President trump disagreeing with his own National Security adviser and japans Prime Minister on the subject of north koreas missile tests. President trump says hes not personally bothered by north koreas first small weapons launches. Prime minister abe and john bolton says north korea violated u. U. U. N. Security council resolutions. President trump bashing former Vice President joe biden, making headlines on the trade war with china. Joining us to talk about all this, samantha, Senior Adviser to the National Security adviser under president obama. Boris sanchez in tokyo and catherine rampell. Its great to have you all with us. Boris, lets go to you. Youre on the ground with the president. What has been the japanese Prime Ministers reaction to the president praising kim jongun and essentially dismissing these most recent rocket launches for which japan is in the firing line . Reporter john, japanese Prime Minister shinzo abe was asked about the Short Range Ballistic Missile tests earlier today. He essentially said they were regretful. Clearly he has to walk a fine line as President Trump doesnt believe theyre something to worry about. Abe is tasked with a really difficult challenge. He has to essentially continue this strong relationship that he has with President Trump, heaping adulation onto him and praise and simultaneously deal with the fact that President Trump has this personal relationship with kim jongun in which he trusts kim jongun apparently more than some of his own advisers. So abe trying to get trump to sort of give him support for a bilateral meeting with kim jongun while simultaneously calling out the north koreans for violating u. N. Resolutions. Sam, kim jongun broke his promise to President Trump. President trump believed him in february after the fail of the hanoi summit. Ill remind you of what President Trump said when he believed kim jongun back then. One of the things importantly that chairman kim promised me last night is, regardless, hes not going to do testing of rockets and nuclear not going to do testing. So i trust him and i take him at his word. I hope thats true. Not going to do testing. I trust him. I take him at his word. Well, hes now done testing. I think President Trump is going to trust kim jongun until the cows come home because he doesnt want to admit hes been played by the north korean dictator. There is a slight difference. Kim jongun has only tested short range missiles. The promise he made was a little different, a moratorium on longer range missiles, icbms and nuclear weapons. These short range missiles affect not only japan and south korea, but americans. We have 54,000 troops in japan. They are within range of the rockets that kim jongun is popping off. President trump is not a great student. He wont release his transcripts. History shows he likes to make up facts and forget behavior thats happened in the past. North korea has done exactly this over a decade ago. In 2006 they were annoyed with the pace of negotiations. They popped off short range missiles. They escalated to longerrange missiles a few weeks later. President trump saying hes not disturbed by whats happening, but this could be the start of kim jongun testing the waters. Katherine, we believe in factbased debates here. I want to hold the president to account on comments last night regarding china, tariffs and who pays for them. Foolishly some people said the american taxpayer is paying the tariffs of china. No, no, no, its not that way. Theyre paying a small percentage. Our country is taking in billions and billions of dollars. Katherine, reality check that for us. Look, there are two Major Research studies both by elite teams of exists, people from princeton, yale, columbia, berkeley, the new york fed, lots of prestigious institutions, both of which have found that 100 of the tariffs, not only on chinese goods, but all the other countries weve waged trade wars with, are being paid by american buyers. We know right now the absorption of that cost is on the u. S. Side. Americans are paying those taxes, and tariffs are taxes. Its funny, this party, the republican party, the party of which President Trump is a standardbearer has historically been, if nothing else, consistently anti tax except for some reason when it comes to these taxes which again are raising the costs for americans. Its always strange, catherine, when President Trump says something demonstrably false. Is it strange . I think its normal. Its one thing to say falsehoods that are unprovable. Its one thing to say falsehoods that are your opinion. Its another thing to keep repeating the same falsehood when we have Business Owners coming on new day routinely telling us how much the tariffs are hurting them. Some of these were trump voters. Its just hard to know what the game plan is. Whats the end game. I dont know. Its like that old line, who are you going to believe . Me or your lying eyes or me or your lying Grocery Store receipt or whatever. I dont know what the end game is here, particularly since it seems like its going to be very difficult to unwind this conflict that we now have, this economic conflict, hopefully not a noneconomic conflict that we have with china at this point. Everything that trump has been doing all to bluster is only causing china to dig in its heels. Its increasing National Sentiment within china and its going to make it much harder to extract the kind of concessions that we want, not only because trump is basically insulting china throughout all of this, but weve also alienated, of course, all the allies whose help we need in reigning in china including japan. Your lying Grocery Store receipt is the least popular Hank Williams song. Boris, the president also doing something unprecedented overseas, attacking democratic rival joe biden and invoking kim jongun to do it. I want to play people that sound and hear what the trump team how theyre defending it in japan. Kim jongun made a statement that joe biden is a low iq individual. He probably is based on his record. I think i agree with him on that. So boris, that is unprecedented for an american president to attack a rival in domestic politics by invoking a dictator. How is the trump Team Responding to the criticism of those comments . As usual, theyre standing by the president , effectively saying that joe biden has demonstrated, via his record, that he isnt the best thinker in history. President trump did so from the podium, talking about the iran nuclear deal, suggesting it was a huge failure. The president , though, seems to be swayed by foreign leaders injecting themselves into american politics. This isnt the only instance of this. Keep in mind that shinzo abe himself talked about the tax breaks that the Trump Administration passed in 2017 and how theyve greatly benefited certain parts of the country. It just so happens that he mentioned important swing states that went for President Trump in 2016. I think this is partly a way for foreign leaders to show President Trump that they like him, that they have his back, knowing full well that the president is going to turn around and defend what they say. Sam, you have worked with Vice President joe biden. On the idea that a president overseas would attack and insult a former Vice President , is this something biden will respond to . I think hes busy focusing on Campaign Messages and doesnt need to focus on donald trump. You have kim jongun criticisming President Trumps political rivals, Vladimir Putin criticizing democrats. Lets wait for him to Say Something about joe biden. Its all pretty clear why theyre doing it. These despots are trying to manipulate President Trump by criticizing his rivals because they want him in the oval office in 2020 onward. Hes been pretty good for him. Russia is misbehaving globally. Kim jongun is making more weapons. I think kim jongun wants to ride the trump train all the way through 2020 because its so good for kim jongun to have trump in the oval office. I dont know thats going to be a bumper sticker. I want to stick with you for one final question because of your expertise. Simultaneous with this trip to japan, the Trump Administration is ratcheting up the presence of troops in the middle east with an eye towards iran. Whats your read of the some 1,500 troops deployed to the middle east against the rhetoric. I think it may be the tip of the spear. These 1500 troops are largely for maintenance. I dont think theyre authorized for combat. Theyll probably be to help with the operations and maintenance. If trz keeps escalating countries with iran, policies, we need more troops he said in japan today all he wants is a nuclear deal with iran. He doesnt want regime change. We had a nuclear deal with iran. He violated it. The administration laid out 12 steps that iran lad to take to come back to the negotiating table. We have the president all the way from japan, addlibbing from the podium on iran policy while 1500 more americans are being deployed to the middle east because hes so irresponsible in what he says and does. Chorus of democrats calling for impeachment proceed dungs to begin is growing louder. Numerous investigations into the Trump Administration as the president is vowing not to work with democrats until they end the probes. Joining me now, a real pleasure to welcome back president ial historian doris kearns goodwin. Shes an author and its a great pleasure to have you back on new day. Perspective is the thing we have least of. Tell us how you think President Trump is doing under this pressure of investigations and blocking legislations compared to past administrations who felt a similar type of pressure from congress. Surely his decision to say he will not work with the congress is the opposite of the stand that both president clinton and president nixon took when they were under investigations and impeachment. Most notably president clinton almost refused to talk about the investigation and simply talked about what he wanted to get done in congress. When he was under the senate trial, his state of the union was coming up. He said you have to delay it. He said, no, im going to deal with the problems of the country. It was a huge thing that was going on, but basically his Public Opinion polls went up because he showed the country he was dealing with the job and could compartmentalize. Even president nixon got a budget act through, a federal highway act through. He did lose his focus at one point, an extraordinary moment when he was giving his state of the union in 1974 in the midst of it all happening, and he meant to say we have to replace the discredited welfare system. Instead he said we have to replace the discredited president. So it was clearly on his mind. Needless to say, they thought it was better to do their job and let other people talk about it. President trump is the master of it all. Hes the one that wants to lead the band. It would be hard for him to cede this to someone else. Thats what you call a freudian slip from president nixon. You knew president johnson well, hes included in your book on leadership. He was the master of working with congress. He resuscitated jfks legislative agenda and passed mammoth legislation working with congress, working with congress and also working with republicans. You have a quote i want to throw up on screen for folks. There is but one way for a president to deal with congress, and that is continuously, inses antily and without interruption. How did johnson corral a congress including republicans to pass legislation at the time . I think what he meant by the incessant and incestuous was you have to Treat Congress like a family, like theyre over for you. He had congressmen over for dinner, in groups of 30s. Called hem at 6 00 a. M. , called a senator at 2 00 a. M. And said i was lying here looking at the ceiling hoping my president would call. The most important difference is congress was different then, bipartisanship was different there. Three out of four congressmen and senators who were veterans of world war ii and the korean war. They knew what it was like to have a common purpose that went across party lines. They werent racing home to raise money. Partisan lines werent drawn quite the same way. They cared about their institutions of the congress and senate. He could play on that and get civil rights, voting rights, medicare, medicaid. Extraordinary until the war cut into it. So important about the common purpose they had on this memorial day. How much of a peculiar situation were in is about the politial context trump is operating in . Hes a symptom of our polarized hyper partisan times. That dynamic is whats creating a president who is very popular within the base of his party, has enormous power within his party as a result but is not broadly popular with the american people. Therefore, things like impeachment proceedings as the founders might have mentioned wouldnt work in this circumstance. How much of trump is really a creature of this political context we live in . Theres no question that when you look at the last decades, the partisanship has increased exponentially. Theres some talk in the newspaper not long ago that people were more worried that chair thailand would marry outside the party than outside their religion. Thats crazy. Its developed and partly is because of the divisions in the country, the country versus the city, the coast versus the middle part, people feeling cut off from one another, feeling like the other side is the other. Then when you come into the presidency as President Trump did, youre coming in under that situation. What you would hope is that your responsibilities to expand that base would somehow be able to get more people together, even though youve come in under that hardship. At the first part, when he gave that joint session of Congress Speech in february calling for infrastructure, a new tone from his inaugural tone, we thought maybe hell do it. Right away, days later he was talking about the wiretapping of his trump tower by president obama. This whole thing about whats happened with the investigation, its been part of it the whole way along and its prevented him and hi himself has prevented himself from reaching out. Almost every president has tried to reach out. Thats the only thing you have to do, youre president of all the people even though hes in a difficult situation. The president s job is to be a uniter, not a divider. Its a lost opportunity. Doris kearns goodwin, a delight to talk to you. Me, too, john. Always a delight to have doris here. Now turning to this story that has so many people upset in hawaii. A deadly shark attack off the coast of maui. This 65yearold man was killed. Hes identified as dr. Thomas smiley an optometrist from granite bay. Authorities have posted signs along a half mile stretch of the beach warning of sharks. This sat least the third shark attack in hawaii this year, the first fatal attack in four years. Now, a hiker rescued after spending 17 days lost in a forest in hawaii is out of the hospital this morning. 35yearold amanda eller suffered a broken leg, knee injury and sunburned so bad became infected. Her shoes swept away in a flash flood. She said she survived eating berries and drinking river water. She says shes grateful to everyone who helped find her. Seeing the way the community of maui came together, people that know me, people that dont me, all came together, just under the idea of helping one person make it out of the woods alive, it just warms my heart. Search crews finally located amanda friday and airlifted her to safety. My gosh, 17 days, that is just remarkable. Shes right. The whole Community Came together to find one person. They do this all the time. So many heroes we remember. She said she chose life. For many, memorial day weekend means barbecues and beach trips. Our next guest, Bonnie Carroll founded a Nonprofit Organization 25 years ago that helps military families after a loss. Its called the Tragedy Assistance Program for survivors or taps. Shes joined by kiley, a member of taps, kylees husband douglas died in october of 2016 while serving in afghanistan. Thank you so much for being here with us. We appreciate you taking time on such an important day to be here. Bonnie, i want to start with you. You say that you created t. A. P. S. 25 years ago to provide Critical Services to other families like yours. Whats missing . What are these families craving . T. A. P. S. Is a family of all of us grieving the loss of our military loved once. We provide support around the clock, 24 7 help line, grief camps for kids, casework assistance. The most important thing is connections to others who are going through the same loss that we are. Its an opportunity to find hope and healing, make new friends that last a lifetime. Bonnie, was that not available to you when your husband died . It was president. Back in the early 90s, there was no National Organization to connect all of us grieving the loss of our military hero. But today we have almost 100,000 surviving families coming together this memorial day weekend to find hope with each other. Kiley, tell us about what this day means for you and tell us about your husband, army saurgt douglas riney. My husband, 26 years old at the time of his death, was killed in afghanistan october of 2016. This day to me means that we have a chance to remember him for more than just his death. We get a chance to remember him for the dash in between the day he was born and the day he died. Hes more than just a soldier that was killed. Have you felt alone . Before t. A. P. S. Found you, is this process for the survivors just a really can be a really lonely one . For me at the beginning it felt alone, now weve gained such an amazing big family that, if you feel alone, you just pick up a phone and call and theres somebody there 24 7. Theres always going to be somebody somewhere that can be there for you. Bonnie, that must make you feel good. It does. Thats exactly youve given help to 85,000 families. Thats what you were hoping for. This memorial day, its our chance to remember our heroes, remember the lives they lived, not just the fact that they died. So today well be at arlington together and also at the memorial day parade. Its a fantastic opportunity to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our nation. Kylie, your husband died performing a Guardian Angel task. Whats that mean . He was tasked pretty much as a security guard, a person who does not have a weapon of their own to be able to protect them, their own security detail, to be there to protect them when theyre out there doing their job. Your husbands obviously gave so much for our country. What can Everyday Americans do for families like yours . Just knowing that we are grieving. We will always have moments that we feel down and were sad, and just to be there to support us like the t. A. P. S. Family does. Unfortunately im one that i dont live near a lot of t. A. P. S. Family members. So being able to have our own community of people at home, too, that are there for us just like the community of t. A. P. S. Family we have means a lot. Because not only do i have people there for me, but there are people there for my children, to help me raise my kids the way that they need to be raised. That is so valuable. Bonnie, you were honored with the president ial medal of freedom in november of 2015. I believe we have a picture of you receiving it that day. Tell us what this day means for all the t. A. P. S. Families and what the rest of us can do for them. The families of our fallen are the living legacy of American Service and sacrifice. On this memorial day we remember the lives lived and the Service Given in defense of freedom and we honor those families who have also made that sacrifice. Its so important to remember the families today. You two are great exemplars of that. Bonnie carroll, kylie riney, thank you for your sacrifice as well. Thank you. Thank you. John. Scott, whats the story . Reporter as you mentioned, it was a series of comments online and inside his courtroom that god judge michael kwan into hot water. In his defense, he argued the First Amendment ought to apply to him as well, especially since he is a low level judge not deciding on national issues. The Utah Supreme Court ruled that judges sometimes have to keep their opinions to themselves so everyone, including the guy who might walk into court wearing a make America Great again hat feels like theyre getting a fair shake. Its not hard to find Harsh Criticism aimed at the president. Where you dont expect to find it is inside a courtroom. A municipal judge in Salt Lake City has been sanctioned for just that, taking public pot shots at President Trump. Just days after the 2016 election judge michael kwan wrote on facebook, i think ill go to the shelter to adopt a cat before the president grabs them all. He wrote about his disdain for President Trump. Next month he wrote, welcome to the beginning of the fascist takeover. The jabs even made it into his courtroom. Kwan once suggested a defendant not rely on his tax refund to pay fines because the president was building a wall, so if you think youre going to get taxes back this year, maybe, maybe not. Dont worry, theres a tax cut for the wealthy. Rex core tis is kwans lawyer. We argued unsuccessfully that judges are humans, too, they have opinions, so long as the opinion doesnt detract from their ability to judge, to handle their cases appropriately and doesnt detract from their credibility, they should be allowed to do that. The Utah Supreme Court disagreed, writing his behavior denigrates his reputation and his postings continue a pattern of inappropriate political commentary. In 2005, kwan made lewd comments in court about president clintons of fair. In 2015 he was president of an asianamerican political advocacy group. He resigned after a Judicial Commission found his position unethical. The Supreme Court felt he hadnt learned his lesson, ordering a sixmonth suspension without pay, a punishment his lawyer calls excessive. I think he feels like hes been muzzled. Kwan doesnt rule on national or political cases, only small claims and misdemeanors. The court ruled that doesnt matter. Maybe youre a trump supporter and appear in front of him. Youll feel you arent treated fairly. Our system works because people have to have confidence in the system. Whats interesting is when this ruling came down last week, kwan was inside his courtroom presiding over a group of people. He did finish up his schedule for the day because there wasnt specific guidance on when the suspension was supposed to start. At this point kwan has no plans to appeal the ruling. He also has no plans to leave his facebook account, alisyn. Very interesting story. Well see what happens at the end of this sixmonth suspension. Thank you very much, scott. Nine climbers including four in just the last week have died trying to scale mt. Everest. The tragedies are raising concerns that overcrowding near the summit is making the climb more dangerous. Arwa damon in live in kathmandu, nepal with more. Whats happening . The images are quite striking, especially when one takes into consideration that thats nor mousily long line of climbers is in whats called the death zone. Its called that for a reason. Your body is degrading because of a lack of oxygen. Every breath you take in this area only has about a third of oxygen you would have in a breath you take at sea level. It seems some climbers were well aware of the potential risks of being caught in this backlog for two to three hours. One is british climber Robin Hayes Fisher who died. Prior to that he posted in his instagram w a single route to the summit, delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal. I am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. Unless of course everyone else plays the same waiting game. This climbing season only lasts for a few weeks. On average there are five to six people who lose their lives while theyre trying to make it to the summit. But there have been a lot of criticisms about the number of climbers, their level of experience and the number of permits that the nepalese government issued. Cant the government issue fewer permits to avoid the overcrowding . Thats one of the options that is quite potentially out there. What a Government Official told us was that they do not necessarily feel that the number of permits they issued were what contributed to this backlog. They are saying they are trying to implement certain regulations where the climber needs to have a certain level of experience. They say 600 people did make it to the summit. Unless something fundamentally changes, experts are saying every year we could see an even greater death toll. Arwa damon, thank you very much, for being live in kathmandu for us. Once we break up the big east, it all goes to pot. Yeah. Well have to figure it out. What possessed you to do this . Same thing every year. Its what we all feel right now. Whats going on . I just hate the way i dont like living in a place that annoys me. Im annoyed to begin with. When everybody is fighting all the time, what is this . Is this where were going to go . This is going to be every day. Lau did we get so divided . I know you dont think President Trump is the cause, hes the symptom. Hes the symptom. Hes the symptom of the fact that were all feeling sort of vitriolic. Its not cured when hes gone. People want it to be this one person. When hes gone, were still going to be like this. He doesnt enhance things. He doesnt help . No. How did we get this . We were like this from day one, 13 colonies. The original constitution convention, thats when they should have broke up. Obviously there were times of union. Were all like, ah. It was a great idea. Sometimes we sort of got together. I feel like social media made everybody realize, see each other the way they really were. The old days, nobody had to see other people. I heard they do that down there, but thats probably not true. Now you have to look at reality. You think it was a bad idea to begin with, this whole America Thing . I think we should have stayed as the confederation yeah. I think the Constitutional Convention was a mistake. I have a whole show on the constitution. Constitution, friend or foe. We have another clip. Lets play another clip from the special. America, two parties still, all these years later, two parties. Theres 350 Million People and two parties. Theres 15 genders on these two parties. Theres four bathrooms and two parties. You make a good point. Its so the same amount of parties as when we started with 1 Million People. Now theres 350 Million People. If you dont march in lockstep with one of those two parties, youre a centrist which is a bad word. Centrist is the new extremist. Thats a good point. I hear it all the time that the twoparty system isnt working because people are cobbling together their own platform. I like a little bit from here, a little bit from here. But no party reflects that. No, exactly. Social media, i feel like the extreme influences where everybody running for president or being president is like you have to go along with the most extreme, most vitriolic, most aggressive part of your party. Social media makes them the ones that stand out. You call yourself a centrist. Yes. Whats your platform . When you run for president. Whats my platform . On what issue . Theres a million issues. After you want to divide america up again and get rid of the constitution, whats your plan . Theres a lot of different parts to the plan. Youre talking about a complex i feel like youre being noncommittal. Give me an issue, ill tell you the platform for that part of it. Immigration. Immigration, you take anybody thats here, anybody from a country thats here illegally, they have to trade with somebody here that we dont like that is a citizen, has to go to that country. How about Political Correctness . Thats the comedy killer, number one. Everyone is like, oh, no, thats fine. Its great. Really great. People are afraid. Its a nice sunny day. Im not helio centric. The rain is very important. Be sure to watch colin quinn on red state blue state tonight, 9 00 p. M. Eastern.
