The campaign trail today with serious questions still remaining about his health. With the time line of his infection still murky, trump told his supporters sunday hes tested quote totally negative for the virus, but yet neither he nor his doctor have provided evidence to back that up. Instead hes misrepresenting his chances of reinfection and underplaying the risk of spreading covid to anyone else. Listen to this. Its like im immune, i can go way out of a basement to which i would have done anyway, and which i did, because you have to run a country. You have to get out of the basement, and it looks like im immune for, i dont know, maybe a long time. Maybe a short time. It could be a lifetime. Nobody really knows, but im immune, so the president is in very good shape. Today the president stages his first rally since being diagnosed in the coronavirus hot spot state of florida. We get more now from White House Correspondent jeremy diamond. Good morning, laura and boris, President Trump is heading back to the campaign trail hitting a trio of battleground states, beginning today in florida. Tomorrow the president is going to go to the battleground state of pennsylvania before heading to iowa on wednesday. Now, President Trump heading back on to the campaign trail after the president s physician says that he has recovered from the coronavirus. Also saying that the president is no longer infectious. The president himself claimed that he had gotten a negative test for coronavirus but the president s physician dr. Sean conley didnt exactly say that. Instead he said simply that the president s latest molecular test for coronavirus showed that he is no longer infectious, that he cant infect other people. He did not say the president had tested negative for the virus. Nonetheless, the president and campaign are seizing on the later from dr. Sean conley to say that the second debate cancelled by the commission on president ial debate after President Trump withdrew from that second debate, the president s campaign are calling for that to be reinstated, saying that the president should be able to participate after hes been cleared by his doctor to resume public activity. Another controversy is hitting the president and his team on sunday. Dr. Anthony fauci putting out a statement to cnn after the Trump Campaign aired this misleading ad. President trump tackled the virus head on as leaders should. I cant imagine that anybody could be doing more. Now, dr. Fauci saying in a statement to cnn, in my nearly five decades of Public Service i have never publicly endorsed any political candidate. The comments attributed to me without my permission in the gop campaign ad were taken out of context from a broad statement i made moenths ago about the efforts of Public Health officials. The interview taken in the early months of the pandemic that dr. Fauci was referring to the members of the Coronavirus Task force and other Public Health officials. Nonetheless, the president and his Campaign Standing by the ad. The president noting that these are dr. Faucis own words. What is notable here is that the president and his Reelection Campaign seem to realize that the president is getting bad marks on his handling of the coronavirus. Nearly six in ten americans have said in recent polls that they disapprove of the president s handling of the virus, and whats also clear is the campaign is using dr. Faucis image and words here because fauci is far more frtrusted by e public on the issue of the coronavirus than the president is himself. Laura, boris. Jeremy die mondamond, thank r that. In florida, where the president is set to have a rally, 5,000 more cases reported over the weekend, and 900 people who attended a crowded rally have since tested positive for the virus. More than 30 states across the country are seeing cases spike. Cnns Evan Mcmorris santoro has more. Reporter laura and boris, fears of a coronavirus peak in the United States are growing in some corners as new cases are on the rise in 30 states. This country has now reported 50,000 new cases for four consecutive days. The first time thats happened since august. The former cdc director tom frieden told cnn over the weekend that a second wave is not inevitable but added the new cases mean a lot of tragedy is coming in the next few weeks. The only thing thats really inevitable is whats going to happen in the next couple of weeks, and from the infections that have already occurred, we will see Something Like 20,000 deaths by the end of the month. Additional deaths. Anytime we ignore, minimize or underestimate this virus, we do so at our peril, and the peril of people whose lives depend on us. We still have within ourselves, our communities, our society, the ability to turn this around. When you look around the world, the parts of the world and parts of the u. S. That have been guided by Public Health have done better. Reporter his words about the urgent need to follow infection mitigation guidelines ring especially true in new york city. This was once the worst place in america for the pandemic. But in recently months, its seeing those numbers come way way down, and the picture has been pretty good, until recent weeks, that is. Numbers are now on the rise in several new york city neighborhoods. The infection rate in those areas is now six times the overall state number. That number is concerning. Boris and laura. Evan, thank you for that report. The effort to fast track President Trumps Supreme Court nominee, judge Amy Coney Barrett officially begins in earnest later today as her Senate Confirmation hearing gets underway. If barrett is confirmed to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg, she would cement the courts conservative majority for generations to come. Cnns lauren fox has more on what we can expect today on capitol hill. Laura and boris, this is the opening day of Amy Coney Barretts nomination hearing on capitol hill, and its really the first time that democrats are going to have to be able to grill the nominee. Now, the first day of hearings is really all about lawmakers setting the table, making those opening statements. We expect that senator lindsay graham, the chairman will set off the hearing with his own statement, followed by dianne feinstein, the top democrat on the committee. And every member will have ten minutes to make an opening statement. After that, Amy Coney Barrett will be introduced, sworn in, and then we expect that she will make a statement, which cnn has obtained. Shell say in part, quote, there is a tendency in our profession to treat the practice of law as allconsuming, while losing sight of everything else, but that makes for a shallow and unfulfilling life. I worked hard as a lawyer and a professor. I owed that to my clients, my students, and myself, but i never let the law define my identity or crowd out the rest of my life. Now, overshadowing these hearings of course have been questions about who will actually show up in person. Thats because two members of this committee, two members of the judiciary committee, thom tillis and mike lee of utah tested positive for coronavirus. Senator lee is expected to announce today whether or not he plans to attend this hearing in person. Today and the rest of the week. We also expect that thom tillis will be signing in virtually, however, he said last week he planned to attend the hearing in person on thursday. That is a critical day because thats the day that senator Lindsey Graham needs a quorum, meaning he cant have both lee and tillis absent for a critical vote. If those members are missing, it puts into jeopardy whether or not republicans will be able to push this nomination forward before election day. Laura and boris. Laura, thank you for that. The confirmation hearings begin at 9 00 a. M. Speaking of the Supreme Court, joe biden sticking by his refusal to say whether he would seek to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court so he could appoint a few of his own, also known as Court Packing. Bidens unstated stance drawing outrage from republicans. His refusing to answer about whether hes going to pack the Supreme Court, upending 150 years of our judicial standards and hes saying ill tell you after the election, this is egregious that this candidate is getting away with this. Political reporter, Arlette Saenz has more from washington. Reporter boris and laura, joe biden and his campaign continue to deflect on the question of whether the former Vice President supports adding more justices to the Supreme Court. This comes as republicans and President Trump are trying to make this into a Campaign Issue heading into november. On sunday, Deputy Campaign manager Kate Bedingfield appeared on cnn and called this line of attack a distraction from the Trump Campaign. Take a listen. This is a distraction that they want to throw out, a hypothetical that they want to throw out to distract from the fact that they are trying to ram through a nominee who, as i said, is going to change the makeup of the court against the will of the american people. They dont want to talk about that. They are trying to create a distraction and, you know, send folks down a rabbit hole talking about this. During the democratic primary, joe biden opposed packing the Supreme Court. And there has not been any public indication just yet that his mind has changed on that position. But biden has insisted he will not answer this question until after the e electricilection, ca distraction from the issue at hand. Later today, joe biden was heading to the battleground state of ohio, where recent polls have shown a tight race between President Trump and joe biden. This comes four years after President Trump won ohio by about 8 points. And biden is seeking to make that state competitive as he gets closer to the november election. Laura and boris. Arlett, thank you so much. Stimulus negotiations in washington at a standstill. Democrats and republicans agree on one thing. More is needed to help struggling americans, but many at this point think a deal wont happen until after the november election. House speaker nancy pelosi, dismissed the proposal. But larry kudlow believes theres hope for a package with a price tag closer to what pelosi has proposed. Secretary mnuchin is up to 1. 8 trillion. The bid and offer is narrowing somewhat between the two sides. President trump actually has always said, i mean, ive heard him say it in the oval, as far as the key elements, the checks, the Small Business assistance, we have to help airlines out, he would go further. He has already said that. Senate republicans are pushing back on spending money. Multiple sources feel the general feeling that talks should continue, its clear the white house plan has no chance of passing the senate. In a letter to colleagues, pelosi called the offer grossly inadequate, its hard to understand who is shaping their approach which to date has been miserable and a deadly failure. Kudlow said negotiations would continue this week. A deadly shooting near dueling protests in denver were going to break down what happened next. Is now a good time for a flareup . Enough, crohns. The former Vice President heads to the battleground state of ohio where hes going to stop in toledo and cincinnati. With 22 days to the e elector, itelection its time for three questions in three minutes. Wo three questions in three minutes. The president is trailing in the polls badly, by the way, so hes eager to get back to holding the packed rallies. Can he make up for lost ground with undecideds with so little time, and hes sick himself. Sort answer, no, lets clarify, only poll that counts is election day. The president s supporters are very intense, and hes back out, after being sidelined by covid. Is this going to, you know, can he make up for lost ground . Its really a question of the last 3 1 2 years. Hes never done a good job of reaching out beyond the base, which is undecided and while this may not be good for his supporters enthusiasm, there are questions about whether it will be good for his health. Dont buy the superman nonsense, hes 74 and not in the greatest shape. Its now or never. Watch out and try not to get covid in the process, people. Its been rough watching the president stumble and cough and have to clear his throat over and over. You can hear the symptoms of covid, often when he speaks publicly. We have to talk about Amy Coney Barrett, confirmation hearings start this morning for the president s pick to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. Joe biden has refused to say whether he would pack the Supreme Court should he win on election day. Of course back in 1983, he made a reference to Court Packing saying that it was bone headed. This time around hes not saying anything until after election day. Is that the right strategy, john . First of all, the nomination of the Supreme Court justice and the battle were going to see in the days ahead is infinitely more consequential in the near term than a question of whether a Biden Harris Administration will pack the court. Obviously the answer hes giving is politically and emotionally unsatisfying. Dont think its been the best answer after the campaign. Well tell you after the campaign. Heres whats really going on. Joe biden is an institutionalist, which Mitch Mcconnell says he is, but doesnt give much evidence of. He would not like to pack the court. Democrats need to keep that in play as an option, given the pushing through, the withholding of Merrick Garland and trump getting three Supreme Court justices. Its very popular with the base as an idea to fight fire with fire. The problem with fighting fire with fire is the house burns down. Joe biden is trying to keep his powder dry. The question is have the rules changed . Has the game changed. Can that type of world view make sense in this type of environment. The other angle we want to ask you about, senator Kamala Harris involved in the hearing as a member of the judiciary committee, she grilled kavanaugh hard, how is this going to go over with voters . This is going to be high drama under the dome. Kamala harris has a different responsibility right now. Shes not going to, you know, shirk her duty. Shes a prosecutorial person by instinct, but Vice President s have an obligation to do no harm. You saw in the debate, folks around her saying shes going to try to set an example that shes president ial, so i think youre going to get a little less raw meat and heat but still tough appropriate questions because thats what shes good at and thats what Supreme Court hearings are for. This is for life people. I think shes going to bring it. I think shes going to be just as tough if not harder. Interesting. We will see. We will see laura jarrett. Take care, guys. Its part of an effort to slow what officials are calling the high and rising numbers of covid infkss the inf inf infkss the inf inf infections there. Cnns Nic Robertson joins us live from london. As this is getting announced, it could be facing legal challenges, right . Reporter yeah, i mean, what the Prime Minister is trying to do here is to simplify whats become sort of a scatter shot series of regional and local lock downs across the country. Just two weeks ago, the Prime Minister was asked, you know, how does the lock down affect or what are the rules of long down in one area of the country, and he couldnt give the right answer, so this three tier system which will be paid ymedi high and very high applied regionally is supposed to address that. We dont know yet what it takes to qualify for each of those different regions and what that means. We know that the city of liverpool is going to be in the highest level and we know that they are expected to close their pubs, their casinos and their gyms. Its an open question at the moment whether they have to close their restaurant, even at the late minute. There is heavy push back, principally because the highest rates of infection are in the north of the country. The local authorities dont feel the government has been giving them enough information, that the government hasnt been listening to them enough, that the track and trace that the government has put in place isnt working. So all of these local authorities are pushing back because they want to have a greater say. They want the government to listen to them. So right now, the Prime Minister has a big job ahead of him, boris. And officials are trying to avoid a resurgence of the numbers we saw in the u. K. Back in march. A difficult situation. These socalled challenge trials are not without risk but they could accelerate the development of a vaccine. Cnns phil black met some of the volunteers putting themselves directly in the path of a deadly virus. Reporter like so many, Stephanie Hidalgo has quietly endured the channllenge, the inconvenience of living through a pandemic but she wanted to do more. This was a way for me to take back control of the situation, to feel like i was, you know, more or in a less hopeless place, in a less hopeless world and be like, okay, i can do this to make it better. I chose not to be in fear. Reporter so she volunteered to be deliberately infected with the coronavirus. I was shaking but then i just, without knowing, i just typed my name in, and i was like lets go for it. Reporter shaking . Yeah, because it can be scary, right, youre going to be potentially exposed to the virus. Alex is also very keen to be infected. Ive just got the email. Reporter he helps with running the Recruitment Campaign stephanie signed up to. One day sooner finds volunteers, so far, tens of thousands around the world and has been lobbying the u. K. Government to make use of them through potentially risky research. I wake up thinking about challenge trials and go to bed thinking about challenge trials. Reporter challenge trials involve giving young, Healthy People a potential vaccine, like this one by Londons Imperial College and testing it by deliberately dosing them with the virus. Proponents say its faster than waiting for test subjects to be exposed to a specific virus in the real world. With numerous vaccines being developed, some scientists think challenge trials could help identify the best of them sooner. By taking that small risk on myself i can potentially protect thousands of other people from, you know, having to be infected without consenting to it. Reporter critics say challenge trials have limited use because the young, Healthy People who take part dont remit the broader population. They have been used against other viruses. This is corporate video from a london facility that recruits, exposes and strictly quarantines people to test influenza vaccines. Weve got a wonderful Safety Record that were all proud of. Reporter but there are always risks, especially with a new virus thats already killed more than a million people.
