The shooting began. Here is part of the dispatch call. Shots fired. Officer down. Got a city officer down. Shots fired shotted fired on airline the gunman died minutes later in a shootout with police. You can kind of hear it there. Keeping in mind the situation in brouj is already tense after the shooting of alton sterling on july 5th. Just last week state police announced they had received threats against officers. President obama called the shooting a cowardly and reprehensible assault and again condemned all attacks on Law Enforcement. Police across the country confront every single day. We as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence against Law Enforcement. Attacks on police are an attack on all of us. The gunman was active online and what he had to say was he openly talked about the need to, quote, fight back. Senior investigative correspondent drew griffin has more on the shooter. Reporter police are calling this an ambush. As they look into his social media presence, they are painting a picture of a confused young man, former marine. Hes 29 years old, africanamerican out of kansas city, missouri. He would have driven 800 miles just to get here. Police believe based on where he was this morning that he had been here, he had knew the terrain and had actually staked out where he would strike and kill these Police Officers. On social media, he talked openly about the need to do mrp just protest. He basically gave a call to action and even gave instructions as to what people should think of him should anything happen if he would not be around. Police continue to investigate while they are also trying to deal with the alton sterling killing that took place that sparked massive protest in this city. All this going on as the Republican NationalConvention Gets Underway and people are trying to get through what has been a deadly summer. Drew grimpb, back to you. Thank you. Here we are again talking about the fact that Police Officers killed in the United States before that we dealt with dallas and orlando. Its been a tragic time. It certainly has. Three Police Officers killed. One of them posted on facebook about how tired and physically and emotionally exhausted he was. Montrell jackson talked about trying times in his post from july 8th, one day after the Dallas Police ambush and three days after Alton Sterlings death. Its poignant what he wrote. Heres part of what he wrote. I swear to god i love this city, but i wonder if this city loves me. He wrote about baton rouge. In uniform i get nasty looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat. Ive experienced so much in my short life and these last three days have tested many e to the core. That says a lot. It really does. Earlier Anderson Cooper spoke with his uncle. He was 33 years old, going to be 34 this december. And just a tremendous dedicated individual. Really believed in what he was doing. Believed in helping people. He wanted to help other people. He had a young baby. Yes, i think three or four months old. Any time i had had an opportunity to talk to him, he was all about what he could do to help other people. He just wanted to do things that he thought he could do. Something to help baton rouge be a better city. Such a tremendous young fellow. He had written online in the wake of the alton sterling shooting about some of the pressures he was facing, the difficulties he was facing. But being a police officer, is that something he always wanted to do . Yes, thats because he always wanted to be somewhere he could be protected and dedicated to helping people. He just was a motivate ued person who thought he could do something to help other people be better. Hes been like that all his life. He was just a dedicated young man. Thats the way he was. Alton sterling was killed on july 5th. Some believe that gavin long may have carried out this as some form of revenge. The Sterling Family called out for peace on sunday and sterlings aunt made this plea that we want you to hear to stop the violence. Listen. No justice, no peace. Thats what were calling for. Stop this killing. Stop this killing. Stop this killing. Shes been through a lot. Their family is like 300 strong there in baton rouge. Earlier i spoke with senior Law Enforcement analyst tom fuentes and asked what kind of impact this violence could have on police work. Its very difficult because we have had isis threats for two years that have put out messages saying kill Police Officers and we have the attack of new york city Police Officers with a hatchet a year and a a half ago. Then we have white hate groups that want to take on Law Enforcement. The fbi stopped a plot in 2010 involving a Militia Group out of michigan that wanted to kill hundreds of Police Officers with explosives. That was thwarted, thankfully. Now we have a couple black hate groups or individuals inspired to avenge black people who have been shot by the police and in their mind get revenge or retribution by killing white Police Officers or for that matter any police officer. White hate groups, mental illness, terrorism recently, its been a very tragic couple weeks, couple months. The u. S. Now once again mourning the victims of a deadly shooting. Police officers murdered for the second time in just a few weeks. Well have more later this hour. Also ahead, well it turn to world news. Funerals have begun in turkey for People Killed in a failed coup attempt. How ankara is dealing with the alleged plotters. Well have that for you, coming pup. And lets talk the Republican NationalConvention Set to begin. The home of the cavaliers. Why the spotlight will really put the presumptive nominees star power to test. Welcome back. Turkeys government rounded up thousands of people accused in the failed military coup and the president is thinking about bringing back the Death Penalty for those responsible. Hes urging supporters to continue rallying in the street. He credits this progovernment protesting for foil iing the attempted coup. The president there also demanding that the United States extradite the man that you see here. He is a turk irk cleric that mr. Erdogan blames for the coup. He lives in selfimposed exile in the United States and denies any involvement. The secretary of state john kerry spoke earlier with jake tapper. I made it very, very clear to the foreign minister of turkey yesterday that the United States is not harboring anybody. Were not preventing anything from happening. We have never had a formal request for extradition. We have always said give us the evidence, show us the evidence. We need a solid, Legal Foundation that meets the standard of extradition in order for our courts to approve such a request. 290 people were killed in the coup attempt. Mourners are coming together for funerals, but turkey remains a deeply divided nation. Arwa damon has more. Its the choke iing sorrow o loss, overwhelming both young and old. Some barely even able to walk. Others collapsing under the weight of their emotions. Loved ones, neighbors and strangers came to funerals across istanbul for those who perished. This is a nation deeply divided, united in this moment by grief. 48 hours after fridays failed coup, many are still trying to come to terms with it all. Translator every bit of news we got that night, every explosion was not something just happening outside. It was as if each one tore our soul apart. Reporter few know how or if their country will come together. Security is understandably tight as top Government Official ace tend these funerals. This is a nation that, yes, had been bracing itself for more violence, but they were expecting something in the form of yet another horrific isis attack or strikes carried out by the pkk. No one who we have spoken to said they ever imagined that an attempted military coup would be what brought the country to the brink of such instability. Amidthe pain at one of the mass funerals, calls for capital punishment, banned by turkish law. The president said he would take to relevant authorities and the decision cannot be delayed. A chilling promise. He does have significant support and most of those who oppose what they describe as his increasing authoritarian rule do not support removing him from power in a coup, but there are growing fears he will use this to purge the nation of any voices of dissent. Thousands have been rounded up in sweeping operations. Most members of the military, including the commander of the air base from where the u. S. Launches antiisis attacks. Also detained judges, prosecutors and others. And the government is demanding that the u. S. Detain an extradite, the cleric who the turkish government is behind the coup. An allegation hes denied. The people power that arguably saved erdogan is still in the streets continuing to heed his call. Creating an odd celebratory atmosphere as turkey is dragged into uncharted territory. Cnn, istanbul. Cnn is live in turkey this hour. Our International Diplomatic ed tor Nic Robertson is on the story outside a courthouse. 27 men accused of leading that coup are due in court there. Reporter one of those alleged coup leaders is a four star skrrl. We have seen video thats been authorized by the government and still photographs of this four star general. But this particular four star general looked as if hed been beat beaten. His ear was bandaged. Photographs of his arms show bad rope burns on his arms as if he was strung up behind him. All of the 27 with their hands tightly gripped behind their backs. What we understand from lawyers called upon to come and represent these 27 alleged coup leaders is that the lawyers havent been able to see them until now and wont be able to e e see them until they get in the courtroom. Another photograph has emerged of detainees. More than 6,000 people have been rounded up. Than process continues. The Justice Minister yesterday said 6,000 include several thousand judges and officers. We have seen photographs now that show or appear to show a number of those e detainees on their knees with their hands behind their backs stripped naked apart from their underwear and a horse riding stable. So it does raise questions about the legal due process thats being afforded to all those who accused of being behind this it coup. The 27 that are appearing in here no doubt where some of the public support and sympathy is and its where the government there was a group of people out here earlier who support president erdogan calling for the Death Penalty to be reinstated. We know the parliament are not far from here is going to be debating precisely that issue. That would be a reversal of the law here. But this is what erdogan supporters are calling for and something that he seems to support as well. Nic robertson for us covering these incredible time there is in turkey, thank you. The latest in the investigation in the deadly terror attack that happened in nice, france. Authorities there have arrested an albaniaen couple in connection with that massacre. Six people are still in custody. The exwife was released sunday without any charges. Authorities are trying to determine why mohamed lahouaiejbouhlel drove that truck that we have all seen by now a 20ton truck sbo a crowd gathered to watch fireworks thursday. 84 people, thats the death count now. 200 were injured. He received a photo from him before the attack that e showed the suspect among the crowds gathered there to watch the fireworks. The french president Francois Hollande is priding over a Security Council meet iing to discuss the Lessons Learned from this attack. The country now entering its third day of mourning. Cnn is live in nice, france, this hour. Mf max foster is at the site. Before we Start Talking about the Lessons Learned from this attack, lets talk about the scene there. A very poignant setting if you could explain to our viewers. Reporter this is the point at which most people died. The truck came zigzagging down this road and over the pedestrian area targeting the thickest parts of the crowd. The clusters outside a candy shop were children were. The attacker drove straight into it to kill people including children. Thats one of the most poignant things about these memorials that have struck up along the route. The cuddly toys laid for the children. 12 of them died in total. 28 others were injured. And all of those injured children lost a family member. So what you had was a family torn apart on this scene. They watch ed their parents die. If i come over here these smaller clusters are points at which each individual died. This is where the bloodstains were. If we look down the road, you get a real sense of the carnage that unfolded here. Each cluster of flowers and candles representing a body. So many of them children. So who was this murder . The man responsible for all of this. Heres will ripley. Mohamed lahouaiejbouhlel was a Delivery Driver with a wife, three children and a volatile personality. His lawyer in that case got him a sixmonth suspended prison sentence. I told myself i did my job, but if i had done my job badly he might be in prison and never done what e he did. He struggles with a sense of guilt and shock. He says his weight lifting heavy drinking client was not an extremist but did have a record of domestic violence. He was very much the stereotype of a petty criminal, he says. There was nothing that would have suggested in reality he was a jihadist. He says the attacker didnt really stand out in the crowd and wouldnt have raised any suspicion when prosecutors say he came here to the promenade. Not once, but twice in the days leading up to the attack. His brother says he even sent a foe e toe of himself looking happy in the crowd. Prosecutors also say he sent a text message to someone just before the attack telling them to bring more weapons. Police are questioning several people. A source tells cnn those who knew him say he began speaking in support of isis, the terror group called him one of its soldiers. He wasnt very intelligent, he says. I imagine he could have been easily influenced by religion. He was never overtly religious. Never on a watch list. Frances interior minister says he likely radicalized rapidly committing one of the worst terror attacks in recent history and nobody, not even his lawyer saw it coming. Will ripley, cnn, nice, france. People are just trying to find a way of expressing how they feel. This is the site where one person died literally. Its very weird being here, but this has taken shape in the form of pebbles. People writing messages from pebbles and putting them here. Each memorial is different. It has its own character. Which is strangely appropriate when you think a character died here. But we didnt know them. Most people coming here to look at them. But somehow its something deeply personal. We look over your shoulder and see one after another after another after another after another. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you, max. Im sure its comforting in some small way for the families to see the outpouring of love and support these memorials keep popping up. I cant imagine how they are dealing with this grief. Baton rouge is just the latest u. S. City forced to reckon with this senseless violence. Coming up, more on how the community is e reacting to the shootings of six Police Officers. And why the u. S. Political reality show is about to change dramatically as republicans converge on cleveland to officially name their president ial nominee. It is another day of breaking news here at cnn. Welcome back to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. Im natalie allen. And im george howell. Heres the latest from authorities. In the state of louisiana they are investigating the motives of a man who shot and killed three Police Officers. Three others wounded sunday in baton rouge. The gunman who is from missouri, belonged to several antigovernment conspiracy groups and had talked openly online about the need to, quote, fight back. Nick valencia has been updating us on the wounded officers. He has more now on the challenges facing that community. Reporter it has been a very dark time in baton rouge. Over the course of the last two weeks, this city has been torn from within by violence. Violence that began with the shooting death of 37yearold alton sterling at the hands of police. In the days that followed, we saw massive demonstrations that nearly turned violent. While no one was injured, there were plenty of arrests. Nearly 200 people were arrested just days after that police say they thwarted a plot to kill Police Officers by suspects that had had broken sbo a pawnshop. Though no one was charged, it underscored the tension and anxiety. Police remained on a heightened state of alert fearing they could be next. What happened in dallas could happen here. On sunday it did. Six Police Officers were shot. Three of them were fatally wound ed. They range in age and experience. The youngest being 32 years old. They talked about the fears and concerns of being a beat cop in the city saying that he loved baton rouge, but he wasnt sure the city loved him back. The oldest victim from east baton rouge sheriffs office. Hes currently in Critical Condition clinging to life. The police chief says the city is struggling with this tragedy. But will move forward. Were in mourn right now. Any time you louz an officer, its just traumatic. Not only all our officers with all the agencies, but with this community. Were a community thats been hurt iing for the last two week. And this didnt help. Its not helping. We have to pick ourselves up here. The men and women of the Police Department are hurting, but they are going to continue doing their job. I spoke to a u. S. Congressman from louisiana about the shooting and asked about why this would have happened and how the community is dealing with it. You can think about strategy. This whole shooting leads to nothing positive. It leads to no outcome no matter what group youre associated with. It was just stupid. And to have this type of death and injury in our Law Enforcement officers, the folks out there defending our community is senseless. I want to ask you again just from people that you talked to tod today, what are people saying about this and how is that community trying to heal. People are really just disgusted by what happened today. This isnt us. Right after we heard about this shooting, we were talking to people and said right then and there this is not somebody local. Its not the way we react and not the response of somebody from here. And we didnt know anything about this suspect. Only to find out later that he is from out of state. The protests that happened here after the alton sterling shooting for days there were peaceful protests. The police werent even in the vicinity and it wasnt until folks came here and began making this a more aggressive protest and actually tried to engage Police Officers. They came right here to have protested Police Headquarters rather than where they were gathering peaceful for days. The mayor of baton rouge spoke to don lemon earlier. He says its up to the public to support police who work to protect them. He said its up to the public to support the police that work to protect them. Nobody expected this to happen. We were winding down from the other activities with the Sterling Family. And then we pretty much had started getting into a mode of drawing down some of the officers that had been working 18 hours a day and saying we will relieve you now and cut back on some of the time youre having to put this. This morning the first thing we are hit in the face with another incident. I called upon the community to understand those People Killed and injured are First Responders. And i said now is our time to be First Responders for those who are victim os of the senseless killing and let them know we are standing there for them and we are going to be with them and we are not going to let this define baton rouge. The mayor of baton rouge there. Events in baton rouge and elsewhere are casting a long shadow over the race for the white house, but the stage is set in cleveland for the Republican National convention. Why donald trump is on the verge of defying conventional political wisdom. That story is coming up next. We also talked about the funerals that started in turkey for People Killed in the failed coup attempt. Cnn newsroom continues. Mr. Ingalls, hes not studying over here hes streaming my games. In turkey funerals have begun for the nearly 300 People Killed in a failed coup. At least 290 people are dead from that situation. More than 1400 jurd after military elements tried to seize power friday night. This as the government continues to crackdown on coup plotters. 6,000 people so far have been detained and arrests will continue. Among those arrested the commander of an air base there that u. S. Uses to launch airstrikes on isis. To talk more about the situation lets bring in International Correspondent ian lee. Good to have you with us this hour. As this investigation is underway, there are many funerals taking place throughout turkey and people culled in this failed coup attempt and the death toll continues to rise. Thats right. Here at these funerals, you hear the anger that people have. The family members, those here in turkey calling for the Death Penalty, which has been previously outlawed and erdogan is entertaining the idea of bringing back the Death Penalty for the people who are involved in the coup. They are still rounding up people even today were hearing that police raided the air u force academy and arrested a major and here in istanbul they are calling for people to take to the streets every night to show the show of force that people are still with the government. They dont feel like they are at ease quite yet. Theres extra security here. So still not out of the woods yet, george. You mentioned that these protests were shows of solidarity. People coming together to e show their support for the president there. Sat the same time, there are those that do oppose the president. At this time is there a sense that given what happened that president erdogan is getting a bump in popularity. This is very interesting because turkish politics are historically quite divisive. You have the opposition and then erdogan and the two rarely see eye to eye on anything but when it comes to this coup, they have been united. For the opposition, they really are the real losers in this whole situation because with erdogan, we are e seeing a bit of a bump in his popularity. He even said when he arrived in istanbul that this was a gift from god. What he mean, its hard to tell. But definitely seeing this will help improve his standing here, which he does have a lot of support. But for the opposition, losing on both ways because they dont like erd wan, but on the other hand, they united because they dont like the coup. They want to keep democracy moving forward here in turkey. So right now they are with him against the coup, but theres a lot of fear this will embolden him to crack down further on journalists and academics, any e he sees as an opposition to his rule. It also pointed out to e defang the military there. Ian lee live for us, thank you for your reporting. We begin a new week and all eyes in this country are on cleveland, ohio, as the Republican Convention is about to get underway in just a few hours. Well have a report for you, coming up. Recapping our top story in the state of louisiana. Police there trying to figure out the motive of a man who ambushed and killed three Police Officers in baton rouge early sunday. Three other officers were wounded in that attack. Police received the call of a man carrying a rifle dressed all in black walking along the highway. When police arrived, thats when the shooting started. Listen to part of the dispatch call. Shots fired. It is chilling to hear that call. Then the gunman died minutes later in a shootout with police. The situation in baton rouge was already very tense after the Police Shooting of alton sterling on july 5th. And just last week Louisiana State police announced they receive the threads against officers. President obama called the shoot k a cowardly and reprehensible assault and condemned all attacks on Law Enforcement. There are the three that died. We switch now to u. S. Politics and the race for the white house. The Republican NationalConvention Set to start in about nine hours from now. It will take over the quicken loans arena. Thats where the cavaliers play. Where donald trump is set to defy pundits and others who thought he could never win. His wife addresses the convention monday and his running mate will speak wednesday. Both presumptive nominees were responding to what happened in baton rouge. The shooting there their statements came adds trump made the tv rounds with his running mate. We get more from politics rep t reporter sara murray. Donald trump and Hillary Clinton sharply con demd the kill iing of Police Officers in baton rouge today. As another horrific shooting scrambles the political landscape. Clinton said theres no justification for violence shs hate, for attacks on men and women who put their lives on the line every day in service o our families and communities. Now our own people are killing our police. Our country is divided and out of control. The world is watching. The layest comes as trump steps out with his new running mate mike pence. They are the target most prepared to take on security threats. As trump reiterated his call to e declare war on isis us. We have to wipe out isis. One of the big reasons i chose mike, so many people have said party unity. Because im an outsider. Even as divisions on policy and on presentation emerge within the ticket. While pence decries negative campaigning, his running mate does. I call her crooked hillary. I didnt ask him to do it. But i dont think he should do it because its different for him. Reince priebus says those splits will elevate the ticket, not divide it. The difference in demeanor is very valuable. People want strength. People love that about donald trump. Its also good and reassuring to e see a diversity and style. The gop chairman echoing that sentiment in an interview with cnn. And insisting pence isnt harboring hard feelings that he had second thoughts. This is the most important decision i think that any president ial nominee makes. He wanted to take time and be sure about that selection. In the end he felt comfortable with mike pence. They are going to be a great president and vice president. Cnn senior political analyst Ron Brown Steen joins me from ohio. Thank you for joining us. I want to begin this interview with your reaction to the president and the candidates clinton and trump on the shooting deaths of these Police Officers in baton rouge. It is striking how often the president and the frequency with which the president is having to make these statements. You can see the weight of it on him physically as hes speaking, as we spiral through this horrible summer in the United States. For clinton, this is very much of a tight rope. He prer dominant focus really since ferguson has been on the question of Police Mistreatment or violence against africanamericans and in minority communities and here she is having to reassure americans that she has a balanced view of this challenge and certainly is unforgiving and condemning any of the kind of violence we are now seeing in the other direction. Then with trump you have a candidate who essentially is channelling the Richard Nixon 1986 argument that at a time of chaos, he is the one that can restore order. That has appeal for a a lot of voters. This is a very different country than it was in 1968. The demographically and trumps hard line may cost him as much with white voters as it gains him with blue collar white voters. So this leads us into the Republican Convention there in cleveland. What do you expect for donald trump this week . Is he going to be the same bombastic donald trump or is he going to be the teleprompter reader thats toned down . Whats at stake for him . I think the honest answer is who knows. I u think if we ask paul, who knows. What you get one day is not what you get the next. I suspect youll get something in between. Youll not get the sedated reading donald trump we have had on a few occasions and not get the kind of free form beat poet of the campaign trail we have had at other moments kind of saying whatever comes into his head. Whats at stake is trumps best single opportunity other than perhaps the first debate to erase what are the historically high negatives that hes dealing with. Particularly with the white collar whites. If you look at the election in broad terms, trump is on track to slightly underperform among nonwhite minority voters. Theres little he can do to improve that. Hes going to overperform among those working class white voters and the key fact in this campaign and the fact he has to change this it week if he can is hes also underperforming among white collar voters who question whether hes qualified to be president and also view him as racially divisive. If he cant make some of that go away, its going to be hard for him in the end. Ron brown steen in cleveland, thank you. Thank you for being with us here at cnn world headquarters. Early start is next for viewers here in the u. S. Why are you checking your credit score . You dont want to live with mom and dad forever, do you . Boo laughs im making smoothies well. Im not changing. So, how can i check my credit score . Credit karma. Dont worry, its free. Hmmmm. Credit karma. Give yourself some credit. Announcer this is cnn breaking news. We have new information on the three officers lost and new information on just how long the killer had been planning the attack. A very personal side of donald trump promised at the Republican National convention beginning today in cleveland. Can the partys divisive nominee bring the gop together . Good morning.
