The harsh reality there is where we begin this morning with 33 Million People in southern california, the San Joaquin Valley and the San Francisco bay area now under new stayathome orders as icu capacity in hospitals there near the breaking point. 33 Million People. Thats more people than live in new york and pennsylvania combined. They face the closure of bars, hair salons, museums, movie theaters, playgrounds and more yeah, the number of americans hospitalized remains above 100,000, and thats before the expected surge following thanksgiving when millions of americans were traveling and gathered with family members and keep in mind, well likely see n more of that same kind of surge come hanukkah and christmas. The white house vaccine chief praised a plan by president elect biden to ask americans to wear masks in his first hundred days in office. Saying that masks are key as the country awaits the vaccine. Dr. Moncef slaoui, the head of operation warp speed expecting emergency authorization for pfizers vaccine is imminent, and hopes that it will be available, perhaps, later this week. The vaccine is safe. Its safety profile is comparable to many other vaccines that have been in use for years. Still, important questions are unanswered, like how long immunity lasts after a vaccination, and can you still infect someone else even if youre protected. A pugh study finds 60 of americans would take a vaccine if it were available today, but thats still short of the 70 to 75 that dr. Anthony fauci says is needed to get the country on the road to normalcy. Yeah, and relief remains some time off for most americans, including californians. The state reported more than 30,000 new cases on sunday alone. Cnns Paul Vercammen has more from los angeles. Reporter laura, boris, you alluded to it, the number just horrific and heartbreaking and record shattering in california. All of these cases and hospitalizations, the new orders to go into effect. One of those orders shuts down Outdoor Dining at restaurants, but because of the patch work or crazy quilt of laws in california, restaurants like this one, the Pineapple Hill saloon and grill in sherman oaks already shut down. They have not given us money, and they have shut us down. We cannot survive. My staff cannot survive. Look at this. Tell me that this is dangerous. But right next to me, as a slap in my face, thats safe. This is safe . Reporter the owner here just devastated. She went viral with a rant about this, and among other things, she told me, its just crushing to have to tell employees they have no work right before the holidays. Its unbearable. I mean, you try to put on a good face, you try to say, dont worry, were going to reopen. Im going to make it happen, but to look at my staff, give them their last paycheck right before christmas, and some of them are newer staff that have been shut down over and over and their unemployment is running out, and they have kids and children, tgs the most excruciating feeling. Theres no options. Its not like were going to stay on unemployment. Mine is almost out, and i have no idea what im going to do. Reporter and another employee here telling me christmas is on its way, and she just doesnt know what to tell her 9yearold son in terms of what sort of christmas its going to be. Welcome back, georgia residents have until the end of the day to register to vote for next months decisive senate runoffs. With a rally in the state over the weekend, his baseless grievances about Election Fraud were the key backdrop between two of the Senate Candidates that previewed out how the next month may play. Cnns ryan nobles has more. Reporter boris and laura, there was a lot of anticipation for this debate on sunday night in part because it was the first time that Kelly Loeffler and Raphael Warnock appeared in a forum when it was just the two of them head to head as they emerged in this runoff election. And it played out much of the way we expected it to. Raphael warnock attacking loeffler for the convenient stock trades she made shortly after becoming a United States senator at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, and loeffler hammering warnock calling him a radical liberal over and over again. Perhaps the most revealing thing from this debate was Kelly Loefflers difficult position. That position is attempting to somewhat embrace President Trumps attempts to overturn the results of the election while at the same time not leaning completely into the situation. Take a look at how she handled this particular issue on sunday. Senator, did you believe the election was rigged . Look, greg, its very clear that there were issues in this election. There are 250 investigations open, including an investigation into one of my opponents organizations. You know, for voter fraud. And we have to make sure that georgians trust this process because of whats at stake in this election. You know, the promise that Chuck Schumer made was to fundamentally change america, and im making sure that we dont go down the road of socialism and loeffler was asked multiple times whether or not she believes President Trump won or lost the election, and she flat out just did not answer the question. Warnock had moments where he deflected questions as well. He would not say whether or not he supported adding justices to the supreme court. This was broadcast across the country, on cnn, because so much was at stake. Republicans need to win at least one of the two runoffs in order to maintain control of the senate majority. Boris and laura. Ryan, thank you for that. Democratic senator mark warner of virginia says a proposal for a new coronavirus stimulus package could come within hours. President elect joe biden is rolling out the team charged with bringing the pandemic under control. The president elect is expected to nominate dr. Vivek murthy as u. S. Surgeon general. All right, arlette, thank you so much for that. There are 44 days until joe bidens inauguration as president. Its time for three questions this three minutes. Lets bring in Washington Post white house reporter, toluse olorunnipa, a cnn political analyst. Good to see you this morning. Thank you so much for getting up with us. What do you make of the president elect having president elect having ba certificate ro issues like the Affordable Care act, drug price, what do you make of this pick . Halve j Javier Bacerra, fills a lot of the requirements, hes in large state, has experience working in a large bureaucracy, the diversity, and working class roots. Not only is he a latino, but hes something somebody who pulled himself up by a working class background and was able to get to the highest ranks of the political world, and i think thats something that joe biden is looking for. Hes talked about it when he talks about his economic picks and this is going to be a choice that has defended the Affordable Care act, and thats very important to joe biden as well. Javier bacerra has sued to defend the Affordable Care act, and joe biden is trying to expand and defend the aca, so i think he fits a number of those key requirements, even though he does not have that Traditional Health care background. He was albany ble to fulfill th things joe biden was looking for. The Senate Debate last night, there was an enormous elephant in the room, the president s disinformation campaign, the state identity lieutena states Lieutenant Governor said the president could be hurting chances in the january 5th runoff. How do you think senator loeffler was trying to divert through this question of whether the president actually won the peach state or not . It seems that republicans have sort of talked themselves into a corner here. Yes, Senate Loeffler was really dodging and weaving throughout the course of the night, not wanting to answer the question about whether or not President Trump lost the election, whether the election was rigged, whether or not she believes that the Voting System in georgia, which is run by a republican secretary of state or republican governor who have both been attacked by the president , whether or not she had faith in those republicans, so she did not answer those questions. She was trying to do two things at once, placate the president and his supporters by grieving some credence to their baseless fraud claims, and also telling voters that they need to have faith in the system in order to vote on january 5th. So it was very awkward to watch her try to do that over the course of an hour but thats where republicans find themselves at this moment, trying to figure out how to placate the president while also telling people that they should have faith in the Voting System in georgia. I guess its good that she showed up, though, considering david perdue refuses to even debate ossoff for reasons i cant understand. It seems whats happening in georgia speaks to this broader issue, the relationship between president and this republican party. We have seen this over four years, the party is desperately loyal to him. Now hes furious with the governor georgia refuse to go help him overturn his loss, hes furious with fox news for calling that race early for biden in arizona, so much so he preferred watching the nfl players kneel over wamtching fo. Clearly years of loyalty dont matter when you dont do what he wants. Why are republicans going to these endless limits to satisfy the president who always inevitably turns on them when he has to . Even though President Trump lost by a historically large margin in this popular vote margin, more than 7 million votes, he continues to have a stronghold on the party, and there have been other republicans who have tried to cross the president , and they have seen their political careers end as a result. Hes vin tick tdictive. He attacks members of his party on social media, and once that happens, its hard to run for reelection. Their political careers are tied to this president , and hes saying hes going to run again, and theyre going to need his endorsement or support if they want to run again in their own races. Theres not a lot of political courage right now in the republican party. They are realizing that they dont want to lose their seats so for that reason they have to give into these baseless claims from the president and essentially make it seem like what hes saying makes sense even though they know that a lot of the things hes saying are baseless and false and without any merit. They cant say so publicly because he will immediately shoot them down and potentially end their political careers. Thats why theyre sticking with him, even though they know what hes saying doesnt have very much merit at all. Anyone with 2024 aspirations is in a difficult place, mike pence, nikki haley, tom cotton. Dammed if you do, dammed if you dont say anything about the president right now. Tolu, thanks so much for getting up with us. Appreciate it. Good to see you. Another relationship with the president on the rocks, attorney general bill barr is considering leaving his post before the president leaves office. Barr has been a staunch defender of this president , but a source now tells cnn barr is not happy with trump and is quote not someone who takes bullying and turns the other cheek. Welcome back, iranian media reports claims the Top Nuclear Scientist was assassinated with the help of Remote Control guns guided by a satellite device. The question remains how iran will retaliate and the transition in washington could dictate the time line. Cnns security editor, Nick Paton Walsh got rare access to the site where the scientist was killed, and nick, what more are you learning about this. Reporter iranian officials increasingly elaborate in the death the Remote Controlled machine gun was fueled by Artificial Intelligence and facial recognition. A little distance from the scene we saw, it has been cleaned up. Still damage on the road. A large memorial poster for the doctor and clearly to some degree, a pretty useful spot for a low tech ambush. If you look at the orchards nearby and the scene that we saw. A witness, in fact, saying they heard a loud explosion, and then eight to ten minutes worth of an exchange of gunfire. A lot of versions still there. What does it mean for the diplomacy around Irans Nuclear program whachlt we ha program. What we have just heard from france, germany and the uk, they are deeply concerned of what they say is irans attempt to put enrichment centrifuges, one of a number of moves iran has put forward since the assassination. Another being its parliament, saying they want to put a strict timetable down which essentially ends at the beginning of joe bidens president elect administration in mid january at which point they would hope iran would be enriching further, and that puts a great timetable of pressure on the Biden Administration and those moderates here to get negotiations going and see some kind of fruit to alleviate sanctions and fundamentally see some sort of progress. There are hard liners who simply say there must be retaliation, and the only thing they will negotiate is getting back into the original 2015 deal. Back to you. A lot more to come on this. Thats for sure, nick, thank you. Getting a Covid Vaccine from the manufacturer into the arms of millions of americans is a daunting challenge. And one critical component is keeping the vaccines cold. Cnns pete muntean takes a look at how thats done from inside a cold Storage Facility at Philadelphia International airport. Reporter this is American Airlines cargo cold Storage Facility in philadelphia. Pharmaceuticals only, and essentially what is one big refrigerator. 25,000 square feet. You can see the fans back there blowing cold air into here. You know, it is about 50 degrees in here right now, according to this thermometer, although i have to say it feels a lot colder, the idea is to keep the specialized containers for vaccines that need to be super cold extra preserved. The moderna vaccine, negative 4 degrees fahrenheit, the Pfizer Vaccine needs to be negative 100 degrees fahrenheit. They would probably sit on the shelves here but the idea is to not keep them here very long. This is only a pit stop, albeit a critical one that airlines say in the request of getting the vaccine from the manufacturer to you to be administered. I just want to show you one more way that airlines are helping keep the vaccine cold while it is in transit. This is a portable Battery Powered refrigerated shipping container.
