Start his own party called the trump party . And a lot of serious issues well deal with. How will World Leaders respond to the growing threats from isis . Plus terror fears reigniting the battle over gun control here at home. Will congress and the president act on that it divisive issue. What about your Financial Health ask we want to talk about that. The resolution we all should be considering. That and so much more ahead. First, though, lets check your headlines at the newsdesk. Good morning, everybody. Im fredricka whitfield. 2016, many celebrations including the big one in new york city. [ cheers ] more than a Million People packing into times square to celebrate. Security was tight. More than 6,000 nypd officers on hand after new york, los angeles and washington were targeted by a Terror Threat. Intense security also greeting the thousands who jammed into Central London for a spectacular fireworks display there. And federal agents spoiling an alleged new years eve terror plot in upstate new york. The suspect, 25 yard emanuel ledgeman now in custody. Authorities say he planned to target revelers at a rochester bar and restaurant in the name of isis. Officials say he wanted to sneak a bomb into the restaurant then kidnap and kill some of the customers. Following the arrest, the city cancelled the new years fireworks show. An intense and frightening new years eve in dubai. A spectacular fire at a luxury Highrise Hotel keeping firefighters busy deep into the night while just three blocks away revelers were taking in the Worlds Largest fireworks show. Lets bring in Cnns Becky Anderson live for us from dubai. So hows it going there and whats the investigation leading up to right now . Reporter well, fredricka, smoke still billowing from what is a luxury hotel in dubai after it was involved in a massive fire on new years eve. As you pointed out, firefighters continue the process of colding down a smoldering building. The fire at the address downtown started at around 9 30 local time and sent flames shooting out of the 163floor building. All this as revelers gathered close by to watch what was a spectacular firework display on the worlds tallest building. S burj khalifa. Firefighters battled the blaze well into the early hours. The government here in dubai says everyone was safely evac wapted from the hotel ands only 16 people, they say, were treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation. Investigators now clearly working to determine the cause of the fire. The second major fire to engulf a dubai highrise in 2015. The deputy head of dubai police tweeting just in the past couple of hours, this photograph issued a while ago, saying it shows where the fire started last night, and finding one source telling cnn that the fire may have broken out in a residence on the buildings 20th floor when curtains caught alight, still working for you to get more information on this. Fredricka . All right, becky, thank you so much. You and i spending a lot of time on the air yesterday, as it was happening. Remarkable that the casualty count was not even higher. Thanks so much, becky. All right. Right here in the states, it will be top ranked clemson against alabama in College Footballs National Title game. Clemson beating oklahoma 3717 in the orange bowl. They are now 140. And in the other playoff semifinal, Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry scored two touchdowns as the alabama crimson tide rolled over Michigan State 380 in the cotton bowl. The championship game is january 11th in arizona. All right. Thats a look at your new years morning headlines. Im fredricka whitfield. Back to you. The political season about to pick up speed. The Iowa Caucuses just one month away. It will be the first time that we have real results from real voters. We cant just mindlessly speculate anymore . That is over. We actually have a real Political Panel now for insight. Cnn political commentator and former Communications Director for senator ted cruz and former Reagan White House executive and cnn political commentator and jeb bush supporter. Great to see you. Hi. Happy new year. Happy new year to you, too. Great to have you with us today. Okay. Anna, start with you. Look into your crystal ball. Whats about to happen now . Oh, lord, alyson, that crystal ball was so so hard to read in to 2015. Im not sure ill do a better job of it in 2016. But youre right. We are in a sprint. Contribution im very happy to tell you we have about two more weeks of mindless speculation left. Oh, good. You do know that iowa voters, New Hampshire voters, these folks just take their time. They like to look under the hood, and a lot of them, half of them, dont make up their mind until that last week, but certainly we are in the sprint, and i think youre going to see a lot of candidates spending a lot of time, some of them focused on iowa, some more focused in New Hampshire. Too reasonable. Bite off some stuff and chew on it. Oh, good. Jeffrey lorde. The prop sills, tell me why its true or false in the new year. Trump cannot hold on in iowa, the evangelical base, too big. They dont like the negativity. They go cruz. True or false and why . Sure, possible. Sure, absolutely. Possible. Whats all the hedge, jeffrey . Come on its 2016 take a risk. Are you asking me, could ted cruz win this in iowa . Yes. The question is what can he do beyond that . And the one thing that i would add is Ronald Reagan, of course, lost iowa and became president. Rick santorum and governor huckabee both won iowa and never became iowa. So winning iowa in and of itself doesnt do anything. I really do think this is going to be a long march here. A long march. New hampshire, south carolina, nevada are and on beyond that. So whoever wins, even if donald trump wins iowa, thats not going to solve anything. Amanda . Or settle anything. Amanda, winning iowa doesnt mean anything . Its always good to win iowa, but here are the thing. Iowa doesnt crown a king but it knocks out a lot of princes. I think were going to see a lot of candidates remember how big this field is, theyre going to get knocked out and then another big shakeup when the polls is redistributed. Think about it. The guys in the undercard debate may have just 1 or 20 perce i polls but that could mean a lot. After iowa, a big shakeup. Good to win but winning iowa is not everything. Cant trust the other two with this next one, staying with you. Great. After what we saw with trump and jeb where trump i know youre sick of it but saying it again, trump looks at jeb and says, whos talking, me or you, jeb, me or you . And she gives a little of that action, which is what jeb bush said, and i say this is a new jeb bush who decided to be the antitrump, and it is going to give him a boost. Yes or no, amanda . Yeah. I mean, its always good to see jeb assert himself on the national stage. I think a lot of people are waiting to see real personality come out and the less guarded jeb bush is the better it is for him. That said, i still think its a bad idea for jeb bush to define his candidacy via trump. Be his own man. Quick looking back on his florida run, trying to run with that, and get in the middle of that. Anna, youre close, of course, to jeb bush. Was that the moment in the last cnn debate where he found his sea legs . Does he feel he found his voice that night . You know, im seeing a different jeb bush in the last several weeks. I think that, really, since what seems like ancient history, but since the very bad debate in boulder, i think he figured out theatrics is part of the Job Description and is now doing it. I also see him doing much more focus on New Hampshire, which i think is smart, as weve discussed. Iowa means something. It doesnt mean everything. The only time iowa means something huge is when its an upset like in 2008 when barack obama upset then Hillary Clinton. If we see that on either the republican or democrat side, it would be huge. On jeb, i think youll see him keep grinding away. A lot of retail politics, spending a lot of time in the early states, New Hampshire and south carolina, and i think youre going to see him try to do this the oldfashioned way. One voter at a time. Amanda, do you want to jump in . Yeah. One thing about that, the interesting part of the new jeb dynamic is that a rising jeb, a rising Chris Christie makes life a lot harder for marco rubio. In many ways theyre competing for the same type of voter. The more they clash, the more those three continue to be competitive with each other, marks it easier for a cruz or trump to take the bigger lane. Actually i think the two young bucks have been locking horns and were going to could not seeing cruz and rubio who are so evenly matched, both rookie senators, who are, you know, both lawyers, very different styles. One goes poetic, the other goes legalese on us, and i think youre going to see the two of them clash a lot, which im not sure doesnt open up a space for another candidate, maybe jefferies, maybe somebody else. Jeffrey what about this one . The chance that donald trump picks a female running mate before the convention . Before the convention . Yes. Possible, yeah, sure. I can see it. Possible. Its possible that alyson knocks me unconscious in the next 15 seconds. Probable you know, so i think, sure, absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, if donald trump wins this nomination or it becomes certain ahead of time that hes going to do it, yeah. Yes. Thats possible. He could pick carly fiorina. Oh, come on, jeffrey he cant stand carly fiorina. He has said over and over again, five minutes of hearing her voice is, you know but carly holds her own in the debate. Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Couldnt stand Lyndon Johnson but made him vice presidet. Donald trump is no jfk. One other thing here. I really think this is going to be the year of the outsider. Again. And, i mean, Election Year itself. So whether its donald trump or ted cruz or whom ever, i think the outside is winning. I think thats why donald trump picks on jeb bush all the tile. Not because he thinks jeb bush is a threat but because jeb bush is the very symbol of the establishment. And whether its jeb bush or john kasich or others, i think thats a real weak inside and somebody on the outside is going to win this nomination. I think were going to leave it there. Absolutely. Jeffrey happy new year. Thank you, guys. Thank you, amanda and anna, great to see you. [ speaking in Foreign Language ]. Thank you. Mick . The evolving threat from isis growing deadlier downing a passenger plane over egypt and carrying attacks in egypt, inspiring the first deadly attack here at home. How will world leader combat isis . Well discuss that ahead. After a dvt blood clot. Mind when i got out of the hospital what about my family . My lil buddy . And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. Then my doctor told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. Whfight back fastts tums smoothies starts dissolving the instant it touches your tongue and neutralizes stomach acid at the source tum, tum, tum, tum smoothies only from tums now, in 2015 the number of refugees fleeing wartorn countries like syria reached the level of an international crisis. Thousands have died making dangerous journeys to escape turmoil at home. Millioning more nowhere to go. There will be a solution . Whats going to happen in syria . Whats going to happen with daesh . What will the new year bring . Lets talk an cnn Global Affairs analyst and of course happy new year to you and wish you all the best always. So lets take a look into the ball. We have annreasonable expect apgs of speed when it comes to dealing with terror, dealing with daesh, isil or isis, whatever you want to call it. How do you see progress in this year . You have to color me skeptical. I think that its good thing that there are more negotiations taking place, that all of the different foreign players are trying to push assad and the rebels into some kind of a negotiated settlement, but im not very optimistic that thats going to go very far. The problem is that all the outer, outside players, whether russia, iran, the United States, saudi arabia and so on, none of these countries seem to agree on the basics. Who are the bad guys . Different people have different ideas of who the bad guy. Who are the good guy, therefore . Can assad stay . Can there be a solution with assad . Some say yes, some say never. So because these other groups cannot arrive at a common idea of what progress looks like, any negotiations towards progress, i dont think will go very far. Its a good thing theyre talking. Always better to talk than to shoot, but the problem is that unless you have a real framework, conversations are not going to go anywhere. You see a massive deployment of u. S. Troops on the ground . I dont see that happening, unless absent a major event in the United States. I think Public Opinion in the United States will remain strongly opposed to putting boots on the ground, and no american president , especially not a lame duck one, lets not forget, is going to be able to persuade the American People that we need to put american boots on the ground. So absent, hope that never happens, absent a major terrorist attack against an American Target i dont see bill numbers of american soldiers going. 2016, taking on islam within its own faith. The battle for the soul of islam. Will we see the Muslim Community coming on the state level and on the popular level against the enemy . I argue thats already going on. It will continue to gain steam, i think. There are conversations taking place among islamic scholars how to deal with this. I was in iran earlier this month, earlier last month, and there was a lot of conversations taking place there. The Islamic Community is already grappling with this. I dont think they need a major event or a major calendar event to take place for them to accelerate. I think thats taking place already. You dont have massive armies, say of saudi arabia go either way on that, but turkey. You dont have them saying, this is our fight. Yes, u. S. , help us. Give us money, planning, intel, but this is us. Nobodys going to tell us what being muslim is. Well take it. Were you dont see that, and many say thats what should be happening . I dont think thats a realistic expectation because the enemy is not a traditional nation state. Even though isis controls territory, its not as if a Muslim Country can say, we are going to go and send our troops there and fight those people. These guys are everywhere. Turkey is dealing, you mentioned turkey, theyre dealing with extremism within their own country. Isis is already, you know theres been landfall in turkey, events of killings within turkey. This is a struggle within, not a struggle without so much and that struggle is already taking place. I would pay less attention to political leaders in the muslim world and more attention to to civil groups, i mean, sort of activists, religious figures and i think if you focus your attention there youll see theres a lot of struggle already going on about how to deal with extremism alarmists, politicians have different agendas to deal with, and sometimes they are contradictory to what wed like them to be doing, but in in ordinary Civil Society, theres a lot taking place. Thats room for optimism. A lot of time before were going to see real change on the ground and all about how we spin it. Any look from bobby ghosh in 2016 . Any chance, grow out the hair . I know you had a big head of hair at some point. A long time ago. Not going back to that. The world doesnt need to see that, trust me. A successful look. Trust me. Alisyn . He looks fantastic. Meanwhile, donald trump rewriting the rulebook for president ial campaigns but how will the president ial race effect congressional races this year . John king is here with his magic wall, next. A check of the headlines at the newsdesk. All right, thanks again. Good morning, and happy new year, im fredricka whitfield. A look at the top stories revelers around the world celebrated the new year overnight. The Biggest Party in america, times square. All three, two, one [ cheers ] a Million People squeezing in to watch the ball drop under the watchful eye of more than 6,000 nypd officers. Security was reinforced after new york, washington and los angeles became targets of a Terror Threat originating overseas. Terror driving tight security in paris in the wake of the attacks there, that didnt stop thousands from jamming into the boulevards to celebrate, and two rail stations in munich, germany reopened. Evacuated because of a reported isis terror plot on new years eve. Authorities say the plot involved between five and seven potential suicide attackers. They say intelligence officials from another country tipped off German Police about the threat of an attack and the connection to isis. And in this country bill cos it buy taking to twitter to start the new year posting a message thanking his friends and fans for their support. Louis, but levees are still threatening to fail around the town of porton bersu. Thats a look at your new years morning headlines. Alisyn and chris, back to you. Okay. At the stroke of midnight it officially became an Election Year. Congratulations. Feels good. All eyes on the president ial race, but there are plenty of key congressional races to watch as well. How will Donald Trumps rise affect the republican reign in both houses of congress . Here to illustrate it all with a magic wall, cnn chief National Correspondent john king. Happy new year. Im going to take a vacation. Can i have the year off . No. A busy year for you. Okay. Lets start right now. What do you predict the trump effect will be, not obviously just on the president ial race this year but on all other congressional races . An easier question to answer in march or april when we know more about the outcome of the president ial primaries. No question heading into the new year republicans are worried, democrats happy. You already hear Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders on the campaign trail saying all republicans are antimuslim and antiafricanamerican, antiimmigrant and antihispanic. Theyre trying to paint the Republican Party with the trump brush, if you will and the republican establishment is clearly worried about it. Theyre worried that some races that are probably leaning republican now, a senate map, we can go through them, worried some of the races leaning republican could go democratic if trump stays in the headlines, the nominee, even more worried. Its a factor. How big . Ask me in march, april, may. A little bit of whats going on, though, is inhouse disorder. Right . The gop have made big gains since obama has been the president of the United States. And maybe theres a feeling within the party that they didnt get what they were bargaining for in terms of, you know, this big movement of blue to red across that map that you can show us and yet feel they dont have anything to show for that so theyre angry at their own party. Can we see that . Exactly right, chris, and why the Republican Base is so upset. A senate map. Back to senate races in a minute. Take you to the house map. Look at all the red. The United States of america, 247 house districts controlled by republicans. A lot of red. A big majority. Republican, remember this, back to right after president obama was elected. All the blue. Democrats had the majority, 257. This is after the election in 2008. Right . The 2010 midterms, huge republican gains, get majority. 2012, democrats get a little back. They won eight seats in 2012. Not a big president ial sweep in the second term. Only eight seats for democrats then 2014, wow, boom. Look at this. A lot of people on the coasts, which are blue, tend to forget this. America is very red. The Republican Base is upset. Have a House Majority, won the Senate Majority in midterms last time, 31 governorships and dont think theyre getting conservative leadership. Part because you have a democrat in the white house but why you have trump and others talking to the Republican Base saying why do we keep winning but not getting what we want . A big part of the dynamic. John, what happens with that calculation if donald trump runs as a thirdparty candidate as he sometimes threatens to to . What would be his signature animal . If you look at the data, donald trump is a thirdparty candidate. The data today as we enter the year and again, if we learned anything in 2015 to remember in 2016 is things change and we live in a volatile environment. Look at the date taye today. Donald trump is a thirdparty candidate hurts the Republican Party and you can almost guarantee a democratic victory. Almost. How does that play out . People come out to vote for trump as an independent theyre still voting for house and senate and choices are d or r. You would assume most are republicans nap is a potential wild card especially when it comes to turnout operations. Republicans trying to turn out votes for president in a state, also, vote for senate but the trump factor there becomes pretty strange. What do you got . Whats going to be his petronous curse, his party animal . I got it. The teddy bear what do you say, john king . Well, hes the human chainsaw. How do you attach an animal to that. Hes some kind of a lion. Im going with the liger. The lion tiger mix. Hes a lyger. So much in there. Well explain later but let you go, john. Thanks so much. I got to go get an animal book. You really do. Happy new year. Happy new year. More like a purist to me. Pick one or the other. Not as wishy washer as a lyger might be, chris. Looking at politics, also at money. It has been a bumpy ride for investors in 2015. 401 k s rising and falls, market doing much of the same. What can we expect in this new year . The Financial Resolutions we should all make, now, coming up. Sweettreatgoodness holdontoyourtiara, kindofday. Live 24 7 with 24 7 digestive support. Try align, the undisputed 1 ge recommended probiotic. All right. Happy new year once again. Youre probably swearing to stick to a healthier lifestyle this year. Maybe join a gym, eat more kale. How about our Financial Health . Joining us, our chefs of finance, chief Business Correspondent Christine Romans and cnn economic analyst hana ga rather ra. What we want to do, we often say, lower Credit Card Debt and spend less money. But theres more involved things we can be aware of, and youre going to walk us through some of the resolutions we need to be making. Absolutely. Its a new year. I always say new years and your birthday, the two times you really look at your money. Twice a year. New years and your birthday. And i need to buy myself a nice something for my birthday. Talk about Mortgage Rates. What do predict is going to happen for those thinking of buying a home, refiing, any of that . Youll hear about how mortgage and Interest Rates are rising, true, but Mortgage Rates will rise slowly and well below the historical average for postworld war ii. You want to buy a home . A nice time to buy a home. Rates are low. Refinance, the biggest moneysaving thing you do all year, if you refinance your loan. Absolutely. Many have already done that. A couple of times. Hello you know . 400 saved per month, and thats something we should think about, too. Theres going to be more market volatility, saving will be important this year. Right. Because of that volatility we saw last year, so many of us, well talk about that in a minute, are a little shy, and were looking at our personal finances in a little different way, which brings me to gas prices. Weve seen some lows. Do you think thats going to extend into this new year . Gas prices stay pretty low. They do. And you really need to look at that money not as money falling out of your pocket into something else. Important to take the savings, build your cash reserves. Make sure you have three to six months of money on hand. Liquid money on hand for an emergency, and really take a look at using that little bit extra in your Monthly Budget to pay down high interest Credit Card Debt, get out of debt and start saving moving forward. Important to get out of debt before Interest Rates rise then the cost of debt becomes higher. Gas will stay low, i agree. Oil around 50 a barrel because opec is continuing to pump a lot. Iranian oconline as sanctions away and still have shale here at home. And that doesnt mean great news for the Energy Sector . It doesnt. And not for investors, you keep hearing volatility in stock markets, concern be Global Demand weak. U. S. Raising Interest Rates, the rest of the world low Interest Rates, some countries negative what does that mean for investors . You shouldnt expect Big Stock Market gains. I dont think anybody is forecasting that. In your stock Market Portfolio incredibly important to be dollar cost averaging, buying stocks every month. Periodically make sure you know what your mix is for your risk and how long you have until you retire, and be putting money away into a 529 for your kids. College tuition going up. Invest for your childrens education, too. Important to remember, too, even though the u. S. Market is not going up, u. S. Blue chip stocks are a great place to be. Jut because we wont get the returns maybe from the past were the pretty house on the ugly block that is the global economy. The rest of the world is not doing as well in many cases as the u. S. Since we have the time to ask you this, looking forward, theres probably a couple people just starting out. Right . Starting out thinking, im hearing my parents tell me in my ear get into the market. I want to start. It be very overwhelming. Whats the best piece of advice to tell somebody, the new year has come, this is the year to do it. Dip my baby toe into the stock market . Absolutely do it. Its terrifying. You see the volatility. Take the long view. Youre a young person and be in the market, theres room for changes. And there is going to be volatility this year, no question. You dont sell when the market goes down. Remember that. Hang tight. Everybody panics. Its our psychology, but you got to hang tight, weather the storm and you will end up better in stocks. Two kinds of people in the world. The kind who think about how theyre spend their money and the kind that think how to grow their money you want to be the person growing your money. Make sure you are living on a little less than you bring home every month and the rest investing and do that in the stock market. You do that with investments, and i think 52 of american households have stocks. They have been over the past six years able to grow their Household Net Worth because wages are not doing it. Not getting higher wages, it was through the stock market. I dont think the stock market will be gang busters but you need to be in it. For those that can, and given the volatility and some sectors will feel their own, the Emergency Fund. Something youve taught me a lot about. Having that extra cushion. Sure. How whats the best way to start an Emergency Fund for yourself . It has to be automatic. Take it of you 0 your paycheck, almost not see that money. Its so important. Half of all americans cant put their hands on even 2,000 if they needed to in an emergency. You have to have the saving. A lot of people are one flat tire away from ruining their Household Budget and being in debt on household credit. Get out of the Credit Card Debt. Its the worst thing and get out of debt. For young people with student loans, ten years. Pay it off in ten years. A lot of kids are trying to get out of it, from under in five. They want to be part of the middle class and want to invest. Not paying down a student loan. We give you a lot of information, seems overwhelming. The great thing youre here for us all year long. We can turn to you when we have questions whats going on out there what we can do. Thank you so much for the new years resolutions for our Financial Health. Happy new year. Happy new year. To you as well. Speaking of resolutions, president obama has one a top priority for 2016, of course, his final year in office. Talking about gun control. Will there really finally be change in washington . The country is still reeling from the terror attack in San Bernardino last month. How do lawmakers plan to tackle that in the new year . Here to discuss, a commentator and conservative radio host ben ferguson. Happy new year to both of you, gentlemen. An interesting pairing on this topic, because lets start with the Common Ground. You actually come from similar positions in terms of your families use guns. Youre from hunting families. You both know how to use guns you shoot guns yet youre on different sides of the gun control issue. Charles, start with you. What do you think lawmakers plan to do about gun control in the coming year . I dont think theyre necessarily is a plan and i dont think theres necessarily going to be a lot of progress. Right . Because what ends up happening is that this debate runs up against kind of constitutional structure of the country. The gun ownership and the gun debate overlaps quite significantly with the kind of wide open spaces in this country, and people who want more regulations are generally in the clustered urban spaces, but because of the way the senate is structured, every state, no matter how wide open, how few people are in that state, still have two senators. Right . You have you know, brooklyn has more population than all of alaska, but new york state is only going to have two senators just like alaska has two senators. So when you get down to voting on an actual kind of more regulations, the people in alaska who are more hunting culture are going to say, those senators say, my constituents dont necessarily want this and im not going to necessarily support this. Whats made it such a challenge in congress to see any sort of action, but then president obama said after the tragedy in newtown, he would do whatever he could. Sounds like hes eyeing some executive actions on gun control . Yeah. I think youll see an awful lot of executive actions, especially the closer we get to the end of his presidency. This is something he wants to be a part of his legacy. If they really want to get something done on capitol hill, starting new years off on the right foot, theres things charles and i and others can agree on that is probably taking smaller steps to deal with specific issues. One would be Mental Health. There is i think bipartisan support found on dealing with Mental Health and what we should do when it comes to buying a gun or if committed by a state or by a judge, those are the types of Things Congress could have success on. Try to turn it into a massive gun control law it will not pass. There arent the votes there as charles talked about. You have leadership, focus on simple issues to find the Common Ground, i actually think they could get something done most americans would support. How about that compromised support . Everybody after newtown and ar the aurora theater said we need something to somehow deal with th this. I think theres a Mental Health but the transfer of weapons that require no background check, whatever. Hes saying baby steps. Im saying 40 transfers that dont require any checks is going to be really hard to deal with the Mental Health piece because its only dealing with the 6 that do wire some sort of background check. You have to combine a couple to make them work. Excellent point. Ben, tackle that. The loophole called in the vernacular mean private transfers dont have to be recorded. With Mental Health, how do you tackle that . When it comes to the private checks or the private dealings between one or the other, if you come at this from a sensible solution, which is, hey, if im buying a gun from my dad, for example, whos in Law Enforcement and weve traded guns multiple times since ive been a young adult that is an example of where, if you have a caveat for that, i think you can find Common Ground. There are many people that say, if im trading a gun with my neighbor or with a hunting buddy, where he says, you know what . I really would love to have that 30 aught 6 and tired of my 38 over here. Lets do a trade, that is where, if you have Something Like that where there can be a compromise for the reality, that does take place a lot. There are a lot of people in hunting clubs, for example, that have club guns where somebody wants to go use it and they trade with another person. Right, but then the happens all the time. Why is that paperwork so onerous . So onerous to ask you to record that transaction . Well, its onerous because you have to go through a residenced armed dealer, pay another fee on top of it depending on the class of firearm, it can be exkpleemly expensive and in some cases set up a trust and have each person that use that gun on a trust. When you look at the paperwork, i point to the federal government. They havent made they made is so hard to do these things. Stream line the process, again, i think you would have a lot of people that would agree on it. But i think even, you know, more common than than even maybe gun shows and more common than, you know, hunting clubs is just intergeneration transfers. You have a grandfather. Hes older. Doesnt hunt anymore. Passes it down. Those are fine. We had guns my whole life, me and my brothers, and i dont think other than the bb guns and pellet guns we never bought those guns. An uncle, a grandfather lawmakers dont need to tackle that. I am saying that. Im saying just because the father and grandfather was a responsible gun own hear nothing to do with the person theyre passing it down to. Right . I do believe that transfer needs to be recorded and there has to be some check on the kind of, the mental stability and kind of crim malbackground of the person coming into possession of that gun. Right now that is not necessarily the case and i think that becomes a loophole that gets kind of fuzzy for people, because we want to say, its in my family. I should be able to do whatever i want to within my family. It doesnt work that way. Last word, ben. Many people will say this its not a loophole, because there is already a law that says that if you are a convicted felon you are not allowed to own a fire warm, whether its given to you or not. You cannot own it. You cant purchase it. Sure, but if youre not a convicted felon, maybe have some sort of mental instabilities not recorded that becomes an issue. And many of our shooters are not convicted felons. Right. Where i go back to, if we can just focus first off on the Mental Health side of this, and build some momentum from it, there are also is a big trust issue. People on both sides that do not trust the other side and think theyre always going to go for something a step further. If they can just focus on one piece at a time, that could be where we could actually be having conversation next year as, wow, we did some good this year and it makes sense. Otherwise we wont get anything done at all. Thanks so much. Great to get at least a small point of compromise there. Thanks. Happy new year. Over to michaela. The political season about to pick up speed. The Iowa Caucuses just one month away. It will be the first time that we have real results from real voters. We cant mindlessly speculate anymore . That is over. Right. And we actually have a real Political Panel here now to give insight. Cnn political commentator and former Communications Director foresenator Ted Cruz Amanda carpenter and former Reagan White House jeffrey lorde, trump supporter and cnn political commentator and jeb bush supporter anna. Good to see you. Happy new year. Happy new year to you, too. Great to have you with us today. Okay. Anna, start with you. Look into your crystal ball. Whats about to happen now . Oh, lord, alisyn, that crystal ball was was so so hard to read in 2015. Im not sure im going to do a better job of it in 2016, but youre right. We are in the sprint. Chris, im glad, very happy to tell you we do have about two more weeks of mindless speculation left. Oh, good. You know . You do know that iowa voters, New Hampshire voters, these folks just take their time. They like to look under the hood and a lot of them, half of them, dont make up their mind until that last week, but certainly we are in the sprint. I think youre going see a lot of candidates spending a lot of time. Some of them focused on iowa. Some more focused on New Hampshire. Too reasonable. Bite off stuff and chew on it. Oh, good. Jeffrey lorde. The proposition. Tell me why its true and or false in the new year. Trump cannot hold on in iowa. The evangelical base, too big. They dont like the negativity. They go cruz. True or false and why . Sure. Possible. Sure, possible. Possible . Absolutely. The one thing whats all the hedge, jeffrey . Come on. Its 2016. Take a risk are you asking me, could ted cruz win this in iowa . Yes. The question is, what can he do beyond that . And the one thing that i would add is ronald range, of course, lost iowa and became president. Rick santorum and governor huckabee both won iowa, and never became president. So winning iowa in and of itself doesnt do anything. I really do think this is going to be a long march here, a long march. New hampshire, south carolina, nevada and on beyond that. So whoever wins, even if donald trump wins iowa, thats not going to solve anything. Amanda . Or settle anything. Ning iowa doesnt mean anything . Its always good to win iowa. Heres the thing. It doesnt crown a king but knocks out a lot of princes. Remember how big the field is, theyre going to get knocked out and then another big shapeup when the polling is redistributed. The guys in the undercard debate may only have 1 or 2 but that can mean a lot for the top tier candidates. After iowa, a big shakeup and may start again. Its always good to win but winning iowa is not everything. I cant trust the other two with this next one amanda so ill stay with you. After what we saw with jeb at the most recent debate youre sick of it, saying it again. Trump looks at jeb and says, whos talkin, me or you . Im talking. A little of that action, what jeb bush did. I say, a new jeb bush, decided to be the antitrump and its going to give him a boost. Yes or no, amanda . Yeah. Its always good to see jeb assert himself on the national stage. I think a lot of people are claiming for that, waiting to see real personality come out. The less guarded jeb bush is the better for hill. That said, i still think its a bad idea for jeb bush to define his candidacy via trump. He needs to be his own man, quit looking back on his florida record trying to run on that and look forward at the current fights that have happened with the Obama Administration and get in the middle of that. Ana, youre close, of course, to jeb bush. Was that the moment in the last cnn debate where he found his sea legs . Does he feel that he found his voice that night . You know, im seeing a different jeb bush in the last several weeks. I think that really since, what seems like ancient history, but since the very bad debate in boulder, i think he figured out theatrics is part of the Job Description and is now doing it. I also see him doing much more focus on New Hampshire, which i think is smart. You know, as weve discussed. Iowa means something. It doesnt mean everything. The only time iowa means something huge is when its an upset like in 2008 when barack obama upset then Hillary Clinton. If we see that kind of thing either on the democrat or republican side, it would be huge. On jeb, i think youre going to see him, you know, keep grinding away. A lot of retail politics, spending a lot of time in the early states, New Hampshire and south carolina, and i think youre going to see him try to do this the oldfashioned way. One voter at a time. Amanda, you want to jump in . Yeah, one thing about that, the interesting part of the new jeb dynamic is that a rising jeb, a rising Chris Christie makes life a lot harder for marco rubio. In many ways theyre competing for the same type of voter, and the more they clash, the more, you know, those three continue to be competitive with each other, makes it easier for a cruz or a trump to take the bigger lane. Actually, i think its the two young bucks locking horns and i think well continue to see cruz and rubio who are so evenly matched. True. Both rookie senators, who are, you know, both lawyers, very different styles. One goes poetic, the other one goes legalese on us, and i think youre going to see the two of them clash a lot, which im not sure doesnt open up a space for another candidate, maybe jefferies, maybe somebody else. What about this one. The chance donald trump pick as female running mate before the convention . Before the convention . Yes. Possible. Yeah. Sure. I can see it. Possible. Its possible that alisyn knocks me unconscious in the next 15 seconds. Probable. You know, i think, sure, absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, if donald trump wins this nomination or it becomes certain ahead of time hes going to do it, yeah. Yes. Thats possible. He couldfiorina. Come on, jeffrey. He cant stand carly fiorina, hes said over and over again five minutes of hearing her voice is but, wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Jfk couldnt stand Lyndon Johnson either but he made him vice president. Yeah, well, donald trump is no jfk. Theres one one other thing here. I really do think this is going to be the year of the outsider. Again. The Election Year itself. So whether its donald trump or ted cruz or whoever, i think the outside is winning and thats why donald trump picks on jeb bush all the time. Not because he thinks hes a threat but jeb bush is the symbol of the establishment. And whether its jeb bush or john kasich or some of these others i think thats a real weakness and i think somebody on the outside is going to win this nomination. I think were going to leave it there. Absolutely. Jeffrey happy new year. Thank you, guys. Thank you, amanda, ana, great to see you guys. [ speaking in Foreign Language ]. Mik. It is getting very close to the time to walk the walk and just one month the election season really gets under way. The Iowa Caucuses. Hasnt been yet. No, no. Once the ballots go, everything becomes the real show. Its going to be a slog for the white house after that. So lets talk about the democrats. You got hillary and bernie up on top. What do they need to do to get the nomination . Maria cardona, democratic strategist, donna brazile, political strategist and cnn democratic strategist paul begala. Were not changes in 2016, youre attached to a Hillary Super pac and the titles all the time whenever you guys come in. Full disclosure, people should know that. I am paid by a super pac. Good to know. When we plolook at it you have hillary and bernie. You do not believe that hillary will not win the nomination, right . Of course im for her and trying to gelt her nominated, even if i werent, she has a commanding lead. The party likes her, even among bernie voters. She has a stratospherically high voting rate. What about her is potentially problematic. His strength with young people could be a challenge for her. That is to say, you cant be president in my party unless you excite young people. Bernie is doing that. Hillary has to find a way to match that. He has an energy with young people, its trick for him and for the party. A challenge for hillary, meet him among the Younger Voters and try to challenge and beat him there. Maria, look into your crystal ball if you would for 2016. What happens in iowa and New Hampshire . I think actually that Hillary Clinton will win iowa. I think, hopefully, she will also win New Hampshire. I am also a hillary supporter, but i think bernie will continue to hang on. He has a lot of money. He has the ability to go back to those donors, because he has a lot of small dollar donors. He would do very well in iowa. He could do very well in New Hampshire which is the neighboring state, and is the closest, he is the closest they have to a favorite son. He will do obviously very well in vermont and massachusetts in the northeast. So i think that the robust dialogue that they have between the two of them, which will focus on making sure that middleclass families have what they need, not just to survive but to succeed in this economy, is a very good one for the Democratic Party. Donna, how does she deal with the upsidedown positive negatives when it comes to trustworthiness and ratings overall . Continues to reach out, touch voters and convince them she is the right person at this time to lead the country. Im neutral, vice chair of the Democratic Party and i do believe Bernie Sanders has a high probability of winning one of those early contests. He has a lot of enthusiasm. Hes been able to raise a lot of money. Many of his donors have not maxed out. So were going to have a competitive primary season. Yes, Hillary Clinton is very favorable in the polls, but Bernie Sanders has proven that hes up to the task of addressing some of these dbig issues that demming care about. The economy. Hes addressed, of course, criminal Justice Reform and i just want to make sure its a neutral party, that i can talk about both candidates. I like them both and, of course, we still have martin omalley, whos out there, still trying to get to first base. There you go. Paul, obviously, always surprises. You can never guard against what surprise might crop up. 2015 certainly filled with many surprises. Care to predict whats going to happen on the other side . You know, weve all sat around for the last six months as donald trump dominated and presumed, all professionals well, trump will go away and then what . You know, the last month of this year, last year, he didnt go away. He kept going up. And i think democrats now have to be prepared for a trump nomination. And he is enormously talented. Fatally flawed. I dont think he can be president but upended the Republican Party. Fatally flawed is exactly what the gop says about Hillary Clinton, and if you face donald trump, how do you think she weathers the relentless battering he will give you on all the things you dont like to talk about . Trump against hillary, i would, i would bet the farm. Heres why. Why . On that, he loves to attack, but hes a bully. Bullies back downed when you stand up to them. Donald trump couldnt last three hours in a debate, had to negotiate it down to two. Hillary testified under withering opponents and didnt faint or negotiate down to two hours. And truth and hyperbole. Where are your emails, why did you let those people die in den ben gauzy. I dont think daunting is the right word. Anybody in politics thats been tried and that has been under the gauntlet its Hillary Clinton. And i think that her supporters within the Democratic Party, which i think is a huge point here, you know, you all love to talk about her favorability or unfavorability as it were, if donald trump is the nominee, i completely agree with paul. Republican need to prepare themselves for the real possibility he will be the nominee, then you have the contrast between somebody like donald trump, who if he is the nominee will get there with probably not a whole lot of favor act amongst the Republican Party. Its very low favorability for him right now, versus Hillary Clinton, who is probably up to 80 favorability among her own party. That is where you start to actually win a general election race. So she starts from a very positive point of voters within her own party and then she can energize and mobilize others who will see trump as a fatally flawed candidate, and the contrast between her enthusiasm, optimism for this country versus the kind of language he has been using, which essentially devalues our american principles, will be a fantastic contrast for her and i think will help her win the general election. And yet, donna, in headtohead matchups in those polls she does not run away with it. Because we live in a very polarized, divided country. But i want to be a contrarian this morning, and i think ted cruz, i think we need to look at ted cruz. Ted cruz has really come up in the polls recently. He has a, a very good ground operation in iowa and ready to compete in all of those socalled super tuesday southern sec primaries. So i think ted cruz has been the sleeper in the race. I think donald trump is going to come under another difficult storm. This one he might not be able to find an anchor, with the Republican Base, and i think ted cruz is the candidate we should watch out for. Donna, paul, maria, happy new year. Thanks so much for being here. Happy new year to you. Thanks, guys. Michaela. Guys in 2016 we could see lifechanging medical breakthroughs. Dr. Sanjay gupta is here to talk about that and how eliminating one thing from your diet could really improve your health. Sax always makes me think of drunk thoughts. You know . Does it . Welcome back to this special a lot to get to including incredible breakthroughs in medicine we could see this year. And new laws on the book, you need to know about. First a check of the news at the nez dufk. Happy new year. Im fredricka whitfield. A look at the top storiesdid she say 2016 entering with big celebrations around the world, including the big one in new york city. All three, two, one [ cheers ] more than a Million People packing into times square to celebrate. Security tight. He left the wildly popular show after three seasons following a contract dispute and became a money manager and investor. He was 82. Thats a look at the headlines. Im fredricka whitfield. Michaela, back to you. Whenever there is Important Health news, our chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta is the man to turn to do break it all down for us. This morning were looking ahead to 2016 for reasons to be hopeful when it comes to our health in the new year. Dr. Sanjay gupta joins us now from atlanta. We probably should be talking about hangover remedies, but we will stick to the things that a lot of us are really feeling starting to resonate with us. We know a few weeks ago, jimmy carter, former president , announced he a cancerfree at age 91. Talk about this, because this has got to represent really good news for other Cancer Patients . I think it absolutely does and keep in mind that hes 91 years old. So you know, it says many things. Good news for Cancer Patients across the board but also people who are older, always weighing this idea, should i get therapy . Too hard on my body . Still important questions. At 91 hes doing well. Keep in mind, michaela, he has metastatic melanoma, a type of skin cancer that spread throughout his body. Found in his liver and brain and he got an operation on his liver to remove that, radiation to his brain and taking another drug known as an amino therapy drug and it seems to at least at this time be working. Theres no evidence that the cancer is in his body. He got scans and it doesnt show it and he says hes feeling well. So fingers are crossed, but this is, again, pretty exciting news that he seems to at least be free of cancer at this time. A couple of points to remember. He is an extraordinary human being. He has beat the odds in a number of ways here. We know hes made of other stuff, but the fact that he is 91. I mean that is truly, truly remarkable and speaks to the science and where the science is going. That is where i think were feeling most hopeful. Correct . I think so. Let me tell you, these immunotherapy drugs, weve been hearing about these generally for several years but the drug hes on was just approved last year, or in 2014. Its amazing. Think of it like this, michaela, youre developing cancer in your body in the time were talking and your immune system is fighting that constant war in your body. What happens including certain types of cancer including. He melanoma, this drug turns on the immune system back on and lets the body do what it can do. Lets the immune system fight the cancer. Its remarkable. If it works, seems to be in his case, significant forelots of patients out there. Good news on the cdc on the hive ai hivaids chase, way up among two groups. What are those two groups and an overall look where this epidemic is headed . Overall numbers are down, you mentioned. Significant dips for a period of time and plateauing. Among gay, bisexual latino men between the ages of 13 raand 24. Young men, its gone up. Gone up still 87 in terms of new cases. Wow. Pretty significant. We have made a lot of progress in terms of treatment, as you know. The cocktails of drugs have turned people who have this diagnosis into one with chronic disease as opposed to a death sentence. Youve heard that, and theres new medications with 90 sort of significance, they can decrease the likelihood that youll become infected with hivaids. Really, almost acting like a preventive. These are really important developments rchltd. And the new aids vaccine about to do a trial here in the United States . Yeah. Robert gallo, remember his name . The one really the first person to associate the fact that this thing known at now everyone knows at hiv was causing infections. People didnt know this before some of his work. Its his trial. Hes been working on this for a long time. It hasnt really started. Going into phase one trials but already gone through Animal Studies and hes optimistic about it. I think the scientific world is paying attention. Short of a vaccine, michaela, so many things people can do. Absolutely. The preventatives, get tested, make sure theyre always practicing safe sex. Awareness is key here. Good news on the diabetes front. Remarkable. The first time in 25 years the cases of new diabetes dropped. Whats going on . Its working. Were paying attention, making changes. I feel like, people are actually paying attention when we talk. Kind of nice. You know, look, heres what we were saying a few years ago. By the year 2020, half the country would either have diabetes or prediabetic. Half the country. Now were seeing, as you point out, for the first time, there have been fewer new cases of diabetes in this country. Its its great news. Just to give you context 1. 7 million new cases the year before. And now 1. 4 million new cases this year. Not a huge drop but, look, we thought we were right. Were exercising more, were eating less. Were drinking less soda. People are generally aware we need to be healthy. Not as sedentary as they used to be. More healthy choices available. They make a difference. Speaking of healthy choices youve been a proponent of ut cutting sugar out of a persons diet. Talk about that quickly. New studies showing how beneficial that one move, significant for some of us, but that can really contribute to Better Health . Theres no question. What was fascinating about this study, really good news, if you just cut out added sugar out of your diet, just the added sugar, for ten days, were not asking people to change their entire life. Ten days of cutting out added sugar, you could decrease fatty components in your blood known at triglycerides, reduce Blood Pressure and decrease your chance of developing Heart Disease or strokes. Obviously, you want to keep it up after the ten days. The point is, that just as quickly as sugar can have these adverse effects in your body, you can get rid of those adverse effects in your body quickly. What a great time to do it, beginning of the year. Hello. It make as huge difference in term of overall survival and how you feel ct exactly why i wanted to talk to you on this day because people are starting new years resolutions. A good time to start, Something Like this. Try it out, see if you can stick to it. Sanjay gupta, nobody better i like to start the new year out with. Happy new year. You, too. Saw startling rulings from the Supreme Court, samesex marriage, Affordable Care act. Now that were beginning 2016, what is next . Here to break it down, legal analyst and criminal defense attorney. Happy new year. Happy new year. A favorite . Start with army fffirmative act. Is it done . Affirmative action could go away and been around some time. The Supreme Court hasnt really spoken on it in a while but at issue here is whether or not the university of texas can use sort of that holistic approach in which they take race into account when deciding who gets into the entering freshman class at texas. Hmm. Now, Justice Scalia made some headlines a little while ago bringing up his brief submitted that showed research, controversial research, that when you looked at africanamericans in the science field, that the higher performing professionals had gone to second tier colleges or not the top, top, top colleges and the suggestion was, maybe affirmative action is putting in places theyre not going to do as well. What do you think about that . Always an issue measuring discriminatory impact. Do you look at your end data and decide whether or not there is discrimination or racial inequality just based on that data . You know, ultimately when it comes to aaffirmative action its caught in a bit of a gordian knot itself because how do you achieve racial diversity using racially neutral criteria . It may be something that is possible in theory but simply impossible in practice and the Supreme Court hat to make a decision. Usually there to divine with the rule is, here to divine an exception to the rule with affirmative action. Abortion. Tell us about the case. Another point the Supreme Court hasnt really visit ntd a long time. The issue is basically this the rule since planned parenthood is that the government can put restrictions on a womans right to get an abortion, but they may not create what is called an undue burden. I put that in quotes because the Supreme Court has given us virtually no guidance whatsoever as to what an undue burden is. So in the present case you could boil it down to this is it an undue burden if you heightened standards on Abortion Clinics such that citizens in a state have to drive an extra three hours to find an Abortion Clinic . Now, thats an oversimplification. Basically its requiring, nuk number one, that physicians performing abortions be admitted at a hospital within 30 miles. And number two, it heightens the standards of an Abortion Clinic so that it must be equal to a surgical center. Now, the net effect of that is that it less and less clinics will meet that criteria. As a result some have to close and there simply will be less clinics available to citizens of that state. So the question is, is that an undue burden . Access versus avoiding having a chop shop mentality . Right . What the opponents of the increased standard say, we want it to be as healthy and safe for people as possible. Of course. Why we have all kinds of rules and standards for hospitals and medical facilities to protect citizens. Of course, what the proponents of the law argue. The only reason we have the rules to make abortions safer. People who oppose the law say, no, no, no. While it may make them safer, the neglect effect make it more difficult to find a place that can do an abortion, therefore undue burden is achieved. Not to make it better, how to make it harder. Is it a legal issue . A complicated case. How about mary jane. Marijuana making its way through ditch state legislatures. Found fairly significant legal approval on the federal scale. What do you think well see there. As a criminal defense attorney i am grappling with this i feel in the trenches when it comes to the legality of marijuana, because were in a bit of a crisis of federalism, because under federal law marijuana is still illegal. Its a scheduled drug. But when you get out to places like california, legality of marijuana, its not just county by county anymore. Its city by city. When you talk about patchwork legislation, marijuana is this battlefield. Its impossible as a citizen to know where you stand, whether or not marijuana is legal in your state. Even if it is legal it may be illegal under federal law. So we are in a bit of a quagmire when it comes to marijuana legislation and all we can really hope for in the coming year is some clarity. At least as we march, states march towards legalization, at least we hope that we march towards some sort of infounifor whether yea or nay. How do you get that from the Supreme Court . This isnt for us. Its a law. Make it legal, its legal. Make it illegal, its illegal. We cant give you a higher sense . No pun intended . A compelling argument. Right . States traditionally have reserved powers to legislate in this area, but, of course, the federal government has chosen to outlaw marijuana. Marijuana under federal law. So its not just a question of whether states have the rights to legislate in this area. Its a question of the conflict of the federal government preemption against state law. We havent seen a case yet where somebodys bringing it from one state to another, they get caught in the interstate movement, winds ufr a federal case and it gets jammed up. Thats the way well see this get moving on this. All the best. Happy new year to you. To you as well. How about entertainment . And new developments this morning. Service resuming at two Major Railway stations in munich germany that were evacuated on new years eve because of the threat of an isis attack. Following the story for us from london, cnn interNational Correspondent. Reporter good morning. And these threats were relayed to the Intelligence Service from the u. S. And french Intelligence Services. Speaking of an imminent attack on new years eve exactly at midnight, that led to the German Authorities locking down those two railway stations. They say the data they received was very specific, including names and other personal data. They are still trying to find out whether or not these names are real or actually exist. All of that work is still going on. The talk is about 57 people who wanted to conduct suicide attacks in the munich area. They say it was possibly syrian and iraqi nationals who wanted to do this. The political season about to pick up speed. The Iowa Caucuses just one month away. It will be the first time that we have real results from real voters. We cant just mindlessly speculate anymore . Thats right. That is over. And we actually have a real Political Panel here now to give us some insight. Cnn political commentator. And cnn political commentator anna navarro and jeffrey lord. Anna, look into your crystal ball. What is about to happen now . Oh lord alisyn that crystal ball was so hard to read in 2015. Im not sure im going to do a better job of it in 2016. But you are right we are in the sprint. Im very happy to tell you we do have about two more weeks of mindless speculation left. Oh good. You do know that iowa voters, New Hampshire voters, these folks just take their time. They like to look under the hood. And a lot of them, half of them, dont make up their mind until that last week. But certainly we are in the sprint. And i think you are going to see a lot of candidates spending a lot of time. Some of them focused on iowa. Some of them more focused in New Hampshire. Too reasonable. Lets bite off some stuff and chew on it. Jeffrey lord. Tellry why its truer or false. Trump cannot hold on in iowa. The evangelical base too big. They cant handle it they go cruz. True or false or not and why . Possible. Possible . I call that a hedge. Come on. Its 2015. Take a risk. Are you asking me could ted cruz win this in iowa . Yes. The question is what can he do beyond that . And the one thing i would add is Ronald Reagan lost iowa and became president. Rick santorum and huckabee both won iowa and never became president. So winning iowa in and of itself doesnt do anything. This is a long march here. New Hampshire South Carolina and on beyond that. Whoever wins. Even if donald trump wins iowa that is not going to solve anything or settle anything. Winning iowa doesnt mean anything . Its always good to win iowa but here is the thing. Iowa doesnt crown a king but it knocks out a lot of princes. I think were going to remember how big this field is. Are going to get knocked out and then another big polling. 1 or 2 in the polls can mean a lot for the top tier candidates. After iowa were going to see a big shake up and start again. Its good to win but its not everything. I cant trust the next two with this next one so ill stay with you amanda. At the most recent republican debate, where trump looks at jeb and says whos talken, me or you jeb and then she gives a little of that action. Which is what jeb bush did. And this is a new bush. Hes decided to o be the anti trump. And it is going to give him a boost. Yes or no amanda . It is always good to see jeb assert himself on the national stage. I think people were waiting for that. And the less guarded jeb bush is the better it is for him. That said i still think it is a bad idea for jeb bush to define hissed can his candidacy via trump. He needs to be his own man and look forward on the current fight and get in the middle of that. Was that the moment in the last cnn debate where he found his sea legs . Does he feel that he found his voice that night . You know, im seeing a different jeb bush in the last several weeks. Since the very bad debate in boulder, i think that he figured out that thete ricks is part of the job distribution and hes now doing it. If we see that kind of thing on the republican or the democrat side it will be huge. But jeb, i think you are going to see him keep grinding away. A lot of retail politics. Spending time in the early states, New Hampshire and south carolina. And i think you are going to see him doing this the Old Fashioned way. One voter at a time. Amanda . One thing about that, the interesting part about the new jeb dynamic is a rising jeb and a rising Chris Christie makes life a lot harder for marco rubio. In many ways they are competing for the same type of voter and the more they clash, the more those three continue to be competitive with each other makes it easier for cruz or trump to take the bigger lane. Actually i think its the two young bucks that have been locking horns and i think we are going to continue seeing cruz and rubio who are so evenly matched and both rookie senators. Both lawyers. Very different styles. One is poetic. And the other goes legalese on us and i think you are going to see the two of them clash a lot which im not sure doesnt open a space for another candidate, maybe jeffreys, maybe somebody else. What about this one . The chance that donald trump picks a female running meat before the convention . Before the convention . Yes. Possible. Yeah sure. I can see it. Possible. Its possible that alisyn knocks me unconscious in the next 15 seconds. I think sure absolutely. I mean if donald trump wins this nomination or it becomes certain ahead of time that hes going to do it, yeah. Yes thats possible. He could pick carly fiorina. He could pick ted cruz. Oh come on. He cant stand carly fiorina. Hes said over and over again that five minutes of but [inaudible]. Jfk couldnt stand Linden Johnson either but he made him vice president. Donald trump is no jfk. There is one other thing here. I really think this is going to be the year of the outsider again. Election year itself. So whether it is donald trump or ted cruz or whomever, i think the outside is winning. I think that is why donald trump picks on jeb bush all the time. Not because he thinks jeb bush is a threat but because jeb bush is the very symbol of the establishment. And whether its jeb bush or john kasich or some of the others i think that is a real weakness and i think somebody on the outside is going to win this nomination. I think were going to leave it there. Absolutely. Jeffrey. Happy new year. The evolving threat from isis growing deadlier. Downing a passenger plane in egypt. Attacks in paris. Fixodent and forget it. Now in 2015 the number of refugees fleeing war torn countries like syria reached the level of international crisis. Thousands died making dangerous journeys toe scape turmoil at home. Millions more have nowhere to go. Will there be a solution . What is going to happen in syria whats going to happen with daesh . What will the new year bring . Happen new year sir. Wish you all the best always. Lets take a look binto the bal. We have an unreasonable expectation of speed when it comes to dealing with terror or isil or daesh or whatever you want to call it. How do you seal dealing with isis this year. I think you will have to call me skeptical. It is good thing that all the different negotiations are taking place and all the different foreign players are trying to reach settlements but im not very optimistic that is going to go very far. All the outside states, none of these countries seem to agree on the basics. Who are the bad guys . Who are the good guys. Can assad stay . Some say yes. Some never. So because these other groups cannot aware at a common idea of what progress looks like. Any negotiations towards. Unless you have the real framework conversations are not going to go anywhere. O do you see a massive deployment of u. S. Troops . On the ground . I dont see that happening unless a major event in the United States. I think Public Opinion in the United States will remain strongly opposed to putting boots on the ground. And no american president , especially not a lame duck one lets not forget, is going to be able to persuade the American People that we need to put american boots on the ground. So absent and lets hope that never happens. Absent a major event against an American Target i dont see american soldiers going is 2016 the year islam takes on the skorj of islamist extremist in its own faith . Do you think well see it on the state level and the popular level against the enemy . I would argue that is already going on. It will continue to take place. There are conversations taking place among muslim scholars how to deal with this and there are a number of conversations taking place. The community is already grappling with this. I dont think they need a major event or a major calendar event to take place for them to accelerate. But you dont have a massive army. Lets say saudi arabia you could go either way. But turkey you dont have them saying this is our fight. U. S. You can help us. Give us money and but i dont think that is a realistic expectation because the enemy is not a traditional nation state. Even though isis controls territory. It is not as if a Muslim Country is say we are going to go there and fight those people. These guys are everywhere. Turkey they are dealing with extremism within their own country. Isis is already, you know, interests been land fall in turkey. I would pay less attention to political leaders in the world and more attention to civil groups, political activist, religious figures. And if you focus your attention there you will see there is a lot of struggle already going on about how to deal with extremism in our midst. Politicians have got different agendas to deal with. And sometimes they are contradictory to what wed like them to be doing. But in ordinary Civil Society there is a lot taking place that is room for optimism. So we have a lot of time before were going to see real change on the ground. Any chance of a new look from bobby ghosh in 2016 . Not that this wasnt isnt killer. But is there any chance you are going to grouf out the hair again . That was a long time ago. The world doesnt need to see that. It is a successful look. Everybody loves you. Bobby ghosh. Thank you very much. Always. Alisyn. Oh he looks fantastic. Donald trump meanwhile rewriting the rule book for president ial campaigns. How will the president ial race effective congressional races this year . John king is here with his magic wall next. Good morning. We have the key Political Races to watch and also a check at the news here are the headlines at the news desk. Im fredericka whitfield. All eyes on new york city when the ball drops there. Clemson are seeking their first National Title since 1981 but they had to find a way to stop the sooners offense. And they did. They outscored oklahoma 210 in the opening half. Led by the dynamic duo on the ground and watson was the mvp with over 330 total yards and two touchdowns. Clemson stays perfect with a 3717 victory. The other semi final featured the match up with a team who was the only to make it from last season back. Alabama. They were facing Michigan State, the big ten champs. And this 57 yard punt return here for a touchdown, and jacob coker he played the game of his life throwing two touchdowns and bamas 380 smack down of the spartans. In just ten days they play in arizona. Cnn will be there giving you coverage. And the rose bowl is today. That is a look at your new years morning headlines. Alisyn and crazy chris, back to you. So at the stroke of minnesota it officially became an Election Year. Congratulations. Feels good. All eyes on the president ial race but there are plenty of key congressional races to watch as well. How will Donald Trumps rise effect the republican reign in both houses of congress. Here to illustrate it all is cnn chief National Correspondent john king. Happy new year john. Im going to take a vacation can i have all year off . No. This is going to be a busy year fur you. Lets start right now. What do you predict the trump effect will be not just on the president ial race but all the other congressional races. It will be easier in march or april after the primaries but there is no question republicans are worried and democrats are happy right now. You hear Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders saying all republicans are antimuslim. All republicans are the antiafrican american. All republicans are the antiimmigrant and antihispanic. They are painting the Republican Party with the trump brush. And worried that some races that are leaning republican right now. Could go democratic. If trump stays in the headlines. If trump is the nominee they are even more worried. Thaw they do think it is a factor. How big . Ask me in march, april, may. A little of whats going on though is inhouse disorder, right . The gop have made big gains since obama has been the president of the United States. And maybe there is a feeling within the party they didnt get what they were bargaining for in terms of this big movement from blue to red across the map you can show us and yet they feel they dont have anything to show for that so they are angry at their own party. Thats right. Look at the house map here. This is the United States of america. 247 house districts. A big majority. And republicans remember this. Because lets go back to right after obama was elected. The democrat had the majority in 2007. This is after the election in 2008. 2012 democrats get a little back. Not a big sweep in the second term. Only eight seats for the democrats then. 2014. Wow boom. And a lot of people on the coast, which are blue tend to forget this. But america is very red. And that is why the Republican Base is upset. They have this House Majority and then they won the Senate Majority in the midterm elections last time and they dont think they are getting much for it. Thats why you have trump and outsiders talking to the Republican Base saying why do we keep winning but not getting what we want . And that is a big part of the dynamic. There are four seats i guess the democrats could retake. There are more than that. But first just look at it. 34 senate races up. A third is up every cycle. And all the red, republicans are defending 24 seats. Democrats have ten seats to defend. Part depends on the sweep of the president ial election. You have to call that a toss up right now. Shes running for reelection. Democrats tend to win that state and president ial politics. Florida, marco rubios seat. Hes not running for reelection. Thats a toss up. One democratic toss up. Harry reed. The latino vote. The president ial election will influence florida and nevada. And the president ial election will no doubt influence New Hampshire. Those are your toss ups and then you look at other races. This is why the trump effect could come in. In pennsylvania has gone blue and president ial politics back to 1988. A republican incumbent running in that state. Not a strong democratic challenger at the moment but republicans worry if you have a big democratic surge they could lose that one. Ohio, rob portman. You would have to say portman should be the incumbent going in but ohio can go back and forth in president ial politics. Ron johnson in wisconsin going to run most likely against former senator rus fine goeld. Again a state that tends to go blue in politics. So if you have a 15 majority. And i gave you republicans are simply worried in a big democratic president ial year we could lose that. Could have a seven or eight seat swing. That is why they want to be guarded about. And why were having the debates in vegas. Nevada of growing importance in the elections. Harry reed is retiring in nevada. Republicans should be able to win that one. Except you are dead right, chris. Nevada and new mexico used to be swing states in president ial politics. They used to go back and forth. Now you have to say they lean democratic if they are not just blue because of the republican failure, mccain and romney, to get the latino vote. Watch what happens as we go through this year. But at the moment, especially with the trump effect, republicans are very nervous. They have a strong candidate for the senate seat but they are nervous for a president ial year they get overwhelmed by a wave. What happens to all of that momentum . If you look at the data donald trump is a Third Party Candidate t data today as we enter the year and if we learn anything in 2015 we should remember in 2016 that things change. Donald trump as the Third Party Candidate hurts the Republican Party and almost guarantees a democratic victory. If people come out to vote for trump as an independent, should he do that, they are still going to vote for house and senate. And their choices in almost all of those races are d or r. But that is a potential wild card especially when it comes to turn out operations. You also say hey vote for senate. But the trump factor there becomes pretty strange. So what do you have . What is going to be his spirit animal . The teddy bear. What do you see john king . Well hes the human chain saw. How do you attach an animal to that some kind lion. Im going with a liger. A lion tiger. Happy new year. Seems more like a purist so me. So were looking at politics. Were also looking at money. It has been a bumpy ride in 2015. Rising and falling markets. What can we expect in the new year . The Financial Resolutions we should all make now. Coming up. I take prilosec otc each morning for my frequent heartburn because you cant beat zero heartburn ahhh the sweet taste of victory prilosec otc. One pill each morning. 24 hours. Zero heartburn. I love my sister. My heart doesnt see race. Love is love. Happy new year once again you are probably swearing to stick to a healthier lifestyle this year. Join a gym, eat more kale. How about our Financial Health . Joining us our chefs of finance, chief Business Correspondent Christine Romans. First of all happy new year. And i think this is such ab an important for thing us to talk about. All these resolutions and we often say i want to lower my Credit Card Debt and spend less money. But there are more involved things we can be aware of. And you are going to walk us through some of those resolutions we need to be making. Absolutely. Its a new year. New years and your birthday are two times you really look at your money. Two times a year. Mortgage rates here, what are we predicting is going to happen . Especially for those maybe thinking of buying a home . Refieing . Any of that. Mortgage rates and Interest Rates are rising and that is true but i still think they are going to rise very slowly and be well below historical average. So as the nice time to buy a home. If you want to refinance that could be the biggest moneysaving thing you do all year. Many have already done that. A couple of times. Hello. 400 saved per month. And that is something we should be thinking about too. There is going to be more market volatility and saving could be important this year. Market volatility and some of rus a little shy and looking at our personal finances in a different way. Which brings me to gas prices. Weve seen some lows. Do you think they are going to stay . I think you can look at that money not just falling into something else. I think it is really important to take those savings and build your cash reserves, make sure you have 36 month of money on hand for an emergency and really take a look at using that little bit of extra in your Monthly Budget to pay down highinterest Credit Card Debt and get out of debt and start saving and moving forward. And it is important to get out of debt before Interest Rates do rise because then the cost becomes so much higher. But i agree. I think oil is going to be around 50 a barrel this year. Because opec is conting to pump a lot. Iranian oil and still the shale boom at home. All that news for our personal economy doesnt necessarily mean great news for the Energy Sector. No and it doesnt necessarily mean good news for investors because of the volatility in stock markets and the Global Demand being week weak, the u. S. Is raising and some countries no or negative Interest Rates so i dont think you should expect to see big gains in the stock market this year. In the stock Market Portfolio it is incredibly important to be dollar cost averaging, buying stocks every month. Just because were not going to get the returns maybe of the past were still sort of the pretty house on the ugly block has the global economy. We have the time to ask you this looking forward for the others there are probably a couple of people just starting out and thinking okay. I know im hearing my parents tell my e need to get into the market. It can be very very overwhelming. What is the best piece of advice for someone . Absolutely do it. Particularly it is terrifying though when you see the volatility. Take the long view. If you are a young person there is room. Sure. There is room for changes and there is going to be volatility this year. No question. But dont sell when the market goes down. Hang tight. Everybody panics. It is our psychology but you got hang tight. And weather the storm. There are two kinds of people. The kind who think about how they are going to spend their money and the kind who think about how they are going to grow their money and you want to be the kind of person whos growing your money. You want to make sure you are living on a little less than you bring home every month and the rest you are investing and you do that in the stock market and do that with voesmt investments. They have been over the past six years able to grow Household Net Worth because wages arent doing it. And for those that it can and given the volatility and that some sectors are going the feel their own volatility, the Emergency Fund, i think this is something you taught me a lot about. Is having that little extra cushion. What is the best way to start that . It has to be automatic. You have to take it out of your paycheck. You have to almost not see that money and it is so important because about half of all americans cant put their hands on even 2,000 dollars if they need in an emergency. Happy new year to both of you gentlemen. You are a very interesting pairing on this topic. Lets start with the Common Ground. You come from similar positions in terms of your families used guns. You are from hunting families. You know how to use guns. You shoot guns, yet you are on different sides of the gun control issue. Charles starting with you, what do you think lawmakers plan to do about gun control in the coming year . I dont think there is necessarily a plan and i dont think there is necessarily going to be a lot of progress. What ends up happening is the debate runs up against the constitutional structure of the country. The gun debate overlaps with wide open spaces in the country and people who want more regulation are generally in the clustered urban spaces. But because of the way the senate is structured, every state, no matter how wide open, how few people are in that state still have two senators. Brooklyn has more population than all of alaska. But new york state is only going to have two senators just like alaska has two senators. So when you get down to voting on an actual kind of more regulations. The people in alaska who are more hunting culture are going to say those centers will say my constituents dont necessarily want this so im not going to support this. And thats why its been such a challenge in congress to see any sort of action. But then president obama said after the tragedy in newtown he could do what he could and sounds like hes eyeing executive actions on gun control. I think you will see a lot of executive actions especially closer to the end of his presidency and something he wants to be a part of his legacy. But if they really want to get something done on capitol hill i think there are things charles and i and others can agree on. And that is probably taking smaller steps to deal with specific issues. One of those would be Mental Health. I think there is bipartisan support that can be found on dealing with Mental Health and what we should do with Mental Health when it comes to buying a gun or not being able to purchase one if you are committed against your will by a state or by a judge. Those are types of things i think congress could have success on. If they try to turn it into a massive gun control law, it will not pass. There are not the votes there. If you have leadership here and focus on simple issues where you can find the Common Ground i actually think they could probably get something done most americans would support. How about that point of compromise . Everybody after newtown and after the Aurora Movie Theater said we need the Mental Health gun nexus to be dealt with somehow. I do believe there is a Mental Health component but i dont think that you can necessarily take on Mental Health without dealing with the 40 of transfers of weapons that require no background checks whatsoever. Hes saying baby steps. Right. But im saying 40 transfers that dont require any checks that is going to be really hard to deal with the Mental Health piece because it is only dealing with the 6 that do require some sort of background check. You have to combine a couple of these in order to make them actual work. Excellent point. So tackle that. The gun show loophole as it is called means there are private transfers that dont have to be recorded. There are no background check. So with Mental Health how are you going to tackle that . When it comes to private deals, if you come at this from a sensible solution, which is hey, if im buying a gun from my dad in Law Enforcement and weve traded guns multiple times since ive been a young adult, that is an example of where you have a caveat for that i think you can find some Common Ground. There are many people who say if im trading a gun with my neighbor or with a hunting buddy who says would really love that and lets do a trade. That is where you have Something Like that, that does take place a lot. There are a lot of people in hunting clubs for example that have club guns where somebody wants to go use and it they trade with another person that happens all the time. Why is that paperwork so onerous to ask you just to record that transaction . Its onerous because you have to go through a licensed arm dealer. You have to then pay another fee on top of it. Depending on the class of firearm it can be extremely expensive. And in some cases you have to even set up a trust and have each person use that gun on a trust. When you look at the paperwork i would point to the federal government. They have made it so hard to do these things. If they would streamline the process i think you would have a lot of people that would agree on it. But i think even, you know, more common than even maybe gun shows and more common than hunting clubs is intergenerational transfers. You have a grandfather, hes holder. Doesnt hunt anymore. We had guns my whole life. Me and my brothers. And other than the bee bee guns and belt guns we never bought the real guns. There was a grandfather t uncle. So lawmakers dont need to tackle that part what i am saying is just because the father or grandfather was a responsible gun owner that has nothing to do with the person they are passing it down too. I believe that transfer needs to be recorded and there has to be some check on the mental stability and criminal background of the person who is coming into possession of that gun. Right now that is not necessarily the case and i think that that becomes a loophole that gets fuzzy mofor people. Because we want to say it is in my family i should be able to do whatever i want to within my family. Many people are going to say this. It is not a loophole because lar law that says if you are a convicted felon you are not allowed to own a firearm whether it is given to you or not. Sure, but if you are not a convicted felon. If you have maybe some mental instability that becomes an issue. And many of our shooters are not convicted felons. And if we can just focus first off on the Mental Health side of this and build momentum from it, there also is a big trust issue here. You have people on both sides who do not trust the other side and they think they are always going to go for something a step further. If they can just focus on one piece at a time, that could be where we could actually be having conversation next new years about wow, we did some good this year and it made sense. Otherwise we are not going to get anything done at all. Ben, charles, thanks so much at least to get a small point of compromise there. Happy new year. Charmin ultra strong. Its 4 times stronger, and you can use up to 4 times less. Enjoy the go with charmin. Right now in tel aviv, the oo
