Those on board now arguably the biggest unsolved mystery in aviation history. Could this data be part of the key that unlocks the mystery . Aviation correspondent Richard Quest has been closely following the release of the log. He has new developments from los angeles. Richard, you know, its pages and pages of data, a little bit of explanation. When you look at this with your International Aviation mind, what do you see in these numbers . Reporter what theyve done is break down the flight into various sections. So, we have the preflight section, which makes up a variety of pages, and thats quite important, christine, because that is, if you like, the calibration. Knowing, because they know where the plane is it was on the ground at kuala lumpur and they know where it was for the first 40 minutes of the flight. So, they take those early parts of the data and they use that as the calibrating moment and information for all the later pieces of socalled satellite handshakes. You then see in this when it loses its acars, its Communications Ability using the data link. And then finally, you see these satellite handshakes, where the plane and the satellite are saying hello to each other and where they are recording both the time that takes and the frequency differential, the socalled doppler. Now, Satellite Experts and engineers obviously, im not one of those they will be able to make sense of this. But what they wont be able to do is recreate inmarsats numbers. And the reason is because there are many other components, christine. Youve got the modem itself on the aircraft and the characteristics. Youve got the satellite, the way it wobbled up and down by 1,000 kilometers a day. And youve got the ground station. Inmarsat in releasing this information, as they told me exclusively, they are basically saying to the world, this is what we did. This is to show you the transparency of the operation. Its not inviting you to try and recreate it, not because we dont want you to but because you cant. You havent got the full range and raft of detail. We are showing pictures of you, your exclusive sitdown at inmarsat in london, where they did this analysis. So, tell us, the families have wanted to see this data because they say they want to analyze it. This data has been analyzed. It has been analyzed by inmarsat. This is the data used to determine where they think this plane went down. Reporter oh, not only that, and they are at pains again and again and again to say this this is not inmarsat on a frolic of its own. They gave this data to several other organizations. They wont say which ones. I believe them to be rolls royce, boeing, the ntsb, the aaib, and they will not confirm that. They gave this data to other organizations who then went away, made their own models, ran those models not just against mh370 but against dozens of other planes that were in the air at the same time and against planes on previous flights, and they always got roughly the same results. So, what inmarsat is quite clearly and bluntly saying is, its worked in all these cases. Why on earth, nobody has shown why its not working on this particular case. They have an extremely high level of confidence that theyre right, that the plane flew south and that the flight ended in the southern indian ocean. Coming up in a few minutes, were going to go live to beijing, where David Mckenzie is following the family reaction to this data being made public now, so stay with us for that. Want to go now to nigeria, where this morning a top official says they now think they know where hundreds of kidnapped girls are being held. These girls were abducted from a school more than a month ago, but so far, other than this video, theres been no sign of them. Now, with an international team, including americans, trying to track those girls down, nigeria is warning that a rescue might not be possible. So, what are we supposed to make of all this, this claim . Arwa damon is live in abuja in nigeria this morning. And arwa, explain this to us. Was this an offhanded remark by a defense official in nigeria, or is this a legitimate claim, hey, we really know where they are and we can get them when we want . Reporter well, thats exactly what weve been trying to figure out, placing numerous calls to various spokespeople within the ministry of defense, ministry of information, trying to ascertain exactly what sort of intelligence is behind that comment made by the defense chief of we know where the girls are but were not going to tell you just yet out of concern for any sort of operational security. Also saying that they would not be launching or would not be using force to try to rescue these girls. The u. S. , for its part, saying that it does not have solid evidence at this stage about where the girls actually may be, but they do have information, and thats pretty much what weve been hearing all along. They are believed to be somewhere in the northeastern part of the country, split up into smaller groups. Very difficult to navigate terrain, though, john, and this is very much boko harams birthplace. It controls huge swaths of territory throughout the northeastern part of the country. When it comes to a military operation, that would prove to be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, even for the most highly trained operatives, given the terrain that they would have to navigate to get to these girls, but also the very nature of boko haram, an organization so ruthless that when we met two boko haram informants last week, they told us that they had no doubt whatsoever that boko haram would be using these girls as human shields. So, great concerns that a military operation could actually lead to their deaths. Negotiations also phenomenally difficult, given that boko haram is not a topdown structure. There is not necessarily a single individual who could step forward for the government to negotiate with. Its been an incredibly agonizing wait for the families, for this country as a whole that has also been seeing boko harams attacks growing even more bold and more frequent since those girls were kidnapped over six weeks ago. A very difficult time at this stage for nigeria, and most certainly many challenges lying ahead, not just when it comes to bringing those girls back home, john. Difficult now. Add to that the confusion over these claims that they know where the girls are. Arwa damon, thanks so much. New details this morning about the days leading up to a terrifying massacre in southern california. Six Uc Santa Barbara students were killed. 13 other people were wounded before Elliot Rodger took his own life. Police say three of the people he murdered were his own roommates. And now a friend of his family says rodger had a longrunning feud with those roommates, claiming they were noisy and played video games at all hours. But the mother of victim weihan wang says her son planned to move out because it was rodger who was noisy, playing loud music in the middle of the night. Today, Uc Santa Barbara will hold a Memorial Service to remember the victims. Classes on campus are expected to resume tomorrow. A memorial day pledge from Vice President biden, vowing to restore the united statess sacred obligation to care for veterans. The Vice President speaking at the ride to recovery memorial bike challenge, amid the growing scandal at the department of veterans affairs. 26 va facilities now under investigation over allegations of doctored wait times. Rescue teams expect to be back in western colorado today looking for three men missing after this unbelievable landslide sent at least three miles of mud cascading down not far from the utah border. The three included a county road worker and his son that had traveled out to the region to check on damage from an earlier slide, and then the ground gave way. Theres a shear wall where it broke off of the mountain, and it pushed an enormous amount of land, you know, a half a mile forward. The sheriff says everyone is praying for a miracle, but the ground is so unstable right now, they dont want to risk any more lives during the search. A huge wildfire growing bigger in alaska. The funny river fire covers some 248 square miles, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. This about 60 miles south of anchorage. The fire is about 30 contained right now and authorities are hopeful that some rain forecast for later today and tomorrow might help slow down this blaze. For many in texas, memorial day was a washout heavy rain falling on a big part of the states gulf coast. These pictures are from victoria. Thats not far from Corpus Christi. Slammed by several inches of rain in just hours. We looked outside, and the rain was up to our sidewalk, close to our house. And in about 90 minutes, we had 6 inches of rain. Closer to houston, a lot of destruction as wet ground and high winds tore down trees, sending them flying right into homes. Luckily, no injuries have been reported. Want you to take a look at this, this incredible picture from north dakota. That is a tornado on the ground in watford city, not far from bismarck. It passed over the oil fields there. Huge oil industry in that area. It slammed into campers housing oil workers. More than a dozen trailers were hurt, one critically. Local Officials Say an early alert meant that most living there were able to get to safety before the tornado struck. Can you imagine being in a trailer and saying, hey, look at this thing coming . Unfortunately, yeah. At least this is the reason the warning time is so key. In that case they had the warning. Another warning, eastern texas still talking about the threat of Severe Weather. Today that shifts farther east, including waco all the way down to about Corpus Christi. So yes, the threat of tornadoes is still possible out there, but one of the bigger concerns out there is really going to be this heavy amount of rain. Lots of rain out there. Youll notice about 3 to 6 inches possible there, so you have the threat for flooding, especially in a lot of areas where they were short on rainfall, so that flooding threat is even higher. Very easy to see. Take a look at the water vapor. This shows you how much moisture is out there. Look at the entire eastern half of the country. You may notice it looks pretty moist . Thats the reason were going to be talking about a lot of showers pretty much anywhere eastern half of the country. Were calling it kind of soupy. One sim is kind of making its way through, the cold front here, and of course, the big low with the heaviest amounts of rain in the southeast. So, a lot of you will be noticing a change, especially out in the northeast. Yes, you have rain. Thats one side of the equation. Look at the temperature difference. Boston down to 55. Well, the families are saying a variety of different things, but for many of them, its a positive step to get this data fom inmarsat, to get a sense of the raw numbers that they used to come up with the conclusion that the plane dropped in the southern indian ocean, which is, of course, something the families want to really get a strong handle on. But at this stage, many Family Members weve spoken to just dont know who to trust. What did they do for this more than two months . They havent searched for anything they havent found anything. And we are suspicious for the first day that whether they are searching the right place, whether what they are telling us is true or not, because it is our loved one who is on the plane. With no direct evidence, we never believe it. Reporter well, john, the hardest thing for these Family Members is really, they havent been able to start on any kind of process of grieving. I just got off the phone with a trauma counselor here in beijing who said, you know, ideally, they have someone who they can trust to go through all the steps of getting this information, but because they feel they cannot trust anyone, its the actual Family Members who are doing this lobbying, and so, theyre delaying all those difficult processes that theyll have to go through at some point, and this process could take at least a year to get more closure. The fate of the plane and those on board still unknown. Could this now log, this log of released data, be the key that unlocks this mystery . Saima mohsin is live in kuala lumpur with more on this newly released information. Saima, whats in here . What does this tell us . Reporter well, john, to you and i and most people, this will just be a bunch of numbers, a series of crucial numbers, of course, that are the data communication logs between the plane and the satellite. And crucially, those numbers that are leading to the multinational search in the southern indian ocean. And its so important for the families to ask to see that, because they feel that all things are resting on this data. Everyone is relying on it. Just the other day, i spoke to the transportation minister, hishammuddin hussein, who said, well, look, were also relying on this data, and hopefully, its conclusive. If its not, were going to have to turn to other analysts. And actually, that is the concern and suspicion that is raised amongst Family Members, many of them talking to me throughout today since the data has been released, saying, well, it is just a bunch of numbers, but how do we know that we can rely on them . One of the crew members husbands, who didnt want to be named, told me that, look, im still hopeless. I have no hope. I dont believe in this data. I dont believe its 100 proof that this is where the plane is, and until i find debris, i wont have closure. Other Family Members saying that theyre very frustrated with the way authorities are dealing with this situation. Of course, you and i both know its taken so many weeks to release this data. Were constantly talking about why they havent, when they will. And another Family Member saying, well, do you know what, i dont care. I dont care about the data being released. What i want is to find out where the plane is and where my loved ones are. But of course, sarah bajc, the woman spearheading this campaign to put pressure on the malaysian authorities and inmarsat, the Satellite Company from the uk, to release this data, she says shes going to take it and share it with a panel of experts that shes been talking to over the last few months since the plane disappeared. Some of them have contacted her themselves. Others shes approached. And shes going to take it to them for what she feels will be an independent analysis of the data. And so, of course, some people feel this is going to open a pandoras box, if you like, of various theories of where the plane may well be, if not in the southern indian ocean. John . In nigeria demand this country this morning, skepticism about a new claim from the Nigerian Military that they know the location of hundreds of kidnapped girls. The u. S. Cannot confirm it, but a top nigerian official says the location is being kept secret while they work to bring the girls home and they cautioned, force is not an option. Arwa damon live in abuja, nigeria, this morning. Arwa, what should we make of these claims . Reporter well, there were comments made by the defense chief when he was addressing a group of protesters. Theres been some speculation as to whether or not it was just to try to appease people. Theres been a growing sense of frustration amongst the population here, and most certainly amongst the parents of those kidnapped schoolgirls. One can just imagine how agonizing this entire process has been. Now, the reason why military force is being taken off the table, at least at this stage, that very much boils down to the type of terrain that these girls most likely are being held in, also to the ruthlessness of an organization like boko haram. Launching a military operation against them when they have so many of these girls in captivity would prove to be nearly impossible, even for the most highly trained militaries. Two informants that we spoke to who know boko haram incredibly well, theyve lived amongst their members, say that they firmly believe that boko haram would not hesitate to use these girls as human shields. It leaves very little options when it comes to military maneuvering. Now, when it comes to some sort of negotiation, well, the Nigerian Government has said that they will not negotiate with them. Lines of communication at one stage did appear to be open, but they proved to be fruitless. And also, there is the reality that boko haram is not necessarily a topdown organization, and therefore, who specifically would you negotiate with to try to secure the release of all of these girls . So, while the parents, if it does prove to be true that the nigerians have pinpointed the location of the missing girls, could see some hope in that. Trying to actually safely secure their release is going to prove to be incredibly and sadly difficult. Difficult, indeed. And the world is still watching. Arwa damon for us this morning in abuja. Look at these pictures. At least three miles of mud came off a mountain, breaking trees and burying the ground underneath. Authorities say it moved with such force that the mud actually went down into a valley, then up and over a hill on the other side. The three men missing now included a county road worker and his son, who had traveled out to the region to check on damage from an earlier slide. Luckily, no injuries have been reported. And in north dakota, take a look at this. That is so scary. This is a tornado on the ground not far from bismarck, right in the middle of the oil country there. This twister hit a trailer camp housing oil workers in watford city, leaving nine people hurt, one critically. More than a dozen trailers were damaged. Now, authorities do say they got word of the storm early, so most of the people who lived in the camp, luckily, were able to get to safety. More Severe Weather today in farther through texas, talking about waco down through about Corpus Christi looking for strong thunderstorms, strong winds out there, and still that threat of isolated tornadoes will be out there today. But this is only going to be one side of the equation. One of the things were going to be looking at there is the heavy rain. Were looking at lots of rain out there, anywhere from 3 to 6 inches as the lows kind of spinning around here down to the south. So, with that, were talking about the potential for flooding. Notice even scattered showers spreading all the way into the northeast. Look how wet this is. There is a lot of moisture coming up from the gulf, so youre looking at this all funneling in. Pretty much no matter where you are in the eastern half of the country today, you do have the threat for scattered showers. Ukrainian forces now trying to regain control of a major airport there after it was seized by separatist gunmen, this as the new president elect makes an ambitious vow to unite ukraine after months of violent struggle. Senior International CorrespondentNick Paton Walsh has the latest live from donetsk this morning. And nick, a lot of confusion about just who controls this key airport this morning. Reporter well, the Ukrainian Government say they control all, and even the separatists can see that the National Guard of the ukraine army is on part of the territory, but they claim, the separatists, that they control part of it, too, so that fog of war still refusing to abate. The separatists accept they lost 35 militants. And also, the mayors office, the prokiev mayoral authorities here saying 38 separatists killed and 2 civilians as well. Four civilians injured as well in yesterdays clashes. That makes it one of the worst days weve seen since the crisis began. As you just came to me here in the center of donetsk, where life is going on as normal more or less, we heard a jet in the sky because commercial traffic has been stopped and the airport seized, seen as an intense battle yesterday. That can only mean the Ukrainian Military have jets in the air, and that often happens in support of their operations on the ground. Their officials telling us that their security operation against the separatists or terrorists, as they refer to them, is continuing right now. But the real question is, of course, who controls the airport. But where do we go next from here . Is this the beginning of a pitched battle for various strategic objects inside this otherwise previously peaceful city of donetsk, around which the unrests swell but didnt really impact daily life here, or is there a potential political way out . Yesterday morning everyone talked about negotiation between moscow, kiev and this new president , petro poroshenko. That vanished with the violence at the airport. Signs of many casualties on the separatist side. Whats that done to their will . John . Well have to wait and see as the smoke clears, literally, this morning from that airport. This morning, theyre finally getting it, satellite data from this flight, but will this information bring them any closer to solving the mystery of what happened . David mckenzie is in beijing following how the families are reacting. And you need a ph. D or you have to be some sort of aviation engineer to actually make sense of all this stuff. So, what are the families going to do with it, david . Reporter thats a good question, christine. And yes, you not only need to be an aviation engineer, youd have to have ph. Ds in several fields, and inmarsat says this data isnt really for people then to put their own calculations to. Its just to see how they came up with the decision that they say the plane went down in the southern indian ocean. But still, Family Members say theyre going to take these numbers and theyre going to put them to experts. It is very technical, and we are not experts, so we may ask some other people to kindly help us. Maybe some of them mathematicians or some other people in physics or Something Like that. And well ask them to help us analyze, again, about whether they are searching the right place. Reporter ultimately, the question is why do the Family Members want this information . Well, for two reasons. One, because they just dont trust the information theyre getting from any authority in the search for the plane. And secondly, they just want to get some kind of closure in this matter, because many of them have said until they physically can grasp some evidence, be it a photograph or a piece of wreckage, they just wont believe that their loved ones have passed away. And therapists have told me that delay in coming to some kind of closure is specifically psychologically damaging. And its such a mystery and they need to know what happened, and theres a lot of information and no information all at the same time. So frustrating. David mckenzie, thank you for that.
