You have this question of the president trying to reassert himself himself when his authority has been questioned because people are saying you are not doing this in a fashion that is commensurate with what is realistic and prudent. We can trace it back to military options when he was talking about fire and fury with north korea and the leaders had to scramble to bolster that message. The president moves fast on twitter and expects there to be things that back him up that are not necessarily there. We might be reading too much into it. Do i think its appropriate to air the disagreements publicly . No, but inappropriate remarks are sort of part and parcel of the Trump Presidency. He recertified in july. He didnt top the do it either time. In july he was extremely frustrated when he was presented with a binary decision with the state and secretary of defense and National Security adviser. Two of those guys were part of the military brass or former military brass and he was told his options were to certify or decertify. He told them i want more options. I dont want to be given a binary choice. I think his remarks were an exhibit of his frustration at certain points of being forced into a corner by advisers and wanting to have an array of options that give him more flexibility. Can you get flexibility . I get your point of a lot of people need to leave the old rules behind. Some people think thats not president ial and not the way obama or bush or clinton would have done it. Forget that. There is a special place for those who shed blood for us. There is a lot of misunderstanding and a little bit of misreporting on whats happening here. I did not interpret the comments as having a fundamental disagreement. He got a unanimous disagreement including Rex Tillerson to decertify this deal. The path he is taking is a way of having his cake and eating it too. He is not going Pressure Congress to rip up the deal by reimposing sanctions. Its a way of expressing displeasure and rolling out a broader strategy of tougher action towards iran, particularly the guard core. Also without triggering the International Chaos that they fear would ensue if they ripped up the deal. I interpreted mattiss remark is getting out ahead and reassuring the American People and the congress that we are staying in this deal. The administration does want to do. That would be a nuanced approach we dont often see. I think they are trying to strike a middle ground. They are doing it with only republicans. Thats the problem. The way the iran deal moved through is through weird vote conglomrations. You still need the votes to get the legislation through. Thats not true though. This is a multilateral path. Its not if the United States changes term, the decision is not ours alone about whether it hangs together or not. That depends on how europeans interpret it and there are discussions happening beyond the white house to try to see what that affects. I was surprised in the campaign how enthusiastic social conservatives were after grappling with whether to support donald trump which was the furthest thing from a social conservative in the way he lived his life. They got on board with him and endorsed him enthusiastically and have been loyal backers particularly after he chose mike pence as vice president. I continue to be surprised how much trump delivered to him. Many promises he has not kept, but the transgender ban that was backed not by that many people in the Republican Party, but it was something that conservatives pressed for. It makes it function like one. What the nra said is we ought to take a look at that and see if its in compliance with federal law. Its worthy of additional regulation. If you have legislation that says ban, does the nra oppose it and say it will go on the report card or if you vote for this, we will spend money against you in a republican primary . This freaked them out. The idea that you can turn these semi automatic into automatic. This raises the question and i think what he is getting at is if you put a ban on the floor that bans a device that turns something into an automatic weapon, even the initial question is why not a full ban on all automatic weapons which is not the case. If you had a republican president who could sign a simple bipartisan, a republican president who did what he could decide as reasonable rational murder control. You can call it murder control. On the republican side, you have an up and coming young star in the party who latched himself on to team pence and team trump. Its crass. What happened to the big tent and a big diverse happy family . What surprised me about his comments is he said donors should close their wallets until Congress Gets on board. To single out congress for its dysfunction. No doubt they have plenty of dysfunction, but it seems to me the white house and dysfunction played an enormous role in the legislative failures of the trump era. Lets listen. On wednesday in nevada i visited with brave survivors still recovering in the hospital and with Heroic Police officers, First Responders, and everyday american who is acted with speed and courage to save countless lives. No evil on this earth is more powerful than the love and courage of the American People. All of america is praying for the wounded and the grieving. We will be with them today and we will be with them forever. I spent a lot of time going through the hospital with melania and seeing incredible people who were so seriously wounded. We will never leave their side. We are also praying for the people of puerto rico. We love puerto rico. Puerto rico. And we also puerto rico. And we are marshalling everything federal resource at our disposal. Earlier this week i traveled to puerto rico to oversee federal response to the two devastating hurricanes. Remember it was two. It was one and then another. That second one was brutal. They struck that great and Beautiful Island and we now have more than 15,000 federal personnel on the island. 15,000. We will not rest until that job is done. Puerto rico has a long road of recovery ahead and very long road. We know that its people are proud and resilient and they will come back strong. And i spent a lot of people with the governor who is a terrific man. A terrific person, on tuesday. We will be there all the time to help puerto rico recover, restore, rebuild. We are working very closely with your great governor and congresswoman who is terrific. Jessica. We stand with them and with all of those who have suffered through natural disasters over the past several weeks including those in texas and florida and louisiana got hit and got hit very hard. In the state of alabama, it was incredible. They helped so many many people coming up from florida and georgia. So many incredible people. And also we have to remember this. The virgin islands. The u. S. Virgin islands. The governor who is like a friend of mine. I spoke to him so much on the phone. The job he has done, they were hit so hard. Not much was left. But they are rebuilding and the spirit is incredible. U. S. Virgin islands. We are also keeping in our hearts and prayers all of those affected by the disastrous earthquake in mexico. In recent weeks, through extremely difficult times, americans are coming together from all races and all backgrounds to unite as one people under god. I will tell you we sent crews to mexico and the president was very gracious. Called me yesterday and thanked me. We have really talented people. They went there to help to solve that unbelievable difficult problem. That earthquake was devastating and i appreciate the president of mexico and they were so kind in their response, but that was a tragic event. Our people did a fantastic job. I want to thank our First Responders and the people. Thank you. Thank you. And you have a wonderful president in mexico, i can tell you that. When americans unify, there is no challenge we cannot overcome. When we empower the hopes of our people, especially these young fantastic people in front of me who performed so brilliantly, when we embraced the dignity and the beauty of human life and you look out.
