Reporter police say farook was an inspector for the depg. He abruptly left the Holiday Party after a dispute, came back, alongside malik. I heard rapid shooting. Boom, boom, boom. Reporter investigators say the suspects came equipped dressed in Tactical Gear. Family members receiving gutwrenching Text Messages that an active shooting was taking place. People shot. Waiting for cops. Reporter this was the frightening scene inside. Are you ready . If youre not cool reporter dozens of employees being led to safety by Police Officers. Try to relax. Try to relax. Ill take a bullet before you do, thats for damn sure. Reporter wounding 17 sure. Prompting police and fbi and s. W. A. T. Teams to launch a massive manhunt. Hours later a tip leading them to the redlands home where she spotted a suspicious looking suv. About 22 miles from the inland Regional MedicalCenter Police engage in a shootout with this black suv. Both suspects now dead. Whats your exact location . Were at San Bernardino and sheddon. San bernardino and sheddon. We see one guy down. One guy in the back of a car. In that bearcat. Reporter Law Enforcement tells cnn farook is a u. S. Citizen and a relative said he and malik had had a 6monthold baby girl. His fatherinlaw was at a loss for words. Why would he do Something Like this . I have no idea. Im in shock myself. Now, chris, there was a moment overnight, in which investigators pushed all the media crews back. We do not know specifically why they were pushed so far away. That ended after a short period. The home is quiet now. But of course, those evidence collection teams will be back at the home, trying to answer several questions, of course, why, what is the motive in this case. And, were there other people who were involved. Police confident there were only two shooters, but was there a support network behind them. Those questions still yet to be answered, chris. And victor, the discovery of those explosive devices at the scene, fuelling a big part of that speculation as well. Thank you for the reporting. Well check back with in just a little bit. A lot of what makes this so unique is how this ended. The shootout. The quick police work with the suv who just happened to drive by as officers arrived at the scene. You saw what culminate were getting more video of that gun fight of people just living around on that street. Cell phone video posted on facebook by a local resident. We vetted it. We went through it its the first time were showing it to you. Oh [ bleep ] [ sirens ] shots rang out. [ bleep ] [ gunfire [ pr ]. Oh, my gosh. Guys just at my house right now. Cops in the yard. [ bleep ]. Guys [ bleep ] no way. [ sirens ] [ gunfire ] my house is getting shot at right now, holy [ bleep ]. [ sirens ] get back. That video tells the story. Not much reason to narrate over it. You can see how drawing it was to the kid taking the video. All the shells that you hear. All the rounds being fired, you have to remember according to authorities, you had at least 21 Police Officers that wound up responding to that shootout. They were first receiving fire. They were taking fire from people in the car. That was the scene that went down here in San Bernardino outside of it that wound up ending this. By all indications, this mass shooting was planned. Why . Well, every detail of it suggests that. Starting from what happened with how they handed off the baby, these two suspects. To the mans mother. The way they were dressed and everything else. So, lets take you through it with cnns jim sciutto. Live in washington. Hes been working this all night long. The latest from the investigation. As obvious as this may seem from the video, jim, as you well know, the investigators are very slow. Theyre not necessarily confused. But they believe theres a lot that remains unknown here. Thats right, chris. Theyre being very careful, certainly, about motive, motivation here. We were in paris a couple weeks ago. It took days to figure out the identities of those shooters there. Were learning details. Sayid Rizwan Farook, he worked at that center. He was at the party earlier in the day. Hes an environmental specialist. And tashfeen malik, 27 years old, were told quoting his family that she was married to farook, a husband and wife, a man and a woman, as the joint shooters, extremely unusual in active shooter situation its in United States. There say third person detained. Police have not established if theres any connection there. Heres one more detail that the l. A. Times is reporting this morning. That is that farook travelled to saudi arabia, within the last several weeks. No sense of the importance of that, but that could become an important detail as we move on. Lets go through other details. He had a dating profile posted which described his personality. He said he was religious but a modern family of four. He identifies as muslim but with an eastern and western mix family values. And he enjoys target practice in his backyard. We dont know the significance of that yet but as you see the details come out, chris, could have significance as the investigation moves forward. Lets talk about the weapons used in the attack. And this is de. You and i talked about this from very early on, Law Enforcement officials saying this is a planned attack. These are ar15s. They can be automatic or semiautomatic. There were also semiautomatic handguns. Again, these are going to be details key as we move on in the investigation. The handguns legally purchased by farook. The rifles purchased by someone else, legally, but that person believed to have no connection to the attack. Thats how they got their weapons. Lets talk about another thing, interesting and different about this. Police believe there were explosives involved. They dinner work. But there were explosives involved. The bag discovered at the site of the shooting at the inland regional facility contained explosive devices rigged to a Remote Control car. A toy rigged to that toy. They found later in the suv the detonating device. Either they didnt use it or it didnt work because of distance. But these attackers, chris, planned to unleash more havoc, not just with their weapons, but with the explosives. Thankfully, they were not used. From the beginning, counterterror officials, Law Enforcement officials, looking at all of these things, multiple shooters, the weapons that they had, this speaks to forward planning. They dont know the motive, but to them, very early on, it didnt look like a crime of passion. But then you have this confusion because he was at that Holiday Party. Theres talk of a possible dispute. You and i covered these things, crimes of passion, very rarely do you have the weapons stashed. You come up with military gear, an escape plan, et cetera. These are hard questions that got to be answered. Theres no question about it. And its been very tough from these guys from the beginning. Remember, they got a call this was at the developmental center. There are people develop mentally valued there. And they found out it was the county Mental Health agency. Who would target them. And then they found out how this man left. Theres so many permutations there. Jim sciutto. Thank you very much. Lets bring in retired chief jim beerman. Hes the retired and chief, im sorry to have to be talking to you under these circumstances, but the nature of the police work here so pivotal to bringing this to a conclusion. You heard what i was talking about with jim there. This started off very confusing. A call to the developmental center, somebody targeting kids with autism. And then you find out its the county Health Department. What are the steps to the police getting their hands around this . The first thing theyre going to find an active shooting. They dont know whats going to be happen. Theyre going to try to figure it out. Theyve bought people who are wounded, completely upset, understandably so. Theyre looking for the shooter. They dont know who that is. As this evolves, theyve got other scene, multiple investigations. At the end of the day, they got a minimum of three investigative sites. Where the shooting originally occurred. Where the suspects were shot in the shootout and then the house and rentals. Very complicated. What was it like for the officer responding at the scene, hes at the home, hes expecting to do a door knock, find out whats going on there, for an suv to go by with matching plates, takes off. All of a sudden, they start taking fire from the car. Probably from the semiautomatic handgun. Take us through the process of responding to a call like that and making those decisions. So, the officers that were surveilling that particular residence are in a very heightened awareness state. Theyre very focused on the possibility that the suspect may be in the house. S will, the suspects drive by and the officers sea adrenaline is going to spike. Theyre instantly on the radio, theyre going to try to get backup in this particular case. I believe they lost them for a short period of time. Some units picked up the suspects and the pursuing officers are going to be very taev attentive. Its not dissimilar to what happened in an athletic situation, you are not going to let them go. Once they got the view of the suspects theyre not going to stop. And now, they have every reason to believe theser the 0 two people who shot up a bunch of innocents. The bearcats. Its the company that is an armored vehicle, you had two in this situation that wound up pinching the vehicle. What was that . Well they knew that they had at least one of the suspects in that suv. What they were trying to do is contain them. As you watched the video of what the officers are doing, theyre using the armor on those vehicles to make sure if they take fire theyre not wounded. Is there also may have been explosives in there, that may have been their best defense. Right. And they would put themselves at risk. You watch them man user around the bearcats. Had a difficult angle to try to expose themselves. They didnt know there were explosives in there. They already knew there were probably explosives. One of the big scenes of confusion, is this a discretion of information. Theyre processing interviews. The families are giving them in thog. Not to say theres anything incriminating in that. Theyre starting at zero. This doesnt smell like im at work and im going to come back and do something stupid. But when you think about terrorism in a situation like this, and theres no question its not being ruled out for them to not stay at the scene and fight it out. But then to flee and stay in the facility, what does it sound like to you . I dont know. Theres a variety of scenarios. Why they were heading back in the purchasuit, in the same genl area. Either they didnt know where they were going or theres a possibility they were going to try to engage the police at the scene or have suicide by cop. You dont really know. Unfortunately, the two people who can tell us are deceased right now, so we dont know. I think the investigators are going to piece this together and come up with a sound, workablew were doing. Theyre desperate to get away. In this case, theyre firing at the officers at the same time. Who really knows what they were thinking. One detail that the local police here keep saying, dont overlook where they got the long guns. It we know they were bought legally by someone else. But how did they get them . You have your own weapons. If they wind up in my hands, youve got a problem. Chief, thank you for joining us. Appreciate it. Again, sorry its under these circumstances, if anyone you know is affected, my thoughts go to you. Thank you. All right. So, we know here that there were a lot wounded. Okay. That number is moving around. We still dont know the degree of those injuries. We know at least 17 people are in two different Trauma Centers. Some got hurt in the panic in get out. We want to tell you their stories. For that we have cnn correspondent dan simon. Hes live at arrowhead Regional Medical center in colton, california. They were on lockdown. There was a threat called into one of the hospitals. They were seen even at a trauma center. These are unusual wounds out of long guns. Tell us about it. Reporter i can tell you, chris, that both of these hospitals are well equipped to handle trauma. Were here at the arrowhead Regional Medical center. I can tell you six patients were brought here. One of them has been discharged. We dont know the conditions of the patients. I can tell you one the of them is a 27yearold woman who works at the county Health Department. He was in that banquet hall. She was shot in the lower back. She told family she was shot while she was trying to protect herself. We have some sound now from some of those members. And she just said, steph, i was shot. And she was, like, crying, and so, i knew she was serious. And i was just like what happened . And she just said she was at a work thing. And the shooters came in. And she was shot. And she was scared. And she said, i just wanted to tell you that i love you. Reporter very dramatic stuff. The victim is 27yearold denise pereza, because she was able to call her family and tell them she loved them, obviously, she seemed to be in okay condition. Over at loma linda, two in fair but stable condition, two in fair condition, one patient being assessed, again, because of the confusion and chaos that surrounded everything yesterday, both hospitals were at heightened security. And security seems to be high, still, at this hour, at both places. Chris. Yeah, and again, with the weapons involved those. 223 caliber shells, the injuries can be very slow indeed. The information is coming. We treat that with the greatest of respect. Dan simon, thank you very much. For context, 14 people taken out in this, their lives snuffed out senselessly. This makes this the deadliest since connecticut. Two people being involved, makes it unusual since columbine. That is going to bring out reaction from all corners. President obama was dealing with this pretty much in the moment. He was being interviewed by cbs when this was going on. During it, his mind took him to a call for tougher gun laws. Urging bipartisan support, closing loopholes. He said he sees that as a way to stop what he calls senseless violence. Take a listen. We have a pattern now of Mass Shootings in this country that has no parallel to anything else in the world. We should not think that this happens with the events and same frequency in other countries. Now, also important to say whos responding here, muslimamerican leaders. Theyve been coming out condemning the horrific act here in San Bernardino. Including one of the gunmans own family members, his brotherinlaw. The question becomes, could this rampage create antimuslim backlash . Were going to talk about that. And i quit smoking with chantix. I dont know that i can put into words how happy i was when i quit. Its like losing some baggage, i dont have to carry it around with me anymore. Chantix made it possible for me to quit smoking. Along with support, Chantix Varenicline is proven to help people quit smoking. Chantix definitely helped reduce my urge to smoke. Some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. Some had seizures while taking chantix. If you have any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. Tell your doctor about any history of Mental Health problems, which could get worse or of seizures. Dont take chantix if youve had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. If you have these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away as some can be lifethreatening. Tell your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel problems, or develop new or worse symptoms. Get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. Decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Most common side effect is nausea. Man, i love being a nonsmoker. Ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. You earn unlimited double miles on every purchase, every day. Just book any flight you want then use your miles to cover the cost. Now, thats more like it. Whats in your wallet . We are here in San Bernardino, california, certainly, following breaking news. A very active investigation. After the deadliest mass shooting since newtown, connecticut, in the United States. 14 people murdered. Now, officials are not ruling out terrorism. But word that the suspects were muslim, of course, fuels suspicion that it indeed terrorism. So what do Muslim Leaders say about what happened here . Cnns john vause talked with hassaem alush. He spoke with the brotherinlaw and heres what he had to say. Clearly right now, everybody is search for a motive in all of this. I know you have come out and condemned this attack. Clearly, weve spoken to the family, weve heard from syed farooks brotherinlaw, what more can you tell justice. Well, of course, we dont know the motives, the family is devastated like all americans today. Filled with sorrow and mourning and we express on their behalf heartfelt condolences to all of the families of the victims, and injured. To pay for whatever is responsible to pay the price. The family is devastated like all people. Is this the time to express solidarity among all of us, americans, rejecting whatever the motive might have been, theres absolutely no justification for such horrendous behavior. Reporter have you had a chance to speak with the family of saeed farook, and we heard from the brotherinlaw saying no one expected this. He just spoke to him a week ago. What else had the family been saying to you . I spoke with them. Theyre as shocked as anybody else. They have no clue this could happen. This is the suspect is married. Has a 6monthold baby. You wouldnt expect you know, they have no reason what made him snap. Its just workforce, workplace related . Mental, wristed ideology clearly unknown to us . All they can do is share with everybodys soul and prayers that this is over quickly. And the pain and suffering of all of these families is eased. Reporter youre very quick to come out and hold a news conference, even had syed farooks brotherinlaw to talk about this. Explain to me why you took that action. Well, because were living in a very difficult time. Theres a lot of struggle there. Theres a lot of sentiment fueled by pundits here and there. Trying to blame a whole community for the acts of a few. Again, were still mourning as a nation after what happened in Colorado Springs by someone who is also responsible for his act. Not the christian community. Not the american community. Same thing, we felt there was a need for fellow americans to know that all muslimamericans share with the rest of the country, our soul today, our shock, our agony for what happened. It was important for the family. They wanted to make sure that people know, how they felt. How devastated they are. And insisted being here. Seen though theyre going through their sorrow as we speak now. They drove to the office to speak to fellow americans to say were all victims today. We stand united in our sorrow, and the only way to come through this is through our solidarity. John vause, cnn anchor, getting a key interview there. But, look, theres no denying the suspicion. As soon as word came out that police believed they had the two shooters and they were identified as muslims, this did wind up setting up as what feels like another potential terror attack. Now, investigators are slow on that. Why . Because it is early. They dont know. And when they went to the family, they couldnt get any definitive information from them or closely noted associates what was going on with these two. We do know that the story doesnt add up to to be a spontaneous Workplace Violence. Why . Because what they did with their kid, they gave it to the mom and gave a bogus story about a doctors appointment. And the workplace device. Not something that you can come up with quickly. The question is the motive and where are investigators headed next. Well take you through it. Toto the Nations Capitalut to support an important cause that can change the way you live for years to come. How can you help . By giving a little more, to yourself. I am running for my future. People sometimes forget to help themselves. The cause is retirement, and today thousands of people came to race for retirement and pledge to save an additional one percent of their income. If we all do that we can all win. Prudential bring your challenges® announcer this is cnn breaking news. Were in San Bernardino, california, the site of the deadliest mass shooting in the u. S. Since newtown, connecticut. Investigators very much on edge after identifying two muslim attackers, very much concerned there could be more involved here. What we know so far, 14 murdered. 17 injured. The perpetrators so far, the two suspects, dead. They are a man and a woman who supposedly were married. And they were killed in a spectacular police shootout. Now, the question of why this happened is certainly hanging over the situation. We do know that one of the attackers was at a Holiday Party right up the street from us at this Convention Center but left supposedly after a disagreement. There are now questions about whether this shooting was an angry reaction of what happened there. Or much more likely, something preplanned. Why . The way they were equipped with long guns and semiautomatic handguns. Tactical gear, explosive device. A bogus story when handing off the 6monthold child to the grandmother saying they had a doctors appointment. There were also details learned overnight. The explosives at the scene. How were they made . How were they detonated . The explosives were rigged to a Remote Control car that was found in the suv when the suspects were eventually tracked down. These attackers certainly came prepared. We have to make that point because it feeds into the investigation. They had gotten two of the guns legally themselves. Two of the others were also bought legally. These long guns as im calling them, assaulttype rifles. But they were bout by somebody else. How did these two get somebodiess guns. Theres certainly thoughts for prayers. And the death count continues to rise from these types of Mass Shootings. The big consideration, as we get back to new york, alisyn and mik, if this were a terror attack, why did the two leave the scene, instead of staying there as often the case, waiting for authorities to do as much inhuman activity as possible. And while they fled, why did they drive into the area. Well track those down. Well be back to you shortly. Do we have other headlines to tell everyone. Russian president Vladimir Putin delivering his state of the nation speech focusing on terror and booting russias economy. He called on International Cooperation to defeat terrorism. And warning turkeys leaders that it will, quote, regret downing that isis bomber. All of this in the latest video of a beheading of a man they claim say russian spy. Meanwhile the United Kingdom launching its first air strike. Sources say the uk launching air strikes in the east. The spotlight now on the German Parliament which is on track to step up its own military offensive against isis. Oscar pistorius will be going back to prison, perhaps, for as long as 15 years. South Africas Supreme Court of appeals upgraded his original conviction from culpable homicide to murder. This, of course, in the death of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. Pistorius was released in october after serving one sentence. He was under house arrest. This is a real head scratcher. An alleged bomb plot uncovered by police who say five fifth grader, thats right, fifth graders were behind it. Police say they had written plans to set off explosives at a local high school. Its not clear how School Administrators were able to discover the plot. Those students were arrested. They were later released into their parents custody and as you can imagine, they have been suspended from school. Okay. We have learned that the two shooters in San Bernardino were married. Why would this husband and wife with a baby at home do this . We will explore who they were, next. They rushed into my front door seeking shelter. Saying theyre shooting. Theyre shooting everybody. Ive smoked a lot and quit a lot, but ended up nowhere. Now i use this. The nicoderm cq patch, with unique extended release technology, helps prevent the urge to smoke all day. I want this time to be my last time. Thats why i choose nicoderm cq. Police say one of the shooters in San Bernardino left an office Holiday Party after a dispute. And returned with his wife, both of them heavily armed. So, was this Workplace Violence or domestic terrorism . Lets bring in cnn contributor and criminologist casey jordan. Casey, thanks so much with being here with your perspective. Youre leaning towards the Workplace Violence theory, why . Well, because everything about it points towards that. It was a soft target, but it was a very specific target. If you want to terrorize people you dont go to the office of the county employees. You go to a big box store, a mall, a train station. From the very beginning were i heard that somebody walked into a conference room, started a dustup, left and came back, that wasnt the cause, that was simply the trigger. He had been preparing for it like so many disgruntled employees do. He had the explosives, the guns, he had the driver. He wanted them to know it was very personal that he was unhappy about something and they were going to suffer for it. There were a few things to complicate your theory. Mainly, his wife came back with him. So rarely have we seen multiple shooters in these mass shooting events. I dont know if weve ever seen a husband and wife team, what does that tell you . Well, we call in the bonnie and clyde syndrome or massive disciple. You have one who thinks they have been wronged, on their team and will do anything to help them get revenge. With that, its like a Chemical Reaction between the two of them. They find strength in each other. I can do this if shes going to be on my side. Im not wrong, she agrees with me. Shes like, they cant do that to my husband. So you end up feeding each other psychology for revenge by having that partnership. Fact that they had planted explosives at the location of the office party. That means it wasnt just a moment where he was set off. No. That means was plan. That sometimes lends itself to the terrorism theory, that was in the works . Accept the columbine did the same thing. They had explosives at the scene, they didnt go off. Holmes in explosives. In the apartment, they didnt go off. Their getaway was also unusual in terms of how it normally plays out with Mass Shootings. Thats true. Often the mass shooters kill themselves at the scene or they were killed at the scene by police. Were these two trying to get away . I think they were. This is where the terrorism thing fell apart. It seems so tactically sophisticated and yet it was sloppy. If it was a numbers game. Theyd kill fewer than half the people that were shot. The fact of the matter was, they were so vindictive about getting, causing mayhem. They went back and checked out the carnage, to know they had gotten even. They had gone back to the apartment, who does that . That is when the chase began. Who goes back to their home . They had been so focused towards the act they didnt do much prepare for the getaway. You have them shooting out the window. Not striking anybody and then, of course, dying for their cause. The cause, of course, was getting even. I will agree there could be components that they were wanting us to be afraid and terrorized. But there is no, as far as i can tell so far, political or religious are ideology extremist thinking that was driving this. So, in your experience as a criminologist, what would confirm the work violence theory, if they told he was passed over, what will be the evidence be . You will find out probably with hr that there was some problem with his employee. Maybe he was disciplined or maybe he was harassed at work for being middle eastern or having that heritage. And that they did not protect him from harassment. Or he got a bad review. There will be something. I hate to go back to the massacre of the reporters on air just a few months ago, but that was a disgruntled employee that had been festering for years. We may never know. It could be one person in that room. But it was a roomful of county personnel and thats the key. Casey jordan, thank you for your perspective. Thank you for being on new day. Lets go back to San Bernardino, where chris is live on scene. Chris. Alisyn, there are two major aspects of dealing with this locally in San Bernardino, one is the scene that played out right through the city streets. So many people exposed to that. Homes being taken on with ricochet fire. And then what investigators are looking at in terms of this community and who did these two people know and who might have known more. We have a local reporter on scene and who knows whats going on in this community. Well get their take, right after this. Imagine watching a shootout like this take place. 20 Police Officers chasing an suv. Gunfire going both ways. We have someone who did see it. The Riverside Press enterprises own uncovering the shooting as it unfolded. How do i say your last name . I appreciate it. Tell me this, youre not used to seeing things like this. Nobody is. These are heaviest Assault Rifles being used. 20 officers. Tons of rounds. Take us through the sounds and sights. This is definitely the most intense incident ive ever reported on. I arrived on scene shortly after 11 00 at the inland Regional Center. Right up the street. Yeah. And i was on the scene at the corner of waterman and orange show road where families were staging, they were accounting for employees that were there and bussing them out through a nearby church. How did you get the call about a shootout . My editor called me. I was actually on a lunch break. I cover breaking news on the mornings. My editor called me. They had a tip so i headed out there. What did you think it was going to be . We had reports of mass casualties. Thats what i understood the incident to be. Once i got there, i definitely understood more. Somebody was picking up scanner traffic or Something Like that . Scanner traffic and officers were hearing a lot of rounds and just reporting that. Obviously, people make assumptions about rounds hitting things. Ma did it sound like from your perspective . Well, i couldnt hear the gunshots. You didnt hear any of them . No, no. We keep hearing from people who were like, theyve never heard anything like that, so many rounds being zmra s being. What did you hear . Well after the second shooting involving the police, i went out to that scene. I got kind of stuck in the residential neighborhoods. They had closed off traffic in a number of streets in the area, while another person was another suspect was unaccounted for. Right. That was the earlier report that someone fled the scene of where the suv was, tracked them down. Wound up not being connected to the event as far as police know so far. Did you get to see the suv . I did not, no. And what did you hear at that location after that was all done . Well, i was talking with residents in the neighborhood. And they were all giving me their own accounts of hearing the gunshots. And looking outside their windows. And staying inside. And being directed to stay inside their homes. Safety first no question. Right. But a question that will grow out of this, what does it mean about how safe people feel and how they wound up being suspectses. One of them a muslimamerican. The other one apparently, his wife. Were still learning about that relationship. What was their take on why this happened and what it means to them . Well yelled, sosterday, when information was unfolding, people were confused about what was going on. But i think the first things on their minds, were their loved ones okay. When i first got to the scene, thats what people were more concerned with. Even though they received Text Messages or calls that they were safe, i think the first thing was getting to them and making sure theyre safe. But as tell the audience because there was an explosive device in there and the bomb squad could go in. Even though there were deceased inside, they couldnt do any vetting. What did that mean for people waiting . There were definitely a lot of people waiting a long time. I talked to one man, whose wife was in the building, she was okay, not shot. But she was wait throughout for hours, going from place to place, as far as being in a place where they could reunite. Thankfully, they were texting each other. They could communicate that way. But in a situation, until you see them and feel them, and all youre dealing with is the fear and panic. Thats the consensus i felt. I talked to a number of people, you know, the first thing their loved ones did is text them or call them. Even still, they had to see them, just to make sure everybody was okay. According to police, one person was shot and still texted home. Got in touch with family saying i was shot. Im okay. Listen, im glad youre okay. Thank you, chris. I know you had a long night. I appreciate it. In terms of specifics, there are a lot of unknown heres but there is context. We do know that 14 people being murdered makes this the deadliest mass shooting since newtown. That there were two shooters makes that the first time that happened since collumbincolumbi. Was this terrorism. What works in favor of that . Well give that to you coming up. So, investigators are trying to find a motive behind that massacre in San Bernardino, california. Was it terror . This is particularly interesting its rare to see two people carry out this. Lets talk to former fbi agent john gilliam. Its horrifying that we talk about these. But we need to know what we know, what could be, such an interesting point that there were multiple shooters in this. We know that statistics dont show that. Thats a very rare occurrence in u. S. History. I think the last time we saw this is darin kleebolt and his active shooter situation. Theres one thing that pushes this to one point to another. The fact that a female was involved is probably one of the biggest thing. In 2012 in vegas there was a male and female involved in a shooting that killed several police. What do you make of the fact that she was involved . Well, i mean, this could go so many different ways. The potential what i like to focus on in this is the things that we know. And the possibilities where they could lead. When you do an investigation, you have a certain set of puzzles or pieces of a puzzle that youre putting together. And a lot of times you can assume what the other pieces may be until you find them and click them in. You have to be careful with those assumptions. So, when it comes to the fact that theres a female and a male involved with this, weve seen that overseas, when it comes to islamic attacks. Thats the first thing that kind of pops up. But you know, after talking to some of the psychologists, we can also see a man thats, you know, hellbent on retribution . Some kind of an attack. And he gets his wife spun up into it as well. Especially if theyre part of an yol ideology that holds on to it thats whats so key, as were putting the pieces together this was a workplace shooting effectively, or was it terrorism . Theres no doubt that hundreds of people evacuated were terrorized in the hours and minutes this played out. 14 dead, 17 injured. To you, does it feel like there are links to terrorism . Or does it feel more like in a workplace shooting scenario . Well, for me, theres so many Different Things that are adding up here that point to ideological terrorism. We have yet to see that specific link. But the fact of, you know, who these individuals are, what they believe in. The tactics that they used. When you start to add that picture together, regardless of the psychological state, you start to see somewhat of a picture of terrorism. We have to remember that terrorism is a tactic. Its not a group. Its a tactic. And that is a tactic where you take violence instill fear or intimidation for political change. Thats where i think were going to have to look at specifically what their motivation was. And final question for you, you talk about tactics, what is from a tactical point stood out to you how the police handled this situation as it unfolded yesterday . I think its across the board now that we need to train regular officers better. They need better equipment, heavier vests. Ballistics helmets. All the training doesnt need to go to s. W. A. T. We see s. W. A. T. Again and again and again in this zone. The other thing that i saw gets repeated over and over again, they fill all the forces at one plac place 21. We need to know how to do blocking forces and send in an Assault Group like in the military. Works a lot better. And then you can also manage your people better. Jonathan gilliam, were going to call on you again. Following a lot of news this morning. We need to get to it right away. Announcer this is cnn breaking news. To viewers in the u. S. And around the world, you are watching new day. Alisyn and mic are in new york. Were in San Bernardino, california. Because not since sandy hook, connecticut, have we had a mass shooting. 14 murdered. 17 others injured. There are two different Trauma Centers. We dont know the extent of their injuries. We do know this, just down the street from where we are, theres a Regional Health center for people with developmental issues. In the middle of it theres a Conference Center. Since this happened, police have been flying all over San Bernardino. There are so many aspects. This is what they know. There were two shooters, they believe they have them both, have them dead. One of them a man 28 years old. One of them a woman, who they say both of them opened fire on county Health Department employees at that convention down there. It was another curveball for investigators. Why this group . Why there . Well, we do know again, the shooters are dead. They were killed if a dramatic shootout with police. It is believed they were married that would also make this unique. The male involved was at this company party, a Holiday Party, a christmas party. He was at it because he was at the party, he left. When he came back, he was with the accomplish and heavily armed. Theres a lot of preparation here. They were wearing Tactical Gear. Semiautomatic weapons. Long guns as well. There was an explosive device involved. The that leads to the question of motive was it something at the workplace, terror or could it be both . Cnn has complete coverage starting with victor blackwell. Now, he is in red lanlands, california, thats where the shootout began. We know that bomb technicians late into the evening scoured the home where at least one of the shooters lived, looking for any explosive there. We know they also searched a car outside. Thoroughly looking through that. The allclear was given late into the evening. But we know that this investigation is just beginning. This neighborhood effectively shut down. As investigators try to answer the question, primarily, why. Reporter breaking overnight, two shooters in San Bernardinos mass shooting identified. Police say the shooters, 28yearold Syed Rizwan Farook and 27yearold tashfeen malik, was shot dead in this black suv at the end of a massive manhunt. Overnight, a s. W. A. T. Team sweeping the redlands home for explosives. Until we have a motive it or a clear base on that motive, i just do not want to weigh on only that right if you. We have not ruled out terrorism. Reporter the massive shootout began at 11 00 a. M. At the Regional Center. Police say farook was an inspector for the department. He abruptly left the party along with ma lick. I heard rapid shooting, boom, boom, boom. Reporter armed with ar15style weapons and handguns, they came dressed in Tactical Gear. Family members receiving Text Messages. Shooting, in my office wait for cops. Reporter this was the frightening scene inside. If youre not cool, if youre not cool reporter dozens of employees led to safety by police officer. Try to relax, try to relax, ill take a bullet before you do, thats for [ bleep ]. Reporter the shooters killing 14, wounding 17 more. The pair prompting police to launch a massive man hunt. Hours later a tip where they spotted a suspicious suv resulting in a wild police chase. About two miles from inland regional Center Police engage in a bloody shootout with this black suv. Both shooters now dead. Mats your exact location . Were at San Bernardino and sheddon. San bernardino and sheddon. One guy down, and theres one guy in the back of a car that we got in the bearcat. Reporter Law Enforcement tells cnn that farook is a u. S. Citizen and he and malik had a 6monthold baby girl. His brotherinlaw is at a loss for words. Why would he do Something Like this . I have no idea. Im in shock myself. Im very sad that people lost their lives. Victims. And i wish a speedy recovery to them. And again, i am in shock. And investigators have said this home is clear of any explosives. But we know that evidence crews will be back here to collect any information, any handwritten notes. Electronics, to try to answer the questions of why these two went on this shooting spree. This massacre, and who if anyone else, went with them to help them pull it off, chris. Certainly the key question, victor. If just waking up right now, a lot of people are met with the lament of it happened again. There were two yesterday, obviously this on a much bigger scale. There have been 355 Mass Shootings in this country already. No question, thats a cause of concern. But energy is best served right now understanding what took place here because it was unusual on many, many levels. The most was how it ended. A dramatic shootout all caught on television and cell phone video of an suv flying through the streets being followed by some two dozen officers and vehicles. Ended again in just a hail of gunfire. We have gaiten video of this gun fight between the shooters and police. So you can see what it was like for the people in this community to live through this. For the officers to deal with it. Heres cell phone video taken by a resident of what happened. [ bleep ] [ sirens ] oh, [ bleep ] guys shots rang out. Holy [ bleep ] oh, my gosh. Guys, at my house right now, cops in the yard [ bleep ] holy [ bleep ] guys [ sirens ] no [ bleep ] way. [ gunfire [ my house is getting shot at right now. Holy [ bleep ]. [ sirens ] [ gunfire ] stay back. You cant forget this part of this experience for this community, to be living on these streets and a hail of gunfire. Thats not what San Bernardino is used to by any stretch of the imagination. Its no stranger to crime, but nothing like this. And, of course, then you do have the questions fuelling investigators right now, they are confused and how the scene wound up that way. If this was terrorism, why did the two leave the scene instead of trying to fire it out and kill themselves as often happens. Why would they stay so local . Why would they drive deeper into the city when pursued. There are a lot of questions here. Were fortunate to have cnns National Correspondent for security jim sciutto on the case. Jim, lots of questions. What are you tracking . Chris, were getting a very early picture. A detailed picture of the suspect so far. The main suspect, sayid Rizwan Farook. He had actually worked at the Regional Center where the shooting took place. In fact he was at the party earlier in the day. He left and came back armed and ready to carry out this rampage there. He was there. And tashfeen malik, were told by islamic relations quoting his family that she was his wife. Another person detained, no connection yet confirmed to the shooting there. Its a profile that farook actually had posted on a dating website. Is this what he said at least about himself that he was religious, moderate. Family of four, identifies as a muslim but with eastern and western family values. And this is interesting, as youll often see on these profiles. Personal details, he said he enjoys target practice in his backyard. We dont know the significance of that. But small details like that could have significance going forward. Lets talk about the weapons found at the scene. They were armed to carry out violence. Two. 23 caliber quality rifles. An ar15 rifle, a lot of cops have it. A lot of soldiers have this weapon. Semiautomatic. They also have two semiautomatic pistols. Both of those smith wesson. The long rifles purchased legally by another party who at least at this point police do not believe were involved in this shooting. Lets talk about explosives. Final detail here. Because when they founsd a bag n the site of the shooting. Inside, they found explosives rigged to, can you believe it, to a toy. A Remote Control car. Fortunately, it wasnt used. Whether the signal didnt work or attempt to use it. Clearly they had the intention of causing more mayhem. Thankfully, it didnt happen. One final detail, chris. We could say there were no writings found in the bag. You might find a manifesto. Some clue as to the motivation, that is still lacking. Thats why police are reluck tants to say was this a disgruntled worker, or possible lynch to terrorism . Fact is, they dont know right now. Was it both, jim. I know there are tons of leads. Lets bring in retired chief jim bueermann. Hes the retired chief of redlands and president of the Police Station foundation in d. C. I appreciate you being here. Agency i said to you earlier, this is not how i want to get your perspective. But thank you for giving it to us. Did you know anybody involved is everybody safe in the bueermann home . Yeah, were safe. I know some of the officer. We know that one took a hit. Took an injury. A San Bernardino officer was wounded. Not seen as being lifethreatening. Should make it through. Thats the good news. Right the way this ended, were used to stieeing it on tv and movies. From a Police Perspective its about as frightening for an officer as you can have. You have an officer in redlands at the home of the male suspect. Hes expecting a door knock. Heightened alert but then the suv goes by with utah plates. Everything changes . Everything changes. A high level of awareness and alert. Theyre looking for this guy. All of a sudden when the officers see thats the suspect vehicle. Then their adrenaline is going to go through the roof. They get very focused. Sometimes, you can get tunnel vision. The pursuit is on. Youre not going to let that guy get away. Especially what you know. You get that kind of tunnel vision. But in this case, they knew that these folks had killed a whole bunch of people. As soon as they start taking fire from that vehicle, they know this is not going to end well for somebody. Thats a critical confrontation. Not only do they know these are murderers using long serious guns, two ar15 weapons, but they start receiving fire from the weapons, that changes it also . It does. In 1980, we had an incident after a bank robberies, the deputies got killed in the mountains where they were throwing hand grenades and shooting sat them with long rifles. This is in the back of an officers mind. Youre trying to keep your caren 0 the road. Youre trying to stay up with the person youre pursuing e ii trying not to get shot. Theyre probably taking rounds in those cars. We didnt get a look at those police cars but it wouldnt surprise me that many of those are bullet ridden. And the hail of gunfire speaks to the pack mentality that they get into that they want to stop this as as soon as they can . Well, they know that people in that vehicle or outside that vehicle had already killed people. Theyre going to do everything they can to neutralize that threat. Not necessarily kill them. But the hunt is certainly on. Wound up ending in spectacular fashion. Something new to the audience Lenco Bearcats that make those vehicles. Youre dealing with militarystyle weapons. They wound up pinching the suv. What was going on there . Well they were trying to make sure that the person even though its shot up, you can still drive a car not on rims. You see the officers in a turret, theyre trying to get a view, inside the car, to see whether or not that person was moving. They could see that person was armed. They could see that person had Assault Rifle across their chest. They know this thing is highly volatile. They know in the back of their mind theres a possibility that there were explosives in there. Py that had turned out to be a dummy explosive. They didnt know at the time. The big question is who knew . Who else knew . The plus side is look at what they had. The Tactical Gear. At least two long weapons that came from someone else. We keep saying quickly, well, they were bought legally also. But thats a species analogous. Sure they were bought legally, but how did these people get them . How did they stay . They didnt want a shootout with the cops but then they went back to that house. So if they wanted to flee, why did they stay local . We dont know. There may be evidence inside the house that tells the officers why they did that. This is not uncommon. If they thought they had gotten away that they had something at that house that they were going to take with them. Uncommon for a typical suicide mass shooting. Absolutely. They were up to something. I dont know if they figure out exactly what they were doing. I think in the coming day, and weeks, the investigation is going to uncover a lot of these answers that we all seek. Not the least of which what do the neighbors know. I would be very surprised if the neighbors didnt say in hindsight, there was a lot of suspicious activity going on. This is why this notion of see something, say something. Conflicting situations here, well, he left the party angry, but he comes back with something that seemed so premeditated. If nothing else, the explosives. The bogus stories to the grand mother about having a doctors appointment. The 6monthold baby. For so many of us when you have life that comes into your life, it incorporate chchanges everyt. Not here. This is amazingly fast for a place in San Bernardino, a place that went through hard times, bankruptcy. These are officers that step up. For people willing to do their jobs that risk their lives, this could have turned out tragically. They were clarifying the vehicle that everybody else was running away from. Thats exactly what cops do. They run into it when everybody is running out. Were going to give you much more from San Bernardino. The investigation very, very fresh. And its going in a lot of different directions. However, this being the second mass shooting in the same day, 355th of this year, this has got the politicians talking about why this happened, and more importantly, what we can do to make it stop. Stay with us. A penguin loaded a toy car onto a racetrack. Zoom it took off. Going faster and faster, and twisting and turning, until finally, it stopped. Right in our driveway. So when my asthma symptoms kept coming back on my longterm control medicine, i talked to my doctor and found a missing piece in my asthma treatment. Oncedaily breo prevents asthma symptoms. Breo is for adults with asthma not well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Breo wont replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. Breo opens up airways to help improve breathing for a full 24 hours. Breo contains a type of medicine that increases the risk of death from asthma problems and may increase the risk of hospitalization in children and adolescents. Breo is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on a longterm asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. Once your asthma is well controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop breo and prescribe a different asthma control medicine, like an inhaled corticosteroid. We also know that 17 people were rushed to two different Trauma Centers. We dont know the full range of injuries but we do know so far they have survived with sounded with just the worse chaos you could live through. We have cnn correspondent dan simon live at arrow hehead medi center. Hes in colton, california. Dan, what do you know . Reporter well, chris, obviously, people have very serious injuries. Six people were taken to this medical center. We know one person has been released. We havent gotten the full range of injuries. I can till one person, a 27yearold woman was shot in the lower back. She was shot while lying on the ground and trying to protect herself. She was able to communicate what happened to her sisters. And she just said, steph, i was shot. And she was like crying and so, i knew she was serious. And i was just like what happened . And she just said she was at a work thing. And the shooters came in. She was shot and she was scared. And she said, i just wanted to tell you that i love you. Reporter well, the victim is wedgeyearold denise pereza. Her husband just posted a facebook message which said shes going to be in the hospital for several more days. And theyre trying to assess whether or not she needs surgery. Right now there say bullet that is lodged in her abdomen. In terms of the other hospitals, the loma linda medical center, i can tell you that five patients there are. Two of them in critical but stable condition. Two in fair condition. And at last check, one patient was still being assessed. And, chris, of course because of the confusion and the chaos that surrounded the events yesterday, security was put on a heightened alert at both hospitals. And even at this hour, security remains high. Chris. And, dan, the sensitivity is appreciated. Just because somebody has survived doesnt mean that theyre out of the woods. We do not know the extent of injuries as dan simon was just pointing out. At least one of the patients is dealing with a being lodged there. Theres going to be a lot of surgeries. Theres going to be a lot of changes. Keep that in mind as we have those in our thoughts and prayers. When you here that it was the most murdered since newtown, connecticut. That is involved two killers in a way we havent seen since comcolumbine. Itspecter of how do we deal with it. Lets go to cnn, with more on what the president had to say about this. Joe, the president was reacting realtime. He was doing an interview with cbs, he was learning about this and he had things to say. Thats exactly right, christian. The president prepare for a prescheduled interview with cbs news. Had to push that back just a bit, while we got more information, we do know he was briefed on the situation by his Homeland Security advice, lisa monaco. And he pushed the discussion pretty quickly over to the issue of gun control. Listen. There are steps we can take to make americans safer. And that we should come together in a bipartisan basis at every level of government to make these rare, as opposed to normal. The second time in a week that the white house has responded to a mass shooting. The other one was after the shooting in colorado. Just a few days ago. Now, some of the president s comments have been directed at members of congress. He may get a chance today to talk to them directly to express his concerns. Hes supposed to meet with members of congress to talk about the issue of criminal justice reform. Chris, back to you. All right, joe, obviously, the issue of guns is one that is often mentioned during these times. Not enough after theyre over. But just as much comes down to something thats similar in all of these cases. Somebody with an inhumane main and deranged desire to kill, columbine, newtown, and now San Bernardino. Ive covered all of these. And often they have very different circumstances. What can you do to stop what happened here and elsewhere. We get into it ahead. After a dvt blood clot. Mind when i got out of the hospital what about my family . My lil buddy . And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. Then my doctor told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. This holiday season, gewhats in the trunk . Nothing. Romance. 18 inch alloys. Get up to a 2,500 bonus for highly qualified lessees on select audi models. Announcer this is cnn breaking news. We are in San Bernardino, california. Theres a lot of information flying around. So, let me take you through what we do and do not know. Right now, we can say this, 14 people have been murdered here. 17 more are in the hospital with varying degrees of injuries. That makes this the second deadliest mass shooting since what happened in newtown, connecticut. The fact that there were two perpetrators here makes it the first time weve seen that since columbine. What else do we know . There was a man and a woman involved here. Said to be married. That they were both killed in a shootout with police. Where did it start . Right up behind us up the street, in this regional Conference Center, there was a Conference Center in there as well and what was going on was a Holiday Party for the county Mental Health agency. The male suspect involved worked at that agency. He was at that party and left after some type of altercation. Was what happened thereafter an angry reaction . It doesnt seem that way but its not completely ruled out by investigators. Because when that man came back, he was with his wife, and supposedly had had Tactical Gear, long weapons, and potential explosive devices. We have new details emerging overnight about these explosives. They were found at the scene, wound up delaying which was ago goi agonizing for the loved ones to find out if loved ones were inside. They found part of explosive device in the suv that the officers eventually intercepted. It was certainly an explosive device. They didnt know if it was effective or not. Then the semiautomatic handguns they were carrying, as well as assaulttype rifles that they were carrying and certainly used on people inside that Conference Center. These are all facts that the investigators have been able to confirm for us. And now, it comes to what do you do about this . This was the second mass shooting just yesterday. The 355th of the year in 2015. Were going to hear from lawmakers now, theyre going to say we have to do something about it. For some, that mean morse ls mo. Look at the cover of new york daily today. Theyre calling out for sympathy. But the question is, well what is caring going to mean . Should it mean tougher gun control . Its very divided in this country. People look at a situation like this, alisyn and mik and say what law would have changed this. The handguns they bought were bought legally. The two handguns were bought legally but not by them. Who bought those guns and how did they wind up in the wrong hands . Chris, youve given us a lot to debate so lets talk about that in what as chris was saying has become it feels like this futile ritual. President obama reiterated his call for gun control. Are stricter laws the answer or another solution . Here to debate an oped columnist for the New York Times charles blau and ben ferguson. Thanks for being here. Charles, california has the strictest gun laws in the country. Weve learned all too often crazed mad men and shooters dont abide by gun control laws. Right. Why call for more . Well, first, you have to get to the problem, right . So, if you have upwards of 300 million weapons in this country. Right . You have in any given year, 33,000 roughly 33,000 people who lose their life to gun violence. About a third to homicide. The other twothirds are suicides. Those are its own issues. If you just take those numbers, you realize that a fraction of 1 of the guns, even if every gun, even if every kind of death was a separate gun because its not because of yesterdays Mass Shootings, its a fraction of 1 of the people, of those guns, being used in a bad way. We see most people, not most, like overwhelming majority of these guns are not being used in any bad ways. We want to encourage people to continue to do right by the guns that they have. Right. Why did the president call for more laws then . Because this is, again, what we realize, it only takes a tiny fraction, because we have so many, it only take ace tiny fraction for them to be used in a wrong way in order to wreak havoc in a community. So, how do we get, to those few guns being used in a bad way to be out of those hands . And i think there are things that are happening there that are there are proposals on the table that could help in that regard. So, ben, i want to get your take, because the fact is clearly something is not work here. As chris was saying, this is the 355th mass shooting. And that means four people or more shot in an incident this year. Somethings not working. We have to fix it. I agree, but when the president comes out yesterday before there had even been unsingle press conference and pushes a false narrative if you would just do gun control that somehow this would not happen. This is is as unrealistic as him koum coming out and saying this is probably muslim terrorists who accomplished this. We had no idea who the people were. We had no idea what guns were used. We didnt know if they were bought legally or illegally or convicted felons. For him to come out and push gun control before he knew anything, before any of us knew about the guns used, im sorry, its irresponsible. We want to think if we passed a law that somehow this would have. Happened what happened in california. Lets look at what happened in paris. Paris some some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. Yet, people were able to get ak 47s that are illegal. And you cannot buy them. Sure. Let me say this go, quickly. What would the president of the United States pass what law would the president of the United States pass yesterday, ill say this to charles, to somehow stop this shooting . If were going to blame guns for this instead of looking at the person, where they got married, where they traveled and all the flags around them, tell me what law you would have passed that would have made this happen . I dont think there is a law. Charles, you were saying you do think there are solutions. Right. I think the wrong question is the question that people ask for advocating for no laws at all. Which is to say, what would you do to stop this particular crime . Theres often not an answer to this question directly. Then why did the president excuse me, i didnt interrupt you. Dont do that. So what you have to say, this is unacceptable. The level we have is unacceptable. How do we start to whittle away at the numbers . Youre not going to solve them all. Yes, but how do we . You start with the idea that, number one, most american, overwhelming majority of americans agree that we should have universal background checks. 40 of all weapons are acquired without a background check in this country. Thats a lot of different ways. Some of this off of market sales. Also generational, just translates, your uncle gives you your first gun when youre 12. We dont know yet. There are a lot of questions. Go ahead, ben. Youre dealing again, would backgrounds checks have had any impact on this attack in california . The answer is, no, you have two individuals that apparently were not convicted felons who bought a gun legally. Two of the guns were bought legally. The other two guns that he did not purchase or they did not purchase, came from somebody else. How would you stop that . We dont even know if theyre stolen at this point. We done dont if they let him borrow them. We have no idea. But to push gun control, saying i dont like guns. I dont want anybody to have them. You talk to anybody on the street who doesnt like guy youre talking to the wrong guy. I grew up with gun us. We slept with gun racks over our beds. I lived in a rural part of america. Make sure you understand, dont ever do that. Dont ever just try to assume that people are who want some level of gun control dont have any idea of what guns are, have never owned a gun, that is not right. Let me finish i want to say im going to go ahead. Im going to finish. My brother is also he sells guns. Hes a gun collector. He sees it up close, this idea of people who can buy and sell without any sort of gun laws. Thats actually what we dont want. What we have to do, in the long view, say, most people are responsible gun owners. We want to make sure that we keep all of the guns, more of the guns in the hands of responsible people and not in the hands of people who are not. Dont try to guess that people who want some level of gun control are oh, i hate guns. Thats crazy. Just quickly here. What im saying is this, president obama yesterday, its very obvious, when you come out and push that gun control somehow would have made us safe. When the reality is, we have no idea how gun role would have affected any of this. Same with in paris. If youre a terrorist domestic or connected to isis or al qaeda, to imply if we pass this law, somehow this is going to change is incredibly unrealistic looking at the situation. Heres the other thing, if youre a law abiding citizen up to the point of yesterday which appears this guy was like, why would a gun law have stopped him from doing this when we know we can buy guns legally. We hear your point, charles, ben. Thank you so much. Well be obviously debating this throughout the program in days to come. Indicative of the passion on both sides. We have look to at other held lions. Russias president Vladimir Putin. And putins address happening on the heels of a newly released isis video showing the beheading of a man allegedly admitted to be a russian spy. In the wake of the countrys worst Mass Shootings since the assault in newtown, connecticut, three years ago, investigators today digging for answers, attempting to figure out what motivated these two people, a husband and wife, to open fire at the social Services Center during a Holiday Party at in San Bernardino, california. Congressman adam schiff represents a district that is not far from San Bernardino, hes also the Ranking Member of the house intelligence committee. Congressman, thank you for joining us on new day. What you have learned, if anything, in the past hours what is behind the mass shooting. I had a preliminary briefing from the fbi earlier this morning. At this point, we cant rule anything out. We dont know what the motivation of the shooters may have been. Certainly, were devoting all of our investigative resources to determine exactly why they embarked on this horrendous attack. At this point, i think its too early to rule any possibility out. So youre not leaning in a domestic terrorism or Workplace Violence direction . You know, i think its certainly possible you could have elements of all of the above, or some combination of motivations. The reality is, that we simply dont know at this early stage of the investigation. Were exploring to determine if there are any links to International Terror or terror organizations. We have seen isis applaud the attack. They havent taken credit for the attack. And thats quite a bit different. And we are exploring any possibility that it was related to any International Terror. Or whether it was Workplace Violence. You had some combination of motivations. Congressman, youre a member of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task force. You study Mass Shootings. And gun violence. These guns were purchased legally. What would have made a difference here . I dont know, looking at some of the initial public reports of what the main shooter or the male shooter was like in the workplace, some of the employees that have been interviewed say there was nothing that would have given them any suspicion of any violent motivation against his coworkers. Or any kind of radicalism. And, so, i dont know the situation is where people would have seen things that they could have or should have reported. I think the important point, though, visavis the gun situation, is that there isnt anything between the gun situation. Some gets the weapons legally, some illegally. Some have mental issues. That doesnt mean that you dont embark on what you can. And if we made it difficult for people mentally ill to get access to firearms or for people to get extended ammunition clips so they couldnt kill as many people in a shooting spree, that would help. So there are things we can do even in a particular case if that would have been sufficient. Congressman how about if we made it more difficult for suspected terrorists, and people on the nofly terror watch list . But on tuesday, your colleagues in congress for some reason, declined to even vote, on this act that would have kept people from who are on the terror watch list from buying a firearm in this country. How is that possible . You know, thats a good question. Its a complete nobrainer. I cant imagine why anyone would oppose this, except for the fact that the nra is against this. A very powerful organization. A lot of members in Congress Live in fear of nras lobbying power. How do the nra even be against this . Whats their logic . Whats their argument . I dont understand it. If you look at the common sense gun measures that weve been talking about for years, like a ban on extended ammunition clips, these things, or universal background checks are supported by the majority of nra members. Of their own membership. So i dont understand it, it doesnt make any sense. Its a terrible indictment of our own system that something that the country wants even in the case of this very powerful organizations that their own members want. We simply cant get accomplished we cant accept this. I was part of a moment of silence on the house floor, just a couple days ago, because of the colorado shootings. This has become a ritual in the house. I would much rather have motions of silence on the floor. Congressman, great to get your perspective. Thank you for being on new day. Lets get back to chris in San Bernardino at the scene. What does this mean about gun violence for them. Were going to talk with a city leader about what they believe needs to be done after living through it. Today people are coming out to the Nations Capital to support an important cause that can change the way you live for years to come. How can you help . By giving a little more, to yourself. I am running for my future. People sometimes forget to help themselves. The cause is retirement, and today thousands of people came to race for retirement and pledge to save an additional one percent of their income. If we all do that we can all win. Prudential bring your challenges®. Obviously cant how are you gonna hide this . We asked real people what they thought of chevys holiday deals. Thats awesome. I like it. I love it. Thats a really good deal. I think its actually a great deal. I think this feels really good. Holiday gift, christmas gift. This would be the best any gift. Bar none. Can i have the keys . Wrap up the deals and wrap up the year in a new chevy. Find your Holiday Bonus tag and get 2,500 total cash allowance on select Chevy Malibu Limited vehicles in stock. Can i take it home today . We are here in San Bernardino, california, the sight of the deadliest mass shooting weve had since newtown, ct. 17 murdered, 14 others in various states of jury in local hospitals. What does this mean for the community . You are looking at cell phone video what these people had to endure on their streets. They are also living with the knowledge of what was done here at this Holiday Party a christmas party. Now 14 dead. 17 more hurt. We have president and ceo of the San Bernardino chamber of commerce. Sorry to meet under these circumstances but it is an important conversation. How is the community doing . What have you been hearing . Actually chris, the community is very brave. And weve handled tragedy before with major fires in our area. They come together in the time of tragedy. People are blowing up buildings all over the country, including paris. So San Bernardino is a Strong Community that people come together. They have been calling the chamber wanted to help, wanted to bring food if they can. They are not out there scared to death flailing their arms and saying oh my god, our community is being shot up. They are wanting to help. And they are doing business as usual. Which is remarkable given the conditions that they went through. They also got an amazing demonstration of their policing. How fast these men and women worked on the scene and how quickly they were able to get to the suspects. Im very glad you said that. Chief jarrett is an amazing leader. And they were. They were johnny on the spot. Along with their team. We absolutely have a strong Law Enforcement team. Fire people. They are amazing. Along with the people in the community. They should be commended and im glad that you said that. We are not a weak community. Were a Strong Community. And the chaem received numerous calls yesterday as i said wanted to help. And businesses were open. Of course around here in this area they were closed. They have to lock it down. The investigation still very raw in many levels. They are trying to figure out who knew. And it leads to a relevant question for you. When we use the world community. You are now going to go through some thought about well, what is the community . What is the relevance of who did this . And what they represent in terms of religion where they are in the community, how are you dealing with that aspect of it. That is what i want to know. I want to know who, why. Why would somebody go out and take peoples lives . I dont understand that. There is a lot of whacko people out there that obviously want to kill. And if they want to kill they will do it. Regardless of how. What the means are. Do you care whether the suspects were muslim or not . Is this relevant to eo . No. No. If somebody wants to kill somebody, they will do it. And speaking of religion we do have a lot of wonderful churches in our area. Pastoral groups that come together of all different faiths. And we have a strong muslim group in our Cal State UniversitySan Bernardino. And people think they can do things and get away with it. That is my opinion. My opinion. Thats why i have you here. There is a whole dialogue going on in the country. And when these suspects names came out and they were muslims, its watched by people. As a local leader it doesnt matter what faith they are to me. I would like to know again why they did it. Whether they were upset because they didnt get attention at the Holiday Party . Or whether or not they were terrorists or the reason. Nobody has the right to take another persons life in my opinion. But whatever the reason we need to find out and set peoples mind at ease. And i think that if people i think that if people want to take another persons life, they are going to do it. Whether they have gun os are bombs or a knife or their hands. You dont think you are a law away from making Something Like this not happen . No. I think people will do it regardless. People always go to the means as you are saying. They use guns. How do we stop them in getting guns . We dont discuss how do we discuss whats in peoples hearts and thats important. I spent ten years on the school board. I found out a lot about bullying. Bullying starts as the young child wsm e need to nurture our children to be careful what they say. Look at whats happening on cyber space or whatever they are doing with their with their telephones. Thank you. Early in the morning and i havent had any coffee. But also i found out that principals were bullying their teachers. That was horrific. Im not a person that stays quiet. I was one of the older members of the school board and i let it out loud and clear. But you are speaking to a can you culture how we treat one another. And that is going to be a big part of it. As you say this community is strong, hopefully it holds together through this. Thank you. This i for the opportunity. There is a lot of news this morning. Were processing whats happening in San Bernardino. Lets get right to it. This is cnn breaking news. To our viewers in the u. S. And around the world you are watching new day. Alisyn and michaela are in new york. Were in San Bernardino, california. The site of the deadliest mass shooting since new town, connecticut. Two of the shooters have been brought to the ground and killed after this very dramatic shootout. 14 were murdered just up the street from where we are now. 17 others injured. There are two different hospitals. Varying degrees of injuries. The big question now is why did these shooters open fire . Vegtsers are on it. They are running in different directions. We do know this. The shooters again were killed. Officers believe those were the two. And they are dead. There were earlier reports of a third shooter. That is no longer a real element to this. They dont believe there is a third that. Said investigators are still very much trying to figure out who knew. Were there more involved in this . Police say just before the shooting the male suspect involved was in a fight at that same Holiday Party. But is that what motivated this . There are a lot of questions. When he returned with his accomplice, now known to be his wife, they were very planned. They had Tactical Gear, long gun, short gun, a potential explosive device they had. So what was the trigger in this case . Was this the motivation . Or was this something that had been planned for quite some time . Were going to talk to the mayor about it in a moment but lets take you through the story in terms of what we know and whatter still waiting to find out. Victor blackwell live in redlands, california, where police drought down the shooters and it was really a man hunt. Victor tell us about it. First, in just the last few minutes investigators are now returned to this neighborhood. Weve seen several go back inside the home of at least one of the shooters here. We know that overnight bomb technicians worked to give the home the full all clear of any explosives. They searched a vehicle outside. But we know as we give you a live look now of the investigators going in and out, that the search for evidence to answer the question you posed at the top of the broadcast, why . And if there is anyone else, maybe someone supporting the two that carried out this terrible massacre. Two shooters in San Bernardinos mass shooting identified. Say yesterday Rizwan Farook and his wife were shot dead in this man hunt. Until we know the motive or really have a clear, something clear evidentiary based on that motive, i just dont want to weigh in on that right now. We have not ruled out terrorism. Reporter the massacre began around 11 00 a. M. The Health Department was having a holiday at the time. Police say farook was an inspector for the department. He left the party and came back alongside malik opening fire. Rapid shooting. Boom boom boom. Armed with ar15 style rifles and hg handguns. They came equipped, dressed in Tactical Gear. Shooting at my work. People shot. In the office waiting for cops. This was the frightening scene inside. Ready . Dozens of employees being led to safety by Police Officers. Try to relax. Every try to relax. The shooters killing 14, wounding 17 more. Prompting police, fbi and s. W. A. T. To launch a massive han hunt. Hours later a tip leading authorities to the home where they spotted a suspicious suv resulting in a wild police chase. Police then engage in a bloody shootout with this black suv. Both shooters now dead. What is your exact location . Were at San Bernardino and sheddin. One guy down. One guy [ gunshots ] in the back of a car. A relative says he and malik had a six month old baby girl. I spoke to him like a week ago. His brotherinlaw at a loss for words. Im very sad that people lost their life. And the victims out there, i wish speedy recovery to them. And again, i am in shock why he could do Something Like this. I have no idea. I am in shock myself. Obviously the shock from the family. But investigators are here on the scene. And their expectation is that there will be something inside the home. Maybe some writings. Maybe a laptop, electronics. Something that will give them answers to the questions that so far have not been answered about this massacre. This is a very complex investigation, victor. Thank you for taking us through that element of the reporting. Investigators basically running in two directions. One, it does seem pre planned for so many reasons. It doesnt feel as though it could have been a spontaneous workplace type incident. Earlier in the day there was a cover story. Remember these suspects had a six month old child together. They have a bogus story about the doctors appointment. That falls into the conflict what happened at the end of the shooting up the street from us. Which is, the two didnt stick around to finish the fight and they didnt apparently have anything to blow themselves up. The explosive device wasnt seen as being effective for that. And yet when they fled the scene they stayed locally. To that is very conflicting and doesnt line up as the typical terror situation. Now, what is understood by everybody is that this was a horrific thing to live through, literally through the streets of San Bernardino you had gunfire blazing out as police moved very quickly and bravely to stop this situation. Local residents were literally getting out their cell phones and capturing moments of it. We have some we just obtained now. Here it is. Its the [ bleep ] po po. Oh [ bleep ]. [ sirens ] damn. Holy [ bleep ] guys. Shots rang out. Holy [ shots fired ] oh my gosh. Guy guys outside my house right now. Theres cops all over the [ bleep ] yard. Holy [ bleep ]. I just got shot at my in any [ bleep ] yard. No [ bleep ] way. My house is getting shot up right now. Holy [ bleep ]. [ siernsrens ] stay back. Imagine being one of those officers receiving fire from people you know are murderers, who you know had long guns and still continuing the chase and making sure they didnt get away. Brave and quick police work by any estimation. So who were they chasing and what was going on here . Were getting new information right now. So glets to cnns National Security correspondent jim sciutto. We are told by multiple sources that this shooter was not known to the fbi prior to yesterdays shooting. That by itself not necessarily unusual. There are lots of people Law Enforcement doesnt know about until they act. But key here, he did not have a history known to Law Enforcement. So lets talk about what is known now about the shooters. Main shooter, Syed Rizwan Farook. He worked at the inland Regional Center. In fact he was at the Holiday Party. E left after a possible altercation. Came back. This is key. He came back with a woman, believed to be his wife. Tashfeen malik. They were married were told by sources. Extremely unusual an active shooters situation to have one, a man and a woman, and two, a man and a woman who are married. One of the many unusual details. There was a third person detained. No believed connection to the shooting at this point. Lets go on. Farook had a profile on social media. Here is how he described himself, a religious but a modern man, family of four. Identified as the muslim but with eastern and western mix of family values. In social profiles people often put up details about themselves. He enjoyed target practice in his backyard. One of the details. We dont know the significance but could become significant as we move forward. We have two long rifles as we said from the beginning. A. 22 Assault Rifle. Always two semi automatic handguns. Those two handguns purchased legally by farook. The two long rifles purchased by someone else who police, at least at this point, do not believe was involved in the shooting. And one more thing here now. They had explosives on them. They intended it appears to carry out more mayhem. Interesting detail. The explosives rigged t, it appears, to a toy. In effect a roemt control car. The remote found in the suv. The presence of that shows they intended to kill more perhaps. One final thing. There were no writings found in the suv. Often times with shootings like this you find a manifesto. They dont have that yet. And chris, multiple people ive talked to about this. Counterterror officials and people briefed say at this point they are not ruling out any explanation, any motivation. Whether it be terrorism, Workplace Violence or some combination of the two. Chris. Jim, thank you very much for the new information. There is no question investigators are running in a lot of different situations. If this man left the country that is going to be a very important consideration. Their big question right now is who knew . Where did they learn how to make this explosive device. There are a lot of roads to go through in terms of suspects but also know what they are dealing with in terms of reality which is 14 lives taking, 17 ors in various states of injury. This community had been hit hard. Mr. Mayor, sorry to meet you under these circumstances. I know this effects you deeply as a servant of this community. How are you this morning . Im well. Good morning. Were dealing with the situation as best we can. Police department, fire department, neighboring Law Enforcement agencies brought to bear the full force, if they could. They responded effectively, as fast as they could and secured the situation. They were able to diffuse it as quickly as possible. Our hearts go out to the families and the victims. We want them to know well continue to support them anyway we can. Of course Public Safety is our first priority, has been and will continue to be. That said we want to make sure were not paralyzed by the Violent Crime thats been committed in our community. How are you processing the situation right now . The why is still ongoing. It is an accurative investigation. Well leave that to Law Enforcement, the experts that are unraveling it at this time. I dont believe it is appropriate for us to try to speculate as to whethat the mot was. That will certainly probably come out as time passes. And make a big difference in terms of your community. If these two wind up being an isolated couple of, you know, basically nuts who are just up to inhumane actions for their own reasons. That is one thing. If it winds up that this is part of a bigger effort to bring death here, it is going to be a different challenge for you. You are absolutely right. It will be. However, communities throughout the United States are dealing with violence and crime. Right. It is an issue that will not go away overnight. And we continue to strive to improve the quality of life in our community. We will continue to work towards those efforts. Our police department, fire department, all the departments in our Community Came to the rescue as quickly as could. We couldnt ask for a more effective response. They are highly skilled. They did their job. They did it with deliberations. They met the challenge. And they will continue to do the best they can. Couldnt ask for more from the First Responders no question. One of the painful details in the situation is that because of the explosive device up the street they couldnt process the scene right away, even though they knew there were deceased inside. Whats it been like dealing with the families. Circumstances require they have to wait. But such agony for them housmt are they . I had an opportunity to be at the Staging Center waiting for those who are victims to join their families. They were certainly relieved when they found that their family members were safe and secure. Those that were unfortunate, certainly, the desperation and despair they feel, we feel that for them also. Whether do you tell people in that situation mr. Mayor . I think they need to rely upon their faith. They need to draw close to their milies and recognize whats the priority and that should be the families. And when you were dealing with those moments where they just had to wait, even though they werent getting messages from their loved ones and it was a little bit of the nefltable. How difficult is space and time for you to negotiate, as someone they are looking to for answers and consolation . Certainly want to be compassionate during those moments and that is what we try to express. Our departments came together. We tried to make it comfortable for them. We tried to provide food and we tried to help them realize that we were there to support them. Well continue in that effort. And when it comes to the conclusion of this and the investigations find whatever they find, the responsibility then becomes, well, how do you prevent it from happening again . Do you believe you are a law away from making Something Like this less likely. You know, those are national issues. Locally we do the best we can with the resources that we have. And i think it would be better if state federal governments often were more aligned in those efforts. We continue to struggle with some of the lack of resources. But we will make every effort we can locally to give our community a feeling of being safe so they can continue living their lives. We certainly had the First Responders on the job. But i wonder as the mayor of the place, do you believe that a situation like this is about what is in someones hands . Or what is in their hard . Well you know it is not the gun that kills. It is the shooter that kills. Right. And, you know, the conclusion leads you to believe well, it winds up being both but it is about what those motivations. You are saying that is where your focus is. Well certainly. And we will leave that up, as i said earlier to the pd and fbi, sheriffs department. It is an active investigation. And San Bernardinos been through tough times. A bankruptcy. What is needed that people can do to help . You know they want to help. I think its important that the media continues to cooperate and follows any destructiirecti instructions. I appreciate the cooperation so far. And media has been very tenantitenant i ten attentive and not compromising efforts going on. How many more could be involved. They are still going down those roads, yes . Again, chris, it is not appropriate for me to comment but to leave that up to the chief for him to reveal that information when he feels it is appropriate. I understand. Certainly a situation exercise caution. Mayor good luck going forward. Sorry to meet you under these circumstances. Well take a quick break here. Having just spoke to the San Bernardino mayor. Again we now know for sure that in San Bernardino this is the deadliest shooting weve had to deal with since new town, connecticut. 14 people murdered here. 17 more are injured or in the hospital. Sanjay gupta is at the hospital where some of still be treated. Well get an update after this the keys to this home belong to mark and alissa anderson. They bought the place four months ago on what was arguably the scariest day of their lives. Neither has any idea what the future holds for them. But they bought into a 30year mortgage anyway. Call now we are following breaking news in San Bernardino, california. We know 14 people were murdered. 17 more injured. Taken to two Trauma Centers. The situations are still fluid. Just because they survived the main violence doesnt mean they are out of the woods. Cnns dr. Sanjay gupta is live at arrowhead regional in colton, california. What do we know, doc . As you might guess, some significant injuries. There are a couple of fairly good sized Trauma Centers in this area. Overnight there were two in Critical Condition there. And here behind me, six patients still remain in the hospital. They are being assessed. We are hoping to get some better idea of their conditions a little later this morning. I can tell you we heard from the sister of one of the patients whos here behind me. Her sister called her from the scene after she had been shot. I want you to listen to this chris and ill explain a little more after we hear this. And she just said, steph, i was shot. And she was like, crying. So i knew she was serious. And i was just like what happened . And she just said she was at a work thing and the shooters came in and she was shot and she was scared. And she said i just want to tell you that i love you. A call made right at the time chris of this shooting. We know the womans name is denise. Shes 27, shes in the hospital behind me. She threw herself underneath this desk and tried to shield herself with chairs she said. And then she felt it go through her back. She was shot in the lower back. Shes expected to recover okay. But there are so many story likes this, chris. And were hoping to get a better idea from the patients exactly what they went through and how they are going to do over next few days. And that is a really relevant consideration. As i was saying in the intro to you sanjay, just because they made it through doesnt mean they are out of the woods. When you are dealing with a. 223 caliber, just tell people what kind of damage that can do and how it creates complications for hours if not days to come. You are right. You talk about penetrating injuries. And you can predict to some extent what type of injuries those are going to cause in the body. When you have a significant blast component to the injuries as well it can become a little more unpredictable. You can have damage or injury to organs to blood vessels that may be further away from the entry point or exit points. So that is part of the reason you have got to monitor patients for even longer periods of time. Even people who were not directly injured by bullets, just the blasts sometimes from these type of weapons can cause injuries. So there are people who have to be monitored that were in the area. Patients have to be monitored longer. You have to look for the types of complications. Again, these patients, several of them are expected to recover well. Many of them in fair condition. That doesnt mean they are going to get out of the hospital any time soon, chris. Sad but true. Sanjay thank you very much. At least one man reported he was injured, not by the bullet but just by the wall splintering from the force of the bullet. So were going to have sanjay stay on that and these peoples struggles. San bernardo represents the second mass shooting in a week. Even worse, since the sandy shooting we hadnt seen this many People Killed and havent seen two shooters since columbi columbine. Going to talk to some personally affected by this. [vet] two yearly physicals down. Martha and mildred are good to go. Heres your invoice, ladies. A few stops later, and it looks like big ollie is on the mend. It might not seem that glamorous having an old pickup truck for an office. Or filling your days looking down the south end of a heifer, but. I wouldnt have it any other way. Look at that, i had my best month ever. And earned a shiny new office upgrade. I run on quickbooks. Thats how i own it. Were in San Bernardino, california, the deadliest mass shooting since newtown, connectic connecticut. Concern there could be more people involved, we do know this. 14 people murdered. 17 injured and the perpetrators are dead. The suspects, a man and a woman said to be married, they were killed in a very dramatic shootout with police. We do know where this started but we still dont know why. The male suspect was at a Holiday Party up the street from us at the Conference Center and were told he left at the disagreement. The shooters then returned with weapon, Tactical Gear and explosives. They also left their six month old aldehyde with their grandmother saying they had a doctors appointment. Six month old child. A remote was in the car to a toy car in the suv. The attackers came prepared. Authorities say. They had Assault Rifles. They had semi automatic handguns. They were ready and equipped for a rampage. No question about that. The question is why they did it. Was it spontaneous . Or was it planned as it appears . A take a look at this. The cover of the New York Daily News calling out lawmakers who express sympathy but dont act on that. And every one of these the debate is how do you stop the next . Absolutely. And were going to talk about that right now. The mass shooting reigniting the debate over gun control in the country. Joining us now is a father at the forefront of that debate. Allison parkers, the virginia reporter gunned down oun Live Television along with her camera man. Her dad since then has maeds it his mission to try to stop gun violence and he joins us now. Thank you for being here. It is so terrible to have to talk to you about yet another sickening shooting, particularly given how fresh and raw your daughters death was to all of us still. We all still remember, of course those horrifying and haunting images. But obviously it is more painful. The most painful for you when you hear of another story like this. Can you tell us how you are processing it . Well allison, i wish we were seeing each other again under different circumstances but im afraid we are going to have to be welcoming new members of a club that no one wants to join. And you know i know exactly what these families are going through. I know the defgs that you feel and the anguish. Devastation. Vastation that y feel and the anguish. Devastation. When your daughter was killed you vowed to make ending gun violence your life mission. So in the this threeplus month since that horrible episode what have you learned about trying to stop this . Well, you know, people say that a lot of politicians merely suggest it is a Mental Health issue, which certainly it can be. But the commonality is that there are too many dangerous people. And people that shouldnt have guns have access to them. But, you know, we have the ability to make change. In virginia we just came through an election that i was involved with and we elected a sensible Gun Legislation political leader to the virginia senate. So it can be done. But it is you know, it is going to take people around this country to just say, you know, weve had enough. Thoughts and prayers, you know. Thats great. But that is not going to bring the victims in San Bernardino back. It is not going to bring allison back. We have to have action. And i think we are moving the needle, if the election in virginia is any different. But it is going to have to come from people exerting pressure on the politicians to do something, to take action. But mr. Parker, here is the vexing part. California has the strictest gun control laws in the nation. These guns and the san bernardo case, appear to have been bought legally. Two of them may have been transferred illegally. We just dont know yet. But they were bought legally. If this can happen in california, what do you say to the people who say the madmen will always be able to get their hands on a gun . It is like wearing a seat belt. A seat belt is not going to save your life in a horrific accident but it is going to give you better chance. So, you know, doing nothing is you know, were going to continue to see this regardless of where, you know, what state has the tougher gun laws. But if we can do something and toughen the ability you know, just universal background checks. Closing gun show loopholes. Those are steps that are proven to work. Again, it is not going to save everybody. But it is going to save some lives. And that is the most important thing. And that is what were trying to achieve. And we will achieve it. On black friday, there was this record that was broken for the most background checks for firearm purchases, ever. In other words, people are scared. People are scared. They want they believe they need to own a gun. It feels like the world has gone mad. Whats your answer to those people . Well, the answer is it is not more guns. I mean the nra and the gun lobby would have you believe that, you know, lets have everybody Walking Around and be engaged in a shootout. Lets have teachers and lets have open carry on campuses. And i cant imagine a world, if that is the world that were coming to . You know, isis and we dont know if this is a terror attack or not. But if im isis and im looking at this im saying we dont need to be going to america because they are self destructing on their own. That is not the kind of world that i want to live in. Most people in this country, even the majority of nra owners or members, they agree with sensible Gun Legislation to try and at least stop some of this from happening. Investigators are not ruling out terrorism but they are not ready to say that is what it is here as well. So why is there suspicion . The names of the two suspects indicate they are muslims. So they went to the shooters family. And the shooters family had no sense of what was going on. How do we know . Cnns john vostz talked with the executive director of the los angeles chapter of the council on American Islamic relations. He had a take on what this means for muslims in particular. Clearly sereverybody is serg for a motive. I know you have come out and condemned the attack. What more can you tell us. You have heard from the family and the brotherinlaw. We dont know the motives of course. And the family is devastated, like all americans today, filled with sorrow and mourning. And we express on their behalf their heartfelt condolences. To all of the families of the victims injured and killed and just pray for whoever is responsible to pay the price for it. The family is devastated, like all people. And this is the time for us to express solidarity among all of us americans and rejecting whatever the motives might have been, you know, there is absolutely no justification for such horrendous behavior. Reporter have you had chance to speak with the family of syed farook . What else have the family been sayi ining to you . I spoke with them. They are as shocked ags anybody else. They had no clue this could happen. The suspect is married, has a 6 month old baby. Ultnt expecyou wouldnt expect. Mental illness, twisted ideology. It is really unknown to us. All they can do now is just share with everybodys sorrow and prayers that this is over quickly and the pain and suffering of all of these families is eased. You were very quick to come out and hold a news conference. Even had farooks brotherinlaw there to talk about this. Explain to me why you took that action. Well, because we are living in a very difficult time. There is a lot of islam phobia there. Antimuslim sentiment fuelled by pundits trying to blame the whole community for acts of a few. Were still mourning as a nation after what happened in Colorado Springs by someone who is also responsible for his act. Not the christian community. Not the american community. All american muslims share with the sorrow today. Our shock and agony what happened. It was important for the family. They wanted to make sure people know how they felt, how devastated they are. And they insisted to being here. Although they are going through their sorrow as we speak now. But they drove all the way to be at the office and so be with fellow americans and stand with all victims today. To be united in our sorrow and the only way we can come through is through our solidarity. Boy, there is so many things michaela that make this tough to categorize into a neat box. A multiple shooters. We havent seen that obviously since columbine. Husband and wife team. The fact that nobody describes him as an extremist or having muttered anything sort of extreme. The family is shocked. This is a tough one for investigators. And the fact that the wound is still open from Colorado Springs. The wound is still open from paris. The wound is still open from seeing that reporter shot down on the air. Ive heard from so many of my friends in Southern California enough is enough. When are we going to see this stop . Again . That is the refrain were hearing. And the muslim thing matters too. Just does. Are all muselims bad when muslis do something bad . No. But at the same time when you and it feeds the phobia and something that requires discussion and time and context and that is in short supply when people are angry. Sure does. All right chris. How do we deal with the increased anxiety that we or someone we love might be a victim of a shooting or of an act of terror . We bring in a good doctor. Jodi gold. I want to talk to you about the anxiety. There is grief right now for all of us that have connections to an bernardino. To any of us that have connections to somebody lost their lives or injured in a shooting. It is understandable to be anxious. How do we be realistic, yet live within this new world order . It is really challenging. I think it depends on who we are talking to, because people are affected in different ways. We dont all handle things the same way. And now that were teeing domestics shootings on a daily basis almost. Whenever there is an attack, there are the survivor, the people we are seeing in San Bernardino. And they clearly are going to have a different type of reaction. And now thousands of the bye standers, people that were connected. With family members or visited this residential center. And all of us that watched this coverage on our screen that is going to have an effect on us. And it is different where you are. But those who watched it on tv vicariously are also going to have an effect. None of us want to let fear win. Yet how do we stay informed and yet turn off the fear of life. Because there is great beauty in the world. We have to understand why this type of anxiety is insidious. Terrorism is unprovoked. Were unprepared. We have a hard time our guards are down. In general when were anxious, the way we handle it is we handle it by trying to take control. You are afraid of getting in a car wreck, you drive slowly. Afraid of failing a test you study more. That begs the question of how do we handle this . It brings up fear of unknown. We dont have control over it. So the question is what can we do to reign in our anxiety and try to take control of the situation . What is the answer . There is no simple answer. One thing we can do is reassure ourselves we are taking all the steps to be careful. Ive noticed with adults recently, that what adults try to do, especially with the International Terrorism is they try to learn about the situation. Stay informed. The idea if you are knowledgeable and truly it is distorted sense of security. You cant protect yourself but i find we are all trying to be knowledgeable. Is it a thing i need to be afraid of here now . No we dont need to be afraid of it in our daily lives. The truth is it is not preventable and we need to going on living our lives is the key. So many people in this anxiety culture that were in right now, take it to social media, it is almost as though it is a confessional. It is a way of finding solis. Is that a healthy way to do it. I do think if you are anxious and i specially about world events you want to acknowledge it. 450 hiding and not going anywhere is not the way to solve it. The final thought i want to ask you about. A lot of our staff have children. And when these images are up, they are going to have questions. It is going to be everywhere. How do we deal with it . You need to know your kids. Most parents know their kids better than we do. So you can make decisions. With the young kids i want to protect them. I dont think they need to be watching. It is not age appropriate. I think with middle schoolers and elementary schoolers you take their lead. I feel very strongly though that parents, when it is appropriate, parents should be talking to their kids about this. It is better to hear it from your parents. I dont think they need to know about every daily shooting unfortunately. They do need to know about the paris attacks and they need to know it from their parents. But parents need to manage their own anxiety. Donate over share. If the kitds want to know a little bit, good and bad. If they want to know more fine. Rt parents anxiety over flows and by give him too much information and we can scare them. Handle information in a way that is appropriate for them at that age. Model it for them. Right. We rely on you so much. Thank you so much for being here.
