Allegations and acostas future. Joe biden told chris cuomo that senator Kamala Harris her attack on her husband at the first debate came as a surprise. Both jill and joe biden are opening up about their sons health struggle. We want to bring in joey jackson here, our cnn legal analyst to help us understand whats going on in the Jeffrey Epstein case. First, sarah, lets talk about the politics of all of this. Can alex acosta survive this now that we know he decided to do this sweetheart deal so beyond all possible doubt what others would say would be applicable in a case of a sex offender with this amount of victims. And in the plea deal he didnt even alert the victims. Thats one of the egregious things. Do you think he politically survives this . First of all, and this is great testament to journalism in general, we wouldnt know about all this but for a lot of work of journalists behind the scenes. Its interesting. Yes, nancy pelosi came out last night on him for him to resign, but so far none of the democrats have said so one way or the other. Which is frankly, probably not a very smart political move. I think voters are kind of sick of that game but thats the d. C. Game at this point, maybe. Theres so many levels to this. One of the emis the legal side to it with the explicit criticism from the current justice department, the u. S. Attorneys office, the Southern District of new york on alex acosta whos in the cabinet, david, and just the fact Jeffrey Epstein whos charged with sex trafficking is someone who the president of the United States knows and was friendly with, someone who the former president of the United States, bill clinton, knows and was friendly with and traveled with. Really an extraordinary reach to this case. Yeah, i mean its seedy. Those connections, the quote from President Trump, cringeworthy, talking about how epstein liked women, beautiful women on the younger side and certainly liked his social life as he told new york magazine. And now youve got a sitting cabinet member whos attracting a lot of unwanted publicity for the president. He may ultimately cut the ties even if acosta stands by what he did, the deal he made under those circumstances. It is worth pointing out this was known, he was vetted. He was vetded by the senate. As we discussed last hour, senator tim kaine of virginia asked him about the deal. It makes it look like a horrible deal for someone rich and powerful who could get off. Its sickening. And that will have it be looked at. Itll be curious now how secretary acosta addresses that and whether he stands firm on it. Hell get the president s support for doing just that because weve seen the president back people who take a strong stand. With this number of victims, their age, with just the scope of what the allegations against epstein were, the charges against him, a plea deal like this . The simple answer is no. Lets be clear what this is. This is just frs the rich and powerful and then theres justice for the people who dont have the power to get justice. We think in the interest of justice there are conditions you can meet and satisfy and we can hold it in the debate. But in the context of how all that happens it does not, does not happen when you have 36 people who where there are allegations there as heinous as these are and carry as much time as they do. So clearly there had to be Something Else that was amiss. And i dont think its a mystery public corruption was investigating this case based upon how did the sweetheart deal come about . But its the normal cost of events when you go in and negotiate with prosecutors you talk about whats reasonable. We know what the law says, what the conduct is. And the law said, i think, correct me if im wrong, 45 years to life in prison. Thats what would have been reasonable. Whether that sentence would have been reasonable is another question. I think what you have to look to is what is the maximum exposure. And ive never seen an instance where youre luking at life in prison, where you get a deferred sentence and then you get to go out and work and earn an income. Any double jeopardy issue here . Its sort of the defense epsteins team is putting forward here. I think theres another defense. Double jeopardy i think youre going to have for a very significant reason. There was no adjudication of the matter. He bunt tried, convicted, it was deferred. To that extent you can exhume it, and you have other chargess that potentially werent mixed up in this. I do see perhaps a contractual argument. To what extent should he have relied upon an agreement from the government saying were not going forward. Lets move onto what President Trump is thinking about, whats on his mind this morning, and sarah, that is what should happen to the ambassador the British Ambassador to the u. S. It was exposed, revealed that he said some unflattering things about President Trump in these confidential cables that he sent back to his home office. His job is to send his unvarnished assessment what he is seeing, whichever country hes in. Thats usually what ambassadors are supposed to do, but somehow these cables were leaked, maybe they were hacked. We dont know the back story of who leaked these or how they became public but now President Trump is basically declaring him that the u. S. Will no longer work with him. Is this also how it was supposed to unfold . Well, what an interesting few years and weve seen so many of these National Security leaks really undermine some of the relationships between the strong allies. You see the u. K. Stand biing bye ambassador for now. Youre going to find that diplomatically countries are going to have a find a new way to communicate, protect against leaks or youre not going to have ambassadors writing their true thoughts in these cables. One, were hearing from london this morning, the british Prime Minister is standing by the ambassador, which im sure hes wellknown in social circles and been there for some time, and also the president is going directly after him on twitter this morning, calling him the whacky ambassador that the u. K. Foisted upon the United States, is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. Thats the president of the United States speaking about the British Ambassador to the United States. And theres a question, david, about whether he was disinvited to a dinner last night. Theres a question whether or not ambassador derek will be disinvited to a white house event today with ivanka trump where he was expected to attend. Its so shortsighted. Fine, you can be offended if youre a president. But this is where President Trump acts like hes in some tabloid war in new York Real Estate circles or social circles instead of thinking about the presidency himself which is bigger than him. He has to worry about his representative, the United States governments representatives all over the world, their ability to give unvarnished feedback to the United States government and have that be free flowing. The question of leaks is very important and concerning. And the reality is that the president is making this a deal. The government is going to be in transition anyway, there could be a new ambassador, maybe not. But the relationship is so much bigger than this. The u. K. s ambassador to washington is important and here to for as played an Important Role as someone who not just speaks for the government, has strong relationships within washington, both on capitol hill and in the executive branch. But our relationship with the u. K. Is also base said on the head of state going and dealing with each other at that level. So thats not going to be broke mchb but, again, the president needs to protect his ambassadors around the world from this kind of response by a foreign leader. Standby if you will because up next jill biden, the wife of former Vice President joe biden, talks about the political attacks targeting her husband. Everyday progress all right, we have a cnn exclusive joe and jill biden sitting down with our chris cuomo, the democratic frontrunner and his wife. Theyre no strangers to really fullbodied contact politics but they admit they were caught offguard by senator Kamala Harris debate attack against the former Vice President over his record on race and segregation. Here is part one of chris interview with the bidens. I appreciate you guys taking this opportunity. Happy to be here, man. Thank you. This time, how is this different for you . Well, i think we knew this was going to be a little bit tougher. It feels a little bit different. Theres so many candidates in the race, but so far its going pretty well. So weve been in what, two months and things feel good. Biggest surprise for you so far . The Biggest Surprise i think was the debate. You know, i think probably kamala was a little bit of a surprise. I think thats the Biggest Surprise so far. Different position for you, fighting from the front, right . Youve been an underdog pretty much your whole career. Youve achieved Amazing Things but what surprises you about fighting from the front . Well, i knew whoever is in the front would have a target on their back. And i knew that was occurring. But what surprised me was the response of people out in the street, the people that mow matter where i am theres enthusiasm on all the talks about the hits and the res, but i keep having endorsement of endorsement. The governor of connecticut endorsed me, the leading africanamerican person here not here but waterloo endorsed me. The mayor of atlanta. I know sis a marathon, and i try to focus on just my feeling, whats happening in the street, whats happening when i go out. And its been its been gratifying. You know, ive been surprised not about the attacks but ive been surprised at the intensity sometimes of the attacks. It makes you second guess yourself . No, it doesnt. It makes me decide this race is about the future. And we can depot back and pick everybodys record apart. You take it out of context because no one knows the context at the moment. It just surprised me a little bit, some of the stuff thats come out in terms of the attack lines. But im not going to go there, and im just going to try to look, barack said it best in another context, you dont want to perform a circular firing squad. The only person that wins is the president of the United States. The. Did you think that joe biden had had an amazing run and that was it in 2016 . Did you think that was it . I did. And i think joe thought that as well. But, you know, once this president was elected people started coming up and to us and saying, you know, joe has to run, he has to run. And then charlottesville occurred and it sort of got louder, and jill, you have to tell joe you have to run. What did that do to you . How did you process that emotionally . I have always said i thought joe would be the best president and ive always supported him. And i know where his heart is. I know his values, and i think hes in such direct contrast to what we have now with President Trump. And so as i started to think about it and i our family did, i said you know what, its the right decision. Why is it worth it as someone who grew up in politics . You know whats going to be done to him. On his best day, at his best running at 105 you know what its going to be like and thats just the primary. Let alone a general election against one of the most fearsome politicians weve seen. Why is it worth it . Its worth it because its going to change the lives of so many americans. I mean, look what joe can do on education, on cleemt change, on foreign policy. I mean everything that hes worked so hard for. And that makes it all worth it. You said at a rally ayou want to talk big ideas, im going to cure cancer. Did you mean it that way . I did. What i meant was and ive said all along we can fundamentally change the face of cancer and i think well be able to cure every cancer. Were curing cancers now, chris. But the thing is we are devoted to that notion and theres so much think about what we can do in this country if we take the resources that are being wasted now and spend it on significant research, on cancer, alzheimers, on diabetes, on so many things. Ive been sitting down with the the government can actually rally enormous support it just seems to me, chris, i think you know me. Ive never been more optimistic in my life about the possibilities of this country. Why . Were so divided. The fact of the matter is were in a better position, our politics is broken but the public is not broken. The point of the matter is that theres so many opportunities. Weve led by the example of our power, all these years. Were in a position where we have the capacity to do so much, the greatest Research Universities in the world more than all the rest of the world combined. What bugs me, what bothers me is theres one big roadblock. And im not being mellow dramatic. Its donald trump, donald trump. And what hes done is everything everybody has done when they try to break down the barriers. Haz trying to divide us every day on race, ethnicity across the board. Thats the only way you can stay in power and it has to stop, chris. Because, look, if we cant bring it together were in real trouble. Americans want us to be united. We were just at a rally in iowa, and everyone at the rally were saying we have to work together, we have to solve these problems. We have to solve them together. One fight at a time, thats the general election. It seems the fundamental tension now is joe biden the right fit for this party at this time . Theyre coming at you notten policy but the way you discuss policy, the phrases you use, that you are not in step with their lingo let alone where they want to go. Well, let me tell you i think im more in step with the lingo than any of them. I was asked to go in 24 states, campaign through 69 candidates. You remember i got criticized for saying i want to take on the house of representatives, we took them on in issues of health care. Half of it my dad would say is showing up, making the case. The idea somehow weve decided our system doesnt work anywhere, i heard some of them saying were going to pack the courts, im going to do what trump did, you know, im going to go in there by executive order, what are we talking ability . Look, this is the fourth of july, man. Were celebrating what a gup of revolutionary folks did. They put down their life, their liberty, their sacred honor, why . For a value set. And if we give that up, chris, were in real trouble. Up next were going to hear more from jill biden. Shes going to come to her husbands defense again. Hunter came out in a Magazine Article talking about his struggle with Mental Health. Were going to hear certainly also more about their children. So more of chris exclusive with the bidens next. Now to part 2 of cnns exclusive interview with joe and jill biden. The former Vice President has endured family tragedies throughout his life. His first wife and their 1yearold daughter were killed in a car crash in 1972 and then his son beau lost his battle with brain cancer in 2015. Now joe bidens second son from his first marriage is facing Mental Health issues and addiction. And the bidens open up about his struggles. Watch this. Hunter came out in a Magazine Article talking about his struggle with Mental Health. I say bravo for him. And ill tell you what, hearing how the campaigns are negotiated, what does it mean points to a stigma. Nobody would have hev said that if hunter came out and said he had leukemia. Mental illness, Mental Health issue, oh, what does it mean . What has hunters health meant to you, and what do you want it to mean in terms of what you put into the campaign about it . Weve seen the struggle. Weve seen the struggle and we know that most American Families are dealing with some sort of struggle like we are. And i think they can relate to us as, you know, parents who are hopeful and are supportive of our son, and we will continue to be supportive. And i think that makes us more empathetic about helping other americans, and i think one this kid, im telling you you know beau, beau is my soul. Hunter is my heart. Hes been through some tough times but hes fighting. Hes never given up. Hes the most honorable decent person i know. I read that article and all i can think of is my god he gives me so much more credit as a dad. But i knew nothing about that article except he told me towards the end he had this long interview. But its a catharsis for him. Everyone has to deal with these issues in a way consistent with who they are and what they are. This man is the most generous, honorable man i know, and i am confident, confident hes going to make it. And look, its the idea that we treat Mental Health and quote physical health, theyre somehow distinct. Its health. We have to put more money into Mental Health, whether its for our education system, our veterans, whoever its for, we have to start to look at it, talk about it and put more money into it. Talking about it is huge, thats why i bring up hunter. Youve been hearing about your son. You got in this race. You knew everything they could find about hunter was going to come back and revisited. Discussing it as something you can beat, something you can treat, already thats a different dialogue than were used to hearing. Curing cancer, that would mean see much across so many level. Getting people to accept Mental Illness and Mental Health awareness is the same as any other abnormality, that could be huge as well. Its gigantic, and by the way its doable. Its doable. The idea somehow think of all the people out there, chris. One of the things we should be debating in this campaign is health care. Whether or not we have the adequate and whats the best way to get health care. When barack did i helped with the fordable care act. It was a fundamental break through in how we thought about how things should work. The party now wants to get rid of the aca. Medicare for all cannot exist with the aca. The idea youre going to come along and take the most significant thing that happened that any president has try today do and got done and dismantle it, it makes no sense to me. Four out of five people in the top polls right now think the opposite of you. Starting over i think would be a sin. They say youre either all in or its half measures that dont work. Let me tell you something, i noticed the measures in the Affordable Care act worked pretty well. Put 20 Million People back in getting health care. You notice none of them are saying they want to do that, and you notice none of them are saying but they are saying if youre satisfied with your employer based health care youve got to give it up. Look, we provide a medicare option, thats exactly what barack and i talked about in the beginning. Now things are changing because guess whats happened, the thing barack and i talked about, god love him, he never took credit for anything he shouldnt. Were going to make the case so people know what you did. It wasnt until they start today take it away they even realized it was consequential what barack had done. Now if you noticed in 18 we went out in all the campaigns, republicans say i want to get rid of preexisting conditions. So its a different place. The public should be educated in a way that i believe theyve embraced it and im ready to take that on. One more question for you. Youre much more interesting. That i agree with. One more question. You mentioned senator harris at the debate. Ill talk to the vp about that as well. But when you were listening to things and hear the things were going to have to fight against this. You did not imagine, i would think ill ask it differently. Did you imagine one of the things youd have to deal with early on is whether or not your husbands past is basically bigoted. They could say i dont believe youre a racist, but as soon as that comes out, the crime bill, working with people who were seen to be obviously extreme thinkers and bigots themselves, busing, did you anticipate those, and does it make you feel differently about where this could be headed . You know i think they were looking at the past. The one thing you could not say about joe is hes a racist. He got into politics because of his commitment to civil rights. And then to be elected with barack obama and then someone is saying, you know, youre a racist, as soon as i heard those words they say youre not a but this all stinks. As soon as i heard those words i thought uhoh whats coming next. And i think the American People knew joe biden. They know his values, what he stands for, and they didnt buy it. You didnt think because, well, you took a hit in the polls. The polls are coming back up. So we just saw that today, and i think the more people get to know joe, then the higher the polls will get. All right, a lot of news in there on the defense of obamacare and how the Vice President intends to position himself on the medicare for all debate. A lot of news about hunter biden and news about the fact they sat down like this for that interview with chris cuomo. We have the best analyst in the business to analyze it next. All right, we just watched new parts of the chris cuomo interview with joe and jill biden, and there was a lot in there that we hadnt heard. Really interesting stuff. They ucabout hunter biden, his battle with Mental Illness in a way we hadnt heard before and also politics and issues and the Vice President s opponents in ways we havent heard before. Lets discuss with joe lockhart, senior political analyst and National Political reporter for the new york times. I want to go to you first and as we were watching it and listening to the former Vice President talk about the debate over medicare for all, he drew lines, solid lines that i havent heard him draw quite that firmly before on the issue of health care. What did you see . A couple of weeks ago i talked to joe biden in South Carolina and he said on the question of health care, we all agree on most of the issues and was kind of project unity, thats a different tone than he took in that interview. He was saying if you are trying to scrap aca for a medicare for all option like Elizabeth Warren, senator sanders, hes saying that is red line that he does not want democrats to cross. He said i will oppose any republican or democrat who is trying to scrap the aca. That is firm line he is trying to draw. And i think the bigger take away for me is that Vice President has spent a lot of the early time in his campaign trying to be above the fray, and that is the inevitable general election clash. What weve seen change during this debate is hes going to have to engage more with his democratic opponents partly because they have broughtham back downtoearth. Sarah whereby what jumped out to you . Definitely exactly the same as yall. I mean, that Health Care Conversation was new and a much firmer line than weve seen. I think it was a smart one. Youve seen some of the polling since the debate, certainly before the debate but even more so since on obviously Health Care Still being a number one issue, pocketbook issue for democratic voters. But, too when you ask them about for medicare for all option, they do not understand it, and so you can move those polls, 20 points or more depending on how you ask it, what you tell them about it, but i think its very smort for bidhis conversation, i want to have a conversation around this, sort of dip their toe in the water and pull it back when they realize its unpopular. Drawing a firm line here trying to suggest i am the mainstream. Listen, i think the idea of abolishing private insurance something about 180 million americans currently have, its an imperfect system but it is not i think in a general election sustainable to be abolishing that, and i dont think its sustainable in the democratic primary voters. Theres a lot of Energy AroundElizabeth Warren and bernie sanders. And sometimes Kamala Harris. Shes been on both sides of this a little bit. I think if you look at 2018 and look at the candidates who argued for shoring up and strengthening the aca, theyre the ones who did well. The people who argued within the Democratic Party nomination process for medicare for all did not do well. So i think it is a very both smart line to draw here and now in the primaries, but i do think the democratic nominee, whoever it is, and most of the candidates in the race on the democratic side are not for where sanders and warren are, you know, to be sustainable. They have to be building on the aca. I was interested in the talk about hunter, joe bidens son. When joe biden was deliberate in getting in for those many months we kept hearing is he in, is he out, we kept hearing hes thinking about his family, hes in consultation with his family. And, you know, the Trump Campaign has already tried to use hunter and his business dealings as fodder against joe biden. What do you think about them sort of i guess turning it into an asset about a public conversation about Mental Health. Joe biden is someone whose identity has come in terms of that personal tragedy, of course the tragic car accident as he ascended to the senate, and i was just in wilmington, delaware, talking to a lot of community that knows him and they talk about his family and how integral they are. I think as republicans have amounted up using bidens international lobbying, it is interesting to see the bidens come out proactively and thats something that causes us to relate more closely to the American People. We know Mental Health issues, addiction are issues top of mind for american voters. I think its something folks can commend but also gets them to answer some of the political questions folks have already shown the willingness to enter into that murk yr more personal terrain. It is interesting because for the bidens personal struggle and perseverance is more than just a brand, its what has defined so much of the life of joe biden over the last, you know, nearly 50 years. Yes, and, you know, not to put this all into political terms, but thats my job here this morning, and so what i saw was actually a very shrewd politician as well. Not in a bad way, but getting out ahead of something, inoculating it. I thought it was very shrewd, and theres a reason why his numbers are still 10 points up for everyone else and 10 points above President Trumps on electability. Everyone else is about tied and i think its moments like this, theyre relatable, yes, but also very, very smart. And in terms of the shrewdness, sarah, just to press on that a little bit do you think theyll be able to turn everything about hunter through the addiction or Mental Health lens . Is that what you hear happening here, whatever comes up for the next year on the campaign trail . To some extent i think, yes, i think a lot of americans are able to see that happening in their own families, directly, indirectly, given an Opioid Crisis sweeping the country. And so a lot of people do see their families dealing with addiction issues, Mental Health issues and they see the fall out of that which can be bad decision making. I think hunter biden was far more of a lienlt before that interview than he was after. Really interesting perspectives. Sarah, thank you very much. Our budget cuts are hitting honey bees hard. How that actually will impact the foods you eat. Thats next. Tmobile will match it. Need a few more reasons to switch . 1. Do you like netflix . Sure you do. Thats why its on us. 2. Unlimited data. Live in washington to explain why this so important. Well, the administration is participating these cost cutting measures as necessary to get the government working as a lean efficient entity. But farmers and be keepers are ringing the alarms saying scaling back on this Critical Research is going to have a Significant Impact on all of us, starting with the bees. Be populations already on the decline now facing an added blow as the u. S. Department of agriculture suspends collecting data for its annual honey be report, a critical tool for understanding the plummeting honeyBee Population. With the eventual loss of the Bee Population, what you would see is more desert than you would see healthy, vibrant landscapes. Their critical impact is on the food source. Its estimated that one third of the u. S. Food supply depends on the bee because it helps pollinate the food we eat including apples, avocados and grapes. Colonies facing threats from parasites, pesticides, habitat loss and climate change. In 2014 the Obama Administration launched a program to address the plummeting honeyBee Population. Directing federal agencies to track the problem and work on improving bee colonies as well as other critical pollinators including butterflies. The Trump Administration through the u. S. Department of agriculture now undoing those efforts. Last year reversing an obama era rule, barring the use of a chemical that is known to contribute to the decline of colonies. The epa has also granted emergency permission to 18 states. Under certain circumstances to spray an insecticide considered highly toxic to bees. We will defend the environment but we will also defend american sovereignty, american prosperity, and we will defend american jobs.
