Last month. The happy hour debate will be george pe tachy, sanatorium, jindal and perry holding down center stage there. Donald trump is keeping the insults approaching. For weeks, hes been on jeb bush. Now hes spreading that fire around insulting fiorinas looks. Take a listen. Carly, im talking about her persona. Her persona is, she is not going to be president. Shes a terrible, terrible, fail ed time. I dont know about ben carson. He was an actor. Perhaps an okay doctor. We are not talking a great, he was an okay doctor. I could think of nobody i would rather debate. She was the worst secretary of state in the country. I think beating her in a debate would be the easiest challenge of my life. Jeb bush told cnn he doesnt think trump can insult his way to the nomination or the white house. So far, the polls seem to be working. Alisyn . Its a distinct possibility. We know who has made the cut for the debate. Mark your calendars. Watch the debate this wednesday, september 16th. The first happy hour round, as its called is 6 00 p. M. Eastern. You will see who will be on the stage there. The main event is when the 11 candidates take their podiums at 8 00 p. M. Eastern. There are the newly minted faces. I wasnt told there was goupg to be a happy hour. Meanwhile, on the democratic side, Hillary Clinton plunging and her lead over sanders shrinking. Her potential democratic rival, Vice President biden opens up more about his readiness to run. L lets get the rest from jeff. Happy friday. Our poll shows more challenges for Hillary Clinton. Her standing, as you said, has fallen by ten points in the last month. Lets take a look at the numbers. 37 of democrats say she is their choice for president thats dproun 47 in august. Sanders is ten points behind at 27 . Basically unchanged in this national poll. Hes doing better in early reporting states. Look at these enthusiasm numbers. This is striking here. 43 of democratic voters are enthusiastic about her candidacy. It sounds good, but down 60 . Biden is behind with 37 now who are excited about his candidacy and 31 excited about sanders candidacy. While the numbers are hardly what clinton expected heading into the fall, here is a reality check. A wide majority of democrats believe she will win the nomination. 65 say they do. That is down from 78 in july. Shes head and shoulders above biden and sanders when they think ahead to who will win. We have another window into Vice President bidens thinking. He appeared on the late show with stephen colbert. He expressed doubt about his ability to run as they grieve the loss of his son that died three months ago. Look, um, i dont think any man or woman should run for president unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be president and two they can look at the folks out there and promise you you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy and my passion to do this. And and, i would be lying if i said that i knew i was there. Biden supporters know the clock is ticking here. His advisers are putting together a plan, im told, in case he decides to run. When you hear words like that, directly from his mouth, its difficult to imagine if he will decide to jump in. We still expect a decision in early, early october. Alisyn and chris. Talk off the reporter hat and put on the analysis hat. We want to know the state of play here. Lets get help with the cnn political analyst maggie and errol lewis. Lets play more sound with that. We are getting a window into where his head and heart is and expectations are. Here is what we figure is going on. Trying to figure out what is happening with his son. Take a listen. I went to denver, i landed at a military base. I met a group of military families. It was going great. A guy in the back yells, major bo biden, bronze star sir, served in iraq. All of a sudden, i lost it. Maggie, of course he does. This is a man we are talking about who knows loss and dealt with loss more than most. For all the enthusiasm around them, are the democrats being fair to him . Its a good question. There are a loot of people interested in seeing him run, not necessarily for him, but for themselves to try to stop Hillary Clinton because they are concerned, they dont like her or concerned with how she is doing in terms of polling. I think there are people who know him well who think hes long considered to be president to be the pinnacle of his life. Hes worked for it. Becoming Vice President , its the next logical step. Its not worked out that way for a variety of reasons. Hes clearly going through something most of us could never imagine. Hes seen more grief in his life than anyone is entitled to. Hes struggling with what to do about the race. He is looking at it in a real way. He is meeting with donor, feeling people out. That was senator elizabeth warren. It is a strange, twotrack process. All i can think is hes not quite in his right state of mind and understandably so. Its strange to track outcome. Either you run for president , the most intense experience, or you check out. What else is there for joe biden . Thats exactly right. You could take that same Emotional Energy and same logic and loss and grief and it can lead you right to the campaign trail. When you saw him on labor day running vigorous, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, the detail running alongside of him. He looked reborn n a way. You could easily see that being how he honors his son. Nothing could matter as much as the race for these men and woman who do this. I know they talk about their families, the race is everything. It is every calorie of every day of every moment. As he said himself, it will be hard to commit that when dealing with something so personal. At the moment. Hes waiting to change. That was his appearance on national television, this window to the soul. Lets look at Hillary Clinton on ellen. Shes rolled out a new plan to be more spontaneous and fun. Ellen is the perfect forum for that. Lets talk about the moment she talked about her granddaughter. What would you like to be call snd. Im fine with grandma. Im fine with madam president. That was a good line. You have reporting on just how focus grouped they are making her new spontaneity. Theres no better kind of spontaneity than that which is vetted. And planned. To be fair, they long talked about a plan to try to do more interviews. The bottom line is you are dealing with a candidate who there are few people any of us covered, candidates we have covered who have such a distrust of the press. Hillary clinton has never changeed from this. Going back to her days in arkansas, its never changed. She resisted it. Whats been strange is there was a whole sort of, at the outset, this is going to be different. Shes going to be more successful. Shes done a lot of media availability. In terms of national interviews, she is inching her way very, very slowly. Because of the email and because she didnt do the interviews, shes getting practice and reacclimated. Shes not terrible in interviews and she gets better with time. She needs a long runway and she hasnt given herself that long of one. Her Campaign Says she is more successful to voters. To media, who cares . Shes having a real, actual time with the people. Of course, the problem is a numbers game, right . How many tenperson meetings can you have . Its a shame. When she was senator clinton and we, in the local press, had access to her, she was very good. Some people are good in bigger groups, president obama, president reagan. Some are better in smaller groups, that includes Hillary Clinton. That includes the press. The fact theres a huge bubble, rope lines and coraling people. The campaign and the candidate are being overmanaged. She decided to do something few do. Shes taking on trump. Thats interesting. She called him out about the stuff about fiorina, which is obvious and warranted. She said i would love to debate him about that. You dont hear a lot of people say that about donald trump. Maybe shes trying to come out and be more bold. Thank you. We will talk more politics ahead. Breaking down the new cnn poll about the democrats and watch the Republican Debate this wednesday, september 16th. This is the first happy hour round at 6 00 p. M. Eastern. At 8 00 p. Lets get to will ripley, live for us. What is the situation . Fear the mounting for the 22 people, at least, missing from the floods which tore through the area. Im standing in a spot that was underwater. If you see the damage behind me, you can see what was going on when the floods were racing through the area. People were climbing up on their rooftops, standing on the balconies and grabbing anything they could to stay safe until rescue helicopters could arrive. For people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. I tried warfarin before, but the blood testing routine and dietary restrictions had me off my game. Not this time. Not with xarelto®. Ill have another arnold palmer. Make mine a kevin nealon. Brandnew poll numbers overnight that spell trouble for Hillary Clinton. The cnn orc poll shows support for her dropping in the primary and against republican opponents. Last month, clinton was up 18 points. In june, she was up 43 points. Here to talk to us about it, john avalon and cnn political commentator, margaret hoover. Great to see you guys. Morning. Lets talk about the polls hot off the presses. Lets look at Hillary Clinton versus Bernie Sanders. Shes at 37 and he is at 27 . Joe biden is at 20 . She, from august, shes down ten points. Bernie sanders, also suffering a little there. Biden is up. John, what do you see . One thing is the possibility of a biden candidacy takes a lot out of her hyde. Somewhat out of bernie. They are becoming more divided. Support is strong among them, not so much among liberals. The prospect of a biden candidacy, we saw on colbert one of the reasons it has captured a lot of imagination, he is authentic at a time she is considered less than so, planned spontaneity. Lets not forget nine. For someone who suffered so publicly. It is inspiring in a way you cannot poll test. Even though its not by design, he is an ant dote to trump. Both of you know this well, so forgive me, but polls are really just a snapshot of a moment in time. Thats what you use them for. Margaret, what is going on in this moment in time that is bad for hillary . Whats going on in this moment in time is that, what we know, who follow us all the time, she is a way more attractive candidate when shes not running than when she gets in. She has vulnerabilities, she stumbles. She doesnt come across as what the americans want, authenticity, the guy getting crushed in the middle, somebody who can be a fresh face in washington. Sanders is all those things. Biden isnt, but hes got authenticity. Every time i talk to democrats, though, they say, even begrudgingly, no ideological difference separates Hillary Clinton from the other candidates so much that they cant fall in line behind her n. 208 in 2008, Hillary Clinton wouldnt apologize. Theres nothing like that that divides it. Lets look at a moment of joe biden. This is a raw and authentic moment. You havent unfortunately, its a painful moment. Joe biden seems unfiltered, but we are watching him process his grief. Lets watch this moment from last night. A couple months before he died, i was at his house. He said dad, sit down. I want to talk to you. His wife, an incredible kid. Dad, i know how much you love me. You have to promise me something. Promise me you will be all right. No matter what happens, im going to be all right. This is a kid who, i dont know what it was about him, he that has enormous sense of empathy and im not making this up. I know i sound like a father. Anyway, its real. Sounds like you loved him, sir. Im welling up. Its hard. Everybody can relate to that moment. Thats right. I think its that matter of suffering profoundly in public and keeping your chin up that is such a, it is a transcend ent moment in a business. That is powerful and emotional, particularly on 9 11. If you look at the dynamics where people question fairly or unfairly the authenticity, the sincerity, heart feltness of the Hillary Clinton campaign, then here, donald trump who speaks brashly and arrogantly, biden is perfectly in the middle of that spectrum in a way that gives people hope and comfort in a place they expect the opposite. Very well said. As a dose of reality, remember, though, that bidens High Water Mark may be, now, when hes not in the race. Hillarys mark was when she was secretary of state. Everybodys High Water Mark. Before they are a candidate. People get assessed a certain way trump is not. Thats a point of fascination for those things. Lets end on this. Because this is so heavy with the Vice President and truth, we have to give him his privacy, but hes going to have to figure it out. Hillary clinton is trying to appeal to people in a new way that gives you a visceral feeling. Do we have the video of her on ellen doing a little dance . Ill recreate it. No, no. Thats good. Shes doing the naenae. I mean, john, she needs work on that. Does this bill clinton tweeted she needed to work on the nae nae. Is this a real moment . As opposed to what . Is it not hillary . Hillary clinton is a real person. That was definitely an attempt at dancing on a show that is supposed to be spontaneous. I think her authentic self comes out in dealing with putin or isis. Shes secretary of state. When she tries to be fun it comes off that way. Thats part of her personality. I think theres a reason shes protective of her privacy and her dancing. On that note, thanks so much. Thanks for boog here. Watch the cnn Republican Debate this wednesday, if i havent mentioned that. Its september 16th. Set your dvrs. In a few hours, we will hear the reading of the names of those who lost their lives 14 years ago. We say never forget. Part of that is dealing with the threat of the terrorists. Has that gotten better . Intelligence reports about isis, the leading threat in the world. The reports are being watered down. Lets discuss with phil mud. Good to have you. Lets start with the big question. With well start with the question about the daily beast. 14 years later, are we saver . What dhaoes that mean to you . I remember being evacuated 14 years ago. I was at the executive Office Building at the white house. Now, as i look back, its about how you ask the question. The architects of 9 11 are gone. Al qaeda gutted. The organization that murdered 3,000 americans. If you think about it, you have seen reports over the past 24 hours, Intelligence Leaders see no threat to America Today that they would warn people about on 9 11. If you told americans that on september 12th, 14 years ago, wow, no catastrophic attack, we are okay. If you ask a question about the future, i would say isis holds it seeds for threatening the United States for ten or 20 years. The british arrested more people, including more women and girls than they have since 9 11. It was their biggest year ever. I think we are doing okay, but we have a couple more decades of this stuff. In terms of the duration, that takes us to the question, how do we fight this war . What are we told about . Ill put up the full screen from the daily beast. Twoa agag agag agage two anay were weaker than they believe they are. Lets keep it there so they can read the rest for themselves online. You say its not as sump l as that. How does it work . Why isnt this just a watering down deception . I think theres two questions. First, the boring management question. Theres a toxic management environment that leads them to say i have o object. Theres a question about whether its watered down. This is more complicated than it looks. We have been at the wars in afghanistan and iraq for 15 years. Theres a lot of intelligence professional in general. The analysis that is done is not analysis of facts, its an analysis of judgment. How do we think we are doing against isis . Those people reviewing it might look at the work sand say i have been there, i dont believe it. I have different views on a situation. The last thing i would say is analysts generally, themselves are bias. Analysts come to the table. Every day, they are going to tell you, the sky is falling, something is wrong, they are not paid to say things are doing well. Here is the concern. When you hear this, the words that pop into your head or mind are yellow cake thach. That pops into my head. The intelligence was designed to suit a narrative. Many people believe that got us into a war that took a lot of lives, didnt need to and didnt help us. Do you believe that went on and if so, is this exposure . Its not clear to me that thats what happened in this case. I think its worth investigating. They have to investigate it. I sat there, let me be blunt, in front of dick cheney. He crushed me. Thats difficult for an analyst to have them question every you say. If you dont have the courage to standup and say im sorry mr. Vice president , im sorry mr. General. Crushed you how . The conversations we have had and this has been documented about the extend of saddam husseins perspective. His was different than ours at the agency. He came to the agency and we had difficult conversations. I dont think its wrong, its important to have a voice. I heardage uses say i dont feel like i have a voice and then complain. You cant have it both ways. Did you feel the political pressure coming to you, i ask this because its instrucktive. Thenned to go to war and you told them you didnt think it would hold up . It was slightly different. They wanted to go to war. The white house wanted to get rid of saddam hussein. Our answer is, thats a political decision if you want to put american lives at risk. If you want to use intelligence this way, we cant back you. Thats the concern, right . Yeah. Thats right. Just quickly, again, analyst complain, the Inspector General has to figure out whether the commanders had the intent to change it because they wanted to water it down or they thought they were wrong. Thank you very much. I wish you the best on this day. Take care. Hillary clinton taking aim at donald trump. Does trump really have a problem with women voters . Where does clinton stand with them . Helping to bridge the digital divide. There is one particular candidate who seems to delight in insulting women every chance he gets. I have to say, if he emerges, i would love to debate him. [ cheers and applause ] Hillary Clinton there talking, of course, about donald trump, the candidate in trouble for comments he made about a woman this time, Carly Fiorinas looks. Trumps comments about women dont seem to be hurting him in the polls. Why is that . We have the president of the National Organization for women. They have endorsed Hillary Clinton. Well talk about that in a moment. Thank you for joining us. We have to talk about the numbers. When you look at the polls, donald trump takes a third of the republican womens votes. Hes up 13 . What do you think is going on . You know, i think whats going on is women voters actually are looking at their pragmatic concerns, their pocketbook concerns. Donald trump has talked about imposing taxes, realistic taxes on the wealthiest. That is popular among women. Hes talked about the minimum wage. Hes talked about universal health care. They are issue that is are popular with women. I think the surge in womens support for trump reflects womens real concerns about their families finances. Please explain that to the audience better. There are plenty of high earning women, however, theres a transition in American Culture about women being the heads of households. Tell us about the nature of the households, the financial bur n burdens and why they care. 40 of households have women as the sole or primary bred winner. More than half of households in this country, the womens wages are essential to the ability of that household to keep its head above water. The reality is, twothirds of minimum wage workers are women. These are workers who dont get health care benefits. They are working at poverty wages. The federal minimum wage is 7. 25 an hour. Women across the country are very much aware of the economic insecurity many of them face. And part of the reason why the minimum wage hasnt gone up is because too many politicians are enthralled to too many forces, corporate forces that want to keep the minimum wage low. Given that donald trump is talking about that and of course your own Household Income is at the top of your head as a voter or the stat hes in with Carly Fiorina. Should people be talking out about trumps attacks . Carly fiorina said i dont want to get into that. Im getting under his skin. Should people be more forceful . When a woman politician is attacked on her looks, on her appearance, on what shes wearing, her poll numbers will go down until she calls it out. She identifies the attack. That is what mr. Trumps attacks on women are. When that gets called out, then the women politician numbers go up. She calls it out, then shakes it off is in the best position to respond. He says he cherishes him, ask his wife and daughter. How do you reck size that . Its not the same thing as respect. I have been really struck by the passion in Donald Trumps attitude toward women. Its a passionate hate, quite frankly. It doesnt take much to trigger him to explode in a really passionate venting. He calls women animals and says they are horrible and he said about megyn kelly, being on her peer yriod and angry. I think its going to hurt him, ultimately with voters. There are other candidates who said they have support and have proven they support women. Tell us why the organization is endorsing this candidate. On the democratic side, we have great candidates and potential candidates from a womans point of view. When Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, she uniquely insisted on bringing womens rights and womens equality into every aspect of what the state department of the United States did. She did not just meet with the elite women when she visited different countries. She didnt just go with the Sheryl Sandbergs of the countries, she wanted to meet with the people at the grass roots level working for equal fi tr women. She understands the need to push and to create policies that will really get us toward equality. Thats why our organization endorsed her, proudly and early. Thanks so much for joining us. We appreciate it. For those of you at home, if you want to get involved in the conversation, cnn newday. We are following a lot of news this friday. Lets get to it. Big news about the debate. We know who is on the stage on wednesday. Donald trump continues to defie political convention. The idea of trump is great. Im confident im going to be the republican nominee. Surging ahead of Hillary Clinton in iowa. People are sick of establishment politics. Be careful what you wish for. So 50 boats land on this island a day. The orange life jackets, the unofficial uniform for the migrants. The 14th anniversary of one of the most tragic events in u. S. History. Announcer this is new day with chris cuomo, Alisyn Camerota and michaela pereira. Good morning, welcome back to your new day. It is friday, september 11th. This morning, we cant help but reflect on the terror attack that changed all of us 14 years ago. Here is a live look for you at 1 world trade. They are commemorating at the World Trade Center site and at the white house and in shanksville, pennsylvania. As well as, here is the pentagon, where the American Flag was just unfolded. Cnn will have coverage of this throughout the day. Few things in america, like terrorism and those vying to be the commander in chief. Polls show more support for trump and carson. A stunning slide for a candidate who once led in the state polls. We have a big win for Carly Fiorina. Shes see cured a spot in the main stage. Can she shine in prime time like she did in happy hour . Athena jones begins coverage at this hour . Reporter good morning. Good news for trump, hes still on top for iowa republicans. Trump there at 27 . Carson, right behind him, an outsider candidate, never been elected to public office. Both of them up since july. There you see scott walker. This is bad news for him, his lead has evaporated. He has fallen 15 points in iowa since june. Here is another important number from that poll. Look at how many people say they would definitely not support trump or jeb bush, for that matter. Take a look here. That number is 25 for trump. Bush is right behind him at 23 . Take a look all the way to the bottom of the list. Ben carson is down there at 3 . Only 3 of folks saying they would not support him. Very good news for ben carson. Lastly, when you look at the favoribility numbers for the two top, ben carson leads trump on that point by nearly 20 points. Take a look. 79 for carson compared to 60 for trump. That number for trump is high. His unfavorable numbers are much, much higher than carsons at 35 . This is the state of play as we head into cnns Republican Debate. Take a look at the top ten candidates appearing on the prime time debate stage. You have an order, rand paul, mike huckabee, marco rubio, cruz, carson, trump, bush, walker, fiorina, kasich and christie. Trump gets center stage because he is the frontrunner. Fiorina surged in the polls after her impressive performance in the first second tier debate. The second socalled happy hour debate on cnn. Thats george pataki, jindal and graham. Perry is holding down center stage there. We have been talking about the insults that donald trump has been hurling at several rivals. Take a listen at what jeb bush had to say in an interview with jake tapper. I dont see how over the long haul that you can insult your way to the nomination. Certainly not the presidency and not the nomination, either. Well see about that. Bush is saying to trump, the president is the commander in chief, not the insulter in chief. I still have a feeling this is not the end of the insults we are going to hear from the leader of the gop pack. Chris . Its working. The question is, does it continue to. Athena, thank you. Theres no better way to measure these men and women than facing off. Now that the stage is set, literally, mark your calendars to watch the debate, wednesday, september 16th. The first round, happy hour, at 6 00 p. M. A bunch of governors in there. Then at 8 00, the main event when 11 candidates take to their polls. Hillary clintons numbers continue to free fall. Her lead over Bernie Sanders slipped to ten points. Her advantage over the Top Republicans vanished. Her potential democratic rival joe biden casting doubt on his readiness to run. Jeff, good morning to you. Good morning, michaela. The new poll shows more challenges for Hillary Clinton. Lets take a look at the numbers. 37 of democrats now say shes their choice for president. Thats down from 47 one month ago in august. Now, Bernie Sanders is ten points behind at 27 and support for joe biden climbed to 20 . Why is this all happening . Look at this. The enthusiasm numbers. This is the most striking number of all. 43 of democrats are enthusiastic about her candidacy, not bad, but down from 60 in april. It puts her in line with joe biden, 37 and sanders. While the numbers are hardly what Hillary Clinton expected in the fall, a wide majority of democrats believe she will win the nomination. 65 say they do. Its down 78 in july. Shes head and shoulders above joe biden or sanders when democrats think ahead to who will win the race. We have another window into his thinking last night as he appeared on the late show with stephen colbert. Take a listen. Look, um, i dont think any man or woman should run for president , unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be president and two, they can look at folks out there and say, i promise you, you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy and my passion to do this. And, i would p lying if i said that i knew i was there. Of course hes expressing doubt about his emotional ability to run as they grieve the loss of his son, bo. Its very raw and real for him as he explained a little bit more. I went to denver and landed a at a military base and met a group of military families. It was going great. A guy in the back yells, major bo biden, bronze star, sir. Served with him in iraq. All of a sudden, i lost it. So there is joe biden in his most authentic way speaking. Its one of the things people like so much about him. Look, biden supporters know the clock is ticking for him to make a decision. His advisers are putting together a plan. Hes having meetings in case he decides to run. When you hear the words from his mouth, its hard to imagine if hell be able to jump in. That is poignant stuff, jeff. Thanks for playing it. Lets talk about the gop side. Yesterday, ben carson and his opponent, donald trump, spent much of the day trading barbs. Lets bring in Armstrong Phillips to talk about this. How are you . Im well. They seemed to question each others faith, among other things. Let me play for you, and the viewers, the thing that carson said that set off trump in the beginning. Listen to this. I realize where my success has come from. I dont, in any way deny my faith in god. I think that probably is a big difference. You know, one of my favorite bible verses, proverbs. 22 4. By humility and the fear of the lord our riches and honor in life. Thats a very big part of who i am. Humility and the fear of the lord. I dont get that impression with him. Maybe im wrong. I dont get that impression. Armstrong, i mean he seemed to be suggesting that donald trump is not a beacon of humility. [ laughter ] well, the good news is, that did happily take place. Dr. Carson, in no way intended to question mr. Trumps faith. He did apologize for it and lessons learned. Sometimes you state things and you dont always know how its going to be interpreted. He thinks it was a mistake to question trumps hugh mill thai and faith . Mistake is not the right term. You should never question someones faith. There are always better ways to say things and realize it did not come out the right way. That set off donald trump. He then questioned dr. Carsons faith. He also planted the seed of doubt about even dr. Carsons medical record. Listen to what donald trump said on new day yesterday. I dont think hes a great religious figure. I saw him yesterday quoting something. He was quoting on humility and looks like he just memorized it two minutes before he said the quote. Now he gets on low key. Frankly, he looks like he makes bush look like the energizer bunny. He was a doctor, perhaps an okay doctor, by the way, he was an okay doctor. Theres a lot to dissect there. Les start with the medical credentials. He was an okay doctor, you can check that out, too. What does he mean by that . Interesting. We see where people or politicians get together, meet each other. Then you realize for what mr. Trump suggested, people dont really know each other. What mr. Trump revealed, its true. He doesnt know who dr. Carson is. He doesnt know about separating conjoined twins and his record as a pediatric neurosurgeon. We are not going to criticize him for what he is saying. He may believe that. If he knows dr. Carson, he wouldnt have said what he did. What about the seed of doubt about dr. Carsons views on abortion. Go back and look at his views on abortion, as though theres a smoking gun there that we would find. Alisyn, no smoking gun. Dr. Carson made it clear, he was a supporter of jimmy carder, Walter Mondale and there was a time in his life he was not certain on issues. He became involved and heard speeches of ronald reagan. What he believed in the past is no longer what he believes. Like any of us, that was in the 90s. We are not the same person today as we were in the 90s. Thats fair criticism about the evolution on abortion. There was a time dr. Carson was prochoice and supported abortion rights. Absolutely and he admits that. Now, dr. Carson took the high road and he was asked on fox, if he wanted to respond to some of these. He basically said, i dont want to get into the mud pit. Thats not my nature. Is it okay to back down from donald trump or should he engage . Quite to the contrary. He did not back down. You dont want to pour fuel on his fire. Listen, americans want us to be silly. They want us to be respectful. They want us to represent the best of who they are. They want us to be president ial. Dr. Carson understands this. If he is going to Say Something, especially when you are not dealing with the issue that is Americans Care about, why get into that territory to upset the donald. Listen, what dr. Carson wants to do is, next week, when you host this debate, be a separate person on that stage. A few weeks ago, during the fox debate, dr. Carson showed mr. Trump. Hes like a star, hes coming. On that note, we will end on that note. I want to pull up the numbers, to prove your point, just released, in terms of dr. Carsons favoribility. 79 now among voters there. Donald trump at 60 . We will leave it there. Thanks so much. More politics ahead and well break down the cnn orc polls and be sure to watch the cnn Republican Debate wednesday, september 16th. The happy hour round, 6 00 p. M. And 8 00, the main event where these 11 candidates will take the stage. May have to borrow from armstrong. The storm is coming and its september 16. The u. S. Will increase the number of Syrian Refugees it will take to 10,000. It sounds like a big number. Will that number make a dent, given the hundreds of thousands running for their lives in many cases . Jim acosta joins us from the white house with the latest. Whats the message . Reporter chris vowing to do more in the syrian refugee crisis, the white house is signaling a surge of newcomers from the war torn country allowed into the u. S. The Obama Administration says the country will accept at least 10,000 refugees over the fiscal year. The administration is looking at boosting the overall number of refugees allowed into the u. S. From around the world to 100,000 over the coming years. That could mean more syrians. That is an increase. Less than 2,000 being allowed into the u. S. Republicans on capitol hill, including peter king, arguing this poses a security risk. White House Press Secretary josh earnest said that is not the case. Here is what he had to say. Refugees go through the most robust security process of anybody contemplating travel to the United States. Refugees have to be screened by the National Counterterrorism center. They go through data bases maintained by dhs, department of defense and intelligence community. As for the other flash point of the administration, the iran deal. Gop leaders are vowing to keep trying, but they are running out of time. If the deal is not rejected by thursday, it goes into full effect. The president is calling this is victory for diplomacy. Thank you so much. We should point out, cnn was there as dozens of the refugees made the retch rouse journey on huge rafts. As they arrive, some kissing the ground. This is dong rouse and expensive for them. Ivan watson saw it all. Reporter here is whats so crazy about the economics of the wave of human migration. If you have the right passport, it only costs you 36 to buy a seat on a ferry from the coast of turkey, about an hour away to the greek island. Smugglers are charging Syrian Refugees, to make that same journey. This morning, we saw at least four of these rafts land on a stretch of greek beach with dozens of people spilling off, relieved and cheering on to the beach. These Syrian Refugees, they really know what they are doing. They have waterproof couches that cold their smartphones and documents. They know where to go to get tickets to the greek ferry. The United Nations say there are up to 50 of these boats landing on that small greek island every day. Back to you. Everything about it so dangerous. Other headlines this morning. He resigned last year following drug conviction. Hes 18 months sober now. Thats the most important thing to say this morning. Its his first time on television talking about it and hes pushing for criminal justice reform. You should read about it. Go to cnn. Com for more. How are you . Im great. You know, its been a rough couple years. But, what has been more rewarding than i could imagine is time to spend with my family, my 3yearold son in particular and take time to grieve. I have been blessed with many opportunities in life, but to be here now and doing this is great. 18 months sober. All you have is today. What are some of the lessons you have learned that you want people to know . You said it, today, live every day in the moment. That is important for me. I have been through a lot. I dont know whats going to happen tomorrow. One of the biggest things i have learned through all of this is living in the moment. I have been blessed with a lot of things, personally, my family, professionally. Ef done incredible things. I have been a news reporter. I have been elected to congress. Its been life in the fast lane but now, one of the biggest things i have learned is just taking time to step back and live day by day. I know you often want to speak about hey, i let people down, i made mistakes, you wound up getting prosecuted for this. Now that you have learned about addiction, some of the things you cant apologize for because they go beyond your ability to control them . I dont want to portray myself as a victim. I made a choice. The best thing for me, to move on, was to take responsibility for that choice. One thing i would share with you that i would do different is i would have resigned immediately. The only answer i have for why i didnt was, im a grown man and im happy to admit i was scared. I didnt know what to do. I took responsibility and moved on. Thats the best thing you can do. In terms of policy, things like the war on drugs, which i think is a failure, which i think is misguided at best and blind at worst. Im happy to talk about that all day. When you look at what should be done, it does play into, you know, your own approach. You say i took responsibility. You look at a system where they may put too much responsibility on the actual attic. Our jails are filled with people who use drugs, not sell them. What do you think needs to be done . We need to focus on rehabilitation, not incourse ration. People dont like it. They will say you are soft. You are soft on drugs. You are soft on crime. You took responsibility for it. They have to pay. They are nonviolent offenders. If you are a social conservative im so far right, sometimes i find myself left of president obama. I would say this to conservatives. Social conservatives thrks is about families, keeping them together. If you are fiscal conservative, keep productive members of society in society. Focus on rehabilitation, not incourse ration. We are preaki ibreaking up fami throwing away 80 billion a year unless we get reform. People dont know that. We are going to make you pay when you break the law. That reflecks todays society. Its not how you feel, its what you say. It reminds me of south park characters getting angry and fired up. When we talk about the real policy of the war on drugs or criminal justice reform, we need to have, i think, more republicans going beyond these talking points of just getting fired up and you need to pay for your crime. Again, i cant stress enough, look at rehabilitation, not incourse ration. Its about families. People like the same argument about immigration. If you put up the polls, your party, the gop, wants to reward harshness when it comes to people who break the law, drugs, coming across the country illegally. Save that for another time, we want to punish people, get the law straight, get it in force. Thats wh ees who we are. We are a country of laws. I broke the law. I take responsibility for that and move on. In terms of border security, we are not a country unless we have borders. I take a contrarian view. I think its a national Security Threat unless we take them in and document them. Im saying, maybe not a path to citizenship, but the people that have been here and are hard working members of our society, i believe its a fiscal issue and National Security issue to get them documents and into society. Again, that type of policy, it has depth to it. Im happy to talk about it all day. We need to move beyond the talking points of just getting people fired up. I get it. I get it politically. I have been there. I know how to get people, you know, riled up and fired up and all of that. Its time that we, as a country, have serious, serious conversations with some depth about our National Security, about illegal immigration and about the war on drugs policy. Criminal justice reform, not to mention Foreign Policy, for another day, maybe. I would like to have you back another day. You are looking grea ining grea. I love the message. After you get out of politics, you get reasonable. I havent changed anything. I have been consistent. You have to put your lefty righty hat on. Reasonable, a word that has become a dirty, filthy word is compromise. That doesnt mean compromising principl principles or values, but compromising them. You know what his problem is . Hes making sense, chris. Ahead, will the nypd release video of james getting roughed up by police . He says it had nothing to do with race, just mistaken identity. Tennis pro james blake was roughed up by new york police in a case of mistaken identity. Also from the mayor of new york, bill de blasio. Questions about race or whether Excessive Force was involved in this. Joining us to discuss, retired nypd detective and commentator from the New York Times, charles blow. Gentlemen, a lot to get to. Lets try to chip away if we can. From what we know, and i know we dont know everything about what happened here. That is important to say. Was protocol follows here . What that kind of force the right amount of force for this nonviolent arrest . Based on what mr. Blake has said and he seems credible and level headed, he believed the Police Officer that came and tackled him was unwarranted. We have to wait to see the video. Swh what is the protocol . Do you say, halt, nypd, put your hands up . What i would do is make sure that you are safe. Make sure that nobody takes you out. All right . To go up to him and talk to him. Thats what i would have done. Then find out what the information was. I would probably go up, excuse me sir, you are under arrest, put your hands behind your back. Mr. Blake said he did not identify himself as a Police Officer and this man instantly tackled him. Four others did. Exactly. Im looking at this saying, okay, all i want now is to hear the officers side of the story and see the video. Well talk about the video in a second. We know that the officer has been placed on modified duty right now. We are hearing that they think this is unwarranted, even though we learned from the daily news, this officer, only on the job four years had several accusations of Excessive Force and failing to identify himself as Police Officer. Was modified duty enough . Are you okay with that . Its not whether im okay with anything. I think the modified duty, what they do is protocol when you are investigating. Thats what they are going to do. I think the bigger question is whether or not theres appropriate use of force in this particular case and if theres a pattern that any officer exhibits of excessive use of force if this is excessive use of force. If it is, is this a training issue . Yeah, i think its a training issue. Do i think the officer should be fired . Thats up to the Police Commissioner. This guy has a pattern of using Excessive Force. Here is a question that a lot of people are discussing. They came on the air and said this has nothing to do with race. There is no way it has anything to do with race. Your thoughts on that in. Thats always a problem. When people categorically rule out or rule in race as a factor in anything. At best, you are guessing. Or at best, its a hypothesis or educated guess. Maybe its based on your experiences, for and against. You cannot crawl into someones head unless they articulate in words that race is playing a part, you cant say. Even if you could crawl into someones head and they are thinking they are doing the right thing, we understand about bias that you can think you are doing the right thing and bias can still be operational. When they do test for bias, they do it as a speed test. Answer the questions, do the activity before you can think. James blake himself told the daily news, in his mind, that race probably was a factor. Its more than that. To him, its about the use of force. He said he doesnt believe race was a factor. Hes been speaking outwardly. Hes changed his attitude here. On gma, its not a race issue, now its a race issue. I dont know that hes changing it all of a sudden. To the video, do you think we are going to see it . Yeah, we are going to see it. They always release video. Once the investigation is finished, we are going to be able to see the video. Thank you for joining us. Tonight, you are going to hear from James Blakely himself. Tom brady hasnt said a lot about the scandal. Did Something Else happen last night that you need to know about . Victory comes a week after a judge threw out bradys suspensi suspension. Rachel, you spoke to the man himself. How did you see him, the game and the intrigue that happened during the game . Hes excited. Reporter its all good stuff, chris. Look, it was raining last night, but did nothing to dampen the celebration. This was a party. It was essentially a party to celebrate the super bowl win. There were fireworks ahead of time. They unveiled the super bowl banner. It felt like a Victory Party for tom bradys suspension being lifted. Here is evidence of that for you. The lawyer who got tom brady off was walking about the stadium before the game started. Not only did fans recognize him, they started chanting his name when hes getting some of the biggest cheers of the night, you have a feeling for the mood. Oh yeah, the game went well, too. Here is what brady had to say afterward. It was a special night. I was excited. Our whole team was excited. We havent had one of these games in a long time. Its always fun to be out there and get the opportunity to play. We took advantage of it. It was a good win. Now, tom brady not only got to be in the building last night, got to play. Roger goodell, the man who initially suspended him, he wasnt there. It was his first time as commissioner he decided to skip the season opener. He said he didnt want to be a distraction. I dont know, the crowd wasnt so happy with that. They started chanting where the roger at the end of the second. His absence was duly noted. Im sure they would have been warm and embracing if he was here. This is not between the two moments of perfection. You do not have john berman. I am not going to ignore what else happened when all the pittsburgh coaches, the steeler coaches were like, hey, whats going on in my headset right now . Why am i hearing the patriot radio call of the game and not my coaches. Tell us about it. Reporter the coaches have headsets, they talk to each other, talk into the booth. They like to hear each other talk. What the pittsburgh coaches heard was a loud bleed of the patriots radio broadcast. They talked to the nfl officials about it. Policy is to shut down the other teams headset to fix the problem, so they did that. The patriots were shut down for a while. They fixed the problem, put them online and they were okay for the second half. I want to read you a statement from the nfl. The pittsburgh coaches experienced problem with an infrastructure problem. Once the power issue was addressed, it functioned property. The nfl has an explanation. The pittsburgh coach, mike tomlin did not seem satisfied by that. Chris, after the game, he was terse, is the adjective im going to use. When asked about the headset issues, he says this always happens here. It would be interesting to note last week Sports Illustrated had a story about other teams talking about the experiences they issue at this stadium. The nfl, i want to point out, the nfl does control the headsets, the patriots dont. The nfl controls the headsets. They just dont control them well in this stadium . This one arena. Interesting. We all hear the wrong voices in our head. Sometimes berman is piped into my iop and he makes he say crazy things. Is that what it is . Thats what it is. Thanks so much. The nation will pause this morning to remember the attacks on this day 14 years ago. This is new day with chris cuomo, Alisyn Camerota and michaela pereira. Good morning. It is friday, september 11th, 8 00 in the east. Of course, this is the day we remember what happened on 9 1114 years ago, so many lives lost and a country changed. This is ground zero today. This is the freedom tower, a reminder of what was there as much a reminder of what it is today. And the sky cast in the right light for what were dealing with this morning. We also have politics to talk about. We have joe biden wearing his heart on his sleeve in an emotional interview with stephen colbert. Admitting that he doesnt know if he can give his all to the challenge of running for president of the United States. Hillary clinton was on ellen. Her lead over Bernie Sanders is shrinking in this new orc poll. And her advantage over the Top Republican candidates appears to be gone. Cnns coverage begins with cnns senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny. Lets start with joe biden. He did not close the door entirely to the possibility of running in that interview last night. Hes had meetings all week to discuss a plan if he decides to jump in. He wants to run, several of his friends tell me. But he doesnt know if hes emotionally able to. Lets take a look. Look, um, i dont think any man or woman should run for president unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be president. And two, they can look at the folks out there and say, i promise you, you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy and my passion to do this. And id be lying if i said that i knew i was there. Now, he and his family are still agreeing the loss of his son beau who died of cancer three months ago. He described some days are good and some days are tough, like when someone mentions his son, who fought in iraq. I went out to denver and i met a whole group of military families. And it was going great. And a guy in the back yells major beau biden, bronze star, sir, served with him in iraq. And all of a sudden, i lost it. Now the Vice President went onto say that nobody has a right to seek that offense unless theyre willing to give it 110 . Politically speaking there are reasons to run as our new poll shows. For the first time Hillary Clinton is below 40 in national polling. Only 37 of democrats now say shes their choice for president. Thats down from 47 in august. Bernie sanders is 10 points behi behind. Meanwhile the support for joe biden has climbed to 20 . Perhaps most striking of all, a steep decline in enthusiasenthu. 40 say theyre enthusiastic about her candidacy. That is down 60 from when she jumped in this april. But when you look at head to head matchups with Hillary Clinton and republicans, shes essentially tied, a double didnt lead eardigit lead earlier this summer has evaporated. Its a different story with joe bide biden. He runs ten points stronger than trump and eight higher than bush. His supporters believe there is an opening. Hes run twice for president before. He knows how difficult this is. He says matter of factually hes not sure he has the strength. I dont think anybody would fault him for that, jeff. We understand. Theres a great deal of compassion for him, to be sure. On the republican side a new poll shows donald trump and ben carson surging in iowa and now we know the final debate stage is now set for next weeks gop showdown right here on cnn. Trump is still on top in this new quinnipiac poll of iowa republicans. Take a look here. You see trump there at 27 support. Ben carson is in second place at 21 . Thats a big jump for both of those candidates since the last poll in july. And this poll is very bad news for scott walker. He was in the lead back in july at 18 . His lead has evaporated. Hes fallen 15 points in iowa. Heres another important number from that same poll. Look at how many people say they would definitely not support donald trump or jeb bush, for that matter. That number is 25 for trump. Bush is right behind at 23 . Take a look all the way at the bottom, ben carson only at 3 . Only 3 of folks say they would definitely not support him. That is very good news for ben carson. Heres more good news for him when you look at the favorability numbers. That trump number is still pretty high. But when you look at his unfavorable numbers, those numbers are also much, much higher than carsons. 35 of folks have an unfavorable view. This is the state of play as we head into cnns Republican Debate on wednesday. Take a look at the candidates who will be on the prime time stage. You have in order rand paul, mike huckabee, marco rubio, ted cruz, ben carson, donald trump, jeb bush, scott walker, Carly Fiorina, john kasich and chris christie. Trump gets center stage because he is the front runner. And Carly Fiorina has surged in the polls after her impressive performance in that second tier debate on fox last month. Our second tier debate is going to be george pataki, rick c santorum, rick perry. Now that we know who made the cut, lets make sure people are marking their calendars for the big day here on cnn. You can tune in right here for the cnn Republican Debate this wednesday, september 16th as we call it the happy hour round is at 6 00 p. M. Eastern. At 8 00, the main event. 11 candidates will take the podium. Next wednesday . Thats bridge night. A man who understands president ial politics very well, michael dukakis. Its good to have you with us this morning. Good to be with you. Lets take a look at the recent snapshot of your party. Hillary is slipping. She had a big lead over the Bernie Sanders. Not so much anymore. Hes pulled even or ahead with her in iowa. Hes got the growing lead in new hampshire. And most importantly joe biden seems to represent a viable alternative, though he has shown no real indication of getting in the race. Your take, governor . First, kitty and i are with hillary. We like her, we think shed be a great president. These polls are virtually worthless at this stage of the game. Early polls mean nothing. I remember even in my race i was supposed to be 17 points ahead of george h. W. Bush. I was never 17 points ahead. Its a long race. Its a lot of work out there. The question of whos organized and what are they doing and how theyre doing it, its going to be a long time before we really know who the front runners are. I understand. I grew up in the game and watching you and understanding the vagaries of polling. They are a good snapshot of a moment in time. The question this recent poll raises is does your party need joe biden to get into this race to cover for what with hillary is not catching fire with your own party and independents . Well, let me say two things. First, theres a machine out there largely financd by big republican bucks that has been trying to destroy Hillary Clinton for the last several months. And i think we all know that. So far they seem to be doing a lot of damage. On the other hand, i have to tell you this stuff about her emails is such nonsense. I dont know of a single prominent person in washington who doesnt have a private email. Otherwise wed never be able to get a hold of these folks. And the notion there was something wrong with what she was doing is foolishness. But people have been backing away at it and its done some damage. She just apologized. She said she shouldnt have had two. She shouldnt have had just exclusively personal email. She should have used government email. It wasnt the republicans who put the server in her house. The it was what bill had set up and she carried forward with it. Hey, chris, you tell me of one person in washington of any prominence who doesnt have a private email which he or she used all the time and a private cell phone as well. This is absurd. Exclusively, though, governor. She only had that. She didnt use the government email as most of the players down there do. I dont agree with that. Chris, if i want to get a hold of a cabinet secretary, i dont use the official website. Youd never get through. You pick up the phone and say give me he or she private email and you use it. This goes on all the time. So youre okay its preposterous. The notion would be that the secretary of state shouldnt be conducting sensitive, classified business on a private server. It should be on a government server because its government business and you need it for security et cetera. None of the things she did were classified at the time. Thats a little bit in dispute, as you know from recent reporting, governor. Well, theres some dispute. Lets be real here. People are using private email and cell phones all the time down there. You couldnt function without it. And the notion that shes doing something that nobody else has done thats terribly wrong is absolute baloney. That race going to the republicans represents three consecutive victories for republicans. That violates a rule in politics. The party is not supposed to get three straight wins. Thats what the democrats are asking for right now. In all fairness, shouldnt your party lose this race . Look, theres nothing inevitable in politics and there are no rules in politics. Look, i should have won that race and i blew it. How did you blow it . Why . Well, for two reasons. First, i made a decision, turned out to be the dumbest thing i ever did, that i would not respond to the bush attack campaign. And it was a mistake. You just cant do that. As a matter of fact, quick anecdote. I remember early in the campaign your dad said to me, hey, ignore those attacks. Theyre not going to go anywhere. We were campaigning in queens four days before the election. He turned to me and said, thats the worst advice i ever gave you. But it wasnt his fault. I made that decision, turned out to be wrong. Second ive won elections with grass roots organizing. And i spent a lot of time talking to people talking to people that i thought knew more than i did about running for president. It took barack obama not once but twice to prove to us that p p p while i dont remember pop take credit for giving you bad advice, though he wasnt that politically savvy. He did talk about you on top of that tank a lot. Appreciate your perspective ap and as the race moves along, please come back. Thanks, chris. Thank you, governor. Turning to concerning news, drivers are on edge in phoenix over fears that a shooter or shooters are on the loose. People are avoiding freeways all together after Police Confirm 11 highway shootings have happened in less than two weeks. Are they getting any closer to solving this . Reporter you know, at this point theyre not. We talked to the head of the department of Public Safety and i said how long might this take . He said this could take a very long time. These are difficult cases. But they are putting a lot of resources towards this. As you know, yesterday was the 11th case where someone was hit by a bullet or projectile. And theyre talking about this a bit too. Because there were several more incidents reported yesterday, two of which, a source has told me which has knowledge of the investigation, are likely the work of a copy cat. That does not make drivers feel any safer, because now they know there is not only one, but there is definitely more than one person who may be shooting at cars here. Webd ta folks are avoiding interstate 10. They have decided to take surface streets as well. And some of the School Districts have decided to go around i10 if they can. But this is a highly traveled road and police are asking for the publics help. We met up with a group of folks called bolt force who are giving that kind of help. But some folks are not sure if this is the kind of help they want. People have used that term in the past. I dont like that term because we dont go above the law. Were not out here slamming people to the ground. Reporter and that was bolt. He founded bolt force. They come out here on a night tonight basis, about 17 people scouring this area. But they say they always Contact Police first to let them know theyre out here. That is a good idea. It is scary stuff. Meanwhile, theres been a Senate Victory for president obama. Democrats successfully blocking debate on that republican resolution to reject the nuclear deal with iran. A procedural vote fell two short of the 60 needed to break a democratic filibuster. It ensures the deal will go into effect without a show down between congress and the white house. A u. K. Weather man is the toast of twitter for correctly pronouncing a town in wales. According to a new poll donald trump is both the most liked and most disliked candidate in iowa. Polling at 27 in the iowa with carson six points behind at 21 . Trump also leads the field as the candidate voters say they would definitely not vote for. Hi, guys. Good morning. Whats up with that . Hes the most disliked and the most supported. Explain. Whats up with that . Voters, registered republicans in iowa who are pretty politically aware are divided on whether they like donald trump. I think hes got a lot of support, obviously within the grass roots and i think a lot of people who also rightly can read the tea leaves and understand he probably isnt very electable in a general election. Hes certainly getting a lot of attention right now and i think some people see that as a good thing and others say that as okay, if he keeps talking like this, were not going to have a republican in the white house. Paul, lets put the matchup between Hillary Clinton and the big names on the gop side. Hillary clinton, ben carson, 5146. Shes losing. Hillary clinton, donald trump, straight up 48. Hillary clinton, jeb bush, shes down by the statistical margin. How do you explain . Its a race. Were almost 500 days from the election. First of all, we dont have a national election. We have a bunch of state elections. Its fine. Were going to have a contest. Were going to have a race. Weve got to put these horses on the track and let them run. As a hillary supporter, much more important to look at these early primary caucus polls. The democrats want a contest. The interesting thing is hillarys favorables are still very high in those early primary states even though Bernie Sanders is leading in those two states. What does that tell me . My party wants a fight, but they want it kept between the ditches. On the republican side i love it, by the way, but its nothing but insults. I couldnt be happier with the way both sides are going. Lets talk about Hillary Clintons appearance on ellen yesterday. It was interesting. This is part of her rollout of doing more media appearances, being more fun and spontaneous. She even talked about kanye west running for president. I heard him make the announcement. He said he wanted to run in 2020. I would only ask him if im running for reelection to wait. Okay. [ applause ]. Otherwise a lot of people want to run for president these days. Truer words never spoken. Do appearances like this resonate with voters. Yeah, if theyre authentic. It sort of deflates the authenticity when the New York Times reports the weekend before that you plan to be more authentic on the campain trail. Had that been a spontaneous appearance without this back story that hillary needs to show more heart and more humor, if we didnt know this was sort of or kes trade e orchestrated and manufactured, it would be lovely. Shes capable of sounding like a normal person. Seems like she goes out of her way not to sometimes. Her campaign talks too much. She doesnt talk enough. They talk too much. If you think politicians go out there and wing it on any regular basis, youre kidding yourself. Let me ask you something, paul. Trump on greta saying he says certain things as an entertainer. Do we have that . Listen. Many of those comments are made as an entertainer because i did the apprentice. It was one of the top shows on television. I decided not to do it again because i wanted to run for president. Some comments are made as an entertainer. And its a much different ball game. No, no, no, no, no. Please. Thats a good start. No. Youre running for president. Everything you say right now is as a candidate for president. Its not like you didnt know Rolling Stone was in the room when you made comments about Carly Fiorinas face. You dont get a pass. You dont get to be the straight talking candidate whose reason for being here is as a straight talker. And then say, i mean what i say unless you disagree with it, and then i dont and its a totally different thing and i said it as an entertainer. Were going to take you at your word, mr. Trump. Thats what makes you different, you say. Isnt his point hes starring in a reality show called the president ial race. Jeb bush, as he plummets in the polls you think hillary is in trouble at 37. Jeb is at like six. He looks so weak. Yesterday he came out and said oh, you cant insult your way to the white house. Really . Tell Thomas Jefferson that. He called adams a her mmaphrodi. Now, other famous people when they wrote their memoirs, im thinking of janice dickinson, did not include the episode about bill cosby because their lawyers said they couldnt. Why did you feel it was okay to write this . Actually i didnt know that about janice. I started writing this memoir in 2013. And i did do that big reveal, i thought, to my writer. And we did hand the chapter in. And they said, no, we dont want it. Why . Theres legal liability. Okay. And it wasnt until only after december and after my vanity fair story and all the women who came out so courageously that they said, about that bill cosby chapter, we would like to put it in the book. And it was at the 11th hour before the book went to press. Thats so interesting. Let me read to everyone what you write about revealing the cosby stuff. That said, i ended up staying three days. What happened . It was when i was telling the story to my writer, she just found it fascinating. Its true and i write about it in detail how that could possibly happen. It was a wonderful era, Wonderful Group of artists, designers, musicians and so i ended up staying three days. You also got caught up at that time in all of this sort of hard partying that went along with that. And you, i think, wanted to write about this and reveal that because youve come out the other side of it. Well, yes. I think youre speaking about drugs. And so basically it was that that was the drug of choice for the elite. And for me, it was remaining thin. And back then were speaking of cocaine, it wasnt addictive. Remember . Thats what everyone thought. Well, thats what they said. You know, the scientists, it wasnt addictive, it increased your intelligence, it killed your appetite and your eyes were nice and white and bright. We know better now. Basically there wasnt very much partying going on, but there was a lot of working and there was a lot of that in the work environment. I understand. And you wanted to share with people how you did come out the other side and tackle sobriety and youre so healthy now. Well, its one of the things i have never spoken about because my sobriety is sacred to me. But we lost a lot of people to drugs back then and we still continue to today. I felt that it was time for me to tell that story. Its a great book. Its an exciting read. Its called the face that changed it all. Thank you so much for coming in. I appreciate it. Today is the 9 11. Now, the date comes every year. But for too many the occasion has never left. Part of the promise to never forget has been the war against terror. Were going to take a look at how that fight as evolved in the 14 years since the attacks. A moment of silence is about to be observed in rem membrancef the september 11th attacks. Lets listen in now as we get close. Home of the brave [ bell ringing ] [ bag pipes and drums ] well, you know what youre seeing on the screen right now. We see it every year, the remembrance, the moment of science at 8 46 when the first plane struck. Youre seeing new york city on one side. The white house on the other side. The first lady and the president with their hands over their hearts, observing the moment of silence. Youre seeing the flag that has become a fixture in new york on 9 11 that was damaged and yet still is presented every year at ground zero. And to those who were lost and their families and all those effected, we remember them with a pledge to never forget. You just hear the bagpipes. That makes the hair on your arms stand up. And also hearing the names read out of everyone lost, even 14 years later, it always makes you catch in your throat. Powerful thing is for everyone to remember where they were 14 years ago and to remember that moment that we all hugged each other a little closer. We looked each other in the eye and we wished that that sentiment would continue now. But you remember the unity that there was on that day. A big part of the promise on never forget is the war on temperature. Lets bring in the first Inspector General of the United States department of homeland security. And atom fuentes, former fbi assistant director. Gentlemen, best wishes to you both on that day. When you take a look at where we were 14 years ago and where we are today, what do you see . Is there evolution, is there growth, is there progress . Theres been growth, chris. And theres also evolution. The evolution, i would argue, is in a negative direction. Al qaeda is still out there, still with the intent to carry out another 9 11 attack. Theres the al qaeda affiliate in yemen, aqap which has this fixation on bringing down aircraft and coming up with bombs that evade detection. And weve got isis, which is a horse of different color. Theyve got great amounts of territory. Theyve got military prowess. They are savagely brutal with the crucifixions and the beheadings. Theyve got this media that allows them to recruit. And unlike al qaeda theyre focused on anywhere, any time, any kind of attacks, with guns, knives, bombs, cars, whatever youve got, attack however many people you can. Theres this vulnerability and anxiety which is much more concerning than the mediate aftermath of 9 11. Do you believe that we are vulnerable to an attack of that scale and dimension as what happened 14 years ago . Its harder to carry out a catastrophic attack than it was 14 years ago. Thats the good news. But its not impossible. If only to prove their relevance and potency and theres a lot of rivalry among terror groups to be the biggest and baddest. I am very concerned about the possibility of another attack. It is not out of the question. In light of this daily beast reporting about intelligence on isis, what is your take on the organization and from your friends who are still in the game fighting against them . Are they out just to claim land over there and change culture over there . Or do they want to really get a presence in the United States and try to do damage here . For now they absolutely want to do damage, not just here but all around the western world. Theyre sending out 40,000 messages per day. My colleagues at the fbi are talking about the fact that its very difficult to know whos receiving them and being radicalized to take action by those tweets and other social media postings. They also know that once those postings happen and something that we didnt have to face on 9 11 is that when a connection is made, they can immediately switch to the dark apps, the dark internet and communicate on completely encrypted apps that so far our nsa and fbi and other technicians have not been able to crack. And theres a number of them. And thats the other problem is that once they start to go operational that somebody does, they cant be tracked. The desperation after 9 11 is that you want to be able to tell people from positions of authority that we are safer because of what happened that day because weve learned and adapted. But tom, youre saying the reality is the threat is just different today, its not about more or less . Yes that part of it is much different. Al qaeda still wants to do a castastrophic attack if they can pull one off. Just International Financing and international communications. Besides the dark apps, to be able to coordinate such a large scale attack and with oh sam bi laden we pretty much won that part of the battle. If they doocant do a large att, they might get their hands on a Nuclear Weapon or something really horrible. Final words . Vigilance. As you said earlier we cant forget the odds are against us. So the American People and our National Security professionals have got to be vigilant every single day. The threat is increasing, i would argue, all these many years later. Thank you to both of you for your service all these years later. Everybody knows what 9 11 is about.
