Dominican republic. One of cnns affiliates on the island reports, this video capturing the shooting. You see ortiz fall to the ground as people around him scramble. Now, david ortiz is more than just a ball player. He is a touring figure in boston who helped bring that city together after tragedy. He is be loved by fans and players alike. The encouraging news this morning. Police and big papis family say he is out of surgery and out of danger. Well have much more details on that story. Meanwhile, a lot happening in the 2020 race. The majority of democratic hopefuls making their cases to iowa voters last night. Joe biden was not there. He had a family commitment. That allowed the other candidates to talk about him, and a new cnn poll captures the state of the race in iowa. Lets begin with cnns alexandra field on oush breaking news on david ortiz. A long night but a better morning for david ortiz, for his friends, for his family, for his fans. He is a giant of boston, a giant of baseball, shot in the back. The shooter apparently approaching on a motorcycle. David ortiz then collapsing. The bullet that went through his back, into his stomach. He was rushed to a hospital for surgery. His father overnight updated reporters. Translator the operation is over and he is stable. Were just waiting for the doctors to take him out of the surgery room. Hes resting right now. Now, there are no other damages we know of. He is stale. The investigation continuing right now. Several people with suspected ties to that shooting taken into custody. One of those people in a hospital injured after the bystanders who witnessed the shooting attacked some of those who they believed had been involved. A lot of thoughts and prayers sent to big papi, the legend himself, some from Pedro Martinez, his former teammate on the boston red sox, who talked about his friend, a strong man and reflected on the fact that he was relieved to know that big papi is out of danger. Alison and john, i only got to live in boston for a brief while. I can personally attest to the fact that that citys sports team has a profound way of bringing people together. I know people were up all night pulling for big papi. John, i know you were right there with him. I saw the news cross. I was already in bed. I had to read more. Who would shoot david ortiz . Yes, he helped the red sox win three world series and beat the yankees and that was huge. I could go on that for a long time. After the boston bombing in 2013 it was david ortiz who played a crucial role after the city had been shut down. The red sox game was the first big public event back. He spoke and listen to what he said. We want to thank you mayor, governor patrick, the whole Police Department for the great job they did this past week. This is our [ bleep ] city. It was that very bostonlike statement of defiance and pride that really set everything right. He is just be loved. You saw Pedro Martinez you cant get your arms around david ortiz because hes such a giant, physically a giant there. Everyone loves him. I brought my david ortiz action figure which i have in my office all the time. I wont take it out of the case because i dont want it to lose its value. I know there are so many people pulling for him. A lot of people shaking their heads. That video is scary to see the moment it happened. Its hard to see david ortiz. But i see the people scattering around him, how terrified everyone was around him as soon as they heard the gunshot and you can see him falling to the ground. In other words, just brazen, a brazen attempt on his life. And it feels targeted. It does feel targeted. Someone seemed to go in there just to shoot him. Why . Big news in the democratic race for president. 19 of the candidates, they were all in iowa for the biggest joint event yet. This comes as this brand new cnn Des Moines Register poll shows the race tightening in many ways. Bringing in josh Green National correspondent for Bloomberg Business week and cnn political analyst. Politics editor for the Des Moines Register and Jonathan Martin National Political correspondent for the New York Times and cnn political analyst. Let me put up the polls. The backdrop for this event in iowa, the poll shows joe biden out in front with 24 , Bernie Sanders eight points back at 16. Look how close it is in second. Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg all basically neck and neck. Those are big gains for Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg there. Rachel, let me start with you. The Des Moines Register was our partner in this poll. Whats the status insofar as you can tell, looking at the numbers, that event yesterday, of where the race stands in iowa . Were seeing in the poll, and some of what we saw yesterday at the 19candidate event is the race is defining itself into tiers. Theres your top tier and then theres a whole lot of people, and we saw some of them speak yesterday who just are not making an impact on the race in iowa yet. There were a significant number of the 23 candidates we polled who had zero percent or didnt get any responses at all. We saw some of those folks on stage yesterday, and you saw the crowd not quite reacting. Their speeches werent quite as punchy. So well have to see if they can do anything to move them up into this massive field and join those first tier people. Obviously the debates coming up could obviously move the field around, but i think thats really interesting, rachel, to hear how the crowd was reacting. If we can put up the big poll that shows that some people are at zero. Obviously, look at this, josh, a huge field as we know. But its interesting to see how the majority are at 2 or less, josh. I think thats partly a function of the fact that you have such a large field. Support is split among 23 different candidates. I think the other reason is a lot of these candidates probably dont have any realistic expect takes of winning the democratic nomination. Theyre in the race for other reasons and either dont have the them recognition or resources to compete in the way that would get them to register in the polls. I think what you really have are seven or eight candidates at the top who are serious, maybe a small group of others who have the potential to move up, some of the senators and a group of also ran. When you look at a poll like this, the voters dont look at it this way. Theyre looking at it in two defined tiers there. You see from harris on up, that seems to be where the voters say the energy is. I want to play some sound, jonathan from the top three trailers of joe biden that gives you a sense of how they are now trying to define the race. This is from yesterday. Were not going to win by playing it safe or promising a return to normal. We are where we are because normal broke. There are people who are ready for big structural change in this country. I understand that there are some wellintentioned democrats and candidates who believe that the best way forward is a middle ground strategy that antagonizes no one, that stands up to nobody and that changes nothing. In my view, that approach is not just bad public policy, but it is a failed political strategy. Failed political strategy, jonathan. They are taking on joe biden on the issue of electability which is fascinating. I think its safe to say that those barbs were aimed at joe biden. Youre very observant, john, to point that out. They dont want to say joe bidens name explicitly because its too early in the game and they dont want the mud to splash back on them. If you look at the crosstabs of this iowa poll and look at the selfdescribed liberal voter in iowa, you see buttigieg, sanders, warren and bide all bunched up. Theyre all trying to cut that same piece of the pie. If you look at moderate to conservative democrats, biden leads but with a Pretty Healthy margin. I think what youre seeing there play in those sound bites is an effort to break out with the kind of liberal base of the party, historically, a pretty good chunk of the iowa caucus electorate. The challenge is theres so many candidates in the race sliced in that same part of the pie, it can get sliced thinly. Thats the challenge forward wren and sanders, theyre both in the race and targeting very similar voters, talking about big structural change, no half measures, no middle ground. That could lead somebody else to try to take more of the moderation out of the party if at some point biden does come do down, and his numbers are fallen already. Rachel, its interesting to look at the issues that democratic voters say are most important to them. The right to abortion, preserving womens rights to abortion was number one at 79 . Climate change is a great threat. They want their candidates to be able to feel and channel that. 75 , restall the assaultedstyle weapons ban. Being on the ground, rachel, what do you think iowans want . I think the poll is a good reflection of what iowans want. What youll see in the list are some of the things that weve written about, that youve aired about, like the Green New Deal are not necessarily the thing that iowans are saying this is what were desperate for. Yes, theyre saying Climate Change is a threat, yes, we want our candidates to acknowledge that. Theyre not necessarily wedded to Something Like the Green New Deal. I thought the abortion numbers were really interesting. Thats something that not only comes from the federal government. But obviously a lot of action in states including iowa to restrict abortions. Weve seen that in some Southern States recently. Thats very much on voters minds. We saw within the last week joe biden changing his position on the Hyde Amendment which i think gives some people some pause. So there were in these polls, as jonathan just talked about, looking in those crosstabs, digging in a little deeper, a little weakness for biden. Well have to see how that plays out. Josh, were about out of time. I want your take on tariffs. Mostly because i think you agree with me in an argument ive had with alisyn all morning, about whether or not the president got much out of this socalled deal with mexico on friday. Youve been doing a lot of reporting on this. Whats your take . When you look behind the tweets, it doesnt seem theres much there. Trump tweeted that mexico agreed to buy billions in agricultural dollars. Bloomberg talked to mexican officials. They didnt have any idea what trump was talking about. Unless the white house comes forward with some concrete proof, some elements of the deal were not aware of. It seems like he tweeted he won the showdown and now well move on to Something Else without any real accomplishments. Jonathan, rachel, thank you so much. I see you stockpiling evidence on your side. It is quite compelling, i must say. If you agree, you get an extra question. Thats how the rules work. Democrats hold a series of hearings related to the findings of the Mueller Report. House democrats are hoping to put the Mueller Report back in the spotlight with testimony from a key watergate witness. In just hours former Nixon White House counsel john dean will testify before the Judiciary Committee. On wednesday the Intelligence Committee will hold a hearing on the counterintelligence implications of the Mueller Report. Joining me now is member of the House Intel Committee jim himes from connecticut. John dean is a terrific legal analyst here for us on cnn and provides a lot of insight about watergate. I know youre not on the Judiciary Committee. What kind of insight can he provide for the Mueller Report . Why bring a figure from 40 years ago to testify about something thats going on right now . Thats a good question, john. I guess i would say two things. Number one, john dean is one of the few people around and still sort of actively politically who remembers what it was like back in the early 1970s when the Nixon Administration went through Something Like this. Thats really valuable, john, because theres lot of misunderstanding about exactly what impeachment is. If nothing else, having john dean talk about the fact that what an impeachment looks like and then, of course, talk about what happens next. Theres a lot of americans who think if the house impeaches, thats it for the president. Of course thats not true. The senate would need to convict. The senate has never convicted in American History any president after impeachment, neither bill clinton nor Andrew Johnson back 100plus years ago. I think just talking about what this means. And secondarily i would say, john, whats really ugly i should say in the Mueller Report, the russia stuff is really ugly. The extent to which the Trump Administration welcomed the help. Were past the notion there was a crime committed. Mueller said there wasnt. Volume two which talks about the president s efforts to get rid of the investigation, to get rid of jim comey, basically to stop that investigation, the president s lies, it will be very interesting to hear john dean compare that behavior to the behavior that Richard Nixon engaged in that got impeachment proceedings going in the house back in the early 70s. I guess i get the Historical Impact and context of this, sort of the color it provides. Jeffrey toobin says maybe its time for some of the house investigations to investigate it. By that he means bring people before the committees that can add insight to what is inside the Mueller Report. John dean isnt in the Mueller Report. These two former fbi officials who youll hear from on wednesday not in the Mueller Report either. Your committee is talking about the counterintelligence implications. What does that mean . A lot of what was redacted in the Mueller Report, john, had to do with intelligence matters. Its redacted because it makes references to sources, to methods for gathering information, and that is part of this story that has not yet fully been told. What do we know about what the russians exactly did to prepare the many, many approaches to the trump campaign. Who is involved . What methods did they use . Did they use companies other than twitter and facebook . A lot of that information is not yet public. A lot of the redactions in the Mueller Report of course pertain to that. Its really important that at a minimum Congress Knows the full extent of the russian attack and ultimately the American People do. One of the really good things that comes out of this report is it has sensitized the American People to how they were manipulated in the 2016 election. One of the best ways to make sure it doesnt happen again is to make sure americans are on their guard when theyre on social media, or looking at a protest that comes out of nowhere. That may not be an authentic thing. The president says he reached a deal with mexico friday night to have the mexicans beef up their immigration security, particularly on their southern border which would include 6,000 Mexican National guard troops patrolling their southern border with guatemala. If, in fact, the mexicans do increase security and crack down on illegal immigration more, does that mean that the president s tariff threat was worth it . Well, i think thats a pretty easy question to answer. You have to imagine remember mexico and canada are our biggest trading partners. The president has been brutalizing them since he got into office. Does it make sense to treat your biggest trading partners, the people for whom this economy and its growth is critical, does it make sense to conduct Foreign Policy by saying im going to hold a gun to your head. Im going to threaten you with tariffs. Over time that will begin to wear very thin with all of our allies. I dont mean just canada and mexico. I mean europe, our allies all over the world. No. I dont think thats a good way to conduct Foreign Policy. Time will tell, john. It appears a lot of what the mexicans agreed to they had agreed to beforehand, well before this deal was struck. And the other thing was, i heard the former Mexican Foreign minister on the media yesterday saying, hey, in mexico, its always about say yes to everything, just dont say when. The numbers will tell the tale. Were not yet at a point where we can say whatever this deal involved, that necessarily slowed the approach of people to our southern border. Its going to take a while to see whether that is, in fact, the case. Asking you a question on democratic politics, you havent endorsed yet, have you . No, i have not. Ana navarro who is a republican but considering biden, she had bush acid reflux which is to say shes not sure the current democratic frontrunner joe biden is working hard enough. She wants to see him out there on the trail more, taking it perhaps more seriously. Do you see any element of that . Do you think joe biden is out there as much as he needs to be . I do. I understand hes getting a little press because he didnt show up at this iowa thing over the weekend. For gods sakes, the guy was at his granddaughters graduation. Look, im deliberately trying not to watch momentby moment, secondbysecond the president ial primary race 18 months out. Ive got other stuff to do. It would appear weve got, if anything, too many people in the primary race working very, very hard. No. I dont think theres anything to this notion that joe biden is not working hard enough. Hes out there an awful lot. Look, a lot of people know joe biden in contrast to some of the candidates. He probably has less of a need to get known out there than a lot of the other candidates. Nonetheless, hes working just as hard as the rest of them. Congressman jim himes from connecticut who will be watching very closely along with the rest of us for 18 months, thanks for being with us this morning. Thank you, john. The watergate matter was an inevitable outgrowth of a climate of excessive concern over the political impact of demonstrators, excessive concern over leaks, an insatiable appetite for political intelligence all coupled with a doityourself white house staff regardless of the law. That was former Nixon White House counsel john dean in his 1974 testimony 73 or 74 . Ill ask him. He played a pivotal role in president nixons resignation. Hell be back on capitol hill to talk about the Mueller Report this time. Cnn contributor john dean joins us now. John, its great to see you. Whats it like for you to watch that old video tape . Well, its odd. I was actually trying to sum mize my testimony at that point. They stopped me very shortly after that and said no, mr. Dean, you must read that testimony, which was 60,000 words and would take eight hours. Had i known that in advance, i assure you it wouldnt have been 60,000 words and closer to six. So i think that that date that you were there that we just saw the video was july 11th, 1974. June 25, 73. Thats interesting, because you appeared before the Judiciary Committee on the date im saying. Thats right. Thats when i appeared before the Judiciary Committee in the house. Today youll be back there all these years later. We have your prepared statements here, but i would rather hear it from you. Tell us what your overarching message is to them. Theres a little nostalgia because i worked for that committee at one point, too. The first government job i had and rose to be the minority counsel of that committee. I spent a lot of time in that hearing room and know some of the fellows on the staff but dont know any of the members anymore. What im going to try to do for the committee im clearly not a fact witness, but i hope i can give them some context and show them how strikingly like watergate what were seeing now and as reported in the Mueller Report is. So ive taken several examples from the Mueller Report relating to obstruction of justice which is their focus today and looked at those and made the comparisons. Care to give us a preview . Which do you think is the most apt comparison . The most apt . Wow, thats a tough question. Too many are too similar, but the fact that nixon was handson very early is just like trump, handson very early. The firing of comey is certainly not dissimilar from some of the actions that nixon took. Nixon waded in and tried to influence the fbi investigation as did trump. So there are lots of comparisons. Can i say, you say youre not going as a fact witness. There are those and even our own Jeffrey Toobin who suggested maybe this committee could be using its time in a better way than talking about watergate. Maybe the time that this committee is holding these hearings should be used on witnesses who are part of the Mueller Report. What would you say to them . The problem is i think theyd like those witnesses, too. Those witnesses right now are not available. They are stonewalling this committee. The Trump Administration is making it as difficult as possible for anybody on house side to do anything to learn about what their activities were or are. So i think they have to start somewhere. So a historical base to understand what is going on is a Good Foundation for them. One of those witnesses who you say is stonewalling with whom you see lots of parallel is white House Counsel don mcgahn. So since you shared that role with him, what do you plan to tell them about don mcgahns role . Don has said he feels himself torn between two different branches of government and that creates a conflict for him. Actually it was my testimony that the aba read during the watergate hearings that rang a bell in chicago and they decided to revise their code of ethics. They solved a lot of the problems that used to exist in representing an organization. Thats why don today represents the office of the president and not donald trump. I think his loyalty is to the office and not the man, and that lowers the conflict considerably. Hes got some ethics issues that i try to address. You do think he could testify. You dont think the privilege would cover him . No. I dont think the privilege would cover him. There are two reasons. First of all, theres something called the crime fraud exception. When theres any criminal behavior, that is not covered by any privilege, not by attorneyclient privilege, not by executive privilege, and some of these are crimes hes talking about. The other is, there has been a general waiver. The waiver occurred when mr. Trump released for public consumption the Mueller Report, and all those things that are in the Mueller Report that relate to don mcgahn, he is now free to talk about. President trump called you a nasty name over the weekend. How do you think youll be treated by his allies on capitol hill today . I havent seen his tweet yet. Hes called me nasty names before. I like that small club actually that im in, so it doesnt bother me in the slightest. Its a queue to his admirers that im not on his team. But i think they knew that before today. I think it is interesting, though. Its a good question. The republican allies of the president on that committee i imagine will go after you. What for, do you think . It seems the theater of it all is what interests them. What ive tried to play very close attention to are the rules of decorum of the house, where the house does not take the president s name in vain and accuse him of things that he hasnt done, to be very careful about that. I have gone out of my way to do that and was working on the Statement Last night to make sure that didnt happen. It will be fascinating to watch all of these years later, john dean making an on encore performance, return. Thank you very much. New york state alone has seen more than 800 cases since october. Cnn senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen has much more on this outbreak. John, this has been going on for so long that some are now wondering, should authorities try Something Different to get it under control . Anti vaxers in new york have fueled the largest outbreak of measles in the United States in more than 20 years. Now the states response to this enormous outbreak coming under fire. Our states inaction in the face of such an overwhelming Public Health emergency is appalling. Reporter in new york, parents are allowed to send their unvaccinated children to school. In other states like california, schoolchildren must be vaccinated. Also under fire, Health Authorities for not bringing in the u. S. Centers for Disease Control and prevention. The new York City Health commissioner says its not necessary. Rk and we more than 400 people are working hard, day and night, to make sure we bring this to an end. Reporter another issue, an anti vaccinate group circulated this booklet filled with lies to the states Ultra Orthodox Jewish community which has now become the epicenter of the outbreak. The state Health Department countered with these posters in yiddish, but badly bombinged the translation. Theyve got to do this right. They clearly were not doing it right. Reporter he says the botched ads are part of a larger problem. They have to reach out in a way that shows they truly get how this community works, the uniqueness of this community. Reporter have they done that . I think can do a better job, its clear, evident they can do a better job. Reporter now one group of women are taking matters into their own hands, a first of its kind event aimed at mothers. Theyre trying to do Something Different than what state officials have done. They set up these stations because they know what moms in their community are worried about. Do vaccines cause sids, autism . The answer to both of these questions is no. Organizers hope it makes a difference. Could women, moms be the key to ending this outbreak . Yes, yes i think so. Why is that . Because women are passionate about their children. If theres enough understanding, the correct decisions will be made. Reporter with dozens of new cases every week, theyre decisions that need to be made soon. Now, perhaps a positive sign, the number of new cases in new york, both in the city and the state went down from april to may, but still when i asked the new York City Health commissioner if she thought this outbreak would be over by the fall, she didnt answer. Alisyn. Fascinating, elizabeth, to see your story and how theyre now trying to tackle the information and misinformation. Thank you very much. Wildfires are spreading across parts of california, forcing hundreds to evacuate a six flaks flags amusement park. Cnns dan simons has more. Reporter as we all know, these fires are the new normal in california. We are covering the sand fire. This is the biggest wildfire to impact the state this year. You can see some of the charred landscape behind me. At this point its charred about 2,200 acres. What was especially noteworthy is over the weekend, pge cut off power to about 20,000 customers because the area was under a red flag warning which signals fire danger. Obviously the utility is under tremendous pressure after its transmission lines were found to have caused the campfire which destroyed the town of paradise this year. I think you can expect to see pge taking this action throughout the summer. Elsewhere in california, as you mentioned, you did have that dramatic fire in Southern California, impacting the six flags amusement park, a dramatic brush fire there as all the guests had to be evacuated. Crews seem to have that fire under control because the park will reopen this morning. In the meantime, with the sand fire containment about 20 , the fire has destroyed about nine or so buildings, no residences, about 100 or so people evacuated and crews seem to be gaining the upper hand. President trump very much on the defense this morning after reaching a trade deal with mexico on immigration. The president has been trying to explain the reasons he threatened to impose tariffs. I spoke with the president of mexico. I get along with limb very well. We made this deal, but this is very this is something the u. S. Has been trying to get for over 20 years with mexico. Theyve never been able to do it. As soon as i put tariffs on the table, it was done. It took two days. Thats not altogether clear. The New York Times report said a lot of the things agreed to were in discussions or already agreed to months previously. Lets get to the bottom line with senior political analyst john avlon. The fact the president is explaining, what does that mean . Roy kohn, his former con sig layer would say when youre explaining, youre losing. The president has been frustrated at the New York Times reporting which portrays him as the arsonist and then the fireman. Putting it out and declaring victory. Mexico already agreed to some of the provisions, particularly sending National Guards to the northern border to help stop the flow of migrants. One of the iraqi things the president is touting. It will resonate with his base, with the economy better than the economy. He feels acutely frustrated hes not getting the credit he feels he deserves. The problem hasnt been solved. Hes focused on the negotiation. Okay, i think we should give him a win in the negotiating category because it was either this it either happened on friday or two months earlier which was also his administration. So thats a win for the negotiating, but is it a win for the outcome and the problem . We dont know if this will actually stem the tide of migrants at the border. Thats one o of the real contradictions of the Trump Administration. Often theyll declare a win in the negotiations, but we dont see the actual implementation. The real questions about the actual details. Remember, usmca, something hes incredibly proud of, hasnt gotten through congress yet. The tariffs on mexico seem so out of left field. Dont look at the press release but what actually happens after the fact. The question is did he get something out of this tariff threat which rattled markets and has shaken the confidence of the Business Community in a way that may not stop. I submit he got mexicos attention . Did he get more with the tariff threat than he would have otherwise . He didnt get the Safe Third Party agreement, if you were reading the press and the leaks leading up to friday night, thats what the white house wanted. That was the big concession they wanted. At least as of now, they didnt get it. No. Theyre going to try to move the attention away from that because there are open items on the todo list. Again, he was also facing major pushback from republicans for really the first time. Here is a guy who has come in and contradicted all republican orthodoxy on free trade. Once you saw the potential of a trade war tariffs with mexico on top of the trade war with china particularly along the border state, people said this would be economic death for the country, at a time when things had been a rocky patch for the past month. The china trade war is far from resolved. To the larger issue, the numbers have spiked under President Trump. Thats not what he promised. The numbers of people showing up at the border, the u. S. mexico border have spiked, i mean to record levels. Two of the senators, Democratic Senators that weve had on, one on friday, one today, chris coons, ann merkley, laid the blame at President Trumps rhetoric and his policy of cutting funding for guatemala and honduras and el salvador. In other words, if he really is the root of the problem for the numbers speaking, we should be exploring that. This is one of the real paradoxes of this populist issue. Border crossings as john bermans favorite chart shows us, have been declining writ large since 2000 and spiked under President Trump. Raising the issue is an answer in search of a problem that has gotten worse under his watch. I need to get a new chart. They have legitimately gone up this last year. There is a humanitarian crisis for the number of people seeking asylum and numbers we have not seen. Something else going on thats been going on since friday with the jobs report out which showed a revision downward for the previous few months. Only 75,000 jobs created and a real concern in the economy theres something going on there. The president has been doing interviews this morning where hes been highly critical of the fed for raising rates before and not lowering them faster now. I think this plays into the idea that maybe the United States was willing to give mexico more than they would have otherwise in this deal because the president may be concerned this economy isnt going to be where he wants it to be headed into the election. The markets are nervous. It might be losing steam and hes on the attack on the fetd. Remember, it was may 3rd larry kudlow stood in front of the white house and said were killing it on the economy. Then the stock market proceeded to tank. The trade war with china is causing a lot of problems, as well as underlying numbers, not only the jobs numbers which dramatically underperform, but questions about manufacturing, not only at home but worldwide. Look, the president understands his reelection prospects are directly tied to the economy. Its the economy, stupid. What youre also seeing here, look at his comments. He was talking president xi controls the fed. Speaking about that power for himself. Jerome powell is the shock absorber for the larger economy, the administration, basically counteracting some of the president s irresponsible actions with saying look, well cut rates if necessary. If the economy slows down because of the trade war, hes going to cut rates. A really strange tail bagging the dog. Well do a reality check on that, john avlon.
