And the American People are looking for some version of strength. And theyre going to see two different kinds here tonight. One man, President Trump who leads from his gut, and another man, joe biden who says to the American Public, im leading with the help of experts and my own experience in government. Those are two very stark choices. And i think its going to be really on display, to the extent these two men have strengths and weaknesses, watching them and covering them over the years. This is going to be a well matched fight and a slugfest. One guy conveys empathy, the other guy conveys toughness, nastiness. I remember in 2012 when obama had his first debate, he had been in a bubble, only talking to people who liked him and supported him. He was rusty and out of shape, talk about a bubble. People talk about the liberal bubble. The maga bubble that donald trump is in where he talks to judge janine and fox folks i guess he has a fox months rater, i wonder what effect that will have. It could. Its not just president obama, george w. Bush didnt do well in his first debate. This is the problem incumbent president s have. Which is why this president , despite the fact that they have been trying to lower expectations saying he hasnt practiced. He has practiced, hes gotten the you know what kicked out of him by his aids and advisers, because they know he has been in a bubble because hes president of the United States. Its not just that hes president of the United States. He secures himself with these siycophantic reporters. He doesnt like to talk about his money. Will he be prepared to talk about things that are getting under his skin in that way . And did he do enough preparation for those things . I do think, to concede to the president in some ways, he does take tough questions from the media all the time. He doesnt always answer from the White House Press corpse. Absolutely. I mean, in interviews. Not in interviews, but from the White House Press corps i think that matters. That is something he does, that obama did not. The point is, hes in a reward system where the most maga friendly stuff gets applauded. The moment that this campaign has been building to for months, President Trump and former Vice President joe biden taking the stage, going head to head in their first president ial debate at this crucial time in americas history. The pandemic. The economy, race in america, the Supreme Court. They will be asked about the difficult issues americans are facing right now. The first of three president ial debates about to begin. Good evening from the Health Education campus of Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic. Im Chris Wallace of fox news, and i welcome you to the first of the 2020 president ial debates. Between president donald j. Trump and former Vice President joe biden. This debate is sponsored by the commission on president ial debates. The commission has designed the format, six roughly 15 minute segments with two minute answers from each candidate to the first question, then open discussion for the rest of each segment. Both campaigns have agreed to these rules. For the record, i decided the topics and the questions in each topic. I can assure you none of the questions has been shared with the commission or the two candidates. This debate is being conducted under health and safety protocols designed by the Cleveland Clinic, which is serving as the Health Security adviser to the commission for all four debates. As a precaution, both campaigns have agreed the candidates will not shake hands at the beginning of tonights debate. The audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. No cheers, no boos or other interruptions so we and more importantly you can focus on what the candidates have to say. No noise except right now as we welcome the republican nominee, President Trump and the democratic nominee, Vice President biden. [ applause ] how are you doing . Good. How are you . Im well. Gentlemen, a lot of people have been waiting for this night. Lets get going. Our first subject is the Supreme Court. President trump, you nominated Amy Coney Barrett over the weekend to succeed Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the court. You say the constitution is clear about your obligation and the senates to consider a nominee to the court. Vice President Biden, you say that this is an effort by the president and republicans to jam through an appointment in what you call an abuse of power. My first question to both of you tonight. Why are you right in the argument you make, and your opponent wrong. And where do you think a Justice Barrett would take the court. President trump in this first segment, you go first, two minutes. I will tell you very simply, we won the election. Elections have consequences. We have the senate, we have the white house and we have a phenomenal nominee, respected by all, top top academic. Good in every way. Good in every way. In fact, some of her biggest endorsers are very liberal people, from notre dame and other places. I think shes going to be fantastic. We have plenty of time, even if we did it after the election it 168, i have a lot of time after the election, as you know. I think she will be outstanding, shes going to be as good as anybody that has served on that court. We really feel that. We have a professor at notre dame, highly respected by all, said shes the single greatest student hes ever had. Hes been a professor for a long time at a great school. And we just we won the election, and, therefore, we have the right to choose her and very few people knowingly would say otherwise. And by the way, the democrats, they wouldnt even think about not doing it. The only difference is, theyd try to do it faster. Theres no way they would give it up. They had merit garland but the problem is, they didnt have the election, and they were stopped. And probably that would happen in reverse also. Definitely would happen in reverse. President trump, thank you. Same question to you, Vice President biden, have you two minutes. First of all, thank you for doing this. And im looking forward to this, mr. President. Thank you, joe. The American People have a right to have a say in who the Supreme Court nominee is, and that say occurs when they vote for a United States senator and when they vote for the president of the United States. Theyre not going to get that chance now, because were in the middle of an election already. Election has already started. Tens of thousands of people have already voted. The thing that should happen is, we should wait. We should wait and see what the outcome of this election is. Thats the only way the American People get to express their view is by who they elect as president and who they elect as Vice President. Now, whats at stake here is the president has made it clear he wants to get rid of the Affordable Care act. Hes been running on that, he ran on that, and hes been governing on that. Hes in the Supreme Court right now trying to get rid of the Affordable Care act which will strip 20 Million People from having insurance, Health Insurance now if they if it goes to the court. And the justice and i have nothing im not opposed to the justice, she seems like a very fine person, but shes written before she went on the bench, which is her right, that she thinks the Affordable Care act is not constitutional. The other thing thats on the court and if its struck down, what happens . Womens rights are fundamentally changed. Once again, a woman could be held to pay more money because she has a preexisting condition of pregnancy. Theyre able to charge a woman more for the same exact procedure a man gets. And that ended when we in fact passed the afford an care act. And theres 100 Million People that have preexisting conditions and theyll be taken away as well, the preexisting conditions, Insurance Companies are going to love this, its just not appropriate to do this before this election. If he wins the election and the senate is democrat oar republican, then he goes forward. If not, we should wait until february. There arent 100 Million People with preexisting conditions. As far as the say is concerned, the people already had their say, they Justice Ginsburg said very powerfully, at some point ten years ago or so, she said, a president and the senate is elected for a period of time, but a president s elected for four years. Were not elected for three years, im not elected for three years. We have the senate, we have a president youre elected to during that period of time, we have an opening. Im not elected for three years, im elected for four years. And the majority the hundred Million People is totally wrong. I dont know where you got that number. The bigger problem that you have is youre going to extinguish 180 Million People with their private health care. Thats simply not true. Number one, he knows that what i proposed, what i proposed is that we expand obamacare, and we increase it, we do not wipe any one of the big debates we had with 23 of my colleagues trying to win the nomination that i worn, were saying that bide ing wanted to allow people to have private insurance still. They can, they do. They will under my proposal. Thats what you said, and thats not what your party has said. Thats not your party wants to go socialist medicine. Now, heres the deal, the deal is, that its going to wipe out preexisting conditions and by the way, the 200,000 people that have died on his watch, how many of those have survived . Theres 7 Million People that have contracted covid. What does it mean for them goingforward if you strike down the Affordable Care act. Joe, youve had 308,000 military people dying because you couldnt provide them Proper Health care in the military. Dont tell me im happy to talk about if you were here it wouldnt be 200,000 it would be 2 million. You didnt want me to ban china, you didnt want me to ban europe. Okay, mr. President you would have been much later. Mr. President. Youre not going to were going to talk about covid in the next segment, but go ahead. Let me finish, the point is, t the president is also posed to roe v. Wade, thats on the ballot as well in the court, thats at stake right now. You dont know its on the ballot. Why is it on the ballot. Because you said its note on the ballot. Its on the ballot in the court. I dont think so, theres nothing happening there. And you dont know her view on roe v. Wade. You dont know her view. All right. Lets talk we have a lot to unpack here, gentlemen. We have a lot of time. On health care, and then well come back to roe v. Wade. Mr. President , the Supreme Court will hear a case a week after the election in which the trump add ming station along with 18 state attorneys general are seeking to overturn obamacare. Thats right. To end obamacare. Because we want to give good health care. If i may ask my question, sir. Good health care. Over the last four years you have promised to repeal and replace obamacare, you have never come up with a plan a comprehensive plan. Listen to replace obamacare. Of course i have. I got rid of the individual mandate. Excuse me. I got rid of the individual mandate that is that is absolutely a big thing. I would ask you, sir chris, that was the worst part of the obamacare. Let me ill ask joe. The individual mandate was the most unpopular portion of the act. You have never come up with a comprehensive plan to replace obamacare and just this last thursday you signed a largely symbolic executive order to protect people with preexisting conditions five days before this debate. So my question, sir, is, what is the Trump Health Care plan. First of all, i guess im debating you, not him, im not surprised. Theres nothing symbolic, im cutting drug prices, im going with favored nations which no president has the courage to do, because youre going against big pharma. Drug prices will be coming down 80 . You could have done it in your 47 year period in government. Nobodys done it. All of things we have done. Hes not insulin is going it was destroying families, destroying people, im getting it for so cheap, its like water, you want to know the truth. So cheap, take a look at all of the drugs that what were doing, Prescription Drug prices, were going to allow our governors now to go to other countries okay, when in fact. This is not open discussion. This is big stuff. Sir, youll be happy, im about to pick up on one of your points to ask the Vice President. You would like to add a public option to obamacare. Yes. And the argument that he makes, and other republicans make, is that that is going to end private insurance. It is not. Im asking the question. Im sorry. Thats not what your party says, by the way. It will end private insurance and create a government takeover of health care. Its only for so those people that are so poor, they qualify for medicaid, they can get that free in most states except for governors who wants to deny it. Anyone who qualifies for medicaid would be enrolled in the public option. The vast majority of the people would not be in that option number one. Joe, you agreed with Bernie Sanders who is far left, the manifesto i called it. Im not going to listen to him. I beat Bernie Sanders. Not by much. Im standing here facing you. If he would have left two days early, you would have lost every primary on super tuesday. I got very lucky, im going toe get very lucky tonight as well. Why . With what . Obama care as you might know, but dont gentlemen, you realize if youre both speaking at the same time let the president obamacare is no good. We made it better, and i had a choice to make very early on, we took away the individual mandate, we guaranteed preexisting conditions. Not true. Yes it is, thats the way it is. And that destroyed. They shouldnt even call it obamacare. I had a choice to make, do i let my people run it really well or badly. If i run it badly, theyll blame him. But theyll blame me, but more importantly, i want to help people. You have to run it so well. I just had a meeting with them. The problem is, no matter how well, you run obamacare, its a disaster, its too expensive, its premiums are too high, it doesnt work. We we do huang the to get rid of it and get something cheaper. Like almost Everything Else he talks about, he does not have a plan. He doesnt have a plan. And the fact is, this man doesnt know what hes talking about. All right, i have one final question for you. Sure. Mr. Vice president. If Senate Republicans we were talking originally about the Supreme Court here. If Senate Republicans go ahead and confirm Justice Barrett, there has been talk about ending the filibuster or even packing the court, adding to the nine justices there, you call this a distraction by the president. But in fact it wasnt brought up by the president , it was brought up by some of your democratic colleagues in the congress im saying. My question to you is, you have refused in the past to talk about it, are you willing to tell the American People tonight whether or not you will support ending the filibuster or packing the court whatever position i take on that, that will bhk the issue. The issue is, the American People should speak. You should go out and vote. Youre voting now. Vote and let your senators snow how you are you going to pack the court . Let vote now. Are you going to pack the court . Make sure you let people know. Im not going to answer the question. Why wont you answer that question. The question is you want radical left am you shut up, man. Who is on your list. Who is on your list. Gentlemen, i think we have youre not going to give a list. We have ended the segment. That was a productive segment, wasnt it. Keep yapping, man. The people understand, joe. 47 years youve done nothing. All right. The second subject is covid19, which is a serious subject, so lets try to be serious about it. Weve had more than 7 million cases of coronavirus in the United States, more than 200,000 people have died. Even after we produce a vaccine, experts say it could be months or years before we come back to anything approaching normal. My question for both of you is, based on what you have said and done so far, and what you have said you would do starting in 2021, why should the American People trust you more than your opponent to deal with this Public Health crisis going forehead in this case, the question goes to you first, sir, two minutes uninterrupted. Good luck. 200,000 dead. As you said, over 7 million infected in the United States. We in fact have 5 4 of the worlds population, 20 of the deaths. 40,000 people a day are contracting covid. In addition to that, about between 750 and 1,000 people a day are dying, when he was presented with that number, he said, it is what it is. It is what it is, because you are who you are. Thats why it is. The president has no plan. He has not laid out anything. He knew all the way back in february how serious this crisis was, he knew it was a deadly disease. What did he do . Hes on tape acknowledging he knew it, he said he didnt tell us or give people a warning of it, because he didnt want to pan iks the American People. You dont panic, he panicked. In addition to that. What did he do . He weng the in and he we were insisting the people we had on the ground in china should be able to go to wuhan and determine for themselves how dangerous this was. He did not even ask xi to do that. I told us what a great job xi was doing, we owe him a debt of gratitude for being so transparent with us. What did he do then . He then did nothing he waited and waited and waited, he still doesnt have a plan. Wrong. I laid out back in march sir, its his two minutes. So wrong. I laid out again in july what we should be doing. We should be providing all the protective gear possible. The money the house has passed in order to be able to go out and get people the help they need to keep their businesses open. Open schools would cost a lot of money. You should get out of your bunker and get out of the sand trap and your golf course and go in your oval office and bring together the democrats and republicans and fund what needs to be done now to save lives. So if we would have listened to you. You have two minutes, sir. The country would have been left wide open, millions of people would have died, not 200,000. And one person is too much, its chinas fault, it should have never happened. They stopped it from going in. When you talk about numbers you dont know how many people died in china, you dont know how many people died in russia, you dont know how many people died in india. You won the have made ventilators. Now were weeks away from a vaccine. Were doing therapeutics already. Far fewer people are dying. Weve done a great job. The only thing i havent done a good job and thats because of the fake news. No matter what you say to them, they give you bad press on it. They give you good press, they give me bad press. Let me tell you something, i dont care, ive gotten used to it. You could have never done the job we did. You dont have it in your blood. I know how to do the job, i know how to get the job done. You didnt do very well on swine flu. H1n1 you were a disaster. 14,000 people died not 200,000. It was a very sir, you there were no you made a point, let him answer. Theres no one we didnt shut down the economy. This is his economy that hes shut down. The reason its shut down is because, look, you folks at home, how many of you got up this morning and had an empty chair at the Kitchen Table because someone died of covid . How many of you are in a situation where you lost your mom or dad and you couldnt even speak to them, you had to have a nurse holding the phone up so you could say goodbye. You would have lost far more people. You would have been and by the way, his own cdc director says, we could lose as many as another 200,000 people between now and the end of the year. If we just wear a mask we can save half those numbers. Just a mask. And in terms of the whole notion of a vaccine. Were for a vaccine, but i dont trust him at all, nor do you, i know you dont. You trust scientists. You dont trust johnson and let me move on to questions about the future. Both of you have touched on two of the questions i have asked. President trump, you have repeatedly either contradicted or been at odds with some of your governments own top scientists, the week before last, the head of the cdc dr. Redfield said it would be summer before the vaccine would become generally available to the public. You said that he was confused and mistaken, those were your two words. Yeah. But the head of your operation warp speed has said the same thing. Are they both wrong . Ive spoken to the communities and we can have it sooner. People like this would rather make it political than save lives. Ive spoken to pfizer, ive spoken to all the people you have to speak to. We have great moderna and johnson and johnson. Its become very political, because the left or so youre suggesting the head of your operation warp speed dr. I disagree with him. He said it could be there, but it could be much sooner. He talked about the summer before its generally available. He said its a possibility that well have the answer before november 1st. It could also be after that. Its not generally available. Were going to deliver it right away, logistically, we have them set up. They deliver soldiers, and they can do 200,000 a day. This is the same manning that told you by easter this would be gone away. Its all set up. By the warm weather it would be gone, like a miracle. And maybe you could inject bleach in your arm and that would take care of it. That was said sarcastically, you know that. Heres the deal, this man is talking about a vaccine, every Serious Company is talking about maybe having a vaccine done by the end of the year. But the distribution of that vaccine will not occur until sometime the beginning or middle of next year, to get it out. If we get the vaccine. And pray god we will. Pray god we will. Mr. Vice president , i want to pick up on this question. Youll have the vaccine. You say the public can trust the scientists, but they cant trust President Trump. Your running mate goes further saying the Public Health experts will be muzzled will be suppressed. Given the fact that polls already show that people are concerned about the vaccine and are reluctant to take it, are you and your running mate senator harris contributing to that fear . No more than the question you just asked him. You pointed out, he puts pressure and disagrees with his own scientists. Youre saying, senator harris is saying you cant trust the thats what hes going to try to do but theres millions of scientists, thousands of scientists out there, like here at this great hospital that dont work for him. Their job doesnt depend on him. Thats not, theyre the people. And by the way i spoke to the scientists that are in charge. They will have the vaccine very soon. If you believe for a moment what hes telling you in light of all the lies hes told you about the whole issue relating to covid, he still hasnt even acknowledged that he knew this was happening, knew how dangerous it was going to be back in february, and he didnt even tell you. Hes on record as saying it. He panicked or he just looked at the stock market, one of the two, because guess what . A lot of people die and a lot more are going to die unless he gets a lot smarter, a lot quicker. So mr. President . If you use the word smart, so you said you went to delaware state but you forgot the name of your college. Didnt go to delaware state. You graduated either the lowest or almost the lowest in your class. Dont ever use the word smart with me. Dont ever use that word with me. Theres nothing smart about you, joe. 47 years, youve done let me just tell you something, joe. If you would have had the charge of what i was put through, i had to close the greatest economy, and by the way, now its being built again. The economy in the next segment, sir. Its going up fast. When it comes to how the virus has been handled so far, the two of you have taken very different approaches and this is going to affect how the virus is handled Going Forward by whichever of you ends up becoming the next president. I want to quickly go through several of those. Reopenings, Vice President biden, you have been much more reluctant than President Trump about reopening the economy and school. Why . I know what the plan is. Youve got to provide these businesses the ability to have the money to be able to reopen with the ppe as well as with the sanitation they need. You have to provide nancy pelosi. Will he just shush for a minute. Tell it to nancy pelosi. Schumer, chuck. Nancy pelosi and schumer will have a plan. The republicans wont meet in the senate. And he sits on his golf course and, i mean, literally, think about it. You probably play more than i do, joe. What about the question of reopenings . He wants to shut down this country, and i want to keep it open. And we did a great thing by shutting it down wait a minute, let me shut you down for a second. Just for one second. We want to, he wants to shut down the country. We just went through it. We had to because we didnt know anything about the disease. Now we found that elderly people with heart problems and diabetes and different problems are very, very vulnerable. We learned a lot, Young Children arent. Even younger people arent. Weve learn add lot. But he wants to shut it down. More people will be hurt by continuing, if you look at pennsylvania. If you look at certain states that have been shut down, they have democrat governors all. One of the reasons theyre shut down is because they want to keep it shut down until after the election on november 3rd. Because its. I want to move on to another subject. Those states. I want to move on to another subject. Those states are not doing well that are shut down. President trump, you have begun to earn creasingly question the effectiveness of masks as a disease preventer, and in fact recently you have cited the issue of waiters touching their masks and touching plates, are you questioning no, i think the masks are okay. You have to understand, i have a mask right here, i put a mask on when i think i need it. Tonight as an example, everybodys had a test and youve had social distancing and all of the things that you have to. But i wear masks when needed. I wear a mask. I dont have i dont wear a mask like him, every time you see him, hes got a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away from it, and he shows up with the biggest mask ive seen. Vice President Biden, go ahead, sir. The way to open businesses is to give them the wherewithal i was asking you about masks. Masks make a big difference. If we just wore masks between now and social distanced between now and jiaanuary, we would probably save up to 100,000 lives. Theyve also said the opposite. No serious person said the opposite. Dr. Fauci. Dr. Fauci said the opposite. He said very strongly. We have a minute left in this segment. He said masks are not good. Then he said he changed his mind. Your different approaches have affected the way youve campaigned. President trump, youre holding large rallies with thousands of people packed together. Outside. Yes, agreed. Vice President Biden you are holding much smaller events. Because nobody will show up. Its true, nobody shows up to his rallies. In any case, why are you holding the big rallies, why are you not . Because people want to hear what i have to say. Are you not worried about spreading disease . Ill have 25,00035,000 people showed up at airports, with he use airports. Are you not worried about so far, weve had no problem. Its outside, according to the experts, its a big difference. We do them outside. We have tremendous crowds as you see on 24 hours notice. By the way, did you see one of the last big rallies he had. A reporter came up to him to ask him a question. He said, no, no, no, stand back, put on a mask, have you been tested. Im way far away from those other people. Thats what he said, i cant im going to be okay. Hes not worried about you, hes not worried about the people out there weve had no negative effect. Weve had no negative effect. Weve had 35,000, 40,000 people at these rallies. I want to finish up yes, i would. Hes been irresponsible encouraging not to wear masks. If you can get the crowds you would do the same thing. But nobody cares. Nobody cares. Gentlemen, can we move on to the economy . Yes. The economy is recovering faster than expected from the shutdown. Much faster. In the second quarter. The Unemployment Rate fell to 8 last month. The hit to growth, which is going to be there, is not going to be nearly as big as they had expected. President trump, you say we are in a vshaped recovery. Vice President Biden, you say its more of a k shape. What difference does that mean to the American People in terms of the economy. President trump in 24 segment, you go first. We built the greatest economy in history. We closed it down because of the china plague, when the plague came in we closed it down. It was hard psychologically to do. He didnt think we should close it down. 2 Million People would be dead now instead of 204,000 people. Is too much. One person is too much. It should have never happened from china. What happened is, we closed it down and now were reopening, were doing record business. We had 10. 4 Million People in a four month period that we put back into the workforce. Thats a record, the likes of which nobodys ever seen before, he wants to close down . He will shut it down again. He will destroy this country. A lot of people between drugs and alcohol and depression, when you start shutting it down, you take a look at whats happening on some of your democrat run states, where you have these tough shutdowns, ill telling you, its because they dont wan the to open it, one of them came out last week, were going to open up on november 89th. Why november 9th . Its after the election. They think theyre hurting us by keeping them closed. People know what to do, they can social distance, they can wash their hands, wear a mask. They have to open these states up, when you look at north carolina, when you look these governors are under siege. Pennsylvania, michigan and a couple others, you got to open these states up. Its not fair, youre talking about almost its like being in prison, and you look at whats going on with divorce. Look at whats going on with alcoholism and drugs. Its a very sad thing. Hell close down the whole country. This guy will close down the whole country and destroy our country. Our country is coming back incredibly well, setting records as it does. We dont need somebody to come in and say, lets shut it down. All right, your two minutes sir, we now move to you. As i said posing the question. Take the federal fleet and turn it into a fleet that is run on their electric vehicles. Making sure we can do that. And put 500,000 charging stations in the highways that well build in the future. And build an economy that in fact is going to provide for the ability to take 4 Million Buildings and make sure they in fact are weatherized in a way that will emit significantly less gas and oil. And if you dont youll have significant economic consequences. What about the argument that President Trump says that you have to balance environmental interest and economic interest and hes drawn his line. He hasnt drawn a line. He makes sure he wants to make sure methane is not a problem. You dont have to have standards for automobiles that exist now. He says the its all true. The Green New Deal. Its not 20 billion. Its 100 trillion. Im talking about the rebuild the building. Its the dumbest airplanes are out of business. Two car systems are out. Where they want to take out the cows. Thats not true either. This is a 100 trillion. More money than our country could make in 100 years if i actually have studied your plan. And it includes upgrading 4 Million Building the weatherizing two million homes over four years. Building one and a half Million Energy efficient homes. So the question becomes the president is saying, some people would say that sounds like it will cost a lot of money and hurt the economy. It will create thousands and millions of jobs. Good paying jobs. Let him finish. He doesnt know how to do that. It will create millions of good paying jobs and tax incentives to weatherize. It will make the economy much safer. Look how much were paying now to deal with the hurricane. And the he has an answer. Drop a Nuclear Weapon on them. You made it up. Heres the deal. What do you prepared to do to reassure the American People that the next president will be the legitimate winner of the election in this final segment. Vice president go first. Let people vote. Im counting on them to look at the ballots. I hope we dont need them. I think so. Whats happening is incredible. I read today at least 1 of the ballots for 2016 invalidated. They take and we dont like them. What are you going to do about it . Millions go out. Go vote. A solicited ballot. Or go vote. The fact millions of people. Go and vote. Like they used to. Either do a solicited ballot. You send it in and send it back. And send they have mailman with lots did you see whats going on. West virginia. Mailman setting ballots. Theyre being sold and dumped in rivers. This is a horrible thing for the country. There is no evidence of that. This will not end well. Five states had mail in ballots for the last decade. Five. Including two republican states. And you dont have to solicit the ballot. Its sent to you. Theyre saying it has to be a postmark by the time election day. If it doesnt get in until the 7th it should be counted. Hes afraid of counting the votes. Youre wrong. Vice President Biden the biggest problem over the years with mail in voting hasnt been fraud. It has been that sizable numbers. Hundreds of thousands are thrown out because they have not been properly filled out or some other irregularity. The question i have is are you concerned that the Supreme Court with a Justice Barrett will settle any dispute . Im concerned any court would settle this. Heres the deal. When you file get a ballot and fill it out, youre supposed to have an affidavit. If you didnt know you have someone say that this is me. You should be able to. If in fact you can verify thats you before the ballot is thrown out. That is sufficient to be able to count the ballot. Someone made a mistake and not dotting the correct i. Who they voted for, testify, say who they voted for. Say its you. That is totally legitimate. You have 80 million ballots sent in swamping the system. It cant be done. Already its been fraud. Eight states. Election workers are prohibited currently by law from even beginning to process ballots. Even take them out and flatten them. Until election day. That means it is likely because there will be a huge increase in mail in balloting that we are not going to know on Election Night who the winner is. It could be days. It could be weeks. It will certainly raise a lot of questions about the future of the president ial debate between these two candidates. I wouldnt be surprised if this is the last president ial debate between the president of the United States and the former Vice President of the United States. We shall see. Fairly soon. Joe biden clearly showed up today. He went head to head with the president of the United States. Who was often put on the defensive interrupting the Vice President repeatedly. This will be a relief to a lot of the biden supporters who are going into the this fairly nervous. The former Vice President showed up. A lot to analyze and discuss. That was a hot mess. Inside a dumpster fire. Inside a train wreck. That was the worst debate i have ever seen. It wasnt even a debate. It was a disgrace. And its primarily because of President Trump. Who spent the entire time interrupting not abiding by the rules he agreed to. Lying. Maliciously attacking the son of the Vice President. When asked to condemn white supremacy. He brought up the name of a far right group. And said stand back. And standby. Well talk about who won the debate and who lost. One thing for sure, the American People lost. Tonight. That was horrific. You took the word out of my mouth. Im going to say it like it is. That was a shit show. Were on cable. We can say it. Apologies for being crude. But that is really the phrase im getting from people on both sides of the aisle on text and the only phrase i can think of to describe it. I couldnt agree with you more. The people who have been hurt the most by that are the people who are genuinely looking to see what each candidate stands for. And who they should vote for. There are still people out there who havent made up their mind. On which candidate to vote for or whether to vote. Im not sure that particularly on the ladder point that that performance and that the theater there, the Reality Tv Show. The bad Reality Tv Show will help them in the least. It was a complete disaster. On all fronts. If you came into this thinking that two men in their 70s who want to be the leader of the free world for the next four years could have a reasonable exchange of ideas. You came away from debate thinking its not possible. You could hardly hear them at certain points. There was so much cross talk. As you pointed out, we should be clear here, this is not both sides type of situation. There was one party on that stage. Interrupting. Yelling over the moderator. And from the very beginning what was so striking to watch was that usually these debates build. And build and build to the end. We started at a 12. On a scale one to ten. The president was really i think in a very agitated state. Early on in the debate. And the tone was set. I have heard already from people who very much support the president. Want him to do well. As this was going on. He was way too hot. They knew he was going to be aggressive. He was going to try to be on offense as much as possible. This took it too far. Even for donald trump. Think about if youre undecided. And dont like the president s style but some of the policy. And you come in tonight and the president i dont know if joe biden won the debate. He had nice moments. I thought he was kind of flat. Thats irrelevant. The way the president behaved, again the Antidefamation League is already out there asking the president to clarify why he didnt condemn white supremacist. And told the group to stand back and standby. The way that the president behaved on the debate stage is the way the president behaved in american politics. Hes dominant and if you like that, great. He was rude, he didnt abide by the standards or decency. It was really frankly embarrassing. To clarify something, it was almost entire lu trump. I wasnt talking about joe biden the part i was unsure about. The moderator. He didnt have control of the debate stage for much of the evening. He didnt remind the president he was violating the rules until one hour and 13 minutes into the debate. The whole thing was disgraceful. And when you talk about the fact that the president took it to a new low, there was one part in particular. Its hard to pick out. That was really unbelievable. Which is when joe biden was talking about his son who died. Who he was incredibly close to. Talking about him in the war hero. And somebody who was in the military. And what did the president do . He shot at him about his son who is living as a drug addict. That was a moment joe biden didnt prepare for. He was trying to pivot away from the talk about his family. In that moment he turned to the camera and said my son did have drug issues. Like many of you out there. That wasnt something we talked about it. That he talks about very much. That was a moment where joe biden was able to shine. As the president was incredibly low. Much lower than his people. Political attacks and things that lack decency. In that moment it was obvious the president was trying to shoe horn a political attack against one son. While biden was talking about another son who served in the military and died. That comes across. The American People are not stupid. It goes to show another thing that seemed clear to me. Really from the beginning was the lack of control. That the president had over his own strategy. The plan he had going into this. What did he want the American People to take away . You couldnt tell. In so many instances you couldnt understand what he was trying to say. He was yelling over people. One final thought. Chris wallace was pressing the president on the idea of would he concede if he loses. Joe biden said yes, of course, i will. The president wouldnt. It occurred to me the thought that the president doesnt think hes going to win the election. And he wants to bring the rest of us down with him. Anderson . Thank you very much. And i dont know what came out of the debate. I dont know what side won. I dont know what voters want. But you cannot have watched that debate i would think, and be proud of our president. The way he thinks of us as viewers as americans trying to decide about the future of the country. Can anybody come away from that knowing what trump wants for the next four years . Does this surprise you . No. To see it on such full display. The guy on the stage is the guy we have seen for four years. Rick santorum predicted what he would do. The question is whether he over torqued it and went over board. I would say way over board. And i dont think that he is going to profit from this. I think trump may have ended his presidency tontd. With his performance. I thought the president was going to come out hot. He did. He did come out hot. Its not even funny. Are you proud of the president of the United States . I think he over played his hand. Heres what i saw on stage. The president who you can hear it by him reciting the things that happened throughout the presidency. The he feels like hes been mistreated and by the prior administration. All the narcissist and psycho paths feel that. Doesnt make it true. The president came out hot. And because he is feeling aggrieved and im telling you. He felt like this is his opportunity to sort of turn the table and turn it onto joe biden. And give biden the grief he has been given over four years. I dont think is worked. To answer correctly. I think he came out way too hot. I dont think biden particularly did a great job. But i think that was over shadowed by the fact trump was over doing it. It was here you have a president playing victim. When 200,000 plus people have died. From covid19. We know this is a president full of grievance. Tonight he took the presidency and the office of the presidency to a new low. The American People who have suffered for the last six months plus with this pandemic, deserve a better debate and better explanations from the president of the United States. And what i heard from him was contemptible. Out of control. Almost monsterous at points. When he was talking about hunter biden on a personal level. Refusing to denounce white supremacy. Standby. What does that mean . What was that . Hes so full of grievance. But cant get passed himself. If he was looking to change the mind of any women voters, a lot of women would look at this and be frightened by it. First of all, jake said this was a circus. Circus workers reached out and say actually we take offense. We are careful and respectful people. We work very carefully. Circus workers are taking offense. This was worse than a circus. Only three things happened. Number one. Donald trump refused to condemn white supremacy. Look what the proud boys are doing because the president of the United States prefused to to condemn supremacy. What surprises you . He was asked these questions before at a president ial debate. This is how he led. I thought joe biden did fine. He hung in there, like riding a bucking bronco. And he showed his fundamental decency which is what people are yearning for in contrast to this president. Everybody was critical of biden when he was relatively quiet. He gained during those months. I think the same thing happened tonight. The time he didnt get to speak because the president was interrupting him, i think that worked for biden. Should there be other debates . The Vice President ial debate is next and there should be two more president ial debates. I dont think the country will be yearning for these. You know what will happen if the biden says he doesnt want to dignify another debate. I dont think the country wants another one of these spectacle. Trump failed tonight. He had to figure out a way to get women back on board for him. That kind of kindergarten behavior wont get female voters on board. He said he was going to reach out to africanamericans on the economy. Had an opportunity to brag on his black record and instead talked about portland. A clinical matter, i am upset. Everybody i know is disgusted, upset or angry. Even my republican friends. There was not a single thing he needed to do tonight except offend a lot of credible people. He was a bully. He wasnt paying attention to his own rules well, that that his people agreed to. Biden would say its hard to get a word in with clown or just shut up. There were a couple of times when biden did interrupt the president and it threw the president off and those were real missed opportunities. One of the other things the president did was by being the person he is, we are talking about how he did as opposed to biden just standing there ends up looking better than anybody. I thought there were a couple of moments when biden did poorly. He would not give an answer on packing the court. I thought that was a bad moment for joe biden not to say i am not going to do those things. It was lost in this debate. He did come out hot. I dont think Chris Wallace i understand jake said he didnt step in, but i think Chris Wallace was overwhelmed. You are in there in the moment and you dont expect this. I thought wallace did a pretty good job shutting him down. I thought he was helpful to joe biden on many occasions shutting the president down. By the end he said two minutes and you agree to it. The president calmed down and the last half hour or so was somewhat of a reasonable debate. But the die was cast. I think the president got hurt tonight. How about when they were talking at the end about the potential for rigged election. The president was frightening, threatening when he talked about the election. He said this is not going to end well. What does that mean to the American Public . That if you go and vote in person or you vote by mail, that something is going to happen . What is going to happen . Was he predicting violence . I dont think thats fair. Thats taking it too far. What the president is saying the same debate about white supremacy. An armed group to stand down and stand by. I dont think he was telling them that, but he did not answer the question directly and he should have and it was wrong. I have no idea why he didnt. He did. He answered it by his silence. Why he didnt do it when directly asked that, i dont know why he didnt do it and it was a mistake. When asked about the young man shot in kenosha, he defended the young man. He has given aid and comfort to these groups because he feels they are on his side. All you need is to be on Donald Trumps side conspiracy theory, because they believe he is on their side. First thing on record about the group in stereotypes talking about drinking the blood of children. These are age old rival naz zi things yeah, but he got elected for this in a way. He has spent his life skirting norms and institutions. Is it surprising in this most important debate of his life that he trampled over the rules in this debate. What you saw tonight was the reason that donald trump has the problems that he has, and it has as much to do with who he is as a person as any of his positions, although those are areas of vulnerability as well. A couple of things about biden. First of all, there were a lot of people on left and right who werent sure that gas had enough gas in the tank to get through the night. Those questions were put to bed. He was able to stand and deliver and deal with the harassment and bullying. He certainly wasnt a powerful figure on the stage. But at the end of the debate you felt he was a dont human being. I want to call the stuff fair. There was concern can biden make it, dole wieal with the body bl. That was a significant development. People were wrong. Biden got asked the tough question about rule and order. He said i am for the rule of law. When trump got tough questions, he couldnt do it, wouldnt do it, didnt do it. If you are looking for peace packing the court . He ducked. Thats a huge issue. If you are looking for peace, you have to compare the performances. Biden answers the tough questions more than he didnt. Trump ducked. Back to wolf. People were watching this debate around the world. 200 countries and territories. Clearly this debate was an enbae embarrassment for the United States of america. In the big picture, how much was fact and how much was false . It depended who we were listening two. President trump, there were times where almost every single thing he said during the concluding section of the debate was inaccurate.
