But its in keeping with what we heard from the state news agency which said in slightly toned down language if there were any sanctions put on saudi arabia then saudi arabia would double down and be just twice as strong. So that was very much perceived in many places as a threat of what President Trump had said. So it wasnt too much of a surprise but a little later we heard the Saudi Embassy rolling back the rhetoric saying that actually the kingdom was grateful for countries like the United States for waiting to see what comes out of the investigation. There does seem to be, you know, an inconsistency coming out of riyadh at the moment as they try to figure out the next move forward. They are supported by the allies in the region, the king did call yesterday to president erdogan here in turkey. But the outcome of that phone call that we have been briefed on at least that they have agreed to form a working group doesnt change anything on the ground here at the moment. There was an agreement between the saudis and turkish officials last week to form a working group on how to get turkish investigators into the consulate. Days before that, the saudis had even said turkish investigators could go into the consulate. Theres a standoff on this issue right now and its not clear, you know, quite which direction the diplomacy going to go in coming from riyadh. But at the moment, with the strongest language we have from the turkish officials the foreign minister saying that the turkish investigators, the chief prosecutor and the team of experts must must get inside that consulate building and thats no indication were getting anywhere close to that at the moment. I mean, what can they do . We have heard theres this oped that appears to be sanctioned by the saudi leadership that said the kingdom affirms the total rejection of any threats and attempts to undermine it whether by threatening to impose economic sanctions using political pressures or repeating false accusations and it will respond with greater action. What can they do . Can they jack up oil prices . Sure they can. I mean, their response over the weekend was so defiant. Basically saying, you know, dare us that i think an oil response is not out of the question. Prices could go higher. This could be quite disruptive for western markets. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail and the saudis will realize whats at stake here. If they think it will be a weak and a passive response from washington, theyre not reading them correctly. Saudi arabia remains the largest exporter of oil. In a bigger picture, once you get beyond gas prices and sanctions, whats at stake here in terms of American Values and a way of life and freedom of the press around the world . Yeah, i think that when you look at the reaction, dave, from Business Leaders around the world, from other foreign governments you realize the u. S. Cant afford to be totally isolated on this. Were going to have to come up with some kind of response. And this very hardline prince probably will take it poorly. So this has all of the makings of a protracted crisis that the markets have to pay close attention to. You know something i noticed about the president s posturing over this, over the weekend, you know, he kept talking about jobs and this you know, these military contracts. Thats first time i have heard a president talk about the importance of doing business with a country as opposed to doing business with countries because we have influence on their domestic agendas. I think though you have to say hes been on a roll, with the great jobs market, with the economy that looks solid, with a lot of Key Senate Races starting to turn a little bit towards republicans. There are 300 people who rode out this storm or at least said theyre going to and the problem is accounting for the people in the aftermath with so much devastation. Communication has been a problem, although the cell service is back. Theres also been the problem they had the addresses of where people were. But when they went to find their homes after the storm in some cases those homes were completely gone. Now, a lot of those people have been accounted for in some way. They have selfreported or they have been seen by witnesses alive and well afterwards. But the problem is there is a number of people who havent been found. And the longer time goes on and theres no word from them, well, the greater the concern goes that they are still here somewhere. So search and recovery teams from across the state and beyond have been going through the buildings and now theyre left with the debris and theres so much of that to be sifted through. It can be several more days before they can make a full accounting and then until then, theyre encouraging residents to stay away. This community cannot support the people that used to live there. Theres no power, no sewer, no Running Water and communication is pretty spotty. Then thats the risk of fire. Theres so much timber on the ground here.
