Lets bring in the panel. Michael smerconish and errol lewis. What do you make of this latest stream of fear that we are heading for bad midterms within the gop. I thought the whole cell was trump attacked him to the base and sure there was going to be some friction between them and the traditional establishment. But ultimately they were on the side of the people. I think the president would luke to have legislative achievement. He would like to get tax reform done, something relative to the Affordable Care act. He is inoculating himself. Fights with establishment republicans. He can then lay it off on them. Notice what he has done in the last couple of weeks with iran, daca, cuba, the Affordable Care act. He has taken against president obama for executive order and he has done the same thing. It is not clear what the relationship is between the president and steve bannon. Im not convinced bannon is acting at the president s behest. He spoke to the president three times recently as he came out and made those statements over the weekend. Something fascinate anything sara murrays reporting talking to all of these, about a dozen republican officials inside and outside the white house. A top official said wouldnt it be ironic that steve bannon helped get hum elected and impeached. Meaning, the question is raised, is steve bannon making it easier for democrats to take over the house in 2018 by saying everyone can be primaried, every republican, other than ted cruz. Thats right. The larger war that steve bannon has set off, this civil war within the Republican Party look to, a certain extent this was going to happen anyway. People want Different Things within conference. On the other hand, there are a couple dozen seats by which the republicans control the house of representatives. That does in fact, lead to the only sure remedy for all the insults, the tweets, the answer to all of those things is to organize the grouped level. The democrats are very clear about that. And to start an investigation. A real investigation that republicans have not undertaken about what went on during that campaign whats going on on with russian collusion and whats going on with the many, many conflicts of and that trump and his family have. You think the fears are real, sme smerc, that the gop loses in the midterm . History is on the side of the democrats having a good year. Just how good a year remains to be seen. What i dont buy into the predicate this could lead to impeachment. No evidence of any bribery, trees on, high crimes and misdemeanor. It is all the the 25th amendment talk i hear. I know among those very antitrump circles, this is reaching a fever pitch. I just dont see the substance that backs any of it up. With clinton it came down to perjury. So it wasnt a high crime or misdemeanor. Its what they had. Stop going out of the scope. Because they see what happened with clinton. But a special prosecutor can do whatever he wants. Errol, what about policy . You see the president golfing with people he didnt necessarily get along with. Lindsey graham said bluntly, if we dont get this thing done, were dead. This isnt about Mitch Mcconnell. This isnt his fault. If we dont get tax reform done, were dead. This was Lindsay Graham trying one more angle to try to get to the president. He often will listen to what he sees on television as opposed what he is told on the golf course or facetoface in the oval office. If we dont slash tax, wreck obama care, were going to get voted it of office. The polls dont support that. It wont happen until 2018. Thats right. They will play out over time. It is not entire clear when the critical moment comes next fall there are going to be a whole bunch of single voter issues who all they wanted to do was wreck the Obamacare Exchanges and see premiums soar. Im not clear that is a winning formula in the first place. We will see what the republicans can put together. All of this talk about weve got to do this, weve got to do this. We have to build consensus where, very importantly, consensus does not exist. Also, theres something to be said in Campaign Politics for getting something done near or to the actual election. Fair in they will say they want to get it done in the first election, theres saleability to that. You have the election coming up. Look what we just did. So michael, a little bit of this will be on parallel tracks. You are right to want to talk about that. This is a culture world. How does that play into the mix . It is such a good point. When all is said and done, hes still not obama and he is still not hillary. To his base, chris, poppy, errol, thats what matter most. We Pay Attention more to the foibles and stumbles, but the base remains intact, united by all the people he still the opposes. Well, the party, just looking at the polling from last month, 85 approval for the president among republicans. So much higher than for mcconnell and for, you know, paul ryaning et cetera. What about health care . The dems threaten to go shut down the government over this. Whether they can get anything done well see. How much are the democrats risking if they are willing to shut down the government over this . There is a lot about fighting on the democratic side. And the republicans are involved in their own search for a purpose, a unifying principle everyone cancan gettogether around. I think theyre trying to figure out if daca will be the hill they decide to die on. If daca will be something they will shut down the government over to try to fight against the wall. Is this going to be something they really actually do . Are the tax cuts that are being contemplated so destructive that democrats can say, you know what, weve got to stop everything, rather than let this go through. Is the amendment or the wreckage of Health Care Going to be something . Now, theyve suggested that they are willing to do that and their base, the Democratic Base which we dont talk about very much, they, in fact, might push them to do that. There is more than one way to lose if youre a democrat. One in a primary. Itching to run and to run on the proposition that some of the mainstream democrats have not fought hard enough for things the party should be fighting for. You never know, michael. Its all about reading the tea leaves. Yeah, trump canceled the costsharing payments. It is too deep in the weeds and probably rendered moot by his action now anyway. But hes also supposedly open to legislation on them. Wouldnt it be interested if he winds up canceling the payments. Didnt cut a deal to stabilize the markets, put the costsharing payments back in, and he signs it. Look, he has been talking so long about how the Affordable Care act is in a death spiral. Through the action he took last week, he ensured that will be the outcome. This among the litany of issues you just raised is the one that posed the greatest problem for him. For all the problems within the gop, the Democratic Party is in the worst shape its been since reconstruction. When you look at the white house, the house, the senate, gubernatorial mansions, state legislativers across the United States. They have to get their act together. Assume not going to deal with that kind of petty stuff. This is a town that seems to relish gossip, rumor, innuendo, and they feed on it. They feed on it in a very destructive way. I dont work that way. Im just not going to dig phi the question. Errol, heres the question. The answer doesnt work. It just doesnt. It doesnt sound like hes saying he didnt say it. If you want to deal with the pettiness of d. C. , you have a very easy way to dispense of it. I never said it. The report was wrong. Why doesnt he say that . Well, he cant. If you think about it, just saying, he doesnt want to participate with it. Thats not how he deals. That is a shot across the b on ow or a response to the people in the room who hear this and eventually told a reporter this he heard it. That is the fight he seems to be lose. We keep hearing about the staffing chaos. There were a number of different desks that do not have managers in front of them. That is Rex Tillersons doing as a strategy that he agreed on with the president from day one. The reality is after the joke, after the chuckling is of, we have to ask ourselves do we have a functioning state department, a diplomacy that actually is meaningful in the world compared with the march of the generals, the trade wars, the tough talk, the blinksmanship with north korea and all the other stuff coming out of the white house. And the takeaway for me was that case was a combination of the objective. You knew his fight record, his own loss and knockouts. But there was also a subjective quotient. Like that in the Colin Kaepernick case, you know his statistics. You can chair him to those who are part of the team. But there is also a suggestive quality here. Does he suit the type of offense that a particular team is actually going to run. I think those with trained eyes, im thinking of a bob costas, say hes better than many of the backups and hes better than some of the startups and he probably does deserve a shot. But whether you can successfully litigate that, even with mark geragos as your coup, remains to be seen. It will be somewhat of an interesting question. Because of subject activity, they dont have to prove why they did things, i dont think, in this kind of forum.
