And that curve has also started up again, which is really troubling. And that probably means, unfortunately, that we may start now to see also an increase in the number of deaths each day. Increase in the number of deaths each day. The president , though, with a completely different story. A light at the end of the tunnel is near. We are rounding the turn. I say that all the time. Some of the media doesnt like hearing it. But i say it all the time. Were rounding that turn. Well, he does say that all the time. In fact, hes been saying were rounding the turn for months. It hasnt been true yet. More than 800 new deaths recorded yesterday, a steady count of lives lost for months and months and now you heard the nih director say is going to keep going up. Multiple states are now reporting record hospitalizations. And yet these are the images of the president s events today. On the left, seniors packed inside a room. Two indoor rallies this afternoon, and one happening right now. By the way, tied to his minnesota rally two people tied to that according to the Minnesota Department of health are now in the hospital. But the white house, as a time when the nation needs clear direction on the stop of the disease, is still spreading very mixed messages. This is ivanka trumps rally today, socially distanced, temperature checks. The audience told they had to wear masks and keep them on. Which is funny, because its something that ivanka did not do, as you see in the first debate, between her father and joe biden. Something she usually does not do in his presence. We can assume the reason, no one close to President Trump crosses him publicly, even on this crucial issue of masks, even as he claims that 85 people of who wear masks get coronavirus, which sin correct. The problem is, his overall message about masks is resonating with his supporters, as we found out tonight. Do you think hes providing Accurate Information when it comes to masks . Yeah, 100 . Do you believe the president what he says about masks . I believe the president has done a good job combatting the covid19 virus. Which is why one of his top allies, chris christie, is sounding the alarm, begging the people to be honest with the American People. I think we need to be honest with the American People and just say directly to them that we dont know everything we need to know about this disease at this point, george. But what we do know is, that masks can certainly help. We do know that. Instead, the president paints this picture of rounding the corner, even as were hitting another coronavirus peak and hospitalizations are rising and deaths are going up. The case numbers continue to rise, and that confusing message that is detached from reality is causing some of trumps supporters now to actually turn. Hes still dishonest about it. Its clear his message on the pandemic is resonating with the people behind you. Reporter erin, theres no doubt about that. You know, basically everything the president says on any topic, but especially the coronavirus pandemic, resonates in a big way with all of his supporters. They literally believe every single thing he says. And in many cases, when youre having conversations with the folks that attend these rallies, its almost like youre living in an alternative reality. Yes, they believe the coronavirus exists, but they dont believe its that big of a threat. They compare it to the flu. Of course, way more people died of coronavirus than have ever died of the flu in a given year. They also believe that some of these medications that the president has touted, like hydroxychloroquine, is completely safe and effective for treating coronavirus. And this latest statistic that the president has been touting that 85 of people who wear masks are at risk for contracting coronavirus. We also know that is just not true. Its not just that they believe it, theyre also practicing this message that the president is sending out. As is evidenced behind me. As is evidence every single one of these rallies that we covered and have been to, the lions share of people here are not wearing masks. Sometime tomorrow, well pass the 1 million case mark for october. So in 17 days, we will have added another million cases. Just to give you some perspective, it took 100 days for us to get to the first million positive cases. And now every 17 days. So were clearly not rounding the corner. When you tell your followers that masks arent important or were just about there and everything is over and you bring together these super spreader events, you prolong the agony for the country. And the responsible thing to do is to tell the country what they need to do to get through this safely until we have a vaccine. The good news is that im pretty sure were going to have a vaccine in the near term. And then well start giving good news when we Start Talking about nightly counts of new patients vaccinated. Comes in at 33 behind 36, behind us are turkey, russia and iran. Russias situation is record cases daily. Irans situation is record deaths daily. One of the things thats going on right now is there is a declaration of falsehood that is spreading the idea that we should allow this virus to spread wildly among us. That is exceedingly dangerous and very bad science, so were countering that with the john snow declaration that says just the opposite, that we need to wear masks and we need the physical distancing, and we need to protect everyone in our population, and wait for this vaccines there are many vaccines that are coming and showing fruition, and we should hang on and continue as in that mode. Dr. Reiner, today ivanka trump held an event that looked very different than those held by her father. I should note, when shes been with him at the last debate, she didnt mask. But this, when she held an event was different, social distancing, temperature checks, people told to keep their masks on. The opposite of what we get at a trump rally. Shes cheerily being trying to appeal to a different audience, a different voter, than her father. But he desperately needs those voters, right . Reasonable republicans. Is it going to work . If she was doing something meaningful as a senior policy advisor to the president of the United States, she would have prevented him from hosting the giant unmasked event in the rose garden. She would have prevented him from holding rally after rally this summer. She would have urged him to urge the country to wear a mask. Im totally unimpressed with her madefor social media photoopes. The cdc is saying pull back from those gatherings with your family and saying smaus household gatherings are helping to drive the rise in cases, the surge were seeing. Do americans really realize this, how significant those small decisions are . But i think the messaging that he has right now is really targeted at people who are sort of on the fence, those people that hes trying to pull over, you know, people who had voted for trump last time that hes trying to get back to come back to the democratic party, or republican women in particular, suburban women who typically dont vote democratic but are thinking about joe biden as president and hes trying to speak directly to them, not necessarily the people who have strong opinions about covid already know who theyre voting for on both sides. The people who have strong opinions about state of the country in terms of being united already know who theyre voting for. But for somebody who is thinking, maybe im going im a republican and going to vote for joe biden, these are two messages that are really going to resonate with them. Biden also argued that, you know, picking up trumps Coronavirus Response saying that americans reason obamacare will lose their insurance if Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed as the Supreme Court nominee, which polls have come out, that is not popular. People dont want that to happen. Heres the argument. This pandemic isnt enough for President Trump. On top of that, hes still trying to take away your health care. Getting rid of obamacare is why theyre racing to get this nominee through the Supreme Court. He wants to get rid of obamacare in its entirety. This nominee has made that incredibly clear, as well. So michael, look, the polls do show that that is getting rid of obamacare is not popular. Sit actually going to translate into votes for biden . I think that it could. Ive always believed this is one of the strongest arrows that he has in his quiver, is to make the argument that the only way that the insurance models can take care of those with preexisting conditions is if everybody buys into the insurance pool. And that castigated individual mandate, thats what its all about. Its about personal responsibility and the idea that we all buy in so that the young invincibles are making up that gap which pays for the people with preexisting condition. But they dont articulate it that way and im never sure why. The biden ticket will probably do that for the next two weeks. Everyone is wondering how those town halls did last night, whether you were a trump supporter or wanted to see the theater, there was this buildup that people were going to watch trump. But when you look at the actual ratings, joe biden outrated donald trump. His town hall on abc, just aired on abc, 14. 1 million viewers, trumps town hall, aired on nbc, msnbc, and cnbc, 13. 1 million, so trump beat by a million. So i just want to say, trump views tv ratings as crucial. Hes said the nielsen ratings are much more important than the polls, that it was ratings, not polls that matter. This time obviously its a totally different outcome if you take trumps word for it. Yeah. Live by the ratings, die by the ratings if youre donald trump. I was pleasantly surprised by this, not for any partisan reasons, but just for the fact that if you looked at the two different styles of these men, theyre just substantively very, very different. And i honestly thought if you were to ask me, i would have said people would have watch the trump show over the biden show, because basically, trump had broken our brains. People now will get bored with, you know, with somebody speaking at length and in depth the way that joe biden does. I mean, you have the Trump Campaign comparing him, they thought unfavorably to mr. Rogers, who is beloved. But i think that was a welcome surprise. I agree. I think it was a surprise, and im sure its one that took the president s breath away, given he is the one who has said this so many times, right . The ultimate poll, ratings. Im just reading off quotes. All you have to do is look at your ratings to know who will win. Michael, i want to ask you about something. Cspans Steve Sculley, he was going to be moderating the second debate before it was canceled. He asks, should i respond to trump after trump attacked him and said he would not be a fair moderator. To go to Anthony Scaramucci about that if youre a debate moderator would not be appropriate. Michael, youre friends with him. What happened here . Well, its not hard at all. To quote lloyd benson, i know Steve Sculley, and hes a friend of mine. He made a mistake. He knows he made a mistake. The mistake he made, i think, sort of dwarfed the underlying conduct. If he had simply said, yes, i reached out for scaramucci because i was panicked and i wasnt sure how to handle the wrath that i was incurring from the president of the United States, i dont think we would be discussing this. Im not for professional death sentences, especially in this case, because Steve Sculley has a 30year record of being very measured, very down the middle. Anyone who has watched him on cspan, anyone who, as i have, has appeared multiple times on his program, know the way that he runs his professional life. I would rather judge him by that standard than just an errant direct message. He would be the first to tell you he made a mistake, but he should be back at some point in the future. Right. I just told you. You told me, but what you tell me doesnt necessarily make it fact, i hate to say that. I know nothing about it. I do know they are very much against pedophilia. They fight it very hard. Just this week, you retweeted to your 87 million followers a conspeary theory that joe biden orchestrated to have s. E. A. L. We have crazies on the right and left and taking his word as goes pel gospel. A lot of people are going to believe him and it gets to a point where its more than politically dangerous. It shouldnt be a retweet. He know twhas happen s what hap. He could go see the pictures that we have at cia in a file cabinet. Its one of those things where, you know, as someone who has made mistakes on twitter, the president shouldnt be doing something of that scale. Part of that exchange i played was the part about qanon. He has said in the past he understands qanon supporters like me very much and they love america. According to reporting from the atlantic, the president has promoted twitter accounts that reference qanon more than 200 times. Do you believe President Trump when he says he doesnt know what qanon is . The most i know is that they claim to be a right wing group, and i know people who have gone to their spots as keynote speakers and said they will never go back because they have some bizarre things going on. I dont know what the president knows about him and i have never spoken to the president about qanon. Ive heard Different Things from different sides. Im not going to associate with them. If theyre breaking up pedophilia rings, thats awesome. But i dont know what the president knows about them, and it just seems like a bizarre because these are guys saying i mean, part of the conspiracy, the guys on the bin laden raid can joke about we know what we did, we saw it. Few people that have seen it, but then it gets into the conspiracy that somehow because Vice President joe biden sent s. E. A. L. Team six, that they shot down s. E. A. L. Team six to silence the group. The group that got shot down was months later, not one guy that died there, albeit some of the best fighters ever, none were on the bin laden raid, but they were real people and their kids are still missing their fathers. He made some comments here saying they just want to hug her and thats how it happened and they also said this. They come within an inch of my face sometimes. They want to hug and kiss me. And they do. And frankly, im not telling them to back up. Im not doing it. But i did say its like you know, obviously its dangerous. Its a dangerous thing if you go by the covid thing. Of course, he specifically said military or Law Enforcement could have infected hope hicks. I mean, look, veterans, active Duty Service Members are a part of his base, 60 of them voted for him in 2016. Just for your feel out there, do you feel that support is slipping or not . I know that most of the men and women with whom i served are conservative leaning. If someone wants to get political, my advice is to keep gold star families out of it. Dont blame gold star kids for something that may have happened when people arent 100 sure how this virus is spread. The New York Post claimed it obtained smoking gun emails about hunter biden and ukraine. The post has said it obtained the emails through two trump confidants, Rudy Giuliani, and steve bannon. Evan, what more are you learning here . Reporter were learning that the fbi is lead thing investigation, which is looking into whether this Russian Disinformation Campaign that has been targeting joe bidens campaign, spreading this idea that he was part of some corrupt business ties of his son, who was serving on the board of a Ukrainian Energy Company Called burisma, that somehow this involved corruption of joe biden. Thats what the russians have been trying to spread. And whether that is now connected to this new set of emails, alleged emails, that have been published by the New York Post. Now, these are emails that allegedly show hunter biden trying to monetize and trying to use his ties, his fathers position obviously in the Obama Administration to make money. And so that is what the fbi is now taking a look at, to see whether all of these things are connected. The Washington Post is now reporting, erin, that the president himself and the white house were warned that Rudy Giuliani was essentially being used by the russians and by people connected to the russians in ukraine to try to traffic in some of these conspiracies that the russians are trying to use. And all along, everyone was expecting that some of this information was going to come in october, and right on schedule, it has arrived. It has. And theres a big clump of stuff they talk about, everything from the sorted, sort of whatever porn stuff thats on the computer to these emails. A giant hay stack is the point im making and within it some needles. One of the articles claim there iss an email that alleges there was a 2015 meeting between joe biden and an executive for burisma where hunter biden was on the board. So the Biden Campaign said it went through the former Vice President s schedules and found no official meeting. Biden said hes never spoken to his son about his overseas business dealings. But an email like this, you know, if its real, could be more significant. So how do they know whether these needles are significant, or whether these are the russian disinformation put into the haystack . Right, exactly. This is very classic russian disinformation tactics, which is to mix in things that look legitimate and maybe even are legitimate with things that are fake. So what well see is more releases from the New York Post and from other outlets, i suppose. We do know that the trajectory of this is this, that in april of 2019, this laptop is dropped off at this Computer Repair store in delaware. In guess, somehow the fbi takes control of it. Were not really clear from the Computer Store owner exactly how the fbi knew about the existence of this. And then fast forward to this summer, suddenly this comes into the hands of Rudy Giuliani and steve bannon is also involved in it. So thats one of the things raising all the red flags as to whether or not any of this is real and how it came to be in the hands of the president s aattorney. All right. Thank you very much, evan. To hear the story of this laptop, we know that the way this information is getting out is through steve bannon and Rudy Giuliani. How much does the source matter here . Well, Source Matters a lot. And the timing matters a lot. And to me, this is just classic textbook soviet russian trade craft at work. The russians have analyzed the target. They understand that the president and his enablers crave dirt on Vice President biden, whether its real or contrived, it doesnt matter to them. So all of a sudden 2 1 2 weeks before the selection, this laptop appears somehow, and emails on it without any meta data. Its all very curious. So here you have a willing target and the russians, who are very so fist kalted about how to exploit sophisticated about how to exploit a willing target is what is at work here. So when you try to figure out the specifics of whether that meeting email, for example, is real in the midst of this, do you think stuff like that could have been planted in there and be completely fake . I do. I think the emails could be contrived, particularly since, as i understand it from what i have read, they appear without any meta data. That is from, to, any technical data. At least immediately evident. Now, if this computer is in the hands of the fbi, they have obviously excellent sophisticated technical and analytic capabilities and they will bible to sort it out whether this is genuine or not. Its all pretty curious, given 2 1 2 weeks out from the election. I general john kelly told friends. Hes the most flawed person i have ever met in my life.
