5 30 a. M. Cal tile. And then the captain asked to climb higher because of storms. And nouw, family, of course, they are desperate for any sign of what may have happened to the plane. No american ss were on board. Almost all of the passengers were indonesian nationals. The ntsb is monitoring the situation, and of course, they are prepared to assist if asked. Despite a Massive International search effort, there is still no trace of the aircraft or the 239 people on board of mh370 which crashed in march. And now we go to the missing jet from surabaya where it took off en route to singapore, and now Andrew Stevens is just south of the Crisis Center, and what are we hearing from the authorities there . Well it is just after 1 00 in the morning, martin. There has not been much new information that i can the tell you about. And what i can say is that the search resuming at full force, there will be several vessels, and singapore is sending one aerial reconnaissance airline, and we dont know where the offer is going to be taken up yet, but the focus in the next few hours is going to be moving on to the search area, and we had the chief executive officer and the founder of airasia who arrived here a few hours ago and he is saying that the priority is being with the families of both the passengers and of course with the crew 155 passengers on board and plus a crew of seven, and that is where the focus is, and he is not speculating on what may or may not have happened to that plane. Lis listen to what Tony Fernandez had to say about his own personal reaction. We are devastated by what has happened. It is unbelievable. But we do not know what has happened yet so we will wait for the accident investigation when we find out what has happened. Our concern right now is for the relatives and the next oft kin, and nothing more important for us and for the crew ss and the family and the passenger families, and that we look after them and that is the priority at the moment. And just one little heart wrenching scene that we saw a half hour ago, martin, that i want to tell you about. Two girls came to the Crisis Center here behind me where information is given out to the relatives. They both had parents, both parents on the flight. They were in singapore, where they went to School Waiting for the parents to turn up. They were joining them for the new years celebrations in singapore, and we all know that the flight never arrived, and so they have come down here to surabaya, and being chaperoned by members of the school. They are not speaking but they looked like young teenager, and absolutely bewildered and shocked, and your heart went out to the girls who in one stroke may have lost both of their parent, each of them. Terrible stories, and that is just it. There were 155 passengers and 7 crew. Several more story ares are coming out. Thank you, Andrew Stevens, report g reporting are from surabaya where the aircraft originated from. We go the rene marsh, and our aviation correspondent, and what if anything is airasia saying about this . Well, it is a newer aircraft, martin. And with ee know that it was delivered october 2008 making it a little bit over six years old. As far as the fly ging time, we know it is more than 23,000 flight hours. So it is making some reps but at this point, it is a newer airplane. With we know as far as the a23 goes the Safety Record is pretty good when you consider the reps that the aircraft has made made. Oftentimes and you have heard it several times today referred to as the workhorse and it makes sense, because when you look at the big picture of how many reps this particular aircraft has made around the world, it is a lot lot. I mean, airbus, itself its own stat says that every two seconds somewhere around the world, an airbus is landing or taking off. That puts it in context. At this point, airbus is careful with the language and they are not dipping into the arena of speculation, and they are waiting to gather information and making it clear that they are ready and willing to work with the investigators once it moves to the investigative stage. We know that here in the United States the ntsb has the lines of communication open with the air airbus, and the french equivalent of the ntsb, and they are talking to the indonesian ss as well, and the the lines of communication is open, but the primary goal at this point is finding the wreckage because until that is done there is but so much to figure out without the wreckage. Martin. Rene that is a e heavily trafficked air corridor there, and im wondering about the o other flights in the region, and in that route, did anyone see or hear or report any problems . Right. We mentioned off of the top that the search, and the rescue is at a halt, but to the your point here that doesnt mean that everything is at a standstill. Investigators at this point, what they are wanting to do is to find out if there are pilots in the area who saw something that may be valuable information information, and are also referring to the radar. And they are looking at the different points that this aircraft hit. Looking at the flight path up to the point where they lost it. With that data they are able to crunch some number and figure out things like how fast this plane was potentially going, and the roughly altitude was going, and with the information they have currently, they can pull out some data. However, they can go but so far until they find the wreckage. Of course all of us felt the same drop in the stomach of not again and we harken back to m mh370, but are there differences here than the initial reporting of mh370 . Yes, there are differences. In our reporting here, what with we are hearing is roughly 20 minutes or so before indonesia alerted airasia that they lost all contact with the flight. Much longer as it relates to Malaysia Flight mh370 and also in that flight there were so many things that could not be explained. In this case we heard from the pilot that there was bad weather, and the pilot wanted to change course a little bit and go up in altitude. So we know what was going on in the mind of the pilot, whereas with flight 370, there was a big mystery, and we knew that they had signed off, but we the did not hear any word of any issues in the cockpits, and that is the major difference here. Rene marsh, thank you for the insights. And we will turn to the cnn analyst, miles obrien, and also joined by our aviation correspondent richard quest. And we know richard well maybe we dont know but it has been reported that there were he i have storms in the area, when the plane was flying and missing, and some who suggest it was not that ba. He there are report s thats that he wanted to climb over a heavy storm, so we dont know, but what was going on . Well, he wanted to climb from 32,000 to 38,000 feet to get over the heavy storms. From what the pilots are saying a what is online at the moment it looks as though the air speed of the aircraft was low, dang can rousely low at this time. What one a23 pilot told me a that a climb of that altitude particularly a 6,000foot climb has to be done with a measure of increased measure of safety on the speed side because the window or the precise language is en vevelope is narrower and narrower because of the climb. And so we have the request, and the climb and the window coalescing as the pilot lost contact. And this is the for a pilot, the interconvergence zone and is it common for pilots to fly through this area to have common problems . Well, it is common to have these common storms in that area, but it is not advised for a flight crew to try to penetrate any thunderstorm for that matter. And so if in fact they were using the onboard radar system to try to find a gap in the convective activity and the lighter parts of the storm, if you will to tread through, you will run into a phenomena called radar shadowing which mean ss the first line of storms, and the gap, but it does not show you the imbedded storm behind it. So you may think that you can fly into the gap, and think that you are making your way behind it, but it is a sucker hole and you are stuck inside of a dead end and you have to penetrate the bad storms. This is exactly what air france 447 flew into and intertropical convergence storm, and embedded thunderstorm and then what happened is the tubes were impeded, and that caused the the crash. And so i dont want to make a assumption but is the scenario that happened with air france may have are repeated itself . Well, we dont know but with the air france 447, as miles remines it it went through the ipz, and all of that with the tubes, that was the scenario and how the pilots responded to the situation that ultimately doomed the aircraft. This is why you will hear people like myself say that weather on its own does not bring down the plane. And that means that the weather is not go g toing to cause the disintegration of the aircraft, and the wing is not going to fall off because it is going through a thunderstorm and what happens is a scenario is created that is much more challenging for the pilots to fly, and here is a moderately experienced captain, 6,000 hour shgs, and reasonably experienced first officer 2,000 officers and by no means the upper end of experience but you have a scenario being created. We dont know. And let me stop there, because at this point, any further comment just literally takes us into a realm that is pure unadulterated speculation. Thank you, richard. And miles, before i i let yo go no emergency beacon, and why . Well the emergency locater transmitter is designed to start to emit a frequency on impact in this scenario, but if it is submerged, you wont hear it. So once again, with reat the point where we ask why dont we have the capability of knowing what is going on with these aircraft in the air. And why dont i have why dont we have the capability of the realtime streaming capability and the airlines have been resisting it because of the cost but right now, we would have much more information of what has happened. And richard, i understand that we will be talking to you throughout the hour, ap than shgs and thank you both. We are will find out how the u. S. Is responding to the missing plane just after this. Hey guys. Guys pillsbury cinnamon rolls, with cinnabon cinnamon, are an irresistable sunday morning idea. Nothing calls them to the table faster. Make breakfast pop suffering from the flu is a really big deal. With aches, fever and chills theres no such thing as a little flu. So why treat it like its a little cold . Theres something that works differently than overthecounter remedies. Attack the flu virus at its source with prescription tamiflu. And call your doctor right away. Tamiflu is fda approved to treat the flu in people 2 weeks and older whose flu symptoms started within the last two days. Before taking tamiflu tell your doctor if youre pregnant, nursing, have Serious Health conditions, or take other medicines. If you develop an allergic reaction, a severe rash, or signs of unusual behavior stop taking tamiflu and call your doctor immediately. Children and adolescents in particular may be at an increased risk of seizures confusion or abnormal behavior. The most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting. Ask your doctor about tamiflu and attack the flu virus at its source. We are continuing the coverage of a missing airasia passenger jet. This is flight 8501 that left indonesia at 5 30 local time bound for singapore. It had 18 children and a crew of 7 with 162 total on board. The more intensive efforts for the search have to break until untilbreakuntil day untiluntil day break. And now joining us is Cnn International meteorologist tom slater from the cnn weather center. Let me ask you this, what was the weather conditions, tom at the time this happened . Well martin for most of the time at cnn, im at Cnn International, and this is a region of the world that we have been covering extensively almost everyday since the beginning of december, and the reason for this, as you look across the globe here as it is spinning here, and we are watching this and i have heard you say this, intertropical convergence zone and since the beginning of the month, there is an unprecedented emergencies here and you can see this indonesia, and Southeast Asia and Southern India where sri lanka has been dealing with problem, and it is unprecedented what we are seeing. This time of the year the monsoonal rains drop and come southward and the pilots are dealing with what is already considered a rough area to fly through, and in this year and this month in particular, we are seeing the rainfall in blue, and from mozambique to sri lanka to the borders of malaysia, we have layers being affected. In mozambique we have one problem, but in sri lanka, we had a mudslide that buried over 300 people. And more than 1 Million People have been evacuated between thailand and malaysia. And the provinces there and the emergencies there are incredible because they cannot get enough crews to take the people e that need to be evacuated to the shelters and not even enough shelters. But this is the region of concern here because in the area and that zone at this time of the year, you will have the air masses from the northeast and the south, and where they meet in to a e region, the thunderstorms develop rapidly, and we just dont know if the pilot went into the thunderhead or if he was trying to maneuver here, and what we are finding is the convergence, it is the height s heights. When they get into the ice tops, it is the icing that is a problem. And so what we know and this is Realtime Data of when the plane was missing. You can see the large thunderstorm here avoiding the draft s drafts and the turbulence around the larger thunderstorm trying to get the act together in some clearing before they find themselves in the middle of another thunderstorm. And all of these are racing from west to east across the region, and we know that the weather was bad and the pilots watch it on a day ly and nightly event, and we will share more information with you in a little bit. It is fascinating, tom. What is the condition going to be like when the researchers arrive . We believe that with the warm waters over to the java sea, they should have good visibility but where the thunderstorms will develop throughout the day are almost impossible to say, so we will an eye on that. Thank you, tom. We appreciate your insights. And we are joined by peter goels, who is a former ntsb official, and what kind of help could the u. S. Provide at this time . Well, the indonesia ns know sindonesians know the capabilities of the ntsb and it is not likely that they will have a role here in this investigation. It is a french manufactured plane, and no american citizens on board, so that the ntsb will be a Technical Support role if requested by indonesia. But the indonesians will be reaching out to the malaysians and the french and the aus australians perhaps to e help them to investigate this tragedy. And once again, it seems that we are looking at the aircraft disaster n which there was no distress call or signal and why would that happen . Well, part of it is that the pilots are trained to fly their aircraft first when they are in a tough situation. When they are in an unusual situation, they are flying firgts andfirst and navigating second and communicating third. As reported previously it is inexcusable that we are not tracking the aircraft that have significant transoceanic flights on a closer basis sick. The search and the rescue people need to be going out before dawn to a targeted area. If they knew where they were headed they will find it quickly, but they need more help. We said it before but we went through the nightmare with mh mh370, and they still continue to try to locate that aircraft. Of course it happened in a beginning part of the day in that part of the world and searched for 12 hour and found nothing. Does that suggest something . Well, it suggests that the initial information that the indonesians had was fairly incomplete. Now, they have had a full 24 hours to gather all of the radar data from the sources, and they should be able to put it together along with the satellite data and have a more precise location on are where to target the search. Hopefully that has taken place. Peter goelz, thank you. Thank you, martin. And we will get perspective of a pilot who has flown that route ahead. Well its only 100 calories, so youll be ready for that dress uhhuh. You dont love the dress . I love my sister. 40 flavors. 100 calories or less. Is there such a thing as a sure thing in business . Some say buy gold. Others say buy soybeans. I say, buy comcast business internet. Unlike internet providers that slow down when traffic picks up, you get speed you can rely on. Its a safe bet. Like a goldplated soybean. Reliably fast internet starts at 69. 95 a month. Comcast business. Built for business. Hello, im Martin Savidge, and we continue to follow the developments in the missing airasia flight 8501. And the flight never arrived from surabaya to singapore. And erin mcpike, i assume that the administration has been following it closely . Yes, a that is right, martin. President obama has been briefed when he was out to dinner at the white house, and he says they will continue to monitor this situation, and as of yet, there are no u. S. Assets designated. We did get this official statement says that the indonesians and singaporeans are leading the investigation, and we will standby and lend assistance in any way that is helpful. And we have confirmed that there were no u. S. Passports involved in the flight. The other thing that we would point out though is that in the case of the mh370 after that went miss, and mh317 was shot down over ukraine, those were both boeing aircraft that was an american aircraft and so the ntsb was involved in the Technical Support. And in this case, the airbus is a French Company manufacturer. And the u. S. Has be asked first before they can begin to contribute assets and help in the search, martin. What about the u. S. Military to provide help with vessels in the search . As far as we know as of jet, no ask made. It is the same for any u. S. Assets whether it is the military or the other Technical Support, because the u. S. Has to be asked first. In the case of the financial s a assistance, the white house would have to sign off for that, but if the ntsb would be asked to help in the search they could happen. And now we are joined by former pilot les abend and alastar rosenshein. You have flown that route, ala sshgss alastar, and what can you tell us . Well, there are times when you have to fly around the weather, but maybe not the case because the pilots had asked to not only deviate, but to climb up. And the idea of climbing up is to go over the thunderstorms, and to remain visually in contact with the worst weather, because it could be embedded with the use of radar which could be u enough to pick your way around and i am looking at the map on the screen, and these are quite large. And to divert, it would have to be quite large. And there are some massive storms. And les, you have flown through some storms in your travels as pilot, and so is some of this the plane guided from the cockpit as op poesposed to guided from the ground . Well, let me quality part of the question, we dont fly through thunderstorms, a hand is not part of the objective. So in that regard, we try to avoid them to the best of our knowledge, as my pilot colleague alastair has commented about. It may have been a scattered area or embedded area of thunderstorms that they i tried to deviate around, and we yes, we do have control of the airplane, and nobody on the ground can control the airplane. We use autopilot in a heading select, and we will turn to the heading that the radar will select that will take us out of the worst, and the Industry Standard is 20 miles away from the storm to prevent turbulence and all of the bad things associated with it. And now, alastair has flown in that specific area and which have flown in the tropical interconvergence zone in south america, and looking at the intense standards, not as intense as this, but the storms they tend to park in the same areas, and the pilots can predict it before they take off. It is a dynamic environment, but we have the ability to use the radar to the fullest extent and to move around it, and in deference to the climb, we are all speculating here. Maybe he wanted a better ride for the passengers and very often go ging to a higher altitude is what it means, and it does not mean that the aircraft is in trouble. And what about the Lightning Strike on an aircraft, and is it possible that the lightning can damage the aircraft to make it so it can fly . No modern aircraft have a system called bonding is where every piece of metal is bonded and it is where it will pass through on one side to the other way on the ground and continue on to another cloud and not doing damage and then you have entry and can exit can happen, but it is an irritation but it does require a check to make sure there are no further damages, and to look at the equipment to make sure that another strike can be dedetected but that is not the main worry because turbulence and lightning is the main factor. And extremely heavy rain, you can get one engine or two en engines flaming out due to the weight of the water. And also to make communications with the mayday call as you try to restart the engine itself. So these are extreme conditions, the thunderstorms. As my colleague in the studio said it is to avoid them at all times and go around them at all times, but one does occasionally get caught in them, and i cant tell you one pilot who has not gone through them at one point, and not because of lack of judgment or because there is no other way to get around them, but it may have been something that the pilots may have confronted. Thank you u, alastair and les abend is going to stay with us. This is cnn breaking news. Hello, everyone im Martin Savidge and we will bring you up to date on the breaking news a. Passenger jet carrying 162 people has gone down and miss ging in Southeast Asia. This is what we know. The official search at sea has been suspended because of darkness. It is middle of the night local time there, and the middle of the area is a busy shipping channel, and some of the ships are combing the area for the airasia 8501. But more intensive efforts are on hold until daybreak which is several hours away. The airbus a2300 left indonesia 5 30 a. M. Local time bound for singapore. And the Indonesia Air Traffic Control say that the pilot requested to climb because of storms. Almost the entire time the plane is e over water eover water. The family is desperate for what happened. Almost all of the passengers were indonesian nationals. There were no americans on. The u. S. Is available for assistance if that request comes in. This is ten months after malaysian flight hm370 is still ongoing ark and there is no trace of that aircraft or the 239 people on board. And rosa is joining us now and you are tracking the social media, and i can imagine what people are saying regarding this flight. Well, thoughts and prayers are pouring in from all over the world in every corner. People want to express thoughts because of the reminder of mh360 and people say, i cant believe we lost another a plane in this day and age. We are seeing a number of things marty, but people are going to social media to assimilate information and hopefully to help. I want to show you this Statement Released by the singapore minister of defense, because this is some of the assets that he hopes to help with. He is saying in the latest post rs valor and rs supreme will be setting sail, and they will take a day to reach the search and rescue area a and they have already set sail. The minister of singapore saying, we have offered the assets. And the malaysian president saying that he has called the president and offered full support in search and rescue can efforts. This is important, asia air is using Facebook Page as a tool. They are posting information for the families to go to the Facebook Page and gain useful information such as a phone number to call and get information information, and another quick update, search and rescue operations are being updated an planned. It gives the family members a sense of what is going on and what is being done to look for their loved ones. Take a look at the airasia logo because it is going from red to gray. It is more of a change of color, but it is a change of mood as the family sies are hoping that the loved ones are safe. Yes. Rosa flores, thank you very much for monitoring the social media on this story. Thanks. We are following other breaking news, Italian Firefighters are trying to put out a fire on the ferry off of the coast of greece. One pas sensenger said it was like the titan nick and people are dying of smoke and we are joined ded by phone by barbie nadu. We know that 165 people have been rescued, but more than 300 are on the burning ferry. They reported the ferry on fire local time at 5 00 a. M. And that is 14 hours ago. And so these people have been in various states of panic trying to to get off of the ship. Many of the lifeboat ss were able to be deployed, but then there was a blackout on the ship and so many of the arms to lower the lifeboats were not able to be lowered. Many of the rescues were taken by helicopter. And the mediterranean is not a difficult can sea, but it is extremely windy period of time and so it is ham p perring the rescue operations and the sheer amount of smoke to hamper visibility. It is off of the coast of albania, and after the struggle to high seas to the tugboat that is going to try to tow to albania, and they are waiting for clearance to make landfall closest to the port 13 miles away and that is a long way to travel with a burning ship. Martin. You are in italy, correct . Yes, that is right. And i wanted to find out, what are we hearing how the captain and the crew have been handling this because tragically the news on that front has not been good re recently. That is exactly right. And the kos a ta concord costa ta concordia the crew just left but this is an entire lyly different message, and the italian media is making the point that the captains of italy do know how to handle a maritime emerge emergency. So we wont have a repeat of the coesta concordia, and so they are trying to bring this ship into safe harbor martin. Thank you, barbie nadu. We will have more on the missing aircraft in indonesia next. The holidays in a germanengineered volkswagen. Like the sporty, advanced new jetta. And the 2015 motor trend car of the year allnew golf. And that jet had 162 people on board including 18 children and 7 crew. Ships are combing the waters in that area for debris from the plane. And at daybreak ships and helicopters will be search pog tr plane. Heavy storms had been reported in the area of the jet. Reported in the area Officials Say the pilot had asked to fly at higher altitude because of the weather. This comes ten months after Malaysian Airlines flight vanished on the bay to beijing with 200 people on board. Lets bring in the Inspector General for the department of transportation. They had im wondering what does that suggest to you in your Expert Opinion . Well my opinion is it suggests they were tracking their own on board weather required and probably had received the vars pilot warnings and maybe communication from other pilots that the weather in that area was particularly awful. When we look at the weather screens now, the screen shots from what the weather was like its a solid sea of red. In every case Something Else went wrong also, and maybe two or three things. In most cases like that, you have bad weather compounded by a mechanical issue and then compounded by a pilot Decision Making mistake, and that was a deadly combination in the accidents that i worked with bad weather. Weve heard from other pilots, and weve spoken to them that they absolutely aor void those storm systems if possible. At least the thunder cell. Absolutely. The case of the United States accidents where they had gone into very severe thunderstorms, the ntsb was extremely critical of the Decision Making and in fact some of the accidents led to more stringent rules. They have their own role in helping to forecast. It will be interesting and very important in the days to come to see what this airline did to help give guidance to its pilots and if they had their own in house meteorologists and weather reporting services. Once again, we an aircraft that diswapz no distress call. Apparently no real message from the cockpit drew or perhaps even the aircraft itself. So much that was criticized after mh 370, its been ten months. Is that too short a time frame to expect change . Unfortunately it is when you are talking about governments. The crash in the United States has taken years or decades to get changed, and i think the consensus is everyone knows it needs to be done but theres always a specter of the expense that hangs overhead the retro fitting aircraft thats always a big issue. Then which system to adopt. While others have said weve got to do something, to be searching for black boxes in the bottom of the ocean when you can easily stream the data and there are systems to do that so you dont have to do these searches with search lights and, you know impossible conditions, everyone agrees it has to change, but its going to have to be a government that starts it and it would be nice if it was ours but ikao will probably have to push. Mary thanks very much as always. I understand we have an air Traffic Control person on the phone. That will be after the break. Ring ring progresso i cant believe im eating bacon and rich creamy cheese before my sisters wedding well its only 100 calories, so youll be ready for that dress uhhuh. You dont love the dress . As weve been talking about, air Traffic Control right now may be the initial guidance and help for any of those rescue efforts, no . Now im told that phillip dropped off the line. We will continue to try to get back in touch with him to talk about how air Traffic Control could help with the ongoing search efforts. Les, you still there with me . Les . Martin savage here. I can hear you if you can hear me. Lets continue my conversation on air now regarding what we know of this particular aircraft. Let me start you off with the airbus a320 200 version. Pretty well known, petition well flown aircraft correct . Its a reliable airplane. Its been in existence for many years. Decades really. Its got good systems on it. We use it all here in the u. S. Its a much lighter airplane than what weve been familiar with in previous reports with regarding the Malaysian Airline 370 triple boeing 7. This airplane the a320200 is about 170,000 pounds at max gross takeoff weight. What that means turbulence can affect this airplane more. Its not as flexible perhaps as a boeing 777. It is still an Aluminum Structure wing but once again, were speculating. We dont know if turbulence or an encounter with a thunderstorm is necessarily the situation. What the pilots did with regard to altitude changes or requesting that particular altitude change may have just been for choppy air. He may have been looking at his radar. Both pilots looking at the radar trying to avoid that newscast where i situation. All right. Les, im going to ask you to stand by as we continue to follow things. Theyre fluid here. In the meantime well start at the top of the hour. Hello. Im Martin Savage in for frederic wra whitfield, and lets bring you uptodate on what this conversation is all about. A passenger jet carrying 162 people is now missing in Southeast Asia. Here is what we know at the moment. The official search at sea has been suspended for air asia 8501 because of darkness. It is the middle of the night. Their local time. The area is a very busy shipping channel, though, and some ship that is are in that area continue to comb the waters off of indonesia, but a full blown search is now on hold until daylight returns to that area and that is still some hours off. The airbus a 32200 left indonesia and is bound for singapore. It is want a long flight. Officials say at one point the pilot asked to climb to a higher altitude apparently to avoid heavy storms. The plane disappeared from radar while flying at around 38,000 feet and almost the entire flight was to be conducted over water. Families as you can only begin to imagine, are desperate for any sign of what may have happened to this plane. There were no americans on board, but the ntsb is monitoring the wags situation from her
