For us. It has slowed, but it is not less dangerous. That means it is more dangerous. They think it is a category two. I can ride it out. A lot less of a concern. It is in motion for multiple days. All of that waeter that has bee pushed up ahead of the system, up to 83 feet, all of this is a concern. That translates closer to land and it will not be 83 feet. The storm surge is the biggest concern. The clouds from west to east is from San Francisco to colorado. That is one thing worth noting. When it comes to cyclones, 30 of deaths are storm surge and 8 related to the wind. The wind aspect does not take lives. It is the storm surge and rainfall. The storm surge has not changed one bit. As much as 13 plus feet. Rainfall up to 30 to 35 inches if possible. We think landfall is late Morning Hours and afternoon hours of friday. Outside of wilmington in the northern per representatiipher n wilmington. Working to the north, 2 to 4 feet in kill devil hills. All of this really specills disaster in coastal communities. We calm about normal sea level and we talk about normal sea level. That is not a big concern. You bring it up to 4 feet and you introduce water to the first level of the property. Take it up to 12 feet and you encompass the first level, but take water into the second level of the home. Not just on the coast, but several miles inland as you see with storm surge. This becomes a major story, considering it doesnt change the amount of water expected inland. You look at the storm system which is moving nicely along. 17 miles an hour. It will slow down to 5 to 6 miles an hour after landfall tomorrow morning. In fact, notice the icons almost directly on top of one another in a 12hour period. I calculated 12 miles of movement. That produces tremendous rainfall. When you look at 5 Miles Per Hour, storms drop 30 inches. We expect this to happen with this storm. 20 Miles Per Hour, 5 inches. Big player in the rainfall here. Notice the expansive area from wilmington to north of charleston. This region will be inundated with flash flooding into colombclo columbia and charlotte. The number one and number two threats remain the same regardless if it went to a category one. The energy has been in notion for days. Christine. This is still a dangerous storm. Quickly, when will they feel tropical stormforce winds . In the next 12 hours. They are extending 300 miles from the storm. The storm is about 300 miles away. You will feel this in the afternoon hours of today. Thank you, pedram. More than 1 Million People in the carolinas have been told to leave. One major power company, duke energy, expected for the worst. In Carolina Beach. The only bridge connecting the main lisland is closed. Many are planning to ride the storm out in town. We have meteorologist derek van dam in Carolina Beach. That is a real risk for storm surge where you are located. Reporter absolutely, christi christine. If the 13feet storm surge materializes, i would be under water tomorrow. The lowe elevation area. The population here as you mentioned. This island is connected by a bridge and susceptible to flooding. We know storm surge is not the only concern. The record setting rainfall across the area. There is a double whammy in terms of storm surge and heavy precipitation and wind threat. The winds are picking up in the area. We know people here are no stronger to hurricanes. They ridden out matthew and hugo. They know how to prepare. They know the threats involved with the storms. That doesnt mean everybody is heeding the warnings. I saw people here before sunset last night with final preparations for the impact from Hurricane Florence. Christine and alex. Five feet above sea level. That means the map will be redrawn in some of the places where you are located. You will see new inlets with the power of the storm. Thanks, derek. President trump tout incredible success after Hurricane Maria in puerto rico. The president says he is hearing good things of preparations for this storm. Tremendous people working on the hurricane. First responders, Law Enforcement and fema. They are all ready and we are getting tremendous accolades from politicians and the people. We are ready. This is going to be one of the biggest ones to ever hit our country. As part of the federal government response to florence, the centers for Disease Control and prevention opened its Emergency Operations center in atlanta overnight. Joining us is reid hawkins. He is with the National Weather service in wilmington, North Carolina. We heard from meteorologist derek van dam in Carolina Beach. There are 1,000 people who are thinking about staying. Many, of course, we heard saying they have ridden out hurricanes in the past. This is different. How dangerous is this . It is extremely dangerous. We have storm surge up to 13 feet potentially. It is a wide storm and with the length and duration, it will be battering for hours upon hours. We know strong winds are likely here. They are expecting tropical stor stormforce wind this afternoon. Talk to us about the risk of downed trees and power lines . That is a risk we had with the many hurricanes we had here. We will see it start to fail in pockets of the city go out and finally for the whole area. It is not uncommon. This is going to be such a long duration. It will be interesting to see. I know they are preparing for a couple of weeks without power in parts. Right. We know t real danger, reid, is not necessarily the winds we start seeing today and into tomorrow morning, but the water. The 13 plus feet of storm surge that will then rage and sit and really cause the real damage in the wake of the storm. Exactly. The storm surge is a concern, but the fleresh water flooding. We had a concern with floyd and matthew. The record rainfall rate for the area is like 25 or 26 inches. If we do get this 30 plus inches of rain, we surpass that easily. We will have impacts that this area has never seen before. I remember floyd where there was a problem with the confinement operations and the waste from the waste ponds. It sounds disgusting. If you have storm surge and rain and already saturated ground in North Carolina, theres an industrial risk here too. That is right. If yyou that is right. As you said, we have the agriculture waste as you talk about. Any pollution that gets into the water and it hurts the environment and the sea life for many months afterwards. Just a reminder. The wind and storm surge and immediate effects of the storm, but then so much happens after that as well. As people try to rebuild their lives. Reid, can you speak to the preparations that have been m e made . Has everything been made . I think the city has been prepared. I lived here for over 25 years. I have been through many storms. The first was bonney and fran in the mid 90s. We talk about the thousands in Carolina Beach that may have not left. Most people in New Hanover County where i live, they took the warning. Most people seemed to have left. Tell us about the array of bb buoys out there. We are expecting to see because the coastal shelf is shallow, we are expecting to see 25 to 30foot seas closer to the coast because of the shallow. Shallow doesnt get as high as 83 that you heard at the center. I guess that was reported yesterday. Reid hawkins from the National Weather service in wilmington, North Carolina. Stay safe. Keep us posted. Thank you. Hurricane florence as the potential to be the most expensive to hit the united states. Nearly 759,000 homes in the carolinas and virginia are in the dangerous path of the storm. That is early analysis from core logic. More than 170 billion to rebuild. That is 62 billion more than katrina. That storm cost 108 billion in property damage. These cost projections were made before the category two designati designation. It remains to be seen the impact here. Again, the storm surge and winds are a real, real concern here. Insurance companies are bracing for the hit if the majewsimagi happens. President trump claims his administrations response to the hurricane in puerto rico last year, Hurricane Maria, was what he called an unsung success. Nearly a year after the storm, it turns out this muchneeded help, as you see right there, is literally rotting on a runway. Millions of desperately needed bottles of water untouched. Cnns bill weir has more from san juan. Reporter imagine you spent months getting water from a pipe into a creek or collecting rain water to keep your family alive. How imagine there has been millions of bottles of bottled fresh water sitting on an airport runway unused that entire time. That story is outraging so Many Puerto Ricans after a local Law Enforcement official posted a picture of what looked like thousands of pallets parked on a runway in ceiba south of san juan here. You can see here and understand why. A runway full of bottled water. It is an exercise in blame. Fema says it is our job to get the resources to the island. This is not a supply issue. This is a distribution issue. Pushing responsibility off on the puerto rican government. The puerto rican government says fema delivered 20,000 pallets of water. That is 3 million bottles ever water they did not of water they did not need. Meaning it came too late. When they distributed the water, people complained of foul odor and taste and that setoff a series of tests. All the while, that resource is sitting in the puerto rican sun. Im bill weir in san juan. You hope there is a connection with the research with the officials to make sure it doesnt happen again instead of blaming. Hurricane florence is bearing down on the carolinas. The powerful moving storm is so slow that you could walk faster. Were live in the impact zone next. Disaster at the door step and its coming in. Hurricane florence on its final approach to the carolinas. The storm moving at a very slow pace. Once the storm arrives, some areas will see hurricane conditions for a full 24 hours. They will see tropical stormforce winds this afternoon. Im christine romans. Im alex marquardt. Great to be with you on this busy morning. Lets stay with the storm. Florence closing in on carolinas. Storm has weakened to a dangerous category two. Doesnt change the effects. Rainfall measured in feet and not inches. It is forecast to create lifethreatening conditions. The warning officials are giving is leave immediately. More than 2 Million People live in areas under warnings. States of emergency have been declared in five states. Carolinas, georgia, virginia and maryland. Airlines have canceled 800 flights along the east coast in anticipation of the storm. The National Hurricane center says waves out at sea and the strongest part of the storm are as high as 83 feet. Seven Nuclear Power plants as you see on the map are in the path of the storm. We have meteorologist Pedram Javaheri in the Weather Center for us. What can you tell us . The last couple hours, the storm is going through a restructuring process. The eyewall reprocessing. It may change up to a category three. One mile per hour stronger is changing the category. Look at the northern fringe. More convecconvection. More shear here. Unfortunately, the energy is in motion and this becomes a slow motion disaster once it approaches land. The steering environment slows down. 17 Miles Per Hour right now is the progress. We think it will drop 3 to 4 miles friday morning. We will see the tropical stormforce winds. They extend from the center. You see those in the outer banks shortly after sunrise. Tropical gusts. You work into the evening hours and tonight, you will see hurricane forcewinds in morehead and wilmington. All of this pushes inland as we go into the overnight hours of tonight and tomorrow morning. The number one weather killer is storm surge as it fails to move along and sits on the coast and continues to batter the region as it pumps water in the bays and inlets from the cape to hatteras region. 9 to 13 feet is what you are expecting. And nags head up to 2 to 4 feet in spots and working to charleston. Few years around myrtle beach which is 4 to 6 feet. That gets water up to the first story of your home. 12 feet gets it to the second story of your home. Some beaches will be washed away. Some communities near myrtle beach will take on water and destruction in the wilmington region. The 12foot storm surge is in the forecast. The other part is the very little progression after landfall tomorrow morning. We think the storm may for a 12hour period may travel for miles. That is more than 4 Miles Per Hour or essentially what an advantage walking speed of a person. It is battering the coastal communities with the 12foot storm surge and drawing moisture from the warm area off the coast and bringing in rainfall up to 20 to 25 inches. Some areas getting 30 inches of rainfall. You can look closely at data that exists for hundreds of tropical systems that made landfall. When they go 5 miles an hour, they produce 30 inches of rainfall. 20 miles an hour, it drops to 5 inches of rainfall. We will set records in the Rainfall Department across the region and storm surge is a number one weather killer with tropical systems and rainfall is the number two aspect of the flash flooding. You notice this whole area on the coast is off the top of the charts when it comes to the Rainfall Department. That has not changed one bit. Regardless, if this storm were to be category one during landfall, this would not change because energy has been moving along with it for a come days. Very important point. We talk about the wind, but it is the water that does the most damage. Pedram javaheri, thank you. We will check in with you a lot today. More than 1 Million People in the carolinas have been told to leave. One region power company, duke energy, is planning for the worst. The Company Expects as many as 3 million homes to lose power during the storm. That is 75 of the customers. Carolina beach, the only bridge connecting the island to the mainland is closed. Officials fear as many as 1,000 of the 6,300 residents are planning to ride out the storm in the town which is less than five feet above sea level. Our meteorologist derek van dam is live in Carolina Beach. Derek, storm surge could reach 13 plus feet. Reporter and that means where im standing right now, storm surge this time tomorrow, i will be under water completely. With the town at five feet above sea level and the 13feet storm surge forecast, that means trouble. You dont need to be a mathmajor to figure that out. This is the Coastal Region of North Carolina and south carolina. Im on Carolina Beach. A narrow and thin island separated from the main part of land by the bridge that is closed off and authorities here have warned the residents that decided to stay here and ride out the storm that they need to be prepared to not have electricity and have no services for five to seven days after Hurricane Florence finally leaves. That really puts it in perspective of what authorities are expecting. They have been going doortodoor for residents who left their lights on to see if anyone is home. They have the opportunity to leave over the bridge, but cannot return back to the island. That is the only stipulation. We know the area is prone to flooding and they are no strangers to hurricanes. They know the threats. Christine and alex. Back to you. They have a hell of a storm heading their way. Our authorities are with them. Those who our thoughts are with them. Those who decide to stay behind. Der derek, stay safe. South carolina Governor Henry Mcmaster lifted evacuation orders this week. The storm track shifted south. We get more from drew griffin in myrtle beach. Reporter christine and alex. This is ocean boulevard, myrtle beach. Usually crowded right now. Myrtle beach right now under manned store curfew that started at 10 00 last night and goes into tonight, of course. This area really caught somewhat off guard by the change if direction. They thought they would have a glancing blow. Wednesday morning the forecast changed and now they could be a direct hit of florence. Businesses were ordered shut at 5 00 last night. They boarded up and sand bagged as best they could. You see that up and down the street here. They are concerned not just about the surge that could come in and the wind that could come in from the ocean which i can see in the dark. You cant see it here. Also the sheer amount of rain that will fall because of the slowmoving nature of this storm. I want to show you something else. This big ferris wheel. Iconic spot here in downtown myrtle beach. There are no cars on it. They took all the cars off of that ferris wheel during the Daylight Hours and shipped them away so they could hopefully put them back on the fully intact ferris wheel when this is over. Right now, hundreds of people in shelters. 1,300 across the state. Probably more by now. As south carolina, myrtle beach, waits for florence to come from and move out. Alex and christine.
