Against the Republican Party, against its preferred candidates and policies. The party on a whole. No surprise reconciliation would take some time. But for Republican Leaders who thought trump would be moving closer towards them, they have a major problem. Im going to do what i have to do. I have millions of people that voted for me. Reporter donald trump, upping the ante in his battle with the gop. Escalating tensions with House Speaker paul ryan. I will give you a very solid answer, if that happens, about one minute after that happens. Okay . Reporter trump, suggesting that if the nations highestranking republican doesnt endorse him, the presumptive nominee may try to remove ryan as chairman of the Republican National convention. Id like to have his support. If he doesnt want to support me thats fine and we have to go about it. Reporter former Vice President ial nominee and trump top supporter sarah palin going further, pledging to help defeat ryan in the race for his wisconsin seat. I think paul ryan is soon to be cantered as an arid canter. His political career is over but for a miracle because he has sos did respected the will of the people. Reporter trump saying he wont go rogue with ryan but with the entire party. Does the party have to be together . Unified . Different than anybody that ever ran for office. I actually dont think so. Reporter setting the stage for a facetoface meeting thursday. As the gop riff widens between those who issupport him. Help with any Committee Donald Trump is on. Jeb bush is not an honorable person. Lindsey graham is not an honorable person. Reporter some drawing a hard line vowing to skip the convention or not vote. You have to listen to people that have chosen the nominee. I think it would be foolish to ignore them. Senator john mccain, who once calmed trumps statements uninformed and indeed dangerous says heat now support him, with conditions. I think its important for donald trump to express his appreciation for veterans. Reporter others pressing feverishly for a third party option, including one group, conservatives against trump. Their concern that trump isnt conservative enough to carry the party torch. This is called the Republican Party. Not called the conservative party. Reporter this as trump continues to change his tune on tax hikes for wealthy americans. Ive come up with the biggest tax cut by far of any candidate, anybody, and i put it in. When it comes time to negotiate, i feel less concerned with the rich than i do with the middle class. Reporter and on minimum wage. I like the idea of, let the states decide, but i think people should get more reporter and those policy differences are just that. With paul ryan. Thats no small thing. While paul ryan has pointed out, guys, that the tone of Donald Trumps campaign has been concerning up to this point, theres also Serious Problems on the policy front. Much of what donald trump has been running on is the polar opposite of what paul ryan has made his career on. Guys, no question about it, when you think what is going to happen in a facetoface meeting these arent the kind of issues you can solve in one facetoface meeting. I did like that civil war poster behind you. Looks like the captain america iron man movie. Which is which . That is the question. They both like to wear tights. Intensifying his attacks on Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail, trump blasting her as a nasty enabler of her husbands infidelity. Hillary clinton firing back calling his Foreign Policy plans reckless. We have more this morning. Reporter election day may be six long, long months away, but donald trump and Hillary Clinton, well, theyre already trying to draw blood on the campaign trail, stumping out west this weekend. Trump invoked bill clintons impeachment and accused Hillary Clinton of enabling her husbands sexual misconduct. And hillary was an enabler and she treated these women horribly. Just remember this. And some of those women were destroyed, not by him, but by the way that Hillary Clinton treated them after everything went down. Reporter now, trump also said clinton wants to take peoples guns away. Clintons camp fired back saying trump has no regard at all for the facts, and continued to argue trump is a loose cannon questioning his past statements including suggestions that the u. S. Killed the families of terrorist, round up and deport the nations million of undocumented immigrants and punish women who have had abortions. Trump walked back calls to kill femme members of terrorist which is a war crime and punishing with who have had abortions. Alisyn, chris, back to you guys, my friends. Chris, thanks for all of that. We discuss with phil mattingly, David Gregory and host of the David Gregory pod cast and jackie cue sinkucinich. Glad to have you all with us. What sometimes happens, overheated rhetoric and ratcheting of you of rhetoric and then when donald trump sits down with sworn enemies everything comes out fine. Because somehow in person they are able to make it work. What do we think is going to happen with this meeting . Youre exactly right. Ive been told that many times with republicans who said that with trump. They get facetoface with donald trump and its very civil. Its true, Donald Trump Holds a lot of cards but he doesnt hold all of the cards, and paul ryan did seek the republican nomination. The Republican Party did not seek the trump nomination. So there is some hope there will be, you know, weve talked about this before, not meeting in the middle, but maybe meeting 40 of what paul ryan, secretary of the party, wants, because he needs their votes come november. David what do you think . Well, i think theres a process in any nomination fight where the rest of the Republican Party has to fall in line and rally around the nominee. Now, in this case, that is starting to happen, but very, very slowly, and there are a lot of republicans, particularly conservative republicans, who are not there on trump. Some who will never get there. Who are Establishment Republicans or more conservative republicans, and paul ryan does have his own base of political support. Not just for his own seat but within the Republican Caucus of the house. So, you know, he doesnt have to fall in line, and he doesnt have to fall in line yet. He has an agenda that hes going to pursue no matter what, this is where are you on this, mr. Trump and lets negotiate . And he would not have to endorse. All kinds of calculations. Ryan could be thinking about his own political future, about the future of this particular agenda that hes got here, but hes also got a lot more clout among the house caucus that a john boehner did. He was elected, drafted, to become the house speak perp hes going to play those cards with trump right now, particularly because he has a problem with all kinds of are things he stands for. Squishiness on some are the issues and some of the things said in his tone. He can assert that as the House Speaker. You know, the tone shifted, also. Phil, i was in mexico last week. Ryans guys, trumps guys were all reaching out and saying, this is all on you guys. This is the media. This is bogus. They dont have any problems with each other. All the speaker said was, hes not ready yet. Thats not thats a problem. Isnt it . Thats an advantage for trump base and a lot of the other party elders and senior officials saying theyre not with him and that this is being blown out. Then yesterday happened, and trump on the minimum wage and on taxes said things that are innimiccal, enemy statements to the conservative agenda and then said the Republican Party isnt called a conservative party. Those are real problems. As you said earlier when they sit down this doesnt just go as rhetoric . No question what paul ryan did is politically motivated, helps provide cover in his house conference that dont want to run with donald trump. Gives them an opportunity to distance themselves. Certainly an aspect of this. But the policy side of this, everything paul ryan worked for in the last 20 years of his political career, everything on his agenda, everything that hes fought for if you want take whats on the table. Donald trunonald trump wants Social Security. Opposite where paul ryan is. On the trade, paul ryan wanted to guess transamerica cued up for approval. Donald trump exact opposite on that. Immigration. Paul ryan was not in the full amnesty category of things if you want to use that term but always open to the idea of immigration reform. Donald trump is the exact opposite of that. Everything that paul ryan has worked for, the budgets, everything thats led him to his position right now, both as house budget chairman, house ways and means chairman and now House Speaker, donald trump is running against. Thats the issue, on tone donald trump can make concessions. On policy, how do you concede these things when the gulf is extraordinarily wide. Go ahead, david. I was going to say, look, an aspect to trump not only winning as many votes as he won but the idea that he is so malleable, so flexible, as he said to George Stephanopoulos on abc yesterday, thats a big selling point for a lot of voters. Independents and republicans who want to see washington change a little bit. The remaking of the Republican Party a lot of conservatives will be uncomfortable with. Sarah palin predicted he will be cantered in august when he faced his next race. Does his political future hinge on what happens this week with donald trump . You know, sarah palin doesnt have the greatest record when it comes to the candidates that she supports or doesnt support, but hes also from wisconsin. Look plain at his district, only a small part of his district went for trump. Seems like anything can happen in 2016. But seems paul ryans political future is just fine. His district mostly went for cruz, just like the state of wisconsin. What a difference a week can make. A week ago talking about everybody worried about not able to win reelection because trump will be the standard bearer, now paw ryan, a bright light, may be in jeopardy because of trump. Makes you wonder how much is hover and puff out of the media and spin meisters versus reality . Surprised, phil, if ryan is in any way jeopardized by donald trump. I wont be surprised if trump comes out saying, you know what . Were like this. I think jackie makes a great point. Perspective needed when it comes to paul ryan being cantered. Everything is the exact opposite what he was facing. Paul ryan goes home. Part of his deal becoming House Speaker to go home. Enormous war chest. Paul ryan has a 76 Approval Rating in the most recent marquette poll. Ryans phone is ringing for putting himself out there as a prospective president ial panel, thank you. Stick around. E were want to talk about Hillary Clinton versus donald trump in a moment. Who better to ask the questions than the man on the screen himself. Shes married to a man who hurt many women, and hillary, if you look and see a study, hillary hurt many women, the women that he abused. Shes married to a man who got impeached for lying. Now, this is what donald trump said he was going to do. When he would promise, wait until i get started on hillary. So this doesnt come as a surprise. The question is, will it work, and why . Lets discuss. Bring back David Gregory, Jackie Kucinich and phil mattingly. David greigry, start us out. The plus minus. A lot in Hillary Clintons response. Weve seen the response already, shell wave it away saying this is what donald trump wants to get to in the kind of discourse in this race. I think people will, you know, not view it well. Thats been her position. I think this is classic trump in terms of what weve seen in the nomination fight, which is try to keep his opponents off balance, and running against a woman who wants to make history, becoming the first woman president , to try to bring all of this up. I dont know what the ultimate impact of this will be. Well see over time. My suspicion is that a lot of these people, a lot of voters who already dislike Hillary Clinton, their views about the clinton marriage and about bill clintons activities, all of that has already been considered and is included in their views of the clintons. So the bet here, i suppose is that youre going to reach a new younger voters, who will somehow are swayed by this, and i dont know. My suspicion is, it wont sway new people. Jackie, i want to ask you about Hillary Clintons response to this, because she has ample opportunity to return inkind sort of attacks on donald trump. Donald trump also has a notorious sexual past. In fact, he predicted himself that that would actually trip him up if he ever were to run for president. Let me remind everyone of what he said in an interview with chris matthews. Chris matthews asked him back in 1998, why dont you ever run for president . Ever think about that. Trump said, people ask me about it all the time. Matthew matthews, about you . You think about what about me . Can you imagine . Why doesnt Hillary Clinton make more hay of this . You know, weve seen it with marco rubio. When candidates have gone down to Donald Trumps level they havent won and i think the Clinton Campaign is acutely aware of that. Now, i would keep an eye on the super pacs. Seems thats whos going to do the dirty work, whos going to go after Donald Trumps part and Hillary Clinton will try to sort of float above it throughout the campaign. Look the calculation, the phase of donald trump where he sprays a lot of stuff out there and sees what tends to resonate and what doesnt. Something empirical about this for him. Right . But what do you think the concern is in terms of, the best situation here is for some women to say, you know what . Im okay with trump calling some women fat pigs or whatever the ugly things that hes said that struck a cord, because shes bad where women wheres the chance you get women to turn on a woman in this way . Talk with trump advisers, a little what David Gregory said. They look at a large portion of the electorate that wasnt around or paying attention to politics when these issue was coming up. In the 90s. Women specifically he has the problem with. Specifically and believes that women, they are literally targeting women on this that were not aware. They believe that they can change kind of the perspective of how this is viewed. Back then, every time Hillary Clinton got attacked her numbers went up. Historically whats always happened with her. He believe they can paint her as the enabler, somebody who attacked women to protect her husband. They think they can shift the narrative with a group of people that werent paying attention back then, dont have a set view on what occurred. There is little to no evidence that will actually happen but a play theyre willing to make but with good reason in the sense of 70 plus of the women electorate have negative views of donald trump. Why not try something, what you hear from them. Their biggest concern, no play to reach women voters and are willing to try this, or at least donald trump is willing to try this. Will it work . A lot of questions. I dont think the clinton teams it has any chance of works but its a shot and thats why theyre going in on it. The interesting thing for donald trump what is it disqualifying about any of these personal characteristics hes so concerned about in terms of how Hillary Clinton will be as president . Is it any different than whatever, you know, issues hes had in his marriages over time in terms of how he would be president . So i dont even think he wraunts wraunts wants to get into this. He wants to throw it out there, and jackies point, i think Hillary Clinton would be loathe to go toetotoe on this. And one of the big critics of the critics in the 90s is now on her side leading the super pac. Theyll leave it at that level to go after trump. Jackie, it would be helpful if we had information how voters respond to this. A theory, phil was saying, from the trump campaign, that this might work. It might take root. We do know. What phil said earlier has been true, jackie. You know this. You go after her about bill clinton she usually benefits from it. Years ago her numbers went up during all the impeachment, et cetera. But now, hard to know. Do young women respond to this sort of thing . I asked around about this early on in the campaign whether young women cared ar the clinton scandals of old. They were sort of like, thats in the past. Why would this matter now . That was the conversations i had. Perhaps there is interest in a broader electorate. Almost seems like a swift votelike attack. Trying to attack Hillary Clinton on something these strong on in hopes of diminishing her a little bit. Theres no evidence that would back that up at this point, but well have to see. Im just saying it turned my mothers day table ugly early when i brought it up as topic of conversation. Do any at the women feel there is an enabler dynamic and i gauss the gas face from everybody, or, these flowers are beautiful. Theres not a single meal that you have at your house you dont turn into a eck to is group, and i dont know how your family feels about this. And very little percentage of success what im trying to tell you and this did not help. This is dangerous territory and raises the question, why bring it up at all . Guess who says its a good idea . The republican presumptive nominee donald trump. Hes coming on in the 7 00 hour to explain why this issue works for him. John berman . Convicted drug lord Joaquin El Chapo guzman now held at a prison in mexico just miles from the u. S. Border. He was transferred in a big surprise move this weekend to the new lockup in juarez. Now, el chapo has not escaped once but twice from supposedly the most secure prison in the world. This priz sn not rumored to be that. Whats going on . An extradition . A rash move . Lets discuss with someone in the know. Former Deputy Assistant secretary of defense for the dea and she also knows whats going on in latin america as political analyst there and joins us now. Anna maria, what do you make of the situation . Give us clarity of purpose . Well, first i have to tell you i didnt work for the dea. I was at the pentagon. So my dea friends wont be all upset. Forget it. Let me get another guest. No, we dont know whats going [ laughter ] no. Let me its very surprising. I dont think hes about to be extradited to the United States. So why is he being transferred from a, whats considered to be a maximum security prison to a less secure prison . Well, what the Mexican Government is saying, there is some construction takes place in the max mom security jail, where, by the way, he escaped with this onemile tunnel, so they needed to transfer him to another jail and they sent him to juarez. It happens to about jail where his enemies of many of the, the killers of the cartel of juarez, they happen to be in jail there. So theres kind of a question mark. Are they sending him to a jail where he is going to be, you know hes going to be confronting or could be, his life could be potentially in danger, because it is one of its a nonsecured jail from all aspects to, it is an Enemy Territory at least from el chapos organization perspective. Theres a lot of question marks. What i do not think is going to happen, hes not going to be extradited at least within the next month, unless hes agreed to be extradited to the United States, which there seems to be no indication. There was a decision by the judge yesterday providing him one more habeas corpus, detaining any extradition process taking place within the next couple of weeks. Former Deputy Assistant secretary of defense, Drug Enforcement policy and support at the pentagon nap is the title. Is that right . Whats the right title. Give it to us. Thats correct. All right, good. Thats correct. I was that at the pentagon. All right. Good. And thats but we dont know. Im saying its a relevant title because as you point out hes going to confront enemies there. As we both know very well, you better than i, if a cartel wants something to happen in a prison, its probably going to happen. So that means they dont have a lot of time to hold him in a place thats enemy ground, in juarez, for el chapo. So what has to happen in the near term to make extradition happen or not happen . Its a legal procedure. There is at least he would have to stop appealing or requesting habeas corpus, which i guess in english would be temporary restraining orders stopping his extradition. Everything seems to indicate, even though he said he wanted to be extradited, his lawyers dont seem to think so because they keep on putting these appeals. I would say if the process continues as it is, there are still about five more months before hes extradited to the United States, within the current procedures. Now, if he wakes up today and says, i dont like this place. I would prefer to be in a jail in the United States, which seems unlikely, by the way, he could be extradited within the next week and a half. The rumor is but the if you want to shoot this down for us, the rumor is that el chapo, who by legend controls everything, right . That he is saying, yeah, yeah, yeahs p yeah. I want to be extradited. Moving him where he is now, although these gotten out of it twice, once with a laundry cart and once with that milelong tunnel he made. Do you believe theres any chance this is part of some design by el chapo to be free once again . Well, you know, with el chapo you can almost expect anything, but, boy, if i were the Mexican Government and the opened up this possibility of him escaping the third time, i think they should be concerned. I dont think that is the case. I think he was sent to this jail. They probably thought he was more secure. They would be able to control him better in this jail. By the way, its now surrounded by the army. Theyve increased security enormously, and maybe are trying to send a message to the United States that, yes, theyre willing to send him to the United States, and perhaps getting himalities closer to the border is a way to send a message. I doubt hes going to be extradited in the next month and a half or the next couple of week. I think theres still time to go. The next question, whats . Leave him here between now and the end of the year or return him to the highsecurity prison in the mexico city urban area . I have no idea. We know the u. S. Wants him here very much. See if that influences the process. The woman with many titles, thank you for being here on new day, as always. Alisyn . Shes married to a man who got impeached for lying. Hows that going to play with voters . Lets ask them. Yes. This morning weve gathered a group of independent voters. What do they think of these attacks on Hillary Clinton . Lets find out. I want to start with sha had lair, miller. Inclined to support donald trump. Yes, i am. Also a woman. Yes. And when you hear donald trump say shes an enabler. Her husband, gross infidelity, one of the great woman abusers of the world, but hillary is an enabler. I agree with him. If you think back to bill clintons discretions, she start add campaign called nuts and sluts, where she was defaming his, his what . The people he adduce bused . Where do you get your evidence, claire . From google. Thats my best friend. So she also she also labeled Monica Lewinsky as a narcissistic loony tune n. Private to one of her friends. Didnt say that in public, but i hear what youre saying. You agree with donald trump. You think it should be an issue in the race . Absolutely. Only because bill clinton is out there stumping for her, making speeches. So he put himself into the campaign. Carrie, youre another woman, so im coming to you. How do you think female voters will respond to this line of attacks . Well, im an independent, and whats important to me is how we move the country forward, and how to have a National Conversation. There are a lot of issues in this country. This particular issue is not the front burner, and i think what we need now is, we need to look at the political process itself so that all of us as independents can participate in the conversation with the 30 million americans, we just couldnt participate in the primaries. We were locked out. So do you think that this is an issue that will, you know, catch fire, or do you the political process issue . No. The issue about what donald trump is saying, the attacks on Hillary Clinton against her husband. For me, im waiting to see who will talk to me as an independent and what i care about is having a process in this country where all americans get to participate, and thats not the case right now. And if we can give nick the microphone. You were leaning towards trump. Im curious, is this something that makes him more attractive to you, these types of attacks, or less . Overall, i believe that personal attacks shouldnt be the mainstay of an argument, in the process of a president ial election. But for this instance, it makes sense, it resonates, because if Hillary Clinton is going to be, you know, for women. Say that shes for women, but shes married to a man that blatantlies did respected her. Why is she to blame for what her husband did . Shouldnt she have ever for herself and go and respect herself in the sense that handling this marriage, maybe it shouldnt have worked out the way it did . Maybe she should have got a divorce . Hmm. Ian . Do you think that candidates past sexual histories should be part of this campaign . Clearly its a distraction from legitimate political debate. If were going to talk about bill clinton im more interested in grasping the distinction between her policies in terms of the impact on mass incarceration or welfaree form than i am whats going on in their bedroom or at their kitchen table. Youre a Bernie Sanders guy . Very much so. Shes got to win over a lot of sanders supporters. Very much so. Do you like the way shes handling these attacks by donald trump so far . Well, you know, i think shes in a very difficult position. I dont envy her, because, of course, you know, the debate keeps being lowered to this level. I think, you know, i would hope, that she would like the conversation to revolve more around policy and more along the direction of the country, but, you know, people are interested in good tv. There are people who are more interested in the tabloid aspect of the political process. Okay. Adam . You are an independent, but youre supporting Hillary Clinton. What do you think . I support Hillary Clinton. I think so far that Donald Trumps war on women has gone above reproach, and thats something we need to address directly. Youre offended by it . Im absolutely offended by it. Im actually afraid of a donald Trump Presidency for the future of womens empowerment and equality in this country, which so far has escaped any of the dialogue and the media as escaped, all dialogue you dont think weve been talking about whether or not donald trump has said sort of unkind things about women . I dont think that voters from woken up and realized the severity of some of his comments towards women. Can we go all the way down the horn, over to brian . Brian is truly undecided as far as we know and we dont know anything about where he leans. So tell us. When you hear this argument back and forth, which way does it sway you . I definitely think that this is reality tv campaigning, and that it doesnt draw me to either of the candidates. I definitely in that its more than just a personality issue of who gets elected. We have so much bigger problems in the country, and i definitely think that the partisanship that both of these candidates have to play to is what, is what im concerned with more. Yeah. We want to get you in, damon. Whats your feeling . Leaning towards hillary . I feel that that Donald Trumps accusations against her and, you know, talking about infidelity with bill clinton, i think its a smoke screen. I think he doesnt have much to say, so his disApproval Rating is really high with women. As far as women not liking donald trump. So you think its a distraction more than anything . A distraction. Trying to dig himself out of a hole. Guys, were getting a chance to talk more about this. You differ a lot from the sentiment year hearing. A chance to hear later. Your take, tweet us or post your comment on our webbook. And coming up, we will talk to the republican potential nominee donald trump in a few moments. Following a lot this morning. Lets get right to it. Wouldnt it be nice if we could get along . It would not be a wise decision. I dont think it necessarily has to be unified. Im smarter than they are. He doesnt have a view. He has a slogan. Shes married to a man who was the worst abuser of women in the history of politics. I ask myself all the time, who is he talking to . A total enabler. Go after these women and destroy their lives. On two there is no clear identification of gender identity. It is open discrimination. This is no longer just a North Carolina issue. Announcer this is new day with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. Good morning, everyone. Welcome back to your new day. We begin with an epic showdown scheduled this week between donald trump and House Speaker paul ryan. At stake, just the future of the Republican Party. Ryan and trump set to meet this week to settle their differences and to try to unite the divided party. Sarah palin vowing to help defeat ryan, who is up for reelection foreign not backing trump. On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton says shes hearing from a lot of republicans who want to help her campaign. Clinton blasting trump for being reckless on Foreign Policy as trump ramps up personal attacks saying bill clinton is the worst abuser of women in political history and that Hillary Clinton is the great enabler. Hows that going to go over in this election . Weve got it cover the way only cnn can. We begin with phil mattingly. Phil . Reporter chris, it may take more than just one meeting. The ramping up of between donald trump and paul ryan, what happens next for the Republican Party . It is a major concern for top gop officials. Donald trump seems less concerned saying he doesnt need the party to come to him. While he wants unity, its not necessarily top of the line for himself gore forward. Going so far mentions paul ryan may have a problem being the Convention Chair if he refuses to endorse trump. I dont want to mention now, ill see after. I will give you a very solid answer if that happens about one minute after that happens. Okay . Theres no reason to give it now. Sounds like i know what the answer is, but you dont want to say it yet. You dont want youre you dont want to issue threats . Youre not going to issue a public threat. I dont think thats going to happen. And sarah palin actually going further saying she will support a primary challenge to paul ryan saying that paul ryans political career should be over, because he will not endorse donald trump. Something that looks fairly unlikely, given ryans approval in wisconsin but it is an interesting look, guys, at what is actually happening inside the Republican Party and goes beyond endorsements and tone or tenure, goes to policy. Pulling back saying taxes will likely go up for the wealthy, talking about changes to the minimum wage. Top issues that move completely away from where the Republican Party is and away from where paul ryan is as the speaker. A lot of issues paul ryan and donald trump have to hash out thursday. The types of issues that cant be figured out in one meeting, the start of a long conversation going forward. How to get the Republican Party back together. Chris . Phil, we remember the promises. I can unify, i can be president ial and i will if im the nominee. Both of those things not happening yet. Kind of the opposite from donald trump. Lets discuss these recent turns of event in the election with the man himself. Presumptive republican nominee, donald trump on the phone this morning. Mr. Trump, can you hear us . I can. We need to talk policy. We need to talk the state of play within your own party, but you have commanded a different headline that needs to be addressed. You are attacking Hillary Clinton for the sexual part and indiscretions of her husband, calling her an enabler. We have a panel of independent voters. They are smart as heck and most of them dont like it. They see it as a distraction, as hypocritical coming from you and mostly they see it as potential proof you may have no real ideas to offer as president. What your thinking on this line of attack . This is a nice way to start off the interview. First of all, you should congratulate me for having won the race. I thought you know, at least there would be a small congratulations, but im not surprised with cnn, because thats the way they treat trump. Its the, you know, they call it the Clinton Network and i believe that. So, you know wait. Hold on. Mr. Trump, i did congratulate you the last time we spoke. I said congratulations on winning the big race. Thank you very much. So warm and so wellfelt. Hold on. Get this off on the right foot. Im trying starting off with a question, we havent spoken, last week, towards the end, i was the, essentially the nominee of the party, and you start off with this question which is not surprising, because i understand cnn perhaps a lot better than you do. Okay, okay. Lets you know what . Sometimes its good to restart. Heres the restart. You are going to be your partys nominee because all accounts. You are going to carry the standard for this party. You have said once you get into the general, people will see what you have to offer. The first thing youve come out with hot and heavy out of the box are attacks on Hillary Clinton. That wasnt the first thing. The first thing i came out if you watched, trade. Were making horrible trade deals, losing your jobs, losing manufacturing. Its trade. The next thing i came out with is rebuilding our military, because our military is absolutely being decimated. Were not spending the proper money. Were not buying the proper equipment. Were not taking care of our soldiers. Were not taking care of our vets, by the way. Were not taking care of our military at a time when we just about in the history of our country need it the most. So i talk about that. I talk about the border. I talk about the fact that we have to stop the drugs from pouring into our country. Those are the things i talk about in a very long speech, in washington, actually nebraska, which was unbelieve every one of them had tens of thousands of people. I mean, there were massively, they were massively attended, of course you dont mention, nor does cnn ever show the crowds. Very interesting. I could be making a speech for an hour and they never show the extent of the crowd. I suggest that cnn shows your events more than any other candidates. Where Hillary Clinton said she want to put the coal miners out of business. We covered that extensively. On the military, you raise an important issue. We tried to get your campaign and the other campaigns to hold forth or whether or not they supported the current g. I. Bill. In congress, a sneaky vote in the house no roll call and going to cut money from the g. I. Bill to allow for other expenditures for vets. Vets were upset. No, dont take money from us and reallocate it. Find the savings elsewhere. Do you support maintaining the g. I. Bill the way it is and growing it instead of cutting it . I dont want to hurt our vets. We treat Illegal Immigrants better than our vets. Im going to help the vets s. That a yes . The vets are getting to much . Theyre not. Ive traveled, seen so many vets i know so many vets now and have a lot of friends. I have developed great friendships among the vets. Our vets are will you leave the current i want to bring jobs back to our country and make the country go again. I just traveled. I won so many states in a row in massive landslides and part of the reason was trade. Not what you brought up at the beginning of the show, totally inappropriate. Part of the reason i won was because of trade and i talk trade and im the only one that can do anything about trade. Im going to renegotiate these trade deals. These trade deals sucked everything out of our country. By the way, clinton is the one that approved nafta. Nafta is the worst deal, one of the worst deals our countrys ever made from an economic standpoint. One of the worst deals ever. Its taken if youve seen what its done to new york state and new england and virtually every state, but its just it is just, it has sucked the jobs out of our country, sucked the money out of our country. Were going to bring our jobs back. Were going to make it much harder for people to leave, for people to take their companies and just go to mexico and sell the product back into the United States with no tax or nothing. Lets unpack a little of this stuff one at a time. First of all, just to get back to tone for one second, a little bit of this is because youre on the phone. As you know when in person with somebody would you have asked the same question in person. Maybe if face to face, might be a little different. Thats all. You think you would have asked a different question . I dont think. So im playing off with the headline thats ofwhere. Not making it up, and nafta, i understand you wanted to bring up trade. You know, clinton did not pass nafta. Bush passed nafta. Really . Who signed nafta . You criticize all you want. Excuse me. Who signed nafta . Whose bill was it and who signed . Whats your point . One of the worst deals ever made in the history of our country, and destroyed manufacturing, and destroyed jobs. Thats a valid point. Spread the blame across both parties. And you have to come up with a solution. No. The signer of nafta, look at who signed it. Check it out. Bush xli. Okay. You take a look. You take a look. Nafta was a clinton deal and he wanted it so badly, and i have not been a big fan of what went on in terms, economic development, or with the war with bush either, frankly. If you want to know the truth. Theres a whole thats a whole other story. But if you look at nafta and look at whats been done and how hard clinton pushed it, and that bill has been an absolute disaster. The passage of that has been an absolute disaster for our country. All right. Fair point. You want to criticize nafta. Do more about trade, helping veterans. And get jobs back into the country and make it very hard for companies to leave and then sell product back into our country and rip us off. And all we end up getting is unemployment of great people. All real issues, as you know, the last time we spoke, when we did talk about your taking everybody out in the race and now being the man yourself. We talked about how you would bring about bringing back jobs. You said i would Tax Companies who dont do the right thing. Have a tariff imposed. Thats what congress does, not a president. You said, ill work with them. All real issues. Thats why i was so surprised to see you going after clinton for her husbands infidelity and calling her an enabling. Retribution for what she said. She is playing the womens card to the hilt. She is going i mean i watched over the weekend. Everything is about women and donald trump raised his voice. All nonsense. Women understand it better than anybody, and watch how well i do with women, when it counts. When the election comes. Watch how well. Because women want to see strong security, strong military, borders where people cant just come walking across the border like its swiss cheese, and you see the damage done to our country with the weak borders. You see whats happening. You see the crime. You see the drugs flowing in and poisoning our youth and everybody else. But then why dont you talk about those issues . I do and get women on your side as opposed to talking about infidelity. I do. A long onehour speech. Mr. Trump, its not one sentence. You were grandstanding on it, working the crowd about it. Chris, i spoke very little about that compared to other things. You took a small amount of the speech, and you build it up like its the biggest thing in the world, but it is a big thing. Look, he was the worst abuser of women. You just said im making too much of it and now you say its a big thing. Excuse me. He was impeached. Impeached and then lied about it. He said Nothing Happened with Monica Lewinsky and then he said, sorry, folks. Actually it did happen. And the guy was impeached for lying. All of that can be true. What does it have to do with hillary . She cant talk about me, because nobody respects women more than donald trump. And im going to take i will i will be better for women by a big factor than Hillary Clinton, who frankly, i dont even think will be good to women. You know, she went and she spoke very interesting. She spoke a few weeks ago, and she said, im going to put the miners and the companies out of business. Then she went to West Virginia and she tried to pretend she doesnt make the statement. And thats the way it is with her. You know . The lies, and the deception. Its horrible. And by the way, they understand her in West Virginia, and ill bet you that she loses West Virginia, when she was easily supposed to win, and i bet if you took a poll there now, myself compared to her youll see a big difference. But you watch the problems shell have. But the deception and lies and tried to pretend like she didnt mean it. Lets talk about something else. Sarah palin came out and said, paul ryan is done. Im calling on the supporters of donald trump to go after paul ryan and make sure that he gets cantered, as in eric canter. Loses his seat where he is. Do you want sarah palin going out there trying to purn people against paul ryan . Youre supposed to unify the party . Sarah palin endorsed me. I like her a lot, shes a terrific person do you want that . Let me finish what i wanted to say. Okay . I had nothing to do with that. Sarahs very much a free agent. Shes a terrific person but very much a free agent and i didnt know about this until yesterday. I guess shes been fighting or endorsing somebody running against paul ryan. And i didnt know about it until yesterday when i read about it. But this is a big deal. Paul ryan, the speaker there, you have said to this point, to give you your due, hey, i want ryan on my side. I want to work with him. Meet with him. I have always liked him. He called me not so long ago, a number of weeks ago, he was very supportive and nice. I thought everything was fine and then blindsided. Well see what happens. Chris, i think you know this better than anybody. The Republican Party, because of me, has received more votes than anytime in its history during these primaries. Right . Is that a correct statement . You are on track to have gotten s. That a correct statement. More votes than anybody in this primary. No, no, not talking about me. Because of me any gop primary ever youve gotten the most votes. Because of me you have the highest ratings of anybody during a cnn debate and fox set the alltime record for cable television. 24 million and 23 million. Most importantly from my standpoint, in the history of primaries, i, with many states left it will be this weekend, beat this weekend. Might all right be beat, ive received more votes than any person ever to run in the republican primary. So i have people that im representings theyre unbelievable people. Theyre loyal. Theyre smart. Theyre sharp. Theyre tired of being abused. Theyre tired of being lied to by people like Hillary Clinton, with the 3 00 in the morning and then never answered the call. Benghazi, all of the things, all of the emails. Its just its just a mess with her. So theyre tired of it. Theyre tired of not having increases in their wages for a period of 18 years, essentially making less money now in real wages than they made 18 years ago. And we have a group of people thats great. This group of people has given me and its them, its a group. Im like a messenger, but theyve given me a number that no other president , not ronald reagan, nobody, has ever gotten. Okay . And by the way, we have many states left. We have california, we have new jersey, we have many washington state. Where i was this weekend. I was in oregon, in nebraska, i was in West Virginia. They havent even been included in these numbers. Were going to blake reak it by millions and millions of votes. So i represent a very important and powerful group of people. These people have to be treated with respect, chris. Understood, but paul ryan said, im not ready to endorse yet. You know you have the big meeting coming. This weekend, you gave him pause for concern. It seemed as though you were saying this weekend two things that were different from what youve said in the past. One on taxes for the wealthy where you said you were open to taxing them more. As you mow, thats against the conservative i didnt say that, chris. Thats how its being reported. Nbc misrested and chuck todd, if they put out that clip, in fact i corrected him when he said it. What is it . Listen for a second. Please. Maybe somebody is listening to your show so we have actually have a there are millions watching. Let me set it straight. I put in the biggest tax decrease of anybody running for office by far. Okay . And many people think its great. And if anything i was criticized because its too steep a cut, but thats okay, but i put in by far the biggest tax what i said, and that really is a proposal, because we have to go to congress, have to go to the senate, go to our congressmen and women and we have to, you know, negotiate a deal. So if really is a proposal, but its a very steep proposal. I said that i may have to increase the section, and by the way, everybody across the board, businesses, everybodys, getting a tax cut, especially the middle class. And i said that i may have to increase it on the wealthy. Im not going to allow it to be increase and the middle class. Now if i increase it on the wealthy, theyre still going to pay less than now. Im not talking about increasing from this point. Im talking about increasing from my tax proposal. Key distinction. And chuck todd understood that totally and yet they released information like im looking to increase the taxes. They will be getting a reduction, but the big reduction is going to be for business and for the middle class, because the middle class is being decimated in our country. So it was totally misrepresented just now by you, and it was misrepresented frankly by nbc. Whoa, whoa. Hold on. And actually, chuck todd, when i corrected him on the show, and he put it on, and yet they go then and talk about it like im giving a tax increase for the wealthy. Im not. I said they may have to pay somewhat more than my proposal. I understand. But my proposal is much less than people are paying right now. You thaunds . I totally understand. But when something is reported a certain way and i ask you about it and give unthe opportunity to correct it, thats not being misrepresenting. Thats giving you the opportunity you want, which is to tell the audience what you say the truth is. Another one really misrepresented. The minimum wage . The buy back of debt. I said if we can buy back Government Debt as a discount. In other words, if Interest Rates go um and we can buy bonds back as a discount, if we are liquid enough as a country we should do that. In other words, we can buy back debt as a discount. People said i want to go and buy debt and default on debt and these people are crazy. This is the United States government. First of all, you never have to defwault becauault because you money. Never a default. It was reported in the New York Times incorrectly. You said creditors and make them make less. It was reported in the New York Times and other places that i want to default on debt. Im the king of debt. I understand debt probably better than anybody. I dont how to deal with debt very well. I love debt but its tricky and dangerous and have to be tacarel and know what youre doing. A chance to buy back debt as a discount, Interest Rates up, bonds down, buy debt. What im talking about. People had it, the times others wrote, trump wants to go and seek creditors and buy debt as a discount. Could be a time when somebody comes in, but with government, nerve every walk it, do me a favor, buy my dead as a discount. I bought mortgages back when the market went back, bought back at tremendous discounts. I like doing it. Gives moo e s me a great thrill. In the United States that wont happen. In theory the market doesnt go down so you default on debt. Thats what happened. The story, have it corrected. An opportunity where Interest Rates go up and you can buy back debt as a discount i like to do that, if you can do it. All i was talking about. They have it like im got bark to creditors, its ridiculous and they know its ridiculous but print it out wrong purposely. Your team has to go. You have a lot of interviews to do. You accept these opportunities and whats reported on the table from you and thats the opportunity theres so much misreporting. The press and unbelievably dishonest. Thats why we ask you to come on. And they know its wrong. You have a lightweight, a real, a real dope. You have a lightweight named Jennifer Ruben who spoke about, i didnt speak to rubio. I have spoken to rubio. Said i never spoke to ryan. Well, i have spoken to ryan, and either living in a time warp, if you watch her. There are going to be a lot of talking heads. Asking me and. What i offer is this some day youll put good people on about trump, one of these days. What i want is to have you on. Why i offer you these opportunities, not to be unfair, to be fair and give you a chance to explain what you say and be tested. Your team says youve got to get going. I appreciate the time on new day and want to talk to you, not about you. Thank you for being with us. Good. Thank you. Take care. Thank you very much. All right. You just watched chris interview with the presumptive jop nominee donald trump. Lets get reaction. Bring in David Gregory, cnn political analyst and host of the David Gregory show pod cast and cnn political director david chalian. Gentlemen, a lot to talk about. Donald trump has given us a lot of food for thought. David gregory, start with you about his tone. Right from the jump from chris first question, donald trump seemed annoyed that he had to talk about what me has been talking about on the trail, about bill clintons sexual past, and he said that the media is making too much of it. Go ahead. This is what donald trump does. Donald trump is an aggressive guy, hes going to lash out against the media. A favorite topic for him and his supporters. No doubt that chris twitter feed will be lit up by Trump Supporters who think these unfair. He wasnt unfair. In politics, things dont happen by accident. Donald trump made a decision that he is going to target Hillary Clinton on the issue of her husbands infidelity. Period. Knows what hes doing. He in particular knows what hes doing, hitting very, very hard and is going to be asked about it and he himself thinks its a big deal pap huge deficit with women, very unpopular with women, among others. Hell dealing with that and doubling down on a subject he knows, expert with the media will get a lot of traction. Two, a candidate who doesnt have fixed positions on issues. He himself, this is a quote, his words, says, hes flexible. That you have to be flexible. That is scaring a lot of conservatives in the party, and it is going to invite scrutiny, whether its taxes, whether it is trade, whether its the issue of debt or the minimum wage. Hes got to deal with that. He does a lot of interviews and hasnt got button down language what hes going to do. A couple quick takes an what we heard. I have no problem with him taking me and the media. It is what it is and im fine with it. I also like the opportunity to give him a chance to clarify things. I actually think thats the point, right . I actually think he said several things, david, that are very important. Hes right about where he was on tax policy, through his own articulation, maybe, but taken the wrong way, not as intended. He may have to boost how much tax the upper echelons pay within his proposal but not more than theyre paying now. Fair point. Interesting point of clarification. Fair point for him to criticize the media, if, in fact that should have been more clear from the start. Also now then on credit. My question to you. He did say, i think we can get them to take less than 100 cents on the dollar. Trump is a very sophisticated guy when it comes to finance. Look at the bankruptcies a lot of different ways. He knows how to use leverage. Is that something thats too subtle to sell to people and they should avoid it . I think it is a tough sell, because hes talking about the king of debt. How much he loves debt and, yes, to your point. He means in the world of business how he has mastered leverage and has been able to use it to his gain and to his success, but i think that is a very tough message to sell. Especially while youre trying to bring conservatives who may have questions about you on board, because its discordant from sort of the normal orthodoxy they hear and support in terms of policy positions, but, contribution ill tell you, in listening to you talk to him, what i think we saw today is a candidate in transition. We all know donald trump is a gut instinct candidate. This is not somebody who has mapped out a general Election Strategy and knows what message he wraunts to hit every single day. Hes far more instinctual than that, but i think you see someone who is trying to make that change from, from primary season victor to party nominee, and potential president , because when he locked in with you on nafta, on veterans, he knows hes in a wheelhouse of issues that work for him in this context. It worked in the primary but it likely will help him in the general election as well, if you look where the people are. And yet, and yet, he is still in that smaller world of the primary contest and the hourly fight that he hasnt fully shed yet shts and i think were watching a candidate in transition. David gregory, i thought there was a defining moment in the interview chris just had with trump that sort of captures what hes fighting for and the overarching message of his campaign that he will hit on. He talked about the people. Hes gotten more votes than any other. Ever. Gop candidate in the primary ever, and he said these are people, these are voters. Theyre smart, theyre sharp, theyre engaged, and he represents them. And paul ryan disregards them at his peril. These are people who believe in trump and they are sharp. You cant dismiss them, and if you sound like youre dismissing them, as some other candidates, you get in trouble. A very important point and a strong argument for him to make, because he has won all of these voters over. He has earned this place as the presumptive nominee, and i think hes in this contest of wills now with the establishment of the party, with the conservative wing of the party, and even as he sees it, you knowish the mainstream media, which is eager to report on and expose this rift between all sides of the Republican Party. And his argument is that he has a place and he has the leverage and deserves that leverage. That may prevail in his conversation with a paul ryan, but i think to davids point, that place of being in transition, i think he resents the fact hes got to work this hard at this point, but the reality, he still does. There are factions any nominee has to unite the party and he has not toiled in the vineyards of the Republican Party throughout his political career. You know, in and out of entertainment and flirting with politics. Thats going to be a big role for him. Hes got to get these voters out. My hunch is this is also a guy who understands that he needs a paul ryan. He may want to lash out at him in, you know, kind of in the press at the moment, but hes going to try to bring him over to his side. He wants that endorsement. He wants to work with him on an agenda because this is the heart of what trump is selling. He can negotiate and needs a negotiator with him. Even though, im sure im going to take it, as david suggested, nice heat protesting him. One, i think its good to get under his skin. It makes him perform differently and better. Ive argued that to him and his people many time. People in power need to be tested. Doesnt mean theyll like it but often brings out their best. I think him talking about nafta, trade, different policies, i think that he is not calling paul ryan out. I think were going to see throughout this week that this is going to be just fine. Oh, agree completely. What it means for the party i dont know. Between the two of them, just fine. Publicly, absolutely. The davids, thank you very much. Great to get your take on all this. John. Reddiwip. Share the joy. Hey, look, he was the worst abuser of women. He was impeached, and then he lied about it. He said, Nothing Happened with Monica Lewinsky and then he said, sorry, folks. It actually did happen. All right. Donald trump not letting up on his attacks against Hillary Clinton. Hes called her crooked in the past. He said she can only win playing the womens card and continuing his attack on hillary describing her as an enabler to her husbands infidelity. Joining us, paul begala and patty sorgous and this is like getting a root canal but here we go. So, paul will this have traction with voters, that trump is reviving these hes reviving these old accusations an bill clinton but in a different way. This time implicating Hillary Clinton and saying that she enabled it. Right. Its not going to work. Our audience should know, alisyn, i advise. I love hillary, a 25year friend and as vise the super pac, viewers need to know that. Not just speaking as a personal friend. Ive looked at this and went through this as you recall decades ago. It didnt work when current. Its not going to work decades later. If donald trump wants to join the legion of losers and weirdos who obsess about bill clintons sex life, ken starr, dennis h s hastert, it didnt work there its not going to work now. I wish him luck. But, patty, things have changes, and, in fact, women have changed since then, and we know that Hillary Clinton, that younger women, and younger female voters do not have the same allegiance to Hillary Clinton that some of her supporters did back when this was happening in the 90s. Do you think this is a new crop of people who will hear this the first time and it may affect them . I think as a many would, im a friend of Hillary Clintons, a longtime friend, but as a woman i think that blaming the wife for the infidelities of the husband is just wrong and ridiculous, and women are going to see that. But you know, just hitting on what paul said it didnt work back then and ill tell you why. Because when Hillary Clinton was attacked personally, which she focused on, her job. Thats what shes going to do now. Shes focusing on her job and right now her job is running for president. And that means talking to the American People about the issues that affect them. Whether thats health care, jobs, equal pay, affordable college. Family leave. Thats what shes talking about. And thats what people care about, and somebody must have told donald trump that thats what people care about, because he pulled way back this morning on the attacks he was given over the weekend. Interestingly, paul, donald trump has his own notorious sexual past. Selfdescribed, as notorious sexual history. Should Hillary Clinton go there, if necessary . No, no. Never. No. In fact, i give mr. Trump free advice. The best moment in the campaign when he brought his family on cnn. He has a terrific family and nobody should attack Donald Trumps personal life and that stuff should be out of bounds and it will be. Believe me. Its not where because, you know what . No matter which way this election goes, donald trump will be fine. Hes wealthy. Why the baway, Hillary Clinton going to be fine. Shes wealthy with a great family as well. Talking about the single mom, working two jobs to try to keep up with her rent, those are the people hillary is going after and trump at some point will figure that out, but nobody wants to attack anybodys personal life. Nobody with any sense or decency. That means trump is excluded from that list. Patty, you heard something that you predict signals . A change . You think that this is sort of the last gasp of this line of attack . Well, i mean, you guys heard it, and i was kind of dumbfounded that he went so strong over the weekend on the personal attacks and this morning what are you talking about . I didnt say that, or youre taking it way out of pro portion. Does that tell you somebody got to him . Exactly what it tells me. People who understand elections and understand running for the presidency know that you know, going into the gutter doesnt work. People want to hear about the issues that affect them, and whats going to make their lives better. So about the issuesish the long interview you just heard trump do with chris. Paul what jumped out at you . What do you think Hillary Clinton needs to fasten on . Taxes. Pattis right. Crawfish, we say in texas, crawfished back from the attacks where chris pressured him. Taxes, he seems to want to reposition himself on taxes which i find very interesting. The Budget Priorities and policy, bunch of geniuses, the think tank, big brains. They reviewed the trump tax plan and said that people who make over a Million Dollar as year will get a 20 tax cut. S 3ds trillion handed off to people who make a Million Dollars or more. Political untenable and economically disastrous. I dont know if youre able to redo your tax position on the fly but seemed to try do that in interview with chris. Paul, patti, great to talk to you. Thanks so much for being here. Over to chris. Another big issue in the news. North carolinas governor facing a looming deadline today. Will he follow through the justice departments demands to reverse the states law forcing bathroom use based on someones birth gender, or will he refuse and face the consequences . Next. Why do so many businesses rely on the Us Postal Service . Because when they ship with us, their business becomes our business. Thats why we make more ecommerce deliveries to homes than anyone else in the country. Here, there, everywhere. United states Postal Service priority you facing a big deadline today. 5 00 p. M. To comply with the justice reversal using bathrooms based on birth gender. Saying this proposal would violate civil rights protections. The state stands to lose billions of dollars in federal funding as a result potentially. Joining us now, North Carolina state representative dan bishop. The representative is the lead sponsor of the legislation known at house bill 2. First question to you, sir, first of all, thank you for being on new day to make the case. In light of the federal action. Good morning. And the letter, do you have thoughts about whether or not to change or rescind this bill . Well, its a very common sense and reasonable law. Its fully consistent with the civil rights law including title 7, including title 9, and its important to protect basic personal privacy rights of folk whose would use showers, public showers in bathrooms in North Carolina. I take that as no. Youre not going to reconsider it. What do you think the governors going to . Theres also been a possibility of tweaking something. The law is reasonable and im not in favor of rescinding it. What do you think the governors going to do . You know, governor mccrory has taken an unbelievable pounding. Hes been under siege and excellent throughout. Im confident that governor mccrory will continue to make good decisions. Its his call. Well see what happens today. You think its about how much time . I feel like you could make this decision in five seconds. Hes saying three days arent enough isnt enough time to deal with the issues involved here. Is this about how much time would respond or you think you know what the decision should be . Its an enormously difficult thing. This is what president obama meant when he said he had a pen and a phone. They have take an law that says, no discrimination based on sex. Theyve changed the meaning of sex, or purported today, without action of congress, and now they are, with unbelievable aggressiveness, demanding action where a governor should sregard a state law with five days, three Business Days notice. Its a remarkable aggressive approach by an Obama Administration that purported to the change the law and now wants to force that out and get acceptance through use of the courts across the United States, and theyre starting here, but this is now a national issue, and people across the nation need to be aware of that. A little bit of this, as you say, obviously, its complex. Its about law and culture. The federal government argues that this is a law like yours. The bill like yours is a reaction to the marriage, the marriage decision from the Supreme Court that this is a little bit of a pushback against the extension of rights to people from the lgbt community. How do you feel about that . Well, you know, chris, i wonder i would imagine that the bathrooms in your studios there are marked for men and women. If you go to a public shower facility or a locker room for a club or a health club, theyre separated by men and women. I dont think theres anything about the marriage debate that implied that we were going to eliminate separate showers, or force women, for example, to shower in the presence of a biological male. Thats what the issue is about. It didnt and we didnt raise it in the general assembly. The govern didnt raise it. It came up because of a radical ordinance charlotte passed, frankly if you read the text literally, eliminate all text distinctions in these private facilities. So weve restored that and thats what its about. The Obama Administrations attack is about at radical as it can be. They say its about you finding a way to discriminate geg transgender people, because it doesnt match up with your religious opinions. And because of needing discreet protections, a violation of federal laws. One judge found it should be extended already. Well, one judge found in title ix that there should be reinterpretation of law. In 1964 when title 7 was passed, in 1972 when title ix was passed, no voting senator understood that prohibiting discrimination based on sex meant that you were going to force people of opposite sex into the shower together. And so thats what i mean when i say theres a radical reinterpretation. And this is what theyve done is picked North Carolina in the waning days of the Obama Administration to attempt to force this issue rapidly so that then they can roll it out the rest of the nation. Theyre saying under title vii any employer who doesnt allow biological males into the womens restroom, where people have rights of personal privacy to be balanced and protected, that they should be rolled over by the Obama Justice department. I couldnt disagree more. Representative dan bishop, i appreciate you making the case on new day. This is not the end of this conversation in North Carolina and elsewhere. I welcome you back on the show. Thank you, sir. Take care. Donald trump and the Rolling Stones, not making music together. The band tells donald trump stop using their music at all. That song, music to any ears of any rock n roll fan, particularly the Rolling Stones, but theyre initiating their own stop trump music, asking him to stop playing their music at his events now. Just the latest of musician to that request of the trump campaign, or of many campaigns. Rich cohen, author of the new book the sun and the moon and the Rolling Stones. Great to have you with us. Great to be here. Every four years some rock n roll band gets pissed off that some politician is playing their music at their rallies. Traditionally, its a republican candidate. The artists seem to be more liberal. The Rolling Stones songs are such a mix of black and white and it comes out of the blues. And its sort of strange that they picked at one point, he was playing brown sugar. If you actually listen, its one of the nastiest pop songs in history, as if trump has no idea what its about. Because it goes so against everything hes seemingly saying, which is the Rolling Stones are all about everybody and trump is all about him, not him, her not her. Do you know what i mean . Drawing lines. To be mixed up with donald trump is bad and its one protest they could make. Mick jaggar, these guys engage in u. S. Politics at all . At one point jaggar was going to run for parliament. He was toying with that. That tells you where his politics are. Its not on the right. What might actually be on his ipod, mix of classic rock there. Its not bad. Right. That goes to the whole thing with trump. You feel like they took his ipod and plugged it in, and put it on shuffle. And whatever is playing thats whats on. Thats the auth enticity of it. He was called the chaos candidate. A guy like mitt romney, i dont believe hes sitting on his jet with his eyes close chilling out to kid rock. Other bands were upset that their music was being played. Kid rock actually wrote a song to play at mitt romney rallies, very, very interesting. Survivor in this campaign was mad or eye of the tiger, huckabee, i think was playing it. They were mad at that. Why do these rock n roll stars care . Is there money involved here . Theres not a lot of money involved. Most guys are allowed to play it. Most people wont blame the Rolling Stones for donald trump. Its seniority of like they have a feeling against donald trump, sort of the opposite of what they are. This is some way they can resist and protest it. To whatever extent it works it work. Donald trump can keep playing it. But the thing is its embarrassing. Its a like being at a party where a people dont want you. Ive been to a few of those. Lets talk about your book the sun, the moon and the Rolling Stones. You went on tour with the Rolling Stones at a weird time. Voodoo lounge, you were telling me . Right. Year 2000 . 1996. I grew up as a gigantic Rolling Stones fan. It was the music coming from my brothers room that i was not allowed into. They were grownups, older men. Whats it like being on the road with a band where they werent kids . My whole life i have been trying to get to the party, which i didnt know if it even existed and by the time i got to the party, everyone was old. Wearing reading glasses. Mick jaggar would disappear for a song while Keith Richards would play a song. We thought what is he do ing . Is he doing drugs to get his energy up . When i went on a break, he was Drinking Water and eating a power bar. How long do you think theyll do it . As long as theres one Rolling Stone left theyll be playing Rolling Stone songs. Their motto is like murdery waters, where they would sit and play in a chair. Keith richards said for you, because im younger, theres always been the sun, the moon and the Rolling Stones. Thats where the title comes from. Thats true. Its like the fermament. You koind of feel sympathy for trump in a way. Thats the music in the air and thats what you want to plug into. Hes trying to plug into it like everyone else. We need to have Keith Richards and donald trump in the same room and see how that goes. Thank you, rich cohen. Thank you. Were following a lot of news this morning. Lets get to it. I didnt get paul ryan. I was blindsided a little bit. I just dont believe that donald trump is a reliable conservative republican. Im allowed to change. You need flexibility. You have to listen to people that have chosen the nominee. This is called the Republican Party, not called the conservative party. Hillary hurt many women. Some of the statements he has made i find concerning. Shes married to a man who got impeached. He doesnt think much of women, it turns out. She is playing the womans card to the hilt. Watch how well i do with women. What do independent voters think of this election . Our panel weighs in. Im actually afraid of a donald Trump Presidency. Doesnt draw me to either of the candidates. Announcer this is new day with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. Jb and i over here, alisyn over here. Medias claims of misrepresentation of his positions so we give him an opportunity to tell you what he really means on issues that matter to you. Calling Hillary Clinton an enabler. Why he says what he says. Okay. Blasting trump for being reckless on Foreign Policy as trump ramps up attacks on her husband and what trump says was her role in his infidelity. Our panel, how will they respond to what trump has told thus morning . Lets begin with phil mattingly. Phil . A few days away from that meeting between donald trump and paul ryan, face to face behind closed doors and the tension is only escalating. Over the course of the weekend, donald trump underscoring he was taken aback by the announcement that paul ryan would not endorse him, at least up front, and actually issue aid threat as well, or at least seemed to. Saying he wouldnt endorse him. I dont want to mention now. I will see after. I will give you a very solid answer if that happens about one minute after that happens. Theres no reason to give it right now. It sounds like i know what the answer is, but you dont want to say it yet . You dont want to issue threats . Youre not going to issue a public threat. I dont think thats going to happen. And trump endorser and former Vice President ial candidate sarah palin taking it a step further saying she would go all out to support paul ryans challenger for his congressional seat. Paul ryan obviously in a very good position at his seat in wisconsin, 76 Approval Rating. Still the challenge, the attacks that are there, pushing the Republican Party even further away from the unity that donald trump pledged. Trumps position is simple. Ive won millions of votes. The Republican Party should come to me. Should make for an interesting meeting not just on the political side but policy side, donald trump continuing to raise questions, talking about his tax proposal, saying his proposal will have to be increased for the rich, the baseline numbers of that. And minimum wage, some sort of openness to an increase on that front. Politics, policy, even tone and tenor. Theres no question this is a huge meeting on thursday. The Republican Party still trying to get their head around the fact that their presumptive nominee doesnt necessarily track with everything they want or believe in. Cant always get what you want, to paraphrase the stone. Cant play that the a trump rally, though. Big problem. Trying to figure out how to meld the me into the we. That is the context of an interview this morning. Its going to be a very good day to be you. A look and listen to donald trump in a fullsome way. Not a good way to be me, because donald trump did not like the fact that i started the interview with why he is making so much about Hillary Clinton being an enabler. Why go that way . He said i have it all wrong, but then he talked about it. She is playing she is playing the womans card to the hilt. She is going i mean, i watched over the weekend everything is about woman and donald trump raised his voice and you know, its all nonsense. Women understand it better than anybody. Watch how well i do with women when it counts, when the election comes. Watch how well. They want to see strong military, borders where people cant just come walking across a border like its swiss cheese. You see the damage thats been done to our country with the weak borders. You see whats happening. You see the crime. You see the drugs flowing in, poisoning our youth and everybody else. Why dont you talk about those issues . I do. And get women on your side . I do. As opposed to infidelity. You took one sentence out of an hour long speech. Its not one sentence. Chris, i spoke very little about ta compared to other things. You took a small amount of the speech and you build it up like its the biggest thing in the world. It is a big thing. Look, he was the worst abuser of women. You just said im making too much of it. Now you say its a big thing. As a politician in the history of our country. He was impeached. He was impeached. He lied about it. He said Nothing Happened with Monica Lewinsky and then he said, sorry, folks, it actually did happen. And the guy was impeached for lying. All of that can be true. What does it have to do with hillary . She cant talk about me because nobody respects women more than donald trump. And im going to take i will be better for women by a big factor than Hillary Clinton, who frankly i dont even think will be good to women. You know, she went and she spoke it was very interesting. She spoke a few weeks ago and said im going to put the miners and the companies out of business. She went to West Virginia and tried to pretend she didnt make the statement. Thats the way it is with her. The lies and the deception. Its horrible. By the way, they understand her in West Virginia. And ill bet you that she loses West Virginia, when she was easily supposed to win. I would bet if you took a poll there now, myself compared to her, youll see a big difference. You watch the problems shell have. The deception and the lies. And she tried to pretend like she didnt mean it. Lets talk about something else. Sarah palin came out and said paul ryan is done. Im calling on the supporters of donald trump to go after paul ryan and make sure that he gets cantored, as in eric cantore, that he looses his seat where he is. Do you want that . Do you want sarah palin going out there and turning people against paul ryan . Sarah has endorsed me. I like her a lot. Shes a great person. Do you want her to do that . Let me finish what i want to say, okay . I have nothing to do with that. Sarah is very much a free agent. Shes a terrific person but very much a free agent. I didnt know about this until yesterday. I guess she has been fighting or endorsing somebody thats running against paul ryan. And i didnt know about it until yesterday when i read about it. But this is a big deal. Paul ryan, the speaker there. You have said, to this point, to give you your due, i want ryan on my side. I want to work with him. Ill go a step further. Ive always liked him. He called me not so long ago, a number of weeks ago. He called me. He was very supportive and nice. I thought everything was fine. Then i got blindsided. Well see. Ill see what happens. Chris, you know this better than anybody. The Republican Party, because of me, has received more votes than any time in its history during these primaries. Right . Is that a correct statement . You are on track to have gotten is that a correct statement . More votes than anybody in this primary. Im not even talking about me. Because of me any gop primary ever youve gotten the most vote. Because of me youve got the highest ratings in the history of cnn during a debate and fox set the alltime record, 24 million and 23 million. Okay. More importantly, most importantly from my standpoint, in the history of primaries, with many states left, it will be this weekend it might already be beat. Ive received more votes than any person ever to run in the republican primary. So i have people that im representing. Theyre unbelievable people. Theyre loyal. Theyre smart. Theyre sharp. Theyre tired of being abused. Theyre tired of being lied to by people like Hillary Clinton. All right. Lets talk more about our trump interview and the Republican Partys divide over their presumptive nominee. We want to bring in congressman mick mulv a. Ney and cofounder of the house of freedom caucus. He says he will support donald trump. Good morning, congressman. Good morning, alisyn. Thanks for having me. Great to have you. You will support donald trump because hes your partys presumptive nominee but youre not necessarily crazy about him as a candidate . I was a rand paul supporter during the primaries. When rand dropped out i didnt pick another candidate. Im more than happy to abide by what the republican primary voters have said. This year they said they want donald trump. Im fine with that and was hopeful that the whole party could rally behind trump faster than we. You say youre fine with it. Lets look at his positions and you can tell me if youre fine with those. Youre part of the freedom caucus, right . You all stand for limited government, lower taxes, limited entitlements. And donald trump has sort of given different messages, quite frankly, about those things. For instance, Social Security. He said that he does not want to change that. Let me play for you what he said about Social Security. They want to save their Social Security, which is under siege by everybody. Were going to save it, folks. And were not going to do cuts and all. Cruz, all these guys, they want to cut the hell out of it. Okay. Congressman, no cuts to Social Security. No modifications. Are you comfortable with that . Yeah. Actually, the conservative wing of the party doesnt stand for limiting entitlements. What were trying to do is make sure that the program stays healthy. For example, my 16yearold triplets. Were talking about slowly raising the retirement age from 65 to 67 over the course of a generation or so. Does donald trump stand for that . Thats what i dont know. When you play that clip thats all the details we have right now on Social Security. Im coming to it with an open mind. Here is where we are. Lets sit down with donald trump and see if there is any Common Ground between the conserve testify wing of the party and mr. Trump. Let focus on that instead of focusing on our differences. As a mother of twins, my hats off to you, as a father of triplets. You can forgive some journalists or voters for not knowing exactly where donald trump stands on taxes. Let me play for you what he said this weekend. You want taxes on the wealthy to go up or down . They will go up a little bit. And they may go up. But theyre going down in your plan. In my plan theyre going down but by the time its negotiated theyre going up. Is he for raising taxes or lowering tack ining taxes . Not clear from that clip. Weve not had a chance to sit down and talk policy with him. Were looking forward to that. Everybody is taxed enough already. Thats how we got into this movement in 2010 in the first place. If were looking for Common Ground, lets say we sit down with trump. Here is the deal. Huge middle class tax reduction. In order to do that, we may have to raise taxes on other folks. I dont agree with that but thats not the end of the world. You would be comfortable supporting the republican nominee if he had to raise taxes on the wealthy . If he can sit down and convince us that his tax reform plans, which i assume he has, will create Economic Growth for the largest number of american folks, i want to have those conversations. I happen to think that comes from lowering taxes on everybody. If he thinks not i need to sit down and talk with him. I cant des miss him out of hand just because i dont like what i read in an interview. Donald trump said this weekend that hes flexible on raising the minimum wage. Let me play it for you. Taxes too high, wages too high. Were not going to be able to compete against the world. I hate to say it, but we have to leave it the way it is. I havent decided in terms of numbers. I think people have to get more. Thats a change from where you were in the primaries. Im allowed to change. You need flexibility. Are you comfortable that he takes a flexible stance on things, such as whether or not to raise the minimum wage or keep it where it is . Ill fight him on the minimum wage. Im not willing to sit down to the folks who will lose their jobs if we raise the minimum wage. If you live in a state where you think thats important, you can raise the minimum wage in your state. Im not for raising the federal minimum wage. By the way, if donald trump is watching i hope he reaches out to the house of freedom caucus, and comes to meet with us after he meets with mr. Ryan on thursday. We would love to talk policy and not other he shalls. Im familiar with what youre alluding to. So, youre not comfortable with where he is on the minimum raise if he wants to raise it. Youre not sure where he stands on Social Security or taxes. So, how comfortable are you with endorsing him . A friend of mine in washington put it very, very well. He said he wasnt entirely comfortable with Donald Trumps willingness to do the right thing but he was absolutely comfortable with Hillary Clintons desire to do the wrong thing. So, its no longer the perfect candidate. Its no longer who you think is going to be the very, very best person but a duelistic choice. Donald trump or Hillary Clinton . For me thats an easy choice. Congressman, thank you so much for coming on new day to explain it to us. Thank you so much. To chris. Politicians, celebrities and billionaires all bracing for a big data dump today. Were entering a new phase here. The democrats have to figure out who their nominee is going to be. The republicans obviously have, it seems although well see what happens at the convention. What should we be looking at and why . If this is about clinton versus trump, what will the lens be that the American People look through to try to figure this all out . Lets talk to cnn political commentator carl bernstein, obviously a journalist of very high reputation for good reason and author of a woman in charge the life of Hillary Rodham clinton. Arguably, the definitive work on clinton to date. Mr. Bernstein us this morning, as always. Thank you. Were you able to take a listen or take a read of the interview with mr. Trump this morning . I watched it. I thought he was fairly incoherent through much of it. And it raises many questions, both about the candidate and the pres press. He says thats on me, that i came hot out of the box, i didnt congratulate him and focused only on a small part of what he said. He showed himself out to be the victim in this campaign, victim of you, victim of cnn, victim of the New York Times, victim of chuck todd. On and on and on and on. We have a new dynamic in this campaign. We have no idea where its going to go. And the driving die nynamic is candidates who are distrusted, disliked and even despised by a majority of the American People, according to almost every poll. This is the definitive starting point of this campaign. What the press does, and has not done so far, is to put these two candidates, or three or four, in context of their whole lives. Weve not seen a documentary on any network about the reality of Donald Trumps life, Hillary Clintons life, Bernie Sanders life, cruzs life. It is an egregious failure. Why is that . You have to ask the network executives. It should have been done in the primaries. I suspect it will be done in the post and New York Times as we move forward but the cable networks, old time three big networks need to start doing the same thing. We need to know about the lives of these candidates. We heard about lyin ted. What about lyin donald . You can call him in an interview like we just had but it doesnt stick. The object is to put his whole life in front of people in a coherent way so that they can make smart, independent judgments based on fact. Same with Hillary Clinton. We think shes the bestknown woman. She probably is. But they havent read my book or other books. We need to take whats in those books, her record as secretary of state and put them into real documentaries on television, on the web so people can get past these factoids. Trump seems to be making a bet based on what youre saying also. He talked a lot of policy this morning. He chooses to blame clinton exclusively for nafta. Bush 41 started that, wound up being that the clintons signed it. Hes using that as a policy specific attack about her past. He was also talking about hlry as an enabler. Yeah, bill clinton had the affair but do you know what she did . Do you think thats saleable . Depends on how its presented, both by trump and by the media. If theres context to it, i doubt that its terribly saleable in terms of hurting her any more than shes already been hurt by what the real record is. Look, she wants to turn this into a substantive campaign. If trump allows her to do that, she probably comes out of this a winner. If trump is allowed to be seen as benign rather than the neofascistic message he began his campaign with, about immigration, about mexicans, about mexican rapists, et cetera, et cetera. If he is allowed to take those the issues without looking at his character, his record, he could come out of this. The democrats have to show and the disaffected republicans that he is not benign, that he is dangerous, that weve never seen anybody throwing around the kind of ignorance about real policy, who has been a nominee of a party such as trump is doing. Then he becomes vulnerable. But right now, he has proved himself to be the master politician of our time. He has been successful with it in the primaries. Can he be successful in a general election, especially if the press does its job . Have you ever seen an election that starts out with the two biggest celebrities . Thats the whole point. The two biggest celebrities in the world and donald trump has tracked in celebrity culture in his whole life. Hillary is somewhat uncomfortable with it. If judgments are going to be made and the driving media is going to be drudged tmz social media rather than the regular mainstream and new stream press that does real reporting, trump is the beneficiary. He is a master of this. He has shown how good he is at it. He has made monkeys out of all of us. He has gotten more free air time for his rallies, among other things, than any candidate in history. Presumptive republican nominee defending his attacks on Hillary Clinton and her husband, and taking the media to task for misrepresenting his positions and he took issue with one chris cuomo. Imagine the termerity, sheer audacity of a journalist beginning an interview with a question. Watch. We need to talk policy. We need to talk the state of play within your own party. But you have commanded a different headline that needs to be addressed. You are attacking Hillary Clinton for the sexual past and indiscretions of her husband, calling her an enabler. We have a panel of independent voters. They are smart as heck and most of them dont like it. They see it as a distraction, hip critical, coming from you and as potential proof that you may have no real ideas to offer as president. What is your thinking on this line of attack . This is a nice way to start off the interview. First of all, you should congratulate me for having won the race. I thought, you know, at least there would be a small congratulations. But im not surprised with cnn because thats the way they treat trump. You know, they call at the Clinton Network. And i believe that. So, you know hold on. Hold on. Mr. Trump, i did congratulate you the last time we spoke. I said congratulations on winning the big race. Thank you so much. So warm and so well felt. No, no, no, no. Hold on. Lets get this off on the right foot. Youre starting off with a question. We havent spoken. Last week toward the end, i was essentially the nominee of the party. And you start off with this question, which is not surprising. Because its cnn. Perhaps a lot better than you do. You know what . Youre right. Sometimes its good to restart. Here is the restart. You are going to be your partys nominee by all accounts. You are going to carry the standard for this party. You have said once you get into the general, people will see what you have to offer. The first thing that youve come out with, hot and heavy out of the box, are these attacks on Hillary Clinton. That wasnt the first thing ive come out with. My first thing i came out with, if you watched, was trade. Were making horrible trade deals, losing our jobs, manufacturing. Its trade. The next thing i came out with is rebuilding our military. Because our military is absolutely being decimated. Were not spending the proper money, buying the proper equipment. Were not taking care of our soldiers or our vets, by the way. Were not taking care of our military, at the time when in the history of our country we need it the most. I talk about that. I talk about the border. I talk about the fact that we have to stop the drugs from pouring in to our country. Those are the things i talk about in a very long speech, in washington. Actually, nebraska, which was unbelieve every one of them had tens of thousands of people. I mean, they were massively attended of the which, of course, you dont mention. Nor does cnn show the crowds. I could be making a speech for an hour. Theyll never show the extent of the crowd. Mr. Trump, i would suggest that cnn shows your events more than they show any other candidates. We had a record crowd where Hillary Clinton said she wants to put the coal miners out of business, the miners. We covered that extensively. The miners and the companies to go out of business. We covered that extensively. That was quite an interview. What made you decide to go with the controversial move of asking him a question . Look. He felt it was an attacking question out of the box. When i enjoy about this is im getting crushed by his people, right . You do seem to be relishing this. But then i will defend what he does during the interview. Its not about me. Its about him. It is the difference that you show to this man as the candidate and presumptive nominee to test him. Im not going to you know, good for him that he won. Good for you, mr. Trump. You always treat him with respect. Whats interesting there is that he did not want to talk about what he was talking about this weekend. And it was stark from the beginning. It made me think either his family got to him, his Campaign Staff got to him. He wanted to be off Hillary Clinton and her husband, mostly and on to other issues. Two things. One, hes smart to do that. He tried it out. He sees what works, what doesnt. I have other irons in the fire. Thats good. Second, he plays to advantage every time hes on the phone. He knows he plays to advantage. Every time i have to stop him to get in a request question. Of course. Which would be easy to do like this, makes it sound like youre interrupting. Lets see how it moves going forward. Do you feel that your questions were answered . Sometimes. This is the thing on the phone. Hes not unique in that way. Many a politician sits in front of you. How far do you push it . Of course. How much do you do it . It will be interesting to see how he develop. I feel like you never congratulated me. I feel like thats unfair. Every time you win that fixed quiz show i say i see theyre still making you the pigeon. Were talking to a panel of independent voters this morning. What issues are important to them . Thank you for being here all morning. I know you listened very intently to Donald Trumps interview with us. Carrie, let me start with you. Hes not doing well with female voters at the moment. He says he will win them over. Do you think if he presses on national security, as he says there, that that will do it . The most decisive factor in this election will be independent voters and the issues we care about, the political process is broken. The rules of the game are broken. So when Bernie Sanders says its broken and donald trump says the process is broken, that speaks to you . Yes. You think that will be a driving force in how people vote . I think people are seeing that as important as the issues we all care about. We were all just talking in the green room. We might see issues differently. We all agree the process is broken. We need Structural Reforms that will open that up so all americans participate so we can have a National Conversation that includes everyone. Does that mean you want to vote for donald trump since he has been hitting that issue hard . Im waiting to see of our president ial candidates who will speak to to the independents, on our issues of political reform. Lets see some hands. Who felt that the trump interview was helpful this morning . Well, i have a in any sense, positive, negative. Let you knew something about him that you didnt know before . Gave you a deeper understanding, made you understand why he hates me right now . Any of it . You have the microphone. Here is the deal. You said out the gate youre coming after hillary. And thats not true. Since his win, he has had a couple rallies. And theyre about 45 to an hour long and he talks about a lot of Different Things and yet you always say or the media always say youre not talking about, you know, substance or policies. And he does. But then you pick that part. Lets stick to me. Absolutely, i did. Because he spent more than a couple lines on it. It was a big part of a big one of his groups. Maybe the biggest gathering. And its so different than what he said he wanted to do once he got to the general, which is that, hey, im going to blow you away with ideas. Im a unifier for my party. Then he goes after Something Like this. Its worth asking about. Isnt it . Its worth asking about. But thats what you started an interview with. You cant then blame him for being the one that lays into the press on these Different Things. You started the interview with that. Look, he is not a slick talking, professional, always rehearsed politician. He is very new to this. So, that is what drew people to him. Because hes not those things that you want him to be or that he answers a question exactly like you want him to. It always seems like the press is after gotcha questions with him. Gotcha question is why are you calling her an enabler of her husbands infidelity . But you say you want substance, you want him to talk about more. He did in those rallies. You pick that part. But doesnt that matter . It depends. If youre going to play it all day long. It matters to you and you like what hes saying. To make it matter. You said earlier, does it matter to you, you said yes. It does matter. All right. But it matters in the way of if shes going to play a woman card then im going to bring up your stuff. Thats what it matters. Nick, what issues are most important to you . And did you hear him address those . The most important issue im facing right now is education reform. That is the Biggest Issue i feel growing in the United States right now. Meaning tuition is too expensive . Not even that. Starting at elementary and high school levels. We live in such a standardized testing era that our students arent growing up to be the best business leaders. Or the next ceo. The reason thats not happening is because of common core and no child left behind. We need to get rid of standardized testing and when they get to college a lot of these students are taking remedial classes because theyre not learning the substance in high school. Okay. Ian, what are the issues you would like to hear the candidates discuss . I think income inequality is the main thing right now. Which why youve been attracted to listening to what Bernie Sanders has said . Bernie. He is the only person who has a demonstrative record of a commitment to transforming the status quo. If bernie does not make it to the finish line, then how do you feel about having to support Hillary Clinton or donald trump . We have a lot of time between now and november. A lot can happen in six months in this country during this era. I would like to see what happens. I would like to see what happens in terms of independent voters, at both national conventions. I am hoping we will not end up with the inevitable outcome that people have been claiming. I hope that both parties will do something smart in terms of opening up the field and really responding to what the American People are saying about change. Meaning like a Third Party Candidate or who is open to that, a third party . All of you independents are open to a Third Party Candidate coming in . Even at this point now, at the convention or theres some honestly, i dont know how possible it is, by the way. Getting on ballots in all 50 states is not easy. It takes organization, money and time, quite frankly. Would you be open as independents to more people entering this race at this point . Absolutely. Show of hands. Really . And it goes back to the rules of the game. Independents dont get included in the president ial debates. You cant get on the ballot at this point. Independents have to get 30 times the signatures as democrats and republicans. Our game is rigged. Thats why everyone was voting for sanders and trump. One reason. And as he said we need parties to respond to the American People. We hear your frustration. You lean toward hillary. How are you feeling . I lean toward hillary. A third candidate as much as we would like to see it, is very unlikely. To get on National Debates you need 15 in polling. Thats going to be very hard for somebody with not enough name recognition. Second of all, would have to hop on the libertarian and Constitution Party lines in order to get to that ability and those two parties dont have Ballot Access in each state. Damon, what issues are you listening for . Right now with the two candidates going forward, trump and Hillary Clinton, of the two you have trump, who could isolate america. Thats not what we want. Like bush did. So, for Foreign Policy reasons i would go with hillary. Thats an important matter. We only have 15 seconds. What have you heard today and what issue is most important to you . For me it does matter what ideologic and social issues, once elected they have no chance of enacting their agenda. We need Structural Reforms like nonparty redistricting, things that change the way nominees get elected so they can change the way they govern. Panel thank you for being with us on new day.
