Serious to critical t. Ebola patient now fighting for his life after being diagnosed almost a week ago in dallas. On friday, his family was relocated to an undisclosed location. Their apartment where duncan was staying is finally being sanitized. They had lived in the home for six days after he was diagnosed. Anything in the area will be completely stripped out, dcon from the carpet to the curtains. Reporter over the weekend, authorities found the last of the 48 people they say pay have come in contact with duncan in dallas after a daylong man hunt, including this man. Lively escorted to the hospital in full surgical garb, a mask covering his face. All ten high risk patients, mostly Health Care Workers have shown no symptoms as of yet. This as the fifth american arrives back in the u. S. From liberia this morning. The father of an nbc freelanceer told the Providence Journal newspaper he still has the fever but his spirits are very good. He will be the second ebola patient treated in omaha. He will be transported through a remote area of the airport, away from terminals and public areas. Now, screening at the airport may be a little more complicated than it sounds. There are few, if any, direct flights from west africa to the United States. People are flying mostly through connections. You got people arriving through africa from various points around the globe. A strong point. It seems they have their hands full, the screening they do already. We will stay on that angle. All right. Lets talk more about that. The head of the cdc will head to the white house today to brophy president obama on all these concerns and questions. Our jim akosta is already there. So, jim, extra airport screenings. Is that what the white house is considering today . Reporter it is possible, and we should point out president obama meets with his National Security team to talk about our efforts to deal with the ebillion la outbreak in west africa. One measure under consideration, as you said and elizabeth said is to have the cdc screening from travellers from west africa. One cdc official told me they want to make sure it is not a disruption to travelers. It nos determined which airports will have those screenings. Top Health Officials in the Obama Administration remain confident an outbreak in the United States can be prevented. They will be talking about that. The president will want some answers. Thanks, so much for that update. Lets go to chris. We need analysis on this. Lets bring in cnn security analyst and secretary of the department of Homeland Security and cnn aviation analyst and formering is ernl e general at the department of medicine. National institutes of health on fox, when you start closing off countries. There the a real danger of making things worse. Cdc director thomas freend said ebola is spreading so favourite, it is hard to keep up. You dont need to be a doctor, julia, to know those two statements dont go together. Is this a message issue or do we not need to know what to do. Im definitely not a doctor. I will try to interpret what may be going on, which is to put greater restrictions at the airport may be a lot of effort in an area that might be put elsewhere. In other words, because the ebola contagion doesnt show for seven or fin days, you will not catch people from west africa to london on paris and then come over. So then you will require almost like, you know, sort of security across the board and not allowing people in from many other countries. The second issue is one the white house is not discussing, i think has got to play into it. We have three to 5,000 troops in west africa right now. To put a travel been on particular countries pay actually cause more unrest there, more sense of antagonism. More sense that we are at war with them than it is worth it. Given the nature of Airline Travel. People are stopping everywhere. This ebola is not showing symptoms anywhere from two to 20 days. Just because something is difficult and maybe even risky doesnt mean that you dont do it. When you look at this screening potential, can you do it from a way, especially when a lot of these flights arent direct. Mr. Duncan came through brussels. Do you think it can be done . Do you think it should be done . What can be done and has to be done is a matter of common sense. Already, several african countries themselves have banned travel to and from the stricken areas. British airways and other airlines have already. Net and because of flights to the United States most are on connecting flights t. Screening has to be done for a couple reasons. One, cant them, its largely honor system. You check their passports, yes, there is a problem with fake identification. You into ed to identify where these people are from. Not necessarily so you can abandon them and take them back. No airline will take a sick passenger back. You need to be able to track them. The fact that african countries are doing the screening. The United States of america is not. Its a matter of common sense. The problem is, who is going to do it . The federal Aviation Administration does not have the ability the training or the legal power to do it. It will have to be through the Public Health system or the local health authority, which are really, its the sthats i states who govern the health and well being. Its too complicated. Its just too complicated. Lets be honest. This is too complicated. They cant get patting you down for a gun in the airports right now. Now theyre going to take on this sophisticated task . Lets lay that to the side. Thats just cynicism. Lets say they can get it done. 21 days you dont show symptoms. So what good is any type of screening that they can do at an airport . Well, any screening for sick people. Remember, not everyone is going to be feverfree. They are going to find some people who are ill. They have to find those for tracking them, for getting them care and also for tracking the people. You dont know why they have the fever . People get fevers, you dont know if its an ebillion la feve ebola fever, right . Thats right. People traveling at any given moment across the world. Screening is different than a total ban. We can increase screening in high risk fights a ban will have consequences in the nature this ebola is working, given the resources, it would have to be focused on Airline Travel in the hopes you find that one person that may come through as compared to other efforts, which include screening at our airports and screening abroad. In a world of limited options, a total ban would be one in which you are trying to get a needle out of a haystack as compared to other efforts. Mary, counterpoint. Well, a total ban is taking place through attrition already t. Travel to the area from other than aide workers and people providing assistance and medical care has dwindled down to nothing a. Total ban makes sense, at least for a short time, if you can not get the screening in place, its utterly ludicrous, so for the short term, it would make sense to get control of the situation. Julia, the vaccines. We are watching two things t. First is, where is the vaccine, why arent we bang on big pharma to produce the vaccine . We know they werent producing it simply because of supply and demand issues. No other answer is satisfying. Is that going on . Is that a part of it to force them to ramp it up or hopefully they volunteer . Right. This happened in h1n1 that there wasnt a vaccine. That was when demand was quite high. That virus was in mexico. It was coming across in tens of thousands of numbers. So you can ramp up very quickly. Look. Creating a vaccine is less a concern than distributeing the vaccine if there is actually an outbreak. That is quite complicated getth it to people and hospitals and Public Health facilities. Look. We have one case. There is sort of weighing the balance of other efforts to try to control ebola just comes into play. Theyll ramp up. I only say, we actually have two cases, right the nbc man and the man who came over. If one of them gets the vaccine, not the other. Then there is the overall, are you preparing in general . Thank you very much for the perspective this morning. Coming up, we will get the latest on the ebola fight from the man at the center of it. That is dr. Tom frieden, the chief of the centers for Disease Control and prevention. We will have dr. Anthony fauci with the National Institutes of health and general gary volesky. He is leading the fight. You cannot get better sources than these three men. Lets get a look at your headlines at ten minutes past the hour. They are begging isis for mercy in a heart wrenching video. Cnn is respecting the wishes to refer to him by his name. He was captured by isis last october. A service of reflection, meanwhile, for british atde worker alan henning was held in his hometown over the weekend. To hong kong, protesters still facing off with government officials after days of demonstrations in the center of the citys financial hub. Protesters ignored a deadline given by the government to leave the streets. Were going to bring you a live report from hong kong coming up later this hour, the hunt for Malaysia Airlines flight 370 under way in a desolate stretch of the indian ocean. Its hard to believe its been more than six months since the airliner vanished. The first of six ships. Theyll spend the next 12 days before heading to shore to refuel. We want you to tune in tomorrow night for a cnn special report vanished. The mystery of Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Vp joe biden apologizing to turkey after suggesting the allies are partly to blame for strengthening isis and other groups. He spoke to them by phone by saying he did not intend that the uae supported terrorists. Joe being joe, perhaps, then he did have to apologize. He says what others sometimes think through. Thats what makes him joe. Scary candor the director of the fbi revealing what he knows about fighters in syria and an imminent attack by the khorasan group. How soon could they strike . Financial noise financial noise financial noise when salesman alan ames books his room at laquinta. Com, he gets a ready for you alert the second his room is ready. So he knows exactly when he can check in and power up before his big meeting. And when alan gets all powered up, ya know what happens . I think the numbers speak for themselves. Im sold hes a selling machine put it there. And there, and there, and there. La quinta inns suites is ready for you, so youll be ready for business. The ready for you alert, only a laquinta. Com la quinta big day . Ah, the usual. Moved some new cars. Hauled a bunch of steel. Kept the supermarket shelves stocked. Made sure everyone got their latest gadgets. Whats up for the next shift . Ah, nothing much. Just keeping the lights on. laugh nice. Doing the big things that move an economy. See you tomorrow, mac. See you tomorrow, sam. Just another day at norfolk southern. How Many Americans are fightsing in syria on the side of the terrorists . In the area of a dozen or so. Do you know who they are . Yes. Each and every one of them. I think i do. I hesitate only because i dont know what i dont know. Showing words from fbi director, at least a dozen americans fighting with extremist groups in syria. Now there is fear they may be returning back to the u. S. Ready to attack. The managing editor, lets check in to find out what we do know. Bobby, great to see you. He says he believes there is a dozen fighters, how does he know they have joined the fight rather than say traveling through turkey . Well, this has been a threeyear conflict. You have to imagine every major intelligence outfit in the world has assets in the region. We know the turks do, the jordanians, british, french and presumably medical intelligence as well. You triangulate. You see who is traveling through that region. You go through the data. In some cases, these people are not afraid to announce themselves. You track the thousands upon thousands of youtube videos. You can see 3w4r50er7b8s. You can triangulate that information and get a good lead on some of the people. The fbi director said what is different tan chuck hagel said a month ago to cn in about how Many Americans we are aware of over 100 u. S. Citizens who is u. S. Passports who are fighting in the middle east with isil forces. There may be more we dont know. Okay. 100 u. S. Citizens there may be more versus a dozen. Which one is right . It may be disturbing. The most charitable account, hagel said he thought 100. Maybe they have done more careful analysis. The other possibility that there are 100 people who have gone to fight. Some are fighting with other groups. There are literally dozens of groups. Some islamists fighting in syria. So maybe the americans are there. The least charitable account is they dont know really at this late day, how Many Americans are fighting there. I assume when any of these americans come back through customs, their passports flash bright yesterday warnings. Does that solve the problem . First of all, you hope all of their passports flash. When that happens, you go inthe intelligence operations at home. The fbi and local Law Enforcement gets involved. You bring them in. You have a conversation. If there is a track record, if you know they have committed crimes, there are laws that fall into place. At the very least as they were indicating, they will be watched very closely, you know, presumably the nsa has the wiretaps in place, watching their phones, emails and every moment. You hope that. You hope that. The other fear is they dont come in through a conventional route and they are not showing their passports to anybody. They come through some other place na is unguarded on the board zbrer and they dont have to be americans. There are so many other people who have gone there. Many from European Countries with european passports. You hope that different intelligence actions are sharing the right kind of information. History suggests things slip through the cracks. We dont know of all of these people and the threat may not only come from americans. The second part is the defendant is not necessarily only in the homeland. There are targets around the world, americans, american institutions, ngos, companies, if you decide that you want to attack america, you dont have to come to america and thats a much grander scale of problem. We heard many reports about isis trying to recruit western women. Do we know anything about that . No there is more rumor and suspicion than hard fact on the ground. We know some women have gone and joined the fight. Whether they have gone for isis or more generally a fight against bashar assad, its unclear. Very quickly. What is the answer with the new information is we have . We know there are a dozen. More and more intelligence. We need more eyes allegheny county. They cant honestly be american eyes, but as i said at the top, there are other agencies that are operating there that needs to be better coordination. Great to see you. Thank you so much for joining us. We have breaking news now the american cameraman infected with ebola is back on u. S. Soil. When will he be given serum to save americans . Well explore that. Why hasnt the 3457b man expected in dallas received all those medications . We will get into all of that. woon. All right. We are watching breaking news, the fifth american diagnosed with ebola is back on u. S. Soil. The first ebola patient diagnosed in the u. S. He is fighting for his life in Critical Condition. The u. S. Government is considering rather increasing screening at airports. Also the department of defense plans to send more troops to liberia to help with infrastructure they sorely need. There is so much to discuss with our guest today. Analyst for cnn and a former military attache, the head of the Colombia UniversityNational Center for disaster preparedness. Gentleman, much to dig through. I think right away we have to think about this patient, Thomas Duncan, who is in a dallas hospital in Critical Condition. Give us an idea how they are treating him. Many are wondering why he isnt be given an experimental drug. There are no supplies left. Arent there others . How will they treat this man who is so, so sick . Unfortunately, because there is a shortage of medication, you are left with something experimental, absolutely not proven or providing state of the art supportive care. Which is what . Keeping somebody hydrated. Keeping the iv in. Keep the temperature down, et cetera. There is sim to matic treatment trying to support the bodys function. Ebola is a very serious disease. It attacks many different organs and leaves the patient in serious conditions. Is it complicated by the fact that he was so sick by the time he was hospitalized. He was sick. Knowing you are sick, this presents a serious medical challenge in the absence of specific medications that would wage address the ebola virus. Colonel. Lets talk about what you are hearing about the situation in newark over the weekend. Two patients potentially with showing symptoms. We will have that conversation with dr. Redlooner how that was handled. There are calls for increased screening. We know that africa is screening outgoing passengers, but the u. S. Is not. And people are saying, why arent we doing this . Its not so easy . One of your earlier guests says it creates whole system of problems, once you start the increased screening, slow things down. What are you screening for . Theyre not always symptomatic until you are very sick. So that creates a big problem. Are you of the mind we should stop flights in and out of there . I think thats the defense problem to go over there, so we dont have to deal with it here. But the reality is we know how many have been sick and died in liberia alone. Are troops going to help . Are u. S. Military troops, are they going to be of assistance . Absolutely. They bring a skill set. For one thing, we can build things and move a lot of the equipment there. You heard the Defense Department say, they will take everything with them. So right now the initial cadre is there. What is the requirement . The usa wants 1,700 beds added to the capably over there. The Defense Department can do that. If you look at reserve and National Guard units that do their annual training. They do it in africa. They build these kind of facilities. We are good at this. What about the american concern, you have military personnel oak, mill ter personnel will be arm. Its going to give the optics of looking like a mill taerp zone. Thats concerning, is it not. I looked at the deployment list of what they are sending. Civil engineering, theyre taking a whole Army Field Hospital there. They are setting that up. They are taking a military company. Thats to guard the airport. They will guard the facilities. Guard the troops. You will not see u. S. Armed soldiers enforcing the quarantine. We dont want that. The u. S. Military and other disasters around the world, where the u. S. Military has been deployed, it is really has enhanced the reputation and impacted the United States of america. If its done right, we have an opportunity to show what we can do and how to respond to a true humanitarian crisis. The other point about the military being there, in a certain sense, it helps replace parts of the infrastructure in these very poor african countries that simply dont have it. These other countries in africa, lets say nigeria, where they vbl able to contain the outbreak. Whats the key then . Very good enforcement of the contact management and all. That these other countries, sierra leone and guinea and liberia, those infrastructure almosts are not in place. They do need what the u. S. Military can provide. Liberia has seen the bulk of the fatalities. Lets talk about at newark, an incoming airplane quarantined because of two patients who got on the plane, not showing symptoms. One the man became sickened on board the plane. They isolated he and his daughter at the back of the plane until the cdc can come on board. It was quarantined and delayed, obviously, interesting to hear from the passengers on board, it seemed as they were making things up as they go. Is that u. S. Catching a headline or is there something to that . We cant he hears arehearse all these things. Someone comes from a western company, they get sick and have ebola until proven otherwise, the challenge is to go to specific policies and procedures that will apply to individual situations. We know what we are supposed to do. Who is supposed to do it. When are they supposed to do it. What category. How many rows back are they going to keep in the airplane. So there is lots of details. Those are details we have to get worked out as we go. You make a good point. Some of it you can plan for, some you cannot. Do you think we will see increased changes, guidelines, recommendations being made state side . A lot of this, there is no established protocols in place yet. They can catch up in a certain way . We are waik making it up. I go book to the military training, you work on a set of assumptions, when you are presented with something different, you have to adapt. Now thats what we are seeing we are adapting to this current situation. I think they need to figure out how they will exercise whatever protocols there are. What we dont want to see is the common sense mistakes being made. Like within they left mr. Duncans contacts in that apartment for nine days you dont feed a protocol to understand that that didnt make sense whatsoever. To the point is, the fact is remind people if someone is showing symptoms, there are a host of other illnesses, malaria, or something, we dont want to stigmatize people coming from west africa, gentleman, a really great conversation with y you. In our 8 00 hour, we will answer your questions and concerns. We know there are so many about ebola and you can send us those question, ebola q and a. We will talk to the man in charge of the cdc, dr. Thomas frieden about the possibility of screening and we will ask for an update on the persons currently treated in the United States. Stay with us. And when alan gets all powered up, ya know what happens . I think the numbers speak for themselves. Im sold hes a selling machine put it there. And there, and there, and there. La quinta inns suites is ready for you, so youll be ready for business. The ready for you alert, only a laquinta. Com la quinta inside a car designed to connect you to a world of possibilities. The connected car by volvo innovating for you. Big day . Hong kong officials and protesters remain at a standoff this morning. While the crowds are smaller, there are still a large number of protesters lining city streets. Pro democracy activists allowed city workers to enter officers that have been blocked. We have will ripley live in hong kong. Whats the latest situation . Reporter well, its monday evening here. Yes, the crowds are smaller. Over the weekend, we saw perhaps the biggest crowds yet. You can see this look of the place keeps evolving. This is a stairway now lined with postit notes. All of them with messages supportsed with the umbrella movement. There is art popping up, chris. There is a new, its turning on twitter umbrella man him an artist rolled this out over the weekend. All of these protesters have been using their cell phones to share information and share photos about whats hang here. The Hong Kong Government is facing a huge challenge, trying to figure out how to disperse these crowds. What you are looking at here is an onramp that should be a highway, that for more than a week will be filled with people. People are sleeping out here at night. Its causing financial problems and gridlock. Thank you for pointing it out. It does remind of that statue erected 25 years ago in Tiananmen Square. Of course, there are different situations, motivated by the same pro democracy sentiment. Will, that winds up bringing in the real factor here, the government in beijing. Yes, there are negotiations between the protesters and hong kongs government. But what is going on, on that level . Reporter sources very familiar with the hong kong and by a jenning leadership tell us this is very concerning. They are fearful that the images of this will spread to other chinese cities, perhaps people in Mainland China will feel inspired and start similar movements. Which could, of course, undermine the entire structure in china. We are also hearing from those same sources that the Chinese Government has instructed hong kong leadership to resolve this in a peaceful way. We are told they are essentially considering this as a long battle. They will wait it out to see if the crowds disperse. Keep in mind over the weekend, one week into this, tens of thousands fill the streets. Its not to say it couldnt happen again, chris. Will, thank you very much. We will be checking in with you. A u. Many of the professors say end of semester surveys, not the website, are the better barometerer of their work in the classroom. Oh, you got to have some tough skin to do that. We would be here a long time. Yeah, thats right. She knows what its like to be me. I will send her a couple mean ones. I dont get where social media created something where people can be more candid, give voice to people sore it just this form thats becoming more and more toxic. Its both. One feeds the other. Later today, president obama will discuss the latest efforts to contain ebola. This comes as the administration and cdc considers stepping up screening for the deadly virus at u. S. Airports. So how would that work and is there a chance they will ban travel to those affected countries . We have every angle covered for you this morning. So lets first bring in senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen. Whats the latest . Reporter the late set that the patient inside this hospital, Thomas Eric Duncan, is fighting for his life. In the meantime, officials here in dallas are trying to keep the disease from spreading. Officials are trying to keep it from coming to our shores once again. People are scared. Reporter this morning, cnn is learning officials are learning new screenings at airports to detect passengers arriving by the cdc itself. Lawmakers are calling to halt flights to america. We want to do everything to prevent this epidemic, this awful disease from coming further into the United States. Reporter a step the cdc says goes too far. If we make it harder, we increase our own risk. Reporter this as Thomas Eric Duncan arrived in the u. S. Advances have serious to critical t. Ebola patient fighting for his life after fighting almost a week ago in dallas. His family was relocated to an undisclosed location, quarantined until october 19th. The apartment where he was staying finally being sanitized. They had lived in the home for six days after he was diagnosed. Everything in there will be stripped out. Dcon from the carpet to all belongings. Reporter over the weekend, they found the last of the 48 people they they say may have come into contact with dallas, including this man that road in the same ambulance after duncan last tuesday. Lively escorted to the hospital in full surgical garb. A mask covering his face. All ten patients, mostly Health Care Workers have shown no symptoms. This as the fifth american arrives back in the u. S. From liberia. An nbc freelanceer told the providence newspaper he still has the fever but his spirits are very good. The freelance journalist will be the second patient treated in omaha. He will be treated away from the public and terminal areas. Screening passengers from ebola stricken countries coming into the u. S. May be a little more complicated than it sounds. People are using connection and coming into the u. S. From various points around the globe. A great point. We will be asking dr. Frieden about that shortly. Of course. Theyll be taking their direction from the white house. Lets start with the airport screenings. Is is that what the white house has at the top of the agenda. President obama does meet with his National Security team later today to talk with the efforts. One measure under consideration as you guys have been talking about is to have the cdc do screenings where travelers come in from africa. It may be tougher than it sound. They have been telling me they want to make sure any new screening is worth the disruption to travelers. There would be a disruption to travelers. We should mention which airports will have these additional screenings. They caution no final decision has been made. Top Health Officials in the Obama Administration remain confident an outbreak in the United States can be prevented. I was here last friday where this option of a travel ban came up. They have been imposing a travel ban. It may make sense to some people stopping the flights coming in. They dont want to make it tougher. A travel ban may actually do that. Chris. Thats an argument to be had, jim, i allow aide, humanitarian efforts in, youly. Travel to a certain degree. S the probably further afield right now. Have you heard talk about pushing big pharma to speed of development and the treatments, is there any pressure on that level . I think that is natural to hope that Something Like that could okumplt we heard from dr. Tony fauci from nih. He was over here and he gave optimistic news about an ebola vaccine. Its in the first stage of testing. They will have the final results in september and think they can occur in the first year speeding up the process might carry some risks. They are going through the normal process of getting that vaccine up and running. They are hoping by next spring they will have something to put into practice. Thank you very much. We are all over whats going on with ebola, obviously. There is a lot of news this morning. Lets get right to it. The ebola patient now fighting for his life. Dallas is fearful, but there is no fear in our eyes. We will be safe. People have a legitimate reason to be concerned. We have for the doubt that we will stop it in its tracks in texas. Nbc is reporting that its cameraman has now arrived on u. S. Soil. He said, dad, you need to answer the phone. I think im in trouble. The Ebola Outbreak could soon have an impact on airport security. There really is no way to limit peoples travel throughout that region of west africa. You are not facing just a Health Crisis. You are facing a National Security priority. Welcome back to new day. Breaking overnight, a fifth person infected be i the ebola virus, he is back on soil. He touched down in banger, maine, just hours ago after being airlifted out of liberia. He is expected to be arriving later this morning. In dallas, the prognosis not good for Thomas Eric Duncan. He has been downgraded to Critical Condition. Joining us now is cdc director dr. Thomas frieden. Thank you so much for being here. Good morning. Lets talk about what we have been talking about thus far, are you considering enhanced screenings at u. S. Airports for people travel income from ebola stricken countries . We are looking at all options to protect all americans. Thats our first priority. The first is to implement control measures in africa. Every person that leaves has their temperature monitored. The patient in dallas had a temperature of 97. 3. When he left. He didnt become ill for four days after he arrived. He had over 40,000 visitors from west africa, people returning, americans and others over the past six months. We will look hard at every opportunity and see what we can do to further increase the safety of americans. As you point out, the screening in his country did not work for mr. Duncan. It failed. Le failed to identify basht infectious ebola. He developed that four days after he landed in the u. S. One of the things we are doing is making shoo you are that people who have symptoms, doctors have this top of mind so that the moment someone comes in from any of these three countries with fever, theyre isolated and evaluated and tested. Yes. I understand you have removed 77 passengers already from planes who were trying to board but they were exhibiting some sort of symptoms. In that way i believe it is working. In terms of the advanced screening, once they arrive on u. S. Soil, isnt that a nobrainer . Why not institute that today . We need to look at what will be done, how it will be done . Looking at other options that would improve safety of americans here. We are opened to suggestions, to seeing what works and how to make it happen. As you know, there are a whole bunch of lawmakers calling to ban flights. They want flights out of these african nations stopped. We understand why you wouldnt ban them going in. Why not ban them returning to the u. S. . One of the schalgs, if we cant get assistance in. If we cant keep the airlines flying, it will be harder to stop the outbreaks there. Ill tell you what could happen very aiz easily, harder to get help in. The disease spreads within other parts of africa. In a few months, we are dealing with a big part of Africa Health wise economically and the threat of ebola that continues for months or years. Sure. We have to be sure we are focusing on stopping the outbreaks. Something we might do to protect americans might increase americans risk. Explain the difference between not stopping flights in, Everyone Needs medical supplies in liberia and other diseasetorn countries but stopping the flights with passengers out of those countries . Well, first off, most of the people leaving those countries have the right to leave. They are american sids, people traveling to other parts of the world and airlines arent going to fly one way. They have to have travelers in both directions if theyre going to keep flying. If you isolate these countries, the governments will get less stable. The ability to stop the outbreak there i think will be very problematic. You are going to the white house, you will be meeting with president obama today. What will you be recommending to him . We will be discuss wag we can do to follow up on the president s direction, to do Everything Possible to stop the outbreak and protect americans. Just about an hour ago, we had breaking news, that is the second american with ebola has now touched down on u. S. Soil. They refuelled in maine. He is headed to nebraska. What will the treatment be like that he receives at the Nebraska Medical Center. How will you make to mark sure its maintained there . The most important care is to manage their fluids and electrolytes, that they dont get dehydrated. That they dont go down or up to dangerous levels. That requires attention to detail and aggressive rehydration. In addition, we work with the hospital to make sure no Health Care Workers get exposed. Every Single Person who spotlight had on the tact with the index patient has been tracked. They have been monitored. None of them have fever. If they do, they will be isolated. Thats how we are sure to prevent ebola in this country. We hope for the recovery of all of the patients with ebola and recognize that its going to take time. We are seeing signs of progress. The cdc has trained over 4,000 health workers. We have many here in this country to deplo i to africa and help fight the outbreak. We are seeing people all over the world come and stop it. We are seeing Behavioral Changes we think are promising. So there is going to be a long, hard fight w. Remaking progress. I am encouraged by where we are. What is the status of that experimental serum, the zmap as its called . Zmap may work. Its a promising drug. There is no more of that. Right now we are looking closely at vaccines because there are a couple vaccines very promising. They are in clinical trials. We need to quickly physical out if they do work, if they do, get them into the field so that can be another tool to help stop the outbreak. We know now how to stop ebola. You make sure in africa burials are safe. Do those things, ebola goes away. Once people had it. The zmap seems to have been effective thus far and the people who have recovered from it. When will more doses be available. We dont know whether zmap works. A couple patients have been given it. There wont be much more of it for a long time. We know managing a patients fluids and electrolytes can double the likelihood they can survive. You sound as though u. S. Authorities have a handle on this. Americans are earn canned. What is your message to them this morning . I understand that ebola is scary. Its a deadly disease. But its not going to spread widely in the u. S. We can stop it at its tracks here. Cdc works 24 7 to protect americans. We need to stop it here, which we are doing, and keep americans safer at the source in west africa. Thank you so much for making time for us go thank you very much. Lets get to another man who is helping us figure out what to do in the United States when it co himself to ebola. Dr. Anthony fauci. He works with Infectious Diseases. Doctor, good to have you with us. People have concern not so much ebola will overtake the United States, how we are dealing with it is really where a lot of the course for concern comes. Let me ask you, we had dr. Thomas frieden on. We are hearing from members of the congress, we are hearing from the white house. Who is in charge the . Who is setting the policy for what happens here . Well, there are multiple agencies involved. If you look at on the ground in africa in u. S. Africa, usaid with their dark team, their disaster system Alert Response team are the ones that are there. We are here the department of Human Services doing the things, you heard from dr. Frieden a director of the cdc, which is a part of hhs. I direct the Infectious Disease institute. Which is a part of hhs. Its a multifacetted response coordinated at the level of the white house. That can help or hurt in different situations as we learned with different types of disasters. So let me ask you specifically, who is going after big pharma to push them on the vaccines, to push them on making more zmap. Who is doing that . Well, there are two separate questions. With regard to the vaccines, its not a big question of big pharma. We have a few, one has gone into humans, vaccines, we are testing here at the nih. As dr. Frieden correctly said. We are are in the baiz phase 1 testing. We will be with that at the beginning of november and december, we will go into the decision into going into a larger trial in west africa, first to find out if it works. Who is we . We being the nih. The nih. My group here at the National Institutes of health. Its testing it right now. Would you benefit from the help of the private industry. Im asking because most of it doesnt happen on the government side. It happened on the governments side. Forcing them to be involved. We are involved. We have a full cooperation with glaxo smithkline. This is a vaccine we did the fundamental science on. They are closely involved with us, manufacturing it. When we prove that it works, they will be manufacturing it at a high levels to make it available. You have to prove it works first before you make tens of millions of doses. So there is not a problem with the vaccine visavis the organization. We have a strong collaboration with cline. We heard the dr. Frieden say there is not zmap left. There is none to give the nbc cameraman or the man in dallas . Right now. There is no za zmap. For sure. Seven people received it. Two of which dr. Brantley and miss writeboll. They are all out of doses. The federal government, hhs, in part, due to the baudeer. The biomed cal advanced research. They are helping the company to get the resources to scale up the manufacture. Theyre right now manufacturing additional lots. It probably wont be ready for a monthandahalf, two months. There are other experimental trucks in the true experimental stage. Availability will take some time. Again, its not a question of manufacturing it. Its a question of proving it works. These are right now in the experimental stage to determine, if, in fact, they work. We are throwing around the term screening right now. It sounds good. But it seems very difficult to put into practice especially given the 21day lack time. Do you think its even practical to screen . Would that make a difference . Well, first of all, there is clear cut screening going on the exit end. If you and i went to an airport in monrovia, liberia and tried to get on the plane and had a fever or were sick. We would not be allowed on the plane. The discussion under way right now and all options will be looked at is what kind of screening do you do on the entry end . Namely, when people coming here right now. Thats something on the table now and the discussion is is that extra added layer of screening going to be worth the resources put into doing it . That hasnt been decided right now. Its the 21 days that winds up throwing a wrench into things. You dont know where somebody is until its too late. Thats why people are saying, should you be more cautious with what types of travel restrictions you allow in general . No, see, people are getting confusedant 21 days. 21 days from the time you get exposed to a person, so how do you know a person was exposed and at what time . Are you trying to say you want to keep them there for 21 days and make sure they get exposed to nobody. Then let them on the plane . That would be absolutely impossible. I think people are a little confused about that 21day incubation period. What you do when someone comes to the airport. You dont want them to get on a plane, first of all, you certainly dont want them to get on the theyre infected. Few get on the plane, you want to make sure theyre not on the plane at a time when they can transmit it. Thats what it is when you do the temperature because if you take a temperature and someone is sick. Only when someone has symptoms can they transmit the virus. If they dont have symptoms, they cant transmit it. Thats what the exit screening is all about. Thats the concern, somebody can go there, be tested. Not have a fever, a week, two weeks later they can become sick and people who come in contact with them become sick. Thats why there is a push to restrict travel. You guy versus to get on the m same page then well see where we take policy from there. As you know, many questions. We like to have dr. Fauci and dr. Frieden. We like to have them on. Because there are lot of questions. Please, keep sending your questions. You are doing a great job. We can take as many as you have. Use twitter. Use the ebolaxanda. Parents are begging for mercy. He was airlifted out of liberia. Meanwhile, the man with the first case of ebola diagnosed here is doing worse. Thomas eric duncan has been downgraded to Critical Condition. Lets bring in nancy lindbergh, she is leading the response in west africa, she has returned on friday. Nancy, great to have you with us. Tell us what you saw, what the situation was like on the ground in liberia. Thanks, allsyn. We are seeing a nation gripped with a virus that has jumped borders into its capital city. The United States has mobilized in response, but you are seeing a country that is changening rapidly. Nobody shakes hand. Everywhere you go you have to wash your hands in a chlorine collusion and they take your temperature. Every 15 days, as of the latest count there were 3,488 n. Two weeks there will be 7,000 t. Cdc says by january they believe there could be 1. 4 million cases. What can stop this galloping epidemic . Yes, those numbers are predicated on no response at all, with i is exactly why the United States has mobilized so that we can stop ebola in west africa. We have been working in august on an act sell rated footing with a Response Team centers for Disease Control and other parts of the u. S. Government. We saw we needed to more rapidly scale our response, which is why president obama several weeks ago announced the u. S. Military will be joining the effort. Really, it requires creating the kind of facilities that can take infected patients out of their homes to the isolated ebola treatment units as well as Community Care centers so that people have options for bringing people out of their homes. This is exactly on what we are working on building along with air lifting in critical supplies, Health Care Workers wearing, body backs, chlorine, all the essential supplies critical for a successful response. I want to talk to you about those critical supplies. It talksed about this shipping container filled with all sorts of necessary supplies, gowns, stretchers, linens, face masks, protective suits, sitting on a dock unopened ifcyer are leone. What is the problem . Why arent these supplies getting to the necessary places . Well im sure now that has been identified, the government of sierraly own will quickly act to release the supplies. One of the challenges is the reason that ebola has been so virulent in these countries is that they are recently emerging from decades of conflict. So they dont have the symptoms, the organization that helps them respond in the most effective ways possible. One of the things the United States government is seeking to do is help them create a more effective Crisis Response system. That includes things like being able to quickly clear those kind of vital supplies through customs. One last thing, nancy, we understand that burial practices in liberia have contributed to the spread of ebola. Are those changing . Absolutely. We have supported 50 burial teams just in liberia. These teams go all across the country, collecting bodies, insuring there is a safe and dignified burial. Traditionally, liberians would wash the bodies of their dead ones. There is one of the most critical ways you can spread the disease. We are seeing behaviors are shifting. We have provided the ways to have alternative burials. Nancy, thanks for all your great work. Thanks, for all the important information. Great to talk to you. Thank you very much. Meanwhile, what did a republican New Hampshire congressional candidate do that made spikeer john boehner so mad that he cut off funds for her campaign . John king will tell us inside politics. Lucky for me, i will segue away from the balloon. I will leave it out there on the water. Happy monday. Let go inside politics. 29 days until election day, one of the president s former aides with me said he made a mistake. Lets listen to david axelrod. He ran the campaign. The president last week in a speech about the economy said, no, im not on the ballot. But my policies are. Make no mistake about it. David axelrod says, give it a rewrite. David axelrod, you are not writing his speeches in there. No, i would not. Understand, the context of the line was the things he is pushing forward minimum wage, pay equity, infrastructure. He said these are on the ballot. But the way, it was obviously when you saw the speech that that was not the way. You are an ad man. It was a mistake. It was a mistake. I guess youd have to agree with him if you see how quickly republicans acted. Theyre saying the president nationalized the election. The president made it about him. There is no uniting factor getting people to the polls except for the fact that people dont like obama. Obama says im on the ballot. My proposal is on the ballot. Its not good in the tough races. Hes the president of the United States the leader of the democratic party. I guess its a truth you are not supposed to speak . David axelrod is right in the context of the speech, here are all the things im pushing for. Thats a nice set to dance on. When you say im not on the ballot but my policies are. Basically, everybody that got the speech ahead of time, a lot of us zeroed in on that segment immediately saying, hmm, i wonder how that will work out for these guys. It took the republicans a couple hours. Are you seeing those ads right now. We will see how they play out. One of the most fascinating races we have. This could determine the United States senate. The republicans need a net of six seats and they would control the United States senate. Look at the poll out yesterday. That guy pat roberts, hes ten points behind greg orman who is an independent. There is a libertarian candidate. Greg orman with 48 . Kansas, if the republicans lose kansas, that could mess up their entire senate map. Pat rollins is losing independents, they have a real problem there. He has a big gap to make up. I was hoping jackie would work in the hot air balloon analogy in that segment. You know, the rest of the gop is not prepared to say yet to pat roberts. They are upset with the way he has ran this campaign from the start and the people in d. C. Realized how it was off the rails. They were trying to tie orman to obama in kansas as well t. Question, they got other structural issues, can they get the intensity to turn out the votes . That tells you, this is a querky year. A few years ago, john boehner went up to New Hampshire to raise some money for a state senator in New Hampshire. Shes in a tough race, a competitive race. Marilinda garcia. She is a tea party favorite. She did a Radio Program and she was asked, are you going to support john boehner for speaker . Heres what she said. Ive had ted cruz and john boehner come to support me. Look, i appreciate beth both of them. I am seeking to represent the Second District and respond to their concerns, education and thats what im about. Morrow promises, she said there. She was asked no promises. She didnt wage asked if she would support john boehner. I am told there was some grumbleing. They were told there may be no money coming from the National Republican party. After he aired that segment yesterday, her Campaign Manager reached out and said, no, no, no, she didnt answer the question there. She fully intends to support the speak speaker. They need the money by the democratic incumbent in that race. I think this shows john boehner has gotten his run back. He would have never done this laid down the law a couple years ago. Now it feels like he can. We will watch that race. Republicans hope to make gains in the northeast. One calculation is why lose it to her. Hardball politics one to watch. Maybe being joe biden means you do have to say sorry t. Vice president was up at harvard. He said some things that were honest about turkey, about the United Arab Emirates and arab allies and their support tore rebels inside syria or the case of turkey, about having a pourous border. Listen to the Vice President here. Hes up at harvard, laying the blame in harvard. What do they do . Theyve poured hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of tons of weapons into anyone who would fight against assad, except the people who were being supplied and the extremist elements of jihadis coming from other parts of the world. So help me here did the mr. President say anything factually incorrect . He said something you hear from american officials all the time, which is to say the saudis and other gulf countries powered, in fact, millions of dollars and a lot of weapons into the syrian conflicts. A lot of the weapons ended up in the hands of the jihadis the real extremists. He is saying out loud what a lot of other people are thinking. So he had to apoll. Charles iz to the leader of turkey, one or two opollings yet to come. Again, what he said is not inaccurate, is it . I its also, you know, it is also at a critical time. Just not diplomatic . Turkey had just voted to go after terrorists, before it had a tacit approval of this. So the timing wasnt great either. He made one big mistake. He quoted another world leader. He said the turkish president told them we didnt do enough to seal the border. Any time you speak up and you report a private conversation like that, you will get a little fire. That was the same event the Vice President of the student body spoke to the president and he said something about being a Vice President , its a b bitch. Sometimes you cant speak the truth. Thomas eric duncan remains in Critical Condition. Several relatives are under the cdc quarantine. The czc insists its very low. Officials have used that to justify not instituting travel bands or harsh restrictions. But is that the right move . Lets bring in tom sex, Thomas Eric Duncan is being treated in his district. Good morning. Chris. What do we know about the hospital involved . In your own back yard thats where the problem started. The hospital seemed to move back from accountability. It said we screwed up. We should have done it. Then they said it was a software glitch. We have as to make sure people own their protocols, the responsibility is taken seriously. What is your take on how the hospital is handling it . Well, first of all, Presbyterian Hospital in dallas is one of the finest and most reputable hospitals, i think not only in dallas but in the country. In fact, there was someone dropping the ball, whether it was protocol or having inattention to what happened. There was a mistake. I think first of all, they were forthright about. That now the question is, how are we handling the circumstance here in dallas and i think by and large what i see in my perspective. I attended the briefing. Just as you were alluding to, chris the cdc takes this as an academic or statistical exercise saying terms like 100 chance or things are all safe as opposed to trying to gather what i believe should be the publics attention on this and focusing where we should go and how we should get there. If we have an outbreak of measles or influence or flu, it is not uncommon for people to ask children stay at home. We try to quarantine people. This is scary to Many Americans. I think the government should we spond in kind. First of all, i think the cdc should have a more robust understanding of how to understand this up to and including if you had to clean out the apartment, could you transfer or transmit those items down the street . I know that requires a different permit. These are things the cdc should be doing. Right. It gets complicated. You have the local authorities the state authorities, will you have like five different federal agencies involved. We know what happens in government the more chefs you have the worse the soup will taste. Right. What do you believe is at play right now . I believe what is at play the Dallas County is working wage with the cdc. Once again, it may be complex. Lets play two people and be able to answer questionsant what specifically we are asking them to do . I believe one of the biggest problems that will occur is as more and more people come to america for america to be compassionate and helping americans and others, there will be questions about containing this ebola problem if we do it well and know what we are talking about. There are two things, one, how the family of mr. Duncan has been treated suboptimal to say the least. You have people flying on special airplanes and them stuck in an apartment. They didnt know about the dirty sheets and towels until an interview with anderson cooper. That has to be addressed. On the opposite end of the scale, you have something you take seriously. Travel restrictions, they dont want to talk about them as something that could to be helpful. What is your thought on that . The thought is i asked the director of the cdc his opinion. I believe its important. He referred me to an article to two weeks previously in the financial times. I asked him to please reevaluate what had been an am deckic was a reality. What is secret, is that we treat this in the circumstance where we stop travel in the United States not just from there, but also understanding the african travel goes from europe and other places. This is a reasonable precaution that the American People would expect us to do as elected people and servants of the people. You asked the cdc dr. Tom frieden for his opinion. He gave you an article . That was his response to you . In fact, thats correct. Im sure that didnt make you too satisfied. What it did, it made me ask him to reevaluate that process. The American Public need to know this is being handled correctly. Dallas can get that done. We are behind the curve. We need to get that done quickly. Dr. Sessions, we will check in with you again. Police believe Jesse Matthew was the last person with hannah before she vanished from a mall september 13th. Arrested and charged with abduction with intent to defile, matthew sits behind bars. Dna evidence also ties him to the 2009 disappearance of a different woman, 20yearold morgan harrington. No charges have been filed in that case. The attorney representing Jesse Matthew did not return cnn calls for comment. The Virginia Tech students body was found ten miles from where she was last seen. John has said this is every parents worst night haimare. Its also a nightmare for james, hannahs grandparents as well as all her many friends here in charlottesville and beyond. The grahams are hoping someone will come forward with information and claim the 100,000 reward leading to hannahs safe return. Help us bring hannah home. Thank you. Question is will that stop the disease or just spread more panic . Can it be stopped at the source in africa . Were going to talk live to the u. S. General heading u. S. Efforts to contain the disease. And breaking overnight, nbc camera man affected with ebola back on u. S. Soil, said to be treated in nebraska. Why wasnt the man given u. S. Drugs that saved the others treated in the u. S. The terror alert. Speaking out on how dangerous isis is on the homeland. Can they track them all . Your new day continues right now. This is new day with chris cuomo, kate bolden and michaela. Good morning everyone. Welcome to new day. Its 8 00 in the east. Im allsny. Great to be with you. 33yearold is the fifth american to be transported to the u. S. His jet touching down in maine for refuelling overnight and now on its way to nebraska. The progress noesz lonosis look duncan. He clings to life in a dallas hospital. All the doses that experimental treatment are gone. Were learning the United States is considering beefing up screenings at major airports to prevent a domestic Ebola Outbreak. Our coverage of this Health Crisis begins with Elizabeth Cohen in dallas. Thanks for being with us. Thats the latest there . Reporter Thomas Duncan is in Critical Condition. As he fights for life inside the dallas hospital, officials are trying to keep the disease from spreading in dallas and keep it from coming to our shores once again. People are scared. Cnn has learned u. S. Officials are considering new screenings at airports to detect passengers arriving from the cdc itself. Why not do everything we can to prevent this awful epidemic, awful disease from coming furtherer in the United States . A step the cdc says goes too far. If we make it harder to fight 26 outbreak in west africa, we increase our own risk. Duncan arrived in the u. S. After contracting the virus. He is fighting for his life. On friday, duncans family was relocated to an undisclosed location, quarantined. Their apartment is finally being sanitized. They lived in the home six days after he was diagnosed. Anything in there, it will be completely stripped from carpet to curtains. 48 people may have come in contact with duncan in dallas after a day long man hunt including this man michael lively who rode in the same ambulance after duncan last tuesday. Lively escorted to the hospital in full surgical garb, a mask covering his efface. All ten high risk patients hostly Health Care Workers have slo shown no symptoms. The fifth american arrives back in the u. S. From liberia this morning. The father of the nbc freelancer told the Journal Newspaper he still has the fever, but his spirits are very good. The freelance journalist will be the second treated at the Nebraska Medical Center in omaha. Hell be transported away from the terminal and public airports. Early early on new day, dr. Thomas friedman head of cdc said theyre trying to come up with a plan. Its not clear why months into the outbreak theyre trying to figure out what to do. Its very complicated. Thanks for the update. Thomas eric duncan is in a very difficult fight to stay alive in a dallas hospital n. His homeland of liberia, the outbreak is spiraling out of control. Lets go live. Retrace duncans steps visiting his home and closest friends. This is important to do. Its all about contact. What did we discover . Reporter absolutely chris. Its all about tracing that broader contact. Thomas do Thomas Duncan is a piece of the puzzle. Its almost an outbreak among the outbreak. We spoke to the teenage ebola victim who passed from the virus that duncan is believed to have contracted ebola from. She told us nobody knew she had ebola including duncan. He got on that plane to the u. S. Not knowing that she had died from ebola. Nor did any of the hundred or so other people that have been confirmed to have either touched her body or come in contact with williams while she was alive. This is becoming an outbreak within the outbreak. Nine people in addition to Thomas Eric Duncan dead or dying after coming in contact with williams. Its absolutely heartbreaking. The head of cdc has been saying all along until the outbreak is contained, nowhere around the world in the u. S. Or across africa will be safe from this. An important point to keep making because especially in the u. S. People are concerned with where they 4rilive. We have to look at the true source and keep reporting. The commanding general of the 101st air Born Division is leading the joint forces command in liberia. Thanks for being with us. We know youre exclusively with us this morning. Thanks for taking the time. Thanks for having me. Okay. You will be deploying two weeks with 700 troops we understand. What are you doing today to prepare . All of our soldiers that are going to deploy are in the process of conducting deliberate predeployment training to prepare ourselves for the environment were going into in liberi liberia. There are 34558 infected people at last count in liberia. Cdc says that number doubles every 15 to 20 days meaning by the time you get there there will be 7,000 infected people with ebola. Is there anything to do in the next two weeks to try to contain this . Well, i would tell you what were doing to prepare ourselves to support the lead federal agency thats u. S. Aid. Were looking at medical providers that are going to go train Health Care Providers in liberia to address that situation. Were going to deploy unique treatments to help liberia contain the virus. Additionally were training soldiers to make sure theyre protected or have the knowledge they need to protect themselves from becoming infected. Thats what were doing here at 101st. Admiral john kirby of the pentagon says he doesnt expect your troops or any other troops, maybe 3,000 or 4,000 in west africa, doesnt expect them to be around sick patients. How will you avoid being around sick patients . Again, were supporting the lead federal agency u. S. Aid. As you know, theres a large number of other people also supporting that effort. As we go build ebola treatment units and train Health Care Providers, were facilitating that through other partners there. I dont expect that soldiers will be in those vicinities where there are infected people infected with ebola. He also said admiral that you wont be working in high risk areas. Explain how you differentiate between low risk and high risk area at this point. Well again, the ebola treatment units well be building, we have to take those and build from the ground up. There arent going to be patients there. Well turn those facilities over to people that will run them once con struck constructed. Well take the appropriate measures to make sure weve protected ourselves as well as continue to support the u. S. Aid led effort. Again, our soldiers are going through some pretty intense training here. We got professionals coming to tell us about ebola so soldiers can recognize the symptoms and take actions to prevent themselves from acquiring this disease. In other words, theyll be trained to take their temperature several times a day. Beyond that, whats the training . Well, to recognize the symptoms. And again, there are leaders as well out there making sure soldiers are adhering to those and not taking actions that could cause them to acquire the disease. We arent going to be out there with patients themselves. Were not treating people that are infected. Our mission is to build ebola treatment units to help the government get folks treatment that they need and to train Health Care Providers that well be getting after the training for them. General, there was a disturbing article in the New York Times about the shipping container that is sitting in a dock at sierra leon. It has in it protective gloves, gowns, stretchers, linens, protective suits, a whole array of medical supplies needed in west africa. Its sitting on the dock because the countrys governments arent able to get this the way the u. S. Can. Will you be involved in those efforts to get needed supplies to people . We bring unique capabilities as you know that we will support u. S. Aid in their efforts to really address the wholistic piece containing this virus. As you know the infrastructure in some areas is limited. Well work with u. S. Aid to get those necessary supplies where they need to go. Again, we bring capabilities. Were not the lead federal agency as you know, like we have been in previous operationopera. Well do what we can to support u. S. Aid and get whatever they need where they need it. We know youll do your duty as you always do. Best of luck general. Thanks for taking time for us. Thank you. Lets go to michaela who has the headlines. I sure do. Thanks. Stunning words from the head of the fbi. Were going to bring you them after the break. Hopefully yall will still be here. I doubt it. M is ready. Yes. Each and every one of them . In that dozen or so i do. I hesitate because i dont know what i dont know. Maybe thats the most important part of the quote from fbi director james comey on 60 minutes. He goes ton say he cant keep those dozen out of the country if they have valid passports. The best he can do is monitor them. Isis threatens another muslim, soldier. In a letter to his parents he writes, quote, im pretty scared to die. We bring the in Counter Terrorism official. Lets start with news. Thanks for being on new day as always. The head of the fbi does say i dont know what i dont know. Hes saying a dozen. The secretary of defense chuck hagel tells cnn its probably about 100. Which is it . How many from the u. S. Are fighting for isis or do we just not know . I suspect we dont know. Youve got to look at cutting the numbers a few ways. One is the number of people we can confirm are in the fight. The second number might be the number of people that might have gone over. We dont know if theyre involved in humanitarian pla operations. I suspect 12 is an accurate number. Thats a pretty high number. I want you to explain why we should give confidence that agencies are working together. What does that mean about the field . I wouldnt worry about whats going on in the field. You sit down every morning, get a consolidated picture across agencies of whos gone, which americans are off in the fight. When those kids come back home, fbi working with local and state police to follow them around. Despite the organization in terms of differing numbers, what i saw is the coordination especially after 9 11 because we had so much activity. That forces operation in the field. Isis is not new. Its been in your world many years, in the media many years. Beheadings changed things no question it ramped up media urgency. You take the beheading, obviously unmitigated tragedy, you take them differently many context and think we shouldnt get so worked up seeing them as the pivot point. Why . I think obviously its a tragedy for families. The if you look at the history of the jihadi movements, groups that grow too extreme over the course of time and im talking over five years, ten years, 20 years. Over the course of time, extremism in groups limits ability to recruit within populations. See how many syrian kurds are leaving. See kurds in iraq fighting isis. Over time, i suspect the tribes will say were intimidated by isis but not going to take this anymore. Thats why theres differences between al qaeda guys of yesterday and isis of today. Al qaeda of yesterday say weve seen this movie. It doesnt work. As horrible as they are, you look at them as also a signal the group may have gone too far. Hopefully is hurts them and shows as a sign of weakness. That would be good. It leads to another perception problem as the beheadings create aid sense of urgency. Theres also puerception of islam. Give us clarity of what you understand on who the threat is and why. Were looking at a group that has maybe 20, 30,000 people. Theres 1. 6 billion people who are muslims around the world. Ive lived in the muslim world. Its a faith that talks about peace and treated me well when out there. Im a Counter Terrorism analyst. Youre fautalking about a slith bearable measurable talking about 1. 6 billion people. The fight is do we want to return to an era 13 centuries that was pure era in islam or modernize . These guys are antimodernists. They want to return to the past. I dont think theyll be accepted long term. Your message is dont blame the faith, blame perversion, more importantly the people perverting the thing. Sure. If you look at the attitudes this is from polling data. Attitudes in places like north africa, jordan, turkey et cetera. The views of isis are wholly negative. Youre talking about a small number of typically youth going there to fight. Im not saying there havent half a percent, one tenth percent interested in this. The overwhelming population, people that dont appear on the news, number one dont agree with beheadings and number two dont agree with isis. Theyre terrified by them. Were two to three weeks into bombing and people are asking, what, isis still exists . Havent we won this war yet . What do you say . This country has incredible attention deficit. The average life span what did you say . This country has dont mess with me chris. The average life span is about ten years give or take. This is looking at dozens over time other. Religious based insurgencies tend to last longer. People inspired by religion never go home as opposed to those inspired by ethnic did differences. Were a few weeks into this. Isis is a few years old. Roots go back a decade or more. If you go by averages, were looking pat a decade or so. Dont ask why we havent made progress in ten days. I was reading this weekend that said as long as you have same socioeconomic conditions in these places where you have extremists and political exclusion, youll have this. Youve been making that point well every opportunity you get on cnn. Thank you for joining us as always. I got you good on that about the add. Thats got to sting. Thats got to sting. That hurt. That hurt. I will retaliate. Youre not the guy to get in this fight with. I dont know what i was thinking. The other big story of the day is ebola. According to the cdc theres no danger of large scale outbreak. Is that true . Wheres the confidence in that come from . Youll hear from the cdc chief ahead. A breaking point in hong kong. How long will protestors continue there . The threat of violence is getting ever closer. Were live on the ground with the latest. Stay with us. Its a fresh approach on education superintendent of public instruction Tom Torlaksons blueprint for great schools. And torlaksons plan calls for more parental involvement. Spending decisions about our education dollars should be made by parents and teachers, not by politicians. Tell Tom Torlakson tkeep fighting for a plan that invests in our public schools. We have breaking news this morning. The the nbc camera man that contracted ebola in liberia is back in the United States. Hes on his way to get emergency treatment in nebraska. Later today, barack obama will meet with the director of cdc. This comes as the administration and cdc are considering stepping up screening for the virus at u. S. Airports. I asked director thomas fried enaboen about that. Are you considering enhanced security . Were looking at all options to protect americans. Thats our number one priority. The first thing we did was to implement control measures in west africa. Every person that leaves has their temperature monitored. Person in dallas has temperature of 97. 3 when he left. He didnt become ill for four days after he arrived. Weve had 40,000 visitors from west africa or people returning from west africa, americans and others over the past six months. As you pointed out screening in his country did not work for mr. Duncan. It failed. His temperature hadnt spiked yet. He failed to identify ebola. He develop had the a four days after he landed in the u. S. As you know, theres a bunch of lawmakers who are calling to ban flights. They want flights out of these african nations stopped. We understand why you wouldnt ban flights going in. They need supplies obviously. Why not ban them returning to the u. S. . One of the challenges is if we cant get assistance in and cant keep the airlines flying, it will be harder to stop the outbreaks there. Ill tell you what could happen easily if we isolate countries. Harder to get help in. Disease spreads in these countries to other parts of africa. Within a few months were dealing with outbreaks in many parts of africa. A big Problem Health wise economically and a threat that continues months and years that we have to deal with. We have to insure were focussing on stopping outbreaks. Theres something we might do out of best of intentions to protect americans might increase americans risk. Explain what the difference is between not stopping flights in. Everyone needs medical supplies in liberia and disease torn countries but stopping flights with passengers out of those countries . First off, most people leaving the countries have a right to leave. Theyre american citizens with dual citizenships traveling to other parts of the world. Airlines arent going to fly one way. Theyre going to have travel t in both directions if theyre going to keep flying. The ability to stop the outbreak there will be problematic. Youre going to the white house meeting with president obama today. What will you recommend to him . Were going to be discussing what we can do to follow up on the president s direction to do Everything Possible to protect americans and stop the outbreak. Dr. Frieden. Whats the status of that experimental serum thats shown effectiveness, zmapp. It may work. There is as i understand no more of it. Now were looking closely at vaccines. There are a couple that are promising in clinical trials. We dont know if they work. We need to quickly figure out if they do work and if they do, get them in the field so that will be another tool to stop the outbreak. We know how to stop ebola. Isolate patients, track contact, and make sure in africa that burials are safe. Do those things. Ebola goes away. You sound optimistic as though you believe u. S. Authorities have a handle on this. As you know, americans are concerned. What is your message to them this morning . I understand that ebola is scary. Its a deadly disease. Its not going to spread widely in the u. S. We can stop it in its tracks here. Cdc works 24 7 to protect americans. We need to both stop it here which were doing and keep americans safer by stopping it at source in west africa. Dr. Thomas frieden, thank you. Thank you very much. We have a breaking update. The nbc camera man that became infected with ebola has just arrived in omaha, nebraska. Youre looking at the plane that brought him there. He will be treated at Nebraska Medical Center, same hospital that treated another american infected with ebola, dr. Rick sacra. He was diagnosed last week in liberia. His plane arrived in maine first this morning to refuel and now it is at its destination at the hospital where he will be getting best american treatment for ebola. We know that all of you have questions about ebola. Were asking for your question this is morning. Well take them to our panel of experts next. For instance, would airport screenings even work . Theres confidence. Then theres trusting your vehicle maintenance to ford service confidence. Our expertise, technology, and high quality parts means your peace of mind. Its no wonder last year we sold over three million tires. And during the big tire event, get up to 140 in mailin rebates on four select tires. All right. Were watching breaking news. The u. S. Camera man from nbc infected with ebola in africa has just landed in omaha, nebraska theb where have hes going to receive treatment at a Nebraska Medical Center. That young mans name is ashoka mukpo. He became infected in liberia and diagnosed last week. He understand he was taken from the plane in a hazmat suit one were accustomed to seeing in ebola cases. He was put in the waiting ambulance there and will be transported to the nebraska heads where hes said to be receiving treatment likely similar to what we saw dr. Rick sacra, american physician who contracted ebola and west africa while doing work there in a medical center. Likely he will receive the same type of treatment. We just watched that happen moments ago. This is a live picture from omaha, nebraska. In the meantime, Thomas Eric Duncan is fighting for his life in Critical Condition in dallas. Dozens that had contact with him are being closely watched. We certainly know you have a lot of questions and concerns. We asked many for your questions. We have a team to help answer those. We have Elizabeth Cohen and arthur director of medical ethics. And rounding out the trio, retired military analyst. I think what we should do is start with you elizabeth. We have information on officials ramping up screenings at airports after learning about the reports of blunders and poor handling of potential ebola patients. Talk us through that. Right michaela. Weve been talking on your show a week now how when my crew and i returned to atlanta, there was basically no screening at all. This surprised us because customs and Border Patrol knew we had been covering ebola. They didnt ask us question. Were hearing now u. S. Authorities are thinking of ramping up screening, making it more stringent. I thought it was interesting Thomas Frieden was on your show a while ago and said were considering all possibilities to make a game plan. I dont know why its taken this long to come up with a plan. Ebola has been out there months now. Thats the point elizabeth. You and i had a conversation offline. Screening is difficult, testing is difficult when you throw in the airport components. I was asking you about the testing. Its infuriating to me if its in my body, unless im showing symptoms, it cant be detected. Help me get my brain around that. Its a hard one. Its not the way it usually works. If you have ebola, infected with it but not yet sick, the test is going to be negative. The test will only be positive if youre actively ill. Lets say Thomas Duncan had been tested on his way out of liberia or into the u. S. , he would have been negative because he wasnt yet sick. Its a deficiency of the test. We need a better test. Yes. I want you to take a listen to sound we have from the partner of Thomas Duncan, patient in dallas. Louise spoke to anderson cooper. Take a listen. Well get you to reaction. From critical to worse. I really want to go on air to ask American Government to please help me. I want them to save his life. You hear her concerns. She wants his life to be saved. Wants the government to step in. We know there are no more zmapp supplies. Are there other experimental drugs they could use . How do they decide who gets them and who doesnt . To use the small amount of experimental drug thats out there for therapy, you usually need a refrigerator. You have to transit that stuff. You have to have clean water to give it. Thats why you tend to see Doctors First rather than the average person in sierra leone. You want to monitor people after they get it to see a if they get better. Part of the challenge here, was it that it wasnt caught soon enough . I suspect thats right. Elizabeth started to say we have a test that tests ebola. Youve got to build up a ton of virus before it detects. A better test is just as important in terms of priority. I think well get that before we get a therapy or vaccine out there. A better test. It takes so long to make. You have a vaccine. Lets say it works. Youve got to build a factory. Got to build a lot of it. Its going to take forever. We should increase calls for that. I have a great question in a second spider. Why not give him blood from the ebola survivor . Could he benefit from that kind of trans fusion . Its unknown if he would benefit. None of this has been studied. Youre giving it, crossing your fingers hoping it helps and doesnt hurt. We have heard of other patients getting a blood trance fusion and other patients getting another experimental medication. It sounds like duncan is not getting either of those. Its not clear why. These decisions get made patient by patient. Spider, youre up. This is a question weve been asked. People want to know why havent we banned flights to or from infected nations in africa . Why arent they closing our borders . Not easy is it. No, not at all. Under the best conditions we have Incredible Mission statement to control our borders. Theyre extremely or russ. That becomes extremely difficult to enforce under the best of conditions we have. In terms of flights, clearly as indicated, im not the doctor in this discussion. As has been indicated, the tests dont exists that would make those effective in terms of what type of virus might get to our shores. Thats the primary concern i would have. The fact michaela that the 101st is now implementing a solution and will be deploying here in a couple of weeks is a good sign. That gets to the potential isolation of the disease at its source. Thats the good news. Quick final thought from you general marks. We know that right now we have to take people at their word, passengers coming in. We know that Thomas Duncan did not tell authorities that he had been in the presence of somebody with ebola. Were taking people at their word. Were forced to be on trains, planes, automobiles with people that could be potentially sick. When do the rights of the public sup sup super seed individual rights . Im not a lawyer. Were at the point those needs have to be restricted. That has to be very tightly controlled. My primary concern as i look at this, well now have 4,000 soldiers from the 101st deploying. What will happen to them upon redeployment . Will there be quarantine type situation . Lets hope there is. Always a pleasure to have you all. Thanks for being part of our ebola panel. Well discuss more about this coming up on cnn. Also the standoff in hong kong though the over. A group of pro democracy demonstrators lining the the streets ignoring the deadline.
