We are finding out more through some nearly 350 pages of german intelligence papers that cnn managed to get a hold of. This group has also has a boot camp where they hike for ten miles with backpacks and this is what he is connected to. These papers also suggest that he talked about waging a terrorist attack and suicide attack. Authorities did not arrest him because they did not think he was a serious fish or suspect. Two recent press conferences lasted three hours and one last the four hours. Cnns Matthew Chance live in moscow for us. Matthew, you have covered these before. We watched them eagerly. Sometimes it is stagecraft and sometimes we get more personal questions about Vladimir Putin. Are you expecting questions about trump or the american relationship to come up today . Reporter im certainly hoping that will come up. Im hoping to hear Vladimir Putin speak with trump and the expectations for the presidency. I hope because there is a lot of talk about how these two president s have a supposed bromance and can Work Together to do deals with syria and nato and ukraine. You know, it may not happen. In the past, our expectations have been dashed when it comes to what we want to hear Vladimir Putin speak about. He is speaking about the economy right now. Talking about how the situation he hopes will improve in the year ahead. Pretty dry stuff. The russian economy is in crisis in the sense it is under sanctions from the United States and from the eu. A very low oil price which the russian economy is based on. We are listening for the fourth term. The elections due in the country next year. Sorry, in 2018. And so the speculation is now is Vladimir Putin going to stand or not for that next term. I personally think he will. We may get clarity throughout the press conference. I doubt he will be asked about it. Lets ask you about Nuclear Proliferation. All of a sudden, a concern these two countries are going in the wrong direction talking about nukes. Are we talking about the two countries talking about modernizing the Nuclear Arsenals or is that somehow code for ramping up Nuclear Arsenals or is this dark and menacing . Reporter i dont think. They both got something in the region of 1,500 Nuclear Missiles on the United States side and russian side. They have many more in reserve. You know, i dont get a sense they need more Nuclear Weapons. I think Donald Trumps point is he wants the u. S. To modernize arsenal of Nuclear Weapons. Certainly thats russias point. They are concerned with the antimissile defenses with the United States and other nuclear countries, that coukcould neutre the defenses. Putin is talking about making weapons and missiles avoiding antimissile technologies. Another really important strand of argument. It is not necessarily we all want Nuclear Weapons to go. It is not a bad thing for countries to spend money on modernizing. It is preferable to have modern Nuclear Weapons in store than old rusty ones. There are people who believe that is a legitimate way forward. Matthew chance, you are monitoring that for us. Maybe well find some news. Thank you for that. Well continue to check in with you. Thank you. Its the announcement that marks a major turning point if the syria bloody civil war. We will have that coming up. Way. Especially in my business. Police say the single shot ason king who was out on the shopping trip with his grandmother. A disturbing arrest caught on camera. Take a look. You can see a ft. Worth officer grabbing jacklin craig. The officer breaks out a stun gun. It is unclear if he uses it. The officer was called to the scene by craig who said a neighbor assaulted her son. Thats when the pair got into a fight apparently about how to raise children. The unidentified officer placed on restricted duty status as the department investigates. For the first time in four years, the syrian city of aleppo is back under government control. It was the last urban stronghold for the rebels. This managerks a major turning t in the civil war. Muhammad lila has more. Reporter this is a decisive moment in the civil war. One of the most significant moments since the war began five years ago. Syrian state television breaking into regular programming to announce they quote liberated all of eastern aleppo from all armed terrorist groups. That is confirmed by rebel negotiators on the ground. Civilians and rebel fighters were evacuated from the city. Syria state broadcasters showing people celebrating in the streets and waving flags. This was a decisive victory for the government. The city of aleppo is no longer divided between the western side which was the government side and parts of the eastern side which were held by the rebels since they occupied the neighborhoods since 2012. The loss to the rebels cannot be under estimated. Eastern aleppo was their command center. They coordinated operations and had a network of operations on the ground who communicated across the country and in fact around the world. That base is no longer there. The city is no longer divided. Syr Syrias Bashar Al Assad is no long near control. Something that many people thought was unthinkable when the revolution got under way. Even more now is the fact that syrias president Bashar Al Assad is proving he may outlast americas president barack obama. This was unthinkable a few months or years ago. The question is being asked. What happens to the revolution . We know the fighters who have been evacuated from eastern aleppo have been taken to idlib. The problem with that province, there are other groups there. A strong isis presence there. A strong presence of al nusra and as well as the moderate opposition. The problem is these groups have been fighting each other the last several years. It remains to be seen how strong that sovereign is there. Once again, all of eastern aleppo now belongs to the Syrian Government and Syrian Government is celebrating it as a major victory. Welcome back to early start. Im christine romans. Im miguel marquez. Merry christmas to you. It is 29 minutes past the hour. New information about the tunisian man suspected in the berlin attack that killed 24 people. Anis amri, the target of the manhunt. Police are certain he was behind the wheel of the tractortrailer. They say they found amris fingerprints inside the truck and on the door of the truck. We have dash cam footage that shows the fatal moment that the truck plowed into the arcade. You see it on the left side of the screen. A few minutes later, shoppers run for their lives. We learned more about amris ties to the Terror Network in germany. Lets bring you the latest with journalist chris burns live in berlin. Chris, there must be a sense that amri is still in germany. They are banging down doors. Reporter they are, miguel. They are busting down doors to look for anis amri across germany and probably beyond germany. A search yesterday in denmark that turned up nothing. Hundreds of police active on this. At the same time, were looking at documents. Take a look at the headline. This is the perfect sense of irony the berliners have. Showing the gaps between the concrete blocks here behind me at the market, but also talking about the gaps in intelligence. We looked at 350 pages documents that show there were plenty of dots to connect showing anis amri was active with the group led by abu allah. He is known as a hate preacher. This organization was recruiting and training people with backpack trips ten miles long to like a boot camp to train them. That is what amri was part of. He also was, through surveillan surveillance, he was heard saying he is ready to be a suicide attacker in an attack, but not found to be a big fish or serious candidate for that kind of thing. Even though he was held for a while, by authorities, pending his deportation back to tunisia, he was released because of a technicality. Here we are now, miguel. What is public sentiment . You had the situation in france and belgium where people were on the radar and didnt act aggressively enough. Now you have this guy in the middle of obviously the concern over refugees across europe. What is the public sentiment across germany right now and will there be a price to pay at some point . Maybe not during the investigation. Reporter that is quite possible we will see the local elections coming up in the spring. Federal elections coming up in the fall. Definitely there has to be a lot of explaining before the elections to show yes we are on this case. They have to explain how he managed to slip through the cracks. Here is another one showing anis amri. A newspaper showing this is where he hid out at a mosque in northern berlin. Police asking why they did not catch this guy in the first place. That is going to cause anger among a number of voters. How will they react is anybodys guess. Up to now, Angela Merkel has done well in the polls. Four other terrorist attacks this year. She bounced back. What will happen after this one . We dont know. We have to see how the polls pan out. The frustration they had the wrong guy for so long and let this guy move. Chris burns for us in berlin. Thank you very much. And whether he has help and support and if he is planning something else. This is Christmas Eve eve. And possibly on the run and if he can get a message out and show he can get away. That would be a problem. In western germany now, police say they have foiled an apparent unrelated terror plot. Police arrested two brothers from kosovo. Officials say the brothers are suspected of planning attack on the europe largest Shopping Mall and Christmas Market in the city of oberhausen. Police are trying to determine how long the plot was planned. In australia, seven people under arrest as Police Investigate a plot to attack central melbourne on christmas day. I dont, again, without previewing what we may do if and when this resolution comes to a vote, nobody here felt boxed in by a tweet from the president elect. He is perfectly entitled to express his views on these things. There was no boxing in of our purview or how we might deal with this going forward. Egypt postponed the showdown vote after israel and trump weighed in. Lets reiterate here. A u. N. Drama happening with the israelis calling in the help of donald trump. Donald trump calling the president of egypt. One president at a time is the rule here. Clearly the folks involved in that process it is also indicative of how low the relations between netanyahu and obama. At this moment, Vladimir Putin live with his annual News Conference on russian tv. He is sure to talk, we believe, about the incoming u. S. The American Dream may be out of reach for half of all young americans. This is new data that Shows Millennials have a 50 chance of making more money than their parents did. That percentage has steadily declined since hitting 92 for those born in the 1940s. This is according to the economists. One of the main reasons incomes are stagnant, the bottom 50 of earners made 25,000 in 2014. The same group made 21,000 in 1980. The top 1 is a big jump from 341,000 from 1980. Americans are keeping all of the wealth. That was exacerbated with the great recession. And some americans have a feeling of being left behind. Something trump tapped into. This is income inequality. It is also about the u. S. And all of the other countries getting parity over the years. After the war the entire world was wrecked. I would say the first half of the 20th century was very good for american workers. If that is your baseline. Right. Now the rest of the world is rising too. And people around the world are watching president Vladimir Putin right now. Commanding the podium and taking question questions. We are watching news about questions about Nuclear Weapons. A live report coming up. All right. 43 minutes past the hour. Russian president Vladimir Putin right now delivering his 12th annual televised press conference. We expect him to focus on donald trump and terrorism. For how long he will speak is hard to say. Cnns Senior International correspondent is live in moscow. Ma Matthew Chance, he is talking about whether russia is falling behind on Information Technology and the comments about Nuclear Strength from donald trump were expected or not. Reporter well, we are hoping for all those hotbutton issues to be addressed. We hope he talks about Nuclear Weapons and when donald trump takes the presidency in the u. S. We hope he talks about syria. As often is the case in the event by Vladimir Putin, in order to get to those tid bits, you have to wade through the e ocean of other stuff. He was asked about the question of the state of the banks. My favorite one was the one he expanded on for several minutes of the production of agriculture machinery in russia as well. He briefly mentioned the high profile killings that dogged russia for a while. Boris nemesov last year and the killing of the Russian Ambassador to turkey four days ago. He said we will find who is responsible for this. Not just the killing, but those behind it and hold those accountable. In terms of the other stuff, we have a long way to go. Still in the first hour of the press conference. It lasted three hours last year. The longest one, so you know, in 2008, it went on for 4 fohours d 40 minutes. Thats the record we are aiming for today. Thank you, matthew. We know you will monitor this for the next few hours. Thank you. We are just learning right now Italian Police announcing they have shot and killed the suspect in the berlin Christmas Market murders. The 12 People Killed in the truck attack. The most wanted man in europe. Manhunt now over. Italian agencies and police confirming the berlin suspect after being asked for identification near milan. He was shot dead. He had gone to italy from tunisia years ago. Now after a shootout he is dead. Lets bring in chris burns in berlin for us. Chris, this must come as enormous relief, but at the same time, police busted two other possible attacks on germany. A sense of relief, but unease about what to expect for the next few days. Reporter absolutely, miguel. This aint over. We saw two more suspects arrested in a plot against the largest Shopping Mall in europe in oberhausen which has a Christmas Market. Another Christmas Market plot foiled this time by police. They sent more police there. They did not give us more details about that, but it is troubling to see. We dont know if there is a link with the oberhausen plot and what happened here in berlin. Authorities are continuing searching and the thing is anis amri was connected with a group that has been recruiting and prostletizing to wage attacks like these. It is led by abu allah. He is a hate preacher in germany. He has a network. They are also linked to isis. Authorities will be very much on edge watching for that to see if there are any copycat attacks like here on monday killing 12 people and injuring 48 people. Including two americans. For people just tuning in. The manhunt is over. Italian police confirming they shot and killed that suspect in the berlin Christmas Market truck attack. He is dead. It was a normal checkpoint. He was asked for identification. He pulled out a pistol. A gun fight ensued. That is what the italian officials are saying. This suspect is dead. He would go, chris, to the milan sub be suburb us. Not a surprise. He was in prison for years in italy after starting a fire at a refugee center. This man originally from tunisia, but ties around europe. Reporter yes. Absolutely. Anis amri is not a recent refugee. He is a common criminal now. He had been in europe for more than seven years. He left tunisia. Running from the law there. He came to italy. He was jailed for four years. That is where it is believed perhaps he was radicalized as others have been radicalized in prisons in other parts of europe by other people in the prisons. He was radicalized. That is probably one reason he went back to italy on the run. He probably had some support network. We are looking at reuters. They know this is the man. They identified him from his fingerprints. Dont go away, chris. I want to go to ben wedeman. Ben, we know the press conference with the Italian Interior Ministry and Italian Police sources confirming the suspect is dead. Ben. Reporter what we understand is that he was stopped outside the govani train station at 3 00 a. M. It was an ordinary check by police of documents. They asked the man to show his documents. Instead, he pulled out a. 22caliber pistol. He shouted akbar allah. He shot one officer in the shoulder. He was then killed on the spot. The italians were on high alert for anis amri. Somebody who spent several years in italy in italian prisons. He obviously got away from the germans, but italians managed to find him, stop him and kill him. Ben, you said they were on alert. Any sense of how it was they didnt realize this might be their man when they were asking him for passport information . Reporter well, it appears it was an ordinary check of documents at 3 00 in the morning in the city like milan. The police are looking for people. You understand why they might be out and about at that time of night. We dont know if they were working on a tip or this was simply a case of finding somebody like a needle in a haystack in a big city late at night. We dont know why they stopped him. I take it 3 00 a. M. In the train station, this is somebody who is trying to stay under the radar and put himself over the radar by traveling so late and seeming to skirt around. Are there trains running out of there . What is it like there . Reporter well, it is not unusual in a big city like milan that is the train station is where a lot of people hang out there. Homeless people in the area. There are migrant people. It is not unusual people would be there. Often times are where train stations are where those who have suspicions motives hang out. Petty criminals. The police are on the lookout. Given anis amri has an italian connection in the sense he first arrived here in the beginning of 2011 and spent several years here and including several years in prison. There was an expectation from Security Officials he may return to a more familiar territory after he committed the terrorist attack in berlin. All right. Ben wedeman, dont go away. We are following the breaking news. This berlin attack suspect is dead. We have all the details and developments. Stand by. This is cnn breaking news. Our breaking news. As we told you, we are just learning these moments from italian authorities that the suspect in the berlin Christmas Market killings has been stopped, checked for his identification. He pulled out a pistol and they are saying he was shot dead. On the spot in the train station in milan italy. Anis amri is dead after several days of intense manhunt in germany and across europe. I want to go first to chris burns on the ground for us in berlin. Chris, im curious if you have had a chance to speak to anybody there and to see what is the level of relief that he has been caught. Reporter miguel, we have not. This has just broken. German authorities are in contact with italian authorities. Obviously they had to be to provide the information needed. The fingerprints found on the truck here inside and outside that truck showing that anis amri was the guy who crashed that truck into the Christmas Market. Yes, there is contact there. As far as relief, it probably we will be a lot of relief here. It is still a nation on edge because you still have this network that anis amri worked with and will that stir things further . Who
