Have taken before this plane vanished and how the families of those on board are now dealing with this breaking news. Good morning, everyone. Good to see you. Welcome to early start. Im john berman. And im christine romans. Its monday, april 7th. It is 4 00 a. M. In the east. Lets begin and welcome all of our viewers here in the u. S. And around the world beginning with this breaking news. Up first, the most promising lead yet in the search for flight 370. Overnight, a u. S. Pinger locator picked up two separate signals that could be coming from the planes socalled black boxes. One of them lasted for well over two hours. Now a u. S. Underwater drone is being brought in to find the source of those signals. Its not going to be easy, because if this is indeed coming from the missing jetliner, its 2. 8 miles below the surface of the ocean. Erin mclaughlin live from perth, australia, this morning. Erin, its certainly promise but theres still a lot of work to do. Bring us up to speed. Reporter hi, christine. Well, theyre saying these findings are absolutely extraordinary. The australian vessel, the ocean shield detecting not one, but two separate acoustic events. The first event lasting 2 hours and 22 minutes, the second event lasting 13 minutes, consisting of two separate signals, signals that authorities are saying are consistent with the cockpit voice recorder and the inflight data recorder, but at the same time here in perth, they are urging caution, saying it will take some time to verify these findings. Take a listen to what Angus Houston, the man spearheading this International Search effort, had to say at a press conference earlier today. I need to be honest with you, it could take some days before the information is available to establish whether these detections can be confirmed as being from mh370. In very deep oceanic water, nothing happens fast. Reporter now, at the moment, the ocean shield is currently in the area where it detected the signals. What theyre trying to do now, use that towed ping locator provided by the United States to detect possibly a third signal. If they get that third signal, their hope is theyll be able to triangulate a narrow search area in which they can deploy the bluefin 21, also provided by the United States. Its an unmanned Autonomous Vehicle, able to go underneath the water. The hope is that they will find some signs of physical wreckage. They say that that is when they will know for sure if this has anything to do with the missing plane. Christine . Oh, but erin, the water there so deep, some 2. 8 miles deep. Is this going to be a factor in the verification process . I mean, time is running out. Theyve got these important leads, but now theyve got to deal with the deep. Reporter well, if theyre able to find that third acoustic event and actually deploy this underwater Autonomous Vehicle that they have, depth certainly a factor. Houston in that press conference saying that 2. 8 miles down is at the very limits of the capabilities of this Autonomous Vehicle, and if for some reason it doesnt work, theyll have to bring more assets capable of handling that kind of depth, and of course, that will take more time. Christine . More time. All right, Erin Mclaughlin in perth for us. Thanks, erin. You know, if these signals are from flight 370s data recorders, its worth noting that american knowhow played a crucial role in finding this missing jetliner. The pinger that detected the signals and the underwater drone that will help find the plane, both manufactured by the same maryland firm. Lets get more on that from brian todd. Theres really two vehicles in question, the towed pinger locator that weve heard so much about that apparently located these signals, and also the bluefin 21, which is an autonomous underwater vehicle, both made by phoenix international, and we got access to phoenixs facilities here not far from d. C. , near largo, maryland. Thats their headquarters. Thats where they made all of this very sophisticated equipment. The way it works that the towed pinger locator goes down and sweeps that area first. The towed pinger locator can go down as far as 20,000 feet below the surface of the sea. It can detect the pinger from up to 2 miles away. It can detect the pinger even if the pingers signal is fading. So, these developments overnight and midday there in the region are very encouraging. Of course, we know it does not necessarily mean that theyve found the black box signal, but it is encouraging. Now, the next step, now that theyve gotten these signals, is to send that autonomous underwater vehicle, the bluefin 21, down to that area where the signals were picked up. The bluefin 21 looks like a torpedo. It goes down to significant depths, and it sweeps that area looking for a debris field, looking for the black box, trying to take both audio and physical video images of whatever is down there. Its got sidescan sonar capability, its got picturetaking capability, not video, but still pictures. It will sweep over the area, take a series of still pictures, transmit it to the vessel on the surface, so they can kind of see what theyre looking at, don. Thats the sequence. First the pinger locator finds the signal, then the bluefin 21 goes down and sweeps the area, so thats probably what theyre preparing to do right now. Our thanks to brian todd for that information. So much going on this morning in the search for flight 370. Lets check in now on the investigation. A senior malaysian government source tells cnn the jetliner appears to have deliberately skirted indonesia on its path toward the indian ocean, taking a route that suggests an intent to avoid radar detection by whoever was at the controls at the time. Lets bring in our Senior International correspondent, Nic Robertson. Hes in kuala lumpur. Nic, whats going on with this . Reporter well, john, for the investigators, this is important, that they can draw some more conclusions about who was in control of the aircraft, what they were doing and what their intent was. What the malaysian officials are telling us is that with help of neighboring countries, theyve been able to look at the different radar plots and talk to these Different Countries about what their Radar Systems have seen. What theyre able to say now is that the plane flew, came back across the malaysian peninsula and then flew northwards around the top end of indonesia before turning southwards down towards the south indian ocean where that search effort is ongoing right now. And they also say that they believe from the way that it flew, from the position that it flew, that it was trying to avoid indonesian radar, and the conclusion they are drawing is that the pilot or whomever was at the controls of the aircraft was intentionally trying not to be seen by that radar, trying to fly to a remote place. This is a conclusion theyre drawing. This is allowing them, if you will, to sort of narrow down in their investigation into who might have been responsible, what was going through their mind and why. John, christine . Nic, it was confusing for several weeks because the indonesians werent releasing any radar data. They didnt say they had any sign at all of flight 370 flying over their air space. This at a minimum, i suppose, if its to be believed, would indicate why the indonesians did not pick them up on radar. Reporter it certainly would, and the indonesians have said that. They said, no, there was no indication that it had flown across their territory. We now know from this source, to the malaysians satisfaction, to the investigations satisfaction, they have been able to now feel comfortable with that information. They knew where the aircraft was flying, approximately. They knew that from the inmarsat data. There were various speeds from that inmarsat data, that it could have been flying, indicating that it might have clipped the tip of indonesia, might have avoided it a little bit, but this lack of radar information from indonesia allows them to now more precisely say, okay, this aircraft that whoever was flying it was taking evasive measures, and that, for the investigators, is important, john. All right, Nic Robertson for us in kuala lumpur. Thank you so much. And we do expect a News Conference live from kuala lumpur from the malaysian transportation minister on all the updates, including the discovery of these new pings. Thats coming up in our next hour. About an hour and 20 minutes from now. Many flight 370 family members say they need to see hard proof before they give up hope that their loved ones are still alive. Many of them left malaysia and returned home to beijing over the weekend, hoping to hear something concrete about the fate of their family members soon. Our Pauline Chiou is in malaysia this morning. These developments must be so difficult for families who still dont have the tangible evidence theyre looking for. Reporter it is so difficult. And christine, were seeing them still exercise a lot of caution. One woman today saying of the newest developments, it is a positive lead, but its just that, a lead, and we are thankful for the international effort. Another woman whose husband is on the plane, said i have no reaction to this until i see physical evidence. So, youre seeing this tone of caution, and thats an ongoing theme that weve been hearing throughout the weekend. When the initial reports of these pings came out on saturday, we spoke with a relative, steve wang, whose mother was on the flight, and he said that he understands what these pings mean and hes coming to grips with the reality of what may have happened to this airplane. Maybe this is a time, maybe the next couple of days, the next couple months, the next couple years, we will find the ending, but there will be a time that it will end. So, to me, i dont want that it is mh370, but if its the facts, i have to face it. Reporter and to face the facts, to face this new information, it is not easy. This whole ordeal has been so stressful for the past month that the Chinese Government is worried about the health of all of these relatives. So, christine on sunday, even today, the government offered to take many relatives to the outskirts of beijing at their own cost, at the governments cost, to help them get some fresh air and also go to a sanatorium to get a health check, because some of these relatives are elderly, some of them have fallen sick. Many of them have not gotten enough sleep because of all of this stress. So, the government has decided to at least check on them, to try to make sure everything is okay, at least physically from a health point of view, but its difficult to take this mental break, especially when youve got this new information coming forward, christine. Ill say. All right, Pauline Chiou. Thank you so much for that, pauline. Were covering the breaking news on missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 all morning, including this new detection of possible pings by u. S. Equipment. But first, the trial resumes for the olympic hero accused of murder. The defense is calling its first witness. Will Oscar Pistorius take the stand . When might this happen . Will he explain why he shot and killed his model girlfriend . Were live, next. Welcome back to cnns breaking News Coverage of the search for flight 370. Officials calling it their most promising lead yet. Two separate signals consistent with black box frequency, two separate signals detected overnight by a u. S. Navy pinger locator being towed by an australian ship. An american underwater drone now being called in to assist with this search in waters that are 2. 8 miles deep. Want to get back to that coverage in just a moment, but we do have other news this morning that is developing as we speak. After a long hiatus, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial is under way again. Pistoriuss defense beginning its case this morning by calling a forensic pathologist to the stand. Pistorius is expected to testify, though it is not clear when. Cnn legal analyst kelly phelps joins us live from pretoria in south africa this morning. Good morning, kelly. Reporter morning. Give us the latest from the courtroom. Tell us about this pathologist whos testifying. Reporter well, the pathologist who is the defenses Expert Witness is an incredibly experienced pathologist. Hes been the state pathologist on three separate occasions. Hes conducted over 25,000 autopsies within his career. So, hes certainly a reliable Expert Witness for the court. And so far, he has pointed to two key inconsistencies with the states pathology evidence. The first relates to the gastric evidence, which the states relied on in order to suggest an inconsistency with pistoriuss version of events, that they had gone to bed at 10 00, suggesting that Reeva Steenkamp had eaten at about 1 00 in the morning. The second issue that hes been focusing on is whats called wound ballistics. Essentially, what hes doing with this evidence is striking doubt into the states version of events that the gunshots would have been fired in a more slow succession. So, hes supporting the defense theory that pistorius had used double tipping, which means a very quick succession of shots, and thats crucial, because if those shots had been fired quickly, and considering the overwhelmingly mortal nature of them, it is highly unlikely that Reeva Steenkamp would have been the person who was heard screaming. Quickly, i think one of the things a lot of people are waiting to see is Oscar Pistorius on the stand. That could happen tomorrow, the next day, i suppose even later today. Whats the most important thing for him to do when he takes the stand . Reporter well, the most important thing for pistorius when he takes the stand is that, first of all, hes seen to be consistent with the version of events that theyve put on the record as early back as bail, and secondly, that he comes across as sincerely and believable. After all, his entire defense rests on essentially his own perception on the night in question, a mistaken perception, he claims, that he was under attack from an intruder. And when the court needs to determine whether they believe this version of events, that comes down to how consistent hes been in relaying it to the court and how sincere he is in retelling that version. All right, kelly phelps, thank you so much for being with us, at the site of the Oscar Pistorius trial, where, again, we expect pistorius to take the stand in the coming days. Two separate signals consistent with black box frequencies detected overnight by a u. S. Navy pinger locator thats being towed by an australian ship. Now, an american underwater drone is now being called in to assist with this search. These waters, these waters are 2. 8 miles deep, but the most promising, promising developments yet. We will bring you all the latest developments from perth in just a moment. First, despite threats from the taliban, voters in afghanistan turned out in droves this weekend to elect a new president. There were some reports of violence and bloodshed, but up to 7 Million People were able to successfully cast their votes. Thats an amazing number. Lets bring in anna coren live from kabul in afghanistan this morning. Anna, whats the latest . Reporter yeah, john, this historic election, as you say, was an overwhelming success. Theres just a real sense of pride here in afghanistan at the moment. More than 60 of eligible voters turned out. Thats 7 million afghans. You know, despite the rain, despite the recent attacks, highprofile attacks that we have seen over the past several weeks, and those taliban threats. The taliban said they were going to do everything within its force to disrupt elections. Afghans turned out to polling stations across the country to cast their vote. These people desperately want change, john. They want to see their new president come in, bring peace, bring stability. Now, this was always going to be a major test for the Afghan National security forces, and im very happy to report that there were no major incidents. Its really quite remarkable. We were anticipating a very bloody day. There were isolated incidents around the country, but by and large, this was generally an extremely peaceful election. Certainly a good news story to come out of this country, which we both know is very rare. But as we know, the true test for these police, for these military will be after u. S. Forces withdraw at the end of the year, whether they can stand on their own two feet, fight the insurgency and move this country forward. You know, last week, we caught up with isaf commander general dunford, and he said that hes confident that the three top contenders for this president ial race, whoever is president will sign that critical bilateral Security Agreement that obviously president karzai did not sign, created an enormous strain between afghanistan and the United States. But with that Security Agreement, that there will be an enduring u. S. Presence. So, we will see troops still here on the ground post 2014, john. They still have to count the votes, anna, but as you said, the people of afghanistan showing they want change and are willing to work for it. Anna coren for us in kabul. Thanks so much. New signals detected from what investigators believe could be the wreckage of missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Just hours ago, investigators revealing search crews have now picked up two signals, two signals consistent with those emitted by the planes black box recorders. Right now, a desperate race against time to locate the flight data recorders before the batteries run out. Frustrated families of those on board the missing plane are reeling from this news this morning, this as new questions are raised about the path the vanished jetliner was taking before it disappeared. We have a team of reporters covering all of these angles live this morning. Welcome back to early start. Im christine romans. A busy morning. And im john berman. 32 minutes after the hour. A lot going on. We will start with what some people are calling the most promising lead yet in the search for flight 370. I have to say, this surprised a lot of people overnight. A u. S. Pinger locator picked up two separate signals that could, could be coming from the planes black boxes. One of these signals lasted for well over two hours. So, now a u. S. Underwater drone is being brought in to help find the source of those signals. Now, this will not be easy, not easy at all, because if this is indeed the missing jetliner, the ocean there is more than 2 1 2 miles deep. Erin mclaughlin joins us live now from perth, australia. Erin, whats the latest . Reporter hi, john. Well, encouraging, extraordinary, promising, all words theyre using to describe this find. Angus houston is the man responsible for this multinational search effort. He gave a press conference earlier today in which he detailed the nature of these signals detected on board the Australian Ocean shield. Take a listen to what he had to say. The towed pinger locator deployed from the Australian Defense vessel, ocean shield, has detected signals consistent with those emitted by aircraft black boxes. Two separate signal detections have occurred within the northern part of the defined search area. The first detection was held for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. The ship then lost contact before conducting a turn and attempting to reacquire the signal. The second detection on the return leg was held for approximately 13 minutes. Reporter houston went on to say that these signals are consistent with the characteristics of an inflight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder. So, incredibly promising development, but at the same time, theyre urging caution. All of this still needs to be verified. They still need to find actual physical wreckage from this plane. And to that end, the ocean shield, the australian vessel, is still out in the area in which they detected these signals using that u. S. Provided towed ping locator, trying to detect a third acoustic event. The hope is, if theyre able to get a third acoustic event, theyll then be able to triangulate those signals to narrow down to a specific search area. They will then deploy the u. S. Provided bluefin 21, an autonomous underwater vehicle, to go down underneath the ocean and try and find this physical wreckage. Then and only then, houston says, will they be able to verify that this actually comes from the missing flight mh370. That will not be easy, erin. The water there, as we said, nearly 3 miles deep. Did they give any indication about the discrepancy between these pings detected by the australian vessel with u. S. Equipment and then the pings they had heard earlier in the weekend from the chinese vessel, about 375 miles away . Reporter well, houston was asked about it. He said he does not believe that those pings are from this same location. He said he does not think that they are in any way related, although he did say that it is possible that were talking about very deep waters here, and sometimes, noise can travel in a funny manner, but not looking likely that these two occurrences are in any way related at this time, john. Erin mclaughlin for us. Nearly 3 miles deep the water. That is a very complicated process, just one step to finding flight 370. Thanks, erin. Now to the latest on the investigation. A senior malaysian government source telling cnn this jetliner appears to have deliberately skirted indonesia on its path toward the indian ocean, taking a route that suggests an intent to avoid radar detection by whoever was at the controls. Want to bring in Senior International correspondent Nic Robertson. He is in kuala lumpur. And this is an important, new detail for the investigation from that standpoint. Tell us what investigators are saying. Reporter well, what theyre saying is they believe that the person that was flying the aircraft was intentionally flying around indonesia, trying to avoid its radar detection, stay on the outer edge of that, and then fly off, as we now know, into the south indian ocean to a very, very remote area. It gives the investigators the impression the person at the controls knew what they were doing, had the aircraft fully under control, was intentionally trying to avoid that radar detection, and beyond that, fly the aircraft to a very remote location. So, for investigators, that is an important part of the puzzle of trying to understand what has happened. But also, part of that is understanding the psychology. Whoever is at the controls. And so, for the investigators right now, this is useful information. It ties together pieces of data they already had, but very important step for them right now, christine. All right, Nic Robertson. Thank you so much for that. Certainly very Interesting Development in the investigation. All these developments for the families so hard to hear. They say they need hard evidence before they make up their minds whether to give up hope, continue hope that their loved ones still might be alive. Many of them left malaysia and returned home to beijing over the weekend, wanting to hear something concrete about the fate of their family members, and they want to hear that soon. Our Pauline Chiou is live in beijing this morning. Pauline, what can you tell us . Reporter yeah, thats true. They still want hard evidence, concrete proof. And many of the relatives are saying after this News Conference from australia that, sure, it is a lead, but thats all, its just a lead. They want confirmation. And one woman said, dont even bother me with this information, because i wont even react until you show me physical proof. So, thats the sentiment that were seeing here. And in fact, just a couple of days ago, john, i was talking with one woman who said she wants to see the body. She said theres an old chinese saying, if a person is alive, i need to see the person. If a person is dead, i need to see the body. And many of these relatives are saying the same thing. Sure, this may be focused, in terms of the search area, but just show me something, show me a body, show me debris from the plane, show me markings from mh370. And until they see that, many of these relatives just will not close the door on the possibility that Something Else had happened to this plane. John . They want to see some concrete evidence. And of course, it is important to note, they have not spotted any debris yet that might be associated with flight 370. Our Pauline Chiou live in beijing this morning. Thanks so much. All right, happening now, the defense begins in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial. Can his team convince the judge that the olympic hero did not murder his model girlfriend, but that this was all a terrible accident . Were live with who is taking the stand. Thats next. Welcome back to cnns breaking News Coverage of the search for flight 370. Officials are calling this the most promising lead yet. Two separate signals consistent with black box frequencies detected overnight by a u. S. Navy pinger locator being towed right now by an australian ship. Now, an american underwater drone is now being called in to assist with the search. The waters there, though, where this was detected, nearly 3 miles deep. After a tenday delay, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial under way again. The blade runners defense beginning its case this morning by calling a forensic pathologist to testify. Cnn legal analyst kelly phelps live for us this morning from pretoria, south africa. Kelly, any indication when pistorius might be called to testify . Reporter we certainly expect pistorius to testify once cross examination and reexamination of the pathologist is finished. The defense alluded this morning that after the special circumstance was taken into account to let the pathologist go first for family reasons, the defense team said they would then continue with the normal order of their case. And normally in South African criminal law, if a defendant is going to testify, an accused person, they will be the first to testify, so we do assume that he will be next on the stand. What are we hearing from the pathologist, and i guess, how is that fitting into how we think the defense is going to look like . Reporter well, were hearing some crucial evidence from the pathologist at the moment with regard to two key contentions that the state made in their case through their pathological evidence. The first relates to evidence of gastric emptying. The state relied on that in order to suggest that Reeva Steenkamp had last eaten at about 1 00 in the morning, and that contradicted pistoriuss version of events, that they had gone to bed at about 10 00 in the evening. The pathologist began his testimony by citing very well recognized, well regarded International Sources that essentially described evidence around gastric emptying as mere speculation, therefore, casting doubts on the states reliance on this. And secondly, weve been hearing about the order of gunshot wounds, and this is being done in order to cast doubt on the states reliance on evidence of having heard Reeva Steenkamp screaming. Essentially, theyre saying that the gunshots were fired in such quick succession, as you can tell from the wound ballistics on her body, that its very unlikely that it would have been Reeva Steenkamp who even had the capacity to scream at that stage. Kelly, i know that just moments ago, really, Oscar Pistorius put his hands on his head, clasped his fingers behind his head when they were describing the kinds of injuries she had. So, this is still very dramatic, very difficult for the defendant. Kelly phelps, thank you so much. About a quarter until the hour right now, and we have new clues and new pings, intensifying the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 this morning. Investigators believe they could be closer to finding the vanished jetliners black boxes, but this will not be easy. There could be serious trouble ahead. Were live with the kind of challenges that they face in this crazy ocean terrain, next. Welcome back to cnns breaking News Coverage of the search for flight 370. Officials calling this their most promising lead yet. Two separate signals consistent with black box frequencies detected overnight by a u. S. Navy pinger locator being towed by an australian ship. An american underwater drone now being called in to assist with this search in waters, john berman, that are 2. 8 miles deep. Yeah, not a lot of people have been to this part of the ocean. Wow. Its very, very remote, about 1,000 miles off the coast of perth, australia. This is where the analysts now believe that flight 370 may have ended. And as i said, the conditions there are simply treacherous. Our next guest knows this region well. Eric rays is an oceanographer with the Ocean Institute of Western Australia and joins us live via skype from perth. Were so interested to talk to you, eric, because youve recently been in a Research Vessel very close, if not right on this location. You can tell us exactly what the terrain is like underneath the ocean. Very deep. What kind of challenges are we looking at here . As you just mentioned, absolutely the vast remoteness of the site. Weve been almost exactly to the site where the signal was recei received. We dropped a mooring looking into the largescale appearance of the indian ocean over there in cooperation with the university and noaa, the american atmospheric and oce Oceanographic Agency looking at the currents and this took us seven days nonstop teaming from perth, so very, very remote. Talk to us about what it means when we say nearly 3 miles deep. That seems almost impossibly deep. When you do get to the bottom, whats the terrain like underneath . On the ocean terrain so far offshore, i have not really an idea, but were talking about 5,500 meters depth. That is just half of the biggest Mariana Trench where last year, two years ago where deep down the submarines, the pressure down there is so tremendous. Its, yeah, just incredible. I have no idea how the terrain exactly will be, whether it will be caves or big mountains, but i think its going to be pretty flat. Please dont quote me on that one, because we are more interested in the largescale currents that are occurring over there. So, lets talk about those currents, eric. So, when were talking about trying to find the location of black boxes, data recorders, potential wreckage, and then were talking about trying to find any remnants of this plane floating on the top of the ocean, how are they going to try to use any debris on the surface of the ocean to pinpoint further where any wreckage might be . Yes, in the northern part, there are two major currents. You have the east general current, which is coming down in the more tropical current, both flowing easterly and feeding into the current that is almost an eastern boundary current as it is flowing downwards, rather than if you have looking at nigeria or in peru, where these currents are moving upwards. These two currents are going together and flowing down along the west australian coastline. Were talking thats more part of the african asian monsoonal rate to be able to better predict ocean currents, where they are going, how they affect the climate, temperature of those upper boundary currents of the ocean. So, its a very complex structure over there. Thats why there is and unfortunately, such an understudied region. Eric raes, thank you so much for helping us understand this area of the ocean, one of the most remote on earth, describing the currents there for us, which could, perhaps, explain why they have not been able to locate any debris in this area, because the current could have just swept anything away. Eric, thank you so much. We are covering the breaking news with this discovery of possible pings from flight 370. There is other breaking news as well. Just hours ago, investigators revealing black box detectors have received more signals consistent with those deployed by the planes flight data recorders. Right now search planes and ships moving in to find those black boxes before their batteries run out and they go silent forever. Live, Team Coverage on this search. Plus, troubling new questions about the route the pilots may have taken before this plane vanished and how the families on board are dealing families of those on board are dealing with all of this new information. Good morning. Welcome to early start. Im christine romans. And im john berman. It is monday, april 7th, 5 00 a. M. In the east. We welcome our viewers here in the United States and around the world, and we do begin with the breaking news, whats being called the most promising lead yet in the search for flight 370. I think this came as a surprise to a lot of people. Overnight it was announced that a u. S. Pinger locator has detected two separate signals that could be coming from the planes black boxes. And one of these signals, one of the detections lasted for well over two hours. So, now a u. S. Underwater drone is being brought in to help find the source of those signals. This will not be easy, because if, in fact, these signals were coming from the planes black boxes, they could be coming from a depth of some 2. 8 miles. Erin mclaughlin joins us live now from perth, australia, this morning. Erin, as i said, this announcement coming just a few hours ago. You could tell really by the tone of the voice that everyone was using that this could be significant. Reporter well, theyre saying this is an extraordinary find, not one, but two separate acoustic events detected on board the australian vessel, the ocean shield. The first [ inaudible ] for 13 minutes comprising of two separate signals, signals everyone. Now, we talked to family members about these possible pings. Ever since the initial reports came out on saturday local time. We spoke with steve wang, whose mother is on the plane. He says he is reaching that point, or he is accepting the reality of what probably happened to the plane. Maybe this is a time, maybe the next couple days, the next couple months, the next couple years, we will find the ending, but there will be a time that it will end. So, to me, i dont want that it is mh370, but if it is the facts, i have to face it. Reporter i also asked steve what his thoughts are as he approaches the onemonth mark of the missing airplane. And john, he said, listen, it doesnt matter if its day 29, day 30, day 31, day 32. He just said every day is excruciating. Every day is painful. And we just need to find out what happened. John . All right, Pauline Chiou live for us in beijing. Just cant imagine what the families are going through. Thanks, pauline. Welcome back to cnns breaking News Coverage of the search for flight 370. A lot of developments over the last few hours. Officials calling this the most promising lead yet, two separate signals consistent with black box frequencies detected overnight by a u. S. Navy pinger locator, which is being towed by an australian ship. Now an american underwater drone is being called in to assist with the search. It will not be easy. The waters where these signals were detected are 2. 8 miles deep. All right, after a long break, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial under way again. The blade runners defense beginning its case this morning by calling a forensic pathologist to the stand. Pistorius is expected to testify. Cnn legal analyst kelly phelps live from pretoria, south africa, this morning. Kelly, any indication when he might take the stand . Reporter well, theres a very good chance that hell end up taking the stand today. We expect that he will be the next witness after the pathologist is finished. Harry nell has been crossexamining the pathologist for some time already, and he really only has two or three points on which to cross examine the pathologist. Hes already covered largely two of those points, so we dont expect that it would take up the whole day for him to finish cross examination, in which case, pistorius may be on the stand by this afternoon. And so many people are really interested in what hes going to say, because its been an emotional time for him in the courtroom. I mean, already, already today weve seen him sort of clasp his hands behind his back or behind the back of his head as theyve talked about the injuries on Reeva Steenkamp. How important is it for his demeanor and what he says on the stand here for his defense . Reporter the most important thing when he takes the stand is that he is, first of all, consistent in terms of what he is saying with all of his previous versions of events as far back as the bail hearing, and secondly, that he comes across as an authentic and sincere witness. In terms of his emotional state, sure, that might give some sympathy towards him, but because we dont have a jury trial and its a judgeled system, its very unlikely that that kind of sympathy would be a determining factor in the judges mind. So, really, the two most important things have always been and remain consistency and believability. All right, kelly phelps live for us this morning. Of course, we will be following this trial all day and will check in as soon as events warrant. Thank you, kelly. Some other news now. The family of one of the victims of the shooting last week at ft. Hood says she was friends with the shooter, ivan lopez. Private deon josephs was shot in the neck by lopez. An american underwater drone now being called in to assist with the search in waters that are 2. 8 miles deep. Well get to this search in just a few minutes. First, some news here at home. It looks like it might finally be spring for real. Indra petersons has a look at the weather. Hey, indra. Hey, indra. Hi, good morning. Unfortunately, that also means the spring severe type of weather. Were still dealing with it, been dealing with it all weekend long. Look at the reports weve seen, even this morning, eight reports of a tornado, most likely all stemming from the same tornado. Regardless, its an active situation as the system pushes east. Look at all of this moisture funneling in out of the southeast today. So a heavy rain is going to be one side of the equation. You can actually see, we still even have tornado watch boxes, so a very serious situation is on hand with very unstable air and all that moisture kind of fueling into the south. Easy to see, theres that warm, moist air, but the other side of this, of course, not just the rain thats going to be falling, but the threat for Severe Weather expected, especially through the afternoon again today, really from raleigh through mobile. Thats going to be the highest risk, although a slight risk. We still have to watch out for the threat for tornadoes, especially considering it looks like we already had one early this morning. Heavy monsoon rains out there, 1 to 2 inches. Into tomorrow, well see the low cruise up the coastline, eventually bringing rain into the northeast. So heavy rain for the next several days. The other side of it is going to be the strong winds. Strong winds starting off in the southeast, eventually kind of making their way, migrating to the northeast as that low cruises up the shoreline. So, its spring, but that doesnt always mean its a good thing. Those arent snow totals. All i care about is that youre not showing me snow totals anymore. For once, i am with you on this one. Thanks, indra. Breaking news this morning. Promising, new leads revealed just hours ago in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370. Weve got live, Team Coverage. Lets go right to malaysia, a News Conference from officials there on the news of pings detected overnight. Lets listen to the Malaysian Defense minister. To start off the press conference this evening, i hereby call in hishammuddin bin hussein, acting minister of transport, to deliver his statement. Sir, if you would please do us the honor. Ladies and gentlemen, it has been 31 days since mh370 went missing. As we enter this new week of the search operations, there have been a significant lead in the search for the missing aircraft. As stated by the joint Agency Coordinating center in perth earlier today, the towed pinger locator deployed from hmas ocean shield has detected signals consistent with those emitting by aircraft black boxes. While they may be a step closer to us finding mh370, there are still many steps to be taken before we can positively verify that these signals are from mh370. This morning, Prime Minister razis rezak had a call from Prime Minister tony abbott who updated him on the signals detected. According to the joint Agency Coordination center in perth, two separate signal detections have occurred, 1,650 kilometers northwest of perth, within the northern part of the defined search area. The first detection was held for approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. Hmas ocean shield then lost contact while conducting a turn and attempting to reacquire the signal. The second detection on the return leg was held for approximately 13 minutes. On this occasion, two distinct pinger returns were audible. Significantly, as stated by Angus Houston, this would be consistent with transmissions from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. Separately, the chinese ship has also detected similar signals twice. In line with nations consistent stand on refining and corroborating evidence since day one of the operations, i would strongly urge all of the parties concerned to treat this information responsibly and to give time and space for the authorities to conduct further verification. Malaysia also concurs with the statement by Prime Minister abbott that all parties must be cautious about unconfirmed findings and making conclusions. Ive also personally spoken to air chief martial retired Angus Houston earlier today, who has confirmed the above and has briefed me on the Ongoing Operations based on information received from all parties concerned. Despite all this, we are cautiously hopeful that there will be a positive development in the next few days, if not hours. As i have elaborated last saturday, the government, in order to streamline and strengthen our ongoing efforts, has established three ministerial committees, namely, the next of kin committee, led by the deputy minister of foreign affairs, the technical committee, led by abla, the deputy minister of transport, and the deployment of assets committee, led by abdul raheem bakrie, the deputy minister of defense. These three committees have started their respective tasks and will be reporting to the public on their findings in due course. I would also like to confirm the efforts to appoint an independent investigator in charge, based on icao standards to lead an Investigation Team is under way. Three groups have been established, namely, an Airworthiness Group to look at issues such as maintenance records, structures and also of systems, an Operations Group to examine things such as flight recorders, operations and meteorology, and medical and Human Factors group to investigate issues such as psychology, pathology and survival factors. We are in the process of identifying to include accredited countries into this Investigation Team. Ladies and gentlemen, the new developments over the last few hours has been the most promising lead we have had. I urge all malaysians and International Community to unite in their prayers and not give up hope. We will continue with all our efforts to find mh370. Thank you. All right, ladies and gentlemen, q a session will start with the local media first. Please, second row. [ speaking Foreign Language ] how reliable are the signals then, from the briefing that you have been getting, how confident you are that we will conclude this search with a positive result . Unless corroborated and verified. We have been through a real roller coaster ride based on leads that we have received. But as usual, some leads are much more positive than others. Speaking to Angus Houston earlier today, i am more optimistic than some of the leads that we have had, so i would like everybody to continue to pray, and this is something that is much more positive than others, but yet, im very cautious about saying any more than that. All right. Sir. Yes. Row three. Yes, please. Would you stand up and identify yourself, please, sir . [ speaking Foreign Language ] should the black box being recovered from the aircraft, who will have the ownership over the black box, and who will lead the investigation of the black box . I have spoken to the attorney general this morning. We will follow acao practices, and we will inform developments in respect of investigations based on whatever we find in due course, but our forecast rigcus is to find the black box first. All right. Yes. Last row. Hi. Su ling. Regarding the ping detector, its detected in the loneliest place on earth. So, what else could it be if it not belongs to the mh . And also, since it is also consistent with the frequency, is there any possibility it could be anything else but the black box . And also secondly, is there a possibility for the plane to have landed on the water in one piece, giving it a few minutes to actually probably deflate the lifeboats, and also, if so, is the operation also focusing on looking for survivors on life crafts and not just focusing on looking for the black box . I will only answer the part about the survivors, because the others are all speculative and very technical. Whether there could be other signals from other objects but from the black box. We will know in due time. As far as survivors are concerned, thats always been our priority, and ive said that over and over again, but the leads that we have received, either from satellite images or from other sightings did not indicate or show survivors. But i have always said, especially to the families, miracles do happen, and if we are just still hoping against hope, we continue to hope and pray for survivors. Do you think that the ping yes, sir. Could you stand up please . Gove. Could you confirm cnns report quoting a senior malaysian government officer that mh370 at least skirted around the Indonesian Air space before it meets journey to the southern indian ocean . A second route designed to avoid the radar detection . And also, back to the question just now on the black box. If australia manages to recover the black box, youre saying we are not sure yet if malaysias going to take over the investigation or australian . I said that it depends on the international practices, and we will go back to the acao on that. In regards to the radar, it is untrue. Ive got the chief of Defense Force malaysia to contact its counterpart in indonesia, and they have confirmed that they had no sighting of the plane. Okay. Second row back. What is the status in the investigation on the two pilots as well as approximately the third . And have police had any leads regarding the background checks of the crew and passengers . No change from the last indication on that. Okay. Please. You, sir. The lady, yes. Your question, please. [ inaudible ] when will the families be taken to the site, if in case upon finding the black box, how soon will they be taken . Well go over to you. Were not so sure about the date line at the moment. What we are looking at is the wreckage. Once we find, then we will decide from that day onwards, well give a certain date to bring all these next of kins to perth to a minimum base, which we will also decide, also later. We will announce it as soon as we set up these date line sort of time for the next of kins to be sent to perth. Thank you. Yes. Could you stand up, please, and identify yourself . Thank you. Tv china. My question is more to the incoming handshake approximately six minutes after the first handshake. Is there any new information we can get from this new data . And for instance, maybe the more exact route of the aircraft . Thank you. The area where the ocean shield and the haisun is searching now looking for the detection or pinging of the black boxes are taking into account the last thats been taken into consideration. Thank you. Okay, we go to the foreign ones. Yes. On the corner there, please. Please. Hi. My name is king chi from sky news. In light of the latest developments, have any of the family members expressed a specific desire to go to perth . Thank you. This is what we have been doing at the moment, to identify the real next of kins. So, the thing is that at the moment, we have a number of next of kins. We have almost like 500, 600 people. We are making sure to identify one by one to get the power of attorney to next move, because we are very uncertain at the moment whether we still will get bodies in the wreckage and all sort of things. Depending on that, well decide later. Thank you. Yes, the next one, please. The one in the blue tshirt. Yes, thank you. Thank you. From the wall street journal. So, i have just one clarification. Sorry . One small clarification first, then a question. Twice this evening you mentioned acao, are you talking about icao . Icao, yes. Thank you so much for clarifying that. The other question is, if you notice the Australian Press conferences this morning by investigators, everybody seems to be convinced that the aircraft is lost and no survivors. For the next processes to start, you know, because all the families have certain banking issues and insurance issues, at what stage will malaysia come out and say, okay, we accept that the aircraft is lost and there could be no survivors . Im aware of all those issues that have been mentioned in our discussions with the families have indicated many requests, some conflicting. Some do not want to speak about claims, insurance or otherwise or Bank Accounts that have been frozen, but there are others who want to have more details about what happens in the event that we do have some signals from the black box. It is a very fine line that we are walking. And so far, we have done that walk through that very fine line. It really depends very much on how we move forward on deciding on the timeline and how the families cope with the situation. Right now, our main focus is on this new lead that we have. This is something very positive and this is something that is ongoing as we speak. I really do hope that we find something concrete out of this so that matters that you have asked for just now could be implemented. Nevertheless, parallel to our searchandrescue, we have formed committees. We have form ed material ministerial committees, innat inquiries, we have linked up with international agencies. Ntsb, bba of france and also the caac, the Civil Aviation administration of china and the aaid, the Accident Investigation Department in china have all come on board. So, of all these agencies and committees had been set up in the event that we do trigger off what needs to be done as asked by you. But the actual timeline, i personally would like to engage the families and see what would be the best time for us to do that. But i feel, to be fair to them, the finding debris, survivors, if at all, and the black box would be a very significant point in time as far as timeline goes. Yes. Good evening. Im megumi, Japan Business press. We have been hearing the word that you continue to the search as long as it takes. However, in terms of your case of the air france 447, they only took demands from the beginning due to the cost. Which one, sorry . The air france 447, the search first, they took place for one month and closed because of the cost. True. Then later on, they spent the next year, following year. Actually who exactly is bearing the cost for the International Massive search . Is it malaysia government or Malaysia Airlines . The financial status of malaysian government has been quite severe. What is your comment that actually 53 of gdp and then Malaysia Airlines, the defendic has been three consecutive years. Who exactly is bearing . And secondly, as ceo of Malaysia Airlines, we have passed one month already. How do you see this affecting your National Airlines and the reputation of the airlines . And do you intend to resign because of that sooner or later . Thank you very much. First and foremost, obviously, this incident has affected the airline, but the investigation is still ongoing. We have a lot of work to do, okay . The airline obviously needs to get itself together, and if you notice experience of other airline, you can take them up to about six months to recover from what you call a market repetition issue. And we intend to do that. We intend to do that quicker. As far as my own personal position, i have work to do here. If you speak to John Paul Trud yek, who was the head of the french investigation time, he will be first to say they didnt stop after two months. It took two years before they found a black box, and we are work ing very closely with him o see what we need to do to go that distance. Even this morning during the bilateral between the two Prime Ministers of singapore and malaysia, there were new information and offer of cooperation with regards to what singapore went through wi. So, as we go along, i think there will be so many more people who come forward to assist us, and im working very closely with minister lee of singapore to see what they actually did with that crash, and they had no hesitation and definitely didnt talk about dollars and cents when looking for the aircraft. Okay. All right. You, sir. Thank you for taking my question. Joe johns with cnn. Hi, joe. The location of the pulse detected by haisun 1 seems to be 560 kilometers away from the ocean shields find. How do you account for that . Chinese photographers also took images over the last few days or so. Any reason to believe that has to do with the plane . Doesnt matter, as long as we find it. And i think both locations, whether it is found by the chinese vessel or the signals that came from the Australian Ocean shield, the point is to make sure that every possible asset that is able to identify those signals, and those signals belong to mh370 becomes established. So, it doesnt matter whether we need to say that theyre so different because we have not even found the black box yet. Okay. One last question from the lady there, please. Thank you. Could you stand up and identify yourself . Christine negroni, abc news new york. Hi. I have two questions. The first is, when we last spoke, i asked you about that route that the airplane had taken and that the families had been shown some slides and that some documents had been presented showing that the plane headed in a westerly direction, then pivoted, did a little zigz zigzag, pivoted north and came back south. Can you confirm whether that was indeed the direction of the airplane . And my second question is, most accident investigations usually involve one or two investigative bodies. Youve mentioned now five. Is there a reason why malaysia thinks the input of so many investigative agencies would be beneficial . In america, we would say thats trying to design a horse by committee. What would be the benefit of that . Ill just quote Prime Minister abbott, when he said that this is the most difficult search in human history. It means it is unprecedented. Its never been done before. So, no matter how many agencies it takes, what do we benchmark it against . So, its very irresponsible to judge what we have right now, the more experts we have, the better in a situation where it is so unprecedented. And that quote came from the Prime Minister of australia, not from malaysia. And as far as the route that you mentioned, that question was actually answered two pieces ago. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. That concludes this session the Malaysian Defense minister on the detection of pings by an australian vessel off the coast of perth. He says he is cautiously hopeful that there will be positive developments in days, if not hours. And he calls the detection of these pings the most promising lead weve had yet. And he says how reliable are those signals . He was asked, he said this has been a roller coaster ride, no question, each detail, but this, this is something that they are the most pleased about trying to get in terms of solving this mystery. Lets bring in Senior International correspondent Nic Robertson. Hes in kuala lumpur for us this morning. This is, you know, this is an Investigation Team that has really been following loose ends for more than three weeks now. This seems to be the most, the most solid lead theyve had. Reporter and the fact that he says that hes hopeful even within hours gives an indication, perhaps hes getting more from the lead of the australian investigation and Angus Houston of what hes discovering. He had said in the press conference in australia, the air commodore there, that it was perhaps days before they would get clarification. And it seems that the transport minister here feels even more optimistic than that. So, perhaps hes had a more detailed briefing than that thats been made public so far. I think that was an interesting point. Also, theyre confirming again that the aircraft didnt fly over Indonesian Air space, but he didnt answer the question about what we have heard from other government officials there, that this was intentional on behalf of who was flying the aircraft. It was sort of a non denial denial there, nic. He did not deny that it skirted indonesia. He said indonesian radar did not pick up anything, which, of course, wasnt really the question there. Just to bring everyone up to speed on the developments that have been happening over the last couple hours here. An Australian Naval vessel towing an americanmade towed pinger locator has detected signals consistent with those that could be coming from the black boxes of flight 370. One detection was over two hours long, one detection was about 13 minutes. And Nic Robertson, again who was with us from kuala lumpur, this detection was about 370 miles from where a chinese vessel had detected pings over the weekend. And this Malaysian Defense minister was asked about that. Reporter he was, and he dismissed it in a very cursory way. He said it doesnt matter if that debris that was spotted not far from where the huisun on friday and saturday picked up those pings. He said that the detection on friday and saturday were so far from the australian detection of today and yesterday. For him, the most important thing, he said, focusing on just finding those black boxes, identifying them. And an interesting question he was asked as well about when do you draw a line under this . And he really made it clear that his reference was going to be the families, but he was going to want to have that physical, the evidence or the black boxes being properly identified, the ruling out of any possibility of survivors as well as the sort of physical evidence of the wreckage of the aircraft before he will draw a line under it. But again, really referencing the families as being, wanting to take his lead from them and when theyre ready as well. It does indicate how sensitive it is here, but also, again, there are things in the investigation that, perhaps, hes not as familiar with. He doesnt want to get into the technical details, he said.
