Debate stage. Joe biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and south bend mayor pete buttigieg. M. J. Lee is live in miami with highlights of the first debate. M. J. Reporter good morning, guys. Ten democrats trying to maximize the very little time that they had to introduce themselves to voters, to talk about their policy ideas and to even try to have some break out moments when you didnt hear a lot of personal info, but there were a lot of disagreements whether it came to policy. Ten democratic president ial hopefuls tried their best to be heard taking on a crowded stage in miami. Leading this field, senator Elizabeth Warren. When you have an economy that does much for those with money and isnt doing great for everyone else, that is corruption pure and simple. We need to call it out. We need to attack it head on. Reporter the candidates barely mentioning donald trump. Well say adios to donald trump. The biggest problem is donald trump. Reporter it fizzled into testy exchanges. Julio castro emotional delivering his plan for Immigration Reform highlighting the father and daughter who drowned crossing the rio grande after crossing into the United States. Watching that image is heartbreaking. It should also piss us all off and it should spur us to action. If i were president today, i would sign an executive order that would get rid of trumps zero tolerance policy. Reporter the humanitarian crisis at the border and the policy of separating families kicked off an argument. Im talking about a comprehensive rewrite of our laws. Thats not true. Section 18, title 18 of the u. S. Code, tight 281 and tight 282 already cover it. No smuggling or drug trafficking. If you did your homework on this issue you would know we need to repeal this. Reporter new york city mayor bill de blasio blasting orourke on health care. Would you replace private insurance . No. I think the choice is fund 5789al to our ability. Private insurance is not working for tens of millions of americans when you talk about the copays, deductibles, premiums, outofpocket expenses, its not working. Its not working. They can choose medicare. Congressman, you have to start by acknowledging its not working for people. Reporter de blasio and warren weighing in on eliminating private health insurance. Medicare for all. Health care is a basic human right and i will fight for basic human rights. Reporter senator cory booker getting personal about the gun control debate. Im tired of hearing people, all they have to offer is thoughts and prayers. In my faith, people say they will find a way. The reason we have a problem is weve let the corporate gun lobby frame this debate. It is time that we have bold actions and a bold agenda. Reporter army veteran Tulsi Gabbert slamming tim ryan. We cannot think that were going to somehow squash this taliban. I didnt say squash them. I didnt say squash them. When we werent in there, they started flying planes into our buildings so im just saying right now they didnt attack us on 9 11, al qaeda. Al qaeda attacked us. Thats why i and so many other people joined the military, to go after al qaeda, not the taliban. On abortion, senator Amy Klobuchar receiving a roaring round of applause. We do have one candidate thats advanced the ball and we have to have access for everyone. Senator klobuchar im fascinated by this. I just want to say theres three women up here that have fought pretty hard for a womans right to choose. Ill start with that. Reporter klobuchar winning over the crowd once again delivering this oneliner about President Trumps oneliner of the handling of iran. This president every single day is ten minutes away from going to war, one tweet away from going to war and i dont think we should conduct Foreign Policy in our bathrobe at 5 00 in the morning. Reporter guys, were going to do it all over again tonight with 10 other Democratic Candidates including joe biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and pete buttigieg. Speaking about Bernie Sanders, his day is not going to be all about debate prep. Hell visit an immigration holding area. M. J. , thank you. Stay with us. Were going to talk more about night one of the debates with sarah esker. And john avlon. You have been here before and seen all of this play out before. How did you think last night went . When all you do when you watch these is you think back to the staff and what they are doing behind the scenes. Its like dropping your kid off for the first day of school. You walk them out. Cry a little. Awkward interaction, you wave goodbye and youll do wait. You pick them up. Did they get enough to eat. Did they like that snack you packed for them . You know what theyre capable of and you want them to do your best and then you just have to watch. For me, youre reliving those. When you watch beto get beat up by other kids on the playground, oh, no, my kid doe. What are they thinking . Who did you think had a good first day. I didnt think anyone actually improved their standing. Like i dont think well see a huge bump in the polls for anyone, if i had to pick a winner, its booker. Senator booker. I thought he introduced himself well. Showcased that he was a little bit different in tone and message. I didnt think warren did herself any harm and then there was sort of the what we will see as rant who some did very well. Delaney did very well. Do i think hes going to rocket up towards the top . No. If you are looking for a cabinet spot, you may take a look at him. Joe lockheart . Joe has not moved. Hes being very youve got him. Joe, what do you think . What are your major impressions . I think Elizabeth Warren did what she needed to do to kind of cement being the adult in the room. She scored points early. I think the moderates at the table really didnt challenge her in any way. I think there was a lot of talk about trump not being a big part of this. In fact, i think he was. His policies were called out consistently. All of the candidates seem to want to tell their lifes story in a way that is in stark contrast to trump, you know, who inherited, you know, a lot of money prfrom his dad. There were a lot of talk about Hard Scrabble youth and i think warren did enough because i think the pressure was on her to do enough. Otherwise id say Julian Castro was the most animated on the issue that seemed to captivate the crowd, which was immigration. John . I think booker had a strong night. Elizabeth warren was the frontrunner. Those trending in the polls did themselves a favor. Not just jewel yes castro. Congressman ryan had a very empassioned argument rooted in personal experience about the working class and the Democratic Party is seen as too elite. They need to reach out to the workers. Beto got why . It was the moment with julio castro . It wasnt just that moment. I think beto was right on policy. But he did seem like a convenient punching bag for folks because he came in as such a star and he had a tough time to convert. Key moment for me last night in substance together, hes given an answer about the public option. This is something barack obama wanted for his health care plan. Its insufficiently radical for folks who want to take away all private insurance, which is de blasio and warren. De blasio is pretty brutal. Rob did elaney says we need to preserve what works and changing what doesnt. Lets be radical and not practical. Beto i think had the worst night. A lot of the folks who had been really obscure show they had a place on the set. Look, im a data guy. Its not polling. Its google searches. If you look at this, cory booker was the most searched during the day. Tulsi gabbard was second. Beto orourke is third. Then down at sixth, a lot of people thought Julian Castro had a good debate. Google made sure to point out to us that searches on Julian Castro spiked 4,000 , m. J. , 4,000 over the course of the debate. If you are looking about improvement, its hard to argue Julian Castro did not have a huge improvement during that debate. Well, i mean, if you look at someone like Julian Castro, i think he was one of the candidates going into this debate with so much at stake because his candidacy has failed to take off so far, right . He has not had any momentum in the polls. He is not getting probably the kind of coverage that his campaign would like him to get. I think the fact that he seized on the issue of immigration to really make this forceful and powerful impression on voters who might be actually tuning in to exactly who he is for probably the first time last night, i think that was a really important moment for him. And, guys, one of the biggest take aways for me latz night watching this debate was just actually how far away the general election feels right now because the point of last night and sort of the big theme mat particulars of last night was really about the primaries. We didnt hear Donald Trumps name being invoekt very much. We didnt hear candidates going out of their way to try to attack the president , especially on issues like moral clarity, which i found surprising given the images of immigration and being separated from their families and pouncing on the Trump Administration and the policies over that over the last couple of weeks. Im surprised that that didnt come up more. I think it showed how much the debate stage was set to draw distinction between themselves before they can pivot. 494 days to the election im being told. Thats a blink of an eye. M. J. s point is they treated this as a primary. They have to be different. John, theyre going for it. The other nine candidates, its clear they dont think those are the voters that they need to win the primary. They may think of that. Its not what it may seem to be if youre focusing on identity politics in an inclusive way. This is obviously a primary debate. Its striking how few of them were reaching for the commander in chief test. This is what this is about. A credible candidate. Voters in wisconsin yet. Yes. Hold those thoughts. Stick around. We want to let you know you should also stick around. We have three of the president ial candidates coming up on new day. We have Julian Castro, beto orourke and jay inslee. It will be interesting to get their take as theyre waking up. This morning we have much more to chew on. What kind of avenue did they leave for tonight . Like joe biden. Stick around. Ten candidates. Were back and im a data guy. What other piece of data do we have last night . Who talked the most . Cory booker spoke for, you can see it up there, 10 55. He was number one. Way down at the bottom was jay inslee with 4 52. He spoke twice. What does that tell us . Hes a talker. They all got the same amount of time. Did he interrupt or they directed more questions . I think they directed more questions, perhaps, and also that booker did seize the moment. Joe, what does it mean in terms of in terms of how the candidates chose to approach it versus how we perceived it . Well, i think there was an attempt by msnbc to focus on the higher polling candidates, Elizabeth Warren really dominated the first hour. I think its not so much the amount of time, its when they have that time. I think after about an hour i think most people, you know, its sort of all blended in a little bit. And its not just how much time you have, its what you say. Jay inslee made two great points. One was Climate Change was his issue. He said donald trump is the greatest National Security threat to the United States. So people remember moments as opposed to, you know, this person spoke for six minutes, this person spoke for eight minutes. I wouldnt take too much meaning to that. Again, i think the timing of it with warren dominating the beginning. The beginning of the debate felt like, you know, Elizabeth Warren, what do you think . All of the other candidates needed to react to her. While it really was dominated. Some believe Julian Castro had a great night and he was able to move the needle. Lets take a look where he went after beto orourke about the immigration policies. Listen to this. Title 18 of the u. S. Code, title 21 and title 22 already cover this. I think you should research this issue. If you did your homework on this issue you would what did you see Julian Castro doing, sarah, in that moment . You know, i actually it was a it was a little hard to hear. I never like cross talk in debates and i thought when de blasio entered, i wondered if there would be a response. Some people liked it and for me it was cling worthy. Its like when a guy takes your armrest on the plane. I felt like he was strategically going after beto orourke. I did, too. He had a stronger molt when he was talking about the immigration. He said, we should be pissed off. I thought he was going to try to do a moist eye thing, he didnt. It pivoted and translated well on tv far more than the cross talk. What he did there was to prove or try to prove that this is the original moment. Lets play that right there. Watching that image of oskar and his daughter is heartbreaking. It should also piss us all off. If i were president today [ applause ] and it should spur us to action. If i were president today i would sign an executive order that gets rid of trumps zero tolerance policy, remain in mexico policy and the metering policy. The metering policy is what prompted them to make the risky swim across the way. Hes also, john, were talking about a moment. Thats right. I do think because he said we should have our hearts broken and we should be pissed. Then he had the policy right. Heres what i would do to change that. Heres how trumps policies possibly led to that moment. Charles, did you think by going after beto he made it look like he was running in a Texas Senate Primary more than he wanted i think thats exactly why it was so awkward. It wasnt just two folks from that going after it. I wasnt listening to the argument. The issue of decriminalization. This was decidedly far left last night. Beto getting attacked for backing the left option. When de blasio repreeced his line, theres plenty of money, just in the wrong hands, theres no specificity and no push back. A lot plays into Donald Trumps playbook but theyre focused on the primary. Jay, Elizabeth Warren, she came out of the gate strong. The first question went to her. She was ready with i guess her what she said on the stump. She has all of her policies and do you think she helped herself . I think because she was center stage and because she was a frontrunner on that stage last night, clearly a lot of questions were for her, especially in the first hour. She seized the moment in the beginning to lay out the big picture argument. The big theme ma particulars, right, that she is for up ending the system in washington, that we have a system in washington that doesnt work for the middle class or working families. This is a system that works for big corporations and the rich. I think the one moment that stood out for me the most when it comes to Elizabeth Warren is how she handled medicare for debate night. You know this is a question that has to come up because its such a critical issue for her but in the primaries in general. The way the question was asked, do you support and agree with Bernie Sanders on the issue of medicare for all. It is not an accident that she answered that question by saying i am with bernie on medicare for all. She was clearly making the point that not only am i supportive of his bill, this is an issue that i am on the same page as him on. What she did thinking and this is the strongest ive heard her take a stance. Well play that moment for everybody. It was interesting to hear why she says they are the villains. Again, we expect to see the president very shortly. Caitlyn . Reporter yeah, hes going to get here in the next half hour or so, john. The only thing scheduled tonight is a working dinner. Its tomorrow when youre going to really see things get underway and see a lot of scrutiny for the meetings. Fresh up, of course, is a meeting with the host of the summit, Prime Minister shinzo abe who the president spoke about as he was coming here. If america was attacked, japan would watch it on television. The one after that is with the german chancellor, angela merkel. The president criticized them talking about the unequal spending for nato. The third leader that the president is going to be meeting with tomorrow is one he did not criticize as he was leaving town. Thats russian president vladimir putin. The president has made clear he doesnt seem to be intent on bringing up election interference with the russian president. This will be their first facetoface meeting, john, since the Mueller Report came out. The next day the president has another series of sensitive meetings on his schedule. The first one is with the saudi crown prince. The president said he doesnt find him personally responsible and you say it essentially with the crown prince. Two other big meetings is with turkish president erdogan and chinese president xi jinping. The trade deal will be looming over that. Whether or not a trade deal will be moving forward. What our sources are telling us is theyre hoping this will restart the trade talks and make progress. We know theyve essentially been stalled since they broke down in washington several weeks ago. What i saw was a facility that was clearly overcrowded. We were sent to an area, nine cells with 20 to 24 people in them. The cells were clearly overcrowded. Many looked disheveled, sick, in quarantine. I saw children as young as 1 and 2 years old. Some sleeping on the ground. When asked why they wanted to let us in here, they said they had to defend themselves against allegations of inhumane conditions. Its important for the press to see whats actually happening here. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum this morning you might say its time for the hangover in the first 2020 debate binge. The first half of the democratic debates were last night. What did the voters think about it. We sent Martin Savidge to a bar, or as he likes to call it, a pub. Getting peoples reaction of what they thought while this was going on. Reporter its true dedication on my part, john. I have to tell you, most people, democrats in South Carolina are very familiar with these candidates because most of the candidates were in South Carolina just a couple of days ago all speaking at the Democratic State convention. That said, last night was an opportunity for voters to hear a lot more than campaign stump speeches. At a pub called conleys in greenville, South Carolina, they gathered for debate round one. I want to learn more about all of the different candidates. I want to be able to refine and kind of pick out which one seems to be more electable really at this point. A lot of them do have really similar positions. I think this is their opportunity to take assertive stances and make themselves stick out. Reporter for the first half hour the crowd seemed to find fewer standouts. That changed as the split screen started, the candidates took on each other like when beto orourke and Julian Castro debated. Im looking at everyone. You like that sparring back and forth . Absolutely. I think its important, again, for citizens to see the differences between where they stand. Reporter who won that one . I think castro did. He has more experience but he hasnt been on the national stages much. Reporter in fact, it was the lesser known candidates that seemed to stand out the most for these democrats, like the congressman from ohio. I noticed you were watching tim ryan i think. I really like tim ryan. What did you like about hem . Tulsi respect. Shes lesser known. If you look at her compared to the other candidates, shes poised, president ial, saying a little less and saying it well might be more in the end. Reporter most of the crowd didnt stay for the full two hours. Only a handful hung onto the bitter end. I think a lot of good ideas that bring back the country to civility, to truth. Reporter for these democrats round one didnt provide any knockouts or clearcut winners, only more to ponder. I think it helped me better understand overall the candidates, not just the general ideas of what they stand for but the actual policies that theyre going to implement. Reporter a lot of the voters that we were talking to last night said, look, they didnt expect these debates would help them choose a candidate, but they are hoping it would help them whittle the list down to something more manageable, the top five. That said, im not sure last night helped in that regard. Many of them say the candidates are in round two so well be back for more tonight. Thats dedication. Alison. I think first of all some of the candidates like andrew yang may be able to get another breath of air by differentiating themselves. What theyve got to do that didnt happen last night is theyre putting out very far left visions of policy. Its not enough to say im going to take all of the money from the rich and take it from the poor. How . There is a reality litmus test for someone who wants to be president of the United States. Joe biden is on stage tonight, thats going to be the huge difference. Hes the frontrunner. Hes polling over 30 in the polls. He probably watched last night and thought, you know what, they didnt lay a finger on me. Yeah, no, they focused on each other and on telling their own stories. If i want to pick up on johns point a little bit. I really do think that this race is kind of a risk assess thamt democrats are taking. I think there are some democrats, particularly progressives, that say this is the time for bold action. Elizabeth warren spoke to that last night. I think theres a lot of other democrats who are saying this is time to beat donald trump and we ought to be we ought to put forward a candidate whos not going to be open to the socialist tag or Something Like that. I think in last nights debate there wasnt a lot of pushback on Elizabeth Warren. I think this medicare for all and saying that youre going to aboli abolish private insurance is a real problem with moderate democrats. I think tonight youre going to see a much bigger fight. Theres much more power in the Center Tonight not just with biden but with buttigieg and others, Kamala Harris. I do think that thats what i expect to see much more engagement on tonight. And when joe says engagement, do you imagine the other candidates going after biden . Challenging biden on the stage . We have a gravitational pull. Especially if the innernl gi in the party is on the left. This is where i think the food fight that there was last night. Very undisciplined debate by both the candidates and moderators not being able to control it. Could really hurt biden. Because if he looks like hes being talked over, talked across despite the fact that hes got the largest gravitational pull as the best known figure in the race, that could be a problem. He has to show that hes vital, vibrant, crisp. I think, joe, though that he may just talk above. I dont mean like louder, i mean in a different plane than everyone was talking last night and the people on stage. That electability lane and i dont know whether youll be tonight. Go ahead, joe. I agree with that. In some ways thats what Elizabeth Warren did. No one really challenged her. They were two inches to getting their stories out rather than challenging her story. I do think there will be some push back, but i want to push back a little bit on john on the undisciplined. This was a very different debate than we saw in 2016 where donald trump seemed to pull everybody down into the gutter and really, you know, make it a clown show. There were a lot of good ideas. I hope tonight they get into a better report. They were given a strong message to focus on but he seemed nargelized by the gravitational pull. Well see where that is. Thank you. Here are your late night laughs. When beto was abla espanol, in the closed captioning it just said, speaking foreign language. How do you like that . Really got through. Really penetrated. Foreign language . Can we get a look at nbcs closed captioning guy . Yeah, makes sense. Cory booker saw beto speaking and decided to join in. Watch him. He sounds like Arnold Schwarz schwarzenegger learning rosetta stone. Oh, snap. It is on. It is an espanol off or as they say in spanish, groupo idiotas. Thats what you want to avoid. If youre in debate prep thinking about whether its a good idea to try this if youre on a team, thats the one thing you want to avoid. So they should have just let, what, the first one speak spanish like beto and then not done it . I dont know. They really jumped on the espanol. Si. New days special coverage of the first democratic debate continues right now. On day one we end the i. C. E. Policies for violating human rights. Watching that image of oskar and his daughter is humiliating. It should piss us off. There are three women out there who fought really hard for a womans right to choose. Ill start with that. This is not about making it trump all the time. This is the moment. Democrats can say, heres our vision for the america that we can build. This is new day okay. We want to welcome our viewers around the United States and around the world. This is new day. It is 6 00 now in new york and we begin with who dominated and who disappointed in the first democratic primary debate. Senator Elizabeth Warren made the most of her time on the stage as the only candidate polling above 5 . She was asked the first question of the debate and got the last word in as the final candidate to deliver a closing argument. Heres a moment. I am in this fight because i believe that we can make our government, we can make our economy, we can make our country work not just for those at the top. We can make it work for everyone. And i promise you this. I will fight for you as hard as i fight for my own family. There were some big moments and some big surprises. Some of the candidates who had been polling lower recently, they managed, perhaps, to break through. Listen to Julian Castro when he was talking to beto orourke about the issue of immigration. Title 18 of the u. S. Code, title 21 and title 22 already cover human trafficking. I think you should do your homework on this issue. If you did your homework on this issue, you would know we should during the debate among the ten who were on stage. And of course,
