The president is about to arrive for a beiig rally. He says it will be on the democrats if the americans go without a paycheck this year. We need a wall and all the other things are nice to have. Without a wall, its not going to work. We can have technology, beautiful drones flying all over the place. But it doesnt work without the wall. We need a wall. We can call it anything. Well call it barriers, whatever they want. Okay. Tonight the president is making the case in el paso, which, by the way is a city that voted overwhelming for president. Only 26 of voters cast ballot for him there. So why go there . Well, tonight, team trump is releasing a video from el paso that claim the wall has made them safer. Perception is one thing, reality is a different one. Even the citys mayor is disputing the climb that the wall has cut Violent Crime in el paso. He was echoing what had been said by our attorney general a few weeks ago that was wrong. That was wrong. Well, we fact check the facts. So lets do it. According to El Paso Times another analysis ofcy crime data peaked in 1993. It plunged then in 1996, thats when president bush approved the wall there the bar dwlaer is therier that bar dwlaer is there. In four years, Violent Crime jumped 17 in el paso. We have a special report out front from the ground there. First i want to go to Caitlin Collins live where the president is about to begin that rally. Caitlin, interesting choice of a location, right . The president s facts dont seem to or his numbers dont back up the reality and the facts. What does he think he is going to accomplish tonight . Reporter well, erin the president thinks this is a city that makes the wall work. The barrier fence we showed earlier on cnn, he believes that is the reason for that drop in vie hint crime, which he has been told by the Texas Attorney general, the mayor of el paso do not believe that is right. The numbers show the president s claim is not correct. But thats not likely for the president to make that argument tonight. I am told here, echoing what he made, said during the state of the union and making that architect as those shutdown talks back in washington have essentially stalled and are on the verge of collapse right now. The president is going to continue to make his case for the wall. Also, you can expect him to talk about that demand from democrats that they want top halve the number of people they can detain, illegal immigrants. Thats something the president can bring up here in el paso. Erin, he is paying attention to beto orourke, the potential 2020 candidate, noor standing not far from where i am. He heard the president putting the blame on democrats if there is a shutdown. He brought up beto orourke saying his lines are much shorter than the president s. You can expects him to make that case tonight in el paso. Thank you, caitlin. We will be check income, in that counterrally in a few moments. First, though, the set of claims the president made, right . We went through the El Paso Times has gone through from the data and the fbi found are false, they simply dont hold true. So lets go to the ground now with ed lavandara who went to investigate out front in el p o el paso. Reporter mayor dodd owns h h car wash cafe, the only place in el paso where the customer is always wrong, even the president. Why do you think trump is saying the things about el paso that hes saying . Because he didnt know what hes talking about. Reporter they opened in 1988, while we waited the dodd told us he voted for trump and didnt hold back his thoughts on the rest. Youve never felt unsafe here . Oh, [ bleep ] no. Reporter le keeps repeating el paso used to be this horrible place. He needs to go to school. Reporter President Trump has falsely claimed el pasos law along the rio grande changed this 3w0rder town. The border city of el paso, texas, used to have extremely high rates of Violent Crime. The wall was put up. It went from being one of the most dangerous cities in the country to one of the safest cities in the country. Overnight. Reporter thats just not true, el paso has never been one of the most dangerous places in america. Violent crime was dropping many years before the wall was built, in 28 and the crime jumped a little after the wall was built. You dont feel like the president is trashing empass so . I dont think so. Reporter but some el paso republicans say trump is still right about what a border wall can do to cut down crimes and threats. If you are living in a house, you know there are illegal people wandering around your house at 2 00 in the morning . Is that a serious crime from your perspective in people put it that way. Reporter reyes spent 30 years as the top agent patrol. He remembers when a simple chain link fence was the border wall. It was ineffectually referred to as a tortilla curtain. Reporter he says there is enough border wall already in place. He says the president is lying to make the case for more. Reporter when you hear the president say el paso used to be one of the most dangerous places in the country before the wall. Its in my home. Hes mistakes characterized el paso as a kind of wild west and a Violent Crimeridden area until the fence went up. And thats totally false. Reporter he will be paying close attention from his car wash, he left us with one last warning for President Trump. If President Trump comes here, he says the exact same thing we know is wrong. How is that going to go . Not very smart. He better go from where he belongs, back east. Reporter and erin, the gathering you see behind me is the rally already starting to take shape. Beto orourke and his family have arrived. They are expected to march along the International Boundary and border fence that exists a here in el paso, beto orourke is about to take the stage about the same time the president will give his remarks in el paso tonight. Thank you and more on that in a moment. I want to go now to the member of the conference committee, a Small Bipartisan Group of senators and Congress People trying to find an agreement so there is not a shutdown in the next four days. Democrat congressman price joins me. I appreciate your time. I understand the meeting just finished. There will be another meeting again at 8 00. Obviously, if there is no agreement the government will shut down at the end of the week. It appeared to be at an impasse over this weekend. What do you think is going to happen . Are we going to have a shutdown or not . Reporter well, i certainly hope not. And i had thought up until recently that the republicans were equally determined, but now you have the president s chief of staff saying a shutdown is a very real possibility and actually over the weekend, the Senate Republicans stopped negotiating, so, so thigh, theyre trying to still hold that over us. I dont think the American People want this at all. We have been negotiating. We thought in good faith. But they pulled the plug and only now are we getting back to some of these issues. But this has been tough all along, nobody should think its not going to be tough. So you know, you say they pulled the plug, one of these issues, so far as i understand it, the number of i. C. E. Detention beds. To some people watching, may say, why is that so important . Well, it matters. Right now there are about 40,520 to be exact. Trump wants 52,000. Democrats, my understanding is want less, around 35,000. And heres what Mitch Mcconnell had to say about why he cares so much. House democrats decide to add a poison pill demand into the conversations at the 11th hour. Its a new demand. Its really extreme. This would result in the release of thousands of criminal aliens. When he says this would result in the release of thousands of criminal aliens, if you cut that number of beds. Whats your response, congressman . My response is that is just absolutely untrue. The president said the same thing. The president said this was a new issue that was thrown out. My goodness, we have been debating enforcement policy and the number of detention beds and what that implied for enforcement policy. We have been debating that a decade. Its certainly been an issue throughout this whole period of discussion. So its just an incredible deception to say that this is a new issue that weve thrown up. This has been an issue with us a long time and honestly, its been more of an issue for us over the years than the idea of a wall. Which is fascinating. May i ask you, the i. C. E. Deputy director went a little further than even senator mcconnell. He said congressman price, we will be releasing people convicted of Domestic Violence and drug crimes and gang membering. That is also untrue. Are they making that up . They are making it up. It is absolutely untrue. In fact. If you look historically at this, it is democrats. I know, i was a part of the democratic new Leadership Group as chairman of the Homeland Security group that came in, in 2007, it was democrats that insisted both in the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration that enforcement be targeted on precisely dangerous criminals, people who pose a threat to the community. You would go through and sort, people getting released, you will check first . Of course. Of course. And, but, weve just had an experience in North Carolina that indicates how far off the rails this has gone, 200 people picked up. It looks like more or less at random in a direct retaliation as the administration said to local policies to concentrate on local law enforcement, so enforcement is a problem and indiscriminal into the raids are a problem. And the number of beds they have available for interior enforcement does have an implication for that. Thats what were trying to get at. But we are the ones who have insirsed that enforcement be focused on these dangerous people. All right. Congressman price, i appreciate your time, thank you very much, sir. All right. Thank you. You can see some real hurdles still to come whether there is a shutdown on friday. Next, Kamela Harris taking on critics who sisay shes not enough. They dont know who black people are. Leave with a plan. Td ameritrade. Breaking news, dualing rallies. Right now the former democratic congressman beto orourke is leading the pro wall rally in el paso, its a busy night in texas. It is a rally, beto, at least, that has caught trumps attention. We have a line that is very long already. You see whats going on. And i understand our competitors got a line, too, a tiny little line. Is that not a new emoteicon . Patrick healey, cofounder and chairman for trump and karen finney, senior spokesperson for Hillary Clintons president ial campaign. Patrick, okay, this is risky for beto, not only because the president will compare his lines. Is this a stunt or a mart move on your view . I think beto need, this is his hometown, an issue he knows well. He is also coming off a senate race and a career in congress where he was seen as, you know, a moderate on a lot of issues, where he is relatively undefined politically, appearances, standing up to trump on the wall, speaking truth about crime and safety and the limits of what a physical barrier can do. He has the potential to appeal to progressives who may be suspect. Beto is getting ready to announce his decision of running for a president. There are signs he is leaning towards it. The reality, hes going to have to very quickly start appealing to the progressive wing of the party that in texas may have felt pretty good about him, nationally may be suspect. So taking trump on is, you know, one good way. Right. You get a lot of people who would love that, who may not necessarily think he is progressive enough. Karen, one of the things about beto orourke is since he left congress, he had the senate return. Not close enough. He had a road trip to kansas, hes been stuck lately in and out of a funk, fireworks echos his life in new york city, he describes himself as stuck in and out of a quote unquote funk. Now, karen, i hate to think what kind of blog post this would do to a woman running for president. We are talking about beto orourke. Will this hurt him or not . Reporter well, i think it is a fair point to make that it would be received very differently from a woman and wed be having a potentially different conversation. I do think, regardless, though, beto, if he decides to get into the race, frankly, if he decides to run for any office further down the line. He will have to have some sort of explanation about what this time was about for him. One other thing i would point out about his showing up at this event in texas. Dont forget that the texas primary is super tuesday, so, if you are thinking about running for president , you want to make sure you are reminding folks that you are still very popular in a key super tuesday state. Right, obviously, you know, under the Clinton Campaign, infamously positioned texas as possibly a swing state and that was not the case, obviously. Amy, let me ask you, though. I just played the president. He referenced betos rally. Thats perhaps the biggest accomplishment at all. He brought it up. He doesnt bring it up if he doesnt want to draw attention to you. Talking about his tiny little lines. Is that a sign beto is getting under the president s skin . I dont think so, there is a lot of talk about beto being down there, doing this rally. Look, he wants to race his name i. D. He wants more recognition, he is a part of this younger generation, this crowd that you know uses social media, is out there blogging, filming when hes at the dentist, what not. And i think hes enommored with seeing himself out there. Thats okay. A lot of politicians are. I dont think its a sign of him getting under the president s skin. But anybody that wants the world is watching. Right. But anybody that wants to race their name i. D. If you go of the president , he punches back. It can raise your name i. D. Kamela harris today was on a radio show. She addressed her race, you know which is a very interesting conversation and personal to everybody. In her case, she is supposed to be the black woman candidate. She was asked about it. A lot of people question if barack was black enough. I see them doing the same thing to you, what do you say to people questioning the legitimacy of your relationship. People dont know. Im black. Im not financial to spend my time educating people. I was born black, i am black im not going to make any excuses for anybody because they dont understand. Karen what do you say . I have to say, this is a personal issue for me. I happen to be biracial. I get this question all the time. What are you . I get told im not black enough. I get asked the question, what does that mean . What i really appreciated about her response is she is very comfortable with who she is, her black inside the life she has led. That is the perspective which she will answer questions and talk about issues. I think she was right, frankly, when she pointed out that raising this question as we saw, you know, with barack obama was a way to try to divide people and there is a way to try to say, is he black enough to try to question what blackness is, the thing that i would tell you that i find personally offensive when we have these conversations, is she woman enough or is she tough enough as a woman . Right. Men, women, black people, latinos, we dont just vote for people because we share the same gender or skin color. Dont think that just because shes a black woman she will automatic ally get the black vote. Black voters are going to hold all of the candidates accountable for their records and ask tough questions and its not, women dont vote for women. Women will be tough on all the candidates as well. I mean, patrick, how important is this going to be for her, that was a pagsd and strong response, obviously, she is responding to you are an africanamerican, youre biracial. Youre a part of your family is from jamaica, part from india, you are not africanamerican, she is married to someone who is white. Is this going to go away . I think she gave a really strong response. If she sticks to that, it sound funny, she sounded very human, genuine. Its how she sees herself. Absolutely. Thats the best answer that a politician can give in this regard. I mean, if means and trolls and people want to come after her or anyone else and sit in judgment of how they talk about sneer race and their heritage, you know, that is always a part of the underbelly of a political conversation. But i think for a lot of voters, theyre going to be paying more attention to policy and issues and trying to relate to her. I mean, this is going to be a big question for President Trump, right. Hes the one that started the whole birther thing with barack obama and times have changed and she is a different candidate. She was asked about it today. Heres what she said. Look, this is the same thing they did to barack. This is not new to us. And so, i think that we know what theyre trying to do. Theyre trying to do what has been happening over the last two years. Which is powerful voices trying to sell hate and division among us. So which need to recognize when were being played. Amy, does the president need to be more careful with her than he was when he started the whole birther thing . Reporter well, erin, he didnt start id. Hillary Clintons Campaign started that. But at the end of the day, at the end of the day, i believe that these candidates are going to be judged on their policies and platforms, what their ideology is. But would you had advise them, amy to stay away. Reporter from what . To stay away from questioning her, who she is, how she defines herself as he did not do with barack obama . I think that every person out there in these candidates should be comfortable. I actually commend her for being comfortable in her own skin and standing up for who she is. We all should be that way. I will say, she is a one candidate that i think republicans are underestimating. She worries me as a woman, i like her. I dont like her policies. I certainly dont support medicare for all. But as a woman that lives in suburban atlanta, i can see that she can get some traction and the republicans better pay attention. Thank you all very much. New tonight, President Trump firing back at critics slamming him over leaked documents that show 60 of his working hours are spent conducting what is called quote executive time. The president firing back saying quote, no president worked harder than me cleaning up the mess i inherited. This comes amid a speculation he may see a challenge of his own party from hopeful Elizabeth Warren suggests republicans may need a candidate in waiting because trump, okay, could be behind bars. By the time we get to 2020, donald trump may not even be president. He may not even be a free person. Okay. Out front now twoterm republican of maryland larry hogan. Governor, i appreciate your time. But your name is frequently mentioned you know a lot of people are holding out hope for you on the republican side, someone who can challenge the president in a primary. What is the biggest reason that you would run . Well, look, im flattered that people are talking about that, erin, but i havent as i said before, i havent given much thought to that at all. I just was sworn in to my second term just a few weeks ago and i have every intention at this point of continuing to work as hard as i can for the people of maryland. I think because of the fact that ive stood up and spoken out when i disagreed with things that the president was doing or saying, and because of some of the messages that we have been doing in maryland nor the past four years, i think people are starting to talk about that more, its not something that i have been behind. All right so they are talking about it a lot. Bill crystal, others, are actively doing everything they can to get to you run. They see you as a moderate republican that sees you as that great center in this country. You have spoken out. You were disgusted. That was your word. You see an oped you show a permanent fix to daca, that not only puts you at odd, you pull National Guard troops from the board tore protest the president s policy of separating kids from their families there you rejected endorsements from the nra. Do you think that those views are main stream in the Republican Party or are you not even a republican anymore . Well, look, i had, have one of the highest Approval Ratings of any governor in america. I just was overwhelming reelected in one of the blue states in the country with 96 support from republicans. I was a Ronald Reagan guy, chairman of youth for reagan. I have been involved in the party my whole life. So i am a republican. I may disagree with the president on some things, but my oped today was really focused on the dysfunction in washington. It was really calling out both the president and the leaders in congress for their failure to come one a solution that was directly impacting my state and nearly 200,000 marylanders, many of them security personnel with the fbi and with the coast guard, with Homeland Security. You know, air traffic controllers, tsa agents and secret Service Agents who werent getting paid and im just pushing to try to get a solution and, frankly, i think both the republicans and the democrats are equally at blame here and i want to see the divisive angry rhetoric stop and see them sit down and try i to negotiate a real, you know, bipartisan solution here. Which we hope theyll do i dont know if you heard at the top of the program, there is this holdup of detention beds. Obviously, we hope we dont have another one of these crises. We are four days away where 700,000 employees may not be getting paychecks. As you said a part of the reason you are being champions by republicans who oppose the president is you have not been afraid to criticize him. You have done it on many issues, leaders in your party have gone out of their way practice to praise on him. I am the happiest dude. We have a president and a National Security team that i have been dreaming of for eight yearsly would be remiss if i didnt thank you for interesting a freedom for democracy in this hemisphere. I give President Trump the credit. He put the American People ahead of politics. The president has been the only one reasonable in these negotiations. Why are so many people silent when it comes to taking on this president on issue after issue . Look, i think some of the lead, all p actually agree with a number of these issues. Some folks i think maybe you know that i hear from that talk about theyre not in agreement, they may be are afraid to speak out. I have not been afraid to but on the other hand, erin, i havent been one of these folks just out there trying to bash the president every day on every single issue. You know i havent been dieing to get on cnn every night and just criticize the president. I only when i feel like something praelly needs to be said and when i strongly disagree or where its impacting my state and the people i represent, then i Say Something about it. Look, im a governor. My job is to govern and make decisions a and the run the state of maryland. Im the vice chairman of the National Governors association. With ework with democrats you have an issue with the morality and character exhibited from the occupant of the white house . Well, i havent ever been a supporter of the tone and some of the things the way things have been handled and are being done and some of the things that have been said, there is no question about that. When do you expect to make a decision governor, if you will run or not . I really have been focused on the state of maryland and focused on trying to talk about how do we come one bipartisan Common Sense Solutions . Because im concerned about the broken politics in america. Its the Republican Party and the democratic party. Its not just the president. Some of the angry rhetoric on the other side is just as bad. And most people in america are really completely frustrated with this angry divisive politics and theyre really frustrated with this dysfunction in washington, where nothing ever seems to get done and where they dont seem to really care about solutions. Thats what frustrates me. I want to ask you about howard schultz, obviously, hes mulling an independent bid. Hes out there doing town halls across the country and at first all the democrats are, oh my god, will you get out, will you kill us here. But that is not necessarily what might happen. Heres a former Clinton Campaign chairman john podesta and president ial candidate ralph nader, polar opposite views on schultz. Here they are. I would think that, you know, mr. Schultz would rather have as his legacy the fact that he became a billionaire selling frappuccinos than he helped getting donald trump reelected in the united states. My guess is he will appeal to more Republican Voters than democratic voters. Who do you think schultz will hurt more, trump tore democrats . You know, im not a political pundit, id hate to guess what schultzs candidacy will impact. Im really focused on trying to fix the broken politics and just talking about this one versus that one, democrats fighting republicans. I want to talk about how we can change the dialogue. Because none of it is really helpful. Look in maryland, twothirds of both houses of my legislature, more than twoone democratic state. Were getting things done. We sit down together and figure out a way, even if we disagree to not be disagreeable. We figure out a way to reach across the aisle and come up with Common Sense Solutions. That itself not happening in washington. Thats whats really broken. I dont know whether the solution is on the democratic, every problem is on the democratic side the republican side or somewhere else. I think we ought to look at where the best ideas come from and we ought to stop with the finger pointing and you know the blame and just figure out, come up with solutions. All right. Well, governor, i hope more people will do that and hear your common sense and calm. Thank you. Thank you, erin. Next, a freshman democrat forced by Party Leaders to apologize for antisemitic tweets. Moments ago she made her first comment about. Were you surprised by the criticism . Always surprised. Are you worried about losing committee absolutely not. Okay. The minnesota democrat faced intense backlash and republicans calming out for her to be stripped of her Committee Assignments after the tweet. Heres the tweet, quote, all about the benjamins, baby, thats her tweet as she basically retweeted a tweet that suggested that the House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy supported israel only for campaign contributions. So, when asked what omar meant by all about the benjamins, omar tweeted, apac a pro israeli lobbying group. Out front, Clinton White house aide and special assistant to president george w. Bush. Omar said she apologized, she said unequivocally shes sorry. End of story . I dont know if its the end of the story. I think its the right thing to do to apologize, i think regardless of what her intent was, the effect was harmful. Im glad she acknowledged. She was learning through the process. The truth is there must be some space to be critical of israel, particularly president netanyahu on the west bank and treatment of palestinians without perpetuating jews or antisemitic stereotypes. Republicans did not hold donald trump accountable when he tweeted a star of david in the 2016 attacking hillary clinton. They didnt hold Kevin Mccarthy accountable when he did the whole george soros stealing the election. They didnt hold steve king accountable. Is this move on, she says she is unequivocally sorry, she went into detail. She didnt think about this as fitting into a stereotype, shes sorry, accept it. What do you say . No, i would not move on. I think she needs come off the House Foreign Affairs committee. Her affairs are well known. Nancy pelosi well knew how she felt when she put on t on the house committee. Which is a terrible assignment. She has continued with these views. Im glad she was forced to apologize, if her apology statement, she said, im just now getting educated on the antisemitism and ropes, im sorry, are you 37yearsold, you are an elected member of congress. You ought to know better at a minimum you shouldnt be on the House Affairs committee. What is the excuse for donald trump submitting a star of david . Hes a grown man, whats the excalls for Kevin Mccarthy tweeting the stereotypes about george soros and tom desire and mike plume berg stealing the election. Thats an offensive anticommit i semitic. The ready who were george soros and they were trying to buy the midterm elections, around we saying the same thing here . Lets have a consistent standard. Is he saying the same thing . Both parties have prominent jewish donors. We have Sheldon Adeleson that funds republican stuff. Theyre prominent jewish donors that is not the issue. Donald trumps record on supporting israel, ill put that up against omars record any day. He says buy an election. She says all about the benjamins, what itself difference . The imps is she has a long history of making unit semitic remarks shh, se a well known supporter of the bds movement. She is not i dont believe recognized israels right to exist there is no let him finish. Im give you a chance. Finish. Scott. There is nothing equivalent about these matters, this is a deflection point. Democrats are reeling, they have antisemitism in their ranks and racism in virginia and theyre trying to deflect this back on republicans. Are you kidding me . The republicans have been the party of divisiveness and racism and antisemitism and sexism and homophobia, all types of bigotry in this country. Dont give me that double standard, yes, there are problems in the Republican Party and democratic party. The difference is republicans dont hold their leaders accountable, like you are not holding mike, donald trump accountable. Are you not holding Kevin Mccarthy accountable. You want to hold omar accountable. Yes, i said she should apologize, wur not willing to do the same thing with your own party. That itself the problem, American People can see through that scott.
