Lets start with Polo Sandoval joining us right now. Were seeing some protests now turning into festivals or rallies where theres music and dancing. Is there a tonal change in some of the demonstrations . Reporter there certainly it, victor compared to monday and tuesday. Certainly a drastic change here. If you watch the demonstrations, which as you mentioned a while ago were some of the largest weve seen nearly two weeks of demonstrations. They were passionate, they were powerful and by most accounts, were peaceful. The peaceful fight for change is continuing across america this weekend. 12th day of people filling streets with renewed calls for reform after George Floyds killing nearly two weeks ago. Thousands in North Carolina paid their respects to george floyd on saturday. He was born in North Carolina but died in minneapolis after a Police Officer had a knee to his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. There is no way in the world that his life will not change the trajectory of racism from now on. We can quite literally lead the way in our nation, enacting more Police Reform than any other city in the country and we cannot fail. At least tens of thousands, its estimated, participated in protests across washington, d. C. On saturday. Metropolitan d. C. Spokesperson told cnn there were no arrests. Cnn learned that the white house apparently wanted 10,000 active duty troops to crackdown on the protesters. What do we know about what they had planned . Reporter good morning, victor and christi. Earlier this week the white house wanted 10,000 active duty troops to patrol the streets of d. C. When we were seeing active destruction in parts of the protests that were spiraling out of control. President trump was advocating a crackdown not just in the Nations Capital but in parts of the country. He was not liking what he was seeing. Defense secretary mark esper and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff pushed back on the president s demands. Esper eventually did send 1600 active duty troops on to the streets of d. C. Acquiescing in part to the white houses demands. But there were already National Guardsmen out there. None were needed and they started to go home thursday night. Slowly phasing out the National Guardsmen. The white house yesterday issuing a strong statement of support for esper after he ended up on shaky ground. On wednesday, he broke publicly with the president saying he did not support the use of active duty troops. That touched off speculation, victor and christi that he might not have a secure place in the administration for long. Sara westwood, appreciate the update. Thank you. Theres protesters asking city leaders to Defund Police departments. They want cities to spend less money on punishment and policing and more money on community services. In minneapolis, the mayor responded to the calls for action saying that he did not support the defunding movement. His response was met with this. The mayor was booed off stage. His office tells cnn that he is committed to structural reform, but does not support abolishing or defunding the police. An assistant professor of history at Emery University in atlanta, also the author of presumed criminal, black youth and the Justice System in post war new york. Professor, good morning to you. Good morning, victor. Thank you for having me. Whats your understanding of this, before we get to the history, the defunding a Police Movement . My a sums is that the protesters dont want the Law Enforcement line of the budget zeroed out completely or maybe they do. But there are limitations. I think its been pretty exciting to see the calls to defund the police be taken seriously in some places, whether its the university of minnesota where the president severed ties with the minneapolis Miss Department or the Minneapolis School board vote to go terminate its contract with the police department. I think these are the types of alternatives that brightly honor the memory of somebody like george floyd. Your book focuses on black youth and the Justice System. By the time black teenagers, maybe in their 20s get to the Justice System, theres a myriad of structural and societ challenges and failures that led up potentially to that moment. Is that the scope of the problem for us before we get to Justice System for the injustice of the Justice System . Thats right. I think that what lies at the center of so many of these conversations come out of issues of black criminality that few are so willing to admit. Actual reality for how young black men are seen, be it the media, be it social scientists, be it sipsychologists or outsid factors that contribute to the broader legal system. Historians have been writing about this stuff for years. It comes as no surprise to many of us. We point to a lot of contemporary studies that illustrate how these policies have shaped these debates and these conversations really since 1865. In the call for changing the policies, weve been at moments like this before. Flash points and then calls for some dramatic change. You pointed out to one of my producers, the white racism was the cause for a lot of the unrest in the late 60s. Calling for an investment in African American communities. A lot of that didnt happen. Why . What is the indication that people think this is a different moment, that those impediments are any weaker or not president today . Yeah. No. I think the a fantastic point for people to revisit about just the shortcomings that some Police Reforms offered in the past. Weve seen lip service to improving Race Relations or Police Relations with the black community. The Current Commission is 52 years ago. Were having conversations and debates over whether it should be traditional Police Reform or abolition. Whether its divestment or defunding. The abolitionist voices have been there through its history. I think one thing that scares people off when we use language like abolition, they think its a zero sum game, about getting rid of police and the prisons. For some that might be the case. Its about abolishing the conditions. That make prisons that make excessive policing become the solution. You know, when we use that kind of language, right, it helps us to frame as were reminded that this might be the only way we can address oppressive Police Practices in our country. So many, as i mentioned, have said this is a different moment. You see would be al highs at these rallies. When you see white people in missoula, montana, chanting black lives matter, what does that look like after the rally . I mean, what does does it engage proactive while ally do when they go home and moving forward . I mean, i think thats been a fantastic kind of addition, if you will, to our current moment. Thats not to say that we havent had white allies in the past, because we have. But i was speaking recently with a civil rights historian and we talked about how exciting it is to see white people in the streets who montana, north dakota, south dakota. Typically, you wont think that because of what the democrats state, you would see as much uproar. That hes tried to humbly bring me back to earth as a young historian thats holding on to optimism. Lets be clear that history tells us that white allies will end up disappointing us. Its a matter of how much disappointment. I hope we dont repeat history this time. Karl sudler, thanks so much for being with us. The book is presumed criminal. Black youth and the Justice System in post war new york. I appreciate the conversation. I appreciate you having me, victor. Thank you. Got breaking news to get to. Moments ago weve learned the number of coronavirus deaths has surpassed 400,000. This conversation, important ones that parents have to have with children, right, and should be having regarding whats happening. Its hard to know what age is appropriate and how to present some of these conversations, and its difficult to explain why people are be protesting and why people are upset and why they want change without traumatizing a child to understand what other people have been through. But to instill in them a need to see everybody, the necessity to see everybody as equal and to fight for that. Child Health Advocate and creator of what is black podcast, dr. Jacqueline due shea is with us. Its good to have you here. I want to start with a few messages that parents have sent me regarding having these conversations. Kelly wrote saying, my home is filled with different races, almost daily. So my conversations have been with everyone. First of all, dont be so consumed with being right that youre unwilling to listen and see the other side. Secondly, dont be see quick to jump on band wagons because of what youre told. Be you and use your experiences as a foundation for your opinion. What about, doctor, people who dont have that diversity in their home or in their neighborhood, how do you have those conversations . Thank you, christi, for the opportunity to be with you all this morning and to talk about this important topic. I think for families who dont have diversity within their family, i think books are a wonderful way to insert that diversity into your home. There are wonderful booklets curated by the brown bookshelf, Common Sense Media and other organizations, such as embrace race and help your children. Org. Having books are a wonderful opportunity to do that. Also, if possible, i suggest movies, television shows, right . Documentaries that are children friendly. Again, Common Sense Media is a great resource to do that. You can explore different cultures and races and open up those conversations. Kimberly wrote and said, our kids are adults now. I raised them to love everyone as god loves them. Every day, my kids are marching in california protests. They send videos and photos. Im so proud of them for truly listening to them when i was their mommy. I believe it starts at the breakfast table when children are four years young. Thats what she did. Age appropriateness is something that people have some confusion about. How can you give us guidance in that regard . Certainly. I think its wonderful that that person shared their journey. I think she hit the nail on the head. Around preschool age is when kids start to internalize racial bias. I think thats the an important topic. For many of us parents, we think that our kids weve in reality, our kids know more than we think they know. Ive seen videos, ive seen during the protests where there are Young Children who already are a aware because their parents exposed them to this. Or from family members or school system. Theyre already aware. I think right now is just an opportunity for you to ask your kids these questions in an age appropriate way. For preschoolers, many of them ask questions about whats happening in the news, mom, or why are you upset . Age appropriate way to let them know and share, something bad happened to this man, his name is george floyd. People are upset because he was hurt by police, right . So just, age appropriate kind of straightforward and asking kids questions as theyre a little bit older, can understand better, then the conversation can deepen. Again, also books, getting kids Historical Context as to historical use of protests and how theyve made change in our country can help with those conversations. As kids get older in their tweens and teens, again, theyre open to understanding more things and you can have deeper conversations with them. Sure. At that point they have opinions as well, which can really spark a good conversation. I know that there was an article published in the american of pediatrics. I think you coauthored part of this. The impact of racism has been linked to Mental Health problems in children and adolescents. This is something outlined that i think a lot of people do not know. Its that the chronic stress associated with racism particularly for children who live in it is rampant and it really affects their health. Help us understand what these children are living with in that atmosphere. So, again, if there is unremitting stress and racism being one of those stresses, it causes physiological changes over time that can lead to chronic illnesses. In addition, because of the stresses that occur from perceived racism or actual incidents occurring for someone, internalizing those feelings, they can develop depression and anxiety or stress, if theres not a way to cope with that, it might require additional help through the pediatrician or a Mental Health provider. I think whats important to know, their direct Health Effects or indirect Health Effects. We look at our economic system, our wealth gap, right . Those also impact health, right . If kids are not having the proper access to educational attainment, right, that affects health. We know that if kids arent reading grade level in terms of reading by third grade, they have poor outcomes in terms of school, graduation from schools and if youre not graduating from schools or college, you have less access to Health Insurance which impacts health. Criminal justice and political policy related to racism, those all can contribute to poor health outcomes. Correct. Doctor, thank you so much. We learned so much from you this morning. We appreciate your voice in this. Thank you. Thank you. Youre welcome. Were hearing from a lot of athletes talking about the moments in our country across the world. The march in washington that weve seen was one of the largest in recent memory. Tens of thousands of protesters calling for an end to Police Brutality. The president did what he often does. Side stepped theish up and just talked about the size of the crowd. Lets talk about this with cnn chief media correspondent and host of reliable sources. Bri bri brian stelter. Hes not dealing with the issue. Hes absent from the center of the conversation. Thats right. All week long, weve seen this tendency for the president to say dont believe your eyes. Do not believe your own eyes and ears. Whether thats the white house denying that tear gas was used in Lafayette Park or now whether hes saying the protests were smaller than expected. We can see the video of the protests in washington. We can all tell this was an extraordinary and very, very big event. He did tweet overnight saying the protests were smaller than expected. He said the police did a great job, thank you. He ignored them he down played the significance of the protests. Thats because he focuses on what people are saying about him. He focuses on the fact that people protesting were holding up signs against him. He did not talk about the broader purpose of the movement. That is in line with his usual behavior. Its still shocking. He expresses disregard for both different parts of the first amendment. The part about the press and the part about free expression. Lets just note, these protests were in washington, they were in new york, they were in hundreds of other cities and towns across the country. This is not just a blue state or city saying this is an incredible uprising across the country that the president seems not to be look, hes noticing it but seems to be down plague. Its global, actually. Weve seen them in australia and london. He takes a shot at the press sometimes as well because this is what you cover, brian. We know that there have been journalists who have been hurt and attacked at some of the protests early on. How much of that is still happening . Whats your take away of that . Thats right. In the past ten days, about 300 different incidents have been counted. Mostly in cases where Police Officers fired into crowds and reporters have been hit by tear gas and rubber bullets. There have been cases of protesters or rioters beating up on journalists trying to get them to leave scenes. These were mostly early in the week. They were concerning enough that a number of press written letters to local governors and mayors to make sure it doesnt happen. Whats remarkable about this weekend is the acts of vandalism and setting fires and that was clearly a chapter, an ugly chapter of whats happened in the past 10, 11 days. That chapter seems to have closed. That was last weekend, in the last monday in new york city and now weve seen a complete break from that behavior and now were in a different chapter, about massive peaceful protests. Maybe its about powerful protests. Because theyre powerful protests across the country. No doubt about it. Stelter, always appreciate you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Be sure to watch his show.
