That the policy process is a train wreck at this juncture. We have a playbook for these kinds of situations, alisyn, we did this when i was at the white house and this is not the first time that there have been threats from iran during the Trump Administration. President trump is trying to blame this all on john bolton, he doesnt like taking ownership of issues when things dont go well, but he was the one who made the decision to withdraw from the iran nuclear deal. He was the one that tweeted memes from game of thrones when we reimposed sanctions on iran most recently. You think those two things led to where we are with tanks today . I think that they certainly helped escalate tensions with iran and where we are today and he is now trying to take a different approach and to say that hes open to talking with iran because things have gotten to this skrung tour, but the policy process is not working. There is, again, a playbook for these kinds of situations. You get the intelligence in order, which they havent done, you brief congress so that everyone is operating from the same sheet of music, you brief your allies so that there is at least the same talking points about whats happening. What were seeing now instead is the process rushed to make a decision to draw down our personnel, to move assets and they are now trying to play catch up again with the president s initial policies on iran and with these decisions when they havent done the basic Good Housekeeping to implement a cohesive narrative on this. Abby phillip at the white house, there is this reporting from the Washington Post this morning that President Trump is somehow frustrated with john bolton, that john bolton is pushing for war and the president doesnt want to be there just yet. What are you hearing . Well, weve heard this before when it came to venezuela, the president expressed similar sentiments. We reported just a few weeks ago that he was growing frustrated that john bolton had pushed the United States in what he viewed as on the brink with a confrontation with venezuela. Similarly here john bolton has been out front on this issue of iran and the president is uncomfortable with that. I mean, you know, sam is right on some level that President Trump defers blame a lot of times in these situations. He is the chief decisionmaker in the white house. He is the commander in he have choo. Ultimately its up to him. But he is surrounded in bolton by an adviser who is basically staked his entire career on the principle of regime change in iran and now we are at this point now where the president feels like the u. S. Is pushing toward a confrontation that he is personally not ready for, that he campaigned against confrontations just like this, and thats why were seeing the president talking a lot more about trying to get the iranians on the phone. He wants to get on the phone, perhaps even get facetoface with negotiators because he would prefer to deal with it that way, but the problem is the rhetoric has escalated to such a point that they are having, i think, it seems, a hard time ratcheting things back down to an acceptable level. And the president is ultimately the person responsible for that, not john bolton. And the real concern here is the possible miscalculation. Right . Any military action in iran would make syria look like a cake walk, would like iraq look like a cake walk. Iran is four times the size of iraq. You would need more than double the 120,000 troops that are potentially being thought to send over there. So this is really a situation where not only do you need all of your allies on board, which doesnt seem to be the case as far as the europeans, but also this is something that is really concerning to u. S. Officials and to u. S. Politicians because any miscalculation could trigger a massive response. Theres some new reporting from our White House Team that just crossed a minute ago. Let me read some of the bullet points here. President trump has become irritated it he impression emerging over the past few days that hawkish advisers like bolton are pushing him toward military conflict. Inside the president has indicated he is intent on speaking with the iranians. He actually wants to open up a diplomatic channel. Let me read a few others and if you want to get on that you can. There is serious wariness of bolton inside trumps click of outside advisers. We need to be careful of his judgment and in terms of military conflict with iran, someone else says there is no interest from the president in doing that at all. Why are you amused by his desire to have these back channels are iran . Well, i have to just start with the john bolton comments. President trump feels entirely comfortable mean tweeting at perfect strangers when he disagrees with what theyre saying. It is discordant to me that he wouldnt sit down with john bolton and tell him that he disagrees with his policy approach in iran. They work in the west wing together when the president isnt watching television. Second, the president assumes that everybody wants to talk to him on the phone. If he actually sat down with his Intelligence Community they would likely tell him that the iranians have domestic politics, too. They have egg on their face because they signed an agreement with the United States that President Trump violated. It is entirely unlikely to me that they are just sitting around waiting for the president to call. If he was smart right now he would engage in a back channel negotiation with the iranians like we did under president obama so that he could build up credibility through that secret channel and convince the iranians that he is actually taking negotiations seriously. That is what hes saying he wants. He wants to develop some back channel diplomatic route to them, but is that possible . It might be possible behind the scenes if we establish credibility with the iranians. I dont know that thats what hes saying. He is the swiss coming to washington today in some kind of pr stunt, the swiss are our channel to the iranians. Thats not back channel, thats overt. He is making these statements publicly. We have no indication that hes trying to do something behind the scenes that actually involves preparatory work. Abby, you wanted in . I was just going to say that the u. S. Government has made it clear that they do want to establish some kind of channel with the iranians and the swiss visit today is part of the president making that as explicitly clear as he can. Sam might be right, this could very well be a publicity stunt, a way for President Trump to signal an openness to talking, but at the same time this is how President Trump operates. He actually would prefer that he be the one being on the phone with his counterparts, having those conversations and frankly i wouldnt be surprised if the iranians felt like they couldnt trust back channel negotiations because a lot of times people behind the scenes in this administration cannot speak for the president and i think they are aware of that just given the fact that past that past experiences with this have proven that thats how they operate, but, you know, our reporting right now is showing that the president s frustration with bolton, you know, sam is right, he could just talk to john bolton, but in almost every case where he has been frustrated with his advisers, you know, thinking back to rex tillerson, it is expressed through his conversations with his friends, its expressed on twitter. Yesterday he issued a tweet saying there is no disagreement, the policy process is doing well but i do want to talk to iran. He sometimes says contradictory things in public even when hes frustrated in private and that leads to these advisers being on the outs. I think we should watch for this to play out, even as the president tries to deny that there is discord behind the scenes. Our reporting shows that there really s i think the fact that his rhetoric and boltons rhetoric are not in the same place is just a clear example of how they are just two completely Different Directions on this issue. But there is a big risk in the president personally getting involved in any negotiation with iran. Hes just not equipped in the back story and getting himself directly involved with iranian officials. He could find himself in a similar position as he has been with kim jongun coming to two summits, walking away empty handed. Many people would say he would be better served if he did have his advisers step in for any sort of negotiation ala what we saw with president obama over the many years where his top negotiators were dealing with the iranians not president obama himself. To bolton we have to be reminded he was not the president s first pick. He bypassed bolton his first year in office as well, he had to be convinced by boltons allies. Michael flynn was his first pick. And look where he is now. They dont see eye to eye on many issues. Bolton is an ideologue, the president is not. Look at where bolton stands with regard to russia, similar concerns with regards to venezuela so they dont have that much in common. We heard from the Iranian Foreign minister saying there is no chance of discussions right now. The Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations told me two days ago talks arent happening. There was a system in place to talk and that was the nuclear agreement, the u. S. Pulled out of that, so no. A Little Campaign news, we learned this morning that joe biden the former Vice President is opening up his Campaign Office in philadelphia which seems like an obvious move, he is from delaware, although he was born in pennsylvania, but pennsylvania seems to be so important to him. And he can speak to so many of these voters in a way that frankly a lot of the other Democratic Candidates dont feel that they have that connection when it comes to the swing voter, when it comes to voters who voted for President Trump in 2016 that may have reservations about voting for him again, this is one of the great strengths of joe biden, he has quite a few weaknesses as well coming into this race but when it comes to speaking to every day americans saying i feel your pain, im one of you, this is what joe biden said he could have done in 2016, this is what a lot of people say he can do in 2020. Abby, new york city mayor bill de blasio has just jumped into the race this morning. Any comment from the white house . So far nothing. It has been interesting over the last few days, bill de blasio and the president s son donald trump jr. Going after it on twitter. This is going to be one of those interesting new york subfights in which these individuals from new york, the president and his sons and bill de blasio kind of have a mini feud happening on the side. Whether or not that will be enough to propel bill de blasio into real relevance in this race is another story, but there is some serious bad blood there. The trumps blaming de blasio for in their view mismanaging the citys finances. De blasio saying that the trumps are basically do business in a shady way in new york. I think that sometimes for these candidates getting attacked by the president and his sons can be a really good thing for them. We will see what happens with bill de blasio, but theres definitely some bad blood there. Abby, bianna, sam, thank you all very much for all of the expertise. So alabamas restrictive abortion ban is now law. For our next guest, this effort has been personal. We talk with her about why she begged alabamas lawmakers not to sign that bill. vo speed. The legislation would punish doctors who perform abortions with life in prison. But it does not provide an exception for victims of rape or incest. Our next guest sam blakely had an abortion after she was raped two years ago. Last week she testified before alabamas legislature begging them not to sign this bill. If abortion was not legal, i would still have one somewhere, somehow, or i just would not be here because theres no way that i would be able to carry my rapists child. There is no way. And i want you all to know that as you are deciding on this. Please, please, i am becking you, please dont take away my choice. Sam blakely joins us now. Sam, we so appreciate you being here because you are the person that this would affect. You represent the women that this would affect. Can you and i know this isnt easy talking about so publicly, but you wanted to come forward because you felt that strongly about it. Can you just tell us what that day was like when you learned that you were pregnant as the result of a rape. Absolutely. Devastation. There are no words to really describe what i went through. I can recall being in the bathroom and biting on my shower curtain to keep from screaming so loudly because i was so distraught. It was the worst moment of my life. And what would have happened in your life if this law had been in effect then and you had to carry the rapists baby to term . Well, i can honestly say that i would not be here. That was very traumatic. I suffered from ptsd afterwards. I suffered major depressive disorder. Lots of traumatic things happened and i honestly do not believe that i would be able to go through with it. My rapist i know would try to use that child that child to control me and to get to me because thats what he tried to do after i had my abortion. Yes. And he would have rights to that child if you were forced to have that child. So last night when the governor signed this bill into law and before that when it passed in the state legislature, just share with us your feelings. What was your reaction . I was shocked. It was it was it was different than having all of those men agree and put this into effect, but to have Governor Ivey as a woman who knows what we go through, who has probably heard countless stories of women begging her not to sign this bill and she still did it anyway. It was it was beyond heartbreaking to me. Here is what the republicans on the state Legislature Say they were hoping for in passing this bill. Let me play for you their motivation. A human life has rights. We will never get a heartbeat bill to be constitutional until roe versus wade is decided and reversed. So that is an admission that this is designed to go to the Supreme Court, that they are hoping that the Supreme Court takes this up, in fact, he made it possibly so extreme so the Supreme Court is forced to take this up because what they want, i guess, is a heartbeat bill or something to that effect. So what do you think of their motivations here . I think it is sick and i think its cruel that they are willing to endanger the lives of literally millions of women for some sort of political pat on the back or something, some sort of political advancement in their agendas or something. Im not sure if they understand the gravity of whats going to happen, but at this point i have no words. I have absolutely no words to describe the disgust that i feel and so many women have told me that they feel. They are scared. They are angry. We dont know whats going to happen. We are we are seriously in fear for our lives as women in alabama. When you say they dont know the gravity of whats going to happen, what do you think is going to happen . Well, i know that abortion will not end. Safe legal abortion will end, but abortion will not end. As women we will find ways. They will be unsafe ways, they will be detrimental to our health ways, but we will continue to have abortions and that that is something that i dont know if the republicans know or care about, but that is the fact of the matter. That we will continue to have them. They are taking away our safety. Sam blakely, we really appreciate you sharing your real life personal and devastating experience with us. Thank you very much for being here on new day. Absolutely. John . Its courageous to have that discussion out in the open like that. Montana governor Steve Bullock officially entered the 2020 race this week, joining more than 20 other democrats vying for the nomination. Its all the ones after that. New york city mayor bill de blasio announced just this morning that he is running for president , becoming the 23rd democrat vying to challenge President Trump. On tuesday our next guest, governor Steve Bullock from montana, also entered the race, touting his bipartisan appeal. As a democrat governor of a state that trump won by 20 points i dont have the luxury of just talking to people who agree with me. I go all across our states 147,000 square miles and look for Common Ground to get things done. Thats how i was able to bring democrats and republicans together. And governor bullock joins us here on the set. Governor, thanks so much for being with us. Freight to be with you. Thanks for having me. Welcome to the fray, as they say. Listen, some campaign news, we learned overnight that since you announced on tuesday your campaign has raised over a Million Dollars. We also learned this morning that you earned the endorsement of Iowa Attorney general tom miller who has been in office forever roughly, endorsed barack obama when he first ran in 2008 which leads me to wonder do you think for you the road to the nomination goes through iowa . How important is iowa to your candidacy . I think with a field of 37 or 23 or whatever it is, whatever it might be, iowa has always played that sort of the sorting hat function. So for i think all of these candidates the field will really be winnowed down after iowa, but thats not the only place. Really what we need to be doing and i will be campaigning everywhere, but iowa certainly i was so pleased when tom miller, i think he was the first person outside of illinois to endorse barack obama and hes the first statewide official to endorse in the entire field, which im pleased that he has the tru in he he me. Did you just make a harry potter reference with the sorting hats. Thats what happens when you have 17, 15 and 12 year olds. I live in that sort of world. We get it. Lets talk about this magic trick that you pulled off in montana where you won as a blue governor in this red state the year that donald trump won by 20 points. So thats commendable, obviously you are touting that as somebody who can cross the aisle. Some democrats in this race would say its maybe because you made too many concessions or you were too moderate. Look, 25 to 30 of my voters voted for donald trump, but its not because i changed the values that i had. I mean, my legislature is almost 60 republican. We were able to get Medicaid Expansion through, we froze college tuition, passed some of the most progressive laws on dark money yet never once compromising on womens right to make her own healthcare decisions or workers rights or access to the courthouse. Its not i think the way that ive done it is that i dont just go to the patches of blue, as i said in that video, this is a big state, i have to go everywhere and often i have to both talk to and listen to people that may not initially agree with me. They may not agree with me on every single policy, but they fundamentally believe that im going to try to fix a broken political system and make an economy or give them opportunity that can work. What does that mean on an issue like gun violence, fighting gun violence, which is such an important issue to many democratic progressive voters, its number three on our list. Being aggressive on climate change, medicare for all, executive actions on guns. This is and a issue i dont want to say involved but you have been in a different place than some of the democratic canned dots on this. I am also a hunter, i get outdoors. Fundamentally if we could ever look at this as a Public Health issue, as governor ive vetoed a lot of gun related bills. A Public Health issue would say how can we actually make sure that everybody can stay safe . And gun owners and nongun owners want people to be able to stay safe. Universal background checks. Youve changed on that, correct . I have changed on that. And why . You know, it happens when you know, four of the times ive been asked to lower the flags is due to mass shootings. When i dropped off my sixth grader, my youngest, his first week in a new school they learned where you need to go if an active shooting occurs. No sixth grader should have to look at that. Looking at if you can take the politics out of it what would make a difference. I think universal background checks would make a difference, i think red flag laws as an example where you could remove a gun in a household where Domestic Violence and other things would make a difference. And i think that were finally at this point where we have to have a much greater conversation about how to keep families and people safe. Now, that doesnt mean because the nra and outside dollars would like to say these democrats want to take everybodys guns away. Its not about that, its about making sure that a sixth grader doesnt have to feel that way his first week of school. Its about concrete steps that we could take if we could take the politics out of it to help people feel that they are going to be safe and in a safe community. Foreign policy is obviously a big issue for any president ial candidate. I was inclined to ask you a question about iran or something, but then i had heard you ask the question who do you think the biggest global foe is to the United States and your answer was the United States. Well, think about when, i mean, President Trump is with putin. I mean, we were not by militarily but we were attacked during the 2016 election. When the president will turn around and say, do you know what, he says that they didnt intervene or interfere with our elections so i believe him. And then we didnt even as a country, republicans and democrats, say, now, wait a minute. I mean, the division, divisiveness where were not even going to be able to be together, i think can be a threat because internally we can have a lot of disagreements and we can have some disagreements externally, but if we are so divided as a nation with things like russian intervention in election that we all cant come out together and say, this is unacceptable for our representative democracy. And its not just the election, we need to we are typically united to the rest of the world as a country when it comes to foreign policy. Those divisions are becoming deeper and deeper in this country and its not just on tv shows, its not just on twitter feeds, its in d. C. Where we cannot come together. Governor, how do you explain whats going on in alabama where theyve just signed into law the most restrictive abortion law that does not make an exception for incest or rape, obviously, again, being from a red state you understand that the public even the public polling doesnt support something that draconian. So whats going on with these states . Well, i think that i mean, i cant speak for alabama. I think its pretty problematic when 1973 is when we actually said, you have the right to make decisions over your body, not me. Fundamentally if we want to roll back the clock 45 years, this is bad not just for alabama, but it speaks to our whole country. And thats part of the areas where i think weve got to turn around and say that its time to be promoting Womens Health not attacking it. You have one more question, i think its about the steve miller rant. Its true. We like to ask the president ial candidates about their musical preferences. We call it candidate mixed tape. Thats our rock and roll sting. Who is your favorite band . My favorite band of all time was probably actually jimmy buffe buffett. Steve miller was the first album i ever bought, book of dreams which this jungle love and things like that. Driving me crazy. Born to be blue was a later album where its more of a blues album. Now youre getting controversial and i think you need to be careful, governor. Thanks for playing along. Reporter farmers have been dealing with the fallout from this trade war since last spring. I couldnt handle it anymore, so one night about 9 00 i called her, she was having out on her back deck and i said, did you ever think about coming back home to iowa and helping out . Next night she said, yeah, were coming. Reporter she quit corporate life and entered, well, i guess you could say a much different field. Now father and daughter work together, managing 1,100 acres of corn and soybeans during one of farmings worst down turns in almost 40 years. Larry says President Trumps trade war with china will cost them 150,000 this year alone. And vows never to vote for trump again. Trumps economics also put pressure on amy to get things right. I need to be very cautious of every penny i put in the ground or put into equipment. Her days start at 5 00 a. M. How late will you go . As long as we need. Reporter when not growing crops shes also raising two children and married to a nonfarming husband. This may not seem to be the best time to take over the Family Business in a maledominated industry in the middle of a crises, but amy says its the perfect time for a woman to step in. Being, i think, outside of farming has been able for me to bring some other resources to the table. And a kind of different mindset. A different mindset, exactly. Reporter she believes shes right where she belongs and dad agrees. Once she came back, she just she just dug into it and never looked back. Reporter amy will be the fifth generation of her family to farm this land. She doesnt miss the corporate world one bit. I like my view from my office right now. Its a beautiful view. Reporter a lot of farmers are trying to come up with anything to make it through these difficult times. Some have talked about different crops, maybe hemp, some have joked about growing marijuana, others are thinking about opening up b bs, this agri tourism, even others have taken on second jobs, anything they can do to hang on the farms in these very tough times. I am the champion all this week were bringing you stories of some incredible people who are true champions for change. This morning you will meet a man who made a Lasting Impact on our dr. Sanjay gupta. In 2000 kevin hines tried to end his life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Not only did kevin survive, he is now thriving and has dedicated his life to suicide preventio prevention. Thought you might like this. Oh, my brother. This is amazing. That thing that youve been fighting for for nearly 20 years, there it is. I know i know this is emotional, but this this is this is in large part because of you, man. I think we tend to be very reductionist when we cover stories, its very binary, here is what happened, here is the outcome. I think what kevin hines and this story did for me was make me realize that the shades of gray in between stories arent things that you should just dismiss. No details too small, especially with the story like the one im go b. To tell you. On september 25th, 2000, 19yearold kevin hines walked to the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge and jumped. So, you know, im falling head first and i immediately recognize if i hit head first i will die. I hit the water and the impact reverberated through my legs and shattered my t12, l1 and l2. Its like hitting a solid brick wall. What did you what was going through your mind . The very millisecond my hands left the rail and my legs cleared t instant regret. Instantaneous regret. I just wish i could go back in time. Kevin and i first met back in 2003. His was one of the first stories i reported at cnn. Why did you come here . Why the Golden Gate Bridge . I was under the impression that it was the easiest way to die. Over the last two decades the suicide rate in the United States has gone up 33 . That makes it the number two cause of death in this country for people age 10 to 34 and over that same time period 537 people have died after jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Kevin hines has spent the last 16 years trying to change those tragic numbers. His singular goal, to get a net placed on this beautiful bridge, a barrier to stop someone from dying, someone like him. What are the aesthetics of a bridge compared to one human life . What if that was your mom or your dad . This is the place where you jumped. Yeah. This is the place where i lived. I love that. What surprised me then, still surprises me now, is this story that kevin tells about the day that he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. He made this pact with himself which was that if anybody basically is kind to me, if anybody looks at me and says, whats wrong . Can i help you . Wants to be compassionate in some way, if anybody had done that for him he wouldnt have jumped. That stuck with me and i think in some ways it has influenced and directed a lot of the other stories that i do. Its never about a single individual, its always about the circle of individuals, the ecosystem of society as a whole. In some ways you look like a totally different person. Yeah. I mean, first of all, just physically. Both of us in some ways i think look better now, you know. I think kevin first got me thinking about this idea that if someone drops all of a sudden in front of you from a cardiac arrest, most people would have some idea what to do, call 911, start pushing on the chest. But if someone is clearly in trouble from mental illness, somebody who may be clearly suicidal, not only do we often not know what to do, we often turn the other way. Today is our gift. Kevin hines wont admit this, but he has probably saved many, many lives. People who thought nobody cared and then kevin hines shows up and says, i love you, i care about you, i understand the pain that youre feeling and theres something that we can do about it. Lets go check this out together. Yeah, man. Lets do it. And today i get to show him that his story, his fight, has meant something. That net is finally going up. Thats the net. Thats it. Its going up on the golden gate as of 2021. Not one more death by someones hands off the Golden Gate Bridge. This is one of the most special days of my life. What a story. Sanjay, thank you so much. Tell us more about the net because thats interesting. Yeah, and the debate for a long time was youve got this beautiful bridge, will this like ruin the aesthetics of it versus people who say, look, this has become one of the number one suicide spots in the country. Thats the debate for the last couple decades now. One of the facts i think really changed the debate was this idea that people would say, hey, look, if they dont jump off the Golden Gate Bridge they will go do something else. Thats actually not true what studies have shown. If someone is thwarted from their attempt, the likelihood of them actually attempting again is actually very low. So not only does this make a difference at the time, it makes a difference in their lives long term. So often we dont get to talk to somebody who fails and to hear him say that one second later he had regret, that is to powerful. Its i mean, and if someone had just given him friendly eyes, as kevin calls it, friendly eyes at that moment, he wouldnt have done it. I mean, we could all save a life, right, if you see someone who is hurting. Physically you know what to do, push on the chest, hurting mentally, dont dont turn away. We can all try to do that today. Yeah. Sanjay, that was beautiful. Thanks so much. Thank you. We have more Inspiring Stories tomorrow. Dont miss a one hour prime time special hosted by sanjay, 8 00 p. M. Eastern right here on cnn.
