Sanders. Standing next to each other but far apart on policy. One adviser to biden summing it up this way saying there is no need to try and draw contrast with senator sanders the contrast couldnt be more obvious or stark. And the big question is how is plays out tonight. Because the message from the Progressive Left from the sanders wing of the party is loud and clear. Im with bernie on medicare for all. I believe medicare for all is the way to do that. Private insurance is not working for tens of millions of americans. Thats one of the rallying calls for the far left. Will joe biden bend or stand sfrong for the moderate views. Kyung lah is outfront tonight at the site of the debate. You have new information how joe biden is preparing in the final moments. Reporter erin im standing in the spin room and the latest information in the background briefing from biden aides that joe biden does plan to sort of forge his own path. He is not planning on coming out to the spin room after the debate. Most of the others are. That is the latest that we are hearing. We do understand that joe biden did watch last nights debate, that he did take notes. And that he is prepared to defend his record, including the questions of whether the party needs a generational change, whether he is up to date on his perspective on race, but, again, erin, he is going to very much forge his own path. He is the front runner says he is going to remain focused if attacked say aides he realizes he gets more time to rebut time they say theyre willing to take, erin. Kyung, thats joe biden and obviously all eyes on bide. Process. But a lot of others getting time ton on stage and a lot of focus what have you learned about that. Bernie sanders, a lot of questions how he responds, what hes told publicly is that he isnt practicing mock debates. He prefers to speak about policy. He doepts like that scripted debate format. As far as pete buttigieg, were told anyway didnt do practicing where there are nine people standing right next to him. That he was practicing in other ways. And we did hear from a Kamala Harris, her camp. They sayy he she has been doing debate prep. We dont have details about that. But she did watch the debate last night and did take note and they are making slight adjustment because of the format not the content is changed in what she presents. They are going to have to be more assertive on the issues that she feels strongly about. They say that theyre looking forward to jumping in when needed. Thank you very much, kyung. Now mark preston senior political analyst. Karen donne one of the senior debate prech specialtyist prepared Hillary Clinton for the 2016 debates and president obama for debates as well. And david gergen of course who served as adviser to four president s. Mark last night the front runter not on the stage but tonight he is. In the middle there is 10 you got to share it. But pricingly no one went after him last night. It was an absence. Will things be different tonight. I think so. And i think because ofway we saw happen last night its going to need into what with we see happen tonight specifically the debate got off slow. Wasnt much of a debate more interview type questions. The candidates then decided to bring it upon themselves to debate one another. And i think that youre going to see the ten tonight or at least the lower half of the ten say i need to get in and get in early and as kyung lah said about how they are changing strategy and how to deal with the debates i i was hearing that in realtime saying and karen who has ton these, i can imagine what you were hearing from people about how strategies change. I think what happened last that proves the people who come to debate win the debate that certainly happened last night for elizabeth war quin, Julian Castro and bill de blasio. And so tonight everyone is going to be trying to get in fl and we are at serious restrictive of having the hunger games for the second debate night i think. David i would say thats not a risk that would be wonderful. We would appreciate that. Ababsolutely. I think i want to km back to biden because i think most eyes are focus ds on him. Hear here in the press there is alt of jlt on policy how far left he goes. But for most voters i would imagine the first thing they look for in joe biden is does ve the titlety to be president mentally and physically . Is his age catching up with him so it would be an impairment . Or is he coming bouncing out there and you have a sense he cant take us into the future, this is not just about an obama past. Urine you know, karen how does he combat that. Joe bide isnt a very good debater. Frankly for people good debaters being the counter puncher is often better nan being the puncher. I think joe biden is going to well see if he rises to the occasion. One interesting thing last night is Elizabeth Warren showed us you can be effective contrast to the president without mentioning his name np joe biden opened his entire campaign on President Trump and contrasting President Trump by name expressly. Well see if he does that ton or if he tries to take more of the Elizabeth Warren route, sew us what you are for not against. Its hard who needs a breakout moment the most . You look at Kamala Harris certainly in the top group of polls, right. But there hasnt been the growth dsh, the surge story like with Elizabeth Warren. Tonight would seem to be a chance to turn that around for her. I think so. But, you know, its what i think we see from the ten tonight is what manufactured moment can they place into tonights debate. . We saw with. I love you call it manufactured. It is. Thats what they are oft sfwloon 10 oh . You see. That was not manufactured. You say that like its a bad thing. Well i would said. Its the business of doing. Its not organic i should say. A lot of what Julian Castro has been praised for in karen youre right he came to debate, the strategy pl but he clearly went in with the manufactured moments he was going to drop throughout that debate. And he won it because of that. He knew mo he was going after. True. He picked a person. Maybe that is in and of itself of a strategy i would you pick a person you got nine have the facts ready for one person and one area and g then because you cant remember everything about everyone. You cant do. God knows you cant win joe biden he cant remember everything he has done in 50 years. Its the hardest thing about ten candidates. You come know wlag you want and who you have an advantage. The interesting thing as part of, the battle for the soul of the party. There is the casual person watching to get a gut feel as you say that coast biden cmo the vitality as you pointed out . But there is also primary voters who are watching for for the pesk policy and the cover of the New York Post today was interesting. Ten left feet. Dems trip over each other to be the most liberal. Biden not afraid to say that he is no bernie sanders. But is that going to work . Well, first of all it didnt think it was true the New York Post headlines i thought it was off. Amy choeb char was not scrambling too far left last night and castro was careful about that as well. You know, so i think people listen, the other people people are coming to look for tonight is if its not joe boyden widenn win . There is a discount factor on bernie sanders. A lot of people think he is not going to be president. Where does that leave with you a Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris buttigieg or somebody . I feel that one things of the that made it a fresher debate than in the past was three women on the stage with 10 people. And we have that again tonight. I thought it gave the Democratic Party a fresher feel. Lets take medicare for all as i played the sound bite. Its a popular thing among the exactic base. A lot of people dont know what it means. A lot of people think that means Free Health Care or socialize ds medicine people pay a lot. Pay a lot for drugs on med kir. Pay a lot for doctors on med kir. It may mean different coverage for a lot of people. Does biden try to make that substantive case in 60 seconds . I just did it. Hopefully he is watching. I think its hard to do that in a one hadnt answer. I think one reason people thought everybody was moving left last night is because its much easier to make a simple point in one minute than it is to make the nuanced case in one minute. I do think joe biden has experience doing that. He has debated before. Debated on the president ial debate stage before but well see if he can do that tonight. How does that play . Do people feel that youre look, he is the front runner. Clearly its resonating with a lot of people. But, you know, there is that very powerful very vocal wing of the party. And selfpeople in the lane. You add them up. A couple of things, right when biden comes up i think he started his campaign with trump. And thats going to be his big hurdle tonight. Can he talk things beyond trump . Having said that he may do that a little bit just to show the liberal base he will fight for them. Yeah. Whats interesting about joe biden tonight is a is he going to be not fatigued. Okay . And is he going to be defensive . If he is fatigued and defensive thats not a good joe biden. If he is fresh and he can control himself and temper himself he could have a dwod night. One reason he is a good debater because generally whose ever having the most fun wins the debate. He loves it. He loves it. Thats to his advantage. And there are other candidates on the debate stage who have the advantage. Well see how it plays out. Thank you all. And next, the democratic candidate mpt governor Steve Bullock is outfront why i believes he is the only exact to win over republican vote toes take down trump. Plus trump suffering a setback. Union representing immigration officers asking a court to stop one of trumps policies. And the 2020 candidates dusting off the espanol and the world taking notice. [ speaking spanish ]. Would you replace private insurance . No. I think the choice is fundamental to our ability to get. Private insurance is not working for tens of millions of americans. The reason that theyre separating the little children from family is that they are using section 1325 of that act which criminalizes coming across the border. Some of us on this stage have called to end this section to terminate it. Some like congressman orourke have not. And that of course came as Elizabeth WarrenTulsi Gabbard med kir for all the rally crying. Montana governor Steve Bullock. Governor, i appreciate your time. I want to gifl first of all a chance for you to react to whats happening here at least the right, the poll from the progress he was to pull everybody left. What would you have said last night if you were attacksed as bet orourke was bill de blasio. Ive been able to get froggive things done with a 60 Republican Legislature. We need to to make government to work impact peoples livers. What you hear time and time and again. Not a one could answer the question what if you actually had to get something done if and the republicans didnt agree with you . And they could but on issue like medicare for all do you say okay fine jump onboard and say it or do you try to say okay we need big changes but that in might be not the right solution or is that too scary in the exactic party. I think we do need big changes but it touting to be medicare for anyone that wants it. A public option. We need to make sure we have access and affordable for every individual. And you could do that by northbounding drug prices would be affordability getting rid of out of network bilk. But you dont have to take its about 150 Million People and have Employer Sponsored Health insurance that could lose it if we went to medicare for all system. You mentioned that youve worked with republicans and obviously you have. In your state you often tout look you won in a state that trump won. Yes. And you won thats been your rallying cry. One of the candidates sounds a lot like you here are the two of you. Im the only one that actually won in a trump state. I was on the ballot when trump got elected. He took mt. By 20. I won in the reddest districts. One nas donald trump won by over 20 states i can win in wisconsin and iowa and in michigan. Is it too early in the process for that message . No, i think the message that i make is we do have to win back some of the places we lost. This is according to republicans. These are courting democrats that all of a sudden voted obama, obama and trump. 25 to 30 of my voters voted for donald trump in 2016. The same time that he was on the ballot and i got reelected. But more than that, i mean when we talk about this whole progressive where is the overall party, i mean 60 of Republican Legislature ive been able to get meaningful progressive things sfanding health care kicking dark money out of elections. Freezing college tuition. I think what folks want to do is make smur we have somebody that can beat donald trump but make beth the economy and this Representative Democracy work for them again. Over the past couple of days a lot of candidates Democratic Candidates have been going to the Homestead Migrant Detention Center in miami. Elizabeth warren the first now literally one after another after who another. You were in iowa. Last weekend everybody wasnt to South Carolina for the fish fry. Congressman clyburns fish fry you were in New Hampshire. Youre staying away from the pack. What is your strategy . So my strategy is look im the only one in this field that actually won in a state at the same time that donald trump won. And we got to playbook shurp to not only bring out the base but also ensure that we can bring back voters win back places like michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania that we lost if we are going to beat him. My strategy is also im you know, washington, d. C. Has become this place where talking about issues really becomes the substitute for doing things. As the governor most of the issues theyre talking about ive had direct impact within nigh state and gotten things dub done with legislature that at times have been up to two thirds republican. You are spending time now in townhall smaller groups in knows states. Yeah. While everybody else is away. Well and it really is i did a New Hampshire townhall. Thats airing even right now. Its always been really the did the early states are coined of the great sorting hat that takes a large field and narrows it down. I think i can do well in all of the early states. And thats how we take a big field that much smaller there was one person who was mentioned 37 times last night. But he wasnt there. Here he is. The biggest threat to the security of the United States is donald trump. And there is no question about that. President trump pass alienated our allies and our friends and our ally lines. Donald trump is marching to us a far more dangerous situation. And this president who is lawless schutz not be above the law. I dont think we should conduct Foreign Policy in our bathrobe at 5 00 in the morning. Congresswoman gabbard. Should democrats be giving the president so much oxygen. We have to do more than just talk about donald trump. In election cant be about donald trump. When you look at 44 of americans, wouldnt have 400 in error their pocket in case of emergency. When when you look at whoever cleaned this place paid more than in more in faxes than 60 fortune 500 companies a lot of people arent getting a fair shot. Democrats have to show up and give them a reason to believe that you would have better Economic Opportunities and you can make washington, d. C. Work with you. If you we just make it all about trump and not give people a reason to vote for us, well, i think we end up with the same result. All right. Governor i appreciate your time thank you very much. House speaker fans pelosi pack are backing the bill after saying she would not and the progressives in the party livid at its leaders. We had an opportunity to put forth a humanitarian policy. And we wasted that opportunity. And its quite sad. We could have negotiate to do in. We could have conferenced tried to get amendments in to get humanitarian provisions put in to get againsts for facilities that abuse kids in. Instead what we are doing immediately going to just saying yes to what government passed out of the senate. We are a house majority. And we need to act like it. Ocasiocortez slam of her party and leader nancy pelosi coming after this photo of a father and a nearly 2yearold daughter who died contracts in illegal and the number of of migrants risking lives many claiming asylum is surging. Nick valencia is outfront. Reporter can you hear in his voice that antonio is terrified. His sister is kurmt being held in the Border Patrol sfags near el paso, the same facility we were invited to tour without cameras officials citing safety and security of krirn children. We heard the 17 sbaebl on a phone from her brother, telling him im alive. Says the people there are scared for their lives. While thankleful for the news her brother antonio a legal u. S. Resident is wrestling with the thought that his sister will have to go to mexico to wait out the asylum case. For him its better she stays here because its safer and she has a better chance of fighting for her asylum case. In a rare rebuke from within the administration, the nations Asylum Workers Union asking a federal court to end the policy that requires asylum seek tors wait in mexico saying it should not be forced to honor departmental directives fundamentally krer at a the moral fabric of our nation and international and domestic legal obligation been. The union says mexico is too dangerous for mierpgts especially women who can wait six months and in some cases years for asylum cases to be heard. Meanwhile, near lid 2000 miles away from the rio grand as washington debates border funding legislation, this haunting image of a father and daughter who drowned trying to coming to the u. S. Ramgtsed lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. Including Speaker Pelosi who struggled to answer when asked about it thursday. So i im i i can just imagine how that happened. And i i just think its such a shame for that to be the face of america around the world. It was here at this Border Patrol facility i had my chance encounter with isabella, the facility only designed to only 106 migrant whos for average of 8 to 12 hours but these are not normal circumstances. An official telling me theyve had up to 700 Child Migrants in custody at one im on average of 6 to 10 days. As for isabella her brother believes she is being held in the facility but does not know what happens to her next erin. Thank you very much, nick. And outfront now the acting director of u. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ken kuch nelly who spent the day on the border joining us from el paso texas. And director good to have you back on the show of course in your new role. Good to be here erin. The you know representing ohs officers saying the policy of turning over mierngts to mexico as it plays which can be time skupg is wrng. The quote from the union they should not be forced to honor departmental dreskt he was fundamentally contrary to the moral fabric of our nation and our international and domestic legal obligations. Is the union right . Absolutely not. If you look at the rest of the filing youll also see that they say there isnt a problem basically on the border. We can handle this. We dont need to institute special considerations, things like mpp thats being worked on with mexico and panned. Theyre in denial of reality. And thankfully most of our asylum officers dont think that. The union has gone ahead and filed in amick us brief but clearly doesnt represent the state of play at the border or that we are dealing with in our agency as it relates to asylum. And their reference to the historical importance of asylum is correct. But it is wrong the way they used it. We have a system that is being flooded with fraudulent claims. Appear so legitimate Asylum Seekers now have to be in the same lines with those who until we can separate out the fraudulent claims it is a trembling. You saw the pictures. You quoted the speaker who is right about what a tragedy happened there with the father and daughter there. But the reality is until we fix the asylum loopholes that encourage people to come here fraudulently, we will keep seeing the tragedies. The officers obviously, the officers involved with the union, theyre there on the ground, key to the process. They are seeing whats happening every day. And they say that that many of these people are vulnerable. That making them to go back in mexicoen a wait would put them in danger. Thats what they see as and i ethical to u. S. Policies. Can i kenton that erin. Yeah, i mean im just saying is it possible theyve seen more than you . You mentioned so they note that its dangerous to send people back to mexico to wait for their asylum cases. But these are the same people who trapsed up through mexico to get here. So that just doesnt really hold water. Now, the reality is we do hear cases of those afraid to go back to mexico. Consistent with our treaty obligations as a nation, and about 6 of the folks that are being having to wait in mexico or being considered to wait in mexico are going through that process. So those are being adjudicated. And those people who do have credible fears of being in mexico are not being sent to mexico. But mind you, all of the folks came up through our southern border. So the Union Leadership is, again, just denying reality in much of what they say in their court filing. What im trying to understand, though, is why why you think they would do that . Right because they are the officers processing the claims and seeing the people. No, no, this is a union. Right but it represents the people. This is a union they file you are saying they are making it up. Well parts of it they are. I mean, part of their brief they say there isnt a problem we can handle this with the usual way we operate. And that is just no asylum officer who has been down to the border and many of our folks work by phone. We do a lot of these remotely to move the process along. Those folks see people with real fear. And they see large numbers of people who arent going to get through the process. The reality is the folks that even go through the first phase of credible fear with the incredibly le standard we have for that then go before Immigration Judges who are about 10 to 15 of them have their claims granted. So were being swamped by 80 of the people coming through where only about 10 or 15 have legitimate claims. So the Trump Administration reportedly director wants to scale back a program which preting undocumented family members of active duty troops from being deported. Also protections would now be raebel to them only in very rare circumstances. Could you confirm if thats true . To the specific one, i can tell that you we are certainly looking at scaling back a number of programs that dont dont have a basis in law. Argued by many. And you have identified one of many, frankly, that have. Its true there but there are others war some of the others where you are increasing dprtations . Well, this in isnt final this is all going through analysis now. So you know, i dont want it reported as final by any means. But other groups would include, let me think wove got a number of Different Countries specific groups that have had carveouts of their own created that are being looked at being reeled back in. So each of them by themselves tend to be small numbers. Of course all of this adds up. And adds to the complexity of an already overwhelmed system that really is going to have to be fixed by congress before we see the attraction thats creating the tragedy add southern border comes a end. Are with you worried director before we go that the image we see is of that 23 month child and her father dead is going to be like the image from syria of the little boy on the teach, 2yearold child that this image ends up being what represents the Trump Administrationlesses on the border . No, in fact just the opposite. The reason we have tragedies like that on the border is because those folks that father didnt want to wait to go through the asylum process and the in the legal fashion so doided to cross the river. Not only died but his daughter died tragically as well. Until we fix the attractions in the asylum System People like that father and that child are going to continue to come through a dangerous trip and realize, erin, two thirds approximately 60 to two thirds of the people coming across the southern border are paying some of the most evil vicious people in the world the drug cartels on the south side of the border treat the border as a toll booth. They are paying to get threw. Lets not kid ourtsds about how dangerous a trip that our haws as they stand now are attracting these people into. That tragedy will only end when Congress Finally fixes the loopholes. Director cuccinelli thank you. Good to be with you erin. Now, we have also reached out to several writers and producers who worked on the episode to see if there was any way that carols version of events could have somehow made it into the writers room and made it on air and so far they have not commented but erin, obviously the best evidence that they have to counter the theories spreading online is the fact that she told two friends about in kemp ranesly kraenzly after the attack 20 years ago. Tonight cash haul, democratic candidate cory booker say today one of the biggest fund raising days of of his campaign by dollar as donors. After he had the most talk time during the debate last night opinion outfront now is senator booker. Senator thank you for your time process thank you for having me. Obviously now in the rear view mirror for you. It was a big night and youre watching closely tonight. Im sure. What are you watching for tonight . Well, right now its a very crowded field. And youre starting to see people have opportunities i think like myself and secretary castro had last night to really show our passion, our hearts and our heads. Ill be curious to see in a crowded debate stage how that plays out. Obviously we had some interesting exchanges last niem but a proud moment. I heard from a lot of democrats how proud they were to see so many qualified candidates. So ill be home tonight. With some good food watching at the end of the day for who is breaking out who might have some challenges. All right. So you have been unafraid to take on joe biden and others more cautious you been unafraid when you need. When you touted work with segregationist senators and you said you felt that required an apology. Biden obviously is the front runner. Senator, do you think your rivals on stanl tonight will directly take him on . Or are they going to be leary of doing that. I just want to say that my biden comments were it was the way he used and evoked the word boy. How salesmen used that name to demean and degrade them. Whoever the nominee for from our party is going to be, theyre going to have to deal with issues of race. Especially divisions that are open wounds. We all make mistakes and are imperfect. You dont fall into a defensive crouch and shift blame to someone else. So for me what i want in any leader, whether its a senator or governor, somebody that can pull folks together and unify folks. And so i actually dont think people are looking for taking shots at candidates that are unwarranted. I think its important to show distinctions. If somebody crosses the line, obviously speak from your heart, but i think that this is a debate what you saw last night, donald trump clicking out boring on his tweets, which i think was hilarious because it was boring to him because he wasnt the center of attention. He couldnt dominate all the oxygen. Thats what donald trump wants. He wants us to fight him on his turf, on his terms and make it all about him. I actually think were going to win this election. I think i can win this election by not about what were against, but by talking about what were for and not showing the worst of who we are, but the best. I want to play a key moment from the debate last night. This is when you were asked about the iran deal, which President Trump pulled the United States out from. Heres part of the moment. By a show of hands, who as president would sign onto the 2015 nuclear deal as it was originally negotiated . Just to describe, i dont know if you have a turn there, you were the only one that didnt raise your hand, senator. But did you vote for the iran deal. You said it was, quote, the better of two flawed options. When did you change your mind . I didnt change my mind. I think the question was really presented as if you were president , would you immediately go back into that deal. And i sort of was surprised i stood alone on that island. This is a changing situation every single day. Why lock yourself in to going back . What if iran has taken other actions . What if they have launched missiles, attacked more drones . When im president , im going to have all options on the table. Im not going to have a political debate stage signalling to a foreign adversary what im going to do. Im going to try to get as much as i can for peace and stability in that region. I think it was a mistake for donald trump to pull us out of that deal. He made the region less safe, he made this country less safe. He actually isolated us against our own allies. But lets be clear, as president of the United States, im going to do what i have to do to protect our people and bring peace to that area through diplomacy, but the right way. So, senator, you got the most talk time last night, but the moment, of course, that was the most viral. It was not the show of hands on iran, it was this one. When beto orourke started speaking in spanish. Your face was unforgettable and we all saw it in real time. Do you think that face right there, yours, is helping your fundraising numbers . [ laughter ] you know, it was a good lesson for me that the camera is always on when youre on those stages. I usually have a better poker face than that. Ive been cracking up all day as different friends of mine show me different captions people have chosen. One of my favorite is that moment when your father at a taco bell tries to order in spanish. But i tell you what, beto afterwards was fun loving about the moment he spoke spanish. Even joking with me, who understood him, about some mistakes that he made and imperfections in what he was saying, as do i often when i speak in spanish. So i wish the cameras not only saw us on stage, but saw the camaraderie and humor that was behind stage, too. Thank you very much, senator booker. I appreciate your time. Thank you very much. Always good to be with you. Next, jeannie on the candidates taking a page from the 2016 campaign. And jeb bush. [ speaking Foreign Language ] se, stelara® works differently.
