Outside this is fine, i dont care about the emergency thing, you see the car coming by us technically, if he gets stopped, its a huge ticket. It is. 100 or more. What should we know . New york got missed. But its the exact forecast we talked about yesterday, on the gfs, we saw yesterday, 10 to 12. But its the first time we took the model out for a test drive. We took the brand new model out. The brand new car out and we liked it. Who is not getting missed connecticut, rhode island long island massachusetts. The word historic still works out there. The word historic here is a bust. Is it true i was looking at during early start, i was watching the storm track. When it stalls over an area to my mind that means its stalled, thats done. Thats actually worse, right . Youre old enough to remember hurricane agnes, it stalled over the poconos and flooded the entire susquehana valley. In eastern long island, montauk, its just unbelievable. It looks like youre on the surface of a different planet. Chad and i were thinking he had to do yesterday and last night. Should we go out to long island thats where we live and we were afraid we wouldnt get a signal out. We were right. Montauk is the end of long island. We have christina aleshi there, can you hear us . Yes, i can. It is in fact as you said the most eastern tip of the south fork of long island and it is get hit pretty hard. Still being pounded by the snow. The three Major Concerns here of course are the wind and how it may effect power lines, coastal flooding, beach erosion and of course snow removal, because visibility is just so tough right knew and im standing right by the beach and yesterday visibility was really tough. And this morning i cant even see the beach. On the wind front, anything above 30 Miles Per Hour will affect power lines, and we know its above 30 Miles Per Hour pause we couldnt get the satellite up. Thats one thing, the other is beach erosion, this community as you know chris, was traumatized by super storm sandy. And they were just starting to rebuild their town beach and reinforce it because it was destroyed because of super storm sandy. And of course snow removal on the roads, visibility can make it tough for the plows to get out there. And once you have a significant amount of accumulation like we have now, it gets harder and harder to clear that snow out. You got to bring bigger equipment in so those are the challenges for the residents and the Business Owners out here this morning. Chris. Well christina, no question you can call it hurricane, super storm, whatever you want to call it they were smashed out there. They are concerned about it thats a big fishing outpost and people are worried about their commercial boats, whats the word on the ground about how people are handling it with another 12 14 16 hours yet to go . Well everybody is really hunkered down at this point. We drove through town and there wasnt much activity yesterday, this particular hotel that were staying at had a whole restaurant basically taken over by the ocean during super storm sandy. So people are concerned, but theyre more concerned about the tide. And yesterday we saw tides come up about two to three feet above average. That is not a concern just yet. So the major concern right now seems to be power. And of course this community got hit with Superstorm Sandy and Power Outages. We dont have reports of those yet. Thats the major concern right now, chris. You know youre talking about the tide christina. Its a very important point. Every six hours you have a tide cycle from high to low. While its high while salt water doesnt freeze the way standing water does. It can freeze once it gets thin and up on the roads and you also have the snow to remove makes it very heavy. A salted road will freeze at a certain point. Salt can only do so much for so long and then all of a sudden it will still freeze. When that water gets up on the roads it could still be a sheet of ice. So the problem is youre living out in montauk in new york city, youre like, im only 95, 100 miles away. What does it mean that it stalled there . Why would it stall there and how is that going to change their timeframe . Its doing a slight loop in the atlantic ocean, the low came off the coast, and we thought, hoped it would keep on going like a clipper, its doing a slight little rotating back and then come back in. Thats the classic noreaster. When people think about the 50s and 60s, when the storm was just pounting. When the storm came out to the ocean and came back to them a little bit, then finally left thats the pinwheel effect. So the rotation will cycle through, but the question is when . At least another 18 hours. 18 hours. And its snowing in boston. Its snowing two inches an hour in boston. Yesterday chad found a beautiful way to describe this by calling it the ho ho effect. Out there in boston its no joke. How bad is it we put new the extreme, whats it like there . Its pretty bad, the wind is awful and you know its hard to tell how much snow is actually falling versus the snow thats being whipped up by the wind. So that and as you mentioned, chris, its really heavy snow. This is not light powder. This is really dense, wet snow thats the kind of snow that if it accumulates on power lines is going to take them down. So were hearing that high tide out there will be 3 15 p. M. So thats going to be very important time for you to be watching because youll have another three to four feet of tide. More water available it get whipped. People are talking about drifts getting blown up against the houses on the coast and because of the salt air, its getting a layer of ice on it christina, get in the truck and get warm it will get back to you with chad. Right now to michaela pereira, live in new London Connecticut where the blustery winds, mixed with heavy snow made conditions incredibly dangerous, even from someone from the frozen reaches of canada. Thats the big story right now. Weve been standing outside. You probably heard chris tell you that we tried in vain to get our car out of this parking lot which has not been plowed yet and theres no signs of any plows coming by in the next while any time soon. Its actually not that terribly cold out if youre dressed for it but its this wind. I dont know if my producer miguel who is high camera operator can show you. The wind is whipping around and its really fine snow. Its hard to determine how much snow is falling, because it feels as though the wind that is is coming through is picking up the snow thats fallen. Weve got an incredible amount of accumulation if miguel can show you over here. These are cars that have been parked overnight, people heeded the warning of the governor here to stay off the roads, right, were at our hotel this place is packed by the way. The cars that have been park overnight, you cant tell how much snow actually fell because theres a whole lot of wind whipping up and push the snow into drifts along the vehicles. It took a half hour of Good Old College Try to get our vehicle out of the parking lot. As chris said im a canadian i grew up driving in the snow we couldnt budge, we have snow tires, we couldnt get anywhere. People are heeding the warnings and not trying to get out. We havent seen any vehicles on the road except for one snowplow at a nearby business and that guy was taking his time. The big concern obviously here is when the snowplows are going to get out. We have no idea chris, at this point. But were going to keep watching the situation. As soon as the plow comes out here were going to try to get out on the troods get a sense of the conditions here. The wind is kicking up something fierce. What do you think the difference is between what youre seeing on a drift effect how high youre seeing it on the side of the cars. Im going to walk back a couple of steps. It will give you an idea look at the mick go. So you know its well im a tall girl im about 57, with hair up im 58 its up to nye knees quite easily. I should tell you, here in new london waterford, were about 55 miles from the city on a normal day that should take you what, with a little bit of traffic, maybe two hours or so. It took us four and a half hours, there wasnt a lot of accumulation on the street there wasnt a lot of crazy wind. But people were taking it easy which was great. Theres a lot of people trying to get where they need to go before the 9 00 traffic travel ban. I watched the snow change. At one point it looked like little tiny crystal stars. It then changed to crumbs and then it changed to big flakes like what im used to seeing out on the west coast. Right now, its like icing sugar, its like powder and thats whats whipping around me. I love all the different adjectives to describe the snow. I like snow im a canadian. Im a new yorker brown snow yellow know or white snow. But chad was saying thats temperature dependant. As it gets cold youll see a difference in the temperature. In nebraska it could snow with a clear sky, the ice crystals get so cold it can snow. Jennifer gray is standing in pounding wind lets get to her. Youre up there, its bearing down and its stalling where you are in massachusetts. Boston specifically. What are the conditions . Yeah the conditions here in boston, here by the harbor and we havent had a lot of erosion because we are protected here with the harbor. But farther north, say around rockberry port or plymouth. Weve had considerable beach erosion where the water will come in during the high tide. Well see what will happen on the next 12hour cycle. The snow is coming down about an inch or two an hour. The heaviest its been since weve been out here. The snow hard to measure out here because of the wind. The snow will just blow around. Weve had official reports of about seven inches of snow so far here in boston. And you can see me kicking it rnd a, very very fluffy. We had about two inches on the ground. But we are continuing to get it and we could be in this for another 12 to 18 hours. So we could easily pick up another foot foot and a half of snow here in boston. Of course we only have winds right now at about 10 Miles Per Hour. Of course that fluctuates depending on when the bands come in weve had winds a lot higher right around nantucket, a ham Radio Operator reported a gust about 78 Miles Per Hour. We havent anything like that in boston. But were going to be here for quite a while it looks like its going to be continuing to come down once the snow bands come through, it really starts to pile up. Jen, well get back to you, alisyn well get back to you, weve been checking in with a lot of government officials. Its easy to bring a little stink to the government saying you overhyped this. Theres a couple of points to be made. You have 12 15 18 hours left of this. Where jen is and mick is and out on island where christina aleschi is. Its not over bay long shot. And government officials are saying nobody wants to shut things down less than they do. Because its very expensive and it winds up stopping commerce and they get criticism. Theyre heeding the same calls they have all along. Stay inside if you can. This is a day to let the work day skip better safe than sorry. Were going to put all of those questions to mayor bill de blasio when he comes in to talk to new day in an hour and a half. We understand it is hard to outsmart Mother Nature and figure out the timing of these things perfectly. Massachusetts is getting hit especially hard. We want to bring in rene fielding, the director of the office of the states Emergency Managements. Good morning rene. How are you . Good morning. How are you . Im good how are you . Im at the citys Operations Center right now and we had a pretty good night. Lots of crews out and were just getting ready right now is when were starting to see the snow pick up coming down you know two to three inches an hour and were seeing the winds pick up. We were reading about this family a familys house that went up in flames in the worcester area luckily the family was able to get out safely. Can you tell us how busy your First Responders have been overnight. In the city of boston we had a couple of fires, nothing, nothing major, though and ems probably had about 30 transports but thats pretty normal for a night for them. So weve been lucky and we havent had any Power Outages in the city that have lasted longer than an hour. Ha is lucky. Lets talk about what youre looking at. Chad myers told us you have another 18 hours of snowfall up there. How much accumulation have you had so far and what are you expecting for the day . So our public works crews have been reporting that we have just under a foot of snow in some of the sections of the city and were expecting to get another foot to foot and a half of snow during the next 18 hours. Oh my gosh. So when you have two feet or two and a half feet of snow on the ground in boston and the cape and the surrounding areas, then what . What will happen in the city . Yeah so we the public works crew focused on getting those main arteryiesyies widened. Weve got a snow emergency parking rules in effect. They cant park on the roads, the remove the snow on the secondaries and then they do snow removal and truck the snow out to snow farms and dumping the snow there. Boston is no stranger to snow, but not to this degree how long do you think it will take get the city operating again after a snowfall like this . It takes about a couple of days the mayor canceled school for tuesday and wednesday. So to give everyone enough time to make sure we can get the streets cleared around the schools and insure we can get the piles knocked down on the corners where the kids wait for the buses. So were planning on working straight through today and all through wednesday and getting the city back up and operational for thursday. If you have two and a half feet of snow if thats what it ends up being at the end of the next 24 hours, is that recordbreaking snowfall in Boston Boston . The record i believe is 27. 5. And that with a a president s day storm in 2003. So if we get over 27 it will be a record. Look rene we have the records for you here on screen right now. The one you were talking about in 2003. 27. 5 inches. In 1978 27. 1. In 1969 26. 3 inches. In 1997 i was living in boston during that storm in 1997 i remember it on april 1, 25. 4 inches. And then in 2013 24. 9 inches. Rene is there a travel ban right now in the city of boston . There is. And its really important that people adhere to that. So its going to get really bad, theyre going to get up and want to start getting around the city. But its going to be blizzardlike conditions with zero visibility so its important that people adhere to that so the public works can get out there and stay focused on the streets. Everybody, stay in your pajamas, get a cup of hot cocoa and ride this out. Rene fielding thank you so much. Lets get back outside to chris, now with, how its going on the streets of new york. Chris . Dont be shy about bringing any of that keco down here to me and chad by the way. Cocoa. Ive already just about had it. I grew up here you think i would be used to it i cant handle the cold. In the some big cities the blizzard warning has passed but a lot of people commute into this city from as far away as connecticut. Montauk, as well as parts of jersey. Connecticut, theyre going to be dealing with a lot of trouble there for all day and into the night. The governor there, governor malloy said we have a travel ban on the highways stay clear, lets let the department of transportation do its job. Weve been hearing that lieutenant this is still on for you, especially the risk along the coast. 12 16, 18 hours, you know people are questioning whether or not they were overprepared for this and whether or not they should go about their normal lives. What is your word to the wise . Were experiencing treacherous conditions up here in connecticut. The governor did put that travel ban to place, it has been extremely helpful. The conditions are dangerous out there. To put it bluntly. The wind is blowing, note is coming down sideways the roads, were trying to keep them d. O. T. And dpw is out there doing a great job. But as they clear it the snow fills back in and they keep going back and forth. We will get through this but we need cooperation. And obviously, one of the big risks is people may think they can get out and take it on with their vehicles. But if something happens, what is your ability to get to them . Well we distribute manpower all throughout the state with our special vehicles so we can get to an emergency. But the travel conditions for First Responders are slow and difficult and people have to understand that. And that enhances the danger even that much more. The best thing to do is certainly ride the storm out. Pay attention to all the media information. Thats being provided and certainly abide by the requests made by the state, city officials. One of the concerns obviously, in your line of work is that the normal becomes the extraordinary. Because of the conditions. What have you had in terms of situations youve had to deal with people getting stuck in bad situations have you been able to get to people . The ordinary course of business in terms of getting people to hospitals and allowing for life to go on when there is an emergency, are you able to do the job so far . Yes, we are and certainly hats are off to the plow drivers and d. O. T. And dpw workers. Because certainly they are called into service also when we have emergencies, we need to get to people. But certainly we did have time to preplan and to get things ready and certainly everything was in place. You know the governor has the National Guard on stand by we have all the Connecticut State Police department in its entirety on call ready to go. But so far, people are being very cooperate i have been. This too shall pass but it will take some time as the forecast indicates the snow is going to continue to fall here in the state of connecticut. Any need for rescue yet . Anybody youve had to pull out of their homes and get to the hospital . Or anybody who has been put in a bad situation because of power . Obviously wind and snow very tough on transformers an power lines, how you doing so far . So far, so good certainly the Power Companies out there in the state have been deployed and theyve been deployed in strategic locations around connecticut. There was a lot of preplanning with the government Operations Center under governor malloy weve been prepared for this in every facet of the imagination. Power lines, law enforcement, ems, everybody is pulling together because we know this is dangerous situation. And we are doing our best to manage it. Long island were hearing along the coast, theyve had some power issues sporadic mostly. Do you know any numbers in terms of who has lost power yet . Ive not gotten numbers from the Power Companies at this point in time. The city has been shut down its a white wonderland for people here. The Stock Exchange is closed. Stores arent open. Schools are closed. But this is the good part of the story. This blizzard has a very different face its very severe the storm according to chad myers, has stalled over parts of massachusetts and connecticut and is swirling. Thats dumping large amounts of snow and creating swirling winds there, creating the drifts that we heard about. One of the places that its still being very hard hit, rhode island the governor there declared a state of emergency warning people to prepare, be patient, stay put that state is no stranger to severe snowstorms people there diltealt with similar conditions just a year ago, sarah, whats the situation now . The brutal the wind right now, iming about to go grab my ski goggles, were getting pelted in the face with drifts of snow. Its been windy here all morning. But in the last 20 minutes its really really picked up. The wind tropical stormforce winds, we expect them this is these are the hours that we expect them to peak. Now a little bit of good news here in providence im in the main square. This is the, the transportation hub, essentially of providence. And its not busy at all this morning. The only vehicles you see on the road are the salt trucks the plow trucks theyve been coming by keeping the streets relatively clean. But we have seen people are heeding those travel warnings and hopefully, thats thats led to some other good news which is weve checked with officials, Emergency Management officials here no one has had to go to a shelter. In the city of providence or surrounding areas. And theres no significant Power Outages here. Here in rhode island there are other concerns. This is a coastal state, chris, and all, every single one of the coastal communities in this state is under a flood watch right now because of high tide actually coincides with the worst of the storm. And that is happening, i have to say, personally from experience can tell you, right now. These are the peak hours. Not just for the snowfall but also for the wind. And the wind is the thing that ive noticed the most when youre standing out here. Its what sets this storm apart from from others. It you know rhode island deals all the time with snow and cold. And speaking of cold it feels like about negative 2. Thats the real feel temperature out here right now. This wind is is tropical stormforce winds, you can certainly feel it when youre standing out here. Thats what theyve been describing to us sara. This is a hurricane with snow instead of wind. Youre talking about the tide its not a detail its a significant factor there. Because as the level rises along the coastal areas, it just turbocharges everything. Especially with the wind. Right now we have some of the police behind us talking to people about the, telling people not to be driving around because the city is closed. Theyre giving them their warnings about that. So were going to stay with you, though, sara. Right now because its also how people deal with the situation, the police are telling people not to be driving. Here the warning has passed where you are, it has not. Youre getting into a critical period. Are you seeing people the people you spoke to are they ready for this . I have not seen a ton of people. Weve seen maybe two or three cars. One gawker came by just to take a look right before you and i started to talk here, chris. But what ive seen is Police Vehicles salt trucks and plow trucks thats good news this is kennedy plaza, this is the main thoroughfare main transportation hub, this is downtown providence. Normally on a Tuesday Morning at this point there would be plenty of cars lots of people making their way into work for the day. And thats absolutely not the case. Everything is shut down theres been a travel ban in place since midnight and it does appear that people are adhering to that they are listening. Hopefully thats the reason we havent heard of any significant emergencies, there arent people in shelters like i mentioned, and you know speaking of Power Outages and how we dont hear of any significant Power Outages at this point according to Emergency Management officials, the winds in providence are picking up. They could be worse, right now theyre coming in from the north. And thats protecting the city. Because theyre coming in over land. If they were coming in from the south, over sea, it could be worse. And it pains me to say that im not sure how it could feel much worse, but it could be chris . How it feels is one thing, the effect it has is the focus of our concern. Chad myers is going to come in later and describe how things will change as the sun comes up. The dynamics of the storm being stalled. High tide the wind theyre all coming together at what could be the wrong time. Alisyn stay warm. Zblon the phone is pater gaynor with the rhode island Emergency Management agency. How was your night . It was actually kind of quiet and we appreciate that. The governor put out some consistent messaging to have all Rhode Islanders stay off the road and they pretty much heeded her advice were thankful about that. Is there a travel ban in place in rhode island . There is travel ban until further notice bridges are closed and again were still in the middle of it and well probably be in blizzard conditions until 10 00 or 11 00 this morning, so were not out of it just yet. Thats what youre predicting the storm comes in waves, when youre in one of the quiet waves, you go oh i guess weve passed the worst. I know in providence and all throughout rhode island the worst is yet to come. What are you expecting for the next ten hours . Well i think pretty much what weve seen since about 1 00 this morning. Winds, in providence gusts this morning up to 45 weve had higher gusts along the coast in rhode island to 60. So wind blowing snow. It will make traveling almost impossible. And so we ask residents to stay off the road until they hear from the governor and we can get back to normal. Peter, how about Power Outages . Were doing pretty good on Power Outages, about 1,000 across the state. And no particular area. And we have three main pockets and crews are out there assessing that right now. So again i think were in good shape when it comes to power for right now. And how about the Emergency Responders last night . Did they have any important calls . It was actually very quiet last night. We checked with the Rhode Island State Police today, minimal calls on the road minimal stranded motorists. So again we do appreciate the rhode island residents heeding the warnings from the governor. Peter, what i hear you saying is is that this time it worked. People took the storm seriously, all the officials that came out from new york up through bost hon said this is going to be a big one. Everybody, do not go to work if you dont have to dont travel if you dont have to stay off the roads, they put in travel bans and you hear people complain sometimes on mornings like this like what was the big deal i could have made it to work. I didnt have to stay shut in. The truth is that it seems as though heeding the warnings has really worked. It helps us to keep up with snowplowing, we check with our d. O. T. Operators this morning. Theyre keeping up with it which is a good sign. Once you get behind a little bit. Then things start to unravel. Right now we feel in pretty good shape. The message is stay off the road you know take care of each other and be prepared for the next six or ten hours. Peter gaynor thanks so much for the status report. Thanks so much. People are starting to move around theyre trying to plow the area. This is as good as it gets. Less than 100 miles away. The tip of long island montauk, theyre getting hit with a very different aspect of this actual blizzard conditions. Christina alesci youre there, how is it now . Because right now, unfortunately, this is as good as it will get for you, youre in an ebb tide situation, low tide. The wind hasnt really reached its maximum and you have another 12 14 hours of snow dump. What are the conditions right now for you . Youre just rubbing it in chris, its pretty bad. Montauk still being pounded by the snow as you mentioned, the tide is a concern as we see it rise like later on in the afternoon. But right now, local officials are more concerned about Power Outages, given the wind. Anything above 30 Miles Per Hour will of course affect power lines. We know that its above that. Because we couldnt get our satellite truck up this morning. And well have to see how that plays out. The governor did announce 200 additional tree contractors and 400 additional line workers yesterday in anticipation of the power lines going down. Nothing yet, but the snow is heavy and that kind of compounds things from a power perspective as it weighs on those power lines. Also beach erosion in this community of fishermen, surfers, very reliant on tourism for their beaches. And this community was quite traumatized by Superstorm Sandy. In fact as i mentioned before theyre rebuilding their town beach that was basically destroyed here by super storm sandy. The efforts were just about to get under way. Now they have this to deal with. Every time they have a major weather event the beaches here do get hit pretty bad. Chris . Christina, i dont want to keep you out there too long. Try to stay warm. Weve got a long day ahead of us. And the conditions are only going to get worse where you are. That combination of you know the wet wind that theyre dealing with there and heavy snow accumulations, its going to be tough on power lines and we hope for the best at this point. And no where to go cities and towns prosecute pennsylvania to maine shut down by the snow and the wind. The wind is gusting near hurricane levels. Blizzard warnings now lifted in new york city and new jersey but states of emergency are declared in connecticut, massachusetts, new Jersey New York and rhode island. And the travel bans are still in place around the region. Most notably in new york city where subways and buses have stopped operating overnight. This is the first time in more than 100 years that Public Transportation has been shut down for snow. So travel in the air and on the rails, also brought to a standstill almost 4400 Flights Canceled today. With of course a Ripple Effect across the country. Amtrak also suspended in much of the northeast. Despite all of that it is a snow day for lots and lots of kids in new york city boston philadelphia all have closed schools, giving millions of students a reprieve. Lets go back outside to chris, who is with chad myers, chris, i have good news for you, i have begun making the hot cocoa and i am putting on my boots and my parka and im going to deliver it to you before the show is over. Begun . Im freezing out here alisyn i keep looking up at the cnn sign i keep saying to chad its getting colder. No it isnt. The point hes make something duration. So alisyn any time you want to come down youd be welcome, i could use a hug if nothing else. Now important distinction, new york city here yes, cold the snow is getting hard. Theres a warning for kids to be careful if youre in new york city not to be in the park because of the weight on limbs and different power lines. But we have whats happening right now and what has already happened. Take us through it. We had ten inches of snow in new york city you walk through the park you have about ten inches youre up to your knee at this point in time. Thats over well get flurry not much more wind. Weve got missed here in the tristate. But everybody else more people got hit, and are getting hit than got missed. Were talking boston connecticut, long island rhode island. Islip, 18 inches of snow already on the ground and its still snowing and it will continue to snow for quite some time. The radar is going to show you that first band of snow thats already from portland maine, down to boston and across the cape and down into long island. Thats the heaviest snow the two to three inches of snow per hour and the winds are blowing at 50 Miles Per Hour. So the question is i got a couple of emails this morning, why didnt it happen here . Yesterday we talked about the models. The new model, the Weather Service put millions of dollars into this new model. We looked at it yesterday and we said wow, this is only going to put ten inches in new york city. All the other models say 24 we wonder which one is correct. The new model, the one the Weather Service put a bunch of money in is working well. Believe the new model and throw away the old one, it didnt work as well. I dont believe in cya mode when it comes to weather for two reasons. One, the point of fact you were saying you didnt believe the high estimates in new york city yesterday which i was very happy about. Which is the second point. If youre going to be wrong, you want to be wrong and it winds up being better than you thought. Its when we get caught on the other side that we wind up having the complete disaster situations people arent prepared municipalities arent prepared you cant get the people the help they need. Thats a huge problem and the one concern i have Going Forward is that people think its over and in a lot of areas, it isnt. Especially on the coast where they have to go through tide cycles, right . Exactly right. It comes to a point where people will complain about the weather no matter what. If you get it right or get it wrong. My question back to them is what is the right number of fatalities . Whats the correct number . If we would have said six and ten people died, is that the right number . No the right number of fatalities is always going to be zero. Always better safe than sorry. No question and as chad has been saying this is an evolving situation because the storm has stalled over areas. You got massachusetts, rhode island connecticut. Lets get to mick shes up in new London Connecticut. Michaela was trying to get around they got hit by drifted snow couldnt move their vehicle, conditions are changing theres a lot of wind there. I see you, you look great, but whats it like around you . Its been really interesting, were getting gusts, were getting reports from the national Weather Service, to borrow from chads world, around 3 00 a. M. They were talking gusts up to 45 Miles Per Hour. When its not, the sustained winds they say are probably down around the 20mileperhour range. But when its not windy here chris, its really quiet and peaceful. There is a whole lot of dry snow. It doesnt feel particularly wet. Although it does look like it on my face. But the wind blow it is through. I want to show awe little something. I think its over here you can see, we were told that around 3 00 a. M. The national Weather Service described had said there was eight inches of you . Snow. Look at the drifts. Its hard to believe that thats only eight inches. It has been snowing constantly. We tried to get our vehicle out of here about an hour ago, you cant even see the tracks where we attempted to. And we made quite a mess out there. Let me give you some stats what were looking for here in connecticut. People are heeding the travel ban, heeding the idea to shelter in place, because the blirdzzard warning is in effect throughout the day. Today most of connecticut going to be under this blizzard watch. Southwest coast, areas like danbury and bridgeport are not going to be under the blizzard warning today. Not like new york city where the blizzard warning has been lifted. Were keeping our eyes on the horizon, waitsing for the cavalry to come in a bevy of snowplows, were hoping that they get out so we can get to our live location to show you what were seeing here. For towns like new london budget cuts are hampering their snow removal efforts on a good day. When youve got a travel ban and a blizzard the idea of seeing a snowplow here is slim to none. Theres a lot of anxious people inside our hotel that have better places to go. But theyre heeding the warnings staying inside. Its interesting to watch the snowfall. It is coming down. Let me tell you. Every once in a while we get a face full of snow from the wind that is kicking up the snow thats in the drifts im going to show you again how much more its accumulated since i last talked to you. Im going to head out here so you can see. Its gotten that much deeper mid thigh and its just the wind blowing it around its really dry snow. Its really fluffy stuff. This is not heavy stuff. But when you get the amounts that are here people are obviously concerned about Power Outages if the snow gets really heavy and knocks down branches the bill the manager of the hotel were staying at said the last storm they had a big one through here in 2013. Since then theyve done a lot in this area to get rid of the tree branches that can be a real concern when they get heavy with snow. Thats potentially a time when the power could get knocked down. Not hearing that yet, but well keep our ear to the ground. Well come back to another mick stick check. Every time they get the snowplow 15 minutes later, the wind has blown it shut again. So the plows have to go over the same areas over and over again. They have to marshal their assets. Alisyn back to you. Well return to our breaking blizzard coverage in a moment. Fareed great to see you. Pleasure to be here. Where it is 60 degrees and very cool. Thank you for weather report. Tell us the top headlines of the president s trip. It was a hugely successful trip. For the last three days india was wall to wall obama. He was like a rock star the choreography the choreography of the trip which was largely done by the indians, by Prime Minister modi was brilliantly done. There was so many photo opes so many moments which have resonated here and the president told me, what he regarded as most important this was going to a country like india and building on the opportunities here. A country that is increasingly very pro american. Both in terms of the public which is which is very interested and fascinated by america. And the government which views a rising china as necessitating closer relationship with america. That this provided an opportunity to build on success and not simply have to deal with taking you know taking care of the fires and in the middle east this was an opportunity to build a positive agenda for American Foreign policy. You got this sitdown with president obama and you broached the subject of what he would say when he got to saudi arabia. And about the complicated relationship between the u. S. And saudi arabia. So lets listen to a clip of this. Will you speak about the blogger to the saudis . I think on this visit obviously a lot of this is just paying respects to King Abdullah who in his own fashion represented some modest efforts at reform within the kingdom. But we have maintained a sustained dialogue with the saudis and with all the other countries that we work with. What i found effective is to a apply steady consistent pressure even as were accomplishing business that needs to get that makes our allies uncomfortable. It makes them frustrated. Sometimes we have to balance our need to speak to them about human rights issues in immediate concerns that we have in terms of countering terrorism or dealing with regional instability. But the trend line is one that i will sustain throughout the rest of my presidency and that is to make an argument to those friends and allies of ours that if they want a society that is going to be able to sustain itself in this age, then theyre going to have to change how they do business. Fareed very interesting to hear him talk about how complicated it is to bring up issues of human rights with some of these countries, do you think that he will talk to them about this blogger who has been sentenced to 1,000 lashes . I got the sense he will not do this on this trip. And perhaps he doesnt intend to do it at the president ial level, that is the president to the king. Secretary kerry has and i think might do it again. He was very toughminded in a sense. I asked him a couple of questions about saudi arabia and the arab world. And his general point was look we have National Interests and we have security interests that have to be taken care of. And we have to do business with whoever is in power. And i dont make any apologies for that. But we are also pressing them on issues of reform. Im paraphrasing of course. But that was the general feeling you got was that he was pretty toughminded and pretty unapologetic about the fact that you have to deal with not entirely liberal and democratic regimes in order to secure americas interests when dealing with issues like terrorism. Good morning, welcome back to new day, im chris cuomo out on the streets of new york city. The city has been effectively shut down. You only see it in situations like this. People are just starting to move around. There are a lot of Police Vehicles out leer theyve been pulling people over who arent heeding the emergency rule of not being on the roads, but the worst soefr for new york city. The blizzard warning has been passed for this situation that were monitoring alisyn. Im Alisyn Camerota in the studio in new york. Michaela pereira is live for us in connecticut. Tens of millions of people in the northeast are still under Winter Weather advisories with the worst still to come in many areas. So we have the crippling storm covered across the region like only cnn can. But for now we want to go back outside to chris to see how it is and what to expect next. Chris . Well the pictures tell the story. They always do. We see this blizzard has given you something from the sublime to the ongoing and severe. A big factor of this as chad myers has been explaining from the beginning, is this essentially a blizzard is a hurricane with snow. And the wind is making it so difficult to get around. And to deal with the snow for officials who are trying very much to keep pace with the snowfall. One inches two inches three inches in some places. Thats why the warning is still in effect. If you can, stay home stay inside. The schools are closed the stock market is closed businesses are closed roads are closed. So think about it if you take a risk it will be tough for people to get to you. If you want to fly, a silly notion at this point. About 7,000 flights have been canceled. 4400 just today, that will ripple across the country and well be seeing delays for days as a result. The rails are a problem. Amtrak is suspended in much of the northeast. Theyre dealing with wind and accumulation. In the big cities you could have subway issues the subway in new york city hasnt been closed for 100 years, its closed today. Mayor bill de blasio is coming on to cnn this morning, hell comment about that at montauk, the east end of long island is where Christina Alesci is, how is it going now . I it keeps getting worse and worse, theres no one out here in montauk. Whats going on now is local authorities are concerned about the wind and visibility. Visibility is so tough, im standing right by the beach and i cannot see the ocean. Just yesterday, you know not even yesterday, last night i could see the ocean. And this morning, i cant. So its getting worse and worse and thats going to make it tricky do get snow off the roads. And if you cant go out, if the authorities cant go out and take snow off the roads, theyre going to have to bring out heavier and heavier equipment. Suffolk county montauk is part of Suffolk County. It has 250 pieces of snow removal equipment ready to go. But if they cant see, they cant get that equipment on the roads. And that means heavier and heavier equipment is going to have to be brought out to take care of that were concerned, local authorities are concerned about power. The wind is whipping up. Its getting stronger and stronger. And anything above 30 Miles Per Hour will become problematic for power lines. Now were up to about 50. Gusts could go up to 70 according to the national Weather Service, so wind is going to continue to be an issue and you have beach erosion, which is a major issue from this community thats been traumatized by Superstorm Sandy. A lot of the beaches are destroyed. And when it comes to the tides here its going to its not just about how far it comes up. It matters where the waves are breaking. If theyre breaking out further in the ocean. That means the beaches arent going to be pounded. But if the waves are going to be breaking near the beach itself thats when it becomes problematic for the beaches. This town montauk, is in the middle of rebuilding its town beach. Theyre trucking 100,000 cubic yards of sand to rebuild that beach. And theyre just getting over that. So now for a major weather event like this to come and make it problematic for the beaches, you know its just more work ahead for this community. And were going to have to see how the rest of the day plays out. Thats going to dictate how much damage is done at the end of the day. Youre exactly right, christina and your camera man is doing the right thing. He should be moving around the shot to show what a whiteout condition you have there. Lets bring in chad quickly here. Shes at the good part of it the tide is starting to come up the storm has stalled over the top of her. Shes got duration and tide thats going to work against the people in montauk. Shes going to get to the next high tide before the storm starts to taper off. So thats thats going to be a problem. In all of those coastal communities, we thought the first high tide would be the problem. But because the storm has slowed down so much the next high tide will truly be it. We got a miss here ten inches of snow in the city and thats a miss great news. Millions of people in the tristate are in good shape. The people there have 18 more hours to deal with in montauk. And they have 18 inches in some parts of long island. Theyre going 0 get a lot more. We had ten year. Nothing to bat an eye at. They still havent been able to remove the snow. Theyve been working at it all morning. Lets go to deb feyerick out on long island. Thats a long coastal community. A lot of them dont have a lot of depth of beach because of what happened in sandy, so theyre going to be vulnerable there. Whats the situation where are you, whats it like . Chris, were right now driving on the long island expressway it was interesting, we came from manhattan through queens the roads there were plowed. In fact it was surprisingly, no snow the salt had melted much of it. As were moving towards long island. A lot snow and a thin and dangerous layer of ice under the snow. Theres a travel ban in effect out here. Weve seen upwards of two dozen snowplows and salt spreaders which is really good news that meeps the main highways are going to be easily drivable. Sooner rather than later. The problem is getting from your home out to the highway. We did veer off on to some of the side roads in queens they havent even begun to be plowed. All the cars they look like those hostess snowball cupcakes covered in inches of snow. Everyone is going to have to dig out of that. The numbers are impressive as far as new york city goes. Theyve got Something Like 2300 plows, salt spreaders and other vehicles out on the road there are 6,000 miles of road. In new york city alone. Thats the difference between los angeles to new york and back again. All of that is going to have to be plowed. Thats only chris, in new york city. So a lot of work yet to be done. We want to get to the governor of massachusetts, hes giving a press conference right now about the evolving situation. Lets listen in. Basically were currently looking at somewhere between six and 12 inches having fallen across and around most parts of massachusetts. Pretty clear at this point that the heaviest snow is falling in certain parts of worcester and Middlesex County and down in the southern parts of bristol county. We did see some of the coastal flooding that we expected to see. And i think a lot of local folks expected to see as well on the south shore and down on to the cape. Nantucket by the way has been hit particularly hard with respect to Power Outages. The power outage numbers at this point are significantly blow where we anticipated they would be. Thats a really good thing. Thats due in large part to the fact that the temperature was a bit colder than i think most people anticipated it would be. And as a result the snow is a lot lighter and fluffier. We did see very high winds. We continue to see high winds, well see high winds over the course of the day. And in many parts of massachusetts were going to see snow. Falling throughout the day and into the evening. Were going to continue to update ourselves, region by region over the course of the day and well obviously be reported to all of you. The one thing, two safety comments one is the folks at d. O. T. Have reported state police as well that there are people getting out of their vehicles on interstates, to clean off their windshields. Not a good idea. I think we prefer people if you need to clean off your windshield to get off the road before you do that. The other is passing plows. Thats a relatively dangerous activity. And i think we would ask people to simply be patient and not pursue that avenue. As theyre out there driving if they need to be. One final comment and id be happy to take questions, were going to continue to talk with local officials and others about the state of play across the different parts of massachusetts. Primary conversation will certainly be about local conditions. Cleanup activities. Where are they with respect do what they need to do to get their surface roads up and operating so we can continue to make decisions about, about travel. And were also talking over the course of the morning to our colleagues in the states of connecticut and rhode island and new york about that as well. The governor of massachusetts is starting to take questions from the media and he gave a good idea of what the story of this blizzard is so far. Its about a range. Theres no reason to not balance the coverage. Here in new york youre dealing with the sublime. Its a beautiful look here. It will be a play day for a lot of people. Were hearing that the stock market is going to open this morning because the blizzard warning has passed and thats the good part. But it is still and will be severe in a lot of places a lot of people literally millions of people are going to be dealing in a situation thats in harms way. Lets get to meteorologist Jennifer Gray up in boston. The situation so different than what were living with here in new york city. Jennifer the latest . Yeah, im telling you, it has been coming down. This is probably the heaviest we have seen the snow and its relentless its been coming down nonstop for the past hour. Hour and a half. At this rate. I would say two inches an hour at least. I have my weather station that i bring with me everywhere i go right behind me. Weve had peaks of about 20mileperhour winds here other places in the city have had those winds of about 35 Miles Per Hour. The national Weather Service looking into to to see if we have met blizzard criteria here in boston. Ive been measuring the snow. Its hard to measure because its blowing around so much. But this is about the best spot i can find. We have about a foot of snow right where im standing. But you can see the drifts out here. If you walk out there, it would most likely coming above my knees. Because snow drifts the winds blowing like it has been blows the snow all around. Weve had wind gusts of about 78 Miles Per Hour around nantucket. Just what they were saying a moment ago in the press conference. Offshore we have had wave heights up to 20 feet and so you can imagine with the wind blowing in from the northeast, waves at 20 feet high. That coastal erosion is going to be mass i have been. Were going to have the coastal flooding as well. So definitely not over. You say oh boston has about a foot of snow right you now. You have to keep in mind we have 12 18 more hours of this. We could easily pick up another foot foot and a half here in boston. Especially if it continues to come down at this rate. So chris, we still a long way to go. I know you guys are drying out in new york city, but up here in massachusetts massachusetts, its far from over. No question we have to stay on it there are going to be people in a situation where it will be difficult to control. Stay warm well be back with you. And just think about it alisyn for perspective we have about a foot of snow in new york city. And its a miss this is the good news imagine the other areas and what theyre still going to deal with especially with the storm thats stalled. We hear estimates of two to three feet two and a half feet in some places in massachusetts, so as weve been talking about, massachusetts is getting particularly hardhit. Lets bring in Sergeant Mark kavertebral, Police Sergeant for the barnstable Police Department on cape cod. It seems as though cape cod is taking the brunt of this massive storm. How many inches of snow do you have on the ground . We have drifting in the lot at our facility up to two to three feet in some areas. Its whiteout conditions. Do you have any sense of what the estimates are of how much snow you will get at the end of the next 18 hours . Youll have to check with your weather department. But its coming down hard. I want to urge our listeners to continue to stay off the roads. Let our emergency people work. Getting the roads cleared, so we can have everything ready and get to town back into shape as quickly as we can. Do you have an official travel ban in place . What the governor has puts out is what were following here and so far the residents on the cape of what were seeing are doing a very good job of keeping the roads clear of the snow. We understand that basically the storm has skirted up the east coast and is parked now, over areas of connecticut and cape cod. And that you have another 18 hours of this to deal with. Do you think that this will be a recordbreaking snowfall for you . The way its building up so far, it definitely has all the makes to be to be so. We have fortunately for us we have everything ready and in place, we prepared early. We have representatives from the local power company, in the Police Department and the regional Emergency Management which is in our town and we opened the shelter early to area residents. At last couth, a little over a dozen people utilizing it at this time. You guys were so prepared. High winds, youre still having blizzard condition winds up there. And that of course often leads to Power Outages, whats the stat snus. Fortunately weve not had any Power Outages reported directly through the Police Department as of yet. We heard the massachusetts governor, Charlie Baker talk about how theyre having a lot of Power Outages just across the water from you in nantucket. Theyre having a higher number than was predicted. It sounds like you guys the winds not as high as you had expected . Its blowing pretty hard here. And like i said there may be outages, but nothing thats been reported directly through the Police Department or what im hearing on this end here. Weve had a few trees down and coastal flooding near the barnstable harbor. Other than that a bunch of stuck vehicles but no major disturbances or injuries to report. Governor baker was warning about the coastal flooding how bad is it . We only had one road to shut down adjacent to the harbor. We had a high tide around 4 00 a. M. And it seems to be receding and we have no other roads shut down as of now. We understand the town of sandwich near you has had 18 inches on the ground. Which is remarkable. Given that youre going to be seeing more snowfall and heavy snowfall for the rest of today. So it sure sounds like youre going to break some records up there. What are you telling all of your residents at this hour . Just hunker down stay in continue to do what youre prepared to do. Anyone that listened to what the information that the town was putting out sure is prepared quite well. And were there if you need us. Were just a phone call away and just ask them again to continue to stay off the roads until this thing is completely over and done and theyre hearing locally that its okay to go back out. We understand theres blustery winds, weve been seeing you fight the elements brave the elements out there, michaela. Tell us whats going on. If youre dressed for it alisyn its fine. Good morning, everybody, yeah we were scheduled to get down to our live location here in new London Connecticut this morning, my producer and i got up bright and early, ready to go yeah. The whole idea of the travel ban is not only just to keep you safe but also to keep you from getting frustrated. Youre not going anywhere. The plow we just saw a plow come right through the parking lot of the hotel where were staying. So were going to attempt to get to our other location here in a little bit. The snow i want to show you this alisyn. Its actually pretty light. Its not that heavy kind of snow that im used to on the west coast. Its pretty powdery. It would be great to ski in. Its pretty powdery and night if youre going to do any snow clearance, take your time youre in no rush you cant get anywhere anyway so take your time. We know you can get yourself into a little bit of fatigue trouble if youre out there shoveling. Theres a blizzard warning in effect for most of connecticut at this point. From areas down in the southeast, danbury, bridgeport southwest, pardon me. That are not under the blizzard warning, much like new york city where the warning for the blizzard has lifted. But you can see the snow is really coming down. Every once in a while. Check that out. Look at that. I dont know if you can see that wind alisyn but the gusts, were measuring wind gusts, the Weather Service is measuring about 45mileperhour gusts. When its not windy, its actually very calm and peaceful and the snow is just falling. Around 3 00 a. M. The national Weather Service said that there was about eight inches of snow falling. We were out here around 4 30 a. M. And it sure felt more than just the eight inches. You have to remember the wind is pushing all of the snow into drifts you can see good evidence around the pillar theres a lot of snow on the ground. Some of it is moving because of the wind. But it continues and its not stopped snowing. Were in the thick of it theyre expecting it throughout the day. Theyre expecting the blizzard warning to last throughout the day today. So thats the big question here. Now obviously plowing, power, whats going to happen . We havent seen evidence where we are of Power Outages. So far the power has remained at this hotel where were staying at. They said they dont have a generator. A lot of places dont, they dont expect this kind of weather. They had a storm like this were told in 2013. But they were not expecting this level, this late into the winter. So obviously were going to kind of see what goes on today here this morning. Were going it try to get the car of ours out of this parking lot. Plow came through, did a couple of passes. Were going to see if we can get down to our other location get a sense of how things are going here. Obviously plowing for the city is paramount. But again, small towns, budget constraints, who knows how many plows they have out. Well try to get a sense of that and report back to you later. That state, no stranger to severe snowstorms theyll be put to the test with whats coming their way. Two years ago they lived a real disaster up there we have sara ganim in providence. As the sun starts could come up the situation not necessarily better. Youre still dealing with the winds of the stalled storm. How are you now . Were still dealing with the gusts of wind chris that are tropical stormforce gusts and just in the last few minutes weve learned that the snowfall has picked up the temperature is dropping. The national Weather Service says that theres an accumulation of more than ten inches of snow in Providence Rhode island. The temperature has dropped two degrees since we last talked. I want to show thaw while we have about ten inches of accumulation on the ground the drifts take a look at this chris, the drifts are pretty deep. I would say more like, clothesser to a foot of drifts of snow in some place places if not higher. We have good news the plow trucks the salt trucks are keeping the roads relatively clean, so if you walk out on the road youre not seeing the same accumulation but it is most certainly the winds, this is the peak hours for the wind. This is what weve been weve been standing out here all morning and the winds have not been as strong as they have been up until this point. At least thats how they feel. Chris . Sara well check back with you. One of the tests of government in this situation is the management over time of the conditions. Everybody has got a lot of equipment and a lot of road salt and sand, but its when do they use it they dont want to run out and get caught with bad conditions. One of the states you havent heard about a lot this morning. Is also going to really get hit here is maine. And we have Lynnette Miller a spokesperson for the maine Emergency Management agency on the phone. Ms. Miller what are you dealing with up there . Whats the range of impact and what are the concerns . The storm is just winding up here in the state of maine. We have blizzard warnings that are going to be in place all day today and into tomorrow morning. As with all of the states up and down the east coast, Road Conditions are of prime concern. The governor declared a state of emergency this morning and is urging everyone to stay off the roads. He has closed all state offices and a number of other businesses and offices as followed suit today. So the number one thing were hoping for is people do comply with that and our crews are able to keep up with the Road Conditions as best they can. What are the concerns about power . Obviously we get caught up with snow and snow totals and wind. But really its about their effect and thats obviously going to be about power and people being stuck where they are. What do you know so far . Well right now were not seeing huge Power Outages. As i say the storm is just beginning to wind up. The only good news is that it will be very dry snow so we dont expect snow accumulation on the wires. But the winds that were expecting can easily bring down tree limbs and so we are expecting at least scattered Power Outages and were hoping that it wont be worse than that. Right. Theres something deceptive about what were dealing with in the coverage right now. People see where i am in new york city and they say its not that bad and some of the totals arent what we thought they would be. We have two things to deal with. One is the range of impact. There are many places like where you are, a very different story than here in new york city and also how long how long do you people up there in maine think you have to be on alert for this . Well the warnings are in place through wednesday morning. So we know that actual storm conditions are going to persist at least that long. But after that there will be a clean up period. If there are Power Outages, it will be difficult to get to them. The utilities will act as fast as they can. But if the road is blocked, they cant get there any Power Outages, if sustained, could last a while. Whats your biggest vulnerability at this point . We have a great many elderly residents, were a grayer state. But one of the strongest things we have going for us here in maine is the neighbortoneighbor mentality and we expect that that will help everyone weather the storm. Welcome back to new day, were giving you full coverage of what is shaping up to be an historic blizzard. The question is where. Here in new york a tale of two cities. To be sure. Here in new york beautiful sublime, people starting to move around. About 22 degrees. We got ten inches of snow and thats called a miss. So ten inches of snow in new york city, and that is about as good as youre going to see. Now out at the end of long island on montauk, such a different situation, you get to see the different face of the blizzard, we have Christina Alesci there. It was tough, its going to get tougher out there how is it now . Well the sun sup. So thats making Visibility Conditions quite good. As i mentioned before chris, im standing by the water. Youve only been able to tell now at this point that were at the ocean. You can see right here the ocean and how bad and how rough it is. That said you know one major area of concern in this community is beach erosion. That has to do with both the tide and how far it comes up. And where the waves are breaking. The waves are breaking quite far out and theyre really not that high. We were expecting somewhere between 10 and 15foot waves. And were a little bit below that right now. So its actually looking quite good. But were not in the heart of where the ocean actually pounds the beach here in montauk. That area is a little bit further east in town. And that area was hit really really hard by Superstorm Sandy. In fact the army yy corps of engineers is in the middle of rebuilding that area. Theyre doing it with these things called geotubes that are filled with sand and other compounds and covered with sand and grass, hopefully in the an effort to preserve that part of montauk. Chris, its going to get a lot worse out here. Well be out here all day and im sure ill talk to you more about how the weather conditions are developing. Stay warm christina. The high tide is at about 3 00 in the afternoon, local time. 10 to 15foot waves because of the wind conditions. That area is not used to seeing that type of battering, even though that is the surf area out there here in new york city the stock market is going to open. The city is coming back to life. Were going to start hearing from the mayor soon about what will be turned back on in the city in terms of services the governor is going to give a press Conference Soon and i know you have him on the phone. We do. We saw how difficult the conditions are in some parts of new york. Joining us on the phone is the governor of new york andrew cuomo. Good morning, governor. Nice to speak with you. Nice to speak with you. We understand you called a press conference for 8 00 a. M. What will you be announcing . Well be announcing that at 8 00 a. M. The roads in new york city downstate area that we closed last night, which is the Hudson Valley new york city long island will be reopening. I spoke to governor christie in new jersey i spoke to governor malloy in connecticut. And obviously when you reopen the roads, we need to be coordinated. You dont want people on the new york city roads, driving to jersey unless jerseys open and viceversa. So jersey and new york will be opening on coordinated schedule at 8 00. All the bans will be lifted. Connecticut is making the temperatures. Connecticut got hit harder than the downstate region in new york and there will be making the determination as to what areas to open or not. And we do want to make sure were coordinated in the tristate area. As your broadcast says correctly so long island is a different story than new york city. And long island did get hit harder. The good news is since we didnt have cars on the road we were very successful at clearing the roads and well be in a position at 8 00 to open the nassau and Suffolk County roads. That will come as a huge relief to new yorkers. They like to get where they want to go. What about the Public Transportation system . The trains subways, the buses . Will those be in use . Were doing that assessment now and well have that announcement at 8 00 alisyn. What we did last night was, the advantage of closing down the system was we could put the trains and the Railroad Cars in a safe place. So theyre not damaged during the storm. Were now in the process of bringing the cars out and reassembling the system. And well have an announcement at 8 00 what lines are up and when. The storm in new york city was not as bad as the forecasters had predicted. Long island it was bad. But you know this is this is the business we are in right . A few weeks ago, the forecasters actually underpredicted, im sorry overpredicted. And this time it was a little less than predicted. But better safe than sorry, thats my rule. That makes sense, governor. Obviously predicting the weather and Mother Nature is an imprecise science as weve seen. Would you say that now, knowing what you know hindsight being 20 20, that you wouldnt have imposed a travel ban, knowing the snow at most in new york was going to be six to ten inches . Hindsight is 20 20, you act on the information you have at the time. The last thing i want to do are close roads and close the transportation system. Its expensive, it slows business et cetera. Its my last recourse but ill tell what you, alisyn weve, weve gotten risky the other way. And had forecasts and didnt close roads, and it was actually worse than predicted. And weve been in situations where weve lost lives. So this is nothing to trifle with and id rather be a little safe than sorry. We put a travel ban in place, 11 00 last night. Not a lot of people were traveling after 11 00. And again, the good news is since there was nobody on the roads, we could actually clear them. And since the trains and rails were in a safe place, theyll be coming online faster than usual. So i dont know that we didnt save time net when you consider everything at the end of the day. But again at 8 00 well have an update on the Public Transportation system. Governor whats the status of Power Outages in the region . Weve had scattered Power Outages. But again, weve been able to get to the problem area. Which is normally the issue. Since the roads have been empty, weve been able to get to the problem area and weve been getting them up quickly. But theyre scattered outages, nothing serious at this time. Governor our audience is obviously across the country and across the world. Theyre interested in the airports being open. Do you have a status update for us on whether or not the area airports will be functioning today . There are two factors there. How fast we can clear the airports and were doing a good job on that. And how fast the airlines can get back up to speed. And again, were putting that together as we speak, alisyn and well have that updated at 11 00, 8 00 one point if i might, i just want to say that i think chris cuomo is not only doing a very good job today. But wearing a very attractive hat i may note alisyn it really compliments his features well. Im sure hell appreciate your fashion advice as he always appreciates your advice when you come on new day and make comments like this. Governor. But governor, what are you telling new yorkers at this hour to do . Can they go back to work . 8 00 the travel ban will be lifted well give them an update as to what Public Transportation will be up and running. And but all of this with a note of caution ive been all over the metropolitan area. The roads are passable. But the roads are not, are still dangerous. Theres a light snow with an ice underneath. The plows have been working, salt trucks have been working, but it is not to be taken lightly. Were not saying that you should go out unless you really need to go out. And there will be delays on the roads. But we think we can lift the travel ban in coordination with our neighboring states. And well start to bring the Public Transportation system back online. Last governor it sounds as though long island was the hardest hit on montauk. There is some coastal flooding are you going to pay a visit out there . I will be out on long island today. I was there last night. Long island did get hit, you know this is the trajectory for us alisyn as the storm comes up the coast, hits new york city but wraps around to the east and tends to hit long island harder because its a barrier island. So the east side of long island gets hid, Suffolk County the tip of long island gets especially hard hit. And they have again here. We have very high gusts, up to 70 Miles Per Hour. Last night, we have two feet of snow. In many areas. So the damage may not have been as bad in the new york city area. And a little bit north, the westchester area. But long island was very badly hit. Again because there was no one on the roads, weve done a good job with the roads. But there was a lot of damage and theres a lot of snow. And still, well need to exercise caution. Do not go out unless you need to go out. The roads are dangerous. In fact we just got an updated report that islip, the town of islip has 18. 2 inches of snow on the ground. So certain areas certainly did get hard hit. Well alisyn we seeing a couple of snowplows that have made their way, this road was just plowed. You can see the danger theyre getting off the top layer, but not the bottom layer, youve got a dangerous layer of ice here. When we left manhattan, it was easy as a matter of fact light snow many main roads had been cleared. Even the highway coming out to long island were about 40 miles out from manhattan heading towards the beaches, we stopped in islip, just to show you what the smaller towns, theyre actually quite large, are getting in terms of snowfall. Its falling steadily. Weather reports say its going to be another 12 to 18 inches weve seen a couple of people out on the road b. This sort of steady sheet of snow coming down well seen a couple of people walking. Weve seen a couple of people who are trying to get the snow off their driveways, but its very quiet. The travel ban has been lifted in new york city but its not been lifted out in these areas of long island. People being very careful. We want to emphasize that the media has been given an exemption, thats why we are driving. Were driving very slowly and carefully. Just looking out the window. Not many people awake at this hour. The lights in their houses arent on. People are taking advantage of what amounts to a bonus day. Although theyre going to have to pay at the end of the because digging out . Not a lot of fun, alisyn. Whats your take on what weve dealt with . We thought we were going to get something a lot bigger and to our east its much much worse, but here in new york city it came out much better than expected. Good news, the state just lifted the travel ban, so people can start to get back to normal. Our subways will be up and running later on this morning. Statinen island ferry is up and running now. You mentioned the subway you have the bigger bans metro north, amtrak, those are following a similar pattern. Theyll start to come back online during the course of the morning. I cant speak for amtrak but the metro north, et cetera. Were dealing with range, here we have six to eight inches and out on long island islip, very different. Almost a foot and a half theyre projected to thats not far from here and obviously we know boston is getting hid hit hard. This is a situation where the storm moved. It saved new york city and a lot of other places from a very difficult few days. But in the end we had to be prepared for what our neighbors just a little bit to the east are now actually experiencing. Of all the criticism you get as mayor of a big city like this. People today will be saying you scared me for nothing. Like i could have gone to work i could have done all these things whats your message . Better safe than sorry. We had a consensus from the meteorologists across the board, that this thing was going to be easily two feet. Thats what we were hearing late into yesterday, it was still projected to be close to two feet. Two feet of snow would have paralyzed this city. We did what was necessary to keep people safe. By getting everybody off the road the Sanitation Department could get out and clear the same with the state. By closing the roads, by holding back the subways to be safe now theyll get the lines up and quickly. This is a better safe than sorry scenario. If it had been what it was projected to be you and i would not be standing here. It would be up to here. They would probably see the mayor, they wouldnt see me. I would be covered in snow. One of the Silver Linings here and, again, maine, massachusetts, rhode island parts of connecticut, theyre going to be hit hard for many hours. Dont sleep on the blizzard because of whats happening in new york city. Correct. Reporter the Silver Lining may be that this was a chance for the city to come together all right, right . Everybody had to get in get to work. Did you see that . Did you feel this was a unifying thing, certainly would be welcome . Absolutely. I think people in the city first of all, i know people think of new yorkers as rough and tough people but new yorkers to their great credit we all take care of each other. One of the things that we emphasized was the need for people to get out, check their neighbors, check on Senior Citizens and anyone who is disabled. We said stay off the roads, they stayed off the roads. That allowed us to get ahead of this situation. So i think the response of the people of new york city was fantastic. People understood we have to keep people safe. By the way today, i want to emphasize, its still pretty bad on the streets even though the plows are catching up. Its still youve got to drive carefully, youve got to take precautions. Walking around its very slippery. Unless you have to travel its smart to stay in until things are a little bit better. Weve dodged the bullet. A lot of cleanup to do particularly as you go farther out into the outer burrows. This is nothing like we feared it would be. Again, everything was prepared. What im so proud of the people who work for this city they did their jb. They got everything ready. If we had been hit by two feet of snow they would have been ready to deal with it. Reporter i dont know if you were talking about this yet because i was busy making hot chocolate, but how much is this going to cost the city . Well get the estimate. If this had been two feet of snow at one point we were hearing it could have been three feet. You have to keep people safe. You cant put a price on that. Reporter when i was commuting to work this morning, which involved 20 steps across from my hotel to walk to work there were four massive garbage trucks with the snow plows on front in a convoy sort of heading out. So we were prepared. Yes. Reporter you know some would say over prepared but you can never know. You can never know. By the way, again, you heard the meteorologists across the board predicting. I think the lowest prediction i saw was about a foot and a half. Again, we heard some as high as three feet. And that was across the board. What we saw was a storm moved direction but where it hit it did sadly live up to expectation. I feel horrible for boston what theyre going through. The good news here if you get that kind of information, you can get ready. Not always perfect information, we understand that, but at least it allows us to prepare. Youd much rather than be ready for the worst than be caught off guard. Reporter look this is as good as you can expect in something thats legitimately a blizzard. Did you have enough capacity for all the people you had to take off the street last night . You know as you know what happens with the homeless very close to us here were you able to get people off and get them where they needed to be . Yes. We got out early. We got the message that anyone needed to come in we have a shelter, no questions asked. We had outreach teams out. That went very well. Once you put in such a clear message, travel bans et cetera it allows you to focus your resources on where people are who need help. I think that went pretty smoothly. Nypd was out there doing their job making sure people abided by the rules that were set. I think new yorkers did a great job. You go around the streets of the city last night, there were no cars on the streets and it allowed sanitation to get out there and clear it. Thats a beautiful thing. That means well be safe today. Reporter the mayor was talking earlier, alisyn that this city could use a unifying moment. All the government sources, the nypd out here helping people get across the circle that little bit of a blessing in that regard. Reporter absolutely. Now at 8 00 a. M. Rosa please tell us what youre dealing with there. Reporter hi. Good morning. You know the wind has been whistling through the buildings overnight and throughout the morning. The temperature, about 19 degrees with the wind chill about 2 degrees. I talked to the mayor. I want you to take a look around me. He told me that they were expecting about 30 inches of snow with about 2 to 4 inches an hour and just by looking around you can see theres a lot of white here. Now i want to kind of show you what were dealing with here so ive got a little measurement device here chris, that im hoping to pluck into the snow and youll be able to see for yourself exactly what were dealing with. This is on the side of the road so there is some plowing that has been going on and some snowdrifts but you can see right now right here about 27 inches inches. About 27 inches. Now i want to pluck over here in the middle of the road because youll see that a lot of this has been accumulating throughout the evening. And it really gives us a sense of what this community is dealing with. Over here you see about 19 inches. So it varies a little bit. Now, heres the thing, this community is about 30,000 people so how does a community with about 30,000 people deal with this . Chris, they told me theyre prioritizing they are plowing the main arteries to make sure that they dont get completely snowed in. Reporter rosa they have to do that in these situations. They have to start with the major arteries. The major thoroughfares and go through there even though everybody is stocked up on assets equipment, sand salt depending on the region, they still have to ragstion it. The duration of the blizzard as chad myers has been telling us will be particularly effective. Youll have 8, 10 12 hours more of conditions where you are. The temperature is colder and as a result the snow is a lot lighter and fluffier. There will be drifts there will be visibility problems there will be high winds. Just before 8 00 in the east. Im chris cuomo in new york city. This is the good news where we are. 6 to 8 inches of snow. The city is starting to reopen. The blizzard warning has passed. All of the different restrictions that have been placed on new york city and different areas surrounding it are being removed right now, but right now we have the governor of new york whos talking in a press conference about whats going on because new york city is not whats going on in long island. Very different situation. Listen. The snow was also less than had been originally predicted. With variations in the new york city area. Laguardia airport, lebanon, 11 1 2 inches of snow. So there were variances within the new york city area but basically less than predicted which was good news. Long island was much harder hit than the new york city area. 16 inches on long island. Suffolk county is still getting hit very hard and Suffolk County is where we have serious issues. The track of the storm as it moved north, Suffolk County is the far end of long island, montaulk point montauk point. They have blizzardlike conditions 12 inches of snow 14 inches of snow. We will be redeploying much of the equipment from the new york city area midhudson area to long island and specifically to suffolk. We are lifting all of the traffic bans on the roads at 8 00. Nassau suffolk, new york city westchester, rock land olster the 13 county area that was affected will be lifted at 8 00. We coordinated that with the governor of new jersey Chris Christie who i spoke with this morning. Obviously you cant open the traffic ban on one state unless youre coordinated with the other states because you dont want people on the roads in new jersey trying to get to new york if they cant get to new york and vice versa. So we have a coordinated opening with governor Chris Christie at 8 00. I also spoke with governor molloy governor of connecticut. They also have a varied situation, and theyre making determinations now to open parts of their roads and parts will remain closed. Were coordinating with them. The nta is in the process of bringing the trains back out, subway and rail. They will put they were put away yesterday, last night, in an area protected from the weather. They are now redeploying as we speak. Service will begin coming online at 9 00. By noon the system should be back to sunday service. Which is roughly 60 of the weekday service. The bridges and tunnels reporter the situation in new york state very different from new york city to long island. We can show it to you. Lets get to christina aleshi montauk. High winds, lots of snowfall and the storm has stalled over that area for now. Theres going to be a lot of duration of exposure to this. Christina, how are you doing so far . Reporter well its cold wet, and windy, chris. And we just heard the governor say that theyre going to lift the travel ban in Suffolk County. Of course montauk is part of Suffolk County. We are hearing from locals that not all the roads are clear yet. You know the one in town just a few miles east of here thats not clear yet and the snow just keeps piling up. Ive been doing live shots from this very location all morning. Every time i come out here the snow is deeper. I can barely stand in it. And another significant issue of concern here is of course the ocean. This is a community that got hit significantly hard by Superstorm Sandy. If you take a look my camera woman is pointing to a house. This is a restaurant the town had to rebuild because the ocean basically swept it away during Superstorm Sandy. Were not seeing the tide come up very high of course as you mentioned high tide is later this afternoon. The winds right now are breaking a little bit further out. Were not seeing too much concern about the tide and the waves right now. But this isnt the most crucial point. Actually its just a few miles east of here. The town we hear theres a lot of concern about beach erosion on the town side of things. Of course the officials and the army corps of engineers were just starting to rebuild the town beach and now they have this significant weather event yet again. And as youve been mentioning all morning, this is just beginning for the town of montauk, the town of really easthampton which montauk is part of. People are staying inside. They arere heeding the warnings by not only the officials but also the county officials. And, you know well have to see how this plays out. Its not looking too good right now, chris. Reporter unfortunately, christina, as you point out youve got a lot of time left. You try to get warm. Let me talk to chad myers, our meteorologist and try to get the science side of this. You know from my understanding of it i know long island very well obviously. Reporter yes. Reporter these places are already vulnerable. Most of them are sea level, right . Because theyre right there on the coast. Youve told me that this storm has actually stalled over those areas. Whats going on . Reporter water is getting pushed into Long Island Sound. Although were on the ocean side the bay side of this is getting filled up with water, and thats the surge were seeing from this. A lot like sandy had reverse surge into Long Island Sound and the water backed up from east to west or from south to north, didnt expect that but that happened. Were still seeing the approach to islip, the approach to montauk, the approach over to block island and cape cod in the next few hours. Its not even there yet. So as it travels up the east coast were still hours and hours away from the worst that shes going to see or for boston. I just looked at the new models for boston and its at least another foot of reporter another foot . Reporter another foot often top of what they have now. That will make their total somewhere around 26 inches by the time it stops. Now if you get down towards plymouth and sandwich they already have 18. You add 10 or 12 to that youre talking 30 inches. Those are the numbers they were talking about yesterday, but those are the numbers that we didnt get here thank goodness because this town could have been crippled with a 25 inch snowfall. Reporter theres something deceptive about the un evenness. In new york city, it will be fine. Not so depending where you are. Reporter true. What happened with this storm, its far enough out to sea that it made all snow. A lot of times this storm would have been 50 miles closer what we saw in that picture would be right here. But it has moved off to the right a little bit. New haven, connecticut, getting it Providence Rhode island boston. We missed it. Millions of people got missed by a 6 to 10 inch snowfall. Out there millions of people are still getting hit. Reporter you take good news where you can find it. This is good news that they didnt get hit. Nobody wants to have the type of devastation that you get in these big areas. As chads saying millions more still exposed. We showed you the eastern end of long island. You heard chad running through the geography of where were going to see it. Massachusetts up into maine. Well check in with them again. Connecticut. Thats where michaela is. She went up there last night. By the time they got ready for it just a few hours later, the suv was stuck. Shes been coming to us through skype this morning. Heavy snow and a lot of wind as well. Michaela how have things changed sings we last spoke . Reporter mr. Cuomo, we have an update my friend. Let me tell you a story. Reporter please. Reporter we were stuck in the parking lot at our hotel about three miles where i am from where i am now. We found a friendly plow drivers by the name of patrick. Patrick gallagher hooked us up, drove us the three miles to this location. So im in front of a real to goodness Live Television camera. Thank goodness for skype. It got us on the air. What we see is indicative of the situation in connecticut where there is a blizzard warning still in effect. We saw a whole lot of snow even the patrick the plow driver was commenting. Hes lived here a long time and he says its been a long while since theyve seen anything the likes of this. What makes it further complicated is not just the amount of snow the wind. Im trying to figure out the wind pattern. You try to turn away from the wind and you get a face full of snow because the wind changes direction every five seconds. Thats causing massive drifting. We saw cars parked along the street for the night. People heeding the warning of the governor stay off the roads, hunker down stay inside and watch movies. Their cars are covered. You can barely see the tops of the cars. On the way here we saw a few stubborn people trying to get places in vehicles that arent really fit for getting around in this kind of snow. We saw plow drivers trying to help them out, trying to dig them out. We saw a whole lot of big, bhig equipment out trying to clear the roads as well i want to tell you. A few years ago cpl and p got spanked by a storm. They have crews out in advance making sure they have crews ready to get trees out of the way, to clear any roads that they can. We asked the plow driver who is a commercial driver takes care of some of these Retail Properties here he was telling us that hes seen the federal crews out on the highways and theyre working to clear those as much as they can. Theres a question of staying ahead of it. This snow is coming down. In the last few minutes of where ive been standing here weve seen an inch accumulate by my feet. Ive been out here for 20 minutes. This is a losing proposition. Well be encountering our good friends in london. A smugglely and warm area. Youve got a snow day. Reporter you are going to be there. Reporter this has stalled where you went to. One of the reasons you cant tell it. Youre getting a circular net effect. Youre in the next 12 hours of snow youre waiting it out. The endurance of it. Reporter we were standing here. A few people braving the elements. Its not horrifically cold. This gal came walking down the street dressed for it. I asked her where she was going. She says im going to work. My boss says i could stay the night but i told him id rather stay in my own bed and id see him at work the next morning. She was walking to work. Shes like isnt it beautiful . It really is beautiful. If you dont have to go anywhere and can just get outside and say this is pretty youll enjoy it but otherwise, dont try and go anywhere. Reporter its true. Theres a big range of experience that people are having from ive been saying all morning from the sublime to severe. For us here in new york city its a beautiful thing to see. The stock market is opening, the city is opening. In so many places theyre going to be hit really hard. Mich ill check back with you. Ill pop up to boston. Meteorologist Jennifer Gray a very different story there because as chad youve been explaining the rotation of this storm and its sitting over these coastal areas, specifically massachusetts, even obviously boston right off the bay there. Reporter thats right. Reporter theyre going to be dealing with this all day. Reporter the Science Behind this is called the deformation zone. The entire swirl. The part of the hoho we talked about is sitting over the same spot now and it is snowing and will snow 2 to 3 inches per hour for the next 12 hours. Some spots could be 20 more inches. Because its staying in the same spot as the low moves away that swirl stays in the same spot and thats islip, thats montauk, parts of rhode island and boston. Reporter mich is seeing swirling wind. Thats going to create the turbin effects. Reporter yes. Reporter obviously power lines get into the mix. Reporter the winds are picking up and the low is getting stronger. As the winds pick up that will blow the snow over where the plows just plowed. Reporter one of the tricks is to say, look were not going to hype whats happening here. This is the good news. It is not all of the news now. Jennifer gray meteorologist up in boston youre dealing with the severe side of this. Again, you have a long way to go but how has it progressed . Reporter yeah. I mean its just been coming down steadily over the last several hours since weve been out here since about 5 00 this morning. The snow has been coming down at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. You see the wind gusts that come along with it. I have my weather station out here. Its clocked wind gusts of 25 Miles Per Hour. This one that were having at the moment is probably the strongest weve had since weve been out here. The snow that blows is literally blinding. You cant see anything. You can barely see your hand in front of your face when the gusts come and blow the snow. Thats what were talking about with the blowing snow. Thats what creates the blizzardlike conditions out here. Look behind me. Its just blowing so hard and the snow is basically being picked up off the ground and carried. Weve been measuring out here. We have now made it up to a foot or more here in boston of course with the snow being blown and carried like this it is very hard to measure. Of course the national Weather Service in boston is holding off to declare this an official blizzard until it dies down a little bit. This has been plowed 20 minutes ago and a new plow came through 30 seconds ago. In 20 minutes we have a couple of inches on the ground. A lot of this of course due to the blowing snow but a lot of it is just because it is coming down so so heavy. We also have reports about 13,000 people without power around nantucket. Otherwise, about 1,000 more people statewide without power. We have that wind gust close to 80 Miles Per Hour around nantucket as well. A lot of that is probably the Power Outages probably a lot to do with that those strong winds there. We also have coastal flooding reports just south of here. Were protected here in the harbor being in boston but areas south of here chris, definitely not as lucky as we are being protected. They have the coastal flooding also a little bit of coastal erosion going on there as well. You can see from the pictures it is nasty here in boston. And to think that we have 12 18 more hours of this this is going to be a mess by the time we get to tomorrow morning. And, jennifer just quickly, give us an expectation not a prediction but as you have low temperatures more snow and that wind going there, what can that mean for the power lines and all the infrastructure that people worry about . Reporter yeah. I think the winds are the main thing when we talk about the power. I mean the snow is really not accumulating on the power lines because you just look at it its so light. And then when you have the winds blowing like that its just going to blow it off. Were not going to see really the snow accumulating on there. When you have the strong winds and the gusts like weve seen in nantucket of 60 70 Miles Per Hour, thats when you get those Power Outages. It correlates perfectly. Thats where weve had the strongest wind gusts and the most Power Outages with about 13,000 people right there in nantucket. No Power Outages in boston but if we pick up strong wind gusts, i wouldnt be surprised if people lost power. Right now were keeping our fingers crossed that that doesnt happen. So far so good in boston but if the winds keep up chris, i dont think well be quite as lucky. Reporter jenn, thanks for sucking it up. Well check back in with you a little bit. The state capital has 10 inches already. Its not over. Lets bring in providence mayor. Good morning, mr. Mayor. Good morning, alisyn. Great to be here zbll how was your night . We had a great night. Im at the emergency Operations Center. I spent the entire day, evening, and ill be here throughout the duration of the storm. Making sure were tracking the storm and tracking all incidents trying to stay ahead of the storm as much as possible. Im very happy to report that we had absolutely no Motor Vehicle accidents last night, that the travel ban in effect weve asked everyone to stay home. Im so proud of our residents. Everyone has heeded our advice and our warnings. Everyone is chipping in. Weve planned and were executing. The toughest part of the storm is still ahead but im confident that with the city the state, and all of our res accidents putting it together were going to be fine and in good shape. How many inches of snow do you have on the ground right now . Right now i believe we have about 10 inches and its coming down pretty heavy. One of the tricky things about this storm is its very light and dry snow and with the heavy gusts of wind as soon as we plow the snow from the streets, the wind blows it back into the road and so its a constant effort. We have over 100 pieces of equipment out on the streets plowing the roads and its a challenge to stay out ahead of the storm but we have fine teams out there in the city and the state making sure we keep the roads clean for emergency respond ers responders. The toughest part is yet to come. Weve heard the storm has parked itself over your area. How many more hours of this do you think you have . Yeah well were getting ready for this to last throughout the entire day. From what i understand the next several hours will be very very intense and strong but even after it calms down theres going to be strong snow throughout the day, maybe well into the evening. Were ready for this. The big challenge and immediate challenge is not just the snow but its also the wind gusts that might bring down trees and the trees might bring down some power lines. Were working very closely with National Grid were responding to any incidents where the power is off and working diligently to restore the heat with National Grid and our Public Safety officers as well. He is with the nantucket Police Department. Is he also the director of Emergency Management. Chief pittman, tell us what is happening on nantucket at this hour. Good morning. Right now were just trying to deal with the power outage problem that we have. Weve lost power to the entire island. Right now were working with National Grid to come up with a solution. It appears to be a problem at the main feed into the island. Plus we have a little bit of flooding and we have some downed power wires. Weve lost cable service, that kind of thing. Thats tough, chief pittman, because then people arent even able to watch television hear the updates of what they should do. How many people live on the island of nantucket . Well theres probably this time of year maybe 15 to 20,000. And so all 15 to 20,000 at this hour are without power . Thats correct. We understand that you on nantucket have experienced the strongest winds of this entire storm. According to the national Weather Service, you experienced peak gusts at 78 Miles Per Hour. Those, of course are hurricane strength. What was it like last night and this morning for you . Well to be honest with you, thats a lot of wind but weve had worse out here. But the worst part is the steady winds have been pretty i think they were approaching close to 50 mile an hour and those were harder to deal with than the gusts. We had gusts last winter up in the 90s at some times. Thats scary. I mean nantucket is an island of some beach homes, you know, not its not necessarily equipped for the conditions that youre experiencing now. Is anyone displaced or in shelters . Well we have about a dozen people in a shelter right now. Some of them are there just because its a warm place to go and others are there because their cottages were down on the waterfront and they were flooded as a result of this mornings high tide and the storm surge. That flooding is ordinarily it wasnt unexpected but ordinarily it would have dissipated by now because the tides going back down but because of the direction of the wind the water is being held into the harbor and its been holding the flood waters in. Yeah. The storm surge is certainly a challenge on nantucket because by definition you know your entire island is a coast. Yes. How much flooding are you seeing . Well it mainly just occurs in the downtown area off the harbor. The entrance to the harbor is to the north and its a narrow inlet, and what happens, the water comes in at tide and then the wind if its coming from the northeast or the north, holds it in there. Doesnt let it flow back out very easily. And then you get the melting snow that hits the roads and it just adds to it. If someone on nantucket is having an emergency, can First Responders get to them . Right now weve got access we believe, to 99 of the island. Theres areas obviously we havent been to but pretty much we dont believe theres anybody living there. Weve got lists of people that have concerns that weve made contact with and are arranging shelter for them either at the hospital or the our Emergency Shelter and weve got some elderly homes, places where people live where were making arrangements with them to take them to shelter if and when they get to the point they feel that they want to. Chief, were looking at pictures right now. This comes from the nantucket Police Department and its showing the flooding that youre experiencing. And just this is a tweet that the nantucket Police Department your Police Department just sent out. Yeah. So were able to see the flooding there. When you say you have a list of concerns of residents, are these medical concerns . Are people without heat . What are you experiencing there . Well everybody, nobody unless you have a wood burning stove or gas burning stove or something has heat right now. All of our lights all of our electricity is out. My own home my family is trying to decide whether theyre going to go to a friends house that has wood burning stove or if theyre going to just hunker down for a while. So basically everybody here is making that kind of decision right now and were reaching out to people that for instance may be on oxygen supply or they may have some medical issues that were aware ever maybe they have difficulty mobility issues were reaching out to them and offering them transportation to an appropriate facility. Chief, that is a tough situation. We are pulling for you. We sure hope that you can get the electricity restored and heat restored. Obviously nantucket cannot go long without heat. And the story of blizzard 2015. The theme has been from the sublime to the severe. Here obviously the sublime in new york city about 6 to 8 inches. Its beautiful here. The city is reopening. Obviously the blizzard warning is gone but just outside new york city into long island, massachusetts massachusetts, all the coastal areas, connecticut, rhode island maine, the severe situation. Over a foot of snow. Another foot expected. The conditions will be bad for 12 14 hours. A big snowplow coming by, thats a sign of progress for new york city. Chad myers, it will be easy for people to sleep on this if theyre seeing the picture here that would be a mistake. Reporter yeah because if you go east of here 50 miles youre 18 to 24 inches still coming. This was great. 8 to 10 for new york city. The farther west 6 inches farther east hempstead, you get 12 inches. Somewhere in there. This is considered a miss compared to what was expected what was talked about on one of the computer models yesterday which said 24 inches of snow. Now the new model that the Weather Service put 3 million into the computer, upgrading the process said 8 inches in new york city and it got it right. From maine to massachusetts into rhode island all the way down into long island. We will still get some snow here in new york maybe another inch but nothing that will paralyze the city like this all could have happened. Reporter so the models worked at least one of them did. Now we know which one to use. The brandnew Model Looks Like it worked. It did better. We got a lot of criticism. It did better than the european model this time. Were happy about that. The new north american model doing very very well. Reporter you were saying yesterday that the high estimates seemed exaggerated to you for new york city. You always have to wait and see. The worst case would be if you told us we were going to get 6, we got 16 then we have concerns. People lose their lives and livelyhoods. This is the right way to go in terms of estimating. The other side of this is michaela. Michaela, you are yo up in connecticut. Its going to be getting hit. Millions of people in harms way for hours and hours to come. Whats the latest . Reporter look. The winds are kicking up. Its sort of sustained gustiness if that makes sense. We were hearing reports of 45 mile per hour gusts. New information that weve just gotten the governor of connecticut, i dont know if you can even still see me as the snow is swirling around me, has partially lifted the travel ban for western connecticut. That includes Fairfield County. Were trying to get a sense of what exactly that means because in terms of clearance of roads where we are here in new london were right in the heart of new london and its very difficult to get around. Theres no really a plow goes by every once in a while, but its hard for them to know even where to star. I i know theyre working on the main arteries. Youre not going to see any clearance. Weve seen emergency vehicles going by. Nothing pressing no lights or sirens. Reporter john come to me. Ill come back to mich. Look at the plows coming by kbar beige trucks. Nine of them in a row. Theyre trying to get Columbus Circle open. Take a look at this 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 10 of them. Theyre not even salting, theyre coordinating how to get around the circle. Watch as they keep moving now. Mich you cant see it where you are, but theyre doing Columbus Circle here. Theres like a whole army of these massive plows. Its like a sin cloe nisyncronicity, right . Theyre taking it from the top camera on time warp ner. You see them moving around. Thats how they got the circle cleared in two passes. There must have been 6, 7 inches of snow there. Thats amazing. Youre nowhere near to this where theyre getting the road cleared for people to drive. Whats the latest . Reporter theyre trying to get the roads cleared, but people should not be on the roads in boston. You were talking about how fast they cleared out Columbus Circle. Let me show you what were doing in boston. This is one of the plows thats out here. Hes clearing off the sidewalk. Definitely a lot slower process. If you can swing over there skip he is a little tiny bobcat right there. Hes pushing the snow back. Hes been going at it for about 30 passes and hasnd had quite the same response that you had in Columbus Circle. They do have the huge plows out there on the streets and thats what theyve been using to clear here in boston. Theyre having to take passes frequently because the snow as you can see, is coming down heavily. 2 to 3 inches per hour at least and the winds are really blowing. The winds have picked up over the last hour or two. This is where we plowed just about 20 minutes ago. Its already starting to pile up once again. Its not only the rate of the snowfall. You have the winds blowing at 30 40 Miles Per Hour. Its picking up this snow thats so light and fluffy on the ground. It is blowing it all around. Its making visibility down to about 1 4 of a mile and even less at times. So thats what were talking about here in boston. Thats why were keeping people off of the road. Its keeping the snow off the power lines, thats the good news because its blowing it off. When you get wind gust the like theyve had in nantucket at 60 70 Miles Per Hour thats when you lose power. There is a delicate balance of keeping the snow off the power lines but keeping the winds down low enough to where you dont lose power, chris. Were going to be in this for the next 12 to 18 hours. Hopefully we wont lose power in boston. Other places have like nantucket. Theyre seeing that coastal flooding as well in other parts of massachusetts. All right, jen, well check back with you. Parts of our state are doing really well and parts of our state are getting pounded right now. The eastern portion or the 395 corridor or the southeastern portion, however you want to refer to it, is seeing 24 inches of snow and blinding winds and its a very difficult situation. Closer to new york city things are not as bad as they might have been what im saying to my citizens is its not so bad some people didnt get 3 feet of snow. Reporter lets go with the continuing threat. When about the Power Outages and the duration of 12 to 18 hours of exposure to the storm that seems to be sitting on top of you right now . The system the electrical system is holding up pretty well. In fact our largest outage was caused by a snowplow hitting a pole and taking out about 573 houses. That was one shot. The rest of it is holding pretty well. This is not a snowfall thats binding to anything which is helping prevent wind damage to what would otherwise be a large cable in the air because its not binding to it. So far so good. The utilities seem to be responding pretty well. The average repair was about an hour and a half. So i have no complaints there. Obviously duration is a problem, but i hope this system is going to move out. I hope at some point it starts to move up the coast and away from connecticut and then out to sea. Are you able to redeploy assets from the areas that werent that hard hit to the coastal areas and those where you believe its going to be worse . We will be able to do that at an appropriate time. We closed our highway system down and travel ban went into effect at 9 00 p. M. There was a lot of snowfall at that point. From 9 00 p. M. Until about 7 30 this morning we had a total of 11 accidents. Thats a period of time in which we would have expected hundreds of accidents. We only had one minor injury. Its a period of time that we would have expected many injuries and perhaps fatalities so the steps that we have taken have worked thus far. People in connecticut have honored those steps. Im very appreciative. As a result i think by and large well be back to normal for most of our state tomorrow. Im feeling good about that. But there was a lot of preparation and there was a lot of hard work thats gone into this. You know im confident that the people of connecticut understand that were all working and pulling in the same direction. If nobody wants to close down less than government it costs you millions of dollars and you lose commerce but you have to do when the situation calls.
