Good morning to you. Wherever youre watching around the world im victor blackwell. And christi paul. Ready or not america is opening back up. The coronavirus kill ed 53,94 americans. And right now the more restrictions are being lifted across the country. State leaders are hoping the weeks of social distancing will allow businesses to reopen and allow people to return to some sense of normalcy. We started to see a little bit of this this weekend. Barbershops and nail salons filled up in parts of georgia. Take a lock at the beaches in california. They were pretty packed with residents looking to beat the heat. In alaska, that state allowed some restaurants to open. Though they cant exceed 25 of their normal capacity. As restrictions are eased, dr. Fauci has a warning. He says states must have enough tests to to respond to inevitable outbreaks that will occur and that the u. S. Needs to double the amount of tests its doing. Lets begin with Jason Carroll in new york. Despite some of the expert warnings that these states are are not ready shs more states will start to ease restriction this is week. What are we expecting from other states . Reporter well, look, theres really no one way of looking a the this. Because when you look at the states across the count truss. So many states have different plans, different ways of reopening. New york is still stay at home. Then you look the at georgia where the governor there is taking heat from critics saying hes doing too much too soon. Parlors are opening, a number of businesses there where you can go out and with only restrictions go to some of those it businesses. You look the a the state of kentucky. Much different. You have some aspects of the medical industry are opening. You can go to the dentist in kentucky. Youll with be able to go to physical therapy. Or in southern california, you have some of the beaches open on limited capacity. So different states operating and reopening in different ways. But having said that, you still have governors in states such as new jersey and in new york saying, look, too much, too soon. In new york, where some of the numbers are trending in a positive direction, the comfort just one patient left. The number of hospitalizations in the state are done. The number of intubations are are down. Even with those numbers, the governor says still have to do a lot in terms of testing before anyone at least in this state can talk about reopening. Dr. Fauci says we need to double the testing that were seeing so far. Did he say anything more about the capability of that . Thats where the question is coming into play. Reporter right, dr. Fauci talked a about the need for continued isolation and contact tracing. But what he also pointed out is the need to increase the amount of testing in the United States by double. We dont want to get fixated. But right now were doing. 52 million per week. We should get up to twice that. I think we will. Testing is an important part of what were doing, but its not the only part. So dr. Fauci also went on to say that as the country start s to reopen all of these states reopening in different ways, he says its very likely what youre going to see are more outs as more people are coming into contact with each other. Thats also another reason why youre going to need more and more tests. Jason carroll, always appreciate your updates, thank you. After the president s comments on disinfectants on thursday, the Illinois Public Health director says her. Department has seen a significant increase in calls to poison control over the lst two days. She says some of the calls included someone using a detergentba detergentbased solution for a mixture to try to kill germs. Heres the warning shoost the getting now. Injecting, ingesting, snorting household cleaners is dangerous. It is not advised and can be deadly in the past two days, theres been a significant increase in calls to the Illinois Poison Center compared to this same time last Year Associated with exposures to cleaning agents. A cnn medical analyst with us now. Hes also a Public Health specialist and primary care physician in atlanta. Always good to see you. You want to get your reaction to that. And i think a lot of people hear whats happening and think surely nobody is going to try to drink or use bleach internally in some way to ingest it. Though so many messages not to do it, how effective are they . Good question. I realize that a lot of people are desperate. Were so worried about getting this infection and dying, but this is absolutely not a recommended treatment at all. A lot of times as doctors we say we dont have enough studies to prove that can be damaging. We dont need any studies to prove that ingesting, swallowing, snorting, putting stuff on the eyes, face, could be very dangerous and life threatening. So its absolutely shotgun this nobody should be doing at all. Let me ask you about antibody tests that are happening. We have been told that finding out who has these antibodies could lead to the structure that gets people back to work and sense of sit. But from the World Health Organization, we got this caveat is and this is from their relief. Theres currently no evidence that people who have recovered from covid19 and have ant bodies are protect ed from a second infection. If thats true and theres no evidence yet, how does that change how we look at getting back to work . Were all excited about this covid19 community passport. If this virus is going to behave likes s s s s i cousins, which two months of immunity, what the w. H. O. Is suggesting is we dont really know at this point. And as we know about 20 of people in new york tested positive for antibodies, so i think what the World Health Organization is basically saying is dont get carry ied away jus because you have antibodies, this is a new virus. We dont really know if were going to have immunity or for how long were going to have immunity. Put were going to find out soon as the Antibody Testing becomes more verifiable and more specific to covid19. I know youre getting used to the new reality. Were talking to our producer about how you have become a teledoctor, not person b it person any longer. How confident are you that you can accurately diagnosis someone if you cant see them in person . Theres a lot we can do with telemedicine. Its also new to me. Im a primary care physician that sees 20 patients a day here in my city. But recently, 90 of visits have been telemedicine. Patients are really taking well to it. Theres a the lot we can do. Patient cans can check their blood pressure, i can see a patient, they can see me. Im able to reassure them. I tighted a lady with a blood clot, which is a lifethreatening illness on telemedicine. Theres restrictions, but theres so much we can do, especially patients that are anxious. I can see them. They can see me and i can reassure them. Its pretty remarkable how much we can do as telemedicine doctors. The cdc tripled the number of symptoms of covid19. Initially it was fever, cough, shortness of breath. They added symptoms this week. I wond is this a single symptom thats enough to worry or a combination without a fever that should prompt concerns . 95 of patients will have a fever. Its probably close to 99 . Having said that, as you ment n mentioned, because were learning a about this virus in realtime, were adding more and more symptoms, loss of taste, loss of smell. And recently strokelike symptoms. So what i tell my patients is we dont have a specific symptom. If youre concerned about anything, you should contact your from and make sure they are a aware of it. This question is a good one. It encompasses two things. Theres no evidence of immunity if you have had covid19 and also a lot of the concerns about whats going to happen in the fall. Is there going to be a second wave. If you can get reinfected, would the second time be less severe . Can we even answer that right now . We can answer that it by look ing at history. This virus, like us said, belongs to the family of coronavirus. Sars, the common cold is part of it. If you look at the history of viruss, if you develop some sort of immunity or antibodies, that second infection technically should not be be as bad as the first. But i want to be cautious because we dont know too much about the covid19 virus specifically. But im also optimistic that once we develop antibodies, we are going to have some form of immunity and that second possible infection should not be as severe as the first one. Always good to have you. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. So for weeks now, we have been introducing the dpls new york who have been really at the front of this fight of the p pandemic. Ask it includes an anesthesiologist who recovers from covid19 and part of a hospital Rapid Response team. He gave cnn a look at the daytoday challenges of treats patients. Heres his story. I recovered from coronavirus about four or five weeks ago. And i have been working on the front lines treat iing patients and trying to support our staff as we fight the pan dem you can. Im donating plasma, which is rich this antibodies. Give this plasma to someone who is acutely infected with coronavirus shs the antibodies start attacking the virus while the person themselves start mounting their own immune response. So im assisting with intubation, someone who is getting sicker and sicker. So we can get everything set up before the procedure. Nz. So im running to another intubation. Its about 2 30 in the afternoon. Its really crazy how sick this virus makes people. And because theres no visitors here, we end uptaking the role of representative speaking to their families trying to connect loved ones with each other, holding the phone, trying to speak between mother and son and other family members. The last words to each other. When were doing with this crisis, i have a lot of hope and i think this is going to make us come out a lot stronger and were all going to work together. All the people will benefit from that. Let me take you to maryland now. Where people are rallying around a beloved Community Member who lost her husband to covid19. This is a motorcade thats driving past the home of taylor. Her husband died suddenly after contracting the virus this month. Her friends and colleagues and students, they wanted to find a way to show their support while also paying tribute to her husband. So they created this caravan. You see the signs there. The hearts. She stood there in the rain excepting those messaging from her friends and colleagues. That makes all the difference. Especially when a lot of people who lose someone, they cant have traditional funerals. Right. All those people cannot pack into a church or to a funeral home. This is the best they could have done. And she really absorbed it and appreciated it. It makes all the difference, etspecially when youre alone. Ask if youre trying to reconcile that on your own. Thats a hard thing to do. I have seen a lot of people actually on social say i want to go to church. You want to be back with my church family. There are some churches in georgia that can hold services today. Theres a pastor with a huge congregation saying, not so fast. Reverend bryant is joining us to talk about his choice and how he believes you can pray and stay safe. Still ahead, wheres kim jongun . A Senior Administration official says that discussions are happening at the white house for a plan to replace the health and Human Services secretary. Sarah westwood is following the latest for us from the white house. What do you know about any eminent cabinet shakeup . Its not clear how em net this move is or even if it will happen. Theres not an appetite for some kind of big staffing shakeup in the muld of the pandemic. But it is clear that health and Human Services secretary has been on thin ice in the Trump Administration for awhile now. Were hearing that theres been some finger pointing going on drkted at azar about the administrations earlier missteps related to handling the covid19. The president was frustrated over the lack of communication on key Health Decisions earlier in the response. In a sign of perhaps the peril of the position that azar is in, a longtime trump loyalist, former 2016 campaign adviser, was installed as the thus hhs spokesman a couple week asian. A sign of the distrust that some loyalists have of azar and also at the beginning of all of this, Vice President mike pence was appointed head of the Coronavirus Task force a a job that art is had been doing before. A spokesperson down played this in a statement saying secretary azar is busy responding to a Health Crisis and doesnt have time for intrigue. The white house dismissed this saying that it is a distraction. But this is all happening against the become drop of scrutiny of the agents ouster of the va vaccine expert who is filing a whistleblower compla t complaint. The president did a lot of tweeting yesterday because hes getting a lot of attention where he talks about the waste that he sees, the briefings can be. There was to briefing yesterday. What do we know . Is there some announcement coming . Its going to be shared by many aids ask allies who have been pushing the president to stop holding a as many broefings. They are viewing them as a diminishing return coming out of the briefings that the president allows them to go on too long and the episode we saw on thursday, the president referring to light and disinfect tant, Health Experts denounced. A as prime example of the missteps and untorsed errors that can occur, but i want to read you what the president tweeted. What is the purpose of having white house news conferences with the media, ask nothing but hostile questions and refuses to report the truth or facts accurately. They get record ratings and the American People get nothing but fake news. Not worth the time and effort this comes as cnn has seen the president has been absent from the Task Force Meetings and the white house is considering cutting become on these briefings. Well see what the new week will bring. Sarah westwood, thank you. Later this morning, jake tapper will be joined by dr. Debra birx, the task force coordinator. The situation is plrly tough for rural hospitals. There are fears that are growing there that some of the facilities may close for good. Reporter among the Rolling Hills and the open fields, a laid back community, to me its one of the best places to live. Reporter Rural America has largely been able to avoid the worst of the coronaviruss. No packed icus and wards filling up. But there are people with covid19. 80 of Rural Counties across the country have now reported cases and though it is to where near the spikes seen in the areas, for doctors liex Donovan Beckett in West Virginia its been devastating. Having covid on top of it, a struggling Health Care System has been burden some. Reporter its one more financial burden on struggling rural hospitals already try ing to stay afloat. 19 rural hospitals closed last year. Victims of cuts to medicare and medicate funding and reduced populations. Its just a perfect storm for armagedd armageddon. An, bgyn in missouri serve ises about 5,000 people. When elected procedures came to a halt in response to the coronavirus, their revenues drop ed by more than half. When we were already in a tremendously fragile financial situation, its really put a tremendous burden on our ability to meet payroll. The hospital furloughed some staff and reduced pay us across the board desperate to avoid running out of money and having to close, which would be devastate ing ing to the commun. These are the vulnerable possiblelations. They are older and sicker and more vulnerable to the coronavirus menace. Its critical for our area to keep the hospital here. Reporter his patients are both recovering from covid19 and said having a hospital with familiar faces closer to home made all the difference. We are about an hour from any other health care facility. And there are times when people need Emergency Care and we need it now. Reporter back in West Virginia, williamson memorial will likely shut down any day. We have obviously had to do away with elected procedures on an already struggling volume level. So that creates a perfect storm and make it is difficult. Reporter after filing for bankruptcy late last year, the hospital was hoping a future partnership could save it. Then came covid19. It was the last straw and they decided they would go ahead and close the hospital. Reporter the relief package passed last month provided some temporary relief to rural hospitals with a 100 billion fund for health care providers. Its not enough. We were a vulnerable and remain a vulnerable and are probably now a more vulnerable rural hospital. Because theres no foundational change. As for those elective procedures that so many rural hospitals depend on, lifting those restrictions will be up to state and local governments and that is a conversation that some states are are already having. Cnn, virginia. Our thanks for that report. Reports out of north korea this morning, a mysterious train stop are adding to this intrigue around kim jongun. His current condition is still unknown. This is days after cnn first reported that the u. S. Is monitoring intelligence that kim is in, quote, grave danger after surgery. Will ripley reported from inside north korea 19 times since 2014. Hes following this mystery from tokyo. So will, youre our goto guy here. You have seen so much in north korea. What are you seeing this morning that telling you something extraordinary might be happening . Reporter good morning, well, look. Even when kim jongun vanished from public site for 40 days in 2014 and he was recovering from surgery, it was nothing like this in terms of the speculation and the conflicting reports running the full spectrum of him being fine to being at deaths door. These are reports that i suspect are based on secondhand information apt jim sciutto received information from u. S. Intelligence they were monitoring information that kim jonguns health informs grave danger after a surgical procedure. Rumors are spreading like wildfire. I have wellplaced source who is have no idea, days after jims report, what is happening with kim jonguns health. The reason for that is that only a very small group of people have direct knowledge. So i frankly am take inging a l reports im hearing with a grain of salt until we hear confirmation, denial, facts from north korea. They have been radio silent in that regard. They have been sending a a he issage to this leader or that leader. These are encrypted emails that other people sign off on. They prove nothing. No recent pictures or video. All we have to do is read the tea leaves. We did get a new clue overnight in terms of the is satellite images released. It shows u. Kim jonguns train his luxurious beach front compound. Its a place i have visited before. The fact his train is there i find interesting. He often flying his own plane. Its more convenient to travel. It could indicate maybe he had surgery and cant fly right now. Maybe theres a serious procession about to leave from his compound becaustrains serve role. His father died on this train and was taken back to pyongyang. But even the presence of the train doesnt prove or disprove anything about his health. The only answers well get are from the north korea bens themselves. The world is waiting for that information. Will ripley, thank you. Thank you. He opened the show as dr. Fauci, the National Health expert of this ongoing pandemic. Translitted the president s recent remarks about covid19. Take a look. Anybody that needs a test gets a a test. They are there. They have the tests. The tests are beautiful. Okay, a couple things. I dont know if i would describe the test as beautiful. Unless your idea is having a cotton swab tickle your brain. When he said everyone can get a test, what he meant was almost no one. So cnn chief media correspondent Brian Stelter with us now. Talk about saying, listen, i want brad pitt and just getting it laid out right there. This is the incredible powerful of cnn and new day. Dr. Fauci was on a few weeks ago and asked on the morning show, who would you want to have play you. I think as maybe as a joke he said brad pitt, but ask and you shall receive when youre one of the top doctors. Can you imagine the call he was making a at home from snl asking to participate. But i guess these actors and celebrities dont have a lot to go do either right now. They are at home just like most of the rest of us. So its actually pretty easy to get brad pitt to come on snl. I also loved how the end of this cold open, brad pitt got more serious. He took makeup off. Watch. Im getting fired. But until then, im going to be there putting out the facts for wherever is listening and when i hear things like the virus can be cured if everyone takes the tide pod challenge, ill be there to say, please dont. And to the real dr. Fauci, thank you for your calm and your clarity in this unnerving time. Ask thank you to the medical workers, First Responders and families for being on the front line. And now live, kind of, from all across america, its saturday nieght. What a difference a great wig makes. He transforms in a moment right this. Its grat to hear that tribute to dr. Fauci and other heroes of this experience on snl. You know what i noticed . This is the second time theres an athome episode of the late night show. Like a lot of these late night shows and entertainment shows, they are getting more professional looking and formalized and its starting to look like real tv again. Whats happening is just like the rest of the country, people are getting settled in for what may be a Long Duration experience of being at home, of hunkering down. These shows are getting pretty good at doing it. As we all have had to get good at doing it. Before you go, theres one more sketch you want to talk about. Tell me about it. I dont know what was going on with this sketch, we featured our friends a at headline news. Definitely not me. If they power day me, i know it. It was a little chris cuomo vibe going on. Well show you the visdeo. I have been quarantined in my guest house for ten days now. Unfortunately, i did pass the virus to my teenage daughter sarah. Shes doing fine, although shes stuck in here with me. B but were get ago long okay, right, sarah . So they have the chris cuomo background down pretty perfectly. The but the idea of the sketch is you have the teenage daughter work the snapchat filters working against him. Im just glad my 3yearold cant quite work the camera yet, guys. Were all grateful for that. Thank you so much. Thank you. You can catch brian here on cnn. Well be right back. I just love hitting the open road and telling people that Liberty Mutual customizes your insurance, so you only pay for what you need [squawks] only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. The coronavirus pab demic is affecting us a of us in different ways. Theres no doubt what were ere liveing through is challenging. Unlike anything we have ever experienced before buzz were doing it not just individually, but collectively as well. Our next guest knows about overcoming adversity. He served in vooet new mexiietn. He spent six years as a prisoner of war. Captain charlie plum is with us now. Captain, i first want to say thank you for your service and for what you went through for this country to make sure we have the freedoms that we have. When we think about the fact that you were shot down during combat over North Vietnam and then were held for six years and you talk about how you were tortured and beaten. We know physically, you were so broken at times. How mentally did you keep from breaking . The interesting part is that the torture and the beatings and bad food and disease werent the roughest part. The toughest part in a prison situation was the isolation. They kept us separated from all the other fighter pilots. Sometimes wed have a roommate if we were lucky, but other than that, we were totally isolated. It so relates to what were going through right now with the fear and the loneliness and the frustration and the isolation and the lack of toilet paper. You cant make this stuff up. But you draw on the inner strength. Us you lose your mind as we did. I started out by going back through and trying to remember every book i had ever read, every girl i dated and that took about three months. To totally exhaust my autobiography. Then went forward and planned the future. Because we had no books to read or tv to watch or windows to look out. Not a pencil or piece of paper to write on for nearly six years. I want to listen here to part of your ted talk as well. Where you discuss how to find value in adversity. Lets listen. You will have challenges in your life. Thats part of life. The stress, the adverse ri and im convinced that adversity is a horrible thing to waste. That theres value in every experience in life. There are a lot of people, as ewe mentioned, that have anxiousty is and isolation. How do you find value. How do we find value in this crisis . I try to make it a puzzle. Im a big believer that there is value in adversity. The tricky part is finding it. So i challenge myself every day to find positive parts of negative issues. And i think we all can do that. Because there truly is value in every adversity in life. When you are in this dark place mentally, is there one thought, is there one quote, one memory, one technique you use to try to keep your sanity and to try to keep you engaged . The normal human response is to start blaming other people. We tell ourselves with this visit rattle aeel. A guy was tapping on the wall and poetry. And what he said was this. Acid does more harm than on the subject its poured. The idea is if i have a all this hate and vitriol within me, its going to destroy me. And i decided in that prison camp that if i was going to die there, i wasnt going to kill myself by being by theer aittery and throwing this pity party. Thats really the key. To take advantage of adversity, youd have to deny the fact that its anybody elses fault but yours. Take control of your destiny. Be open and honest. Tap into your support groups that you have. And challenge yourself to find the value. Captaincha charlie plum, tha you so much for taking time to be with us thank you fwen for your service and your words that i think a lot of us need to hear. Take good care of yourself. Thank you. Coming up next hour, the dilemma of how to reopen the economy and keep workers safe.
