The question is whether or not the republicans will continue to abandon ship or whether he did enough to stabilize his campaign after a combative performance and going after Hillary Clinton on a number of issues in the contentious debate. Did donald trump successfully turn the page from fridays disaster in his campaign . Did he successfully move on from that last night . I think toward the end of the debate, there were people talking about Different Things than what they were talking about when the debate began which was the leaked videotapes. I dont think thats the end of it. I think there were warning more tapes leaked this week. You know, there is an 11 00 a. M. Conference call with paul ryan. When pressed, he called it locker room banter which grates on many people that republicans have to answer for. When pressed by anderson last night whether or not he acted on that locker room banter. This is what was said. Just for the record, though, are you saying what you said on that bus 11 years ago you did not actually kiss women without consent or grope women . I have Great Respect for women. Nobody has more respect for women. For the record you are saying you never did that . Frankly, you hear these things. I was embarrassed by it. I have tremendous respect for women. I will tell you no, i have not. So Brian Stelter think this will turn into a fishing expediti expedition. There are women who exist who said that already. Christoff said that last night. He does keep the story alive. There are other people interested in keeping the story alive. Including democratic operatives. It felt like, john and christine, nobody won. Obviously the Campaign Says they won. It felt to me nobody won. Viewers were watching this with one eye open. Thats distressing. I want to ask John Phillips. Lets listen to what Hillary Clinton said. How she responded to the friday debacle and what this says about the candidate. Listen to Hillary Clinton. What we all saw and heard on friday was donald talking about women. What he thinks about women. What he does to women. And he has said that the video doesnt represent who he is, but i think its clear to anyone who heard it that it represents exactly who he is. John phillips, you support donald trump. This must be a remarkable three or four days for Trump Supporters. What do you make of the attempt to dismiss it as locker room talk . If you expect the full jimmy sw swaggert, you did not get that. I did think the debate was the complete inverse of what we saw the first time around. The first time around, he was much better the first 30 minutes talking about trade and economy. Then after that, he got caught up in all of the issues concerning himself. Taxes, birtherism. He wasnt able to pivot. Last night, i thought the first 30 minutes were weaker. I thought he kind of put it in high gear and whenever a subject would come up he did not want to talk about. He would pivot and talk about the emails and immigration and talk about trade. Talk about things he is well versed in. I thought he did a good job. Maria, cardona, we will play more sound after the break. To johns point, one thing you hear from analysts today is that Hillary Clinton didnt deliver a quote unquote knockout blow. Clinton went in staggered and trump played it safe. A couple of things, john. I dont think she needed to deal it. If people think he put this nauseating tape behind him, they are sadly mistaken. There is more to come and it will not be pretty. A couple of other things from last night. The non apology apology, he doubled down on that. He did not apologize to any women. If you look at the reactions of the undecided voters and in your poll and frankly on twitter and social media, they continue to be disgusted by what he is trying to push aside and under the rug and locker room banter. You even had players from the nfl who know locker room banter saying we have never heard anybody talk this way about women. If they did, it would be wrong. Again, i think he did himself no favors with what he desperately needed to do, john. That was add to his appeal and try to bring more voters in to his tent. This was a primary debate for him. He was playing pattycake while Hillary Clinton was playing chess. The context is he would employ a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton. Listen. If i win, i am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there has never been so many lies and deception. There has never been anything like this. We will have a special prosecutor. When i speak, i go out and speak, the people of this country are furious. And eugene scott, to put this in perspective, he said he would throw Hillary Clinton in jail. I know in the campaign, nothing is shocking or surprising. It is very unusual about a president of the United States to say ill throw another politician in jail. Thats not something that happens in the United States of america. It happens in dictatorships. The timing of the statement and jab and tone of it were what were uncomfortable for many view viewers. Lawmakers have repeatedly said she should be indicted. Whether that is a big difference from what others have said, im not sure. Lock her up. It reminded me of the snl joke on saturday night live. Let me ask you whether Hillary Clinton was able to soft earn the deplorables comment. She said half of the donald Trump Supporters were in the basket of deplorables. Then she said maybe it is not half of them. She did not walk away from the deplorable labels. His supporters lashed on to it. Listen to how she tried to soften it last night. Within hours, i said that i was sorry about the way i talked about that because my argument is not with his supporters. Its with him. With the hateful and Divisive Campaign he has run. And the inciting of violence at his rallies. And brutal comments about not just women, but all americans. All kinds of americans. You know that deplorables comment and her attempts to soften it was a gift for h her opponent. They have really been able to run with. Sure, but again, christine, his supporters loved it. What he needs to do in these very last few days of the campaign is to try to grow his tent. Im glad you played that clip. I thought it was a brilliant answer to something that, you know, his supporters are trying to use against her. What everybody else heard, including independents and women, College Educated women who we all have been talking about are the group that he needs to get because, you know, mitt romney won them by 11 points and lost the election. Hillary clinton is winning them by more than 20. What she did there, i think, was flip it on him. She also opened up what she was talking about her strategy and continued to underscore his manifest unfitness and temperament that he doesnt have to be commander in chief. Because what she focused on was his divisive personal attacks on women and on latinos and muslims and the disabled. You name it. We know it by heart. All of the demographics he insulted on day one. It was part of the strategy to continue to focus how unfit he is for the highest office in the land. Can i disagree with her . I think this hits her where she is vulnerable. It goes to private audiences and says one thing. We have seen it in front of other large Financial Institutions giving speeches and paid a lot money. Saying one thing at the rallies. In light of the wikileaks situation, that was a good moment for donald trump and bad moment for her. It shows the difference in strategy between her and her husband who was there last night. Bill clinton ran as new democrat. He was trying to get the swing voters. She is running to the left. She is trying to create excitement among members of the Obama Coalition. They turn out in large numbers and screw everyone else. The fact he pivoted to that subject last night, i thought was good for him. Guys, dont go anywhere. More to discuss, including what some people thought was the biggest moment of the night when he publicly split with his running mate. And making claims last night that opponent would raise taxes on the middle class. Listen. And indeed the way he talks about his tax cuts would end up raising taxes on middle class families. Millions of middle class families. Were cutting taxes for the middle class. We are cutting them big league for the middle class. I tell you, Hillary Clinton is raising your taxes. Look at me. Like everyone else, i spent a lot of time thinking over the last 48 hours about what we heard and saw. You know, with prior republican nominees with president. I disagreed with. They politics, policies, principles. I never questioned their fitness to serve. Donald trump is different. John, did you hear anything last night that would help donald trump with women . With College Educated women . The women demographic he so desperately needs to work on . Well, he showed Us Donald Trump the queens street fighter. The previous debate, he took the bait laid out by Hillary Clinton and ended up in the has berabb l holes. Last night, you could tell where he wanted to take the debate. He is was able to pivot. I think that did him so favors last night. In terms of female voters, look, he has to get republicans back in the tent. What happened in the previous days where you had a bunch of people pull endorsements, including sitting u. S. Senators hurts him. It hurts him with republican women who have not come back in the numbers republican men have done. What last night did and performance he turned in last night may be able to stop that bleeding and may be able to stop the mass exodus that could have happened this morning of other elected republican officials that could have been a death blow. If the bar for success is more members of your own party. More elected officials of your own party do you cut and run from the campaign . You have to acknowledge when things arent going well, john. Things are not going well. Thats true. A piano also did not fall on his head during the debate. From that sense, it was wildly successful. Maria. When you are talking about trying to stop republicans from fleeing their own nominee 30 days before the election, you know you are in the deepest hole ever. The other thing that happened last night is republicans might think that this stopped the bleeding, but there is still the putrid stench of gangrene going on in the campaign. There is not anything from him being a pervert and sexual predator that admitted to doing and wanting to go into sexual assault. The way that he dismissed it. I think does himself deeper disfavors. It is a misguided thought that this is what he needed to do last night. Again, i go back to he absolutely this was crack for his supporters. He has his supporters. He needs to increase his tent. He needs to increase his appeal. He did nothing to do that last night. The other big headline from last night is where are trump and pence on the issues. Specifically the issue of syria. Eugene scott, what does this tell us about the state of policy inside this ticket . One could guess this weekend wasnt spent talking about a lot of policies. Specifically regarding international affairs. The reality is i remember hearing that along with i dont know much about russia line. I cant remember it verbatim. I remember thinking that his opponents will use this in a clip to demonstrate a lack of awareness and unity between the two leading candidates for the gop. Pence is still on the ticket this morning. When your running mate doesnt leave you. Thats a low bar right there. That is a big victory. Guys, stick around. Including Abraham Lincolns introduction into the campaign. Which did it more successfully . Thats coming up. All right. Last night we saw i guess the meanest president ial debate since they came on television 56 years ago. As i recall, that was something i said about Abraham Lincoln after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg movie lincoln. It was a master class watching president lincoln get the congress to approve the 13th amendment. It was principled and it was strategic. And i was making the point that it is hard sometimes to get the congress to do what you want to do and you have to keep working at it. Honest abe never lied. Thats the difference between Abraham Lincoln and you. Thats a big, big difference. You think that was one of her weaker moments . It has to do with the wikileaks moment. She told private banks you need a public and private position. She is saying one thing to wall street bankers and the other in public. Had that come out in the primary, Bernie Sanders would have jumped all over it. The other, eugene, i thought donald trump was deft in his response to it. Making light. I certainly thought as well. It reminded me of the you are no jack kennedy line. It highlighted the fact that Hillary Clinton does have issues with honesty with voters of the the reality is with fact checks, trumps lies are significantly higher. Thank you for saying that. The Fact Checking was clear. More misstatements by trump than clinton. More dramatic. He talked about bombs on the floor of the San Bernardino apartment where the attack happened last year. There were no bombs on the floor. Nobody saw that. Muslims in the town did not cover it up. To hear him say he never lied. His nose would be pretty long. The other headline is when trump said Hillary Clinton has hate in her heart. The insults here get deeper by the day. Lets listen to that sound bite. We have a divided nation because people like her, believe me, she has tremendous hate in her heart. When she said deplorables, she meant it. When she said irreemable. She has tremendous hatred. John phillips. I have to say this whole election sometimes we report on things so straight. It is almost remarkable how ugly this has gotten. That, by the way, is connected in a way to the honest abe remarks. She says one thing to a private fundraiser and immediately has to walk it back when it becomes public. This hits her with the Obama Coalition which is with enthusiasm. They feel her voters and supporters feel she is kind of done that to them on a host of issues. I remember on the floor of the senate where she was talking about gay marriage. She had moral and religious objections to it. She was one of the last to the party to come back and reverse herself.
