About this full day of searching . Reporter all of those questions still unanswered at this hour, christine, frustrating for everyone. Not the least the families, of course. Youre right, we usually start hearing from the authorities leading the search around about now. Anytime now, it could be it could be two or three hours. So its an enact timing, really. Depending on what theyve got to say. The big equivalent search so far today, 12 aircraft, as you say, in the air today, there are five ships in the search zone. Thats critical, because they need ships there. They need people actually looking across the surface of the sea. Theres the australian mobile vessel there. Three Chinese Naval vessels there, icebreaker. Four chien naes for a total there. This is critical. Theyve been going out all day. Theyve had eyes on that zone for hours now. If you look at the map of what theyre looking for, if you look at the flight path, the last known flight path of mh370, they are looking a few hundred mile to the east of that. It is a zone they targeted before. Theyve actually colorcoded the different days that theyre actually searching. And the colors are now overlaid on each other. So they keep on going back to this same zone. This is a zone where the chinese saw some sort of debris, two relatively large objects they describe them. And several white smaller white bits of debris, in the radius of a couple of miles. Thats not also not far from what the Australian Air force saw, two rather large objects. One being described as gray in color, one being orange in color. Because of the weather conditions theyve gone back there i should say, christine, that the weather conditions arent ideal today. But theyre obviously good enough to get every asset theyve got back down there. There is a window down here. Were being told that weather could close in at anytime. This is a very, very difficult part of the planet to predict the weather patterns because it is so far south. Storms can blow up very quick lip. Every hour virtually counts. Every hour is critical because theres only a certain amount of time that the data from these flight recorders will be broadcasting. Theyve got to narrow on where those are. Time is so critical here. Thats right. The u. S. Have sent two very sophisticated devices which are now in perth. One is a locator. Its dragged behind a boat, a ship, to look specifically for the beacons, the pinging coming from the flight recording boxes which are somewhere, we assume, on the bottom of the sea. They also have a submersed its a drone submarine which can map out the seabed. Its crucial to remember here, christine, as one oceanographer put it, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the seabed. It does give you an idea of what theyre up against. These assets are still sitting here in perth. The United States navy has made it clear we want to move them as close to the zone, but we dont want to actually take them out there until we get a positive i. D. On an object that is directly linked to 370. The problem is when they get that positive i. D. , they are still perhaps four or five days sailing away, if its in that zone that theyre focusing on in the moment. Theyre four or five days away from that zone by sailing, so it is all timecritical that theyve made that decision. Theyre not going to be send them until they have a better understanding of where the main part of the wreckage could be. Andrew stevens in perth for us this morning. Thanks. Let us know if you get any word from officials if they found anything from that first full day of searching since that bad weather. It makes it difficult, its a three or fourhour flight for the search planes just to get to that area. The spotters when the weather isnt ideal. You got white caps, you think you saw something, did you see something. Which is why the colors of what they thought she spotted is so important. When you can actually see colors and shapes, thats when they think theyre on to something. Finding any piece of that debris that may be connected to flight 370 is the only hope that investigators have for finding that plane. Take look at this exclusive video of this hightech, what is called an autonomous underwater vehicle, auv. Its on hold on standby. It can detect wreckage at depths of nearly 15,000 feet. The pentagon says it is there in case it can be used, they just have to wait for a much smaller search area for it to be defined to be effective. In addition to that, search teams have hydrophones at their disposal. These are microphones designed to be used under water. They were originally designed to ferret out enemy submarines. Now, theyll be used to locate the pings and hopefully the wreck avenue. Then the sonar comes in and creates a 3d map of whats on the ocean floor. Heres our Stephanie Elam off the coast of australia. Its really interesting technology. And it is a difficult task were talking about. Im joined by james coleman, a senior hydrographer. Lets start with the hydrophone. How does this work . Exactly. This is a hydrophone. There are a number of varieties of hydrophones but basically a hydrophone is an underwater microphone. This is the device theyre going to be using either towed along a boat in long tales in order to listen to the underwater pinger. How far can it hear, how wide . Only about five miles. So this is where you are trying to find the basic area of where any flight data recorder might be . Exactly. You need to find the wreck site. If we go from this, lets take a look at the sonar. The sonar is what youre going to do if you get closer 0 if that battery died on the recorder . Exactly. As it receives a signal coming back from the seafloor, its going to interpret that and build up a 3d map of whats on the bottom. So this device is used to map out whats on the seafloor. Youve got to be right on top of it for that to work . Yeah. Deploying this Cutting Edge Technology is crucial to the search but as painstaking and, of course, very time consuming. This morning, china is demanding the malaysian government turn over the satellite data all of that used to determine that 239 people on board Malaysian Airlines flight 370 is lost. That dat did being used to narrow the search in the indian ocean. What does it tell us about the possibility that foul play may have been involved. Jim clancy is live in kuala lumpur. Jim, you have been tracking this throughout. There are numerous investigations going on right now, including a critical search for any debris in that data recorder. Now, you are telling me theres a new information by the Malaysian Air force, is that right . Reporter thats correct, it was announced last night by the defense minister transport minister. And its being conducted by the royal Malaysian Air force. Were not being given any details on what that investigation will focus on. But clearly, they are concerned about the military radar and how it was implemented. How it was analyzed. How it might have helped with this search. Up can be sure that theyre under pressure from a lot of sources. If you recall, the plane disappeared on one saturday. It wasnt until a week later the next saturday, that the Prime Minister najib razak announced they were in this words, expanding the search area. Well, what they were really doing is moving the entire search area from the South China Sea where the plane wasnt to the indian ocean, where they suspected it probably was. Why did it take so long to analyze that data . Well, it was turned over to the u. S. Aviation administration answer the National Transportation safety board for analysis but why couldnt the malaysians have analyzed that themselves. Were they told earlier enough that this flight had gone missing. That it wasnt just another domestic flight coming back. That it was a missing airliner. It will focus on all of those things. I dont think were going to hear much on that. Unfortunately, were not going to hear much into the allimportant investigation into the people, the motives, who could have taken over the jetliner. Was it steered off course intentionally. Was this just a matter of catastrophic mechanical malfunction . That investigation continue heres as well, poppy. Jim, thank you so much. Its been nearly three weeks since flight 370 for family members its unimaginable grief and outrage. Many of them suspecting the malaysian government is withholding information. Few of them accepting the pronouncement that the jetliner and everyone on board is gone. Pauline chiou has been spending a lot of time with the families. She joins us from beijing. What is the latest this morning . We know they tried to storm the Malaysian Embassy. We know theyre demanding answers. What is the latest . Reporter well, theyre demanding more answers at this moment in a meeting right now with malaysian government officials. Military officials, as well as officials from Malaysia Airlines. Also Malaysia Airlines has sent a senior boeing 777 pilot to this briefing thats going on at the moment to answer technical questions. And theyre going over satellite data. The speed of the plane. Possible flight paths. Relatives are asking why did you narrow it down to this particular flight path. Its quite technologiciqucal an. And my producer inside have said its so technical that some of the relatives have fallen asleep. Theyre going into to the second hour of this briefing. The big picture is these relatives are not satisfied with the explanation that the malaysian government has given them. And they say how can you draw conclusion from just a power point presentation. We want hard evidence. One relative says hes really just not convinced yesterday. Tired of an irresponsible conclusion with no real evidence. Giving us that the flight went down in the south indian ocean. And no evidence, how can they give such a conclusion . Reporter thats a big question. How can you come to this conclusion. Thats what the relatives are trying to get at this moment. One woman stood up and said to the malaysian officials just within this past hour, your country killed our relatives. That is where the diplomatic issues begin for china and malaysia. Pauline chiou, thank you. Of course, well continue to follow the latest on the long mystery of flight 370. Breaking news this morning. The search intensifies for missing malaysia Airlines Flight 370. New clues this morning helping to narrow the search. Right now, investigators scouring the southern indian ocean by air and by sea for any sign of this vanished jetliner. We have live team coverage. Welcome back to early start. Im christine roams. Im poppy harlow in for john berman. Its 5 30 a. M. In the east coast. We begin with the search, more than a dozen and planes in the search from six countries, desperately looking for the search for that missing air liner. So far, nothing, no debris has been found. Meanwhile, family members in china coping with agonizing grief and mounting anger. Many of them trying to rush the Malaysian Embassy in beijing. They want answers. Our jim clancy is tracking the investigation live from kuala lumpur. Jim, those family members, so many of them hanging on to hope. They want proof. They want more than just a statement from malaysian authorities saying that 239 people on that plane are gone. They want to see evidence. Reporter thats absolutely right. And you know, the Prime Minister of malaysia released that statement saying that they feared, of course, that all 239 lives had been lost. The plane indeed had been lost. In one of the remote places on earth. And when you stop and think about it, these chinese families, news that their loved ones were flying from here in kuala lumpur up to beijing, suddenly, theyre being told they disappeared far, far south in the southern reaches of one of the most remote places on earth in the indian ocean. And its hard for them to accept that. There could be a mathematical calculation and no evidence. Well, the Prime Minister explained that he released the information, he didnt want to look like he with withholding anything from anyone. Now, theyre, of course, demand something of the details in all of that. Chinese officials as well putting on pressure saying they want to look at the data, they want to do some analysis of their own. Thats understandable. But, you know, everyone from the families to officials here in malaysia, and, remember, the malaysians, thats the number two list on the passengers manifest for the number of people on board that flight. So people here in kuala lumpur very much on edge. Every day about this time, when we hear from the australians what they have reached, what they have found in their search. There was a dozen aircraft up there today that have been working on all of that. Light is going to begin to fade. But that search continues. And everyone is hoping to hear some positive news because they know, only when you find first find the debris can you locate the plane, can you locate the flight data recorders. Can you unravel the mystery of flight 370, back to you. And jim, there are a series of investigations going on right now. Of course, critical is finding any debris also the malaysian government investigation, the Malaysian Air force new investigation, and the chinese have launched their own investigation. Do we have any information on what that chinese investigation entails what they may have found thus far. Obviously, theyre doing this because people are crying out, family members in beijing, for answers, and do not feel like theyre getting them from malaysian authorities . Reporter china does not want to be seen as standing by and letting leaving all of this to someone else. They are bound and determined we will have an active role to play in this. When they say theyre investigating, im only going to assume everything. Theyre going to look at that inmarsat data. Theyre going to look at the radar data. Theyre going to look at all of it, poppy christine. Just quickly, jim, they are demanding all of the satellite information from malaysian authorities. Are they getting it it . Reporter i dont know the answer to that question. I dont see the malaysians as holding back on that information. It was gimp to them by british accident investigators, southwest inmarsat. How they arrived at their calculations is a very detailed an si analysis. Now, we do know last night, they met with some of the families and tried to share with them some of the technical analysis. But, you know, i cant tell you exactly what the numbers will mean. I think that the raw data will likely be given to beijing so they can have a hand in that as well. What does this mean to the investigation, that is not at all clear. Having multiple people look at the data cant be bad. It can only be good. More eyes look at it, analyze it, but at the same time, well have to wait and see, back to you. And the key as is that coordination with so many eyes looking at it. So analyzing data but trying to find debris to analyze as well to put pieces together. Andrew stevens on the search process, hes in perth, australia, for us. Its morning here, evening there. Youve had search crews out all day. What is the latest . Have they found anything . Reporter not that were aware of, but, remember when it comes to releasing information it is pretty tricky controlled. It does come out through the search coordinators. Not all the planes are back at the moment. Theres probably another two hours or so of daylight left. So 12 aircraft going up today which is the biggest fleet of aircraft so far in this search. And they really have to maximize their efforts when they can because the weather is not playing its part. Today, it was okay. It wasnt great by many means, and there was still quite a lot of cloud in the area but good enough to get all their air assets up and over that search zone. Were hearing that the weather is likely deteriorating in the next 24 hours to the degree where they have to cancel the flight, we dont know yet. But were still waiting to get information back. There was a Royal Air Force due to arrive back here in about an hour from now. That we get invited to go across to the tarmac, and sometimes, the pilot will come out of the plane and come and say a quick statement which is usually we havent found anything and tell us about the conditions. Arrival of that plane has been pushed back an hour. We dont know why. So were waiting to find out whats going on there. The other side of this search, of course, is actually on the surface. The sea search. And today, a significant boost in the number of people actually in ships, in that area. There are now five ships in the area. There is the australian mobile vessel which is back on station after it had to leave yesterday because of the weather. There is a chinese icebreaker there. And there are three other Chinese Naval we feels. They are now right there, chris crossing that area. That search area is still big. Theyre on target. Theyre looking and its so important to have that visual contact to actually locate a piece of debris, get to it, get it back on board and identify it. All right. From perth, andrew stevens, thank you. Finding any piece of debris connected to the flight is critical to locating the plane and its flight data recorder. Look at this exclusive video of the hightech autonomous underwater vehicle. This thing is known as auv. It has sophisticated sonar that can detect wreckage. The pentagon says its there just in case theres a need. In addition to the sonar, search teams have something called a hydrophone at their disposal. This is a microphone designed to be under water. They were originally designed to ferret out enemy submarines. Now it will be used to locate the critical pings and hopefully the wreckage. Right now, i want to take you live to kuala lumpur, the daily press by malaysian officials. Lets listen in. Where a Multinational Team led by australia is combing the area, trying to find debris from the flight. Our determination to find flight 370 remains steadfast. As we have said all along, we will never give up trying to find the plane. In order to bring closure for the families and to establish exactly what happened to mh370. Australia, china and france have already released satellite images showing objects that may be related to mh370. Yesterday, on the 25th of march, the malaysian Remote Sensing agency, mrsa, received new satellite images from defense and space based in france. And these images were taken on the 23rd of march. Mic analyzed the images and in one area of the ocean measuring some 400 square kilometers were able to identify 122 potential objects. Some objects were a meter in length. Others were as much as 23 meters in length. Some objects appear to be bright, possibly indicating solid material. The objects were located approximately 2,557 kilometers from perth. We will issue a handout showing their location after this press conference. Mrsas findings were immediately forwarded to the Emergency Rescue center in perth yesterday. It must be emphasized that we cannot tell wlur the potential objects are from mh370. Nevertheless, this is another new lead that will help direct the search operation. We have now have four operate satellite leads from australia, from china and france showing possible debris. Its now imperative that we link the debris to mh370. This will allow us to locate the search more for the plane. Authorities are leading the search in the southern indian ocean based out of perth. Malaysia continues to play a coordinating role. All countries involved are displaying unprecedented levels of cooperation. That has not changed. Australia has divided the search efforts into two sectors. The east and the west. Today, the weather has improved, and 12 planes will travel to the search area, six in the e sector, and six in the west. In the east sector, searching will be conducted by one australian p3 orion and 3 aircraft. One orion. In the western sections, searches will be conducted by u. S. P8 pos sidian. Werent japanese and two civilian aircraft. Two ships will also join the search operations. Yesterday, hmas was redeploy to get search area. Today, the ship has returned and will support the operations in the west sector. Meanwhile, the chinese ship xu long has been deployed to the east sector. And going from perth to join the search operation. As i mentioned yesterday, the search operation its in northern corridor and in the northern part of the southern corridor have been called off. The ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent diplomatic notes to all represented countries to inform them of this change. Before i continue, i would like to convey our appreciation to the Australian Authorities and in particular to Prime Minister tony abbott for making such an extraordinary contribution to this search operation. Chinese special enjoy. Today, the Prime Minister met with the excellency, the chinese Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs and i also met with his excellency his afternoon. During our conversation, his excellency conveyed chinas commitment to continue and intensify the search operation in any way possible. And to deploy any assets that may be required. Malaysia has provided his excellency and his delegation with a full update on the latest information from inmarsat. His excellency also received a comprehensive briefing from the International Technical team. As i mentioned yesterday, based on the new information provided by inmarsat, we have established an International Working group. The agencies involved in this working group include inmarsat. Aaib. The chinese aaid. Ntsb. Faa, boeing and rolls royce, southwest the relevant malaysian authorities. The role of the working group is to help try and refine inmarsat data. And if possible, more accurately determine the final position of mh370. I should like to note that the ceo of Malaysian Airlines has joined me on the stage today. He will be able to answer any questions you have. And as in communication and communicating with the families and conducting all press conferences, and will hold another press Conference Tomorrow regardinging that. New satellite images continue to provide clues in the search for mh370, ladies and gentlemen. And with improved weather conditions, aircraft are now able to investigate objects of interest. I would like to thank you, once again, our international partners, and once again, for their continued support in assistance. The search for mh370 and investigation into what happened on board the flight is now a Truly International effort. Thank you. Okay. Ladies and gentlemen. We will open to the local media first and then to international media. So i will start. In the back, please. [ speaking in Foreign Language ] [ speaking in Foreign Language ] [ speaking in Foreign Language ] all right. Were going to keep an eye on this presser and come back to it in a moment. But lets recap. This is a possible significant development. The malaysian transportation minister just saying in this Daily Press Conference there is, quote, another new lead that satellite images taken on march 23rd from french satellites have spotted 122 potential objects possibly solid. They say some appear bright, indicating bright, potentially saad material. These are about 2500 kilometers from perth. So obviously, theyre really focused on this particular area. Some of these piece are 23 me r meters in length. Quite large. Youre looking for large pieces that could be fuselage, they could be wing. Typically, easier to spot than smaller pieces. By my count, you got four different satellite imagery showing different debris. Australia, china, france. Theyre calling this is a new lead. Whats critical obviously coming from the malaysian transportation minister saying, quote, its imperative that we link this debris in mh370. However, 122 potential objects some as large as 23 meters. Lets go back and listen. Its now in english. Q and a with the reporters there. Lets listen to what theyre saying. Translator any more access happens again. And this is what we want to do generally. And that is currently what we are doing right now to indeed the flight and to find the black box so we can retrieve information, information to answer our questions. Translator i have a question for you and one question for malaysia air. Yesterday some of the chinese relatives have been demonstrating in front of our embassy in beijing. What safety precautions are being taken over there . And what control Safety Control that is currently being done over there . And for the ceo, from safety aspects at the embassy, i was informed that it is currently under control. And the progress in regards to those who were involved have been informed to the delegates in china. And its currently being brought on board. And also has been getting involved in the Prime Minister. Good evening. This morning, the air flight this morning, about 7,000 feet, the captain of the flight had found that the fire detection system triggered. Once the fire detection system has been triggered not seeing any delay, the captain diverted the plane back. In seven to ten minutes, the captain succeeded diverting the plane without any accidents to the crews or passengers. And all the passengers were safely landed this morning. Thank you. I would like to ask you, how is the government preparing to assist Malaysia Airlines . And what are the how is the government preparing to assist Malaysian Airlines, to cover its financial losses . Were looking at the search and rescue, and we will not entertain that. Any explanation for loss . I will not entertain that. Okay. The next question. Yes. Would you stand up and identify yourself, please, thank you. Translator id like to ask, mh370 is a cosharing flight with Southern China what is what is china currently doing in regards to this incident .
