That was Robin Williams in one of his many appearances on the tonight show. Carson once called williams one of the most creative and original minds we have today. Frankly, that might have been an understatement. In a statement following the comedians passing, williams wife says she hopes the focus will not be on his death, but on the joy and laughter he gave to millions of people. Lets focus on that. Larry joins us here in studio this morning. Im so glad we had that clip. When he went on that show and others, what you saw was something unique. You saw people like Johnny Carson who would sit back and say, what im looking at right now is unbelievable. Youre absolutely right. Hes a funny person. You would watch Robin Williams and you would be shocked and stunned by how that brain was working. You were laughing, but you were amaz amazed. I heard it described as dazzling imagination and dazzling improvisation. Absolutely. When you look at it now is that it was incredibly wise. It was never mean. It had no contempt. It had a joy about life and he was constantly striving to make these kinds of connections. You look at everything from will ferrell to south park to john stewart, you see Robin Williams in all of that. You cannot underestimate the influence hes had. Weve been looking at quotes all morning from aladdin. Its like the disney an may tors could not keep up with the energy. Without question. Hes doing ed sullivan, hes doing rifts about pop culture in that movie. They strapped in for the ride and let him go and made the character around him. We talk about how people like carson revered him. What was he like as a celebrity in the world of hollywood . He was very, very wellknown. He was part of the establishment of hollywood. He did a lot of work with comic relief and things like that. He had his own share of personal problems. He was married three times. He was very open about his drug abuse. He went back to rehab in 2006. So he was exceedingly wellknown. Had a lot of influence and a lot of love. Who out there did not like Robin Williams, not only the performer, but the man out there in hollywood. You talk about the addiction. Hek, he was there the day that john belushi died. Then he was sober for 20 years and then fell back into alcoholism. He said when he fell back, there was no particular trigger. It lies in wait, waiting for you to think everythings okay. He made a joke about it. The next thing you know, you wake up and youre in cleveland. It was something he was very, very open with. He could be this massive celebrity, this wild comic mind, but he admitted he had the same problems lots of other people had. Im most struck by his comedic talenttalents, but he w serious actor as well. You have insomnia which may have helped lead into his relapse into alcoholism. He played psychiatrist in good will hunting. You can just feel there was something in his real life hes tapping into thats making that performance work. When you watch those serious roles, you keep almost waiting for something to happen as it goes on. He knows you know that. He knows you know he was mork. You can call mork silly. If you want to go back and watch it now, hes freaking hilariouh. He was on this sitcom, crazy ones on cbs. That was cancelled. You do wonder if that had any impact on him. He checked back into a rehab facility. He also had open heart surgery about six or seven years ago. Like a lot of people, he was dealing with all kinds of issues. Im reluctant to guess about his psychological state, but i think all those things were impacting him. If theres one role that youll remember, what will it be . I have to go back to mork. I know that dates me. You have again this Free Association upon which all the other roles were built from. It was that incredible, Incredible Energy that i think people sort of strapped in and watched and couldnt get enough of. What you saw was this limitless talent that we got to enjoy for decades and decades. We should all to an extent be grateful if that. Great to have you here with us this morning. Nanu, nanu. Thanks for that. Lets give you a look at your headlines. A North Carolina man is suspected to having ties to isis militants was arrested at a new york airport. He is being held without bond. That was a clip of Robin Williams in of course the hit show mork and mindy. This morning the world is really still trying to come to terms with the comedic geniuss death that happened just yesterday. Its believed he committed suicide after a battle with his depression. He was be remembered as well for his many dramatic talents. Lets talk about that with these guys. Good morning. Good morning. I would never think wed be sitting here to talk about the death of Robin Williams. What do you make of it . I think that one of the things that made him so unique, he came at a time when comedy icons were becoming rock stars. But what made him different is people expected him to go and play his greatest hits. They expected him to do something magic. They expected to get Something Different that theyd never seen before. He was something fresh and new and thats what made him stand out among other comedians just telling the same old jokes over and over again. And the outpouring of love has really been, i think, something to note. It spanned from politicians to fellow entertainers. Everyone has a memory. It seems as though if you knew him, you loved him. Really, what he was able to do so many comedians are thought to have a certain kind of darkness that fuels their comedy. Obviously Robin Williams was very outspoken about the depression he suffered for a long time, the addictions that went hand in hand with that depression. But those who knew him, worked with him, colleagues, someone i spoke to last night, they all said he was the most generous, kind hearted, with a capacity for joy man that they had ever known. He was the sort of person that would say, how are you, but not just mean it as a throwaway sentence. He wanted to know how are you doings, how are you feeling, what is going on you. He wanted to know people. He had a profound ability to connect. It seemed to translate on stage or in front of the camera. No matter what his jokes were, they never seemed to offend. The New York Times noted that this morning and it stuck with me. He also expanded what comics were expected to be able to do on screen. I remember seeing him with steve martin. To me, its not really a funny play all the time. They way they performed it, he found the humor in very bleak subject matter, able to expand material and take it to places that maybe you wouldnt expect. He did that on screen as well. Other comics have tried to have serious movie careers. Hes a guy that exceeded doing it. He can make money at the box office to the tune of 3 billion for his movies in total at the box office in the United States, 5 billion worldwide. Few other actors can make that claim. And you talk about his ability to cross over, to do the funny and to do the dramatic, the serious very well. One of those roles is in good will hunting. Lets take a listen just a bit. Thats what made her my wife. She had the goods on me too. People call these things imperfections. But theyre not. Thats the good stuff. He was so real. He was. And actually, that scene has been shown a lot, but its notable that right before that line, he tells a little joke that has matt damons character in stitches. Even in his most dramatic roles, that joy, that spirit, that humor, that witt, he worked it in and found a way even if it wasnt in the script. It found its way into everything he did, on screen and off. People who knew him said that he could always make you laugh, always bring a smile to your face. Even in the most dramatic moments on screen, that was also the case. How do you square the impossibility of someone who can bring so much joy and who seemed to get joy out of making people laugh and to bringing his performance to people, how can he lose this battle to his inner demons like this. Theyre in his work. Watch his standup. He talks about addiction and cocaine and alcohol. Its there in his movies. What dreams may come deals with depression and suicide and death. In the movies like worlds greatest dad. This was a guy exploring some of these subjects in his work. Its weird when someone passes on, sometimes what theyre actually talking about, oh, these are things hes actually been dealing with all the time. Maybe it wasnt such a shock, its certainly sad. And as you noted, kate, he talked about this. Its not like this was some private struggle that finally just came to light. Did anyone get any idea he was in such trouble . The struggles he suffered have been profound. Theres really three issues at play here. There was the depression, there was the addiction and something getting overlooked is the open heart surgery. This is a man who had severe heart problems. He underwent a grueling surgery and grueling recovery from that. That took a toll on him. So he was also struggle with with that for quite some time. When you put all those three things together and consider the fact just last month he did return to a rehabilitation type of facility for on going maintenance of his sobriety, that pointed to the fact that things were becoming troubling for him, clearly. This is not as though it came right after his oscar win. His show was recently cancelled. That has to be a blow. He returns to rehab. I mean, its clear that there was a darkness encroaching. And it seems clearly to have overtaken him. And yet the hits kept oncoming for him. The guy was a star since the 70s. I remember doing a story in the 90s and coming out later this year youll have the sequel to night at the museum. He has had big, Major Projects throughout all the way from the 70s until today. Do you have a favorite Robin Williams moment or a film that you think hell be most remembered for. I dont know if most remembered for this film, but dead Poets Society, its a film you can watch over and over again. You can name so many. Awakenings, again, there are few celebrities where you can name many projects. That you personally love. I absolutely agree. Dead Poets Society is tremendous. Apple use add segment from that, they used Robin Williams voice. His voice is as iconic as that poem. Its a fictional character of course, but i think that that role speaks so well as well as Shawn Mcguire in good will hunting. And so unique that you are pointing out more of his dramatic roles. He truly is a unique character that will never, never be matched. We can all say that. Christopher, great to see you. Kate, thanks to much. Were following a lot of news this morning. Lets get right to it. This morning, remembering a legend. Good morning vietnam Robin Williams has died. An autopsy is scheduled for sometime today. Authorities will have a News Conference at 2 00 eastern time. Kate, back to you. Thank you very much for that. Robin williams was also known for his charity and humanitarian work including uso tours and his years of involvement with the Charity Comic relief. And phone in, we take credit cards, we take checks. Please dont send us any guns because we dont have any toys. But we do have tshirts ladies and gentlemen. Yes, we do. You know bob is the president , founder and producer of comic relief and a very good friend of Robin Williams. He is joining us now. On this morning you have to you have to try to not laugh when you see him. I even saw you cracking up when im sure youve seen that clip over and over again. Thats just what Robin Williams did. Amazing guy. And like you said, everybodys talking about his comedy and dramatic roles, but he did so much to help those who were unfortunate. I started comic relief with Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal 28 years ago. Weve raised over 60 million. And robin, he was the one from the getgo that was insistent that we would raise funds for the homeless community. What was it about the homeless communicate that really struck robin, do you think . Well, you know, robin was kind of born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He came from a very rich family in chicago. His dad own add car dealership that was very successful. So i think he felt he was given so much and that he needed to give back. They did about robin whoopi and billy probably did about 11 comic relieves. They would come in days before and rehers and perform, but they would go to homeless shelters themselves. The first time we went to a homeless shelter in downtown l. A. , a very kind of scary place, it was the only time i saw robin freeze. He was in front of this mass of homeless families and he couldnt talk, if you could believe it or not. And he was so moved. And afterwards, we went back into the Directors Office and the director said, ronnen, these people wanted you to make them laugh. He wentd back out and he killed. He just killed. Tremendous guy. A great loss. And what was your first reaction when you heard of the news yesterday . Im still in shock. You cant believe it. Because he was so lively. Ill tell you this, but knowing robin on a personal level ive known robin before he was a star. And i must tell you when you went with him and it makes sense of what happened. When you were with him just alone, he had no social skills. He couldnt handle it. He would be it would be like i knew this man for 35 years and yet it was like i was in an elevator with a stranger. There had to be two people in the room and then you were an audience and then he came alive. I think it was its like when youre that high and performing and it was bipolar, the high are highs and the lows are lows. And theres nothing sadder than when a comedian is by himself and has to face the demons. Unfortunately, i believe this is what happened. And Robin Williams has spoken publicly about his struggles. He was really quite open about it. Did he speak about it on a personal level with his friends like you . No, no, no. Thats why everybodys shocked. He was very good at covering it up. Like you said, he spoke about it. So we would see him on shows talking about it, even joking about it. That even makes this more shocking. Absolutely. Youve known him as you said nearly 30 years now. Is there a moment when you maybe during one of your comic relieves, was there a moment when you said i have now seen the genius of Robin Williams . No, he just amazed you all ill tell you a funny moment, though. He was i was Andy Kaufmans writer for ten years. When andy did his famous show at carnegie hall, it was in the movie man on the moon and everything. Andy started the show by bringing out his grandmother he was like 85 years old. He told her and brougtd her on stage, he said, remember i was a little boy and i said some day im going to be famous, but you didnt believe me. She says no. What else did i tell you . I told you something else. You told me youd give me the best seat in the house. Ladies and gentlemen, andy brought out his grandmas sofa that he had flown out from florida. Then andy did this great show. At the end of the show he said, id like to thank my guests. He said the new york city rockets. They came on and started kicking. He said id like to thank the mormon tabernacle chiropractor. Then he said, id like to thank santa claus. And then he said, id like to thank my grandmother and this little old lady that you watched for three hours on stage, she gets up and he says id like to thank my grandmother, played by Robin Williams. And the grandma that throws her cane out in the audience and ripped off the makeup and it was Robin Williams. It was one of the greatest theet yat call moments of all time. But he sat there for three hours not joking around or anything. A few years after that, he called me up and said im doing this movie mrs. Doubtfire. Who was that makeup person we use when had i played the old lady at carnegie hall. And a great friend with a big generous heart. You dont often hear see the pairing of jean yous and generosity. And he raised him, Whoopi Goldberg and billy chris call raised over 60 million on the telecast that they did. Amazing. Amazing. Theres just one moment. We played it earlier in the show. Id love to get your thoughts on it. This was one of the moments of Robin Williams speaking on inside the actors studio. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearl ligates . Theres seating in the front. The concert begins in five. It will be moez art, elvis and one of your choosing. Or just nice to know theres laughter. Just to hear god goes, two jews walk into a bar. You can almost see his process playing out as hes giving just what are perfect oneliners. How do you think Robin Williams himself would want to be remembered today . Oh. Thats a tough one. I think robin was so down to earth and he really did not walk around with any airs that he was special at all. But i think whats shocking, what were finding out in this situation is how many people really love this guy. This is really, really hurting people in a big way. You know, especially, you know, what were hearing about how how this happened to him. Its just its too much to to take in. Its a lot to wrap your mind around. Especially as someone who knew him so well. Thank you for taking a few moments. We really appreciate it. Thank you. Creator of comic relief. John, over to you. What a terrific discussion. Overnight, gunshots and tear gas in ferguson, missouri where an unarmed teen anger was fatally shot by police saturdays. 18yearold Michael Brown was shot multiple times by a Police Officer in broad daylight. Witnesses say the teenager had the air. Authorities say the teen attacked the Police Officer in his car. This shooting has sparked outrage and fueled a National Debate once again about race and police. We want to dig deeper. Its a heavy heart that i know the three of us discuss this. But i want to start with the oped that you wrote yesterday, really moving piece. I actually want to read a portion of it. I am tired of our streets being peppered with dead unarmed black people. Tired of listening to armed assailants describe how they feared for their lives. That was a visceral reaction from you. Yes. Ive been generous for about 20 years now and have covered all sorts of stories from politics to i was a restaurant critic, a film critic, obviously sports. These stories of children dying, of mothers and fathers having to bury their kids are always difficulty to write. When its this particular scenario, it not only is difficult to write as a dad, its difficult to write as an american. This is a story that weve been watching now for like a hundred years. I went back and took a look at the American Film Institute list of the greatest films of all time. 1915, griffins film, theres a film about what would happen to thank you. Birth of a nation what would happen to the country if black people were free and how mena menacing black men were portrayed. You fast forward to today, and i dont see very much difference. Its interesting. A lot of people are saying how many more times does this kind of thing have to happen. Interesting that weve seen another night of protests, another night of tear gas. Weve seen the looting and the reaction. Speaking of the word visceral, very violent reaction there on the ground in ferguson. Browns parents have pleaded for calm. As a mother, as a radio personality, as an attorney, what was your reaction to all of that violence . Sure. I was of course watching it like everybody else just wishing that people would stay calm and not loot. Of course its wrong to react that way. But i do understand the reaction. We talked about this on the radio show yesterday and went back and forth with a lot of people that just say, you know, that behavior is incomprehensible. To me, i understand the pain that is behind that behavior. I understand the situation of the lashing out. And no, its not everybody thats doing it. There are people who are just trying to take advantage of an opportunity. But most of it is about the frustration with police and the wanting to just lash out at something, to throw something through a window, to try to get something that youre never allowed to have or you just cant get easily. Thats what behind that. All the time, we look at that and say people shouldnt be doing that. But thats the pain of the struggle that people are going through. Thats the pain of another black boy who was unarmed or a black man dying in the street and being left there for hours. Theres years and years and years of pain inside of that activity. And so i wish people wouldnt just look at it like that. Its much more than that. Its a systemic problem. Our legal analyst said something yesterday. She said often this is how the voiceless try to express their outrage. I want to talk to you both as parents. You both have teenagers. L. Z. , i know you wrote this oped partly because you wanted to expression your frustration as a parent of a black teen, a male. Interesting to me that we heard Michael Browns mother, a sobering comment on the challenge of how to get just a young black child to graduate from high school and then to have this to happen. Absolutely. Ill be honest with you, when i heard that statement, i teared up because i know exactly what shes talking about. I know how proud my mom was and relieved when i finally graduated from high school. I grew up in detroit on the east side which is a very rough and violent side of the city or the more rough and violent side of the city for those on the outside. And the relief that i lived and that i graduated and i knew what that feeling was as my son was getting ready to go out of a country this year to study abroad. And im like, hes almost done. You know, hes almost graduated. And weve navigated him through all this pain. It is difficult. I you know, my heart just goes out to her. I want to ask you real quick, put your lawyer hat on and talk as an modern for a second. We know the investigation is not complete. Theres differing sides to the story. There was not a dash cam on board that Police Officers cruiser. Is there any doubt in your mind that this could have been anything else than what it appears . Well, i mean obviously there has to be a full investigation and also the Justice Department is doing an investigation as well. What i find to be very interesting is that the very young man, dor january johnson who was with Michael Brown that night has yet to be interviewed by the Police Department in st. Louis. His lawyer even offered him up for an interview and the Police Department declined. Its as if they do not want to hear the facts of the person who was standing right next to Michael Brown when this incident happened, when this killing happened. So its very peculiar to me as to why it is taking the st. Louis Police Department and the ferguson Police Department so much time to talk to someone who would seem to be the most key witness of all in this case. And it just making you think, there has to be a reason why both sides are not being brought forward right now. I dont know why that is. I hope we will find out in the days the officers name, i hope well find out what his side of the story. And then well begin to start the process of what really happened that afternoon. We need to take a look at that and try to get that community the nation as a whole to heel after we reel from such a disturbing turn of events in ferguson. Thank you both for your contribution today and always. Were going to take a short break. Still ahead, really unbelievable video to show you. Heart pounding in fact. Incredible rescue effort in iraq. A cnn crew right in the midst of it it all. Youre going to see the amazing heroics. Also still ahead, more reaction to the stunning and shocking passing of actor Robin Williams, dead after an apparent suicide. Were going to take a look at his ongoing battle with depression. What did you say to him . I just slid my ticket across the table and said sorry guys, i got to see about a girl. And they let you get away with that . They saw it in my eyes that i meant it. Youre kidding me . Im not kidding, will. Welcome back to new day once again. Were following of course the death of oscar winning actor and comedian Robin Williams. Authorities in marin county, they believe the 63yearold actor took his own life. Williams battled with depression for year and his struggle with sobriety was something he talked very publicly about on larry king on sn as well. What happens in rehab . What happens . You dry out. People basically start the process of, you know, just saying no and being among others and learning that youre not alone and working on giving up. Do you lose your sense of humor in it . No. You find it. Youre with people who have a great sense of humor. You got to be. Lets talk more about this. Lets bring in psychiatrist dr. Jody gold. We were talking about before the segment, he seems like someone who had it together. Thats why maybe its so shocking for folks. This is a man thats been talking about his Mental Illness since the 1970s. Hes been a role model and advocate for meant illness. What does that tell you as a psychiatrist . Does that bring to light kind of the ugly truth that even if youre talking about it publicly, it doesnt mean that its not right back there waiting for you . Its an insidious illness, all of it. It can be treated and managed. Just because it looked like he had it all together doesnt mean he wasnt tortured on the inside. What kind of perspective can you offer . You have a man who brought so much joy and laughter to so many people who seemed to thrive on doing that. How can you square that then with his battled this so privately and lost the battle to those private demons . Sgli think the fact that he on the outside had it all together doesnt mean anything. It sounds like one of the ways he copied with the depression was by being degree gar just and outgoing. When he was manic, i think he felt funnier and more driven. He was such a role model that you can endure and be funny and successful. But he lost the battle. Doctor, how does addiction and depression go hand in hand . We know well kind of the his track record. He talked publicly about his cocaine and alcohol abuse. He quit that cold turkey after one of his very close friends, john belushi died. Then he fell back into drinking back in the early 2000s. He talked very publicly about that in an interview. And then he was just in rehab this summer i believe once again dealing with his dealing with his demons. How how does addiction and depression, how does it go hand in hand . In medicine, we talk about comother bidties. Its very common for people with depression to struggle with substance abuse. While he had a lot of success, he also had a lot of risk factors. He suffered from addiction and depression and bipolar disorder. He was an older man. All risk factors for suicide. One of the things thats also surprising is hes been battling and very public about this for so many years. His family, his friends, especially his closest loved ones, they had to have been aware of the triggers or if he was maybe going into that dark place again. Does it show you that it doesnt matter how close you are, that its something you have to deal with on a very private, personal level . I want to be clear, a lot of suicides are preventable. I dont know in this case whether this was preventable or not. I think he would want the message to be is that while you have to suffer and work, it can be preventable and families that have loved ones that suffer, they need to take it seriously, they need to ask questions. Even if you did look like one of those that had it together. Yeah. That doesnt mean inside hes not struggling. If you have a loved one, you have to ask them about it, you have to remove firearms, you have to get them help. You have to take it seriously. Some of these tough questions of course. Im sure a lot of his family and friends are asking themselves this morning. Thanks so much for being here. Thank you for having me. All right. Lets give you a look at headlines. U. S. Secretary of state john kerry urging iraqs newly designated Prime Minister to govern inclusively building a united front against isis militants. He was nominated, but maliki saying hes not going to go quietly. He claims appointing a successor is illegal and threatens to use the courts or armed force to keep his job. In iraq, the political turmoil and the fight against isis militants only parts now of the big picture. There was also this humanitarian crisis unfolding. Civilians, thousands of them in need of the basics. Theyre stranded on a mountain by isis right now. Theres members of the yazidi minority. Desperate for any bit of help. Our Senior International correspondent ivan watson went on this rescue mission to that mountain under siege. Reporter machine gunners unleashed bursts of hot metal. This is the crew aboard an Iraqi Air Force helicopter. They burn through cart rajs and belts of ammunition while rushes an aircraft over isis front lines. Civilians trapped on sinjar mountain. Theyre opening fire at targets down below. They say they and theyre clearly trying to defend the aircraft. You can see the people below trapped on sinjar mountain, theyre clustered under olive trees right now waving to us. They seem to have gathered in these shelters down here. A lot of women and children waving. The crew hurls packages out the door. People swarm the chopper. This has been one chaotic aid distribution. I really hope we didnt hurt anybody with the bottles of water we were throwing down from the height of 20, 30 feet. Its chaotic. People were waving. They were giving thumbs up. And there are a couple people very relieved to be off the mountain and clearly very, very frightened. Then the helicopter lands one last time to pick up more passengers. Here they come. More desperate people throw themselves at the aircraft. Heaving their children on board. Its first come, first serve. There were some who couldnt make it. Aboard the aircraft, shock. Exhaustion. Fear that eventually gives way to relief. I cant describe to you how relieved people are right now. The shock and the chaos of that moment. But weve got this little girl here, shes not happy. She says her father got left behind. The gunners are opening fire on targets below. Theyre protecting the helicopter. But its terrifying these little kids who are traumatized after their week trapped on that mountain. The problem is were flying over isis front lines. This is the only protection we have right now to protect the aircraft and its precious cargo. Tensions ease when we cross into kurdish controlled territory. And for a moment, there are even smiles as these children realize their ordeal on the mountain is finally over. Ivan watson, cnn over sinjar mountain in Northern Iraq. See them smile like that is such a welcome thing. Most of us thank god will never know what its like to fear for our lives and assume that we will not survive like the people on that mountain right now. They are traumatized from their week on that mountain. Its not just that week. They are fleeing with nothing. They fled their homes with whatever they had on their back because these tens of thousands are people are stuck there because they were facing genocide. Either convert or be killed is what isis is presenting most of them. Many of them probably felt there was no hope. They didnt think there will be help coming their way. Shame they more thanks to ivan watson to bringing that story. Coming up next on new day, were going to return to talking about Robin Williams, the loss of a legend. A Cruise Missile goes look, a city, lets destroy it every time i do that, i feel like richard simmons. Lets go girls, lets go five, six, seven, and move it an actor and comedian who worked with Robin Williams, hal, thanks for being with us. Growing up as a comedian yourself what did Robin Williams mean to you . He established a new standard for comedians. There was a period to which comedians were sequestered in a corner and emergency in case of emergency break glass and we would come out and tell jokes. He made it possible the world according to garp and what he did afterwards to establish that comedians could present a dramatic side. The world according to garp the depth that he showed as an actor almost eclipsed his comedy in that moment and that was a first for hollywood in a lot of ways. They couldnt dismiss him in that way. Heres a man literally as whacky as they came on a sitcom, and then from that turned it into a depth of character and warmth in a dramatic way that heralded him with every other dramatic actor, he was on par with anybody elses in my opinion. As a comedian and mork, literally in the script in mork theyd say mork does his thing. Robin would, there was no way to corral that part of him. He was like a coiled spring. There was no ceiling, almost no ceiling to his abilities as a comedian. No sense of what he could do. He could do almost anything. You see the footage of Billy Crystal on stage, Whoopi Goldberg. These people are funny and they look at Robin Williams, i am not worthy. What he does is just different. You were in a show with him. What was that like . Yes, we were doing set list and it was one of the nights where its an improvised standup show and they throw as many monkey wrenches into your act as they possibly can during the course of the show. Thats how it works. Its one of the things most comedians look at it as walking a tight rope, the hardest possible version, unprepared standup set. That was robins forte. We had finished the show, patting ourselves on the back for a reasonable show and feeling good about ourselves until we realized robin was in the audience hanging out back stage zane a set. It was on a completely different level. It just was. He could own a space as a comedian that was fearless, you know, and it was a beautiful thing to watch because i felt always and there will be a lot of talk, i know nothing about his struggles with depression on a personal level. He always seemed such a joy, but it seemed to me he was so empathetic about his audience. Instead of being one of the comedians where i want to you see me, i want you to notice and like me, it never seemed to come from that. It seemed to come from a space of i know youre having a rough week and i know its my job to make you forget that for a time, and it was, i felt that any depth of sorrow or kind of depth of character that you could really feel in his presence it was there in every word he said, came more from his caring about his audience. It was a beautiful thing, you could tell, see it in his eyes. You talk about the empathy and caring. You had a chance to work with him and get to know him at a different level talking about helping and reaching out to veterans. He worked for the troops so much. Absolutely. He performed a lot. I did a couple of benefits trying to raise awareness for the new g. I. Bill. He and sally field were instrumental in that happening. Again he was able to, and i think this was his power as an actor put himself in the emotional skin of the person he was portraying, and i think that came from his feels as a comedian that he could just absorb the emotions and the people around him. If you ask anybody, he wanted every detail about the circumstance he could come up with. When he would show up to do a show or he would perform for the troops, he wanted to know the commander in charge, he warranted to know the geography of the area. He wanted to know problems they ran into every so often and he would pour that information into himself. It was like this perfect machine inside him that would start to build comedy on the reality of the situation and it was because he wanted everybody there to feel part of it. He was this vessel for this energy of laughter, and it was a gift he gave to so many other such a long period of time. Hal sparks, great to have you with us this morning. Really appreciate it. Prime minister Nuri Al Maliki is intent on staying in power but the United States is throwing its support to his designated replacement, al abadi, hoping hell form a new cabinet to stand against the isis rebels. Nick paton walsh has much more from baghdad. Nick . Reporter kate, its down to Nuri Al Maliki how much more political chaos has to endure. John kerry is almost referring to Nuri Al Maliki being in the past and the French Foreign minister blamed him for being responsible for the chaos iraq is currently enduring. How fast can he put together a cabinet, he has 30 days. Hes trying to process the government and also the question is how desperate is Nuri Al Maliki . Does he have enough to hold on through force, does he have any grounds in the courts to try and use the fledgling constitution of iraq to cause a hurdle for formation of this new government . All difficult questions. So far today hes been relatively quiet. Little sign he has much fight left in him. Many foreign capitals wishing maliki would step back so iraq can move on. Nick paton walsh in baghdad, thanks so much. President obama applauded the move to name a new iraqi Prime Minister calling it a key step toward forming a government that can unique different factions. Jim what more are we hearing from the white house on this . Theyre applauding this but looking at the 30day transition where it seems anything but clear what is going to happen. Kate, its not clear what the u. S. Will do if iraqi Prime MinisterNuri Al Maliki refuses to step aside. The president interrupted hadis vacation to congratulate Haider Al Abad i. He pledged his support and that was all he needed to say about his support for Nuri Al Maliki. He was basically saying its time for maliki to go and the u. S. Is continuing to raise pressure. Secretary of state john kerry in australia overnight basically said the u. S. Will boost its support for Iraq Security operations and the u. S. Security operations in Northern Iraq, should abadi be able to put together a more unified government something they feel Nuri Al Maliki failed to do. The president is scheduled to have a much more quiet day on Marthas Vineyard. Kate, tomorrow is going to be very interesting. His former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who has criticized president obamas approach to dealing with isis, she will be here on Marthas Vineyard for a book signing and lo and behold, the president , the first lady and Hillary Clinton will all be at a party here on Marthas Vineyard tomorrow evening hosted by democratic adviser vernon jordan, a white house official confirming earlier this morning the president and first lady will be attending and they look forward to seeing Hillary Clinton here tomorrow evening. That is a clip from the powerful new documentary airing tonight on cnn the war comes home. It shines a light on the internal battle many veterans fight when they return home, the struggle with anger, depression, thoughts of suicide. It is a painfully honest look at soldiers coping with posttraumatic stress. Guess whos here . Our soledad obrien, the ceo of Starfish Media Group behind the powerful documentary. Shes here with me now. I am so moved by this, and especially in light of what we were talking about, our breaking news today that weve been following, Robin Williams death, depression, and the struggle very stigmatized. People dont want to talk about it. With he saw the veterans we profiled, these two young guys felt the same way. They didnt want to tell their commanding officers, i have post traumatic stress. They didnt want to talk about the anxiety, the nervousness, just the things that were in their heads, because its very stigmatized. They were taught to be warriors. All those things make it much worse when youre not sharing. This program that they go through, which takes about five and a half days, i think the first thing they do is kraicrac that shell and say this is a safe place to talk about these things. In case youre thinking these are a few cases i want to drop a staggering statistic you say is low. 22 veterans commit suicide a day. So thats 8,000 a year, and if you look at how they track those numbers, there are many states that dont track suicides, so only probably half those states even report at all, and then they dont track death by cop, they dont track someone who overdoses, dont track somebody who drives their car off of a bridge. I think the statistics are low. Its a huge problem when we consider the veterans returning home, a big problem and the issues with the va. That compounds the problem. You meet with two returning vets, dalon, he said this program youre referring to that well talk about in a sec. He was going to try it out. If it didnt work he admitted he would commit suicide. He told his wife constantly, save a warrior, if this program does not work, im going to end it. He was working out how he was going to do it. He saved the prescriptions because he got them in bulk from the va. Youre sitting on the side as a documentaran and as the spouse and i, we realized how hard it is on the family members watching this person who has changed sean struggling, and is going through it, and they really cant find hope so to go through a five and a Half Day Program which is not a cure at all, but i do think with meditation, ropes horses, equine therapy, allows people at the end of five and a half days to see maybe another option. Guys going in and the guys coming out are different fellows. Completely. Youll see the two veterans we profile, dalon beckett and Garrett Holmes are completely transformed. The thing that works for them, theyll talk about it in the documentary. Jake clark, the founder of the program, listen to him as he speaks to the new recruits, very powerful message he has for them. We deal with post traumatic stress, and if you were to ask the average person what part of that warrior is messed up, where do you think they would point . Youd point to your head. This isnt broken. Is doing exactly what its supposed to do, okay . This is broken. And thats why youre in that chair, i assert. So many of them go over there thinking theyre going to make a difference, theyre going to make a change. One of your young men admits that he felt that it was his heart that broke when he realized he felt that he wasnt making a change with his service. They also lose i think that brotherhood and sisterhood that folks who are in theater have. They come back and theyre very isolated. Thats a big deal. I this i they feel free in a program like save a warrior to talk about their feelings, that they cant necessarily do with civilians. Dpar receipt garrett says thanks for your service. Hes like you dont no he what i did. You have no clue and yet im going to smile back at you and say thanks. So i think we need to figure out how to let our veterans through programs like, this inexpensive, 1600 bucks per guy is inexpensive, they operate on a shoestring and only hold the cohorts when they can raise the money to do it. We cant help but shine a light and when you bring it to our attention, great to have you with us. Watch this onehour special entitled the war comes home its really powerful. You will not walk away feeling unchanged. Its on tonight. Soledad obrien reports, 9 00 p. M. Here on cnn, really a delight and thank you for this great work my pleasure, thank you. Welcome back to new day, everyone. More now on the death of Robin Williams. Williams was so public with his battle against addiction, the trip to rehab last month, Williams Press representative noted the actor had recently been suffering from severe depression. Were joined by dr. Drew pinsky to talk about this, host of hlns dr. Drew on call. Thanks for joining us. We heard clips of Robin Williams talking about his battles with alcoholism, very publicly going to rehab a few months ago. How can you be so aware of a problem like this, yet so powerless against it . Well, its a reminder to me as a caretaker, in fact, this tragic case, how powerless so many of us are against these conditions both depression, all the brain diseases, depression and addiction, but you know, the fact is, its a brain disease like any other organ disease and in spite of best efforts, there can be a fatal outcome, and that is what this is, such a tragic reminder, the fact this man had cardiac disease treated like any other medical disorder, concretely, systematically, because he had a brain disease that becomes Something Different and that is the disease, the disorder of his brain is what actually took his life. Its just a tragic reminder that the stigmatizatiostigmatization Brain Disorders as something other or special should not go on. My fear is, i dont know this but i imagine the story will be told one day is that stigma contributed here, somehow he felt worthless, ashamed, caused him to isolate as his depression got worse rather than reach out which is what is necessary to save peoples lives. He did talk about it. You say the word Robin Williams, you dont think depression, you think laughter. He made millions and millions of people laugh yet we heard from his friend bob zemuda earlier, theres nothing more sad than a comedian alone in a room. Do you think theres something to that, that they need this outlet . Oh, well sure. I think i have published data on this the fact of seeking celebrity and im sure in the case of people that perform and need to make people laugh, all of that is a bid to deal with things like trauma and depression. Its an attempt on the part of the individual to make all that better, and it kind of does make it better in the moment. Unfortunately, it really doesnt do anything to heal the underlying process. Thats something thats got to be done with professionals, and once again, people shrink away from reaching out and admitting that they have these kinds of problems. Theyre also fearful of the treatments, but understand, under professional supervision, treatment can mean taking long walks and listening to music or just cultivating a closeness with another human being, all these things can contribute to the improvement of depression and addiction both, which are obviously very deeply intertwined disorder and when people have both of them, a reminder, these are potentially fatal illnesses that, in combination, are often fatal. There are tens of millions of people in this country with this disorder. Tens of thousands at least will die as a result of these conditions this year and for every completed suicide, there are between 10 and 20 attempts. These are common conditions and how many times, john, do we have to get up in the morning and talk about people who are taken from us prematurely . Here is a man that brought joy to millions, his family loses him, we lose him. He has lost his life and many wonderful years ahead because of a common disorder that has a treatment, and its a brain disorder rather than other conditions, and one other reminder, the interplay that robin provided us with, a reminder of the medical conditions that contribute to depression, cardiac disorders, Heart Disease and particularly cardiac surgery can put people at tremendous risk for depression. Obviously addiction is a risk for depression and in his case, any genetic history of bipolar or unipolar depression puts people at risk for this thing. He had at least three reasons to have severe difficulty with depression. You talk about the heart surgery. He said it literally opens you up and makes you more vulnerable. You said the ability to reach out and connect with people in these conditions. Robin williams himself was asked about this, doing a sitdown with read it and said how do you get through bad times . His answer was reach out to friends, theyre out there, and know that you are loved. Again what im so struck by is his awareness of the situation, yet it still was too much. Thats right, but that awareness speaks to literally his decades of success in managing his chronic Brain Disorders, which are depression and addiction. These are chronic disorders. These are not like a cold or a pneumonia that get better after youve had treatment. These are things that have to be managed on a daily basis and they can have exacerbation. Emotions flood other us at times, severe mood disturbances and suicide ideology can wash over us and they pass. The problem is when youre in those moments, you cant imagine theyre going to pass, you feel worthless, you isolate. Your thinking becomes part of the problem, you begin imagining that your family, your friends would be better off without you, that youre a burden to other people. You start isolating and thats exactly what these disorders want you to do. As it pertains to what he said with his chest surgery, yes, it feels vulnerable, and it probably actually changes the biology of the brain, and the body. You know, the piece that soledad just played about the warriors and depression, ptsd, really illustrativ illustrative. He said youre broken in here. The heart and the brain are connected, part of the same system and yes, we have to learn that closeness with humans reaching out does help heal those things. Drew pinsky we really appreciate you being with us. Reminder, these are disorders, they need treatment by professionals like you, and by friends like everyone around the world. Appreciate it. You bet. Next up on new day, a second night of chaos in a st. Louis suburb, where an unarmed black teen aiminger was fatelogical a shot by police. The fbi is now investigating. The fbi has launched its own investigation into the Fatal Shooting death of 18yearold Michael Brown in missouri. The unarmed teenager was killed by a Police Officer in ferguson over the weekend. Browns death has sparked outrage in the town and beyond, where he was killed, with many demanding to know why the teen was shot multiple times. Overnight, more gunfire, though, rang out on the streets there, and Police Deployed tear gas in areas to disperse some of the large crowds. Joining us now to discuss, the attorneys for Michael Browns family, Benjamin Crump and anthony greg crump, also the attorney for Trayvon Martins family. Gentlemen, thank you so much for the time. Thank you. No problem, thank you. Of course, mr. Crump, we followed the Trayvon Martin case very, very closely, and here we are when it speaking with you about the death of another teenager. After another night of violence in ferguson, how is Michael Browns family doing today . Theyre having to deal with setting funeral arrangements. Its very difficult for them. Its very emotional, kate, as one would imagine, to lose a child who you go from one moment about to send him off to college, to start his adult life, and then the next day youre planning a funeral, to say good bye to him. Its very hard for them. Its nothing any parent can ever prepare for. Thats absolutely the truth to say the very least. What did the brown family say about the outrage, the anger that theyve seen and the violence theyve seen on the streets of ferguson in the aftermath of their sons death . Kate, they have sent a consistent message, and we want to tell all america in a the brown family asked that everybody be calm, be respectful, be peaceful because they want the legacy of Michael Brown jr. To be one of positive and reflect his life. When you look at this kids history, theres no history of violence anywhere in his history, so they dont want this to tarnish his legacy. So far, there is not a clear picture, at least publicly known, of what happened on saturday night. Do you know in talking to his parents and talking to witnesses, the friend maybe that was with him, that what happened that night . Well first of all, kate, let me correct you. It wasnt saturday night. Apologies, saturday during the day. Saturday during the day at noon, in broad daylight, and there were many, many witnesses who have talked to family members, and they paint a totally different picture than what the Police Version is, and thats the level of mistrust, because people are saying we know what we saw and now youre going to try to spin this and tell us that youre justified in killing this kid, who had his hands up in broad daylight with a tshirt, shorts and sandals . Its just so troubling to this community, they have no faith in the local Law Enforcement so theyre looking to the federal authorities to take over the investigation entirely. My cocounselor, attorney gray, who lives her in st. Louis knows about that history, and why this is such a combustible situation. Well, and mr. Gray then, what do you make of the discrepancy, from what the initial statements were hearing from police, and then what were hearing from Michael Browns family and witnesses who were there . As Benjamin Crump just said, you live there. You know the town. You know the area. What do you, as an attorney, representing the family, make of this discrepancy . Well, its difficult at this point to make any sense of it. The stories are so diametrically different, theres almost impossible to reconcile in terms of their perspectives. Clearly theres one side that sees it one way, and there are several witnesses allegedly that see it a completely ditch way. So at this point, i join with the brown family and attorney crump, and just getting an objective and transparent investigation conducted, so that all of the different facts can come together and we can try to piece this together with the various different versions that we have heard. Perhaps there is a way to reconcile it, and im looking forward to see if this process would achieve that objective. And also, kate, there may be video that is out there, and we know the Law Enforcement agencies has some video in their custody and we are asking that they make it transparent, because it will be clear from the video, and we dont have to speculate what happened. Do you think to this point, i know that its very early on, though, in an investigation into what happened, do you think that there has not been transparency . Do you think that are you concerned that the truth is not going to come out in the end . I think there has not been transparentally because when you listen to what the police said at their press conference, they told totally one side of the story, and they put that out there, kate, as what happened, and we know, if youre being objective, this is what the shooter said, the person that killed the kid said, and this is what witnesses said. They didnt say anything about the witnesses version. They told america what the police said and tried to say, accept this as justification and the brown family, the community, and many of america reject that. Thats not transparency. The fbi, as youve noted, they have opened an investigation. The attorney general, eric holder, in part of the statement announcing this, he said the following the federal investigation will supplement rather than supplant the inquiye by local authorities. Hes saying the investigation on the ground must continue but that they will be looking and obviously doing their own investigation that will supplement the local investigation. What does it mean to the family, and what does it mean to you, representing the family, mr. Crump, that the fbi has opened their own investigation now . Well, the Community Leaders, attorney gray and myself, we were very encouraged when we heard from the attorney general that he was listening to the pleas of the family and the community, but we think to bring calm and have people have confidence, we need the Justice Department to take over this investigation completely, and not rely on the st. Louis Law Enforcement authorities, because that is the reason for mistrust in the community right now, and until we can have complete transparency of an outside authority, i think that is what will bring confidence in this process. Well have to see if the attorney general, the fbi moves in to make that kind of a move. I do want to ask you, though, as this continues, and you say youve heard from the family, youve heard from the community, and theyre so diametrically at this point opposed versions it seems of what happened on saturday, is the family in your view, have you talked to them, are they prepared for the possibility that the police were not in the wrong in how this went down . Have you had that conversation with them yet . You know, this family has been very clear, they want the answers, they want the truth to come out, but they know their child, and they know that its so different from anything theyve ever heard of their child doing, thats whats troubling to them. He was doing positive things. He was looking forward to starting his college career. He was going to a technical college, was going to be his first day yesterday. Why would he do anything adverse, it makes no sense to them, kate, and so for them, they want the truth to come out. They want the answers. They want to know, based on what they have heard from witnesses, because the police have not talked to them. What they have heard from witnesses is inconsistent with anything that the police are saying about how this altercation started and transpired. Everyone, especially the parents of Michael Brown, deserve the truth to come out in all of this, and this horrible tragedy. Benjamin crump, anthony gray, attorneys for Michael Browns family, thank you for your time this morning. Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate it. Of course.
