Anniversary of the end of world war i. This weekend he gathered scores of war leaders including President Donald Trump to pay tribute with him. I talked to him about his relationship with trump, ability about the great war and whether there is a danger of discord and miscalculation and tragedy, about the rise of populism and how he is fighting it at home and abroad and about his plan to make france great again. But first here is my take. When confronting bad news these days many of us toeend to assum it is a bump on the road. President obama was fond of invoking the famous quote. It bends towards justice. Could we be wrong in assuming that in spite of some backsliding here and election there progress is . World leaders commemorated the end of the largest and bloodiest conflict the world has ever seen. It marked a turning point in human history. The end of four massive empires t. Entry of the United States into global power politics. Perhaps the most significant intellectual was the end of the idea of inevidetable progress. Before the war began people lived through economic growth, technological revolutions and increasing globalization. It was widely believed that ugly trend lines were temporary, to be overwhelmed by the on ward march of progress. In 1909 wrote a book explaining that war wean the major powers was so costly as to the unimaginable. The great illusion became an International Best seller. A few years later a generation of europeans was destroyed in the carnage of world war i. Could we be similarly complacent today . There are serious states men who believe so. He said i dont want to belong to a generation of sleepwalkers that have forgotten its own past. As he wrote in his book the states men of 1914 stumbled into a world war without ever realizing the magnitude of the dangers of their isolated decisions and nondecisions. He is not simply talking. He organized a form of more than 60 World Leaders which began to try to combat the dangers of rising nationalism. Are these dangers so real and pressing . If you compare the world it feels less like the 1930s than the 1920s. Economic growth and Technological Progress were celebrating then as now. We are also seeing a surge in nationalism which were the hallmarks of the 1920s. New great powers were ascending as they are now. Democracies were under strain from demagogues when they destroyed institutions and established controls. Under all of this was the growth of racism and antisemitism. It is outside of the real nation. Of course because of these pressures in the 1920s we have got to 1930s. The historian makes a distinction in his new book the road to unfreedom between what he calls the politics of inevitably, the politics of eternity. The latter is the view held by leaders like putin that nothing is inevitable. Now, putinmay not win. The efforts of people like him to reverse the progress might not succeed. It will take more effort from those ton other side. For more go to cnn. Com and read my Washington Post column this week. Lets get started. He spent much of the day with donald trump whose first action on friday night was to tweet. Trumps tweet read he has suggested that the own military in order to protect itself from the United States, china and russia very insulting. S in any event it was designed to get attention which it did. I asked whether a clash between him and trump was inevitable. We had very good decisions this morning and confirmed he was okay. I think theres does that mean his tweet with was a mistake . Im not the one to command his tweets. I always refer answering questions at making my diplomacies for tweets. I think we had a very clear discussion. It is better. I agree with that. I think in order to have better sharing all of us do need more europe. I think its a big mistake to be very direct with him. What i dont want to see is European Countries increasings of budgets in defense in order to buy americans on others coming from your industry. I think it is to have to build that and to become a sovereign. In spite of our credibility the rest of the world. I think it is right. I think im right to promote this. What i do believe is that if at this stage europe has to become a more consistent and more sovereign part. He says you have lots in common. Im wondering what that is. He calls himself a nationalist. He draws on pop list forces. So what do you think you have in common . Probably the fact that both of us, outsider of the classical positions i would say and arrive from the business side. He was not a favorite and unexpected candidate. I was pretty much in this in france probably because we are in line against the fight against terrorism. We work very closely together. We know where we disagree. But obviously youre right. I would say im a patriot. I do believe in the fact that our people are very important and having french people is different from german people. Im not a believer in a sort of globalism without that. I think it doesnt it is very inconsistent and its extremely it makes our people very. It is not a nationalist. It is from being a patriot. I do defend my people and my country and we do have a strong identity. I am a strong believer the law of the strongest, thats probably the difference. Do you think it matters to have a personal relationship with donald trump . Of all foreign leaders he seems to warm towards you. You tried very hard to keep him in the paris climate deal. He said no. You tried very hard i remember talking to you in washington, to stay with the iran deal. He said no. I know from my reporting you try today get him to have a united front on trade, to go to china with that and he refused. So it doesnt seem that personal dynamics matter that much with donald trump. I think it does matter. Youre right about the outcome and different issues. There is a very clear driver for your presence that when committed to do something he delivers along this line. I do pretty much this time. So on all of the different issues you mentioned it did and he is doing what it is committed to do during this come paiampai. I think it can some times highlight some issues at stake. I think it is very important because it allows us to have a better follow up. For instance he decided to leave. Finally, it did respect the fact that we decided to remain. Because of this he accepted the fact that when we remain we have a different approach. We coordinate each other which is the best way to avoid a big k crisis. They want it so its very important. So i think it is to try to optimize the situation under certain constraints and mine is to bear in mind that it is deeply rooted and has to be preserved beyond that. Will europe come up with an alternative with the dollar as part of the response to the United States withdrawing from the iran deal . I think today europe is not a clear alternative. Why . Because defacto there is an International Due to strengths. Until now we failed to make it as strong as a dollar. We made it we made a great job during the best years but its not yet sufficient. We are too much dependent. It is an issue of sovereignty forming. So thats why i want us to work closely with our Financial Institutions at the european levels in order to build a capacity to be less dependent from the dollar. It i think for the stability of the global order you need this but you need some identity. Euro has to be an alternative. We have to better reour Financial Institute at the level. I know it was his decision but this is a place that french and american soldiers fighting for freedom. It is very important. Were you disappointed . I think it is because of weather and for security reasons. I do respect that. He wanted to go there. He was not in a situation to go there because his helicopter was blocked due to the weather. I appreciated the intention to go. If you remember at the white house garden we put it coming in together it is to still have a tree in a certain way for presenting this alliance and the presence of marines. These Young American people came and they were in 1920. I mean they died there in a place they didnt know. It is unknown of families. In my office i have the best in key that he brought to washington its so strong that we are for the future all together. It should be noted that today President Trump did go to an American Cemetery and in the rain. Next on gps, on a day that we tauz to remember a world war is world peace fragile . Ill talk to him about that when we come back. I so many interesting details. N ancestrydna was able to tell me where my fathers family came from in colombia. They pinpointed the colombia and ecuador region and then theres a whole new andean region. That was incredibly exciting because i really didnt know that. It just brings it home how deep my roots are and it connects me to them and to their spirit and to their history. This holiday, give the gift thats connected millions to a deeper family story. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month world war one came. It was marked in paris and around the world. On thursday the gps team was with president macron when he visited a world war i memorial. It is at a tomb of the unknown soldier. He genuinely committed to the idea of reconciliation has gathered more than 60 World Leaders in paris not far from here for a meeting about peace today. I wonder is part of that forgetting of the past that the United States. I talked to people in europe and there was a real sense that one of the crucial pillars of stability that has kept the peace since 1945 was americas unwaivering commitment to europe. People do worry that under President Trump that commitment is no longer as strong, perhaps not even there. Thats why i think it was very important to take such an initiative. It is the 11th of november of the end of the First World War. Probably we lost peace at that time. The first for me is yes indeed to be deeply rooted in our past. Being very much attached to freedom and always remember the cost of the inner peace. Nobody has in mind this cost. The First World War is 10 Million People killed. It is huge. It was a generation devastated. I think its very important to do it this day in order to remember and to remember that peace is very fragile. Second is corporation. For me after the First World War our predecessors started to to lead nations. Exactly to build the first corporation. He played a very Important Role even if the u. S. Didnt join this common group. He had a very important the u. S. Has a very Important Role. It failed. It failed because of probably humiliation. And the of germany. And lack of participation of the United States. Probably at the time. Definitely the financial and economic prizes. The raies of nationalism. It is only known to the letters of the certain world war. So thats why i do believe that corporation is the second pillar of peace today, how to Work Together and im a strong defender of that. Some times people consider it too long very painful but for me it is one of the very important outcomes of the two world wars. They are negotiationing, discussing is always better than war and its very important. We need to u. S. Commitment for such a corporation. Your country has a very Important Role. It wasnt i mean during the past decade the u. S. Played in certain ways the last resort of this international community. So we do need your involvement. Thats why i always fought. I will fight to have the u. S. Involved in these corporations. I think its important to have the u. S. Participating to Climate Change and different initiative. I doe believe its very important that President Trump. But it has been very clear. She says that your rope needs to recognize it cannot rely on the United States as much anymore. Is that the reality of the world . Look, i think the new reality of the past decade, it didnt start two years ago. The recent years were very much by the presence of the u. S. I think the u. S. Remains our first ally everywhere and a very important and key partner in syria and middle east, africa and different places. But after a certain world war the u. S. Played a very Important Role for the european securities. It is changing. It is changing because of the fact that your i think i have to say i share this with you. If after the certain world war we needed the u. S. To be present for our security. I think now as a momentum is to build its own security and its own sovereignty. I think its not something against the United States. I think thats a very good compliment. We have to share values. We have to Work Together on common goods against equalities against Climate Change. Thats why im increasing and thats why i do want to build more solidarity. I think its very important. If you want to build it. If you want to reenforce it and the strength you have to convey the message to people in poland, in finland. Thats the day they have an issue. Europe is the one to protect them. Next on gps the waves of populism have come ashore. How does he survive . In france today it is macron who sits not his pop list challenges. Let me ask you how you intend to tackle this wave of populism that is sweeping through the western world. It seems to me that your answer has been to be a very aggressive reformer. It seemed like a lot of ideas that they had and that you are in favor of markets and won markets to operate is that what youre presenting, youre a better proponent of these ideas . I think we didnt have 20 years because of a certain way. You can see similar differences. I will say my strategy is very different. I have to restore competitiveness. Thats what i fixed was very important reform on label low, tax cuts and Economic Reforms on labor markets. Obviously it is very painful. It makes you less popular definitely. You decrease but its fine. France was the only country in europe that for so many years one of the highest unemployment rates. When you have something between 8 to 12 of your population unemployed it creates big destabilization. It means you have people without a job for years and years and some times decades. It creates big disorders. So the first is to make my country more competitive and to work very hard to do so. The second pillar is to prepare the future. Having much more investment and innovation this is critical if we want to be one of the leader of the upcoming world we have to work on industry of the future, new agriculture. The third pillar is about sovereignty. This is probably one of the main differences. Im not a believer in Global Markets. I want to decide for my people because im elected by them. I dont want to Global Market to decide for my people. For me these three pillars, building a new investment for the future and being more sovereign is the best answer to the nationalists and those who played with that. Why . I dont like to use the term p populist. I dont want to live with the exclustivety. Im with people. It provides a very compelling answer on the economic side. It has no answers to the cultural anxieties that are moving people. I think we have to restore in our history to be proud as people to be proud of our history and our culture and to explain that we have a dna. There is no Global People without any differences. Next, earlier in the week i toured a car factory with president macron and while we are there i asked him about frances economy. His attempts to reform it, the difficulties. That when we come back. Very good to see you. Please to have you. How are you, my friend . All week president macron has been touring around northern and eastern france, the areas of the country that were hardest hit by world war i and hardest hit by economics. I was with him on thursday as he toured in an area. With him was the chairman and ceo of the parent company. They announced a new line of vanz would be made adding 200 new jobs in the struggling region. He campaigned on a platform of frances economy. It is a difficult challenge. By most accounts he has delivered making deals with unions, weatherering months of of on again off again strikes and enduring a difficult climate. He promises to persist with the next round including Pension Reforms next year. After macrons tour he had to get back to work so we met in an office just off the factory floor. I think its the results of the dynamics of the industry because there is a big recovery and this is indeed the first result of our policy. We decided to make a lot of tax cuts for companies. We decided to decrease when invested in the country. We decided to reform in the label laws and label organization. We streamlined a lot of regulation. All of this regulation and taxation and thats why we destroyed so many jobs in the country. Whats happening now, this is the result of the reforms here at the beginning of this year is that theres recovering investment and employment. Here they decided to invest 1 billion in the country which is a big number. It is a version of very difficult neighborhood. They decided it was 450 million and to create at least 200 jobs. This is very important indeed. Thats why it is to accelerate this transition, to facilitate that training program. How to train and retrain people. And how to help this, my very aggressive policy. So many many french president s have talked about reform. Sent a letter to every frenchman talking about reform. He did some reforms and reversed them. Are you going to be able to actually conclude the reforms and stay with them even if there are more strikes and more problems . Absolutely. First because when i speak about laws and reform and i try to explain that this is in order to go to this final point its not something to repair the country but to build a new economy social and environmental port. Second, i passed some very important reforms, on taxation, labor. Some of the reform, we did it. It is on. Yet growth in france is not quite what you want. For sure. Whats left . Look, growth are not the results of the first. Some of the reform is best. Four, five, six months ago so its impossible. It would take i mean 18 to 24 months at least. Thats why i wanted to do all of the big reforms. I know that you need time to get results. Next on gps he tells us about probably the most important decision he has ever made to get married. With zero electoral experience and without the backing of a major party, he received 66 of the vote last year, becoming frances youngest leader since napoleon. His upstart Political Party swept the parliamentary elections. Since then his ratings have sunk. What makes him tick . Probably the most important decision you made in your life other than deciding to run for the presidency of france, you made when you were 16 years old. You fell in love with a woman who was your teacher who was 24 years older. When you look at it and think what you must have gone through, the difficulties with your family and her family and society at large, is that a powerful window into understanding you . Probably. Probably. Probably, she is much, much more bold and courageous than i am because she was 40. She has a life and it started different. I think the main merit is my wifes merit. For sure what i built at that time and what we built together is not to be upset by what people think about you. But when you convince and sincere about what you are doing, when you dont lie to yourself and to the other, you welcome something that was thought of as impossible. Definitely. When i ask people in france how you are doing, they say his poll ratings are very low now. Now do you deal with the fact that they have gone down a lot . Yes, i am not obsessed by that. You are not elected by polls and i have five yearss mandate. What i have to do in this current environment is to deliver. If thats totally true that my polls decreased because i passed very unpopular reforms and all my predecessors failed or decided not to deliver these reforms it. I do believe these reforms are a necessity for my country. They are a necessity for the future generation. What i have to do now is to be totally k lly dedicated to at t time energy of that and explain that to me people and thats how i can recover and i have to show the results in the coming coming reforms. My result is not to stop. My view is its new duty, my mission today, is to fix the country from an economic and social point of view. Built a new social model for france and europe. With new protection for people in this current environment in order to reduce inequalities. You are right, the situation today is less favorable than one year ago. Its not a big surprise to me, but you refer to my personal past and i spent many years without the respect of a lot of people. I spent many people with people i loved who didnt totally understand what i was doing. At the end because it was sincere and because i was precisely consistent with myself and never stopped, they recognize and they accepted. So i am personally and strongly pursued that french people will recognize and agree with the fact that we are doing our best for the country and we are serving our country for the future.
