History being made. The president meeting with kim jongun and being the first sitting president to cross into north korean territory. The two leaders met for an hour agreeing to restart Nuclear Talks all part of a weekend full of activity that could reshape u. S. Relationships in asia. This is my honor. I didnt really expect it. We were in japan for the g20. We came over. I said, hey, im over here, i want to call up chairman kim, and we got to meet and stepping across that line was a great honor. A lot of progress has been made. A lot of friendships have been made and this has been in particular a great friendship. I just want to thank you. Doubtful how great a friend kim jongun has been to the United States but no doubt President Trump loves those historic optics. Overnight north korean state media describing the trump kim dmz summit as an amazing event. Will it amount to anything beyond a photo op . That is the question. Heres Paula Hancocks live near the dmz to take on part of that debate. Paula . Reporter michelle, its the key. Can this be more than a handshake diplomacy. What comes next is very important. We heard from President Trump. He said that they would put their teams in place although the u. S. Already has a negotiating team in place. They would meet within the next two to three weeks to start talking. Of course, the working level talks are very important when it comes to this. You cant just have a top down approach. The New York Times is reporting on the fact that Trump Administration officials are telling them they may settle for a Nuclear Freeze. This is something that has been tried by past u. S. President s with varying degrees of success but at the end these deals always fell through. That would tacitly be accepting really that north korea is a nuclear state. We also understand that the deal back in hanoi, the fact that they were talking about the Nuclear Facility, the main nuclear producing facility in north korea would be shattered in return for sanctions relief. That was not accepted by washington at the time. President trump saying they wanted some of the nondisclosed sights that north korea hasnt admitted to to be part of that deal as well. Interestingly, while President Trump was standing next to president moon jaein, the president said this could be historic. Lets hear what the president said straight after meeting with president kim jongun. We want to get it right. We want to get it right and in the meantime theres been no nuclear tests, theres been no ballistic missiles. Theres been a lot of goodwill and there continues to be. Maybe if anything, better. I think probably after today better than it was even before. Clearly theres no rush when it comes to kim jongun. He is expecting or hoping to be leader for life. Theres, of course, a term limit when it comes to President Trump. Critics say there is pressure and there is a rush when it comes to his plan. Michelle . Stunning to hear talk of a deal like that after two years of the goal of complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization. Thanks, paula. All right. A temporary truce in the u. U. S. china trade war. They agreed to table new tariffs and continue negotiations. The president is optimistic about a new deal with china. You just recently, hours ago, met with the chinese president xi jinping. I did. Are you closer, do you think, after that meeting to a trade deal . I think so. We had a good meeting. Probably the largest deal ever made of any kind, not only trade. We got along very well. We understand each other. White house chief Economic Advisor larry kudlow said theres no guarantee that a deal will happen. As the president said, continuing the talks which had been interrupted for a while is a very big deal. No promises. No deal made. Theres no timetable. I want to emphasize that. Investors do like the news of a temporary truce. Wall street futures are positive ahead of the opening bell. Something to remember, existing tariffs on chinese goods are still in place and will continue to hit u. S. Businesses. Futures are also higher after trump said he would lift some restrictions on chinese tech giant huawei. Trump said huawei will be saved for the end of trade talks from washington and beijing. Kamala harriss campaign punching back from online a being at thats from their race including one from donald trump jr. Someone suggested harris was unfairly portraying herself as africanamerican since shes the daughter of a jamaican father and an indian mother. One of them from an alt right commentator retweeted by trump jr. , since deleted. A spokesperson tells the New York Times he was just asking if it was true. They were dismissing the attack saying, quote, this is the same type of racist attack his father used to attack barack obama. It didnt work then, it wont work now. Harris was asked if she was surprised by some of the online backlash from the black community . We are a nation that has a lot to be proud of and there are aspect of our history that we cannot be proud of. Theres a history of race and segregation. Harriss 2020 democratic rivals coming to her defense. Cory booker for one tweeting this. Well let you read it for yourselves. Others are weighing in on twitter and on tv. The tweet of donald trump jr. Was the act of a coward. You see what they do. You see whats out there and then he deletes it so he can say it was just a mistake. We have a president who is a racist and apparently based on a statement yesterday his son is following in his footsteps. Meantime, the Harris Campaign confirms two more endorsements from members of the congressional black caucus. Congressman bobby rush and congresswoman frederico wilson. Harris leads biden by one. Cory booker is renewing his criticism of joe biden on civil rights issues. Biden has faced backlash for working with two late segregationist senators. That came before Kamala Harris called him out before the debate. Booker suggested biden was not up to the task of reconciliation. When it comes to difficult issues with race, if you cant talk openly and honestly about your own development on these issues, i think its very hard to lead our country forward and right now the Vice President to me is not doing a good job at bringing folks together. In fact, hes caused and ive heard this from people all around the country. Hes causing a lot of frustration and even pain with his words. Booker and biden both called on the other to apologize weeks ago after the initial controversy. They later spoke and neither apologized. Joe biden finds himself once again in hot water over comments at a private fundraiser. This time it was at a weekend event in seattle. Biden saying public sentiment with gay rights has come a long way. If someone made fun of a gay waiter, people would let it go. The audience pushed back declaring, not in seattle. Police trying to hold back these protesters storming that legislative building. Just look at that scene there. Wow. Broken glass windows in one spot, trying to do the same elsewhere. Absolute chaos youre seeing unfold there in hong kong. Nic robertson is live outside that very building in hong kong where it appears to have calmed some. Nic, this presumably is about far more than the controversial extradition bill. Reporter this has a lot to do with the extradition bill, it has a lot to do with the violence and it has everything to do with democracy that the young population here in hong kong holds so dear because their parents held dear to those Democratic Values. Their grandparents did. In brittain 22 years ago today handed hong kong back over, the concern always was that china would impinge its unDemocratic Values on their Democratic Values here and the legislation you just mentioned by the government to extradite some criminals to mainland china, the trial is the tip of that iceberg. What we are witnessing now is the young population here. Again, i am outside the government building. The Legislative Council building, if you like. The white house of hong kong. The protesters have moved around to a different corner of the building. Half an hour ago i was standing outside a smashed window. The police were behind it. The protesters had broken through there. Now theyre trying to break into the doors of just around another side of the government building. It seems to be in some ways symbolic because when they break the windows, they leave them. Here theres no police lined up behind these windows. Its a systematic thud, thud, thud of the crowd using everything they can find, metal bars. Theyre ripping up some of the barricades that the police have put out here to stop them getting access and literally ripping them up, tearing them apart and using trollies full of rocks, whatever they can to get inside the building. Our view is slightly obscured by the mass of umbrellas there that i can just hear that glass crunching with each thud of the rocks, of the metal bars that the people, the protesters, young protesters are using. Of course, meanwhile not far away hundreds of thousands of people in peaceful protests in hong kong as they do every year marking the anniversary of the handover from british rule. This year is something extraordinary. It is chaos. No one knows where it is going today. For those just realizing the situation, the umbrellas, hard hats symbols of a situation showing no signs of slowdown. 5 17 p. M. There. Thanks, nic. U. S. Customs and Border Protection will have to allow Health Experts into a detention facility. By july 12th cbp needs to ensure the sites are safe and sanitary and to assess the kids conditions. One in clint, texas, has been described as filthy. That got the attention of plenty of lawmakers, including some 2020 president ial democratic candidates. Cnns natasha chen has more from clint, texas. Reporter dave and michelle, beto orourke addressed a very enthusiastic crowd here. He said on day one of his presidency he would use his executive authority to stop the Inhumane Treatment of children, reunite families and remove the fear of deportation for dreamers and people under tps, temporary protective status. Julian castro was here on saturday reemphasizing that he would like to decriminalize crossing into the United States between ports of entry. I asked beto orourke about where he differs on that issue. He said he would rather rewrite that section of law, rewrite section 1325 as part of a Bigger Picture of his immigration reform. Now he also proposes that people can apply from their own country. I asked orourke if that would put people at greater risk. He gave an example of a woman who risked her life, nearly died crossing into the u. S. Heres what he had to say. If she can apply for asylum back home in guatemala and if we would handle that asylum claim expeditiously with respect to her and allow her to come to this country if she meets asylum, that spares them the very dangerous journ jie. Let me be very clear. If she decides to make that journey, that shouldnt in any way undermine her claim for asylum. Reporter later today we are expecting mostly democratic members of the house and state representatives. They will be touring the clint facility and speaking to us afterwards about what theyre seeing inside. Back to you. Thanks, natasha. Remember, its a judge having to rule that these sites have to be safe and sanitary. It took a judge to ebb sure that to happen. A lot of progress has been made. A lot of friendships have been made and this has been in particular a great friendship. So i just want to thank you. Great friendship with a murderous dictator. No doubt President Trump loves the historic optics here. Overnight north korean state media describing this as an amazing event but will it amount to anything beyond a photo op. Lets bring in Paula Hancocks. If this New York Times reporting this morning is correct, the u. S. Has significantly lowered the bar on their expectations with north korea. Reporter thats right, dave. Were here reading in the New York Times that Trump Administration officials are telling them that they may settle for a Nuclear Freeze as opposed to this complete verifiable, weaker denuclearization theyve been talking about all along. This is something the previous administrations have tried with varying degrees of success but ultimately all of those deals have collapsed. Now the New York Times also saying that potentially the u. S. Administration is going to look once again at that deal that north korea offered in hanoi back in february, which is effectively the main Nuclear Facility being shut down completely and being closed in return for some sanctions being eased. Now interestingly, we did see when President Trump was standing next to president moon jaein at the president ial office in seoul, president moon talked about this and touted it as an option and President Trump didnt correct him. Lets listen to what President Trump was saying just after he met kim jongun at the border. We want to get it right. We dont want to were not looking for speed. Were looking to get it right, and in the meantime theres been no nuclear tests. Theres been no ballistic missiles. Theres been a lot of goodwill and there continues to be. Maybe if anything, better. After today better than it was even before. There will be a lot of focus now on what comes next to see whether this is anything more than just handshake diplomacy. Dave . Indeed. Paula hancocks live. Thank you. A temporary truce in the u. S. china trade war. During the g20 chinese president and President Trump agreed to table new tariffs and continue negotiations. The president telling fox news he is optimistic about a deal with china. You just recently, hours ago, met with the chinese president xi jinping. I did. Are you closer, do you think, after that meeting with a trade deal . We had a very good meeting. Probably, i guess youd say, the largest deal made of any kind, not only trade. We got along very well. We understand each other. White house chief Economic Advisor larry kudlow said theres no guarantee a deal will happen. As the president said, continuing the talks which had been interrupted is a very big deal. No promises, no deal made. No timetable, i want to emphasize that. Investors like the news of a temporary truce. Wall street futures are very positive. Something to remember, existing tariffs on chinese goods are still in place and will continue to hit businesses. Futures are higher after President Trump said he would lift some restrictions on hua i huawei. I should note republican senator tom bourosso said huawei would be a trojan horse in entering u. S. Space. Lets discuss this with josh rogan and josh actually beat the president to north korea by 17 years and he tweeted out the visual proof. So, josh, the obvious question is, which trip was more consequential or provided more in terms of International Diplomacy and more seriously, whats your rae action to the New York Times reporting this morning that the u. S. Would essentially searching for a Nuclear Freeze with snaur. Well, i have to say that my trip across the dmz into new york was equally as consequential as President Trumps trip a day theres still time, josh. Now that my picture has been widely circulated on cnn. We might see some progress. Lets cross our fingers. Right. What were seeing is that the president has done something good, which is to keep the process of peace alive, but its simply not enough. Theres no actual progress and theres no you know, we look at this reporting in the New York Times. You can see that as one idea by some officials who want to push this idea of a freeze, but thats not actually u. S. Policy. Theres no actual indication on the north korean side that the fundamentals of this dynamic have changed at all. Theyre not showing any willingness to be denuclearized. Their negotiators have been missing for the last few weeks. If this starts the process again, fine, thats all well and good. We have to see that as a net positive. Until theres some indication that these talks are producing some result, im going to put this in the category of good photo op. A deal like that would be a huge reversal from the two years of the goal being complete verifiable, irreversible denuclearization. We used to hear were going to do this quickly. We cant delly daily. I think what youre seeing here is a tension between the needs of diplomacy and National Security and the political needs of the president of the United States. For President Trump the process is the thing. As long as he can keep the process going and run for reelection as a peace maker, thats good enough. For people in the National Security buyreaucracy who are ot of these, the process is not enough. Unless the process reaches actual progress on keeping all of us safe, this is going to be seen as a fools errand. I am hearing from multiple Foreign Policy minds that lets not get too disgusted by it being a photo op with a dictator at this point. Sure. This could be it could amount to a diplomatic opening. Just to put it in context, remember the Iran Nuclear Deal prevented iran from obtaining or developing a nuclear weapon. That was called the worst, horrible, terrible, laughable if a president is willing to accept north korea as a nuclear power. The hypocrisy baffles the mind. Lets turn to what happened or did not happen with japan out of the g20. No deal but the president punting on the additional 300 billion in tariffs. How significant was that development and given the huawei, they will allow u. S. Companies to purchase huawei products. How significant is that with china . I think its hugely significant. We should want the process to continue. We should want diplomacy to continue. We should want diplomacy to continue. Those are all necessarily good things but at what price . The fact that the president gave huawei concessions unknown. Larry kudlow on several morning shows tried to clarify. I watched all of it and i couldnt make heads nor tails of it. He doesnt know what the president gave xi jichk ping and he put his own teams on it. What were seeing here is the president focusing on the optics. Thats not to say the optics are nothing, but the optics are clearly not everything. What we, again, see is the president giving concessions. Concessions are to be given if we get something in return, but basically what were seeing is bad negotiating and, you know, we can always hold out hope that in the end this will turn out to be a great deal. I still hold out that hope. Indications are that deal making is not going well. Common thread is optics. No surprise there, but look at some of these optics of President Trump with these leaders of countries where at best democracy is questionable. Listen to some of what he said about his relationships with these world leaders. Crown prince of saudi arabia, friend of mine, he sent me a very beautiful birthday card. We have a very, very good relationship. We look forward to spending some very good time together. A lot of very positive things going to come out of the relationship. Wall street journal op ed over the weekend, personal diplomacy has its uses as george h. W. Bush showed but mr. Trump doesnt need to flatter tyrants. The fact that there even needs to be an Editorial Board piece out there like that, the fact that this even needs to be said would be shocking, i think, two years ago, josh. Nkts yea yeah, or any year. There are a couple of things. The president , who, of course, must and should meet with all leaders for which we have dealings with doesnt need to lie about it, okay . He doesnt have to say things that arent true, like theres no evidence that the crown prince of saudi arabia was involved in the murder of jamal khashoggi, that he believes putin on his claims that russia didnt interfere or that kim jongun has stopped shooting ballistic missiles. All of those things are not true. Theres nothing left to defend their horrendous behavior. That doesnt make any sense at all. The most revealing moment of the weekend was when the president was asked to respond to Vladimir Putins claim that western liberalism had run its course and it was on so he lead. President trump said there are a lot of liberals in San Francisco who are doing the wrong thing. He doesnt understand the question or the concept of the american led world order has defended individual rights as a core ideal and that that has driven progress, prosperity, safety for americans. He doesnt get that. He cant defend it. Thats very sad. All of us are old enough to remember the reaction on the right when president obama suggested he might meet with another leader. Imagine what they would think if he sat down with putin, mbs. Great to have you. Any time. He made this emotional plea just weeks ago. Their families would love to have time with them. Breaking overnight. Chaos on the streets of hong kong. Protesters clashing with police. They tried to storm the legislative building breaking glass windows in one spot and theyre trying to do the same elsewhere. Cnns Nic Robertson is live outside that building in hong kong. Nick, some extraordinary moments there. This is ongoing, isnt it . Its certainly ongoing. Im surrounded and im literally at the front line of the protests. Theyve used these umbrellas so that the police cant see whats going on. If you can see, theyve got a bar through the glass here. Theyre troo ig to break the glass around the front of this building. Im holding back the umbrellas. Theyre smashing through this heavy, thick glass. The plated glass. It has on the back of it a plastic protective cover. This is what may stagger our viewers here. This is the government building here, the legco. Legislative council building. If you will, the equivalent of the white house in the United States. The protesters here are systematically breaking through the windows of this building. There are thousands of young protestors around me here. Some are coming armed with cameras, other with metal bars. This is one of the bars that the protesters were using to try to break through the windows. Theyre improvising in whatever way they can to try to show their disapproval of the government. This is the seat of the government. Their message to the government is to repeal those extradition laws that would send some extreme criminals to china for trial. They see that as an erosion of their basic fundamental democratic freedoms here. Its the tip of the iceberg here, if you will. Thats the way that they see it. Sort of a bridge head, if you will. That they see that the Chinese Government would slowly, slowly eat away the democratic freedoms that they have and that their heirs have had. We are literally at the front line of this protest. What youre seeing now is protestors bringing forward a metal barricade and my guess is, as weve seen them in other places, be careful, thank you, what weve seen them do in other places in this building is try to use these barricades, get a lot of people running behind them, get some momentum, drive them into windows, but also what weve seen elsewhere is once the protestors have smashed the windows, they tend to move on to somewhere else. They havent so far tried to swarm in the building. This is a tension thats been going on here now for hours and hours. I have to say, it is building. It is building in momentum. Again, i have to say the reason for these umbrellas that the protesters are putting behind me here is because they want to hide their faces from the police. They dont want the Police Ultimately to be able to prosecute them. Elsewhere in hong kong, of course, hundreds of thousands of people are holding a peaceful protest, a peaceful demonstration. Its the 22nd anniversary of when the British Government handed overrule from the British Government back to hong kong. That was 22 years ago. This protest has a long way to run today. Michelle .
