Also top of mind, his tariffs, speaking about tariffs moments ago as he departed to normandy. Border security is the president s Sticking Point and migrant arrests have surged to the largest monthly total in more than a decade. Plus, the fbi just released its file on big foot, what did they find about the mythical creature also known as sasquatch. Good morning and welcome to early start, im christine romans, my kids will be interested in that. Im dave briggs, thursday, june 6th. 4 00 a. M. In the east, 10 00 a. M. In normandy, france, where we begin this morning with hearts and minds focussed on the 75th anniversary of dday, Operation Overlord as it was once known. Thousands gather to commemorate the allies, huge invasion of france on june 6th, 1944, an assault that marked the beginning of the end of world war ii. World leaders will gather to remember the triumph and sacrifice made there. The president is focussed on key tariff negotiations with mexico. This is Vice President pence meeting at the white house with mexicos foreign minister. The president demanding more action to stop the record surge of migrants at the u. S. Border. Officials say Border Patrol agents encountered more migrants in april than any month in the last 13 years. Heres the president talking a short time ago. Weve told mexico, the tariffs go on and i mean it too, and im very happy with it, and a lot of people, senators included, they have no idea what theyre talking about when it comes to tariffs. They have absolutely no idea. Were the piggy bank. The United States is the piggy bank, it has all the money that others want to take from us. Theyre not taking it so easy anymore. Its a lot different. The president has been consistent with that theme, the piggy bank. He also talked about democrats. Lets listen to that. The democrats, congress has been a disaster. They wont change. They wont do anything. They want free immigration, immigration to pour into our country. They dont care who it is. They dont care what kind of a record they have. It doesnt make any difference. Theyre not going to be changing anything. We go to them say lets fix the immigration laws. They just want it to do badly. The worse it does, the happier they are. Thats the way it will be until after the election. Thats the president before heading to normandy. We have excerpts of his speech hell be given later this morning. The president has taken a direct route to supporting our alliances and nato. It does appear he has come full circle. Here are excerpts from the speech, today we remember those who fell here and we honor all who fought here. They won back in ground for civilization, and heres where we talk about the alliances with the next excerpt if he is clearly supporting today, to all our friends and partners, our cherished alliance was forged in the heat of battle, tested in the trials of war and proven the blessings of peace, our bond is unbreakable. It was early in his administration that he was giving a speech and pulled out a line about reaffirming article 5 and nato, and committed to our selfmutual defense. Today is the most important example of how those alliances worked, and even better than that, the americans and the british post the world war ii victory designed how the global system was going to be, how these alliances were going to work so everyone had a mutual interest so that you didnt have a rise of a nazi germany again are where it was one country that could go it alone that way. But the president has rejected that post world war ii architecture which is so fascinating that he has chosen to use or his speech writers have chosen to use those words today. Perhaps he has been moved by, you know, talking with Angela Merkel and other world leaders, theresa may, those who know well the sacrifices of our allies. Here are looiive pictures from normandy, dday commemorations getting underway. This is a solemn day. Here are the men we should focus on, the veterans, most of them in their 90s, those who served Operation Overlord. It is Hallowed Ground there. It is american soil so when you step into the American Cemetery, it is you are on american soil and you are surrounded by all of those crosses and stars of david marking the graves of the men who died storming that beach. Its just such an important day, really really determined the 20th century for the world. And if you dont get a chance to watch some of the ceremony today, later this morning with your family, you can get on you tube with your kids. You can listen to a podcast with your kids of original bbc broadcast of that day or fdrs speech or eisenhowers speech as well. You get a sense of the sacrifice, the commitment that our alliance made as they took on what seemed unwinnable, 150,000 troops storming the atlantic wall that seemed impenetratable at the time. But they did it. They did it. Well continue to look at the live pictures at the American Cemetery in normandy. The president s top trade adviser seems to give an ultimatum. Mr. Trump is prepared to back off his threat only if he gets the right deal. We believe that these may not have to go into effect precisely because we have the mexicans attention. Have the mexicans attention. Look, they go into effect on monday. You would have to be asking mexico to stop that in two or three days. They have taken steps to beef up enforcement. The number one demand is for mexico to take the Asylum Seekers and applying mexican laws, which he says are much stronger than ours. As we mentioned, theres been a stunning rise in migrant crossings at the southern border in may. According to u. S. Customs and border protection, 144,000 migrants apprehended encountered, acting cvp commissioner john sanders telling reporters, we are in a quote full blown emergency. There was no deal yesterday to stop President Trumps threat to stop tariffs on all mexican goods. The president saying this in ireland yesterday. They have to step up and if they dont, tariffs will go on. If they go high, companies are going to move into the United States. Its very simple. Its not really that simple. We trade a lot back and forth with mexico. Mexico is americas biggest supplier of ag products, 26 billion in 2018. Mexico will not pay these tariffs. American businesses will pay the tariffs and then they can either eat the profit or pass that on to consumers. John corden of texas laid out the cost clearly on the senate floor yesterday. Tariffs on the other hand would be a massive tax. The u. S. Chamber estimates that texas alone would face 5. 35 billion in increased costs as a result of a 5 tariff that could take effect as early as monday. This translates into about a thousand dollars more on a car. If Deutsche Bank estimates it would be more than like 1,300 per car. Then theres this, a study found the 5 tariff would cost the u. S. More than 400,000 jobs. The president is using tariffs to punish mexico on illegal immigration, a move senator jeff merkley essentially called hypocritical. This is not about tariffs. This is saying were going to use it as a weapon in foreign policy. They also say, and by the way, the instability in central america, this is coming from the dollars that come from the American Drug trade so if americans, if you quit buying drugs from central america, we wont have this problem. He also made the point that the president s threats to shut down the border are fuelling the coyotes and smugglers saying you need to pay us now to get your family across the border, so actually the president s threat swelling the numbers at the border. White house officials are scheduled for more talks. Republican senators are calling on the president to delay implementation on tariffs to mexico until he makes the case to them directly. They want to meet with him next week. I dont particularly favor the tariffs. Im afraid this will endanger american jobs. This is the wrong solution to the crisis. We think tariffs in this instance are hurting the chances of getting u. S. Mca. Not clear how many senate republicans, if any, are willing to break with the president to override the tariffs if he decides to move forward. Lets keep in mind, romans, you need some 17 republican senators to vote with all of the Democratic Senators to override anything the president does. That is not likely to say the least. Today, 75 years ago today, 150,000 allied soldiers stormed five beaches in normandy. Thousands of them would never come home. They are being remembered this morning, and were going to take you there live. Everyone could use a little romance. Even your feet. The new amope pedi perfect with diamond crystals gives you smooth results in just seconds that youll fall in love with instantly. Available at walmart in the foot care aisle. Today makes the 75th anniversary of dday, and thousands of people have gathered in normandy where in 1944 allied troops stormed those beach, many of them would not live to see another day. Their sacrifice key to the defeat of nazi rule and the creation of lasting peace in europe. That triumph, those sacrifices commemorated today, perhaps the last major remembrance where those who actually fought will be in attendance. Cnns Jim Bittermann is live in normandy, overlooking those beaches. Hi, jim. Hi christine, yes, in fact, this is the beach and i just wanted to show you this, it illustrates what kind of thing was going through the planners minds, what they had to consider. This beach is now about half gone and at low tide its much larger than this. The army and navy had an argument about this. The army wanted a high tide landing. That way soldiers wouldnt have as far to run. The navy wanted low tide because they felt they could see the obstacles the germans had put in place at low tide. In the end, they compromised and it was about one to three hours after the very lowest tide that they landed, just about what were seeing out there today. I wanted to show you, christine, a little bit of what the germans had done. They knew the allies were landing. They didnt know where. All along the coast of france and beyond, they built bunkers, like this one, 2 feet of concrete here, with a machine gun nest inside. This machine gun is clearly cited right down to the beach so they had a clear view that the soldiers were coming ashore, and this is what the allied troops had to contend with. You can see in the sea behind you, the wreckage of what was called mulberry harbor, the british engineers, American Engineers came in and basically made a landing area for all of that equipment that was going to come in for the days and days and days after that successful landing, and you can still see it there rotting in the ocean as a remembrance of the engineering feat that was that morning. Thats absolutely right. These are big concrete shells that were built over in england, and floated across the channel. Part of the meticulous planning that went on, floating across the channel and sunk here to be a break water for the other parts of the mulberry harbor, which were what they call the whales, these were metal railways that could bring in the tons of material youre talking about. Just amazing the feat of bravery, of military planning, engineering, general eisenhower said, okay, well go. All that terrible weather. He picked a window and they did it, and now were commemorating that, 25 years later. Jim bittermann, thank you, nice to see you this morning. You bet. Another bump in the road for joe biden, the front runner. His Campaign Says he still backs limits on federal funds for abortion and that puts the former Vice President squarely at odds with his democratic rivals. According to the biden camp, the front runner supports the 1977 Hyde Amendment which bans state use of federal medicaid dollars to pay for abortions, except in the case of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. Biden taking a lot of heat for supporting hyde from every one of these democratic candidates. Senator Elizabeth Warren says his position is wrong and the measure needs to go. I dont support the Hyde Amendment, and i will lead the fight to have it overturned. Could the nominee be someone who does . This isnt about the politics, this is about whats right. The Hyde Amendment should not be american law. It has to be pointed out that biden appears the Hyde Amendment, seems to have flipflopped. Listen to what he told an aclu activist just last month. Will you commit to abolishing the Hyde Amendment which hurts poor women and women of color. Yes, and by the way, the aclu, perfect voting record my entire career. I heard you did, but im glad you just said you would commit to abolishing the Hyde Amendment. Right now it cant stay. You just heard the former Vice President tell that woman twice that he opposes the Hyde Amendment. His Campaign Says he has not changed his position. He misheard the question, and thought he was referring to the mexico city rule. You can see how he may have misunderstood that question. I was having a hard time figuring out what she was asking, loud room. He will have to answer to the position in the weeks and months ahead. The fbi has a file on big foot. Moments ago President Trump said a lot of progress has been made in tariff talks with mexico, but is it enough progress to stop them from being implemented next week . And many historians call it the most significant battle in u. S. History, the storming of normandy 75 years ago today. A solemn dday ceremony set to begin in just minutes. Were going to have it live for you. Is brita. Dad. I just got a zerowater. But weve always used brita. Its two stagefilter. Doesnt compare to zerowaters 5stage. This meter shows how much stuff, or dissolved solids, gets left behind. Our tap water is 220. Brita . 110. Seriously . But zerowater let me guess. Zero . Yup, thats how i know it is the puresttasting water. I need to find the receipt for that. Oh yeah, you do. The first survivor of ais out there. Sease and the Alzheimers Association is going to make it happen. But we wont get there without you. Visit alz. Org to join the fight. There were smoking sections on airplanes, in restaurants. And then gradually it got to be where it wasnt anywhere. Its not part of the social norm anymore, its not accepted. I was at a party this summer and there wasnt a Single Person smoking. Even in my own home, i had my own designated space to smoke. If i think about it, it really was like i was punishing myself. It was really a friend of mine that said, why wouldnt you just try the juul. And i thought hmm. Ok, ill try it. And so i went out and i bought one. The idea of going back to smoking is. I couldnt even imagine doing that. I just dont enjoy it anymore. I dont think anyone including myself thought that i could switch. A solemn ceremony this morning to remember the thousands of troops who died 75 years ago today on dday. Weve told mexico, the tariffs go on, and i mean it too. Im very happy with it. President trump speaking about tariff talks just moments ago as he departed ireland for normandy. Border security, of course, top of mind for President Trump and migrant arrests there have surged at our southern border, the largest monthly total in more than a decade. Good morning, everyone and welcome back to early start, im dave briggs. Im christine romans, its 30 minutes past the hour. We welcome all of our viewers in the skpu. S. Thats an assault that marks the beginning of the end of world war ii. World leaders will join President Trump to remember the triumph and sacrifices made here. The president demanding more action from mexico to stop the record surge of migrants at the u. S. Southern border. Officials say Border Patrol agents encountered more migrants in may in any month in the last 13 years. Were going to go now to live pictures of normandy france, 10 31 a. M. Eastern time as we await the president of the United States stepping off the plane. As we do, check with jim acosta traveling with the president. He has more on all the days events. Jim, good morning. Reporter thats right. Good morning, dave and christine. President trump has just arrived in france to commemorate the 75th anniversary of dday. Hell be appearing with the french president emanuel macron in just about a half hour from now. Hes running a little bit behind, but should be able to make up lost time as hes now on the ground in france. Were standing right next to the American Military cemetery here in normandy. It is sacred ground. Thats right. And right now we should point out as youre watching these live pictures of the president and the first lady coming off of air force one, they should be making their way over to the cemetery any moment. Were standing in just an amazing impressive sight, some 9,300 burials behind me here in the American Military cemetery at normandy. The president will be paying tribute to the fallen here on the beaches of normandy and world war ii on this 75th anniversary of dday, and we have some excerpts from the remarks hes prepared to give later this morning. We can put some up on screen. Hes going to be saying, they won back this ground for civiluaticivi civilization, to our friends and partners our cherished alliance was forged in the heat of battle, tested in the trials of war our bond is unbreakable. The president sounding as if hes talking up the common alliance, an alliance he has criticized in the past. One thing we should point out, the president when he was heading off to france earlier this morning leaving where he was staying overnight in ireland, spoke briefly with reporters. He was talking about these negotiations going on back in washington that are aimed at preventing the president s threat of imposing new tariffs on mexico. Heres what the president had to say about that. Weve told mexico the tariffs go on, and i mean it too. And im very happy with it. And a lot of people, senator includes, they have no idea what theyre talking about when it comes to tariffs. They have absolutely no idea. Were the piggy bank. The United States is the piggy bank. It has all the money others want to take from us. But theyre not taking it so easy anymore. Its a lot different. Reporter so the president had harsh words to say about mexico, not exactly sending the most diplomatic tone for these talks that the Vice President and his team will have later on today back in washington. The president went on to criticize democrats accusing democrats of really blocking any progress on the subject of immigration reform, but we should point out its many republicans right now in the senate who are talking about blocking the president s proposed tariffs on mexico. The other thing we should note, just a short while ago, i had a chance to catch up with nancy pelosi as she arrived on site in normandy, taking part in the commemoration of the dkday 75t anniversary. She made it very clear she did not want to criticize the president on foreign soil. She did not engage in any of that, but did say talking about the 75th anniversary of dday, it does remind her of the importance of u. S. Alliances with its partners in europe and around the world, something that she hinted that perhaps the president doesnt respect quite as much as she does or other do. That was as far as she would go in terms of criticizing the president. We will see the president of the United States joined with the president of france to put politics aside and remember a time when some very brave human beings saved the world from the nazis, 75 years ago. Christine and dave. Jim, it wasnt a Straight Line the president traveled there. He went over to ireland to see his golf club, and back over to normandy. Hes taken an all about path supporting our alliances and article 5 and nato. Do you get a sense that he does fully support our alliances and America First is no longer part of the president s core belief and he may not make mention of that at all today . Reporter i think it would be quite surprising and i think it would be pretty startling to the entire world if the president were to raise questions or doubts about the Nato Alliance here in normandy on Hallowed Ground. It does sound from the excerpts he plans to extol the virtue of the Nato Alliance. If past is prologue, the president has raised questions and doubts in the past, and that has really raised questions here on this side of the atlantic as to how committed the president is to the Nato Alliance. He has criticized nato members for not contributing enough of their gdp to their common defense of this alliance, and one thing i should also point out, you know, some of the president s European Partners over here, they are very concerned about this rise of nationalism, this rise of far right politics over here in europe. They see it happening around the world in places like the United States, and theyre deeply concerned as to how the president plays a role in all of that, and whether or not hes stoking nationalism to an extent that is just not welcome here in europe tor many people who are leading very important u. S. Partners and allies, germany, france and britain. Emmanuel macron, who the president will be sitting down with later this afternoon in a bilateral meeting, he was critical of nationalism, when he spoke at the Armistice Day in paris back in november. There are some big disagreements between the president of the United States and some long standing u. S. Partners over here in europe. I dont think well see that play out here in normandy during this commemoration of the 75th anniversary of dday, but the day is young, the date is not finished yet and when the president meets with emanuel macron, we may see flashes of those disagreement sgs. The president will focus on the veterans. We remember those who fell, all those who fought, they won back this ground for civilization. Jim acosta live, hell be there all morning for us. Thank you, jim. Top of mind for the administration and the president s top trade adviser, Peter Navarro saying the president is prepared to back off his threat if he gets the right deal. We believe that these tariffs may not have to go into effect precisely because we have the mexicans attention. Well, mexico has taken steps to beef up Immigration Enforcement activities. Navarro says the number one demand is for mexico to commit to taking all the Asylum Seekers and applying mexican laws which he says are much stronger than ours rchts as w ours. According to u. S. Customs and border protection, more than 144,000 migrants were apprehended or encountered last month. That is a 32 increase over april. 11,000 unaccompanied children crossing the border illegally. We are in a full blown emergency. There was no deal to stop President Trumps threat to put tariffs on all mexican goods the president said this in ireland. Needs to step up and if they dont tariffs will go on, and if they go high, the companies are going to move back into the United States. Its very simple. But the supply chains in north america are anything but simple. The u. S. Trades back and forth with mexico. It is americas biggest supplier of agricultural products, 26 billion in 2018. And remember, mexico will not pay these tariffs. American businesses will pass the cost on to consumers. John cornyn of texas laid out the cost clearly on the senate floor yesterday. Tariffs on the other hand, would be a massive tax. The u. S. Chamber estimates that texas alone would face 5. 35 billion in increased costs as a result of 5 tariffs that could take effect as early as monday. This translates into about a thousand dollars more on a car. It would be about 1,300 more per car. A new study found the 5 tariff would cost the u. S. More than 400,000 jobs. The president is using tariffs to punish mexico on illegal immigration, something that senator jeff merkley essentially called hypocritical. This is not about tariffs for an economic deal. This is saying were going to use it as a weapon in foreign policy. They would also say, and by the way, the instability in central america, this is coming from the dollars that come from the American Drug trade. If americans, if you quit buying drugs from central america, we wont have this problem. He also made this point, he said the president s threats to close the border might be driving the smugglers to basically attract and lure more people, look, the border is going to close, you got to pay now to get to the u. S. Actually, this crisis at the border, in part, fuelled by the president s threats. White house and mexican officials are scheduled for more talks on the tariff front today. Republican senators calling on President Trump to delay implementing the tariffs on mexico until he makes the case directly to their faces. They want to meet with him next week. I dont particularly favor the tariffs. Im afraid it might endanger american jobs. This is the wrong solution to the crisis. We think tariffs in this instance are hurting the chances of getting u. S. Mca. Its not clear how many senate republicans, if any, are willing to break with the president to override the tariffs if he decides to move forward. We have heard about a half dozen stand up and say they are opposed to him. You would need about 17 to unite with democrats to overturn the president. And the president says essentially they dont get it, all of those people there talking about it, dont get it. This morning he said that, yes. Hes the one who knows how to do this and Congress Just doesnt get it. They have no idea what theyre talking about when it comes to tariffs, earlier this morning. 42 minutes past the hour. 75 years ago today, 150,000 allies soldiers stormed these five beaches in normandy, france. Thousands of people have gathered in normandy where a 1944 allied troops stormed the beaches. Many of them would not live to see another day. Their sacrifice, key to the defeat of the nazi rule and creation of lasting peace in europe. That triumph and those sacrifices commemorate today perhaps the last major rememory pran remembrance of those who fought who will be in attendance. Reporter were just off of gold beach. This is where the british troops landed. Omaha beach is more that way. Of course, every country had its own landing area, designated. This was one of the places over in omaha, also here at gold beach where the allied forces built a temporary artificial harbor, and what they did was build those harbors so they could bring their supplies into the beach. Now, were speaking to you from one of the amphibious trucks that was used on the 6th of june, 1944. Not so much in the first wave of landing but in the second. That is once the first wave had gone ashore, trucks like this one, carrying some of the supplies necessary to troops already on the beaches followed, making these amphibious landings to make thousands of tons of supplies needed until the artificial courts could be built. Once they have been destroyed, there was nothing less but this huge operation, the most ambitious ever launched, ongoing on the shores of normandy, so were going to give you what happened on that day. It was of course much earlier in the day that it began. These trucks headed toward these beach, they hadded towaeaded to enemy position. Bear in mind, the bombardments that were meant to have weakened their positions simply failed to weaken them as much as they should. You can imagine for the young men and we were talking about 18, 19yearolds heading on to these beaches, many of them to certain death, one of the things thats being remembered so clearly is the extraordinary courage and sense of sacrifice that was required. You can see here all of the people that turned out. There were many thousands early on, with their trucks with their amphibious vehicles like this one. Many in costume, many wearing the military uniforms of the day, all generations combined. There are veterans here today, of the war, all in their 90s now and also men and women that fought. Who wanted to bring their children and the younger generations because so much of this is all about explaining to the young precisely what happened here on that day. And thats something that we have heard over and over again. As you can see, this truck is heading up towards this beach. The wheels come up rather noisily from the bottom of the boat. As we hit the beach, what an extraordinary feat of engineering that this should have existed in the day and lasted 75 years, and you can see still successfully capable, 75 years old, bringing us up on to the beaches just as they did in 1944. That is remarkable and you know, melissa, where you are, you know, you had five different beaches, the canadians had their beach, the british, the americans had theirs and it was not without all kinds of mistakes and mishaps because of the weather and where they landed but the fact that they could bring so much armament so quickly, so much material so quickly into those beaches at mulberry harbor, its a remarkable engineering feat, quite frankly, isnt it. Reporter thats right. There is the question of the engineering capability that they needed to have, the Communications Capability that they needed to have and on the day, a huge proportion of their Communications Capability was simply lost. So coordinating many different forces that came from many countries that had had for the couple of years before the landing took place to coordinate what was an incredible and it looks like our ability to communicate was also lost but it does paint an accurate picture of the impenetratable wall that they were attacking there, five beaches, the key to the allied invasion. The president has come a long way from America First. He will focus on the troops, on the veterans that made that brave, bold sacrifice 75 years ago today. Thats what so many people have been remarking about this morning.
