What is interesting is right behind me, this is a checkpoint on the edge of a bridge and at the bottom is written the islamic state. They were here just nine days ago. If we pan over to the left, you can see a critical bridge. This is the main road to the city occupied by isis. When isis forces took this area, before they left, they blew up this bridge. Kurdish forces have rebuilt or rather built just up the river from here. Now earlier, we spoke with the commander who explained to us the difficulties they are facing. They say they have intensified since tuesday night strikes on syria as well. What they say is they are really lacking essential equipment like night vision goggles and helicopters. The commander was telling me all they have at their disposal is a lot of weaponry. They say he was saying some of the artillery dates back to 1937. They say they do appreciate the u. S. Air strikes, but they need a lot more help because some of the isis units are better armed than they are. John. And better funded which is why isis was hitting the Oil Refineries. Isis is still trying to take the city. Local fighters and fighters from turkey who crossed over to help, they have slowed down advance to a significant degree, but they say the fighting and bombardment is intense. People are still making their way to the border caring whatever they can through the hot and dry and dusty landscape. What this means for turkey, which you touched on there, its burden of dealing with the very large number of refugees from syria. It continues to grow. Hundreds of thousands in just a few days on top of the 1. 5 million that you mentioned that crossed over during the duration of the syrian civil conflict. When you talk to aid workers here, and turkish government officials, there is a feeling that turkey is left to carry this burden alone and other countries are not doing enough to help with the humanitarian crisis. This is a position which here is a checkpoint on a bridge on the road to mosul which is 30 kilometers up the road from here. Interestingly enough, still written on this checkpoint is islamic which translates to the islamic state. It is interesting. The soldiers do occasionally get incoming mortar rounds in the region. Peshmerga forces were able to push back the isis militants with the help of u. S. Air strikes. Now as you mentioned, there were two u. S. Air strikes outside of erbil on isis positions. Speaking to british commanders here, they say not only is the United States providing some air cover, but critical intelligence on where isis forces are. Now they do say they have noticed a change in the isis tactics. Before they were driving around in the open with, for instance with the humvees they were able to capture from the iraqi military. Now isis is hiding that kind of heavy equipment. They are moving around in civilian vehicles and keeping a lower profile because of the threat of u. S. Strikes. John. At the same time, lawmakers very wary not to make the same mistakes of the iraq war. They want to see concrete proposals with clear objectives and firmly rooted in int international law.
