Compared to me, i should probably go home. Announcer this is new day weekend with Victor Blackwell and christi paul. Thank you so much for being with us. We always appreciate your company. I want to tell you about breaking news right now, overnight in sri lanka, ten civilians, including children have been killed after explosions ripped through a home. This is during a raid on suspected terrorists. We have six People Killed six were killed, i should say, at least two more or are on the run. This morning, the state department is warning citizens to reconsider traveling to sri lanka because of threat of terrorism theyre seeing there. Look at your screen. Look at this. Police were led to this hideout after uncovering this garage. Its full of potential bombmaking ingredients. Officials say they recovered explosives, ball bearings. Isis flags. Uniforms. Its been less than a week since coordinated bombings tore through churches and High End Hotels in sri lanka. When those attacks killed 350 people since easter sunday. Later this morning, were sitting down with a mother whose son was killed while he was fighting for isis. She said, look, this was a kid who was happy agreeing up in canada. He became radicalized in his teenage years. Were going to talk about what she saw in him before he left for syria. Former Vice President joe biden is touting his fund raising blitz after announcing running for president. Biden raised 6. 3 million in the first 24 hours. Some of the president ial candidates are fund raising off of him. Elizabeth warren took a swac at his swanky first day fundraiser. Orourke said more people contributed to his campaign in smaller doses. Joining me now, cnns jessica dean. So the former Vice President has more fundraisers planned we know. Are they going to be in that swanky vein, as she called . Right. Good morning to both of you. We do know that the former Vice President has more fundraisers coming up and these on the west coast. May 8th in los angeles. This one on thursday was in philadelphia at the home of a comcast executive. Listen, these are the more typical ways of fundraising in the past. Remember, joe biden has been at this some 36 years now. This is how hes used to fund ravin fundrafund fundraising. Those big fundraisers seem to be out for democrats and those small grassroots seems to be in. And the question is how does that balance out. And theres no question him getting into the race shifted all of the dynamics. That is what everyone really anticipated. And thats certainly what has beared out. What weve seen over the past couple of days since the former Vice President got into the race is that you talked about it, some of the democratic rivals who, really, up until this point, and theres a lot of them, had shied away from taking direct hits at one another. And really have kept to kind of talk about what they were focused on. And you heard Elizabeth Warren talking about it. Bernie sanders has been fund raising off of him as well. Saying something similar about bigger fundraisers in emails to supporters. Weve certainly heard all of that. Weve also heard Elizabeth Warren talking about the differences between him and her when it comes to the Financial Services industry. So, it has certainly shifted the dynamics in that way. And then also, too, the question of fundraising when Vice President biden got into the race. The question is, can he raise the money . Can he compete with beto orourke. Thats the highest number weve seen, orourke coming in with 6. 1 million a few weeks back, guys. Jessica dean, thank you so much. Joining me democratic president ial candidate andrew yang. Andrew, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. Off of the jessica dean report there, 6. 3 million for Vice President biden in the first 24 hours. Senator sanders raised a check of a lot of money in the first quarter. Is it money, support, the polls showing democrats want experience . Whats that mean to you, potentially, as an outsider businessman running in this race . Well, we received over 100,000 donations from individual americans from around the country. Im set to make that in the base of grassroots fundraising. Im thrilling that Vice President biden is in the race. But america is searching for new energy and people with different experiences. Let me ask you about a tweet you sent out. You said, gop is a flawed measurement that doesnt reflect how were doing. Id be thrilled to celebrate an uptick in Childrens Health or decrease in drug overdoses. This comes after the finding that the economy drew by 2. 3 in the first quarter. If youre the nominee for the democrats, how do you go, how do you make your case against the president , who is in office during this good time economically for the country . Well, im here campaigning in iowa. And most americans arent feeling any increase in gdp in their daytoday lives. Were still in an economy where almost half americans cant afford an unexpected 400 bill. And the headline Unemployment Rate, the Labor Force Participation rate is the same as when donald trump campaigned in 2016, saying the Unemployment Rate was fake. So, when you go to americans around the country, a lot of them are not feeling any of this gdp growth. Thats being enjoyed by some parts of the country. So, lets talk about income let me just say this, you probably have more policy statements and positions on your website than maybe most, if not all of your primary opponents. Everything from medicare for all, to what to do about the penny. But your big idea is the universal basic income. Ubi. This freedom dividend you talk about. 1,000 a month for every adult in the United States. We dont have a heck of a lot of time. But make your case why. Well, right now, you have amazon soaking up 20 billion in business every year. And paying zero in taxes. And so, for americans around the country, how are they experiencing any of the gains from technological innovation . If we put a freedom dividend in the hands of every american adult, a lot of that money would get circulated right back into their local communities and local businesses. It would make our children stronger. It would make us stronger, mentally healthier. And the best way to appear for our country in the process of automating away retail jobs, recall center jobs, fast food drives and eventually Truck Driving jobs which would be a disaster. You suggested this added tax. Wouldnt that hurt the people who live handtomouth, the people who are tthe poorest in country . Again, were putting 1,000 in the americans hands. You can tailor valueadded tax far more heavily on people who can most afford it. But we have to join the rest of the industrialized world. Every other advanced company has a valueadded tax in part to avoid Companies Like amazon paying zero in taxes. Is there a benefits tradeoff, if americans opt into this 1,000 a month . What are they giving up to get that money . Well, the freedom dividend, its universal for every adult. It is optin. If you opt in, youd be foregoing benefits from certain existing programs. Which one . A lot of the cash equivalent programs. So, housing assistance. Fuel subsidies. Other things that put money into peoples hands to buy basic needs. Social security . Social security, its an optin the sense that if youre getting over 1,000 in Social Security in the freedom dividend would not necessarily be additive. But when i talk to retirees, most married couples, between the two of them are receiving less than 2,000 a month in Social Security. Let me ask you, there are a lot of policy prescriptions on your website. But theres just one section of Foreign Policy first principles. Its not a lot of detail about Foreign Policy. Let me ask you about the breaking news today. In sri lanka. What weve seen over the last week. There were isis flags, isis uniforms there. What would be your prescription for, now that the caliphate has dissolved of fighting the ideology of isis . Well, to me, right now, our Foreign Policy has been gone in the wrong direction, in part, because were not doing well at home. Were experiencing recordlevels of despair. Economic insecurity. Drug overdoses and suicides. So, we have to make ourselves strong at home and then be much better able to counter toxic ideologies and other parts of the world because people will see were a fair and just society. Final question, is there an age in which its too old to be president of the United States . I think its up to the American People to decide. I would suggest were in the midst of whats called the Fourth Industrial Revolution where technology is transforming our way of life. It would be imperative for the American People to have leadership that understands what Technology Means in todays economy. Andrew yang, thanks so much. Thanks for having me. In a plea to keep this job, Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein told President Trump he would make sure that the president is treated fairly in special counsel Robert Muellers probe. According to the Washington Post an official told rosenstein, quote, i can land the plane. Unquote. Rosenstein opted to wear a wire to secretly record conversations with the president. In a statement to cnn responding to the post report, rosenstein said the only comment i made to President Trump about the russia investigation is the same commitment i made to congress, so long as i was in charge, it would be conducted as expeditiously as possible. In a New Washington post abc news poll shows, 47 of americans say they believe the tread did try to interfere in the investigation. And did it in a way that obstructed justice but in that sale poll, the majority also said they do not believe congress should start impeachment proceeding. In a few minutes the president is set to leave the white house to go to the Trump Golf Club set to play golf there with Prime Minister shinzo abe. Boris is there now. What do we expect the conversations on the golf course today . Reporter hey, gorod morning christi, yes, a lot for the president to discuss. The ability to stabilize that regend and denuclearize north korea. The president and shinzo abe to be hit the links as you said. And the president telling reporters yesterday, he was looking forward to potentially attending a sumo match while he was there. Of course, the president locked in a wrestling match of his own with a new 2020 hopeful former Vice President joe biden. Biden launched his campaign with a video that included a criticism of President Trump and some of this comments related to racist violence in charlottesville, virginia, a couple years ago. The president , of course, saying there were very fine people on both sides in a conflict between neonazis and counterprotesters. Yesterday, the president was asked if he still believed there were very fine people on both sides. Listen to his response. Ive answered that question. And if you look at what i said, will you see that question was answered perfectly. And i was talking about people that went because they felt very strongly about the monument to robert e. Lee. A great general, whether you like it or not. He was one of the great generals. Ive spoken to many generals here, right at the white house. And many people thought of the generals. They think that he was maybe their favorite general. People were there protesting the taking down of the monument of robert e. Lee. Everybody knows that. Reporter despite the president defending his response there, lets not forget that he had to continue to clarify those comments soon after he made them. There was even a threat of resignations from some white house officials as a result of those comments. The fallout was pretty big for the white house after that blunder. The president also took shots at biden over his age. The president , despite being only four years younger than biden saying that the new president ial hopeful makes him feel like a vibrant young man. We should also mention President Trump is headed to green bay, wisconsin, tonight, where hes having a rally. The president trying to counter the white house Correspondents Dinner a big event here in washington, d. C. Set for tonight. Victor and christi. Boris, thank you. Six suspected terrorists were killed also. And at least two more on the run after police engaged in this gun fight. We want to take a moment to show you video here. Look at this. Police were led to that hideout after they recovered this garage of potential bombmaking material that youre seeing there. Theyve uncovered explosive, ball bearings, isis flags and uniforms. And i want to introduce you to christiane boudreaux. Shes the mom of a young man who was killed and formed that terror group. Christiane, thank you for being here. I want to ask you, have you been able i know you said he was a happy boy. He was a young man when he became radicalized living in canada. Have you been able to identify a vulnerability to your son. A characteristic, a life event that would have drawn him to isis . Absolutely, there are very few life events i can define, quite honestly. He lost his brother when he was 10 years old. I had a baby that i lost to crib death. That was a Significant Impact to him. He went quiet, was withdrawn. And then i went through a relationship with the father that was quite abusive that left him feeling powerless. At that time, he had also difficulty getting along with his peers fitting in. He was extremely intelligent. But he had a difficult time connecting with them on that age level. I understand that you thought he was in egypt learni ining ar at the time and he was really in syria fighting for isis. How did you find out where he was . I found out because i had some intelligence agents show up on my door step. My son left in november 12th, 2012. Quite some time ago. And i didnt hear from the Intelligence Services until the end of january 2013. Did your son communicate with you at all during that time that he was actually in syria . He communicated with me at first. When he first arrived in turkey. Thats when i thought she was in egypt. Then he went quiet for about two months. Apparently, thats when he crossed over the border and they do the training. Takeaway the passport. And didnt let him communicate with anybody. Once we regained communication again, thats when i asked him if thats where he was. And we communicated right up until the middle of the summer in 2013. Thats when he went from al nusra and moved to isis. Help us understand, as a mother, what you do when you get that news . And when you go for a couple of months without hearing from your son, that had to have been abnormal . It was extremely abnormal and it took a lot of processing time for me. I had to sit down and think what was this all about. I didnt know anything about the civil war in syria. I didnt know anything about these organizations and groups. You worry every night. You wait for a phone call every night. The research i did was incredible. And what i saw of videos was horrific. It was a lot to process. I felt very much alone. There was nobody i could share any of this with. Thats why i know you founded the group of mothers for life. A network of moms supporting each other learning to combat radicalization. With that said, what are we, as parents, missing, that were losing children to this fight . Hardest part is we dont realize that theyre involved with many of these extremist groups. The minute theres a gap or personality change, we cant do it by ourselves. Were too emotionally connected to our children and we need to reach out to other resources to have that support. It takes a village to raise a child. And it takes a lot of education to understand. We need to reach out and use those resources as soon as possible. Well, again, the network is mothers for life, if you want to look it up. Christiane boudreaux, were so sorry for what youve gone through and the loss of your son. Thank you for taking the time and the loss of your son. Thank you for taking the time to talk about it. Thank you very much. This week former Vice President joe biden joined the 2020 race for the white house. As he hits the trail, some black women voters already frustrated with his candidacy and the concept surrounding it. And the que way he handled the testimony of anita hill. Its still a controversial issue for many. Some say he wasnt sensitive or fair to hill. There are question on bidens rivals on the nomination. Dozens of black women, more than dozens, gathered at she, the people, forum in texas. They pressed candidates on why africanamerican women would vote for them. The event highlighted the frustration with the idea that only a white man can defeat President Trump. I should say there were more than just africanamerican women at this forum in texas. Here with me to discuss is latosha brown, cofounder of black voters matter. Welcome. Thank you. And Vice President joe biden call to the speak with anita hill. Saying i cant respond by saying im sorry what happened with you. Ill be satisfied when i know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose. What does real change and real accountability and real purpose look like to you . I think when were looking at american politics, so much of white patriarchy is infused in the political discourse. We saw what happened in kavanaugh, and we saw what happened with anita hill and bidens participation in it, that we have to take a long stayin at how do we eliminate this patriarchy, how do we eliminate sexism, and women really being victimized by that. So, what shes saying is, we want to see policy. Its not just an apology. We want to see policy. We want to see policy that actual actually addresses that. We want to see policy why theres a wage gap between women and men. We want to see a policy around Sexual Harassment of women in the workplace. And within the community. So, i think what she was speaking to is something greater. And it is that women are a solid force. And theyre going to be a solid force in this next political election. And talking broader about the campaign and really some of the other candidates here. You said, i read to a reporter, that you were initially eager for biden to get into this race. But now youre not so much. You said, quote, youre over white men running the country. What changed for you . You know, one, i think we have this wonderful options. Weve got alternatives. Where i think theres a couple things that are happening. One, women are very frustrated that our issues are not getting centered. That this whole idea i also feel like this whole idea you that got to have a white man to beat trump, that is being fed by the media. What youre seeing, though, were talking to people in the community, young people and women, theyre looking for something different. Theyre looking for somebody different that, one, can not only move super voters but can ignite and move young voters and excite the base. So, out of 45 president s. Weve had 45 that have been white men and only one africanamerican. We are looking for candidates that are different and represent diverse backgrounds and diverse experience. Let me challenge your premise here. You say this theory that only a white man can come in and save the Democratic Party and beat President Trump. But joe biden specifically has a political career thats decades long. That he could reach both into the White Working Class that some say you have to prioritize to win. Others say you have to prioritize the africanamerican base. He has decades of history with africanamerican voters in a lot of the early states. Would that not be his strength, as those decades of relationships in both communities the democrats would need to win . I certainly think he has friends but he also ran for president before and he did not win. And hes in a different paragon. The landscape has shifted. Its the baby boomers have been in the majority of america for the last decade. Now, the majority in america are not the baby boomers. You have young people, Charity Trust did a study that said 62 of the voters are look for people who are progressive. And i also think people are looking for folks who are not part of the establishment. While he does have strength, there are weaknesses with his campaign. Obviously, there is a black woman running for office. Senator kamala harris. Im just going to read this, a professor from the university suggests, this is a quote, senator harris criminal justice record in california might be a Sticking Point for black women because black men and the black community were disproportionately affected by the decisions that she made. The policy would not be be voting for a white man, would it not . I do think thats a concern. Also i dont want to minimize this idea of not voting for biden is based on the fact that hes a white man. I think its reflective of theres a leadership construct that says theres a white patriarchy, that those are the folks that can lead. I also think theres a policy that biden has been a part of that hes actually supported that raises questions as well. In addition to that, we are looking for Innovative New leadership that actually is reflective of a democracy. And when you see the people who live in america, when you see what happened in the midterm election, wasnt by accident that you have this wave of women candidates. People are looking for a different kind of candidate with a different kind of message that represents a more reflective democracy. Latosha, brown. Pleasure to have you here. So the white house Correspondents Dinner was i mean, it was one of the hottest tickets in town. Celebrities and journalist and americas elected leaders. They rubbed elbows. Have laughs. Yeah, dress up. It seems that the night of glamour has lost its luster. White house staffers have been told to boycott the event. The key post speaker is not a comedian now, hes a historian. Joining us, is emily heil. Let me start with you. You say its lost its luster. But the White House Correspondents Association has chosen this event. Why the conscious shift from what weve expected in past years . Yeah, they say they want a reset. They say theyre responding to criticisms of this dinner that go back before the trump administration. Its just a bad look for journalists to show up, you know, all dressed up in black tie finery, hanging out with their sources. Celebrating themselves. Its just gotten so celebrity packed. It was just a night of excess and it wasnt a good look for journalists. So, they want to take it back to its sort of less sexy roots. And now its sort more of a dinner where journalists gather. And they talk about the First Amendment and honor the work of their colleagues. And so, thats what they say thats thats what they wanted. Now, unintentionally, theyve sucked some of the fun out of the dinner. I heard even last night, going to the preparties, you already heard grumblings from white house correspondents saying we want to make the dinner fun again. But can they do that and still not have the criticisms out there. But this have a really unseemly night. I dont know if you can balance the two. Were going to see tonight with the featured speaker, hes not a comedian, hes a biographer. Heres what he said, he said the White House Correspondents Association has asked me to make the case for the First Amendment. My major worry these days is that we americans will forget who we are and should serve as our chief custodians in preserving that rich storyhouse of memory. While i have never been mistaken for a standup comedian, i promise that my History Lesson will not be dry. Is there anybody who is vulnerable to a jab or two tonight . Will we see that . No, i dont think well see any jabs. Thats an incredibly Important Message and something we should be thinking about. I dont know that Everyone Wants to get dressed up, full makeup, get a blowout, as my said said, do i want to show up and get a lecture. Its not the format of that. Im not saying that the message isnt completely relevant and manage that journalists shouldnt be paying attention to and broadcasting to the world. Of course, it is. But is it the format that was fun, the dinner had the three elements that are missing this year i think thats taken the glitz and glamour. That was comedian, celebrities and the president. I think not having the president there is the thing that makes the dinner untenable. It makes it untenable to have comedy. So the president has gotten what he wanted in some capacity. He didnt like this . He didnt like the dinner. And so, now the dinner doesnt exist like before. So, yeah, did trump kill the dinner a bit . I think he might have. Not just having the president be there, he hasnt been there in past years but now the boycott of everyone in the white house. We just showed the video of Sarah Sanders and Kellyanne Conway. Yeah, he put it out that they werent supposed to come to the dinner in solidarity to him. Some of them had rsvpd to various organizations. They had to cancel that. I hope some kept their receipts for their gowns. Because they had to cancel late in the game. You wont see members there. Thats a snub. But the White House Association said that was never the point of the dinner but certainly not having the administration there kind of diminishes the night of a truce. Were putting everything aside, put ago side partisan politics. We can get together, break bread, have a cocktail, have a laugh. Thats not what this night is anymore. Whether or not this night can sustain itself, certainly, theres going to be new leadership of the White House Correspondents Association that decides to take it to another level in years to come. Maybe ron chernow will surprise us all and slay it. Its certainly not going to be the busy night that it once was. And he promises it will not be a dry exactly. Emily heil, thank you so much.
