Secretary clinton, youre not in the white house yet. A civil but contentious night for Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Side by side is on stage since the commanding New Hampshire victory up ended the primary fight. Again and again, clinton tried making one thing fair. She is the rightful heir to president obama. Today senator sanders said president obama failed the leadership test. This is not the first time he has criticized president obama. He has called him weak. He has called him a disappointment. It was a message for the voters of South Carolina, they are widely africanamerican. I do not expect for someone running for the democratic nomination to succeed president obama. Madam secretary, that is a low blow. The last time i heard a United States senator had the right to disagree with the president , including a president who has done such an extraordinary job. Bun of us ran against barack obama. I was not that candidate. Sanders had the final word. But it opened a new chapter. It exposed deeper lines in their policy and political differences on Health Care Reform clinton presented herself as the keeper of the legacy. Before it was called obama care, it was called hillary care. Senator sanders said Race Relations would be better in his administration. We will create millions of jobs for low income kids so theyre not hanging out on street corner. Clinton tied herself to obama and rejected the suggestion she would be swayed by campaign donations. Lets not in any way imply here that president obama or myself would not take on any vested interest, whether its wall street, Drug Companies, Insurance Companies or frankly the gun lobby. Lets not insult the intelligence of the people. People are not dumb. Why does wall street make Huge Campaign contributions . I guess just for the fun of it. They want to throw many around. Im not asking people to support me because im a woman. I ask people to support me because i think i am the most experienced person to be the commander in chief. These candidates go to nevada and then to South Carolina. If you came into this debate a Bernie Sanders fan, you left a Bernie Sanders fan. Vice versa for the clinton camp. From a historical point of view, somebody with my background, somebody with my views, somebody who has spent his entire life taking on the big money interests, i think a victory would be of some historical accomplishment as well. Im not sure it worked for her. She kind of shot them a look. They did not respond to that. The problem is the challenge for the Clinton Campaign is women voters. Why are so many women voters, including young women voters, siding with his campaign, his candidacy . That is something she knows she needs to work on and be address. He would be the first jewish president. She is not able to translate the history of that into votes Going Forward. He would be the first democratic socialist, the first jewish president. I think now that they are punching harder at him donald trump is saying, hey, you want me to just not respond . I think this is for the socalled establishment candidates hoping to get a shot at a being the candidate to take on donald trump. They have to go through cruz. This is shaping up as a trump cruz race. The two of them going back and forth. Really it would have helped a lot of other candidates if trump indeed decided to run a bunch of ads and get into it in a fierce way. The reality is it helps both of them at the top to move on and let the establishment lane candidates finish each other off. So big day for john kasich yesterday. He does well. Im doing well. Hillary clinton made the point last night. Shes been making it for a few points on the campaign trail now she has a much longer history than Bernie Sanders. Is it fair to say Bernie Sanders hasnt been fighting for these same things . I think thats one of the smaller issues that people are delving into. The larger issue, we saw this last night, Bernie Sanders has a barack obama problem. Whether or not it was in 2011 where he attempted to primary the president or whether or not he understands this campaign is about building on and strengthening the legacy of barack obama, especially here for the tkraic vo democratic vo South Carolina. It is about who is in a better position to build on and protect that legacy moving forward. Senator sanders called that a low blow. He had, hey, im not the one who ran against barack obama in 2008. He is saying Hillary Clinton is now wrapping herself in the cloak of Barack Obamas record, but she hasnt always done that. No, she hasnt always done that. But i think Hillary Clinton made an amazing pivot when she said, look, we had a contentious debate, even after her 2002 vote on the iraq war. Who did barack obama trust to be the secretary of state . She said, look, Bernie Sanders, in 2011, you were still trying to primary the president. Not only that, signing off on a book, talking about barack obama being a disappointment is simply something not going to play well here. We had a lot of layered discussion last night in the debate. One of the things that struck me, Bernie Sanders swung and miss when talking about race. The fact of the matter is, the economic measures, new economic measures, fighting in equality will not solve our race problem here in the country. For someone to believe all of a sudden it will get better under Bernie Sanders is deillusional. You have to be he is more transformational than barack obama and i dont believe that. Listen to this. When we have more people in jail disproportionately africanamerican and latino, heres my promise at the end of my first term as president we will not have more people in jail than any other country. We will invest in education and jobs for our kids not incarceration and more jails. Whats wrong with that promise, bakari . I think its a great promise. But i can also promise you that i am going to be a professional basketball player in three or four years. The question is how . How do we make that a reality. Africanamericans, especially in sbg is sbg and throughout the country for that matter, are disproportionately incarcerated. We know we have systemic racism in our criminal justice system. How do we root that out . Are we going to talk about patterning our criminal justice plans after the Ferguson Commission on 21st Century Policing reform . Thats something i want to see done. Thats something hillary mentioned last night. Are we going to talk about mandatory minimums . The question is how. I think its a lofty goal. I love the way senator sanders has us dreaming. I absolutely do. But the difference is we have to dream with our eyes open. We have to have con can realities and solutions to get there. Cracial tension has not been quelled. Hillary clinton making the point that barack obama has made all of these accomplishments. We had a lower unemployment rate. 14 million insured. Little black boys and black girls who can touch their hair and realize they have the same type hair that the president of the United States has so they too can have those dreams. I do think we have to build on and protect the legacy and all the accomplishments he has put in place. Im under no illusion that barack obama or Bernie Sanders are a new messiah that will take us to a new place. Judgment matters as well. And she and i worked at the same evidence coming from the Bush Administration regarding iraq. I led the opposition against it. She voted for it. You come at this for a really interesting perspective, general. You were in the military. You advised against the invasion. Then you had to fight as part of the in vacation and occupation. Bernie were sanders said he voted against it. Do you think he deserves the credit . Is that the kind of stand you think resonates with vote issers and should . Well, he has shared with us what caused that judgment. Because he didnt see something in the intelligence . Was it because of force . Was it because of the amount of money he perceived we would spent, the turmoil it would cause in the region. He said, yeah, it was my judgment that prevented me from doing it but doesnt say why. I was disappointed in both candidates. We expected what we got from secretary clinton. But senator sanders always relisis on that answer as, hey, my judgment 14 years ago and one vote is what you should rely on. Well, theres been other judgments he has made. In fact, i mentioned last night that in 2012 we were trying to maintain forces in europe to counter a threat that we perceived was expanding not only the russians but also a terrorist threat. We were testifying quite a bit in congress. There was an exchange between senator sanders and secretary panetta that showed his judgment wasnt so good. He had the wrong facts about what was in europe. Im concerned still trying to remain apolitical on all of them. And i havent seen yet that give me the strength other than secretary clintons experience. Even that is tainted. You talk about her experience. Do you think she has explained her iraq war vote. You were there. You look at the same information she did. She voted for it. You argued against it. I was a baby general. I was a brandnew one star at the pentagon. I was saying things based auto training, experience, what we thought we would need in terms of a Civil Affairs forces afterwards, how it would affect the strategy and the rest of the world. What it might do in that area. My arguing against it in a very quiet way was pointed towards the readiness to do the things we thought we needed to do. From a political standpoint, strategy standpoint, you need a lot more than that. Im not sure the votes at the time were based on what was presented as intelligence. Hillary clinton from the very beginning during her younger days as a lawyer, Childrens Defense Fund work to go deal with the Prison Industrial Complex and make sure teenagers werent being incarcerated with adults. Bernie sanders has done a good job of articulating a whole host of issues important to america and made a meaningful contribution to the debate. I have a great amount of respect for senator sanders. But the question we all must confront who is best able not to articulate issues of importance but step into the job on day one of the presidency and help translate these inside into action. The notion of revolutionary change is very attractive particularly to young people. I understand that and respect that. When you look at senator sanderss time in office. He was a mayor for 8 years, 16 years in the house of representatives, 10th year in the United States senate. That is 34 years of Public Service and there is no evidence of revolutionary change. I have decided and many of my colleagues have concluded that Hillary Clinton has the capacity to translate these big ideas into action based on track record. That is what the American People need and deserve. Last night there was a moment that got a lot of attention during the debate. That is when Bernie Sanders said he would be a better president for Race Relations. Listen to this moment sad isly, in america today, a whole lot of those poor people are africanamerican. If my reading of history and the facts of whats going on around the world is true. New york is experiencing enormous problems. It is something we have to be concerned about. People love the country. They knew it was hard to build. You cant just turn things around overnight. Imagine how crazy that is and how quickly this has happened. The oil crash. From 100 a barrel down to the 20s. Im sure people have been making money all along the way and speculators pushing on the gas, pun intended. But when it turns out, if it turns out, it could be just as volatile. To come full circle here, this is what we wanted. We wanted to rely on domestic production. So what is the answer in terms of the in stability . The instability is mostly financial. When oil was expensive, over 100, Oil Companies were able to borrow money from banks, leverage loans and these great technologies like fracking. Now they cant repay the loans. Now here in the u. S. , we have very real issues of bank stability. It starts being that whiff of 2008. So we have to get through the financial aspects of this. Thats capitalism. That all takes time. Two or three years from now, oil will be trading permanently, under 20. We will never run out of oil. Thats the great thing about fracking. Theres shale everywhere. But thats not the issue. What hes done actually is say, that the president has not been a good leader. He hasnt disagreed with him on policy. Hes disagreed with him on a lot of style and biggerpicture issueshasnt been a good leader. Says hed be better on Race Relations than president obama. Pretty big divides that he himself created. First of all, the Race Relations, that question asked, some africanamericans, i recall, the way the question was asked, some africanamericans even said theyve been disappointed in president obama. So how is surrounding yourself in president obama, how does that make the case for Hillary Clinton about what shell do for the future . Bernie sanders talks a lot about the future. Isnt this inherently backwards looking by Hillary Clinton . Well, theres two pieces here. The first is, shes sending a signal that the accomplishments of the bvObama Administration, things like passing Health Care Reform, doing banking reform, that theres work to do, and that thats going to be her approach. What sanders is trying to sell, and more power to him, is those things havent dont have the impact we need. We need to start over, start fresh, and think bigger. So what shes embracing, really, is, not just the past of president obama, but shes trying to convince people that she has the level of experience, thoughtfulness and legislative strategy to actually get things done. Whereas, sanders, in my view, is really good at explaining the problems. I think hes much better at talking about the problems in this country and shes actually much better at talking about the solutions. Maybe if the rehetoric joined wed be in a United Democratic party. One more minute, remiss if we didnt talk about Henry Kissinger in the 2016 president ial race. Explain the Henry Kissinger moment for me. Hillary clinton likes Henry Kissinger, has talked to him. Bernie sanders has strongly supported the president but differences on policies. Trade policies. Bernie opposed not just the Transpacific Partnership trade agreement. Bernie sanders believe they are written by corporate america, lose american jobs, shut down factory across the country and have disagreements on policies. As to supporting the president as suggested by hillary that bernies been opposed to the president and worked against him, thats simply not true. You do not even think the question who would do more to continue the obama legacy, you dont think thats what this election is about . No. What we think the election is about is dealing with the problem holding back the middle class and destroying the middle class of america for decades. Which is the fact that this economy is rigged. The Economic System in america is making a few people extremely wealthy, and its causing millions of people to fall behind. Bernie sanders offered a series of proposals. Whether its universal College Education, health care for all. Massive investment in infrastructure to create 13 million jobs that will revitalize our economy and rebuild the middle class. Its just a different set of policies. The only reason he can make such an ambitious agenda available to the American People is because barack obama has cleaned up the mess of the last republican administration. Hillary clinton won the endorsement of the political black caucus and a member of congress, john lewis, civil rights icon, who spoke and talked about Bernie Sanders and Bernie Sanders connection, perhaps, to the civil rights, in stark language. Listen to what the congressman said. I never saw him. I never met him. Im a chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for three years, from 1963 to 1966. I was involved in the sitins, the freedom ride, the march on washington, the march from selma to montgomery, and directed the Voter Education project for six years. But i met Hillary Clinton. I met president clinton. Whats your reaction to that . Thats a pretty blunt statement from a guy who has got serious credentials in the civil rights community, says of Bernie Sanders, i never met him but i did meet bill clinton and Hillary Clinton . My reaction is that john lewis is a hero, in the civil rights movement, and im not surprised that Bernie Sanders and he did not meet. Bernie sanders was very active in the congress for racial quality at the university of chicago. He led sitins there. Arrested protesting the housing policy of his own university. He came to washington when dr. King was there. Yes, they didnt meet, but i dont think that in any way diminishes the effort of Bernie Sanders and hundreds of thousands of other young people who participated in the civil rights movements in the 60s didnt meet but bernies life and direction of hit life and commit was shaped during those college years. Were very proud of bernies record, not just as a College Student but everything he did in this political dreier advance the cause of civil rights and equal rights. Was it a fair comment from congressman lewis . A cheap shot . Listen, im not going i think congressman lewis has the right to say whatever he wants. Hes earned that. I think Bernie Sanders is someone whos also earned a place in the struggle for equality in america. Ands policies hes advances to promote Racial Justice in america i think are on the cutting edge of the fight. Hes made it very clear of that. And as a result weve earned support from a lot of people including erica garner, the daughter of eric garner, murdered. A lot of people, harry belafonte, danny glover. A number of people wellknown in the Africanamerican Community. Great people, state representatives in South Carolina who endorsed him. Listen, job lewis has a right to express his opinions, hes earned that, but Bernie Sanders has also, i think, very strong views to move the cause of equality forward in america. I think they want it in South Carolina because South Carolina has a variety of constituencies, tea party, evangelical, retiree. A military constituency. As i look at it, w. And ted cruz wouldnt want it in South Carolina and donald trump is already talking about what hes going to do after george w. Bush gets out there for jeb. Listen to what donald trump is saying about w. Lately. Now hes bringing in his brother. I wont say anything. Im going to save that for after his brother makes a statement, because theres plenty to say what happened especially that last three months. I dont want jeb bush to say, my brother kept us safe, because september 11th was one of the worst days in the history of this country. You know it could be a winwin for both people. It could be a win for donald trump, because it gives him something to beat up on and could be a win for jeb bush and a lot of it depend, michael, on what george w. Bush we see. We just dont know whos going to come out monday night. And he hasnt been out on the trail for a while. I remember the whole Bernie Hillary thing. Bernie really doesnt pose a threat to her but she needs a tuneup. Is w. In fighting shape to play politics in South Carolina . To your initial point does it benefit trump at the same time, it probably does, because there are two primaries within the republican gop primary in South Carolina. Theres cruz, and theres the donald. I really think that ben carson is a nonentity at this stage and the three establishment candidates. And a trump falter does not necessarily benefit one of the establishment candidates. It dbenefits cruz. Im constantly an vidsing whats going on in the stage and looking at it in distinctly opposite lanes. In tomorrow nights debate who should we keep an eye on . Rubio . John kasich . Jeb bush . A lot of people have changed their personality a little since the last one . Chatting with bob beckel in the green room about this issue. Rubio, the debate is, is he done . Whats the extent of the damage here . Because i think theres going to be such a microscopic analysis of everything that he says, scrutinizing of the transcripts. Its probably unfair to him, at some stage, but if he rebates something, well, there he goes again. Its going to follow him. That issue. It will, but he up until last saturday, he was seen as such a great debater. You would think he can go out there and ive heard from an increasing number of radio callers recently that they admire his familys story, but now theyre at the point of saying, weve heard it too many times and what does it real to do with his credentials to be president . Makes you feel good about being an american. Right . The whole horatio bootstrap thing, but what really does it say about his fitness for office . Not much. Talk about john kasich. Hes siphoned off a big donor from chris christie. So ken langone, found every of home depot endorsing john kasich, big deal . Not big deal . I dont know if hes known for writing big checks but known for helping other doernnors. Would rather have him than not. Kasich came out of New Hampshire with what bush would have called big mo. This parenthood issue, playing out with him this week in defunding them, all of a sudden that will rattle the cage of independents and moderates who think, kasich could be one of us. That will play, the fact hes fighting planned parenthood helping . In the shortterm in South Carolina. Looking for to illinois, michigan, ohio, eventually pennsylvania, all states i know hes got lined up in that win column, im not sure how it plays there. Also gives him confidence. He knows hes going to stick around a long time and funded theoretically a long time now. Do you think jeb bush and marco rubio look at them on that debate stage and say, an easy target in South Carolina. Lets score some points . They look at him and try and go after him. I beg to disagree hes an easy target. Im a sucker for the type of pitch that he is making. That my cards are on the table. I find that that compassionate conservatism plays and that his tone distinguishes himself from the rest of that pack. This is a guy who can win a general election. If practicality, who could win the white house against hillary or bernie, hes the one. The charge against him, the kind of republican liberals like or the kind moderates like in your case, not the kind of republican that conservatives like . Hes got issues, you know, with the angry talk community. Theres no doubt about that. Hes a republican who has governed as a conservative and hes from ohio. What more do you need to know . To try to get into South Carolina in two weeks and introduce yourself to the black community, i think it will do better than people think hell do. The problem is, of course, young people, particularly among young africanamericans dont vote that much. Give sanders credit. Imagine just think about this. We have two, close frontrunners. Bernie sanders and donald trump . Ive been in politics 33 years. This is the strangest ive seen. Talking about strange. A strange bump in the road on the way to South Carolina, the state of nevada. The nevada caucuses, a weird animal, bob, in politics. They are. First of all, a caucus, a relatively new thing. No one really knows how to run there successfully. Talking to people and the ground, look, bernie may not be ale to win but is making inroads. He is going to be able to compete in nevada. Hes got a much better opportunity to, to break into the Hispanic Community than he would in the black community, for example. They are relatively a new voting block. Growing in huge numbers. And bernie is has been pretty good with hispanic voters, but, you know, the fact is, that the republicans, i cant believe it, but they continue to dish up this vote to the democrats. Hispanic ought to be george bush got 44 because they are military oriented, family oriented, all things voters talk about and now calling them wetbacks and drive them away. Bernies got an opportunity there, sure, and also got some help with labor. Some of the the Smaller Labor unions will help him. Caucuses are strange things and clinton didnt do a good job with caucuses in 98. Maybe theyve learned their lesson. Lets talk about white people. Talk about white people. There seem to be so much addressing of the Africanamerican Community. So is it important to talk about the White Community in South Carolina or nevada . Or are they less of a factor . No. I think, where is this rage coming from . If you look at it, its mostly among working class whites and their families. And so im a little surprised, frankly, that Hillary Clinton did not adapt herself to that very well. Bern hi it from the beginning. But, you know you dont think shes tapping into the anger people are feeling . Not harnessed . She is not a soaring rhetoric candidate. Shes a good candidate, but, you know, her husband was the one who could do that in the family, and bern lay got this young people thing is phenomenal. I was up in New Hampshire and iowa, both, and hell continue to have that, and the other thing is, theyre turning out. Normally millennials, who really will hold the balance of, in the next three decades of american politic, the millennials, a large generation in history, who are breaking for bernie big time now, and turning out. Which surprised me. How does she make inroads then . Talking about working class whites, i think what you talked about before, a distinct thing from young people. How does she make inroads with working class whites . A tough one. Can you do it rhetorically. Stand there and emphasize with them and understand them very well, empathize, but im not sure shes suited for that. People talk her being hard edged and dont trust her. Ever since shes been in public life shes been under attack, under attack. They gets to a very defensive point and not somebody one moment talking about some woman last night in the that debate, quite moving to me, but the other thing about hillary, shes a much better comefrombehind candidate. Joining us now to discuss is charles blow, cnn political commentator who wrote an interesting piece recently called stop bernie splaining to black voters. Let me ask you, explain what that means . Blowplain us. Absolutely right. Bernie is a great advocator fo e himself, but people who support him have a really hard time unding why other people dont, and that can quickly dissolve into condensation in some cases. That hurts bernie the candidate more than if you were not to do that and to respect the fact that people come to their political knowledge collectively with histories and sensibilities and cultural sensibilities. Theyre simply differ and its not about that hes a bad candidate that they may not support him, just that theres a different history and maybe you know, bernie may be idealistic. A lot of black people have adopted a kind of functional pragmatism, having been disappointed by both parties for a very long time, that it is a very pragmatic sensibility that they bring to the voting booth and that may not necessarily always align with bernies idealism. You think Bernie Sanders supporters are talking down to black voters . Not all. Some . There are some. Can you give an example . What does that sound like . For me it sounds like, i get a lot of kind of this on social media. For me it sounds like, well, once black voters are more educated about who he is and about what hes done and about what and im thinking, this idea that you feel like you have to educate them, that they are not necessarily politically savvy enough, that there is not enough kind of Institutional Knowledge in the black community to be able to understand when something sounds too good to be true, that is a condescension on to stechl aitself and you have that is there a similar ko condescension in Hillary Clintons campaign. And they should be with Hillary Clinton now because barack obama is the first black president. A problem to set it up as an either or. Most voters dont look at it that way. A lot of Clintons Campaign is threatening to black voters. It is more an issue, which of these people is, is offering something that i think is more realistic and will not hurt me . But will, in fact, help my situation or help me maintain what i now have . I think it is a very practical decision that people bring in general. Trying not to generalize too much, but kind of the question, but in general, bring it to that voting booth. Do you think that Hillary Clintons embrace of barack obama as weve heard her do more so in the past week, is too late . Is it whats the timing, to you . I dont necessarily think its too late. I do believe that clintons have built a tremendous number of relationships in the black community over a long period of time. That does not negate all the negatives that the clintons bring to the black community and that has to be always stated, including that horrific crime bill that bill clinton but people are weighing that, and theres a familiarity with the clintons that does not exist with Bernie Sanders. Hes been in the northeast his entire career. Hes been in d. C. , but hes from vermont. Those relationships simply do not exist. They lived in arkansas. There are a lot of southern relationships built over a very long time, and the south is still where most black people live. Changing subjects here, charles. You also talked a lot about the oscars and the whiteout at the oscars. Meryl streep made a comment. At the berlin film festival. She says, ive played a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures. There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture and after all, were all from africa retchly. B recently. Berliners, were all africans, really. Responding to the tshirts they wore. What did those say . Something about like i forget what the it was kind of racially insensitive. I forget what the actual thing was on the tshirt, but this is kind of a convenient excuse. Responding with that, what was on the tshirt at this festival and trying to deflect it. Now it is true that originally we are all african, but we are not simply going to skip over that whole white sue prsue presentee. Reporter San Bernardino Police Officer nicklaus kawau took a bullet to the leg. Ive seen footage of the officers running up to my vehicle with bullets flying by them, running up to get in and help. Unbelievable. Reporter the two terrorists who murdered 14 incident people in San Bernardino died in the fiveminute shootout. When it was over, the sergeant realized, no cop had died that day.
