viewed in history. Everybody who casts that vote thinks about how is this going to stand up to history . I think what most republicans felt is that removing a president i think people sort of pass off this idea that removing a president the votes to remove donald trump, the impact on the country today. Can you imagine had the senate just because mitt romney gave a moving speech, could you imagine if donald trump had been convicted what this country would look like this morning . People dont think about those consequences. Well, i think republicans did think about those consequences and what it would mean to a nation to remove this president right now and ban him from running for the election. You want to talk about disrupting the country. That would really disrupt this country. A country thats already fractured. I think what republicans did was the prudent thing given the charges that were relaid. I dont think what mitt romney did was prudent. So i accept that fact that he felt compelled by that, but i dont think he considered all the aspects of what his decision was about. He considered the political consequences that would come his way. Yeah. How about the country . Thats what he didnt talk about. He didnt talk about the political consequences of his vote to the country. Well, he sort of did, rick. He did talk about what compelled him. He talked about his faith. He talked about his conscience. Then he talked about why he wanted to vote this way. Here he is explaining his vote on with chris wallace. Watch this. Its hard for me to imagine a more serious attack on the constitution and on a republic like ours than saying that a president would be able to enlist a Foreign Government to corrupt our election so that our president could keep in power. Thats what happens in at atocricies. I dont believe this was corrupting the election. Hes asking a Foreign Government for help. He asked the Foreign Government for help which again on an investigation that many of his advisers are saying was a legitimate investigation. Against his political rival. Ultimately, the president decided not to do any of the things that he was after it came to light. He didnt decide this on his own. After the congress basically said we want you to release it, he did it. He had other reasons not to release it. Number one, he doesnt like to begin with. Understood. And was mentioned in the call. I get it. To say that romney is this voice of conscience, i just i think his judgment was flawed. And i think the consequence to things that he says he cares about is going to be potentially profound in the United States senate if we end up losing a bunch of these seats. I dont think thats going to happen. Well, lets talk about that. Do you believe that he now is on no mans land . That what happened to what does this look like Going Forward . My guess is people are feeling what im feeling Going Forward. Everybody has the right to vote their conscience and i accept that. But at the same time, recognizing the political fallout is going to some political fallout will come to him. Hes not up for reelection for four more years. You have people on the firing line where people on the vote is going to be used to beat them up pretty badly in a lot of purple states. And that i think is whats causing what will cause most of the bad blood in the shortterm. Hey. While we have you, rick. I want to talk about whats happening in iowa. Oh, iowa. Another thing i have a little experience in. You really do. Just to remind people in 2012 you waited 16 days to find out the results. 16 days later when you won the Iowa Caucuses, history the die was cast. People are talking now that bernie and pete have been disadvantaged by having two or three days of not knowing the winner. Imagine if someone, you know, and this i wrote this on cnn. Com oped. Its more important to get it right than to get it fast. Imagine had Elizabeth Warren declared the winner or bernie been declared the winner, ultimately find out that buttigieg was two weeks later. Well, the lift for bernie winning iowa leading in New Hampshire would be a pretty big thing saying how do you stop bernie. Thats pretty much what happened in 2012. So look. These as you can see in this, its a very close race. Youre talking about three delegates, three state delegate votes. Less than 1 10 of 1 . Thats a close race. And, you know, this is thats great. Its great to have that, but you got to get it right. And you got to get it right the first time. Too late. Theyre doing it the right way. Okay. Theyre doing it the right way now that theyre waiting to take their time. But they didnt do it the right way. They made fundamentalal mistakes in the app and everything else. Yes. Im not giving them a pass. Im saying given the mess that they had in front of them, they havent tried to rush out there and just get a winner which would have been a big mistake. Very quickly, do you think its time to call it quits on the Iowa Caucuses . You know, look. The answer for me is no. Only because i just believe certainly on the republican side, its time to call it quits on the its very different than how the democrats caucus. Now it is. Republicans have you go in and cast a ballot. Theres no grouping people together. Theres no reallocation of delegates. Thats a very complex and i think antiquated process and not necessarily consistent with republican and democratic norms. So i would go back to go to a very simple straightforward caucus. You have a popular vote winner. A much easier way of reporting and you dont run into these complexities. Rick santorum, we appreciate you sharing your personal experience in all of this with us. He was being even keeled. Mitt romney was declared the winner in iowa. It was much worse for rick. For 16 days romney was the winner and it turns out it was santorum. He said imagine it was warren declared winner and then it was one of these other two. Yes. So the impeachment trial is over. What will House Democrats do now with some of these outstanding issues . And you can take the words of several senators that the house managers basically proved our case through overwhelming evidence and documentation that the president abused the power of his office. And obstruct congress ability to basically investigate that abuse. And so, you know, my prayer, if you will, is always that we would be strong. That we would present the evidence in a clear and concise way. That not only the senators would understand, but the American People would understand. We never could control the rest of the story. I think that Mitch Mcconnell would make it quite clear in the beginning of this story that he was going to coordinate. There would be no daylight between him and the white house. And the greatest fears or one of our greatest fears about this case is realized the day that the senate voted to not hear from witnesses or vote it do not subpoena. So we did our job and were going to move forward. Those republican senators who all voted to acquit the president , what they basically say is yes the president made the phone call. Yes, there may have been a quid pro quo, but they did not believe it was an abuse of power. They for whatever reason found there to be some distinction there. I want to ask you about some official business though. Whats next for john bolton . Let me go back to what you just said. Well, they believe the behavior did not rise to the level of impeachment, then why did they all start off with well he did nothing wrong. Theres nothing to see here. Then it was, yeah, it was the perfect call and certainly there was no quid pro quo. And then it was, well, there was a problem with the houses process. And then it was oh, well. He did it, but it doesnt rise to the level of impeachment. So i just want to make sure the American People clearly understand what happened there. With regard to National Security adviser john bolton, i mean you heard the statement from our chairman that we asked them or asked the attorney to submit an affidavit. They refused to do that. And so well see. I mean, whether we the house calls him in or not is really a decision that will be made by leadership. But i personally do believe that that is still an open chapter out there. And if for nothing but the historical record, i certainly am very interested in hearing what mr. Bolton had to say. But well see moving forward, you know, well catch our breath. Let me ask more about that. For the historical record. People like lamar alexander, you proved that the call happened. You proved that there was a quid pro quo. Having john bolton affirm that wont chaung our mind. What will it achieve . If we go back to every normal trial and every normal courtroom, whether its not a coverup or a coordination with the defendant. You would want to hear the complete story. If you had six people who were standing on the Street Corner and witness a bank robber, you would never say no reasonable person who would say, well, lets just only interview three of them or four of them. We will drag all six of them in to hear what they have to say. Im certainly very interested. I know the American People are interested. The only people who arent interested in hearing what john bolton has to say is the president and his enablers. But its for the historical record though. At this point, the verdict was in. They voted to acquit the president. But certainly he was not exonerated. And now we all should understand why bob mueller said if he could exonerate the president , he would. Obviously he said he could not exonerate it. I think we all have a clearer picture into that. But at this point, i just think the record is not complete without hearing from the president s former National Security adviser. This was a National Security issue. And i just think that the American People deserve to hear the complete truth. The senators obviously chose to read it in his book which i think is very shameful. John bolton could have come forward a press conference and made whatever statement it is he would have liked to make. I do want to ask you about the moment yesterday when mitt romney announced that he was going to convict the president. What did that feel leak for you . How surprised were you . Let me just say this. Being a woman of faith and in every interview if i was asked the question, my statement was ooum not giving up on the senate until the verdicts in. And i just maintain that. I had to believe that there would be at least some senators on the other side of the aisle that would remember their oath that would be true to their oath and their moral compass and do the right thing. Let me just make this quite clear. Senator romney was not standing with democrats. Senator romney was standing with what he knew to be right versus wrong. So it gave me hope as a former Law Enforcement officer. When the evidence is overwhelming, the testimony from Career Foreign Service officers is overwhelming and senators just choose to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to it. Thats quite unusual to me. And to hear mitt romney not stand with us and not stand against the president but to stand up for what he has done all of his life. And thats his faith and his oath. And those who have tsa prewhich according to that letter, the new law that went in effect here in new york, a greenlight law which really allows undocumented immigrants to get licenses, drivers licenses here in new york but doesnt share their information with immigration officials, it basically says, according to him, that a Government Official cant get information to verify those applications. And he also said in that letter that, quote, it will impede i. C. E. Objective of protecting the people of new york from any threats to National Security and public safety.
