According to authorities. In boston it isnt just the snow but now authorities are concerned about the dangers of the dropping temperatures. Overnight a fatal deep freeze stunning the northeast. A dangerous trifecta of high winds, over a foot of snow in some parts and belowfreezing temperatures from new jersey to maine. Were asking people if you cant stay of the roads boston declared a snow emergency once again. Setting the record for the snowiest week in the citys history. The new fear ice as accidents litter the roadways. In new jersey its icy, rain which makes the roads like impossible. The new England Patriots parade postponed. And scores of schools closed. Many not for snow but its more of an ice day. Sidewalks, students getting on the bus. In maine, wind gusts produced bitterly cold wind chills up to 20 degrees below zero. Ive seen the buses slip back down the street. Other states dropped to the Single Digits. Cant see the road right now, everything is all blurry. West of boston oh treacherous conditions on the roads, causing these teens to lose control of their atv, sliding into a parked car. In rye, new york a minivan losing control, koreaning into a previous icerelated accident killing the other two drivers. Horrible horrible. People have to slow down. In vermont, several snowplows were hit trying to clear roads. One slammed by a passing 18wheeler. Another driver trapped for 40 minutes after hitting a plow truck and had to be removed with the jaws of life. Treat the roads with caution, if you have to go out, go slow. Theres still a lot of work to be done in boston. Even before the storm set in, the city was making efforts to clear the parade route, if they would be welcoming home the super bowl champions, which they plan to do tomorrow. For a long time they felt they were going to be able to have the parade but last night the mayor felt there would be dangerous conditions. So many examples of how treacherous the roads are, thank you for that reminder. The deep freeze being felt in more than just the northeast. You may remember martin savidges dramatic live shots from cleveland on new day, the city got walloped by strong winds and more than a foot of snow. That was martin trying to tell us about it yesterday. So lets check back in with martin now. Hes in cleveland where wind chills are well below zero this morning. Martin how you doing . Hey, alisyn so kind of you to check back on me. What a difference 24 hours has made. It is finally stopped snowing and the best news of all is the wind has finally stopped blowing. But as you point out, it is just absolutely bitter cold. Slight breeze which means with the temperature weve got right now, were about 6 degrees below zero. But it just feels downright balmy compared to what i was enduring yesterday. In the end the total of snow in cleveland came from anywhere 8 to 13 inches. And on top of that it appears that the weather is going to improve slightly today. But its only going to be a short respite. As youve heard, more snow is on the way. Cleveland is on the plus side no surprise when it comes to seasonal snowfall. Theyre up by about five inches. Today the schools are back open, the airport is going to be more normal. Except for flights coming from the east. It should be a typical winters day here in cleveland. Let me show you whats got people really excited. If you look to the top of the brilliantlylit terminal tower, those colors are wine and gold. The reason for that the cavs have now won 11 in a row. With lebron james help and thats got clevelanders this morning feeling toasty warm. On an otherwise bitter morning. And every time i touch this side of the face i remember yesterday very well. Wind burn. Well you look a whole lot better today, mike goodness i think its the cleveland wind though that warmed the eded the cyour heart. Right here right here my hat. Next time youll see me with this. So heres the question we saw this last week, we saw this this week. How long is this cold going to last . Were hearing talk there might be another snowstorm. Dont shoot the messenger, late they are week. Lets bring in cnn meteorologist chad myers in columbus circle. People are getting tired of this groundhog day storyline. Ive heard about the snowstorm other networks are talking about, i dont believe it. You dont . Not at all. I went to chris cuomos dry cleaner yesterday and i asked them for light starch and this is what i got. Chris . Ha do you do with these dry cleaners man . This is just a tshirt. It looks about right. You want a little bit of stiffness in you there, chad, especially when youre out there, feel a little upright. We put this on the hood of the car about an hour ago, poured some water on it and it looks like a frozen piece of cardboard. Temperatures are cold enough to freeze a shirt and cold enough to freeze you and cold enough to freeze your pets so please take care of them this morning. The temperatures in Single Digits to the teens, Plattsburgh New York was 10 below zero. Look at the snow cover. It goes from chicago through detroit, back into buffalo and through boston and the deepest stuff is about worcester. Ive seen reports in the past seven days Worcester County about 60 inches of snow. Heres the next storm, i believe a clipper coming by another computer model saying a lot more for boston. Right now im thinking two to three inches of snow it comes in about 4872 hours. Well have to look to see if something can combine. Some models are right, some are wrong. Two are saying nothing. The european is saying yes, it could be something. Well take a look at it as it gets closer. Right now still too many days away to make a definitive answer and the temperatures are very very cold. If we get any type of precipitation, with temperatures like this it will be frozen. Were not going to get rain any time soon and i dont see us warming up significantly. Here in the east for the next 30 days. So maybe Punxsutawney Phil was slightly correct. Warm in the west cold in the east. Chris, id have a talk with your dry cleaner. 30 days no rise in temperatures . Dont kill hope chad. Ways going to tell you to come in but now you stay out here. Im playing out here all week. Were talking about what is to come. Right now theres plenty to deal with lets get the latest from the frostfighting front. Peter judge is with the massachusetts Emergency Management agency. Its good to have you with us peter. How is it going right now where you are . Well right now were still got a lot of work to do. I know the governor has asked nonemergency state workers to come in at 11 00. A lot of work on the roads to get caught up and the temperatures arent helping. The wind chill factors are about minus 15 degrees. So its going to be a challenge. I have people who are hitting me on social media. And saying wow, its hard driving here the snow thats on road plus the temperatures has made this some of the most difficult driving theyve seen so far. What are you hearing . Thats correct. What happened late yesterday afternoon is the temperatures dropped about 20 degrees in about two hours. So we had a slash freeze. So the snowy surfaces or the wet surfaces instantly froze. So we have ice skating rinks out there for a period of time. And very difficult for the crews to crack and get things down to the pavement. Theres a lot of pressure among business to get back to work. How are you reaching out to them . And are they responsive about trying to keep their schedules light during this period . Absolutely. Efforts are made were encouraging foemtslks to take public transportation. Red line one of our commuter lines is having difficulty today, which is not helping. There are a few major areas, city of boston the city of worcester and other communities dont have schools open. But other schools are slowly opening up. As i said the communities are trying to get back on their feet and i think businesses are making an effort. And i think theres action out there. Is it true that you are running out of room for where to put snow . Thats probably the biggest problem, particularly with the cities, that have the congested small streets to start with literally theyre trucking snow out to snow farms at this point. Just to make room. Environmentally, you cant dump it into the river, you cant dump it into the harbor so youve got to move it somewhere. Theres been a lot of frontloaders coming in from youll across the state to assist those cities to make room for cars and have folks get the sidewalks cleaned up. Particularly planning for the patriots victory parade tomorrow. You figure downtown at least accessible to people. Snow farms, i guess can you find a way to make money in any situation, thats one of those unintended opportnities that come out of this one. You mentioned the parade tomorrow. How popular or unpopular was it to move the parade . And what are you looking forward to there . I think common sense kicked in. The streets werent quite ready. I think when the city announced it originally i think they were expecting six less inches of snow than what they got yesterday. Plus the fact is that the temperatures are going to be so bitterly cold today, i think it wouldnt have been a wise idea to get a lot of kids and folks you know standing out on the streets for hours on end, while negative 15 degrees wind chill factors were out there. The whole point is celebration, you want to do it the right way, one day wont make that big of a difference with everything shut down. Going forward, more snow is coming. Chad myers, our meteorologist said the worst thing ive heard in a long time is that its going to be cold for the next month. Do you have the resources and assets you need to keep going . So far, so good. Nice thing is though if we have problems weve got great relationships with surrounding states and also the canadian provinces, so if we have to reach out for equipment or reach out for assets we know that they can be available if necessary. But right now were still in pretty good shape relative to sand and salt and chemicals and machinery out there. The only thing right now is our people are running out of gas a little bit. We need a break to littlelet people recharge their batteries. And let suppliers get in as well. Peter judge, thank you very much for the latest. The Ripple Effect of the massive storm is still grounding air travelers. This morning hundreds of flights canceled. This on the heels of thousands of cancellations yesterday. Cnns jean casarez joins us live from new Yorks Laguardia airport. How is it looking . Well this airport is bustling with passengers today. I mean so unlike yesterday. But the big question the domino effect. Are they all going to be able to get on planes today . Now currently right now, across the country, theres 515 cancellations. Thats a far cry from yesterday. 2400 cancellations at this time. Lets look at the airports that have the major cancellations, number one on the list right here where i am laguardia with 84 cancellations, boston logan with 66 and chicagoohare at 26 im talking to people have the nightmare stories, they take it in their strides this morning. But one couple, dream vacation to st. Thomas they were canceled all day yesterday. Theyve got a hotel room in st. Thomas that is vacant and theyre having to pay for it night after night because theyre not there. Another student from florida missed a big exam yesterday. A lot of people going to florida, they tell me they want to get out of here. Its just too cold. Michaela . Yeah we dont blame them. All right, well keep watching it with you. Breaking overnight in egypt, cairo is on alert after police found a pair of bombs inside that cities airport. The devices were found in separate terminals, no arrests have yet been made. Were told Security Officials are reviewing footage. It came after a bomb detonated in a busy square in central cairo. Is cubas former leader fidel castro in declining health . Viewership peaked at 120 million during the games Fourth Quarter finish and it was the most tweeted super bowl with 28. 4 million tweets related to the game and halftime shows. Was it the weather . We couldnt go anywhere. Most of the northeast was snowed in. Second of all, was it the matchup . Hawks fans are rabid, Patriots Fans are rabid. Or was it the halftime show . I know that last years was the secondmost watched Television Event in history and this one exceeded it. Its impressive as we see the slicing of the pie of things you can watch and how, that something winds up creating a record alltime. When the nation comes together to do one thing. Watch football. Exactly. Well the debate over measles vaccinations is getting political. Well tell you the controversial things the potential president ial frontrunners are saying about vaccines. I hope youre listening. So much snow they dont know where to put it. That is the dilemma in boston. Another storm possibly coming . Were going to tell you where it could be headed. Is it coming near you . And how bad it might be. New Vidal Sassoon salonist. First, brush roots then, blend through lengths. Our most advanced system outside the salon. Its more than colour. Its a work of art. Hillary clinton wading into the debate about vaccines and measles, overnight she tweeted this the science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue and vaccineswork. Lets protect all our kids grandmothersknowbest. Her comments follow controversial statements top republicans, governors Chris Christie and senator rand paul. So lets bring in dr. Amesh adallasa adalja. Thank you so much for being here. Lets start with the science and developments that have happened overnight and well move onto the politics of the vaccine debate. A couple of interesting things have happened. The cdc has come out and said they dont know the origin of the latest outbreak of 102 cases. They dont know who started this. But they believe it might have been a tourist from overseas who visited disneyland in december. How account u. S. Protect itself from incoming tourists who may be carrying measles . The best way for the u. S. To protect itself from incoming measles from all over the world, because measles may be eliminated from the americas, but it still spreads in asia africa and europe is to have a high level of vaccination. So we have the hurt immunity built up. So when we get an infected tourist, the virus cant find a home in another host and it doesnt start off a chain of transmission. So its our vaccination rates that keep this disease from breaching our walls. Interestingly, the cdc on their website says of those 102 cases, known cases of measles, they believe somewhere between 12 and 31 of those newest cases were people who were vaccinated so what does that tell us . Well vaccination isnt 100 its the best way we have to prevent measles and it is a highly effective vaccine as opposed to for example the influenza vaccine. But we have nonresponders who wont mount the response to the vaccine and there are always going to be those nonresponders with any vaccine. So hurt immunity is so important that theyre all protected by the immune population as a whole. I want to play awe statement from rand paul considered to be a possible president ial candidate in 2016. And hes a practicing physician, heres what he just said about vaccines. Ive heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Im not arguing vaccines are bad idea i think theyre a good thing. But i think the parents should have some input, the state doesnt own your children, parents own the children and it is an issue of freedom. Hes touching on exactly what parents fear rational or irrational but hes talking about it. Can parents ever have a choice when it comes to vaccines . Or is that a bad idea . It depends upon the context and what disease youre talking about. Surely every child in the United States doesnt need to be vaccinated against japanese encephalitis or typhoid fever. But for certain diseases like measles which are highly contagious and can be fatal. It kills 145,000 children every year there comes a point where your liberty to raise your child as you wish kind of doesnt include the liberty to willfully neglect the child. And that can happen in the child of a Communicable Disease outbreak and certain disease does fall in a that category. Dr. Adalja do you think pete trigss should ever say to parents, theres a small chance that your child may suffer a vaccine injury. It does happen its a very very small fraction of people. But there is a chance there could be a Measles Outbreak and you should have your child vaccinated. It seems as though right now you have to say you must get vaccinated. Pediatricians should have those kind of risk benefit discussions with their parents on almost every medical decision including vaccines. I wouldnt say its just for the public good that people get vaccines. There is a very selfinterested action, youre protecting yourself from a disease that kills 1 in 1,000, it puts 1 in 20 in the hospital with pneumonia. This isnt something that youre only doing for other people. Youre doing it for yourself and your own child to protect them against this deadly disease. Here is what another possible president ial candidate Chris Christie had to say about vaccines and he got himself into a little bit of trouble. Listen to the governor of new jersey. All right ill read to you what it says. All i can say is that we vaccinate our children. So thats the best i can give su my opinion. Here he is now, listen to this. Allky say is that we vaccinate ours. And so you know thats the best expression i can give you my opinion. Its much more important i think what you think as a parent than what you think as a public official. And thats what we do. But i also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well. So thats the balance that the government has to decide. Dr. Adalja what you heard Chris Christie say is its important for parents to have some measure of choice. But really parents cannot have choice when it comes to vaccines right . Schools have the right to set your enrollment. If youre going to enroll your child in a school with a certain vaccine policy you have to follow that policy. Choice doesnt give someone the ability to neglect their child from contracting a Communicable Disease. Weve seen cases of parents refraining from giving children antibiotics and theyre successfully prosecuted for manslaughter. I do think with certain Communicable Diseases it rises to the level of neglect if you dont vaccinate your child. Dr. Amesh adalja. This is an ongoing debate. We want to know how you feel about it and what questions do you have about the measlesout break and vaccinations . Were going to get some answers for you from dr. Sanjay gupta in the next hour. God to have you back with us on a tuesday, an arctic freeze is plunging a huge swath of the nation into bitter cold this morning. Temperatures in the teens and Single Digits making for treacherous conditions from the midwest to the northeast. Boston has been hit especially hard. With recordsetting snowfall. More than 50 inches so far this year. That city typically sees only about 43 inches in the winter. The weather is forcing School Cancellations in boston chicago, detroit and cleveland. The victory parade for the new England Patriots being delayed until tomorrow because of concerns about the weather. So lets talk about it with our meteorologist chad myers, keeping track of the latest forecast for us. It looks better than it did out there yesterday, thats for sure. Well its colder but it is much drier. That is something and its not as windy here in new york. So temperatures are somewhere around 12 degrees, anywhere from 8 to 14 across the city this morning. It is this pattern that were in will keep us cold for many days to come. It will also keep us in the pattern that could bring us a storm every three or four days. There you see the high temperatures over the next couple of days. Not warming up much at all. One storm after another. We talked about the european model this morning and the american models. The european model bringing eight inches of snow to boston with the next snowfall. The american model is saying two to four. But you know what after you get 40 do you notice two to four . Is the fondant on top of a wedding cake i think. Were going to be in this mat earn. This is going to be the key. Its not this storm that might get us or the next storm, because the trough is in the east be allowing the cold air to pour down from the north. Every time the storm comes down the bottom of the low, it can get deep in snow here. Thats the problem, were not in just one storm pattern, but the next six. All six could bring snow no real big warmup where we see rain washing this away. Punxsutawney phil may have been right for once. Dont give in chad. Dont give in. Come in get something to drink, well check back with you. We want to talk about the Measles Outbreak that began in california and is spreading across the country. The cdc says theres 102 cases in 14 states most but not all of the cases are linked to the exposure at disneyland and they blame parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids. Breaking overnight, eight people allegedly linked to jihadi cells arrested in the suburbs of paris. Frances floor Ministry Says there are 161 ongoing investigations into terrorism there. He also announced a new counterterrorism decree that will go into effect tomorrow. More dramatic testimonies expected today in the murder trial of former new England Patriots star aaron hernandez. On the stand today, continued testimony from shania jenkins, the girlfriend of victim odin lloyd and the victims mother left the courtroom yesterday as witnesses described finding her sons body. The proof groundhogs dont just break your hope for a short winter they can break your skin. Wisconsin mayor jimmy the groundhog, look at him. Look at the malice look at the malice. I dont think its malice you put your ear in his mouth. No he said let me hear what you got about the winter and hes like, heres what i got and he bites him. Groundhogs dont whisper, hon. Now you know the main wearing the gold watch was a little slow on the pullback. The mayor soldiered on as own a politician can. If you dont bite them directly on the lips theyll continue to talk about whatever it is thats going on. Theres my case. What is your case . I put him tlup with the panda. Dont get down on pandas. But the comparison with chad myers, unacceptable. I said fugazey. Not a real chad myers. Your antipanda campaign is troubling. The u. S. Considers lethal aid to help ukraine fight pro russian rebels as we get an exclusive inside look at a key city in Eastern Ukraine now in ruins from the fighting. Sarah, this wifi calling from tmobile is the best. Yep. I can talk from anywhere in my mansion. I already have it. You sound great in my hydroponic kale garden. Receptions great in subterranean petting zoo. Crystal clear from my trophy room. All clear in my figure skating basement. Sounds great from my underground delivery room. Sorry. Its a boy. Well, im under my house. With a rabbit. Welcome back. Weve been staying on the situation in ukraine because it matters and its getting worse. Now for the first time the u. S. Is considering providing lethal defensive weapons to ukraine to help it stop pro russian rebels. And Russian Troops to be frank. Not a moment too soon. Take a look. Nick paton walsh got an exclusive look at the ground zero of the fighting in an area called donetsk, the images are shocking. Nowhere has the fighting been fiercer in the worst war to hit europe since the balkans than here donetsk, once proud, their international airport. Ukraines army is still shelling here. Despite being pushed out of this former stronghold two weeks ago, by these russianbacked separatists. Themselves heavily armed. Were moving now in an armored car towards the new terminal of the airport. Territory which the separatists have taken, but is still regularly under fire from ukrainian military. We pull in the airport longterm underground parking. Its safe but shells are occasionally landing here. The fight for her killed hundreds as ukrainians used service tunnels to hold part of the complex. The men claim these bodies were left in the ukrainian retreat. The last call for passengers on this walkway, passed months ago. These pictures from three years ago showing how it used to sparkle. Hard to imagine how just six months ago we were here flying out of donetsk, this was then a stateoftheart international terminal. Look at the destruction and how it symbolizes how far Eastern Ukraine has fallen. The war here is entering a new phase. The heaviest of weapons and the random shelling of civilians. These men blame Barack Obama Barack obama for this devastation. Russia blames nato for fomenting this war. Nato says nonsense and that many of the fighters are actually Russian Regular army. Blame, hatred and charred remains everywhere. But ukraines bright hopes of modern prosperity the gate is closed. Nick paton walsh, cnn, donetsk. Our thanks to nick for putting himself in harms way to bring you the look at the reality in ukraine. Lets bring in Lieutenant General Mark Hertling a former commanding general for europe and the 7th army. Youre not only familiar with the situation in ukraine, you know its military well and its capabilities. Were you in charge of nato troops in europe. You recently went back there. The place looks totally did when i was in donetsk this summer. How urgent is the situation there . You saw it yourself chris, when you were there doing a great job covering the airplane shootdown. What i would suggest is nick had it a little bit wrong in his report. We are not entering a new phase, we saw in november that the russians were beginning to reinforce in phase 2. That means they were bringing in advanced combined arms army. Heavy rocket artillery. Some air defense pieces technologically advanced air defense pieces. Many more drones to pinpoint Ukrainian Forces and a whole lot more mass of their forces to reinforce the separatists. Its been devastating for the Ukrainian Forces who have done a magnificent job, up to about the november of last year timeframe in defending their country. But its taken a turn for the worse. People were questioning the fight of ukraines military in exactly how Much Division was there. You said differently then and weve seen differently now. But to be honest general, it was called a Police Action when i was there during the summer. Now everybody is calling it a war. But it seems that theres still reluctance even though were hearing about the u. S. Wanting to provide equipment, theres reluctance to own up to what is actually going on there. The country may fall. The ukrainians are very proud people chris, as you probably saw when you were there. Any of us who have worked with them knew they were going to fight. And it was never a Police Action in my view. It was always combat. And the separatists were always being reinforced by russian forces. And the nato commander, general phil breedlove, a good friend of mine said the exact same thing, were past the critical point. Ukraine is trying to address the issues make fixes in their government address the military improve their economy, but theyve been a Long Time Coming in that regard and truthfully up to a few months ago, the u. S. Didnt trust them to do some of the things because of the amount of corruption in the government and military. The ukraine government definitely has its issues they are legitimate issues that ethnic russians in the eastern part of the ukraine feel underserved and are now somewhat disaffected as a result. But that said its still a sovereign entity. And how great of a risk is there to the existence of ukraine . Its about national selfdetermination. Thats what ukraine has been fighting for, against a russia that doesnt want them to have national selfdetermination. They want ukraine and other nations in europe to remain as satellite countries to russia. Its a question of is russia on the Strategic Defensive as they portray in the media where theyre saying hey were just trying to stop nato encroachment . Or are they really on a strategic offensive, trying to regain territory based on their feeling that the United States is pivoting elsewhere and they have an opening . People say, oh look dont hype the situation there. Its bad, but ukraine will be fine. This is just going to take time. Thats what weve been hearing all along. The reports from the ground are different now. Three months from now if nato doesnt get involved. If there isnt some type of big move to back off russia and shore up ukraines military where is that country . We may, it could cause a couple of different courses of action chris. I think the more likely is we might have another frozen conflict. The same kind of frozen conflict we have in maldova, in armenia in azerbaijan and georgia and several other states where russia has attempted to exceed their reach. So frozen conflict might be one, there might be a complete division of some of the provinces in Eastern Ukraine. And russia may attempt to take them over. I dont think thats going to be the case. I think more likely than not, youre going to see a struggling Ukrainian Government with russia in place. And the west turning a blind eye, unless the entire west im including western europe. Does something about this. Everybody has been ignoring it its only getting worse. General thank you very much. You certainly understand the situation on the ground and the decisions Going Forward. A lot of people are questioning it as you say, chris, in his defense, pete carroll and darrell bevel, the offensive coordinator for the seahawks, if you look at the season they were one for 5 from the one yard line when handing lynch the football. That is only a 20 success rate in that situation. And these offensive coordinators know exactly what their percentages are, what their odds are at every down and distance the low red, the high red, for that also in their defense, new england had to run out their goal line defense. They were still in a three wide receiver set. They attacked a rookie corner back. If youre in their defense, thats your thought process. It was a heck of a play made by the corner back. Malcolm butler to seal the deal for the patriots. Outstanding play. To put it into context, 114 Million People watched, the largest recorded audience for a Television Event ever. Just to give you context, this Years Academy awards were only 43 million. The olympics Opening Ceremony 31 million. The seinfeld finale was 76 million. This was 114 million. Michaela had a theory earlier that it was also because of the weather. Do you think that this was all just a great game . Or because people were snowed in . I think, you know maybe the weather had something to do with it. I do think it was a great game. I also think the playoffs have been terrific. Especially in the nfc. Youve had just one heartbreaker after another. But now i dont actually know if the ratings reflect large groups of people in front of tvs also or it just the tvs themselves. Because i mean its probably even bigger if you think about it. But no look it was just a phenomenal game. Its a phenomenal game for television. More than anything else i think the symmetry of the field, with the rectangular shape of the tv the replay the angles spectacle, its perfect. And the super bowl proves it year in year out. Ill put this for to you think about. I wonder it deflategate had driven people to see what might happen. Mark i understand did you this incredible profile of tom brady, you were here talking with us on new day. You had a chance to talk to him postwin . I havent talked to him postwin but hes busy hes in as great a demand as he ever has been. I corresponded with his fathered on sunday. Im very happy for him. I think deflategate is a complete i think its way overdone. I think it did probably drive ratings and it got people who are not normally interested in talking about football talking about it i think as far as scandal goes in the nfl, its pretty tame. And so look i think that that will blow over so to speak. But as far as brady goes i think hes a continuously good story. I think hes handled himself with class. Hes even better now. This was a huge moment for him. The biggest attraction to football as we all know as a culture is football may be better than anything else captures the american spirit the gladiator spirit the stakes all coming down. Theres so many metaphors. The excess too, especially with the nachos. This could have gone either way for braidy. If he lost he would have lost three out of six trips to the super bowl and everybody would be running him down hes past prime and doesnt stand up with the greats. But one moment one game and now, coy, you got to look at him in an entirely different way, hes up there with montana, hes up there with brad slawshaw hes got to be one of the best. Had they lost that Football Game people would have focused on the two previous super bowl losses. They would have focused on his two interceptions, because of the victory theyre focusing on the super bowl record 37 completions, his 8 for 8 goahead gamewinning drive in the Fourth Quarter. Hes a super bowl champ tied with joe montana and terry bradshaw. He broke joe montanas record with 13 touchdowns in super bowls. Hes a living lijdegend. Almost as goodlooking as you, too, coy. Do you think theres going to be fall out or shuffle or change in seattle because of the socalled worst call ever . Do you think theres going to be a change to carroll or their offensive coordinator, any of that . I dont think so this is an Outstanding Organization thats played phenomenally well great decisions all across the board. Thats the reason they were in an opportunity to get back to back to back. They did lose their defensive coordinator, hes announcing today in a press conference that he will become atlantas new head coach. There will be change but i like the way theyre running things in seattle, theyll be back. Gentlemen, mark coy, great to talk to you as always. A lot of news to get to today, lets get to it. A monster storm slamming the northeast. Put safety first, put your family first. Treat the roads with caution. Its icy, rain. Which makes the roads like impossible. Cant really see the road right now, everything is all like blurry. We dont know what causes autism for sure but we know that vaccines dont. Ive heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Measles is preventible. You should get your kids vaccinated. I have a lot of admiration for Russell Wilson. Wont let one play define his career. Was it a poor pass . I dont know. Was it a great play by butler . It was a great play by butler. This is new day, with chris cuomo, Alisyn Camerota and michaela pereira. Good morning, welcome back to new day. A huge swath of the United States at the mercy of a dangerous cold snap this morning. In the wake of heavy snow a flash freeze is emerging with temperatures in the teens and Single Digits. Making for a dangerous commute for millions. This is the snowiest week ever in boston. More than 40 inches in the last seven days. The worst part the situation is far from over there. And the entire northeast. Lets bring in begin our Team Coverage with alexandra field in boston. Alexandra, whats the latest . Chris, you said it more snow than the city has seen in a week. More snow than the city has seen in a tenday period. More than 50 inches of snow since the first day of january and frankly, thats more snow than they get here in an average winter. And now this morning, yes, more problems. Temperatures in the Single Digits causing big concerns about icing and particularly about road conditions. Thats a real issue for the city. One of the reasons that the mayor has decided to Cancel School for a second day in a row after canceling school for three days last week and now another complication. The city is going to have to wait to celebrate the patriots. They had come out here they had plowed this parade route for their super bowl champions. But at some point the lastminute decision had to be made last evening by the mayor. The thought of thousands of people standing out here in this bitter cold among the snowbanks, it simply didnt make sense and so this town will celebrate their champs, chris tomorrow. One little celebration there for sure, they could use it. And its not just the northeast feeling the pain the midwest got socked this week with snow and bitter bitter cold. Remember this . Martin savidge, one of our best trying to stay on his feet monday. Pelted in the face with ice needles and the city of cleveland. Martin is back with us again this morning. Looking better than ever. Quality hat, you look like Punxsutawney Phil there with that thing on. Whats it like today . You know i had to get this just in case my mom is watching. So it is much better today, chris, thanks very much. Although as you point out, we are suffering under the bitter cold that youre talking about. It is very very cold here. The low last night, 4 degrees, the wind though thats the real blessing. It has stopped blowing. It is still below zero with the wind chill here but its a breeze not that blast we were dealing with yesterday. All told cleveland got about anywhere from 813 inches. That means that cleveland is about five inches ahead of what is the normal seasonal snowfall. But Everything Else is get back to normal. Schools are back open the airports operating close to normal except for the flights coming from the east coast. And youve got everybody else showing up for work traffic is back to a normal pattern, so theyre recovering and recovering very well i should point out, more snow is scheduled to start falling tonight and over next couple of nights. We could get another one to three inches. Thats going to add to what theyve got here which i can show you, but right now its kind of like a walk in the park. Compared to what it was yesterday. Ill just enjoy the view here on Public Square of my home town. Back to you. Dont sit there too long youll freeze to the bench to be sure. It is a very different sight from where were you yesterday in the better bitter wind and cold, we salute you, thanks so much. So the big question everyone is asking after all of the snow and freezinge inging and inch is there any warmup in sight . Lets bring in chad myers. Is there any glimmer of hope on the horzen . A little. Maybe 37 thats about all i can do. Heres the problem, we have so much snow on the ground when the sun comes out and tries to warm us up it bounces off the sun and goes up to space. Its called elbido you dont get the warmth of a big dirt cloud which is nice and brown and warms things up. So the heat that we could have been warming us up with its gone. Were in the Single Digits in a lot of cities in the northeast. About 15 here in new york city. With a little breeze out of the northwest. Theres your warmup, 39 then 30 then 23 were in a pattern where we have the low pressure to the east the trough. And High Pressure to the west. The west is going to stay warm and the east is going to stay cold and i dont see any change in this pattern for the next 30 days. Sure we could have a brief warmup here and there, but every time a low comes by every time a clipper comes out of the north, theres going to be the chance for snow not a warmup, not rain. Even with the next snowfall coming in two to four inches for new york theres a potential with the next storm for boston with one of the european models saying more than that maybe up to eight. I dont believe it but well see. Its always a possibility that these storms because its always going to be cold here going to be cold for the next three days every single next storm could bring at least some snow like we need more. Chad we always suspected you had a strong elbido. No i i think i said it right. Exactly. Chad thanks so much. Joining us by phone is the mayor of worcester, massachusetts, joseph petty. Good morning, mr. Mayor. Good morning, how you doing today . Were doing well. Hows worcester doing today . Worcester has 17 more inches. That gives us around a little over 50. A week ago, saturday around 60 inches of snow in the last week. Oh my gosh, mr. Mayor, 60 inches of snow last week when you got 34. 5 inches worcester set a snowfall record. We did. In the 110 years, the most snow we ever received. But we handled it pretty well the streets were open on that wednesday. And streets in worcester are opened today. We do have some challenges and its cold today. We did plow last night and we sanded and salted the roads this morning and the streets are pretty much open. The big issue of course is people trying to put the snow somewhere in the residential areas and shoveling their driveways and sidewalks. Where do you put the snow. What is the answer to that . What do you do with that level of accumulation . Well we were lucky over the last four days Lieutenant Governor and the governor worked hard to get us some support in the sense we had some major trucks in here and we cleared the intersections and downtown areas of snow. Which helped out. But the streets are a little bit smaller in the neighborhoods, were trying to widen the streets and one of the big issues today is the cold and we have the homeless why got do make sure we got protocols in place to take care of people who dont have shelter and maybe sure everyone has shelter over the next two days. Around the zero mark with the wind chill factor. Its been a tough winter but the streets are open in worcester. And unfortunately i guess like i said before weve got a lot of practice in the past. Nothing new to us a couple of years ago we were named the number one snow capital in the United States per capita for snowfall. And for some reason were in that snow belt. Over the last several years. We handle it well our dpw director does a great jobth and we had 400 pieces of equipment out yesterday throughout the city. Wow. Number one snow capital. Thats a dubious distinction. But it has served you well in terms of experience. Mayor joseph petty, thanks so much for giving us a status report of worcester this morning. Thank you, have a great day today. They and the people of buffalo, new york can battle it out once and for all. Buffalo had seven feet in one fall from lakeeffect snow. When we look at the storm its not just about what its doing on the ground. It happens everywhere schools are closed families are compromised. And if you want to travel forget it. Hundreds of flights are canceled this morning, after thousands were canceled on monday. Lets get live to jean casarez at new Yorks Laguardia airport with the latest. These passengers are just rolling with the punches, the airport is packed today. So many people. But the question is will everybody get to take off . There have been so many cancellations. Im looking at the boards what i really see is the flights to boston from laguardia are canceled. All the flights to raleighdurham at this point are canceled. Now, nationwide right now, and these numbers are very fluid. Change constantly. But its 541 flights are canceled nationwide. Now if we look at airport by airport, the number one airport in the country to have cancellations is right here laguardia. 85 flights have been canceled. That doesnt seem like too many. But if you put on board 200 people youre multiplying that and it affect as lot of lives and a lot of people. Boston logan, 72 chicago ohare 27 and one of the big issues is deicing the plane. I just spoke with a pilot that said that actually can cause delays, sometimes it doesnt, but it can. Its the pilot that calls for the deicing. Theres deicing and then antiicing to make sure the deicing doesnt happen. But the big deal was yesterday. Because when it is snowing, thats when deice something critical. We want to show everybody a picture. To put a smile on your face, it was yesterday, it was jetblue. In the snow as you see one of the people thats out there working hard for all of us. Is writing hello, im cold. And i think that says it all right here from laguardia. Michaela . I really appreciated that. We were probably thinking inside the plane, my flight might be delayed. That person out there is cold in the elements. New this morning, the u. N. s highest International Court has ruled that serbia and croatia did not commit general side during the war of succession. The long lasting picker upper Hillary Clinton wading into the debate about vaccines and measles, overnight she sent out the tweet the science is clear, vaccineswork. Lets protect all our kids grandmothersknowbest. Her comments follow a statement from senator rand paul who said vaccines can cause mental disorders. Whos right . We asked to you submit your questions about measles and cnn chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta is here. Somebody we can trust to give us the straight goods, good to have you, doctor. Well get to all of your questions in a second. I kind of do want to start with this political discussion this seemingly has become. Potential president ial contenders sounding off about where they stand on the debate. I want to play rand pauls comments first so you can hear them and folks at home can as well. Ive heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Now he is you know obviously sounding off on this Hillary Clinton as well. Is there a danger dr. Gupta . Of this being politicized, a medical debate being politicized like this . Theres no question. That its dangerous and to the extent this theres some pandering happening. This is the sort of pandering that can be dangerous. Because you know rand paul is a doctor. Im sure he looks at studies, he knows the scientific method. He says he knows of many children who have wound up with mental disorders after vaccines. I dont know where hes getting that data from. And one of the old adages mick in science is that correlation does not equal causation there may be kids who have had mental disorders, that have also received vaccines around that time in life. Just because those two things happened around the same time do not make one causing the other. So again, i dont know why hes saying this. The numbers dont bear that out. The science doesnt bear that out. I would be curious, what drove those comments. Think what he he was referring to is vaccine injuries and there are a handful of people who get vaccine injuries. That happens. I think that sometimes people like to pediatricians pretend that vaccines are 100 safe. Theyre not actually 100 safe theyre safe for the community they are the right thing to do for the community, certainly. But there is vaccine injuries i think thats what he was referring to. Yeah sure he may be. I dont know what specifically was inside his head at the moment. L let me address that. When it comes to shouting from the rooftops that something is potentially dangerous, look at things like vaccines and start to compare them to things that we dont shout from the roof rooftops. Youre right, vaccines like most things you put in your body. We have another graphic that points that out, they have some potential injury rates. For vaccines its about less than one out of a million doses are you going to have a serious allergic reaction could cause a seizure or Something Like that in a child. Take aspirin, thats something that we can relate to. In all of our medicine cab in thes. 12 events per 10,000 people could cause a potential intracerebral hemorrhage. The point is that with vaccines the numbers are an exponentially smaller risk than aspirin. Were not screaming about aspirin. Thats part of the issue here. Youre right, there can be problems but not to the degree. Think you should be screaming from the rooftops and more. I dont think we should be engaging people in this paranoia. The science isnt there the practicality isnt there. I cant have my kid bring peanuts to school. But a parent has a choice whether or not to vaccinate their kids and then send them to school . Are we giving too much deference to the other side here when there really isnt one . I agree with you, chris. I dont think there is an other side here frankly. We get so used to the discussion about this side and that side. The two sides could just be simply the right side and the wrong side. We dont know what causes autism. I mean thats fair to say. Were not sure of the Scientific Community what causes autism. But we know that vaccines do not. And i think its just important to say that as succinctly as i just did and not to say look im going to delay the vaccines, you hear doctors coming on saying its okay let the parents choose. Im a parent i have three kids i made the choice i got next vaccinated on schedule on time to protect their health and the health of the people around them. Theres a lot of emotion in the debate on both sides, we recognize that i want to turn to you vooer questions, youve been great about sending in the questions. I think part of what you just said might have answered some of this. I want to you go a little further this is a question from Bradshaw Lauren bradshaw. Suppose you have a friend who is on the fence about vaccinations. What simple, easytounderstand advice would you give them . First of all i would say that they are safe. They are effective. When it comes to effectiveness, we talk about measles as a disease that was nearly eliminated in this country back in 2000 and is back again. And what about mumps . 99 reduction in cases, dip they aria cases. I would also say that in terms of their safety i showed you the graphic a while ago, comparing their safety to things like aspirin. They can be safer than things that are much more common. One other thing, a little bit of a nuanced point. Looking at the way we used to vaccinate in the past. How we vaccinate now. Look how autism rates have changed since that time. If we can put the graphic up. Its showing in the past look back there in the 1960s, we gave a lot more in terms of vaccine load to kids bodies. 3500 times more. And at some point sort of in the late 90s, we started to give lower doses of vaccines to try do get the same result. Throughout that time autism rates continued to go up. Despite the fact that the vaccines themselves have gone down in terms of amounts, autism rates have gone up. There is no link. So one could make the arguments that vaccines have been protective against autism. Its really theres nothing there. And i worry about that as a father and i gave my kids vaccines i think thats important. Youve been teaching me about this for years, well before i got to cnn. Autism is diagnosed a lot more now than it ever was in the past. The spectrum has gotten broader and broader. I again as i told you, sanjay i dont see the merits of a debate i covered the wakefield study. It was bogus, he got unlicensed because of it. And yet it continues. Lets go with dealing with the immediate. Lets go to this question if youre immune are you immune if youre an adult and had your vaccines as a child, do we as adults need to get a booster shot . Should kids who are ten and have had all vaccinations get a booster shot . The way it works now is you typically get your first shot around one year of age. 12 months of age. That should give you about 95 protection. You could have a second shot within a month or two after is that if you wanted. But the way the schedule works is that right around the time Kids Start School they get another shot. That takes them up to about 99 effective. To your point earlier, nothing zbbing to 100 effective. But thats pretty good. That should last you the rest of your life. You should not need a booster shot notice you know youre coming in contact with people who have measles, people overseas working in camps may get booster shots. If youre unclear, i cant remember did i get the shots at all . Did i get one . You can go to the doctor and get a blood test that shows how many antibodies the infectionfighting cells. Can you find that out with a simple blood test if youre unsure. Heres our last question it comes from mike miller. I think it speaks to everything that youve been trying to debunk. Given all the stats that youve shown heres his question why are people so paranoid of the vaccines . You know thats a great question and like most things in life i dont think i would paint everybody who is reluctant to take the vaccines as having the same reasons why. Chris brought up a paper written by dr. Wakefield back in 1998. That was the paper that a lot of people pointed to that said theres a link between vaccines and autism. As chris said the paper was subsequently debunked. Dr. Wakefield who ive interviewed before. Hes subsequently discredited. There was nothing there. But it started a firestorm of activity around that. Theres also people who have profound distrust of the pharmaceutical industry no matter what. To be fair the pharmaceutical industry hasnt always engendered the most trust with some of these things. But with regard to vaccines theres been a lot of now independent studies, 75 or so studies, theres been a big metaanalysis of 1. 2 million children saying we dont know what causes autism but we know that vaccines do not. I think the third, theres people who just simply believe that look because of herd immunity i dont need to get my kid vaccinated. The problem with that sort of thinking is that more and more people think like that the herd immunity goes away and you start to see what youre seeing now. What we saw in california that spread across the nation. We love thaw cut through the noise for us dr. Sanjay gupta. We appreciate it. If you still have questions, use the vaccineqs. Well tell to answer that through the day on cnn. The science should point the way on that here is one thats not going away one play decided super bowl xlix and the fallout is only growing. Temperatures in the teens and Single Digits are the new problem. Turning leftover snow into thin sheets of ice. Creating hazards for the morning commute. Boston still digging out from mounting snowfall totals. Rewriting the record book in the wrong way. Almost 48 inches in the last ten days. That beats the old mark by almost a foot. Look at this the weather forcing schools in boston chicago, detroit, cleveland, all the to call off classes. And the victory parade for the new England Patriots going to have to delay it at least until tomorrow. For the latest, we go to meteorologist chad myers. Keeping track of the latest forecast for us. We need to buoy our spirits, we need a libido forecast. Its elbido. Not libido. Libido i got it. Anyway its because the sun is so shiny the ground is so white that the heat from the sun goes back if youre just joining us we had quite a good laugh about that last hour. Anyway the problem this morning is that it is cold and its cold on your pets feet. Its cold on your face and its also cold on the roadways even roads that have been salted have been refreezing overnight. Because of temperatures like this. Like at montpelier automobily, schenectady, 8 below zero thats what it feels like what you feel like what your pet feels like. Check on the elderly as well. New york city up to 39 tomorrow. Then we go back to 30 29. By the end of the week back down to 16 in boston. The trough is in the east and that every storm that comes by will be a snow maker. There may be six storms still to come in february. One every three to four days. And all of them will produce at least a little bit of snow. The next one coming through is an Alberta Clipper. Clippers mean they move very fast. Thats what an Alberta Clipper means, like a clipper ship. It doesnt put down a lot of snow but it does put down snow no chance of rain here, two to four inches for new york city by the end of the week the same for boston. A potential for a bigger snow event for boston maine, if the storm blows up like the european models is predicting. I dont see that happening. Well have to see, i believe the storm continues out to sea and continues to move away. But also continues to keep us in the deep freeze. Michaela it is really cold out here. Not as cold as yesterday because i was wet and windy, but the temperatures today are cold 15 right now. Yesterday it was 30 it feels 10 degrees warmer. No wind no sleet and snow well take it though right . Chad well check back with you later. The Measles Outbreak that originated in disneyland is spreading. Remember tony manero who gets hid hit by the dad and says i spend a lot of time on my hair. Lets keep running the video over and over again. Theres nothingky do to top that. Were going to go inside politics this morning. Before i do, i hope you guys get the sanjay gupta conversation online as soon as possible. Thats the substance of the vaccine debate and people should see it and listen to the good doctor. You guys had a great conversation and he got it just right. With me this morning for the politics on the vaccination debate. Julia pace and ron fournier of the national journal. The conversation was going to happen anyway. If youre running for president , you should be prepared to be asked just about anything. Your favorite color, vaccination policy anything you want a Nuclear Football . Anything is fair game. Chris christie in london yesterday, asked if vaccines are a good thing or bad thing, he splits the difference. All i can say is we vaccinate ours. And so you know thats the best expression of my opinion. Its much more important i think what you think as a parent than what you think as a public official. And thats what we do. But i also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well. So thats the balance that the government has to decide. Its that part that he says parents need to have some measure of choice. Christies office in new jersey put out this statement, to be clear the governor believes vaccines are an important Public Health protection and with the disease like measles, theres no question kids should be vaccinated. The at the same time different states require different degrees of vaccination, which is why he was calling for a balance in which ones governments should mandate. Thats Chris Christie. Lets bring in rand paul in anna combative interview with cnbc on a number of subjects hes an eye doctor listen to him here saying he has some questions about vaccines. Ive heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Im not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. I think theyre a good thing. But i think the parents should have some input. Again, the staff comes in to do some cleanup. Sergio gore rand paul spokesman saying dr. Paul believes that vaccines have saved lives and should be administered to children. His children were vaccinated and he believes many vaccines should be voluntary. And like most medical decisions between the doctor and the patient, not the government. Should they be prepared to give clearer answers, i give the government distrust. Especially on the republican side, the conservative side. But when it comes to your children and measles, its a nobrainer. I think its a fair conversation one because it is something thats topical. Two, do you have several states that are debating this on a state level about what kind of regulation should be in place for sending your children to school. So there is a political government aspect to this. It does show you, though how what you say as a potential president ial candidate can have so much more resonance than what you say even as a governor. What Chris Christie said is largely the same as what he has been saying in the state of new jersey where this is a big topic. But when you say this and youre potentially running for president , you have to be a bit more careful with your language and he should have been better prepared. When you saw them walk this back. You can tell they got nervous about the message this may have been sending. On rand paul weve been talking about this a little bit. The difference between rand paul and Chris Christie rand paul is a drxt if youre going to be saying things like i know of children who have been affected by this you should have evidence to back that up and as far as we know there is no evidence. Thats the thing, obviously Chris Christie. Whenever you have to have a statement that says to be clear, you know youve messed up and are maybe not ready to be a president ial candidate, yet. Rand paul literally drew a connection between autism and vaccines. There is no connection between the two. I have an autistic boy. I dont know how he got autism i know he didnt get it from vaccines. Its these gentlemens job in wanting to be a leader to educate the public. They should be making clear to people get your kids vaccinated and not be pandering. If you want to make a distinction, les say for example, it came up in the last president ial cycle, measles, mumps, kids should be vaccinated. Hpv, should the state mandate that that came up you have to be specific. You bettor be specific or you end up here. Dont pretend theres laenk, theres not a link. Our conservative friend Eric Ericsson writes this in red state. Saying this is only a political issue because the press, having failed to paint the gop as antiwomen wishes to now paint the gop as abtsty tyantiscience. I suspect that some reporter will ask republican candidates about the global flood and a man named noah. If they have clear answers, its over. If youre going to run for president , you have to answer anything who is your favorite team. Whats ur favorite color and serious Public Health issues like vaccine. This isnt one of these issues where you have a clear line between democrats and republicans necessarily on this. There are republicans who are running for president who have come down strongly on the side of having your children vaccinated. This is not an issue to debate. Theres nothing to debate. We know theres not a link between vaccines and autism. If you make that link youre going to get hammered. What rand paul did in particular is not worthy of the senate let alone a doctor. To be fair democrats saw an opening they were criticizing rand paul and Chris Christie all day yesterday. In 2008 as a candidate, president obama said he understood there were people under there suspicious about the autism thing and he needed to heed the suspicions. Hillary clinton tweeted saying the science is clear, the sert round, the sky is blue and vaccines work and she added grandmother knows best. A nice touch there. She also in 2008 to be fair to the were beating up the republicans, she also in 2008 said there are some out there who fear im sorry, john that doesnt excuse what the republicans are saying now yes, obama and hillary were wrong then. Republicans are wrong now, and they should know better than to be wrong now. They have to stick with the facts. I think thats a good point. When you go back to what obama said in particular i mean to talk about again why this is not just a clear line between republicans and democrats on this issue. A lot of the people have been pushing the sort of Antivaccine Movement are celebrities, liberal, hollywood types, that was a big donor base for obama. I cant say for certain he was pandering to them at that point. But that is kind of the community thats been involved in this as well. Ill will say he was pandering. But anybody who is pandering now, should get slapped. For all of the firsttime president ial candidates out there, were going to try to be fair. Were not perfect. If you see something you dont like, send it my way, ill take it but if youre going to run for president , specificity, give a long answer if you have to. Dont cut things short. Spell it out clearly. And conversations like this dont happen. Julia and ron, thanks for coming in. Back to you, theres big votes coming up on the little this week. Homeland security funding in the senate has a big vote today. The house is going to try to repeal obamacare and lets listen to a little sound from the president , he says i has a veto pen. He likes having athletes down at the white house, look at his latest weapon. This is better than the veto pen. Always good to have a hockey stick and im going to make your colleagues mad when i say this but first hes going to have the patriots down and maybe next year with the stanley cup, the bruins. Ouch. Those are fighting words here john. Chris cuomo is not going to like that. All right. Thanks so much great to see you. Instead of handing off the ball to marshawn lynch, the seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson passes and tosses a pick. Seconds left in the game. Bewildered fans cant stop asking why . Why didnt seattle run the ball . Easy to say now, right . Thats the way the game and life often works, something our next guest understands all too well. Cut to final minute. 1987 afc championship game Cleveland Browns denver broncos. Browns star running back Earnest Byner, one of the best running for a touchdown and then draw to byner, Earnest Byner fumbled the ball. And denver has recovered oh my. The browns lose the game. The play in infamy as the fumble. Earnest byner joins us now, he went on to become a twotime pro bowler. A super bowl champ. Hes also the author of a book that is more relevant than ever called everybody fumbles. Mr. Byner, a pleasure to have you on the show. I loved watching you play the game. You played it the right way. How many times in 14 seasons did you fumble . Too many i can tell you that. The reality is that you know were going to make mistakes in the game we play to be perfect. But the reality is were going to make mistakes. But you know you got to learn, you got to grow. And you got to make headway. Your fumbling stats are better than many. Thats the point. Is that it doesnt matter about your stats. I looked at them compared to emmet submitmith you look pretty good compared to him and hes one of the best. But its not the numbers, its about what people remember. You wound up leaving the team after the following season. Had you a great career then with the redskins. You actually came back to the browns. And now youre in their circle of legends. For the Cleveland Browns. How long did it take for the fans to get over it or did they . Never. I mean the reality is you never get over Something Like that. But you, you actually be able to take the energy from the experience and use it to actually grow to teach. But also to move forward, once all of this happened to us i mean the reality is you know theres going to be some other experiences that we have to go through. And those experiences, the past experiences, the negative ones are actually the ones that help to us get ready for the next experience. I was iblable to go through a spiritual conversion once i got to washington and was able to forgive myself. One of the travesties of the playoffs is its almost like a death sentence if you make a key mistake in those games, it has a tendency to stick with you even longer. People have the ability to remind you of many the mistakes. And they will take the opportunity. So this was a big deal for you, forget about the field. But when i hear you talking about it now and looking at what the books about. This ran you down personally for a long time. And as you say, caused a spiritual conversion. How plaguing was it before you learned how to deal with it . It was the reality is it ran for, for a long time. It weakened me. It made me different in a lot of aspects of my life. It made me actually a little bit subconscious. And thats one of the things that you know i tried to pass on to people. You know through the book. But also through the different speaking engagements, through different interactions. You know dealing with kids. You pass on you pass on the fact that you know youre going to struggle. But dont let anybody else decide how you look at the experience. Because you know we always we always are trying to be perfect as players. And the worst thing about the playoffs is youre not able to actually get back on the field. If you fumble one game. And get past that. If you fumble during the regular season you the next game youre good to go. Is that fair . Its definitely fair. Its just part its part of the reality. One of the things that we get caught you up in also is what we call the blame game. Somebodys got to be pointed out. Somebody has got to say that you messed it up. You messed it up for everybody. You know the dean huguely makes that point all the time. But in reality, theres all kinds of mistakes many layers to my book and many layers in also winning and losing. Whether its fair or not, tough learn how to deal with it thats what your book is about, to learn how to deal with the failures in life. Its called the fumble. The quarterback is only 26 years old, Russell Wilson. He tweeted two things i want to put up there. He says every setback has a major comeback and he said at 26 years old i wont allow one play or one moment to define my career. Ill keep evolving. Thats good news. Critical. Can you avoid the question everybody else is ouldnt say that. I believe if it was me i would actually have given the ball to marshawn particularly because we had another timeout but, also the fact that you want to not give new england the ball back with a lot of time as well. You have the ability to run the time off the clock. Second guessing is one of the things that i try not to do because i was a coach at one point. I wanted to try to get back into the lead and the reality is theres a lot of what ifs. New england won. Nobody has pointed to the fact that there were some interceptions, mistakes that they made. Thats the nature of the game. Mistakes. Absolutely. Thats part of the realities that we deal with. In this league when youre trying to overcome stuff, winning covers a lot of sins. Thats true. Thats true. When you lose everybody wants to point the finger. Thats one thing that i really want to try to avoid. Thats one thing that i put out there for people in the book. Appreciate it. Its needed right now. Ill tell you, if the seahawks had a beast like you in the backfield, maybe they would have been more ready to hand the ball off. Earnest bien ner. Marshawn lynch not handing it off to him, got to give it to him. If its me i give the ball to marshawn lynch. I do. Your a a running back. Take care. Alisyn . Announcer this is new day with chris cuomo, Alisyn Camerota and michaela pereira. Good morning. Welcome to your new day. Tuesday, february 3rd. Just after 8 00 in the east. Temperatures in the midwest and northeast are plummeting turning the snow on the ground to ice. You know what that means. It is a very dangerous commute for millions. The freezing temperatures leaving no time for snow to member melt especially in massachusetts where new records have been set. This is the snowiest week ever in boston with more than 40 inches in the last seven days. More snow could be heading for a direct hit on new england. Alexandra field is in boston. How is it this this morning, alexandra . Reporter good morning, alisyn. Its simply put a brutal commute this morning. Because of the bitter temperatures because of the icy roads and because of all of the obstacles that are still in peoples paths. This is still some of the aftermath of a storm that has claimed ten lives in its path. Overnight a fatal deep freeze stunning the northeast. A dangerous trifecta of high winds, over a foot of snow in some parts and below freezing temperatures from new jersey to maine. Were asking people if you can stay off the roads. Reporter boston declared a snow emergency once again setting thea record for the snowiest week. Ice litters the roadways. In new jersey its icy rain which makes the roads like impossible. Reporter the new England Patriots parade postponed. And scores of schools closed. Many not for snow but its more of an ice day. Concerned about the driveways, sidewalks, the areas of students are getting on the bus. Reporter in maine wind gusts produced bitterly cold wind chills up to 20 degrees below zero. Ive seen a lot of people slip and fall. Ive seen the buses slip back down the street. Reporter other states dropped to the Single Digits. Cant really see the road right now. Everything is all like blurry. Reporter west of boston oh. Reporter refresh rouse conditions on the road causing these teens to lose control of an atv sliding into a parked car. In ryan new york a mini van losing control on a major highway careening into an accident killing the other two drivers. Horrible. Horrible. People have to slow down. Reporter in vermont several snow plows were hit while trying to clear roadways. One slammed by a passing 18wheeler. Another driver was trapped for 40 minutes after hitting a plow truck and had to be removed with the jaws of life. Treat the roads with caution. If you have to go out, go slow. Reporter this morning this Street Corner that im standing on should be filled with thousands of people. In fact the parade route was plowed in anticipation of the patriots homecoming but late last night a lastminute decision was made that even if the roads were ready, concerns about the ice and cold were too much. No reason to put people out here today. Well have to wait for that celebration until tomorrow. Yeah if it ever stops snowing they can get the celebration going there. Alexandra, thanks so much for the report. The deep freeze stretches beyond the northeast. If you were watching new day yesterday you will remember martin savidges live reports from a very windy cleveland. The city getting slammed by more than a foot of snow. Lets check back in with martin savidge. He is again, in cleveland where the temperatures we understand have taken a tumble this morning. Martin lower temperatures but less wind. Hows that treating you . Reporter let me tell you exactly how thats treating me and that is to quote Barry Manilow as i so often do when im on this fine program, looks like we made it. In other words, its a much better day in cleveland, ohio. Thank goodness because, one, it snopd snowing but the wind stopped blowing. It is bitter cold colder than yesterday, but with the reduced winds it is well i wont say quite a walk in the park it is a lot easier. Still a rough go. Walking across the street hazardous endeavor but people are going back to work. The schools are back open again. The airport is pretty much back to normal with the exception of flights coming from the east. They got about 8 to 13 inches of snow. Five inches ahead of the regular snowfall for the season. More snow on the way. Overall, they are recovering. Theyre getting back to work. Its cleveland. Its winter. And now theyll focus on just looking forward to spring. So were doing okay. Back to you guys. You know martin your hat doesnt work as well if you hold it. You actually need to put it on your head. Reporter i know. And im going to go see mom next so i say farewell to cleveland. Hello, mom. Im going o visit. Thats beautiful. Consider me your surrogate mom telling you to put your hat on. Martin thanks so much for that. Learning more about him. Fanilow, didnt know that. Get back to the storm. How long is this bitter bitter cold going to last . Lets talk to cnn meteorologist chad myers in columbus circle. Are we done with the snow . Any reprieve in sight . Reporter i dont think we get done with any snow until april. Give me some hope . Reporter the suns going to come out today. Hows that . Ill take it. That sounds like a good thing. When the sun sets as it melts the snow on the roadways will then allow the roadways to freeze tonight. Theres not any Silver Lining in this. I know theres a couple of pieces of lining in my coat and i would expect you to bundle up today, but please bundle up the pets if youre going to have them out for any length of time. They dont know theyre cold until its too late. Take care of the pets and elderly today. Never assume that that car thats coming at you as a pedestrian can stop as youre in the crosswalk, too, as things freeze up again tonight. Theres your good news michaela. Tomorrow 30 what that says 9 . Then 30 then 23. Back into the deep freeze. Even chicago, the highs only going to be 11. 11. Thats the high. The morning lows will always be below freezing. Morning lows well below zero. So the refreeze that occurs every single night will be a problem. There goes the next storm system that will bring some light snow. Its a clipper. A quickmoving storm. 2 to 4 inches across parts of the midwest all the way through the northeast. European model predicting more snow for boston. Somewhere around 8 inches of snow by the end of the week. So far im not a believer. Ill have to keep watching that one. Im a hopeless polyana. I all the want to see the brightness. We need a little reprieve. 36 will feel downright balmy. Thank you. Reporter it feels warmer in the studio than out here. Thats something. Thats very true. All right. So we know the winter storm has brought ice and bitter cold both of which are greatly impacting the city of new london connecticut. A city hit quite hard by last weeks storm. Joining us by phone, the mayor of new london my home away from home. Mayor daryl justin fenizio. Good to talk to you. Good to talk to you. The drifts were higher. How did you fare this time around . We got hit with another good blast yesterday but our dpw crews never stopped. They went into action a day before the blizzard. They never let up all through last weekend, all through yesterdays storm and today by a miracle our roads are own, our schools are opening, our government buildings are opening and without their hard work it just would not be possible. Your crews were working around the clock last week and it sounds like theyre back at it again. Sounds like a onetwo punch. Adding insult to injury. How are you doing on resources . Got enough salt et cetera . We have enough resources but the resource you cant quantity phi is the heart that these guys have shown. You know our local team won the super bowl on sunday but these crews that are out there on the roads, theyre the real new England Patriots. If people could see them in action they would have a new respect for what these Public Servants are doing for us. My heart goes out to our crews here in new london but all the crews across new england who have been hitting this nonstop for over a week now. Nothing like seeing those plows coming around the corner when youre snoetd inwed in. Its like the cavalry is coming. Theyve arrived. The schools, the kids have been out of school for a week. This is the first time back in a week. So theyre back open today and kids went back to school today . They are back open today. We had a potential to open on friday but the decision was made not to because a lot of our streets are narrow. We didnt want to force an opening for one day of school in the middle of all of this with kids walking down the middle of the road while plows are trying to plow. Superintendant erred on the side of Public Safety and i think that was the right decision. When we were there you were erring on the side of Public Safety. You had a travel ban locally and you were proud to say that there were very very few accidents in that time. What is your biggest concern Going Forward in the next 24 to 48 hours . Well people here responded to the travel bands, the parking bands. We kept the schools closed. As a result thats why were digging out. Thats why we havent had as many accidents. Thats why we havent had any deaths and we want to keep it that way. So now that the roads start to look passable people need to be cautious when they get out there on the roads to drive slow. Even if a road looks clear, it may be just a sheet of black ice and thats obviously going to get worse in the evenings this week as some melting occurs during the day and then the roads refreeze at night. So yes, were getting back to normal but go slow. Be safe. Wise words from mayor finizio. You invited me when i was last there to come back in the summer. I promise ill do that. I think its a very beautiful community. Thank you for joining us. Youll be able to see the ground. Youll love it. What a concept. Thanks for joining us. Take care. Another implication here about all of this bad weather. You think you have a flight to catch this morning . Call the airline. You probably dont. As i say that many heads are nodding and shaking at airports all over the east coast. That massive storm that hit the northeast is impacting travel everywhere along this coast. Hundreds of flights already scrapped for today. Lets get to jean casaras live at laguardia. Jean, how are people handling it . Reporter people are handling it well. Theres a lot of happy travelers today. Theyre getting their boarding passes going through security. Even pilots are ecstatic. My flights on time one pilot told me. Doesnt mean there arent cancellations. This board, theyre really sporadic. Greensboro is delayed. Theres a lot of on times, but all the flights to montreal are canceled today. Nashville is canceled today. Also delays to tampa. So its really hit or miss right here and there is that Ripple Effect that domino effect because if you were canceled yesterday, then you might not get on a plane today. Want to show everybody where the leading cancellations are. Laguardia where i am now, that is the leader of the country for cancellations coming in at 85. And then beyond that its boston logan at 72 chicago ohare at 27. And i think the major concern with travelers here are those that need to get back to work need to get back to school and some people are paying for a hotel room on that dream vacation and that hotel room is empty because they cant get there. But we want to end on something. You know we talk about travelers, but what about the people that work for us that are standing out in the cold making these plane travels happen. Look at the jetblue handler yesterday in the snow. He wrote, i am cold. Hello. Just telling everybody im here but, yes, it is brutal out there. Michaela . Thats fantastic. We love seeing that. It certainly made the rounds on social media. Thanks. Violence escalating once again in Eastern Ukraine. We have to deal with this measles situation because the cdc says there are now more than 100 confirmed cases of measles in 14 states across the u. S. Remember 2000 they said there was no more measles and the reasons was because there was herd immunity because of vaccines. What does that mean . Well the cdc says people arent getting vaccinated as much and as a result kids are going to get sick adults are going to get sick. Lets discuss this. Its urgent enough that republican congressman tim murphy is holding a vaccinehearing on vaccine effectiveness. Good morning. Youre talking the flu vaccine and measles vaccine. You have a common group of issues involved. Politicians are getting involved not the way you are productively but theyre talking about it. Chris christie and rand paul. Lets listen to what they said. All i can say is we vaccinate ours but i also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well. So thats the balance that the government has to decide. I heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking, normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines. Theyre both republicans, youre a republican. Rand paul is trying to decide which way he wants to go, but when you look at this issue are they pandering or is there a basis for skepticism about the measles vaccine . I think the issue with vaccines and whether or not mercury that used to be put in vaccines over ten years ago has an effect on autism has been repeatedly dispelled. Lancet lancet magazine published an article said that scientists that published that falsified his data. Theres no that link. We are very very concerned about the increase rise in autism and we should feel compassion and it should drive us to do the right science in dealing with vaccines ing but i dont want us going down the wrong road. There are a couple of issues that are important. Primarily the ineffectiveness of the flu vaccine where we may have 50,000 deaths this year and then of course it will lead over to other questions people have about measles and not getting a vaccine. Would he hope that that doesnt lead to some deaths. Theres chances of that. Its growing at twice the rate of last year measles, and its about 10 times the rate its about over the last ten years. Theyre both big concerns. Right. Lets unpack it a little bit. Both of their campaigns, Christies Office and pauls office both came out and made corrective statements that you know really adhered much more to conventional thinking which is kids should get vaccinated especially for the measles, but that goes to why we are engaging in this paranoia. Why are we doing this . Why are we presenting this like there is a debate as to whether or not you should get your kids vaccinated and saying parents should have a choice. Well they do have a choice but should you think ever about not vaccinating your kids unless the kid has a specific immune issue . I think the science is pretty clear that says theres a greater value to having a vaccination done for whatever that is. And the other risks that people are talking about simply have not been found in any scientific study, period. And i think it is important for people to get vaccinated. What im concerned about is when we dont get the vaccines the harm is much greater. You know when we have were going to be asking the cdc and others today how did they mess up this reading of the flu vaccine when they knew last september it wasnt going to be effective. Thats a different issue, right, congressman . Thats not about lets not get vaccinated for the flu, thats about the effectiveness of the flu and what we know and what we should do to prevents. In each case what i want to see the cdc do is communicate to the public they need to have these things done and tell people the scientific reasons. The silence is a huge problem when you see 100 cases coming out of disneyland alone and association there. Measles can spread just from the air, flu can do those things too. Cdc needs to be out front with sound information. Heck when we had the ebola issue, you know they were on the air every few minutes talking about it. They need to be doing a lot more with public factual information so it does not become a scare. Now when you have the flu vaccine not being that effective it fuels skepticism about getting vaccines in the first place. Exactly. It doesnt work why would i get that even though any vaccine you have is going to make you much less likely to get sick. So what do we do here with the measles situation . Because, you know its being presented as a debate and ive been saying all morning, i cant have my kid bring Peanut Butter to school right . Right. Theres a presumption someone has an allergy. You have much better risk of measles but were not making that mandatory. You bring up a good issue. A little bit of bad science goes a long way that creates a myth and legend that creates more harm. In the energy and Commerce Community which i serve, theres a hearing and people on both sides of the aisle have made mistaken statements about the impact of vaccines and developmental disabilities. I work with many a child with developmental disabilities. Ive seen all sorts of things out there from Food Allergies to special diets to even Corporal Punishment as a way of dealing with autism. None of those things bear out. What we have to do is focus on doing the right thing but not these scares based upon no science. Look what we do know is that the saturation of vaccines have gotten much less right . Were much more effective at administering vaccines than we used to be. The number of diagnoses of autism has gone way up as the definition of it and the spectrum of it has broadened. People have to understand those aspects as well. Let me ask you, what do you do with the cdc to get them better on the flu vaccine. You say they face challenges. What are they and how do we overcome them . Around march of last year they showed up with 17 of the miss rate. It wasnt going to be effective. Something new was developing. By september they knew 50 , it had grown considerably. Cdc made a determination World Health Organization said in the Southern Hemisphere lets vaccinate people against this other flu. They maintained in the northern hemisphere. I think they had time to make a change in this. The fact that seniors in particular are very high risk for illness of the flu and death, that they should have done more early on. They could have developed an alternate vaccine. They did in the past in 2009. They didnt do that. Weve got to get to the bottom and say who made this decision . What was this based on . Where was the science there . Now we see the harms coming out. If it deals with the issue of the credibility of the cdc and their statements their silence on one hand and giving statements that are weak on the other. Representative tim murphy this is important stuff. Well monitor the hearing today. Thank you for joining us on new day with some advance notice. Thank you. Mich over to you. Former cuban leader fidel castro resurfacing. Cubas staterun media claiming these are new pictures of castro youre about to see. They are the first images of him in almost six months. Take a look at that. Cnns Patrick Ottman is live from havana. Patrick, why now . Reporter thats a great question. Really the reason is the rumors just wouldnt go away. Of course, these are the rumors that have been swirling now for months that fidel castro was dead was in a very poor state of health and that was the reason he hadnt commented on the landmark deal between cuba and the United States to normalize relations. Even when fidel castro did publish letters and articles talking about that deal people still didnt really believe it. The article today mentions that saying that people here in cuba were anxious. It seems very clear that the government and fidel castro wanted to allay some of those fears, wanted to really let cubans in particular know that the former cuban leader is alive and well. These images that we see really seem to demonstrate that. These are 21 images. I dont remember ever a time when weve gotten so many Images Released of fidel castro showing him very engaged, listening, talking, holding a threehour chat with a University Leader here. And really talking about a wide variety of subjects. Of course will this make all the rumors about fidel castro and his health disappear . Probably not. At least for the moment we expect the rumors that fidel castro is in ill health not doing well to probably subside at least for the time being. Michaela . Patrick, im going to take it for one second because the newspaper that hes reading, thats significant, right . It shows images of the alan gross cuban spy prisoner exchange. Reporter absolutely and it helps us verify as much as we can because, of course all information we get from fidel castro, all the images we get come from the cuban government which is known to manipulate images. The three spice who were released as part of that deal that allowed alan gross to be freed, so we know that happened after december. It seems to fit with the time frame that the student writes about in the article today. Of course we have no way of independently confirming it but we have to say here that our sources have been telling us to hear more from fidel castro. That could include more from fidel castro about the relations going on to normalize cuba and u. S. Relations after 50 years of bad blood. Thanks so much. Here we go with the five things you need to know for your new day. Number one, deep freeze is taking aim at the midwest and northeast. Now often that could mean supporting a charity, but these days charity can mean many things so were going to break down some options for when youre looking to give. Thats what this impact your world is about. Reporter charity seems pretty straightforward, right . You give money to an organization they take that money, make sure it gets where it needs to go. Simple enough. Well as it turns out, charity like most things is more complicated than it seems. First off, pretty much anyone can raise money these days either using a crowd funding site like go fund me. Or crowdsourcing. Many operate like an investment fund. They make a profit on your dollar so they can make it go farther. In fact thats how some Nonprofit Ceos justify those hefty salaries. They say theyre very good at squeezing the most out of your donations so they deserve to be paid. Like that . Thats how it is. Confused . Maybe you should be because we havent even gotten to the socalled Venture Capital philanthropy. Thats wherein stead of giving money to a university doing Cancer Research they might invest in a private company studying a cure. Different approaches but all with the same goal making your donation more efficient in theory at least, but the truth is when it comes to efficiency not all charities are created equally. Before you donate, go online. Do a little research. Wont hurt you. You find out exactly where your donation is going. Check out how your nonprofit uses its money, how effective it is. They should tell you how many cents on every dollar they put to the cause. After all, if youre going to give away your hard earned dollars, you want to know that the charitys out there working as hard as possible for those who need them the most. Great advice chris. In a new interview with cnns fareed zakaria, president obama again refuses to call isis an islamist terror group so does the president s reluctance to label isis as radical islamists hurt the fight against them . Lets dig deeper on this with dr. Quanta ahmed. Shes the author of in the land of invisible women. Let me play for you what exactly president obama said about why he doesnt want to label these terrorists. Listen to this. I dont quibble with labels. I think we all recognize that this is a particular problem that has roots in muslim communities. We do ourselves a disservice in this fight if we are not taking into account the fact of the overwhelming majority muslims reject this ideology. So what do you think of his rationale there . He says he doesnt quibble with labels but our Administration Currently is whole marked by an inability to talk about the language or regulate the language in which were describing these problems. Theyre describing it . Hes in a difficult and sensitivity position. He represents our country in all kinds of diplomatic situations where he is engaging in islamist governments. Iran is an example. The United States was the first to recognize the Muslim Brotherhood elective. Is that why he doesnt want to label it . It may be one reason. He also makes a legitimate observation, which is that he is reluctant as the leader of the United States to give the impression that all muslims are responsible for this extremism. That i share with him, but we have to name the ideology however problematic the name is as islamists because it truly has based its 20th century origins in my religion and that reality is something that has to be exposed. Islamism is not a religion thats for muslims to explain. They are conducting a nonviolent assault on our values. This is heady stuff for americans to wrap their brains around. This is a newish conversation. Are we getting too caught up in labels . A very fair point. I think that its more than labels. A basic concept we have to recognize. The United States is imperilled internationally as for instance france was recently at the hands of a totalitarian ideology. Totalitarianism is something that americans understand. They remember communism, which is still vital in some places in the world. They remember naziism. Islamism is simile totalitarian. What that means is it seeks to control the lives and regulations of individuals absolutely. In total control and must manufacture a cosmic enemy at its center which is usually antisemitism. Thats true of nazi totalitarianism and its true of islamist totalitarianism. The game theyre playing, it is a game because at the end of the day picking what words to use politically is about how to position yourself how to make sure you dont expose yourself to enough criticism but its having the reverse effect. Part of it is that all these words sound the same. Islam, islamic, islamist islamism. People hear them. They say theyre the same thing. I get that there are distinctions. What is wrong with saying this is radical extremist islam . It is islam. They believe it is whether you want to disagree with it or not as a muslim yourself . Thats a great and brave question. Certainly when were having this conversation in our living rooms it is reasonable to say the actions of boko haram or isis represent a radicalized version of islam. My problem with it is it means that only violent manifestations of extremist expression of my religion are identified as a threat. Nonviolent manifestations including confining our dialogue false calls of islam mow phone islamophobia call that radical islam as well. Is that not legitimizing it by calling it that . So this was the president and also military leaders interviewed on this network saying we dont want to give them the legitimacy to say theyre representing islam. Its not for us to give them legitimacy. Theyve already taken it by seeking shelter in my faith. We are not at a point of declaring war but war has been declared because islamism is totalitarian it is seeking to replace our kind of world. The president also referred in his remarks that United States is not under any existential threat and i would agree with him. Were a very robust country, robust democracy, as is brittain canada australia, france but how we talk about these things is clearly being affected by new sentiments of islamophobia. Weve seen that in style guides for al jazeera. Theyre a global network. They put out a style guide saying that their reporters and anchors can no longer use the words extremists terrorists islamist so its one thing for the administration to be politically correct, but what happens when the media stops using these words . So very thats very shocking and you just educated me on that this morning. Also bbc arabic has had the same conversation where theyre refusing to call the Charlie Hebdo jihadists as terrorists. So when the media gets involved in regulating the conversation i think that there is an attempt to avoid exposing the public to what is actually unfolding. The intentions i dont know. The Media Networks may be afraid exposing themselves to criticism, right, because theyre playing to the base of their audience. Or physical attack. Lets not forget Charlie Hebdo occurred in an he had do recall office. There may be all kinds of motives, but its up to the American Public highly educated and informed to reclaim the conversation. We love having you on. Thanks so much for being on new day. My pleasure. Thank you. All right. A fiveyear mystery with no clear answer. Who killed the mcstay family. Tomorrow will mark five years since the mcstay family was found dead four years ago. Cnns randyi kaye is following this. Charles chase merit. Tonight randis cnns special report chasing a killer inside the mcstay family murder looks at what led to the arrest. Reporter early on friend and business associate chase merit was on top of the list. Detectives are taking a close look at Joseph Mcstays business relationships. Reporter he spoke to us in his only television interview. I was the last person who saw them so of course i was a person of interest. Reporter did detectives ask you if you killed Joseph Mcstay and his family . I dont recall them asking me that. Reporter nothing that direct . Huh . Reporter nothing that directly . No. Reporter you took a polygraph test. What did it show . I dont know. Reporter you passed the polygraph . Apparently. I mean i havent i kind of simply assumed. Well apparently that that resolved any issues that they may be looking at with me. Randi kaye joins us live from los angeles. Good to see you. I followed it vividly. What finally led them to this man, to chase merit this friend this associate that had sort of been looked at from the beginning . Reporter absolutely. When we sat down with him, micaela, he told me he was Joseph Mcstays best friend. Its so interesting that here he is facing these murder charges. San Bernardino County took over this case. They had been watching chase merit for a year 24 7 before he was arrested. He was the first person at the house after the family disappeared. They werent sure what he was doing there. So that has raised some questions. He lives in another part of california which isnt too far from the mohave desert which is where the bodies were found. There were 100 pieces of evidence. There may have been some tire tracks that they may have been looking at. They wouldnt be fully forth come about what they found in the desert but it raised some eyebrows. There was blood spatter from Blunt Force Trauma at the house. If you put chase merit as the first person at the house, theyre definitely looking at that. Its interesting when you look at all of the evidence that was stacked up against him, he passed the polygraph though and when you sat down to talk to him he claimed that he had no idea what happened no clue what happened to this family. They clearly saw inconsistencies here in his story as well. Absolutely. I mean there was the last phone call which they really keyed in on at 8 47 p. M. The night of february 4th when the family disappeared all those years ago. Chase merits story about whether he answered the phone or didnt answer the phone. He told us that he didnt answer the phone but he had said in other instances he had answered. There was the case of lunch on the day that the mcstays disappeared. Chase merit had lunch with Joseph Mcstay at a chickfila in california. He told us joey was really happy and they were celebrating big business coming in. In other cases he spoke with patrick mcstay, the grandfather in this case and he had told patrick that joey and he had had a fight and that joey wasnt happy with some of the work he was doing. Were not sure which case is fact. Well now theres an even i guess more bizarre twist. I understand that a judge has granted him permission to represent himself . I was shocked by this. Reporter and so was the judge actually. The judge tried to talk him out of it. He told him several times that this is unadvisable. He kept saying i want to do it. I want to to it. The reason he wants to do it is he says hes not a healthy man. His lawyer has said that he has congestive heart failure. He seems to think he has six or eight months or so to live so he wants to move this trial along. Now hes going to represent himself. He could end up very well cross examining and questioning people who he says we should be looking closer at. Certainly taking the blame off him. Its going to be a very interesting trial if it even gets to that. It is a very confounding story. We appreciate randi, your reporting on it. Cnn special report chasing a family killer.
